Fuji Excursion: New direct train from Shinjuku to Mount Fuji

November 22, 2022

Fuji excursion train

Mount Fuji is a breathtaking destination which is right at the top of many visitors’ bucket lists. It offers sensational views which have inspired Japanese art for centuries but, at over 3,500 meters above sea level , it has not been the easiest place to get to!

The great news is that the launch of the new Fuji Excursion train has made it much easier. It connects Shinjuku Station (Tokyo) directly to Mount Fuji which saves travelers a great deal of time as well as the hassle of making multiple changes.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the new limited express Fuji Excursion train including the route, timetable, prices, making seat reservations, and whether you can use your JR Pass on the service.

Fuji Excursion service

The service is operated by E353 series trains which start the journey with 3 cars (numbered 1 to 3). However, between Otsuki and Shinjuku , the train couples with another 8 more cars (numbered 4 to 12).

The full journey from Shinjuku Station will only take an hour and 50 minutes marking a huge timesaving for visitors. At the moment , 3 trains run daily on both weekdays and Saturdays and holidays.

The Fuji Excursion makes several stops at convenient stops for tourists including Otsuki (where you can see the world’s fastest train at the Yamanashi Prefectural Maglev Exhibition Center), Fujikyu Highland (Japan’s largest amusement park) and Kawaguchiko (next to Lake Kawaguchi).

Route and stops

The Fuji Excursion is a regular limited express service which runs between Shinjuku on the Chuo Line and Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi) on the Fujikyuko Line. There are two round trips a day which stop at the following stations:

  • Tsuru-bunkadaigaku-mae
  • Fujikyu Highland
  • Kawaguchiko

The last three stations (Mount Fuji, Fujikyu-Highland and Kawaguchiko) serve as gateway stations for Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes.

Fuji excursion route

Tickets and fares

Passengers can buy tickets for the Fuji Excursion from the JR ticket counter, a JR ticket machine or online. Here is a list of the prices (for one-way trips):

If you have a Japan Rail Pass you can ride a part of the Fuji Excursion (Shinjuku – Otsuki) without needing an additional ticket . This means that JR Pass holders need to buy a ticket for the ‘ Otsuki – Mount Fuji / Fujikyu Highland / Kawaguchiko ’ section of the journey:

  • Otsuki – Kawaguchiko: 1140 yen
  • Express fare: 600 yen for adults; 400 yen for children
  • Total: 1740 yen

Fuji Excursion timetable

Here is the current timetable for the Fuji Excursion trains .

For further information, please check http://www.fujikyu-railway.jp/fujikaiyuu/ .

Seat reservation

Passengers need to buy a supplementary ticket , as well as the basic ticket, to board the train. There are two types of these supplementary tickets: the reserved seat ticket and the unreserved seat ticket .

The reserved ticket allows a specific seat to be reserved . There is a lamp above each seat which indicates whether a seat is reserved or not. A green light means a seat has been reserved, a red light signifies a seat in unreserved, and a yellow light  shows that a seat has been reserved for a later part of the journey (passengers can sit in these seats but will have to give the seat up when the reserving passenger boards).

The unreserved seat ticket allows passengers to sit on any of the unreserved seats. If there are no unreserved seats available passengers with unreserved seats need to stand up for the journey .

Top Mt. Fuji Tours from Shinjuku

If your Japan travel bucket list has Mt. Fuji day trip from Tokyo listed in it, look no further. This list will point you to the best Mt. Fuji tours out there, all departing from the very convenient location of Shinjuku.

How to Pick the Best Mt. Fuji Tour for You

As a travel marketer, one of my missions is pairing up travelers with the tour that suits their needs. I consider it my role to equip you with relevant information so that you can make the right choice.

So let me start by breaking down the two major routes for you: a trip to Mt. Fuji is often paired with either Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi. Both locations have major sightseeing spots which make up the variations of Mt. Fuji tours.

View of Hakone Shrine Gates from Lake Ashi pirate cruise

Hakone is a popular weekend getaway from Tokyo and boasts a variety of spectacular natural landscapes. Hakone is where you can find the Hakone Shrine, one of the most Instagrammed spots in Japan. Truthfully though, most tour operators have missed this point as a coveted spot and don’t take travelers to the area but allow enough time for them to go there on their own.

