When your girl says that she really like Royal Wood, you may feel a little funny and not have a clue what she means, you may even be more confused when she says she has tickets to go and see Royal Wood. Don't panic, it's a musician and he is AMAZING!

So my girl comes and tells me that she is a big fan of Royal Wood, I did not know how to respond, I have to query just to what the lovely lady was talking about and that is when I did some research and found out it is most certainly a musician.

At the performance I realised how much of a great musician he actually is. His song 'forever and ever' just has this amazing vibe to it, it is very relaxing and the pop singer has definitely done right. The song is very warming and made couples get closer and closer to each other as the gentle chords led into a crescendo and the chorus picked up! people began jumping and dancing and just enjoying themselves. Not even I could help smile and dance, just a little though, can't loose my manly image

In all honesty Royal Wood managed to impress me and

that is not what I would call an easy feat, so I will give him credit for that and encourage any to go and see him.

He may just put a smile on your moody face as he did for me

Another amazing concert by this immensely talented and funny artist!

The Aeolian Hall was the perfect venue once again for Royal's beautiful piano playing and soaring vocals. He switched back and forth between guitars and piano and was adeptly accompanied on electric and upright bass by Steve, his bandmate.

We enjoyed hearing his new tunes and singing along to his hits.

His stories were a treat, as usual and the fact that his wife was in the audience made him even more inclined to joke around.

After 2 hours of straight music, and a standing ovation, Royal reappeared to give us 2 more songs. For the very last one, he picked up his mandolin, came out into the audience and had us sing along to "Yesterday". A cool way to end a great concert!

His shows at this Hall are always intimate and perfect. I can understand why he says that it's his favourite venue. All I can say us Wow!

Super talented musician and singer! His charming banter throughout the set created a nice bridge between performer and audience. On this night Royal Wood was the opening act, and it definitely left the audience wanting to hear more of his music. Great band, beautiful harmonies, very personal and touching stories shared about the songs and what inspired them. Definitely want to see this performer again!

ROYAL WOOD IN CONCERT: Canadian singer-songwriter Royal Wood boasts a sound as distinguished as his name. His expertly crafted compositions feature an assortment of lush orchestral instruments, and an arsenal of talented players bring songs like "Forever and Ever" and "Not Giving Up" to life at his live shows. Wood always delivers on tour with his charismatic demeanor and virtuosic piano skills, and his 2014 album The Burning Bright has anticipation for future tour dates at fever pitch. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Born and raised in the Canadian city of Petersborough, Wood grew up immersed in music, taking up the piano at age four and dabbling in a variety of other instruments during grade school. While studying business at McGill University, he spent time performing in various Montreal jazz clubs, honing his songwriting and guitar skills. His 2003 debut release The Milkweed EP drew significant praise from critics, paving the way for his equally acclaimed 2004 full-length debut Tall Tales. The album drew Wood comparisons to luminaries Jeff Buckley and the Beach Boys, encouraging him to write his most ambitious material yet for sophomore album A Good Enough Day, which featured extensive orchestration and guest musicians like Hawklsey Workman and Kurt Winghammer. In 2012, Wood landed on Canadian charts with his fourth LP We Were Born to Glory, following up in 2014 with The Burning Bright and an accompanying tour.

Royal Wood always puts on a great show!

I've seen Royal Wood many times over the last ten years or so. He writes beautiful songs that have become so special to my family. His voice is gorgeous. It was a gift to be able to see him again at the National Arts Centre. He was fun and funny despite clearly being exhausted and his band was really great. Overall, I look forward to the next time I get to see him live.

Royal Wood is super talented

Great show. Venue was small so the setting was very inimate. Amazing singer and super talented. This was our third time seeing him

Royal Wood delivers!

As always, Royal put on an excellent performance. His backup band was a bit more on the "electric" side this time around which added a new flavour to his already unique style. Royal's songwriting skills have long impressed me and he never ceases to entertain.

Outstanding!

Incredible from start to finish with an appropriate mix of old favourites with his new material. Rose Cousins was an excellent compliment to Royal's artistry and the inclusion of the NAC orchestra added a whole new dimension to the show. We were introduced to Royal Wood when he opened for David Gray at the NAC several years ago and it was great to see him as the headliner on the main stage this time around. Bravo!

