Event Details

One of heavy metal’s all-time greats, Judas Priest, will get the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary again this year with the launch of a new North American fall tour. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour will also feature Queensryche as openers and is being fueled by the highest charting album of Priest’s career, ‘Firepower,’ which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200.

There are few heavy metal bands that have managed to scale the heights that Judas Priest have during their nearly 50-year career. Their presence and influence remains at an all-time high as evidenced by 2018's 'Firepower' being the highest charting album of their career, a 2010 Grammy Award win for 'Best Metal Performance', plus being a 2006VH1 Rock Honors recipient and a 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination. Judas Priest originally formed in 1969in Birmingham, England (an area that many feel birthed heavy metal). Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing and Ian Hill would be the nucleus of musicians (along with several different drummers over the years) that would go on to change the face of heavy metal. After a 'feeling out' period of a couple of albums, 1974's 'Rocka Rolla' and 1976's 'Sad Wings of Destiny' this line-up truly hit their stride. The result was a quartet of albums that separated Priest from the rest of the hard rock pack-1977's 'Sin After Sin', 1978's 'Stained Class' and 'Hell Bent for Leather', and1979's 'Unleashed in the East', which spawned such metal anthems as 'Sinner', 'Diamonds and Rust', 'Hell Bent for Leather', and 'The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)'. Also, Priest were one of the first metal bands to exclusively wear leather and studs–a look that began during this era and would eventually be embraced by metal heads throughout the world.

Additionally in 2022, Priestband members Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill and Scott Travis will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

No doubt, Priest will continue to storm their way across the globe spreading their special brand of heavy metal throughout!

Judas Priest Celebrate 50th Anniversary

JUDAS PRIEST Announces Official Dates For ’50 Heavy Metal Years’ Tour

One of heavy metal’s all-time greats, Judas Priest , will get the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary again this year with the launch of a new North American fall tour. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour will also feature Queensryche as openers and is being fueled by the highest charting album of Priest’s career, ‘Firepower,’ which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200.

Additionally in 2022, Priest band members Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill and Scott Travis will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Defending the heavy metal faith for fifty years, the Priest is back!” – Rob Halford

“Time to don the leather and studs and roll out the Priest Machine – celebrating our 50 Heavy Metal Years!!” – Glenn Tipton

“After the horrific last few years of restrictions we’ve all had to endure, what better place to break free, than the land of the free – the USA!” – Ian Hill

Judas Priest originally formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England (an area that many feel birthed heavy metal). The original nucleus of musicians would go on to change the face of heavy metal. Throughout the 70’s Priest were responsible for helping trail blaze metal with such classic offerings as ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’ (1976) ‘Sin After Sin’ (1977) and ‘Hell Bent for Leather’ (1978) as well as one of the genre’s top live recordings ‘Unleashed in the East’ (1979) among others.

It was during the 80’s that Priest conquered the world, becoming a global arena headliner on the strength of such all-time classics as ‘British Steel’ (1980) and ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ (1982), as well as being one of the first metal bands to be embraced by the then-burgeoning MTV, plus performing at some of the decades biggest concerts (1980’s Monsters of Rock, 1983’s US Festival, and 1985’s Live Aid) and being the first to exclusively wear leather and studs – a look that began during this era and would eventually be embraced by metal heads throughout the world. Priest’s success continued throughout the 90’s and beyond with the addition of drummer Scott Travis, as evidenced by such additional stellar offerings as ‘Painkiller’ (1990) ‘Angel of Retribution’ (2005) and ‘A Touch of Evil: Live’ (2009) the latter of which saw Priest win a Grammy Award for a killer rendition of the classic ‘Dissident Aggressor’.

In 2011 new guitarist Richie Faulkner came in to replace the previous guitarist who had left in 2010 – the move seemed to have reinvigorated the band, as evidenced by a show-stealing performance on the ‘American Idol’ TV program that also served as Faulkner’s debut performance with the band (also in 2011 was the release of a new compilation ‘The Chosen Few’ which included Priest classics selected by some of metal’s biggest names) and the ‘Epitaph’ concert DVD in 2013.

Priest’s next studio effort would arrive in 2014 ‘Redeemer of Souls’ which was supported by another strong tour. In 2018, Priest unleashed their latest studio album ‘Firepower’ (produced by Andy Sneap and Tom Allom) which received global success and critical acclaim. In 2020, a fully official and authorized photographic book, ‘Judas Priest: 50 Heavy Metal Years,’ was issued, followed in 2021 by the 42-CD box set, ‘Judas Priest: 50 Heavy Metal Years of Music.’