Hakone is also where you can find Owakudani, an active volcano crater sprouting sulfuric gases. Going to Owakudani requires riding the Hakone Ropeway, which affords guests an aerial view. Even among natural landscapes, Owakudani is strikingly peculiar. It’s out-of-this-world atmosphere is one of the reasons why it’s a popular attraction.

Locally, Hakone is also loved as a hot spring town. Some ryokan inns have a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji which you can enjoy while taking a dip in a private tub. Hot spring experiences are usually not included in day tours, however.

  • Lake Kawaguchi

View of Mt. Fuji with fall foliage from Lake Kawaguchi

While Mt. Fuji is visible from Hakone, I personally find the view from Lake Kawaguchi to be better. The mountain’s presence is imposing, to the point that it feels like you can’t escape it wherever you go. In particular, I found the view near the maple corridor awe-inspiring. In fact, of the many times I’ve been to see Fuji, this was by far my favorite.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kyoko Ueda / トラベルインスタグラマー / Japan Travel (@kyoko1903)

Speaking of the maple corridor, the area surrounding Lake Kawaguchi is ideal for seasonal photos. Aside from momiji in autumn, you can also capture kochia when you go to Oishi Park around October. Oishi Park also has pampas grass in the winter and lavender in July, making it one of the best places to capture the beauty of Mt. Fuji through the seasons.

Should You Go to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station?

So far, I’ve talked about seeing great views of Mt. Fuji but what about actually going to the mountain? Many of the Mt. Fuji tours that you can book online go as far up as the 5th station—that’s halfway up and also the highest point you can reach by either private or public transportation. It’s also the entry point to climbing Mt. Fuji

Now, here’s the thing. Not all Mt. Fuji tours go to the 5th Station. In a sense, they’re misnomers because they don’t really take you to Mt. Fuji, but only to see it. Going to the 5th Station limits the contents of an itinersry, which is why some tours do away with it.

Now back to the question: should you book a tour with the 5th station in it? My two cents is that if heights are your thing and you want to take a photo with a sign that says how high up you are, then you’d probably get a kick out of it. Otherwise, I personally think it’s skippable. There’s a shrine and a bunch of shops with souvenirs, but other than that, it’s not that exciting. You can see the peak of Mt. Fuji on a fine day, but because you’re already halfway there, the mountain doesn’t look as grand as when you view it from ground level.

Now that we’ve covered the bases, let’s go to the tours themselves. Here are the top 10 Mt. Fuji tours from Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Mt. Fuji & Hakone Tour

Lake Ashi cruise on a pirate ship

  • Mt. Fuji 5th Station
  • Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani
  • Lake Ashi Cruise

The golden route for Fuji Hakone tours. This tour takes you to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station first, then proceeds the Hakone Ropeway for an aerial view of Owakudani. You will stop at Owakudani to try the famous black eggs, which are said to extend your lifespan for up to 7 years. The tour finishes with the highly popular Lake Ashi cruise, from which you can see Mt. Fuji as well as the Hakone Shrine gates. An optional bullet train return is available for guests at a slightly higher fee. The route back to Tokyo tends to be congested, so I recommend booking the Shinkansen plan for people who want to get back faster.

Tours Pros:

Covers all the Fuji-Hakone basics. The tour goes to Subashiri side of the 5th Station, which tends to be less crowded. The cruise is also in the afternoon, which means that sunlight will be gentle enough for lovely cruise photos.

As the sightseeing spots are highly popular, the tour tends to be crowded. Lake Ashi on weekends is pretty popular among foreign tourists, while Japanese tourists tend to flock in Owakudani.

Tour Price : Starts at JPY 14,000 per adult Lunch: Hoto Noodles + Buffet, Optional Length: 9-12 hours, includes bullet train return options

  • For a variation of this tour with shopping at Gotemba Premium Outlets, see this .
  • For a variation of this tour without the 5th station, but with Gotemba and a morning Lake Ashi cruise, see this .

Mt. Fuji & Lake Kawaguchi Tours

Mt. fuji tour with lake kawaguchi cruise.

