Private Tour Description:

ANNUNCIATION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

The tour will begin with the church of the “Annunciation of the Virgin Mary” or “Evangelismos tis Theotokou”. It’s an Orthodox Church which is located very near the entrance of the old port Mandraki. Is a copy of the St. John’s the Baptist catholic church in the Medieval City which was built by the Knights of St John Hospitallers. The Church is styled as a 3 aisled gothic basilica with a wooden roof. The roof contains a beautiful blend of Byzantine and Gothic elements. Due to the needs of the Orthodox denomination, the interior was adjusted in 1947 according to their requirements. The frescos were pained by the hagiographer extraordinaire, Photis Kontoglou (1952- 1962 A.D.) However, it still remains as it was on the outside.

OUR LADY OF FILERIMOS

As we move on from this breathtaking site, we venture out of Rhodes Town and come upon the West Coast. Here, the Church of “Our Lady of Filerimos” awaits us. It is situated atop the Filerimos hill - the Acropolis of Ancient Lalisos. In the days of early Christianity, this was the temple of Athena Polias. It was turned into a Christian three-aisled basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Since then, the Church has become well known for housing the Virgin of Filerimos (Our Lady of Filerimos), which is an icon for the Island. The “Lady of Filerimos” is kept in the monastery surrounded by cloisters and cells. The monastery was constructed in the 14th century under the rule of the Knights of St. John. Today the icon can be seen at the Blue Chapel of the National Museum of Montenegro, in Filerimos Monastery you can see a copy of it

THE WAY OF THE CROSS

If you cross the outside fence opposite the entrance, you will be treated to the sight of the beautiful “Way of the Cross”. It’s a paved corridor with engravings on one side. The entire pathway is perched on pedestals that represent the Passion of the Christ. When you come to the end, you are witness to an 18-meter tall Cross. There is even a staircase that leads to the top for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the west and east coast of the island.

ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI

As we return, we take the road of Monte Smith. The road meanders through the Ancient Acropolis of Rhodes Town. One the way you are treated to stunning views of the City and the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. The first site we see as we arrive at the Gate of St Athanasius of the Medieval City, is the Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi. This is the official Latin Rite Parish church of Rhodes; it was completed in 1939. Larger than the Santa Maria, this Church eventually became the Parish church of the Franciscan Mission in Rhodes.

AGIOS FANOURIOS

The Gate of St Athanasius is the point where your walking guided tour begins. The tour will take you through the Old Town to visit the Orthodox church of Agios Fanourios (St Fanourios). It is located at the namesake street in the Medieval Town of Rhodes. Built in the 13th century A.D, the interior adorned with beautiful frescos. During the Ottoman Occupation, it was officiated as a Mesgit (Small Mosque). Before the Ottoman Period, there is no known testimony for its name. The Italian Archaeological Service preserved its interior during the 1920s. Following WWII, it was taken over by the Greeks and then inaugurated and dedicated to Agios Fanourios in 1946.

SAINT JOHN OF THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLERS

The walking guided tour will take you next to the Grand Master Palace where the ruins of the Catholic church of Saint John’s of the Knights Hospitallers await. The Knights officially handed over rule to the Ottomans on December 27th 1522 A.D. Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent himself prayed at this church. It was later to become the most important Muslim place of worship, the “Great Mosque of Rhodes”. The temple, like many others on the island was a three-aisled gothic basilica with a wooden roof. However, an unfortunate explosion occurred that destroyed it. The Metropolitan Church of “ Virgin Mary’s Annunciation” mimics the patterns of this temple.

VIRGIN MARY OF THE BOURGOU

As we proceed through the tour, we go down the Street of the Knights, and pass the Ippocratous Square and the Martyron Evreon Square with the Seahorses Fountain. Here awaits the Panagia tou Bourgou (Virgin Mary of Burgos). This is another gothic basilica with three aisles; however, it also features two arcades created by four columns and pointed arches. Built in the 14th century, the Church also goes by the “ Church of the Virgin Mary of Mercy ”. Partial restoration has occurred over the years and the area is open to the public. Even music events are held here at times.

ST PANTELEIMONAS

• The final stop on our tour is the Orthodox Church of St Panteleimonas. Located on the Northeast end of Medieval Town, near Agia Ekaterini’s Gate, it was constructed after the first Ottoman Siege on July 27th, 1480 AD. The day is commemorated with The Day of the Churches Celebration. There is no evidence of it being turned in to a Mosque during the Ottoman Period. According to Allert Gabriel, who visited Rhodes in 1923, it had become a residence for Jewish families. However, it became a customs office run by Italians at an unknown time. The British used it as a police station, and after the Second World War, it was used as a shelter for refugees. The Metropolitan Bishop of Rhodes, on one of his visits, realized the site was a temple. After considerable restoration work in collaboration with the Archaeological Service, the Church was consecrated on April 25th 1948 A.D.

