MENU: Crown Grill Steakhouse on Princess Cruises

The Crown Grill Steakhouse is Princess’ signature steakhouse found on most of its cruise ships. The venue prides itself on its selection of fine cuts of steak and seafood.

Princess Cruises Crown Grill

Crown Grill has a cover charge of $29 per person. It includes a full meal with one main course. Additional main courses cost $10 each.

You can expect a 1.5 to a two-hour dining experience in the steakhouse unless you want to catch a show, then advise your server ahead of time and they will expedite your meal.

Even though guests tend to use the steak house for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays, you by no means need to wear a suit and tie. As long as you’re wearing nice slacks or dark jeans, you’ll be fine.

The venue is quiet and set off the main walkway, usually with a bar dividing the steakhouse from people passing by.

Is the Crown Grill Worth it? Menu and Review

Princess Cruises is known for its exceptional food and a firm favourite with many cruisers is the Crown Grill specialty restaurant . There is a reason why it was named among the “Best Cruise Ship Steakhouses” by  USA TODAY . In this post, I share my thoughts on the Crown Grill and its menu.

About Crown Grill

The Crown Grill is a specialty dining venue found on many Princess Cruises ships and which was first introduced on Crown Princess. The cruise line’s signature steakhouse is featured onboard:

  • Caribbean Princess
  • Crown Princess
  • Emerald Princess
  • Enchanted Princess
  • Grand Princess
  • Regal Princess
  • Royal Princess
  • Ruby Princess
  • Majestic Princess
  • Sky Princess
  • Discovery Princess

This specialty restaurant offers cruise passengers top-notch steak, chops and seafood, all cooked to your individual preferences. There is even a salt menu (read on to find out more)!

steakhouse

Crown Grill has a cover charge of $39 per person, which includes an appetizer, salad or soup, one main and dessert. Side dishes are included and additional main courses can be added for $10 each. Drinks at the Crown Grill can be purchased as you would in the Main Dining Room and your drinks package can be used here.

The specialty restaurant is open from 5pm to 11pm nightly but reservations are recommended as it’s a popular restaurant and walk-ins can’t be guaranteed a table. You can now make reservations for the Crown Grill and other specialty restaurants using Dine My Way .

Crown Grill Atmosphere

The Crown Grill has a relaxed atmosphere but be aware that dress codes still apply and if you dine on a formal evening, men will be required to wear smart trousers.

There are various table sizes to suit those dining in couples or with friends. There are booths for tables of four, which help to create a more intimate dining experience.

There’s a large table for up to 8 people situated away from the main dining area, which is surrounded by wine racks. This is perfect for a special occasion or to enjoy a meal with the whole family. I would recommend requesting this table specifically if you want to secure this spot.

The dark wood decor is featured throughout the restaurant. You can certainly tell it’s a steakhouse as soon as you walk in.

Crown Grill decor

The open kitchen provides an element of theatre to your meal as you watch the chefs carefully preparing dishes in full view of the restaurant. The bar in front of many Crown Grills will sometimes have live entertainment but you are far enough away for it not to encroach on your conversations over dinner.

Gourmet Salt Selection

Crown Grill has a gourmet salt menu

Hawaiian Black Salt (Hiwa Kai) combined with activated charcoal, this solar evaporated Pacific sea salt has a stunning black colour, silky texture and natural saline flavour

Smoked Applewood Salt (Yakima) sweet Applewood from the Yakima Valley fuels the fire that flavours this smoked sea salt with a subtle fruit wood taste. This paired well with steak.

Himalayan Mountain Pink Salt , experience this exotic ingredient that boasts a robust salt and mineral flavour, which is said to provide many health benefits and remove toxins from the body

Molton Dutch Fudge Obsession , rich and warm with a soft centre served with double chocolate ice cream

Lemon Meringue Pudding Tart , macadamia nut shortbread and white chocolate tuile

Seven Layer S’Mores Stack , Graham cracker, marshmallow and milk chocolate

The Crown Dependence , the executive pastry chef’s sampling of their favourite desserts

Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar with honey roasted peanuts. This dessert is a tribute to the love and marriage of peanut butter and chocolate. The base of this delicious dessert, developed by Chef Love, is a moist cake made from almond flour and brown butter topped with a silky smooth peanut butter cream and topped with a layer of milk chocolate mousse.