View of Mt. Fuji from Tenjoyama peak

  • 5th Station
  • Lake Kawaguchi Cruise
  • Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (Kachi Kachi Ropeway)

If you ask me, this tour is the Kawaguchiko version of the Fuji Hakone golden route, the difference being that you cruise Lake Kawaguchi and that the ropeway ride is fairly short. As I have mentioned earlier, I prefer Lake Kawaguchi to Lake Ashi when it comes to views of Mt. Fuji, so in no way does this tour fall short.

As for the ropeway, the ride takes travelers to the peak of Mt. Tenjo, which has an observation deck for Mt. Fuji. There’s a rabbit shrine at the peak, and there’s a teahouse that sells tanuki dango .

Tour Price: Starts at JPY 6,000 per adult Lunch : Optional, western cuisine or buffet Length: 10-11.5 hours

This one’s for the whole family. Kids will love Oshino Ninja Village with their ninja shows and attractions. You will also get to see a historical village at Oshino Hakkai, made even lovelier with Mt. Fuji in the backdrop. Oshino Hakkai also has lush cherry blossom trees and is a must-see during sakura season.

The 5th station comprises the latter half of the tour, which may mean less congestion. This tour is also the only one with a 4D ride, where you get to see Mt. Fuji chan

Tour Price: Starts at JPY 14,000 per adult Lunch: Optional. Japanese cuisine with mini buffet, vegetarian options available Length: 10-11 hours

  • Lake Kawaguchi Oishi Park
  • Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine
  • Gotemba Premium Outlets

Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine’s pagoda with Mt. Fuji in the background is one of the most photographed scenes in Japan. This coupled with Instagram-perfect spots like Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai make this tour one to recommend. There’s the added bonus of getting to shop at Gotemba Premium Outlets too.

Tour Price: Starts at JPY 6,600 per adult Lunch: Not included Length: 10.5 hours

Mt. Fuji Tours from Shinjuku with Forest & Cave Adventures

For the more adventurous traveler, there’s a lot to explore on the Yamanashi side of Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji Tour with Aokigahara & Narusawa Ice Cave

View this post on Instagram A post shared by JAPAN PRIVATE TOUR (JPT) (@japanprivatetour)
  • Narusawa Ice Cave

Yes, it’s the infamous Aokigahara Forest, where people reportedly go to end their life on their own terms. The rumors are true, and the forest has been the subject of documentaries long before an attention-seeking YouTuber made a disrespectful video. While Aokigahara has been portrayed as dark and sinister by some, at the end of the day, it is simply what it is—a forest, and a lovely one at that. It is also home to beautiful lava caves, which make a thrilling trip for nature explorers. If you’re into spelunking, this tour is definitely for you.

A word of caution: this tour requires a moderate degree of physical fitness and spelunking skills. For casual cave exploration, see the next tour.

Tour Price: JPY 19,000 per adult Lunch: Not included Length: 11.5-13 hours

Mt. Fuji Tour with Aokigahara Caves & Sake Tasting

  • Fugaku Wind Cave
  • Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
  • Sake Brewery

This tour caters to nature lovers and is a little more rounded than the one mentioned above. You start with two of Aokigahara’s most popular caves, each with its own charm. Lunch is a steaming hot pot of hoto noodles, Yamanashi’s specialty. This is followed by a ropeway ride to the summit of Mt. Tenjo, where you can take in a lovely view of Mt. Fuji as well as enjoy small attractions like a love bell and a rabbit shrine. You can pick up sweet mochi on sticks ( tanuki dango ) at a teahouse too. The last stop is a sake brewery where you can taste test different types of sake. If you prefer non-alcoholic beverages, you can try grape juice and other fruit juices, too.

Tour Price: Starts at JPY 11,000 per adult Lunch: Hoto noodles Length: 10.5 Hours

Best Mt. Fuji Tours from Shinjuku with Seasonal Views

Mt. Fuji becomes even lovelier with seasonal blooms. Here’s a guide on what to book.

The earliest cherry blossoms can be seen in February, which means you can enjoy it with some fun in the snow, too. This tour takes you to do just that.

During the peak of cherry blossom season in March and/or April, the best places to see Mt. Fuji framed by cherry blossoms are Arakura Sengen Shrine and Oshino Hakkai.