Royal Wood Show May Long Weekend

For once not having a cottage turned out to be a good thing! The show was amazing. Great music, great on stage presence... Love the lighting and great venue. Not a bad seat in the house.

Royal Wood = Really Wonderful

This was the second Royal Wood concert I have attended, with my teenage daughter, at the NAC. My daughter had introduced me to his music after discovering him on social media last year. Since then, we having been enjoying his CD and listening to him on CBC Radio occasionally. Royal Wood is a multi-talented, diverse musician and performer, and sommelier student. Creatively, he had arranged with the NAC to have Ontario wines and beers of his choosing sold before the event and during intermission. Much to everyone's pleasant surprise, concert goers were allowed to bring their beverages into the Theatre for the show. How civilized. I did not partake myself, so my observations are totally sober. Royal Wood is foremost an excellent songwriter, wearing his heart on his sleeve in a way that is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. HIs lyrics are inspired by his own experiences, are deeply meaningful, clever and poetic. He plays the piano like Billy Joel, and a number of other instruments just as well, and was joined on stage by a fine band and back-up singers. His music covers a range of genres, from folk to rock, but each song, and particularly his voice, are entirely his own. As a performer, he is completely comfortable and confident on the stage, and engages personally with the audience, sharing the stories that form the background to his songs and his life, and making us laugh. Finding Royal Wood and his music is like finding an excellent, but perhaps not well known, bottle of wine outside of the Vintages section. Royal is a true artist, who has been successful in developing his own style and an impressive body of creative work, despite a lack of broader recognition and commercial success. He must have worked incredibly hard to get to where he is now. Clearly the standing ovation at the end of the night was well deserved.

Excellent show, intimate performance.

We were so impressed by Royal Wood's performance. He never ceases to amaze me everytime I see him live. My husband and I said that we want to check out more shows at the NAC because the sound quality is amazing and it feels incredibly intimate.

Royally Entertained

Outstanding! Great mix of old and new material and wine in your seats at the NAC....WOW! Sure hope to see Royal Wood on the bill at the NAC again in the very near future.

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Royal Wood has established himself as a true musical talent. Since being proclaimed “Songwriter of the Year” by iTunes (2010), Wood has continued to evolve and hone his musical craft while maintaining a unique identity. With his eighth full-length studio album, 2022's What Tomorrow Brings , Wood reaches new emotional depths and delivers his most powerful collection of music to date. "Although it was finished before the pandemic even began, the time I had during those unpredictable years allowed me to dig deep and fine-tune the album in a way I've never been able to before. I know, without a doubt, this is the best work of my career".

Royal Wood has received multiple JUNO nominations, 5 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, and a #1 added song at Hot AC. Having seen high-profile features on programs such as Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice , his catalogue has amassed over 15 million streams worldwide. Most recently, Danish manufacturer VELUX utilized the 2007 single "A Good Enough Day" in a promotional campaign, generating a surge of newfound fans across Europe. Capturing the same sonic and emotional depth of these recordings, Wood translates his songs into astounding live performances. This live prowess has led to performances in world-class venues and support-billing for globally-celebrated artists such as Bonnie Raitt and David Gray.

Following a headline performance at Toronto's iconic Massey Hall, Royal Wood released his latest album, What Tomorrow Brings , in November 2022. Crafted alongside world-renowned producers Linda Perry ( Adele, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera ) and Jamie Scott ( Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber ), the album draws from deeply personal points in Wood's life, effectively capturing the emotion of these moments. "During the writing of this album, I lost a parent, fell in love, got married and became a father. These experiences definitely allowed me to write from a place of pure vulnerability and create the most carefully crafted and inspired lyrics of my career".

What Tomorrow Brings has received critical praise and support across both Radio and Digital Streaming Platforms. Respective singles have featured on Sirius XM's North Americana and Stingray Radio's Adult Alternative, Pop Adult , and Canadian Indie . Digitally, singles have seen placements on various editorial playlists such as Spotify's New Music Friday Canada, Every Day Favourites, Contemporary Blend, indie pop & chill, Folk & Friends; Apple Music's New In Singer/Songwriter, Breaking Singer-Songwriter, and New in Singer-Songwriter ; and Amazon Music's Brand New Music, Fresh Folk & Acoustic, and Finely Tuned. Alongside the release of What Tomorrow Brings , Wood also granted fans a behind-the-scenes look into the album with a Mini-documentary that premiered via Exclaim!. Now, along with an opening slot on Bonnie Raitt's upcoming tour, Royal Wood continues to expand on the success of What Tomorrow Brings , approaching 300,000 Monthly Listeners on Spotify and garnering fans from around the world.