Few rock or metal acts remain as much of a must-see live attraction as Judas Priest.

Yeah!! Unleashed in the Midwest and hell bent for leather, Judas Priest are here to run you down!! The forebears of what is most commonly understood to be pure heavy metal, Priest fought an uphill battle from the cast-iron prison of Birmingham, England to become perhaps the most respected band in the genre and the catalyst for the hugely influential New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

While Judas Priest are more popularly associated with the metal movement of the '80s, the roots of the band reach all the way back to 1968. Several changes in membership, as well as inconsistent management and production contributed to a slow ascent to their rightful seat in the metal throne. But all that time spent struggling in obscurity paid off as they stormed into the following decade with a secure line-up, delivering a string of monumental albums and radio-staple singles.

By the middle of the 1980s, Priest was still steaming ahead, and had augmented their arsenal with some keyboard textures in a bid for more mainstream appeal. Though their most recent release had been widely derided by critics (a classification most metal bands were no doubt accustomed to by 1986), Priest still logged another entry into the rock radio rotation of eternity with "Turbo Lover", and the tour that followed proved to be one of their most successful. The incomparable experience of a concert queue was even documented during their Maryland appearance in the short film Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

King Biscuit beat the filmmakers to the punch a week or so prior, however, capturing the audio for this blistering set in Kansas City. All the highway-stinking, leather-chafing hits are here, including "The Sentinel", "Living After Midnight", and even a nod to their British blues origins with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Green Manalishi." For a lesson in all things fast and heavy, look no further.

Judas Priest Announce Deluxe Reissue of 1986 Album, ‘Turbo’

By Ryan Reed

Judas Priest will release a remastered deluxe version of their 10th LP, 1986’s Turbo , on February 3rd via Sony Music. The reissue, available as a 3-CD set and 150-gram vinyl LP, compiles the original album along with a two-disc concert, “Live in Kansas City,” documenting their “Fuel for Life” tour.

“The Eighties is considered to have been the best decade for heavy metal – Judas Priest roared through it and at the half way point went into unchartered territory with Turbo,” the band said in a statement.

“Always believing that metal should have no boundaries, Priest challenged themselves taking on board new technical inventions to create fresh ideas and push their sound forward. The combined songs show another side of Priest’s range of creativity that captures a theme and energy infused with the over the top sensibilities of that era. The ‘Fuel For Life’ tour certainly encapsulated the decadence of the times!”

Turbo  spawned singles like “Locked In” and “Turbo Lover.” The record was a stylistic turning point for the metal band, implementing guitar-synthesizers and shifting away from fantasy-based lyrics toward personal subject matter. The album reached Number 17 on the Billboard 200.

“If we’d shut off every possibility we wouldn’t have been as adventurous,” singer Rob Halford told Classic Rock Magazine in 2012 (via  Ultimate Classic Rock ), reflecting on that controversial era. “The truth is, we’ve never believed in rules.”

Judas Priest to Release Remastered 30th Anniversary Edition of ‘Turbo’

Can you believe it’s been 30 years since Judas Priest released Turbo ? To celebrate the hallmark, the metal gods have put together a 3-CD reissue featuring a 1986 live recording at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.

Turbo is album No. 10 from Judas Priest, opening up with the fan favorite “Turbo Lover.” For this reissue, the entire album has been remastered for both CD and vinyl. Coming out via Sony Music, the 30th anniversary edition of Turbo will become available on Feb. 3.

Discs Two and Three feature a 20-song live show from Judas Priest. Plenty of Turbo material will grace the discs, along with live versions of all-time classics like “Hell Bent For Leather,” “Victim of Changes” and “The Hellion / Electric Eye.”

Judas Priest reminisce, “The 80’s is considered to have been the best decade for heavy metal – Judas Priest roared through it and at the half way point went into unchartered territory with Turbo .  Always believing that metal should have no boundaries, Priest challenged themselves taking on board new technical inventions to create fresh ideas and push their sound forward.  The combined songs show another side of Priest’s range of creativity that captures a theme and energy infused with the over the top sensibilities of that era. The ‘Fuel For Life’ tour certainly encapsulated the decadence of the times! Turbo remastered and accompanied by a pedal to the metal live recording from Kansas reveals Priest on high octane – Raising fists and devil horns to the next level.”

