‘Foot-on-speakers solos’ … Luke Hemmings of 5 Seconds of Summer.

5 Seconds of Summer review – formulaic net-generation pop

O2 Arena, London The Australian band’s show certainly connects with screaming fans, but it’s hard to banish the scepticism

“T his is the part where I write a song,” announces guitarist Michael Clifford, somehow picking out London-based theme suggestions from the deafening teen screams like the most libidinous ever episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway? The 30-second, one-note pop punk number he insta-composes is called Fish and Chips; last night it was Bangers and Mash. Even the improvised efforts of Australia’s biggest Fall Out Boyband are becoming formulaic – unsurprising, for the band writing the program code for net-generation pop success.

Little about the momentous rise of 5 Seconds of Summer, presumably named after a UK weather forecast for April, has been left to chance. Originally a bunch of baggy-vested teenage YouTube celebrities with millions of views for video covers of Chris Brown, Bieber and Wheatus , they wrote early material with a cross-section of pop and emo big-hitters – Good Charlotte, Busted, McFly, various One Direction writers – and were broken worldwide by supporting 1D in 2013. With last year’s second album Sounds Good Looks Good bagging them their second US No 1, they’re the sound of the industry’s morbid fixation on play counts and clickability ratios finally paying off.

Their total lack of arena spectacle, probably down to a chronic case of pyro aversion after Clifford’s hair caught fire on stage at Wembley last year, highlights their serious rock aspirations. A couple of foot-on-speakers guitar solos, a name-drop for Bad Brains and Clifford having stickers reading “cock and balls” on his guitar suggest they aspire to punk acceptance, but while they’re bashing out torrents of trite teen-romance emo pop (Money, Outer Space, Good Girls, basically the whole set) it’s unlikely. Hey Everybody! rips off Hungry Like the Wolf so shamelessly that Duran Duran have writing credits. Amnesia, with its Frank Turner folk verse and X Factor chorus, is instantly forgettable. “Stop loving me to death,” sings Clifford with the desperate authenticity of an emo Ken doll. 5SOS think they’re a pupal Green Day ; in fact they’re a slightly more angst-ridden Mr Tumble .

5 Seconds of Summer … their show is relatively short on spectacle following a nasty mishap last year.

To their credit, At the Hop remake She’s Kinda Hot is kinda catchy, frontman Luke Hemmings has a knowing charisma and their audience connection is undeniable. When the crowd raise personalised confessional signs during Jet Black Heart – “I am an emotional eater”, “I am a survivor” – you feel you should hold up a sheet reading: “I am a cynical middle-aged Guardian critic; this isn’t aimed at me.” But like McBusted before them, 5SOS exist to turn rock-inclined teens into good, pliable little consumers, a gateway drug to the hard stuff of Bastille. “We’re the voice of the new generation,” they sing on Permanent Vacation. God help us.

The day that every  5 Seconds Of Summer fan had been patiently waiting for since 2016 finally arrived on Thursday, Feb 23. The 5SOS boys released their highly anticipated new single “Want You Back” (unfortunately not a HAIM cover ) and swiftly announced an intimate-venues tour. But what have the Australian boys been up to until now?

The group dropped their sophomore album Sounds Good Feels Good in October 2015, then went on to do a ton of other projects besides a new album. Of course, fans are excited to see what is coming next for the band, but if you want to educate yourself on the band’s whereabouts since SGFG , check out what Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood have all been doing over the past three years.

5 Seconds of Summer Guitarist Michael Clifford Talks 'New Sound & Direction' of Third Album…

November 2015: Release  How Did We End Up Here  Documentary

After the release of their second studio album, the group released a concert documentary about their rise to fame and their tour. The movie features behind the scenes looks at live on the road, their personal relationships, and included live versions of some of their hit songs.

February 2016: Embark On Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour

In order to promote their second studio album, the group headlined their Sounds Live Feels Live World Tour, making stops in 101 different places, including Asia, The U.K. and the U.S. — including a headlining show at Madison Square Garden.

July 2016: Release  Ghostbusters Single, “Girls Talk Boys”

The boys released a groovy single for the all-female  Ghostbusters  reboot in 2016.  “Girls Talk Boys” featured yearning lyrics and the boys singing in falsetto set to a ghost-themed music video.

December 2016: Release  Sounds Good Feels Good  B-Sides

The band released previously unheard material as a part of their b-sides edition of  Sounds Good Feels Good.  The release featured nine unreleased songs, including an acoustic version of their Hot 100 hit “She Looks So Perfect.”

January 2017: Two of the Guys Become Dog Dads

A post shared by Calum Hood (@calumhood) on Jun 3, 2017 at 12:35am PDT

While taking a break from music, a couple of the 5SOS lads decided to become dog parents. In 2017, both Hemmings and Hood got dogs that they heavily documented on their Instagram accounts for months and months after.

January 2017: Feature On One Ok Rock Album, Fueling New Album rumors

5SOS was featured on the track “Take What You Want” from Japan-based rock band One OK Rock. The song featured emotionally charged lyrics over an impactful rock song, along with some epic screaming.

August 2017: Continue the Sounds Good Feels Live Tour Overseas

Though the band promised an album in 2017, they still had no new material by summer. But, they continued to play shows throughout the year, making stops in Japan and Australia, which they documented in a series of vlogs.

December 2017/Early 2018: Hint That New Stuff Is On the Horizon

In December 2017, guitarist Michael Clifford spoke to Billboard  about their new sound and upcoming album. “I think the reason it’s taken so long is because we haven’t just wanted to get it to a place where we’re, like, happy… We want it to be perfect. I think when all the new stuff comes out, it’s like a departure of our old sound but it still keeps elements of all of the things we liked about it. It was just time for us to change.”

February 2018: Release “Want You Back”

After teasing new material for almost a year, the boys changed their Twitter header to the words “Want You Back,” which led to speculation from fans that a new single would be on the way. They later released “Want You Back” own Feb. 23. The poppy rock track was followed by a tour announcement. Check out the song and dates below.

5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer may have gained international exposure opening for One Direction, but they've always insisted that they're a band, not a boy band. And they're backing that up with this debut. Writing all their own songs and enlisting veteran pop-punk producer John Feldman (Goldfinger, The Used), the Australian four-piece deliver a set that's more Blink-182 than 98 Degrees. Not only do the jagged riffs and spastic sing-along hooks evoke Blink; the lyrics do, too. "She's got a naughty tattoo, in a place I want to get to," sings teenage lothario Luke Hemmings on "18." The global smash "She Looks So Perfect" is joined by a mix of spunky styles, from the midtempo anthem "Long Way Home" to the lighter-waving slow jam "Beside You." 5SOS are a band all right, and a capable one at that.