Royal Wood shares new single, “Starting Again”

Royal Wood Shares Bittersweet Single “Starting Again” From Upcoming EP

Beloved two-time JUNO and five-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee – singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Royal Wood has shared a dazzling new single and lyric video for “ Starting Again ”. Capturing the bittersweet aftermath of a love lost, “Starting Again” blends elements of country, Americana, and adult contemporary, while Wood’s soulful vocals convey the ache of moving on while still holding onto memories. “Starting Again” will join the previously shared title track “ Just Another Day ” on Wood’s upcoming EP Just Another Day,  due September 22 via Cordova Bay Records.

“This song was inspired by the timeless idea of love and loss,” Wood shares on the new single. ”Since the beginning of stories and recorded art, the theme is as old as the sea. Two ships sailing together, go different routes, never to return to each other again. Fate had other plans and more adventures ahead. So you start again…”

Wood wrote and recorded the song with Jamie Scott (Ed Sheeran, Major Lazer, Rag’N Bone Man) while they were working on tracks for his last album What Tomorrow Brings .

“We both loved the song, but agreed it didn’t fit with the album. I am so glad it gets to have a voice on this EP.”

Cherry-picked as direct support for legendary American singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bonnie Raitt, Wood is set to kick off a Canada-wide tour starting in Penticton, BC on September 22 and wrapping up in Toronto on October 6 at Massey Hall. Tickets are selling fast, with the shows in Penticton, Calgary, London, and Toronto having already sold out. See below for a full routing.

“Bonnie Raitt is a living musical legend,” says Wood on the upcoming tour. “I had the honour of opening her last national Canadian tour in 2017, and to be once again asked to share the stage with her and her band on this latest tour is a dream come true. I’m a very lucky artist – and I know it.”

The new EP features four freshly minted tracks plus a reimagined version of “One Eye Open”, featuring songstress Bryn. Wood co-wrote the song with Songwriting Hall of Famer Linda Perry who has penned hits for the likes of Adele, Christina Aguilera, and P!nk.

Royal Wood is once again working with the Canadian Cancer Society, to raise money and awareness for the charity during his upcoming tour. Volunteers from the organization will be stationed at every show, with donated Royal Wood merch as incentives for fans to meet with the volunteers and sign up for monthly donations.

“I am very blessed to have my career, and therefore I am fortunate to have a platform to help those who need it. Everyone in the world is touched by cancer. Sadly, I have seen first hand how quickly cancer can destroy families, and rip loved ones away. I am honoured to bring The Canadian Cancer Society on the road with me on the Bonnie Raitt tour. And I truly hope we can do some serious good in the fight against cancer.”

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

royal wood tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Royal Wood Story

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Royal Wood has established himself as a true musical talent. Since being proclaimed “Songwriter of the Year” by iTunes, Wood has continued to evolve and hone his musical craft while maintaining a unique identity. His eighth full-length studio album, 2022’s What Tomorrow Brings , was recently up “For Your Consideration” for BEST FOLK ALBUM at the 2024 Grammys . With this album, Wood reaches new emotional depths and delivers his most powerful collection of music to date. Crafted alongside world-renowned producers Linda Perry (Adele, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera) and Jamie Scott (Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber), the album draws from deeply personal points in Wood’s life, effectively capturing the emotion of these moments. “During the writing of this album, I lost a parent, fell in love, got married and became a father. These experiences definitely allowed me to write from a place of pure vulnerability and create the most carefully crafted and inspired lyrics of my career”.

Royal Wood has received multiple JUNO nominations, 5 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, and a #1 added song at Hot AC Radio. Having seen high-profile features on programs such as Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice , his catalogue has amassed over 15 million streams worldwide. Most recently his single “A Good Enough Day” was used in a TV campaign that generated a surge in Spotify attention that is now approaching 3 MILLION streams. Capturing the same sonic and emotional depth of these recordings, Wood translates his songs into astounding live performances. This live prowess has led to headline performances in world-class venues like Massey Hall in Toronto and The Paradiso in Amsterdam, as well as “special guest” billing on full national tours for globally celebrated artists such as Bonnie Raitt and David Gray .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