Shibazakura

The Shibazakura Festival is held around mid-April to mid-May, during which you can enjoy the sight pink and purple moss phlox carpeting the fields. There’s a mini Mt. Fuji on site and there’s a lot of Mt. Fuji-inspired food. You will also find the raindrop cake sold here, which originated in Yamanashi.

Going independent

Were you unable to find a tour and would you like to visit the region independently?

To help you plan your trip we created the following guides with more information on the Lake Kawaguchiko and Hakone region:

The Tokyo to Mt Fuji Day Trip article contains more information on Lake Kawaguchiko.

In the Hakone day trip guide we describe the famous Hakone loop and more sights in the Hakone region.

Points of interest around the Mt. Fuji area

To help you make your choice, we have a little more information about the different points of interest that are included in these tours.

Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station Japan

Mt. Fuji 5th station

A Mt. Fuji 5th station is as close to Mt. Fuji as you can get without climbing the mountain.  There are four different so-called 5th stations.  These stations contain shops where those who will climb to the top can buy their supplies.

The stations are excellent places for beautiful views of Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps, and the greater Fifth Lake area.

The Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station is the most accessible of the 4 stations and therefore most tours will make a stop here.

Keep in mind that visiting a Mount Fuji 5th station is not always possible. The roads are closed in winter and outside that period the road may also be closed at short notice because of heavy snowfall or rain. In those cases, the itineraries of these tours will be changed.

Kawaguchiko Lake

Lake Kawaguchiko is the largest of the 5 Mt. Fuji lakes.

Weather permitting, it’s a great place to catch amazing views of Mt. Fuji.

Besides splendid views of Mount Fuji, it offers plenty of other great activities such as onsen, museums, cable cars, hiking trails, an amusement park, and much more.

Below we share the places that are most often visited with a tour.

Arakura Sengen Shrine and Chureito Pagoda

The Chureito Pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine.

This is an iconic Mount Fuji viewing spot. We took this picture in February, if you visit the shrine a few weeks later, during the Sakura season, the view is even more beautiful.

A stop at this famous shrine is included in tour 3 and tour 8 .

Oshino Hakkai Village

Oshino Hakkai is recognized as a world cultural heritage site since 2013.

It is famous for its eight sacred ponds with crystal water.

Here you can also find Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, an open-air museum  that showcases old traditional farmhouses along with traditional farming tools, samurai armors, and various weapons from that time.

The traditional houses, with the perfectly shaped volcano in the background, make for a perfect picture that could have been made in the old days of Japan.

It is visited with tour 3 , tour 4 , and tour 5 .

Oshino Shinobi no Sato

Oshino Shinobi no Sato also called the Ninja Village, is a place where you can rent Ninja costumes, watch a Ninja show and solve the mystery of the Karakuri house which is full of traps and secret doors.

From the garden, you can enjoy great views of Mt. Fuji.

It’s a great place to visit if you are traveling with children.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba

This is an open-air museum on the Western shores of Lake Saiko.

Take a stroll through the village and marvel at the houses with thatched roofs which will give you a glimpse into life in Japan in the olden days.

Here you can also participate in craft workshops and rent Japanese costumes to take a picture.

It is visited with tour 8 .

A Pirate Ship Cruise on Lake Ashi

Hakone is a lush green and picturesque region not too far from Mt. Fuji. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and hot springs, and even more so for the views of iconic Mount Fuji.

Below are the activities that these tours do in the Hakone region.

Lake Ashi is a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains. It’s a busy destination in Hakone as it is part of the Hakone Loop , a popular loop that takes you past many of Hakone’s highlights.

Lake Ashi is a great place for hiking. Trails follow the shoreline or lead to viewpoints up into the mountains.

Another popular activity is a cruise. If weather permits the cruise will offer good views of Mt. Fuji.

The following tours include a cruise on the lake: tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

The Hakone ropeway crossed the Owakudani Valley

Hakone ropeway

On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot a scenic view of Mount Fuji as you ride the ropeway. In addition, the cable car also offers a beautiful view of the volcanic Owakudani valley.

This ropeway is included in tour 1 , tour 2 , tour 6 , and tour 7 .

Owakudani Valley, also known as “Hell Valley”, is an amazing place. It is one of the few places in the region where you can see the volcanic activity so clearly.