Crown Grill Review

I’ve dined at the Crown Grill on three occasions to date and particularly appreciate the attentive service and the quality of the dishes.

Dining at Crown Grill, Regal Princess

I can highly recommend the scallop appetizer, filet mignon and the grilled lobster tails with garlic butter. I was pleasantly surprised by the creamed spinach side dish, which made a great accompanying dish.

When we first dined at the Crown Grill there wasn’t a limit on main courses but on our most recent visit, additional main courses were chargeable ($10). To be honest, you won’t go hungry at the Crown Grill because the portion sizes are adequate without needing a second main dish. I haven’t always been able to fit dessert in (and I can usually always find room for dessert!).

The waiting staff are on hand to offer suggestions and will even provide a selection of steak knives according to the cut of meat you choose. There is a trolley that displays the various steaks on the menu that is brought to your table to help you make your decision.

I particularly enjoy the Crown Grill’s relaxed atmosphere whilst still maintaining a subtle sophistication. I’ve chosen to eat at the Crown Grill on more than one formal night.

It has its own dedicated area and kitchen as opposed to the pop-up Sterling Steakhouse found in the buffet on other Princess ships. I could never bring myself to eat steak from a melamine plate on Sapphire Princess.

Booking is highly recommended because I’ve never seen this specialty restaurant quiet. You can book a table at the restaurant’s front desk or via your cabin’s telephone.

Crown Grill is a must for meat-lovers and I wouldn’t go without visiting it at least once on a Princess cruise. The $29 cover charge is excellent value for money, given the quality of food on the menu and portion sizes.

Princess Cruises Crown Grill Review

Share this post:

Found on several cruise ships in the fleet, the Crown Grill is Princess Cruises’ signature steakhouse. Of course, we could not pass up the chance to dine here during our Majestic Princess Alaska cruise this summer. How did the restaurant compare to other steakhouses at sea? We dive into the details with our exclusive Princess Cruises Crown Grill review.

On Majestic Princess, the Princess Cruises Crown Grill is located aft on Deck 7 with a large open-concept restaurant and bar.

The bar features live music and a signature cocktail list. Thus, it is the perfect place to enjoy drinks before or after your multi-course meal at the restaurant.

the crown grill princess cruises

Knowing that we had to test out the restaurant during our first cruise with the brand, we booked our reservation pre-cruise using the online cruise planner. Unfortunately, the only times available were 5:30 pm or 7:30 pm.

We opted for 5:30 pm on the last night of the cruise, hoping we could move the dining time a little later once onboard the ship. Subsequently, we had no luck and were stuck eating here early.

The Crown Grill is not one of the Majestic Princess restaurants that are included in the cruise fare. Like the other specialty restaurants on the ship, the up-charge is $29.99 per person. Comparatively, this is one of the least expensive steakhouses at sea.

Princess Cruises Crown Grill Review

The Crown Grill’s décor has a classic new England charm. The venue features lots of dark wood tones, ornate carpeting, and some art. The rich color palette makes the restaurant feel warm and inviting.

Dining at the Crown Grill on Majestic Princess

We were about 15 minutes late to our 5:30 pm reservation. Surprisingly, the restaurant was quite busy already. Though, we were quickly escorted to a table for two near the front of the restaurant.

Unlike other cruise ship steakhouses, the Crown Grill does not have a chicken option on the menu. Thus, I spoke with the hostess prior to dining here. She indicated that Heidi could order her entrée off the main dining room menu.