Towards the end of your tour, you can choose to go back to your hotel, to your ship, or stay in the Old Town to visit the area on your own. The ship is docked just a quarter of a mile away but returning back on foot is your own responsibility.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

The price of the tours includes a Mercedes Benz vehicle with a professionally licensed English-speaking Driver (and/or Tour Guide for guided tours), all vehicle, driver, Tour Guide expenses, insurance, and personalized customer service.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?

Except when otherwise stated, tour prices do not include entrance fees to monuments, museums, or any other sites visited, lunch, gratuities, or other client personal expenses.

PRIVATE TOURS, SHORE EXCURSIONS, TRANSFERS

We have been providing shore excursions and private tours to cruise passengers and those visiting Rhodes by plane for over 35 years. We’ve never had an unfortunate accident over all these years. The vehicles of our associate tour/drivers and minibus/drivers are regularly maintained for optimal safety and performances. By booking any tour/service via this website you accept that vehicles are mechanical objects subject to various unpredictable malfunctions that can happen unexpectedly during your service. At no time will you hold RhodesPrivateTours.com responsible or liable for any vehicle malfunctions mechanical or otherwise or issue public complaints for matters beyond our control. In the case of an accident caused physical and mental damage, the liability lies exclusively with the participating vehicles.

We also recommend buying travel insurance to provide extra security during your travel to Greece. Your booking with us serves as an acknowledgment that you accept the Terms of Service and have made the necessary arrangements to minimize disappointments while traveling, and you absolve Rhodes PrivateTours.com of any liability due to circumstances beyond our control.

ADDITIONAL PASSENGERS

On shore excursions, we only accept passengers that have been booked in advance. Any last-minute additions to the number of passengers must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance so we can update your reservation voucher and revise the new price of the tour. In order to comply with Port Authority and security, we are required to present the reservation voucher when asked by security officials. We can only transport the number of passengers declared in that voucher.

TOURING WITH CHILDREN

Tours offered are geared toward adult participants. The content and commentary during private guided tours may include subjects such as History, Ancient Rhodes, Architecture, Culture, and other subjects that children may or may not find interesting. The tours provided are not geared toward interests of children.

If you are interested in “kid friendly” activities, we can suggest other venues you can explore separately during your stay in Rhodes that are more suitable for children. The tours we offer are rich in historical and cultural content that is most understood and appreciated by adults who share such interests.

YOUR TOUR-DRIVER (CHAUFFEUR)

For the Driving Tours (Chauffeured Tours) you are provided a private tour with a Driver who is NOT a Licensed Tour Guide and will not provide services of a guide.

Greece has strict laws and regulations in place to protect licensed tour guides. This makes it unlawful for Tour Drivers to offer commentary about sites outside the vehicle. In order for us to comply with Hellenic laws, Tour Drivers may not accompany our guests inside monuments and museums. Only licensed Tour Guides may guide you at the sites you visit.

For your safety inside the vehicle, drivers provide commentary only when it is deemed safe to do so while driving. When your driver must concentrate during various driving conditions, please refrain from any distracting behavior as your safety during the tour is our top priority.

AMBIENCE INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE

If you have preferences regarding A/C, heat, or typically experience motion sickness while in a moving vehicle, please feel free to let your driver know immediately so he can accommodate your needs. If you do not make your needs known to your driver, he would not know how to make your tour more comfortable. If you have difficulty hearing your driver speak, please ask him to speak louder. Only licensed tour guides are lawfully permitted to use microphones and audio systems inside the vehicle.

If you are experiencing any issues or problems during the tour, please call us at the telephone number provided. If you do not have a working cell phone, please ask your Tour-Driver or your Tour Guide to call the office from his cell phone so we can help you and resolve any issues you may be experiencing.

Rhodes, the son of legend Dusty Rhodes and younger half-brother of Dustin “Goldust” Rhodes, went through several permutations that attempted to turn his proficiency inside the ring and story outside it into stardom. It never quite worked, so he bet on himself — first as a touring star across Japan and the American independent circuit, then as one of the founding executives behind All Elite Wrestling.

He rose to new heights outside WWE. He also understood he could only climb so high without the monolith that rules American wrestling (and the fact he booked himself into a corner at AEW, but that’s beside the point).

Thus, he left AEW and returned to the company that had repeatedly done his family dirty since Dusty emerged as a self-made star outside the then-WWF, resisting overtures to join the company as it gobbled up regional competitors across the United States. Rhodes eventually capitulated and joined Vince McMahon’s company, not as a world beater but as a polka dot-clad midcarder. His brother, once “The Natural” in WCW, was turned into an androgynous, Hollywood-obsessed pest. Both were able to turn these go-nowhere gimmicks into something better — Goldust, in particular, was iconic while being simultaneously ahead of and behind its time — but neither were world champions.

Now Rhodes returns where he fell short in 2023; the main event of WrestleMania. He couldn’t overcome Reigns and The Bloodline last year. He may have to face those same long odds again on Sunday if he and Seth Rollins can’t topple Reigns and The Rock on Saturday. Here are your main events for WrestleMania XL.