You smell the sulfur smell and see the boiling mud pools.

You can also eat black eggs here, eggs that were boiled in the mud puddles. Eating 1 egg would give you 7 extra years of life. At least that’s how the myth goes…

A visit to the valley is included in tour 1 , tour 2, tour 6 and tour 7 .

Gotemba Premium Outlets

Gotemba Premium Outlets

The Gotemba Premium Outlets is one of the largest outlets in Japan where you can find most of the US and European premium brands such as Hugo Boss, Gap, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Godiva chocolates, etc.

Most of the stores are tax-free for tourists. So don’t forget to take your passport and show it to the cashier when you pay.

It’s a great place to combine bargain hunting with taking pictures of Mount Fuji.

Shopping time at the Gotemba Premium Outlets is included in   tour 4,   tour 5, and tour 7

Komagatake Ropeway

The Komagatake Ropeway starts at the shore of Lake Ashi and leads to the peak of Mt. Komagatake, at 1.356 meters one of the tallest peaks in the area.

On a clear day, you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji from the observation platform at the top station.

You can also visit the Mototsumiya Shrine. The “shrine in the sky” is at the very top of the mountain, only a short walk from the top station of the gondola.

The Komagatake ropeway is included in  tour 6 .

Mishima Skywalk

The Mishima Skywalk is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. It is 400 meters long and thanks to its spectacular location it offers breathtaking views on both Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

Next to the suspension bridge there is also an adventure park with a zip line and a treetop parcours.

Odawara Castle Hakone Japan

2. Avoid peak times

On a similar note, try to avoid booking a tour on weekends or during holiday periods . Not only will prices likely be higher, but it will also be more crowded. Traffic jams often happen, and if you’re on a bus tour this can add several hours to your journey time, both ways.

3. Decide whether you want a view OF or a view FROM Mt. Fuji

Finally, decide whether you want to go up Mt. Fuji or just look at it. Tours that go up Mt. Fuji usually stop at the 5th Station (about halfway up), unless they’re specifically a climbing Fuji tour. And while you get to say that you stood on Mt. Fuji, the view isn’t actually that impressive. If you want to get the best views, then there are plenty of other iconic photo spots and viewing areas you can visit instead.

The best Mt. Fuji tours, compared

Here’s a quick comparison of some of the most popular Mt. Fuji day-trip tours from Tokyo, so you can see how much they cost and what they include. Note that some charge per person, while others charge per group.

mt fuji tours from shinjuku

1. Most scenic: Lake Kawaguchi & views of Mt. Fuji tour

¥ 12,300 to ¥ 15,800 per person Book here Lunch upgrades available

This one-day bus tour takes the top spot for the most scenic tour of the Mt. Fuji area. You’ll visit the iconic Chūreitō Pagoda and (weather permitting) snap your own version of the above photo.

Next, you’ll have a lunch break near Lake Kawaguchi , before heading to Oishi Park . The park is known for its seasonal flowers, and the fantastic view of Mt. Fuji across the lake.

The final stop is Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba (also known as Healing Village). This open-air museum is on the site of an old farming village that was destroyed by a landslide in 1966. It was reconstructed, and the old thatched-roof houses were converted into museums, galleries, and shops. It’s a great spot to pick up handcrafted souvenirs, and of course there’s another chance to take a good photo of Mt. Fuji.

mt fuji tours from shinjuku

The tour includes round-trip bus transport from Tokyo. There are two pick-up locations: one in Shinagawa and one in Shinjuku. However, at the end of tour there is only one drop-off point, which is in Shinjuku.

The tour bus is large and comfortable, and along the way the guide will share information about the history of the sites in English. We recommend upgrading to include lunch, because there aren’t many other cafés or restaurants near the lunch stop. Otherwise, you can pack your own lunch and picnic by the lake to save a bit of money.

2. Best of both worlds: Hakone & Mt. Fuji 5th Station tour

¥ 19,488 to ¥ 21,539 per person Book here Lunch upgrades available (vegetarian and halal meals on request)

This tour gives you the best of both worlds — you’ll get stunning views and also get to step foot on Mt. Fuji itself. Your first stop is Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station, about halfway up the mountain. From here you can look out over the Fuji Five Lakes, but it’s not the best place to view the mountain itself.