With many cruisers in the midst of their meals, it did take our waiter a while to come by our table to introduce himself and take our drink order. We opted for our typical cosmo and sidecar cocktails with this evening’s dinner.

Fortunately, there were starters, sides, and desserts on the menu for the wife to enjoy.

For appetizers, I went with the waiter’s recommendation of the spiny lobster cake. This piping hot appetizer was a crispy outer layer with plenty of lobster meat. It was different in texture than a typical crab cake, with less breading and more seafood.

Crab Cake at Princess Cruises Crown Grill

Heidi tried the watermelon salad, which was a light and refreshing way to start her meal.

With the night 7 main dining room menu featuring a turkey dinner, it was an easy choice for her entrée. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Princess Cruises Crown Grill review if I didn’t order a steak.

Reviewing the options, I decided to upgrade to the surf and turf with lobster for an additional $10. The waiter said I could pick any steak, and he recommended the ribeye.

This cut of beef was cooked to my requested medium rare. It was tender and juicy, but I did feel that it lacked flavor.

Surf and Turf at Crown Grill

However, the Maine lobster tail was a vast improvement over the main dining room entrée. It was served hot with just the right amount of seasoning to let the flavor of the lobster itself shine.

For side dishes, we ordered three selections, garlic & herb fries, red skin mashed potatoes, and sautéed wild mushrooms. Oddly, the waiter insisted on serving these selections to us instead of leaving the small plates on the table. Sadly, this meant that we only had a small serving of each of these side dishes.

For the most part, the sides were adequate, but nothing was really stand out.

As the restaurant was getting busier, our waiter seemed stretched thin among his tables. So, a different team member actually came by to take our dessert order.

the crown grill princess cruises

While we already thought the desserts in the main dining room were superior to other cruise lines, the Crown Grill’s desserts were even better.

Unable to decide on just two selections, we ordered three! Each dessert was richer and tastier than the next. It was a toss-up as to which one was my favorite.

The chocolate trifle had a rich chocolate sauce, gelato, and an airy sponge cake. The warm apple and rhubarb cobbler had a buttery, rich crust with filling that was just sweet enough and was topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. These desserts were a satisfying way to end our meal at Princess Cruises Crown Grill.

Recap of Princess Cruises Crown Grill Review

For cruisers looking for an elegant night out on a Princess Cruises’ ship, Crown Grill delivers an intimate, upscale experience. In fact, the Crown Grill certainly ranks as a top choice for cruise ship steakhouses.

While our service was slow, it was also the first cruise for the brand in over 15 months. We suspect the pacing would be better once the staff are back into their routines.

Nevertheless, the waitstaff were friendly and accommodating.

Inside the Crown Grill on Majestic Princess

With unique starters, surf and turf, and lavish desserts, the Crown Grill on Majestic Princess is well worth the up-charge price. In fact, we feel the restaurant is a superb value.

On our next Princess cruise, we will certainly dine at this restaurant again to sample more selections from the menu.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill

With walls of dark wood panelling and booths of leather, the décor inside the Crown Grill speaks to the fact that it is a traditional steakhouse. Imagine men in business suits, sitting in high back leather chairs reading the financial section of the newspaper — smoking cigars, drinking cognac and making fortunes.

Not to worry suits are not required, and the Crown Grill is not stuffy. Personally, I would dress as I would dress for the dining room but I was a little surprised that on our visit for dinner, the gentleman sitting next to us was wearing shorts, t-shirt and baseball cap.