The ruckus made in recent years about JUDAS PRIEST attempting a controversial metal opera with "Nostradamus" can be used as a frame of reference if you weren't there for the controversy "Turbo" created for the band in 1986. The album was hung upon PRIEST as an indictment by "pure" headbangers in the same way "Load" would be upon METALLICA a decade later. "Turbo" was met by mainstream listeners with an ingratiating thumbs-up, as was MOTLEY CRUE 's "Girls, Girls, Girls" and DEF LEPPARD 's "Hysteria" , other albums by hard rock giants who took softer, more commercial stances in the same timeframe and found their way to riches. To less profitable degrees, it's the same soft-soap stumblebum as ALCATRAZZ 's "Dangerous Games" and TYGERS OF PAN TANG 's "The Wreck-Age" .

You could see the awkward social changes in American high schools of the day; those who persecuted metalheads were suddenly currying their favor. These new fans (i.e. interlopers) were now strapping on MOTLEY and PRIEST T-shirts, where once TEARS FOR FEARS and THE FIXX had draped. If you're a sharp observer, and more a fan of "Point Of Entry" versus "Turbo" , you get the in-joke dropped into the metal-schlock movie "Trick Or Treat" , also from 1986. It's that scene when the beautiful straight girl Leslie, the metalhead's connotation of the phrase meaning normal kids or preppies, comes up to Roger at the Halloween dance and tries to look metal-cool by asking him, "Judas?" Groan. All part of the weird syndrome to find a happy medium between mainstream and subculture. Oddly enough, Roger himself hardly passes off as metal, though his expertise rings true thanks to a savvy script writer.

Why "Turbo" was such a shock to the system is easily gauged by the albums preceding it, "Screaming For Vengeance" and "Defenders Of The Faith" . "You've Got Another Thing Coming" could be viewed as JUDAS PRIEST 's first step into the mainstream as the band's future calling card single. Today it's interesting to see it, along with "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight" , infiltrate the playlists of FM classic rock radio. In 1986, JUDAS PRIEST , along with many of the high profile heavy metal hitters, was all but forced at gunpoint to lighten its tones and slick up its songwriting. Hit generation and album sales meant more than artistic statements in this period of the genre — if you wanted a tour-intensive label signing. Heavy metal had become big business, and even thrash acts who rose during the mid-'80s under the rallying cry against "false metal" were, themselves, later victims of change like PRIEST on the vilified album "Turbo" .

This was a period in heavy metal history where even IRON MAIDEN was thrown under the microscope by the faithful for tweaking its music with guitar synthesizers on "Somewhere in Time" and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" . Argue for or against those albums all you like: they were hardly guilty of the unforeseen taming down on "Turbo" . Even JUDAS PRIEST 's image went through an agonizing wringer for this album, swinging from a tough leather-clad pack to a horrific, poofed-up pageant, a metal Moulin Rouge, if you will.

"Turbo Lover" charged onto MTV and "Headbangers Ball" , which had already been playing the tar out of "Love Bites" and "Freewheel Burning" from "Defenders Of The Faith" . The latter were righteous JUDAS PRIEST beasts chased off to the new-order cybernetic shrill of "Tron" -inspired motorcycles. Like Tom Petty did to much better effect in the "You Got Lucky" video, the "Locked In" clip tried to make use of the apocalyptic wasteland scrummed over by Mad Max as a would-be takeover zone for punks and metal freaks. Did you catch that in-joke inside the hella-cool "Fury Road" film? Later, JUDAS PRIEST took a simpler approach by filming the band onstage during the "Fuel for Life" tour; summoning Gen X teens as purportedly unified with the authority-rebuking "Parental Guidance" video.

The problem was, the message carried less staunch than the content, since "Parental Guidance" was being sung by the Jordache brigade instead of the shredded-up Levi's crew. Some longtime JUDAS PRIEST fans simply accepted this maddening pop carnival. However, a large percentage ran straight to MEGADETH , a band that was boisterously expressing the outrage most metalheads felt in 1986. "Rock You All Around The World" , "Reckless" and "Hot For Love" were as close to true PRIEST as could be found on "Turbo" . The future looked bleak until "Ram it Down" heavied-it-up, as if in apology for this blatant cashing in.

Coming to "Turbo" thirty years later, the album doesn't stand the test of time. It's as dated and flawed as KISS 's "Crazy Nights" : both contain a few bouncing singles, a couple of genuine shakers and a lot of filler. For history sake, Sony's thirtieth anniversary edition of "Turbo" gives newer audiences a look upon JUDAS PRIEST 's most successful outing. As stricken as the band was to come up with surefire hits like "Turbo Lover" and "Locked In" , neither track finds much play anywhere today. Consider the irony in that PRIEST 's venture into power pop nearly spelled career suicide.