Next, you’ll head to Shinobi No Sato Ninja Village, a ninja theme park. You’ll have lunch there, and then finish off the day with a visit to the Hakone area . Hakone is known for its natural beauty and — if the weather is good — a great view of Mt. Fuji.

Mt. Fuji, Heiwa no torii and the pirate ship from Lake Ashi, Hakone

On this tour, you depart Tokyo by bus from pick-up locations in either Shinjuku or Ginza. Included in the price is a return Shinkansen ticket to get you back at the end of the day.

There is WiFi on the bus, and there are multilingual audioguides available. If you upgrade to include lunch, it’s a buffet style all-you-can-eat affair. Vegetarian and halal options are available, but make sure to request them when booking.

3. Hot spring visit and Mt. Fuji tour

¥ 7,800 per person Book here

If a day of relaxation is more up your alley, then you’ll like this one. Your guide will take you to an onsen (hot spring) spa near Lake Yamanaka, where you can soak away your troubles.

First, though, you’ll check out Lake Kawaguchi for postcard-perfect views of Mt. Fuji. You’ll also visit the legendary Chūreitō Pagoda, or — depending on the time of year and weather — the 5th Station of Fuji itself.

This tour includes round-trip travel from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station. However, lunch isn’t included, and you’ll also need to pay a bit extra for the hot spring entry ticket.

4. Shop till you drop: Gotemba Premium Outlets & views of Mt. Fuji tour

¥ 6,599 per person Book here

If a shopping trip with views of Mt. Fuji sounds like your kind of thing, then this one-day tour is perfect. First, you’ll head to Gotemba Premium Outlets , where you’ll have two hours of free time to shop your heart out, and grab some lunch too. Gotemba Premium Outlets is an open-air mall with over 200 shops selling luxury and brand-name goods at bargain prices. You can also relax in a hot spring there.

In the afternoon, you’ll stop by Oshino Hakkai (the famous Fuji ponds) and Lake Kawaguchi to take in some lovely views of Mt. Fuji.

The tour includes round-trip bus transport from Ginza.

5. Best for families: Private & customizable Fuji tour

¥ 65,835 per group (up to five people) Book here

For families, you can’t beat the convenience of a private Mt. Fuji day-trip tour from Tokyo. This particular one is great because it’s also fully customizable. An English-speaking driver will take you to some of the most famous sites around Mt. Fuji and even up to the 5th Station, if you like.

You’ll be picked up from your Tokyo hotel in an airconditioned vehicle, and dropped back off at the end of the day. The vehicle has free WiFi, and you can also request a child seat. We like that this particular tour is also stroller, wheelchair, and service-animal friendly.

6. Canoeing tour with Mt. Fuji views

¥ 5,500 per person Book here

This small group canoe tour is perfect for all the sporty types out there. Rise bright and early for a 7 a.m. paddle around Lake Kawaguchiko with a professional guide, and drink in the spectacular views of Mt. Fuji while you’re at it.

The experience lasts for 90 minutes, and because of the early start it’s best suited for people who are already staying near Kawaguchiko . Also keep in mind, that the tour needs a minimum of two participants to go ahead.

7. Great in all seasons: Mt Fuji 5th Station & fruit-picking tour

¥ 10,898 per person Book here Lunch included (vegetarian on request)

This tour has a great range of activities that are perfect for a wonderful experience year-round. First, you’ll visit a farm in Yamanashi Prefecture to pick seasonal fruit — for example, grapes in fall or peaches in summer. Then it’s on to Oishi Park, known for its view of Mt. Fuji and beautiful flowers. In spring and fall, you might visit different locations that are known for their cherry blossoms or autumn leaves instead.

For lunch, you’ll have hōtō , a popular noodle dish from the Mt. Fuji area. Finally, in the afternoon you’ll take a ride on th Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway and visit Mt. Fuji 5th Station.

Bus pick-up and drop-off from Shinjuku is included in the tour. WiFi is available onboard. Lunch is also included, and there are vegetarian options available on request.