Here’s what we ate at the Caribbean Princess Crown Grill

Bread Basket We were presented with a speciality breadbasket that was entirely different from what is typically served in the other dining rooms, but I was disappointed that there weren’t speciality butter or condiments on offer.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - Black Tiger Prawn and Papaya Salpicon

Black Tiger Prawn and Papaya Salpicon Served with a mustard seed aioli; the shrimp on top was warm in contrast to the salad underneath that was cold. Delicious, so much so that I didn’t want to share.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - Pan-Seared Pacific Scallops

Pan-Seared Pacific Scallops Fennel, celery and spring onion slaw, golden delicious dressing and Moroccan glaze 3 perfectly seared golden scallops with a pink center — simply delicious.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - Black and Blue Onion Soup

Black and Blue Onion Soup Flavoured with fresh thyme and Jack Daniels, the broth was light with tender onions. It was a modest change from the regular French onion soup served in the dining room, but the blue cheese Roquefort crust made it a bit overly salty for our taste.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - Shrimp and Pancetta Bisque

Shrimp and Pancetta Bisque Not my favourite as I found it a bit watery in texture (I prefer a thicker, creamier bisque) although it did have good flavour. Served with Chickpea Croutons.

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - New Zealand Double Lamb Chops with Rosemary Essence

New Zealand Double Lamb Chops with Rosemary Essence Again, this was not my favourite lamb chop as I’ve had better in the main dining room. Next time, I’ll order the steak, which is their speciality. Served with your choice of potato and fresh vegetables.

CruiseDirect

New York Strip Steak “Featuring the Finest Center Cuts from Sterling Silver Corn Fed Beef” Deliciously tender and moist with a perfect caramelised charred crust on the outside. Served with your choice of potato and fresh vegetables.

Crown Grill Gourmet Salt Selection

The addition of the gourmet salt selection was unique and made the entire experience very special.

The three salts — Himalayan Mountain Pink Salt, Hawaiian Black Salt (Hiwa Kai), and Smoked Applewood Salt (Yakima) all enhanced and altered the taste of the meat.

Our waiter BeBe provided us with a sample of all three salts to try with our meal. My preference was for the pink salt; finding the smoked salt too strong and the black salt too mild.

Dessert — The Crown Dependence

Leave room for dessert. It’s hard to choose from the four choices on the menu but rest assured there is a sampler named “The Crown Dependence”. – Molten Dutch Chocolate Fudge Obsession – Lemon Meringue Pudding Tart – Seven Layer S’mores Stack – Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar (Princess Cruises exclusive dessert by master chocolatier and pastry chef Norman Love )

Cruise Ship Specialty Dining – Caribbean Princess Crown Grill - The Crown Dependence

Of the four desserts presented; Hubby and I both preferred the lemon meringue and the molten lava cake. All beautifully plated.

On a multigenerational family cruise, my kids got to know their grandmother better — and my husband and I got free babysitting

  • My family has cruised several times and recently took my mother-in-law along on her first cruise.
  • Cruising with Grammy proved to be a great option for a multigenerational vacation.
  • Our experience on the Caribbean Princess was the perfect itinerary for older, first-time cruisers.

Insider Today

My kids are teenagers now, but we've been taking them on cruises since they were tiny. Each time we returned from our days at sea, I told my husband how much I wanted to take his parents on a cruise with us, as it seemed like the perfect multigenerational vacation to me for a variety of reasons. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly last year, and the devastating loss made me even more determined to get my mother-in-law, who my kids call Grammy, onto a cruise ship with my family.

We finally planned an eight-day cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess this March, and we were all so excited. Not only did a cruise ship seem like a perfect spot to keep me, my husband, our kids, and Grammy all entertained for an entire week, but I thought my mother-in-law, who enjoys a slower pace of life, would enjoy the build-your-own-schedule style of a cruise.

The multigenerational trip , for which one of my mother-in-law's best friends tagged along as her travel partner, proved to be an unforgettable memory for all of us. My kids left the ship feeling like they got to know their grandmother — who lives far from our Florida home in Pennsylvania — even better, and so did I.

Cruising was a great way to spend time together

My mother-in-law had never cruised before, so we chose to book the Caribbean Princess because we'd had great experiences with Princess Cruises before. Plus, it had a great mixture of days at sea and ports of call, and the ports we visited were easy ones to navigate: Princess Cays in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas.