There is a goofy attraction to " "Turbo Lover" with Ian Hill 's one-dimensional bass hum and the faux-hydraulic screeches that give Rob Halford 's sultry panting a genuine pump. By the time K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton start asserting their guitars past the synthesizers and Terminator robot gnashing behind the corny choruses, the song does kick as much as it's God-awful. "Locked In" carries enough of a strut to hang with, despite the twittering keys spewing a horror show over what could've been a rocking, sweet jam.

When the clumsy disco rocker "Private Property" hits, "Turbo" feels like a point of no return. It's the answer to Alice Cooper 's "Constrictor" album, which had turned the Prince of Darkness's career around the same year. Ian Hill 's near-mindless bass line does keep "Private Property" on course as Dave Holland 's equally numbed rhythm is gobbled by synths and clapping drum machines.

"Out In The Cold" strives for invention, considering John Carpenter and Alan Howarth had turned synthesizers into the epitome of cool behind their horror and hard sci-fi film scores. The intro to "Out In The Cold" is a disaster with the poorly mixed, arrhythmic drop of Dave Holland 's slow drum patters amidst the aloof keys. The song itself grows a little muscle on the heels of power chords as it shambles along its synth-baked quagmire.

"Turbo" is essentially a convulsive by-product of its times, an album filled with anthems— "Rock You All Around The World" , "Parental Guidance" and "Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days" — and lovesick rock pleas common to the times. With the rear two songs "Hot For Love" and "Reckless" at least making an attempt to amp up, seldom few will care. "Reckless" has some balls and far less festering synth action. K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton cut loose here, alleluia. Give that one a chance to win you over, at least.

This three-album edition of "Turbo" comes with a live recording from the '86 "Fuel for Life" tour, recorded at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City. This 20-song set offers a few more than what's delivered on 1987's hot-selling, if so-so "Priest…Live!" , which was recorded at the Omni in Atlanta and Reunion Arena in Dallas. Here you get "Desert Plains" , " "Victim Of Changes" , and "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown) " . You even get "Locked In" , which was surprisingly omitted from "Priest…Live!" even on the 2001 remaster.

We all knew this anniversary edition was coming, given all the other celebration packages preceding it. The two live discs compensate greatly, but at the end of the day, "Turbo" remains the inarguable misfire from a heavy metal juggernaut who must stand accountable for it yet again. "Turbo" was designed to soundboard the huffing excitability of The Big Eighties, particularly our growing obsession with cybernetics. The saturation of keys on the album was supposed to take JUDAS PRIEST into the future along with the rest of us, but alas, it came to a splintery thud like the bad end of a light cycle duel. If you're buying the 150-gram-vinyl version containing only the presentation of "Turbo" , you're a completist beyond completists.

Recent tour reviews

1986, 1988, 2005, 2011, 2019. These are the years I seen the mighty Judas Priest and they continue to rock after all these years. They have changed their set list every time I seen them and glad I made it to the concert(s). Rob Halford is still hitting those high notes which is amazing since is getting up there in years. This is the first time not seeing Glenn Tipton in the band. His Parkinson's disease has really affected his playing, as he didn't come out for the encore songs.

If you are trying to decide to go at the last minute to see JP, just go. Don't procrastinate. Go, now. Get your ticket. Enjoy the show.

Halford and crew delivered the goods. New set list for 2019 including awesome deep cuts like Take These Chains and a few brand new cuts from Firepower - the greatest metal album since the 80s (and better than most of those)! This is a MUST SEE concert for any true metal fan. Incredible show! Band should have moved around the stage a little more - Rob sure did. Sure wish Glenn could have come out to say Hi even if he can’t play. These guys are true legends. Great show. Bring the next generation with you. @gilbilly88

Judas Priest never fails to impress and entertain. This was my 25th Priest concert and this one, like all the ones before, blew me away. I am very sorry I didn't get to see Glenn Tipton perform, but Andy Sneap filled in just nicely, like he has been on stage with them since the beginning. Rob.. what can I say about Rob that true fans don't already know? The man still has it! Such an exquisite and strong voice.. gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. No one, NO ONE will ever come close to outperforming, outplaying, out-singing, and outscreaming Judas Priest and THE METAL GOD . I look forward to my 26th show. Metal GODS! They are, after all...