8. Once in a lifetime: Helicopter tours to Mt. Fuji

¥ 320,000 per group (up to three people) Book here

For that once-in-a-lifetime, burn-through-money, not-at-all-sustainable experience, you can’t top a helicopter tour to Mt. Fuji. This one is a 70-minute round-trip from Tokyo, with the route changing depending on the weather — so you know you’ll get a good view, regardless. You’ll also get an aerial look at Tokyo, so keep your eye out for iconic sights like Tokyo Tower .

9. Best Mt. Fuji trekking tour (summer only)

¥ 175,000 per group (up to nine people) Book here

Want to climb Mt. Fuji but not sure where to start? Then this is the tour for you. You’ll hike from the 5th Station to the 7th Station under the watchful eye of an experienced, English-speaking guide. There is also the option to continue to the summit, if you’re so inclined.

The tour includes pick-up and drop-off from your Tokyo hotel in a private, airconditioned vehicle. Snacks and drinks are also included. This tour is charged at a flat rate of ¥ 175,000 per group of up to nine people — so get some friends together to make the most of it.

10. Ski & snowboard tour to Mt. Fuji (winter only)

From ¥ 12,940 per person Book here

Not into climbing Mt. Fuji? What about skiing or snowboarding on it instead? With this tour, you can do just that. We highly recommend it for beginners because it takes the hassle out of planning a ski trip. Plus, you get to boast that you learnt to ski on Mt. Fuji. Just be sure to get in quickly — this package has limited availability .

The basic package includes a round-trip bus ride from Tokyo to Fujiyama Snow Resort Yeti , and you can upgrade to include equipment and clothing rental, lessons, and lift passes. Prices start at ¥ 12,940 per person for the basic package, and go up to ¥ 25,060 per person for the full package.

Mt. Fuji tours: Frequently asked questions

Is a mt. fuji tour worth it.

For most travelers, yes. A Mt. Fuji tour from Tokyo is an easy, convenient and cost-effective way to see the mountain and surrounding areas in one day. Everything is arranged for you, so all you have to do is hop on the bus or into the car, and enjoy the sightseeing.

Should I upgrade my tour to include lunch?

Yes, we definitely recommend upgrading to include lunch in your tour. Attractions in the Mt. Fuji area are quite spread out, so there’s no guarantee there’ll be other dining options nearby — it’s much easier to go along with your group to a pre-booked restaurant. However, if you have special dietary requirements or preferences, confirm with your tour provider beforehand, because they might not be able to cater to your needs. If this is the case, or you just want to save some money, packing your lunch is always a good option.

When is the best season to see Mt. Fuji?

Winter is the best time to visit if you want to see the iconic mountain. If you’d like to climb Mt. Fuji , you have to wait for the official climbing season (usually July to September). If you visit during fall or spring you’ll be treated to some lovely seasonal scenery, but you might not be able to see Mt. Fuji clearly.

Mount Fuji framed by autumn leaves

Can you take a bus up Mt. Fuji?

You can get a bus as far up Mt. Fuji as the 5th Station. During the climbing season there are frequent buses from Kawaguchiko Station , and there is also a direct bus from Shinjuku. The buses are less frequent during other parts of the year.

To find out more, check out our full guide on how to get from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji .

Is Mt. Fuji a good day trip from Tokyo?

Mt. Fuji is a good — and very popular — day trip from Tokyo. But we’ll be real with you: it’s a long day, with most tours lasting 10 or more hours, including the round-trip transport from Tokyo. If you’ve got the time, we recommend spending a night or two in the Mt. Fuji area . It’s more relaxing, and there’ll be more chances for Mt. Fuji spotting.

mt fuji tours from shinjuku

When is the best time to book a Mt. Fuji tour?

If you’re planning to book a Mt. Fuji day-trip tour, we recommend booking about a week in advance. This is because if the weather is bad, your chances of seeing Mt. Fuji are next to nothing — and weather forecasts just aren’t accurate enough much further in advance.

Check the weather a week ahead and book accordingly. Don’t worry too much about tours selling out; there are lots to choose from, so even if our top picks are sold out there’ll probably be something else just as good available.

While we do our best to ensure it’s correct, information is subject to change.