The trip was a perfect environment for making memories with my mother-in-law and her friend. On days at sea, there were tons of things for us to do: family activities, like dinner or trivia, that we'd all do together; individual activities, like paper-flower-making classes for the retirees in our group; and activities in the ship's teen club for my kids. On port days, we planned excursions through Princess Cruises that allowed everyone in our party to experience the destination, regardless of speed or physical abilities.

My kids got to see their Grammy be adventurous

While we focused on port excursions that offered driving tours and other slower-paced ways to see the destinations, my mother-in-law was a great sport when it came to being adventurous. In Puerto Rico, she climbed 100 steps to the top of a tower in the El Yunque National Forest tropical rainforest and tried mofongo for the first time on the streets of San Juan. She also rode a Skyride to a spot 700 feet above the harbor in St. Thomas to take in beautiful, panoramic views and climbed out onto rocks overlooking the beach on Princess' private island, Princess Cays.

Related stories

Seeing their grandmother's desire to see and learn new things was fun for my kids, and as experienced travelers, they enjoyed helping her along the way.

We had great conversations during meals

Most nights on the ship, we had dinner together in one of the main dining rooms. One night, we even splurged on a specialty dining experience, paying a bit extra for a steakhouse dinner at Princess' fleetwide restaurant, Crown Grill. Dining aboard a cruise ship is often a multi-course experience that unfolds at a leisurely pace, so having an hour or two to chat with their grandmother each night was special for my kids.

To keep things interesting, we took a book of questions along with us on the trip, breaking it out while we waited for our food to arrive each night and asking questions like, "What's your favorite way to connect with nature?" or, "Do you think money can by happiness?" Hearing each other's answers was a great way for everyone to connect and learn about each other.

Even when it didn't go as planned, we found things to laugh about

Combining a large group when traveling can bring its share of stressful situations, but even in the chaos we found things to laugh about. My kids are still talking about the time Grammy and her friend went back to the tour bus without us in Puerto Rico, and we thought we lost them during our excursion to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. But, all miscommunications and frustrating moments aside, the trip made us stronger as a family and was well worth those moments of stress.

Yes, bringing Grammy along meant we got some free babysitting

Although my kids are now teenagers, having Grammy on board the ship to help out was an invaluable part of our vacation. My husband and I went to another specialty dining restaurant on board the ship for a date night and even stayed in town in St. Thomas for some grow-up time, sightseeing, and shopping while the kids returned to the ship with my mother-in-law.

Though we spent the bulk of our time hanging out together as a family, having some extra help aboard the ship allowed my husband and I to make some vacation memories with just the two of us.

She's always supported us, and it was nice to thank her

My mother-in-law has always been there for my husband and me. She has taken care of our kids while we reconnect by traveling together and shared wisdom with us when we're struggling with life's stresses. It was a true joy to share our vacation with her and treat her to a week of sunshine and sightseeing after all the ways she's supported us throughout our nearly 20 years of marriage. Cruising together as a family was a great way to thank her.

Being together held an unexpected benefit

The last two days of our sailing were days at sea and, early on the first day, we learned of a family tragedy that had occurred back in Pennsylvania, where most of my husband's family lives. The tragedy was significant enough that my mother-in-law probably would have gone home early if we had been on a vacation on land. But because we were in the middle of the ocean, we were unable to cut the trip short and spent two days together processing what had occurred.

While there's never an optimal time for a great loss to occur, we found ourselves grateful that we were close to my mother-in-law when the news came in so we could help her process her grief in those first few days. Had we been in Florida and she in Pennsylvania, we'd have felt powerless to help comfort her, but being together during that time proved to be invaluable.

Experiencing a family tragedy during our vacation wasn't in the plan, but it was a reminder to all of us of the importance of being close to family and experiencing the world together while we can.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

the crown grill princess cruises

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

the crown grill princess cruises

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

the crown grill princess cruises

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

the crown grill princess cruises

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

the crown grill princess cruises

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

the crown grill princess cruises

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

the crown grill princess cruises

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