  • AnnieS993 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disinterested driver who spoke barely any English. Mount Fuji was amazing! This is the tour to do to ensure you hit the best viewing locations for Mount Fuji in comfort. Good shoes are needed and don't forget a sunhat! We also saw lots of birds of prey. Clearly some people are blessed with a fabulous driver, we were not. Having had some very terse WhatsApps about ensuring we're ready on time the evening before, the driver was late due to an accident. Fair enough, he also went to the wrong hotel... So he was an hour late picking us up. At each site the driver walked ahead, no chatting and no information, thank goodness for Google! Then at one location we got a WhatsApp asking why we were not down from the viewing platform! The driver was very tight about our return time, despite his lateness... And on the way back was watching videos on his phone while driving. To cap it off he then tried to return us to the wrong hotel, blaming me for booking a hotel in the same chain. So be warned, comfort and views great. Drivers not always what is promised. Read more Written April 17, 2024

We highly recommend them for people who wants to visit Tokyo, but has limited time, mobility, and just want to have an easy and enjoyable time in Tokyo. It's quite difficult to navigate trains/buses in Japan if you are a group with older adults/seniors Advantages: 1. Easy to contact thru Whatsapp and Email - All of our questions/requests were answered promptly. 2. Competitive Pricing - Price is competitive with other providers. It is expensive, but it is expected because Japan is expensive 3. Flexible Tours - The team made sure that we were pick up from our hotel at convenient times. Our daily tours/activities were properly timed and they were flexible enough that we can skip or add activities 4. Complimentary Water is provided 5. They made reservations for us as well as gave recommendations Shorux was our driver and he made us feel welcomed during our trip. Disadvantages - None. Honestly, we wish we could have stayed longer! We will definitely contact them again for our future trips in Japan. Thank you Sluzeb! Read more Written April 16, 2024

He really put himself out for us and also made a great restaurant recommendation for lunch. Top man. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • Scott D 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Read the fine print!! The driver showed up on time. About 30 minutes later, the car had a flat tire. The “private chauffeur” did not know where the spare tire was located. Japan roadside service showed up and helped changed the tire. Unfortunately, the spare was flat and unusable.. so we traveled on the highway at 10 kmh basically on the rim itself.. waited an hour-ish for another car to continue our tour.. We lost ~ 3 hours of the “tour time”. We paid 100,000 yen for the day.. and were offered 14,000 yen as compensation for lost time.. I asked for 30,000 yen since the tour was supposed to be for 10 hours. Seemed like a fair ask. Was told that this was the best offer and to contact TripAdvisor for a partial refund. Took the 14,000 yen and emailed TripAdvisor for the rest.. Viator denied the request.. Why can’t people do what is fair?? And btw.. the “tour” is a non-native driver for the day.. no real knowledge of the site you are going to.. just a driver. Read more Written April 7, 2024

Best time to go to Mt. Fuji

Before visiting Japan , you need to research ahead if you’d like to see or climb Mt. Fuji– because these two different activities require a specific season to travel.

Summer (July to mid-September)

mt fuji hike

If you want to see Mt. Fuji from Tokyo, the summer months from July to September give you the lowest chance of seeing the majestic mountain. The probability of seeing Mt. Fuji from the city is less than 50%, but if you intend to hike Mt. Fuji, summer is the official climbing season. Trails and mountain facilities are fully operational during these months.

Fall (October to late November)

autumn mt fuji

Autumn gives you the most spectacular views of Mt. Fuji. From October to November, Mt. Fuji and its surrounding areas become the best autumn foliage viewing. Head to Lake Kawaguchiko for the best sightseeing spot to enjoy Fuji-san’s autumn colors.

Winter (December to February)

mt fuji winter

The best time to see the beautiful Mt. Fuji is during winter. It’s most visible during this season when the air is drier. When it’s winter, you can clearly see the famous snow-covered peak that makes it the iconic landmark that it is. However, climbing the mountain during winter isn’t recommended, as it can be really cold and dangerous, especially for inexperienced climbers.

Spring (March to May)

spring mt fuji

Mt. Fuji is also scenic during springtime when its surrounding areas are in full bloom. If you want to see Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms, the best places to take nice photos are in Lake Kawaguchi, Tokyo Skytree, the Chureito Pagoda, and during the Fuji Shibazakura Festival. Do note that there may be days that Mt. Fuji is not as visible during these dates, compared to winter months.
