How to Use the Milan Metro: Quick & Easy Guide for First-Timers

How to Use the Milan Metro: Quick & Easy Guide for First-Timers

Last Updated on March 12, 2024 by Michela

From the Duomo di Milano to the quirky neighborhood of Navigli, or cosmopolitan Piazza Gae Aulenti to a soccer game at San Siro, the metro in Milan is one of the most convenient ways to get around. But, it can easily be confusing to navigate a city entirely new to you, plus making sure you use your time to the fullest. That’s why this quick & easy guide to using the Milan Metro will have you riding the subway like a true Milanese as soon as you arrive.

Whether you’re traveling to Milan for the first time or on a budget, or you’re a new expat in Italy trying to get the hang of local life, this guide is designed to make you as prepared as possible so you’re as confident as can be on the metro in Milan.

About The Milan Metro System

milan train travel card

The Metropolitana, or metro, which is the underground subway of Milan, is operated by the Azienda Trasporti Milanesi . The company operates all Milan public transport in and around the city.

There are five Milan metro lines, all color-coded:

  • M1 Red line : From Sesto San Giovanni to Bisceglie and Rho Fieramilano (the line splits.) Major stops include Duomo and Cadorna FN.
  • M2 Green line : From Gessate and Cologno Nord to Assago Milanofiori Forum and Abbiategrasso. Major stops include Lambrate FS (train station), Centrale FS (main train station), Garibaldi FS (train station), Porta Genova (Navigli area).
  • M3 Yellow line : From Comasina to San Donato. Major stops include Centrale FS and Duomo.
  • M4 Blue line – New! : This new metro line connects Milan Linate Airport to the city center.
  • M5 Lilac line : From Bignami to San Siro Stadio. Major stops include San Siro Stadium and Garibaldi FS.

Good to know : Note that some lines split to take you in different directions , like the M1. You have to pay attention not only that you’re taking the tram going towards the right place but that you’re taking the right split.

At its core, the Milan Metro is not a complicated transportation system. But when you’re standing at the station in person, squinting to find your stop on the map, taking a turn down the wrong corridor, you’re wishing you had read up on the fundamentals of the metro system!

Pro Tip: Check the metro status of any of the five lines on the ATM official website .

Why You Should Use the Metro in Milan

I love to acknowledge and spread the word about walkable cities that are easy to explore and get the most out of on foot. Milan however is no such city.

Milan is huge – and it’s made up of a bunch of unique neighborhoods you would never come across unless you tired yourself out walking for hours on end.

It is also one of the cheapest ways to get around the city, perfect for budget travelers.

It’s Convenient & Fast

The metro is one of the most convenient ways to get around Milan because it is quick and efficient. Since it’s underground, it constantly keeps moving. There are no people, other vehicles, or intersections interrupting or delaying the system.

This is why the metro is ideal if you only have one day in Milan to explore and are trying to see as much of the city as possible on your busy northern Italy itinerary .

It’s Budget-Friendly

Starting at €2.20 for a one-way ticket, the metro is one of the cheapest ways to get around the city. It can be the perfect compromise for budget-friendly travelers trying to see a lot while saving money.

Good to know: You can also use your ticket on the more aesthetic (but not as fast) transportation, trams. Some trams are classic trolley cars which make them a cute way to get around, just not as convenient.

You Get a Glimpse at Local Life

Tourists are less likely to take the metro just because of how confusing and intimidating it can be. This means you’ll mostly be traveling alongside residents, which offers some fun (and interesting) insight into the Milanese way of life.

Keep in mind the city is one of the most multicultural in Italy, so you’ll also see hear many languages and see many foreigners that call Milan home.

Increases Your Confidence as a Traveler

This may be the most metaphorical and figurative reason to use the subway in Milan but it’s still important. Getting to know and successfully getting around a new city using the subway is a challenge!

So if you manage to do it, you gain confidence as a traveler, especially while traveling solo.

Metro Stations

milan train travel card

Milan Metro stations are dotted all throughout the city. While the sign is large, the chaos and bustle of the metropolis can lead you to miss it!

When looking for a metro station, look for a tall sign with a bold red M on it . It is located next to stairs or, sometimes, escalators that lead you to the underground transportation.

Once you understand which line you have to take, you’ll understand which station you need to enter. There are overhead signs as you descend the stairs or escalator that indicate which lines service that station.

I wouldn’t say anyone’s traveling on the subway for the amenities, but I want you to leave this post knowing everything there is to know about the subway that could be of use to you.

As far as amenities go, nearly all stations have vending machines with food and drink. Many stations also have an “edicola” (newspaper stand) that sells newspapers, magazines and items like small snacks and water.

I haven’t been in every single subway station, but I have never seen a restroom facility. However, I discovered that many stations do in fact have bathrooms. They are not indicated on the maps you’ll find in the metro (which is why I didn’t know they existed), but you can find all the stations with a bathroom on this map .

Accessibility

Milan’s metro stations that are accessible for those traveling with wheelchairs or handicaps are indicated on the metro map by a blue handicap symbol or a white handicap symbol .

The blue symbol means there are elevators in the station, whereas the white symbol indicates that the station has stairlifts for those traveling in a wheelchair.

Read more about accessibility on the metro .

Buying a Milan Metro Ticket

There are several types of tickets for the metro in Milan, and important things to know about using them.

Where to Buy Tickets

milan train travel card

  • The machines are also convenient because you can input what language settings you prefer for the transaction process.
  • I honestly wouldn’t recommend purchasing tickets on the app because it’s just not as simple and easy as buying them directly at the station. What is nice is that the app provides a timer so you know exactly when your ticket is about to expire.
  • At bars, tabaccherie, and newspaper stands – If you prefer to buy the ticket from a person, most newspaper stands (edicola) and tobacco shops (tabaccheria) sell Milan public transport tickets. However, note that these places usually only take cash.
  • More convenient than paying on the app but still not as simple as buying tickets at the ticket machines.
  • Good to know: The time frame of the ticket’s validity starts at the time of purchase with this method, not at the time you scan it on the turnstile.
  • You can print tickets purchased via SMS at the ticket machines in the station.
  • Pay contactless (New!) – You can now go right up to the turnstiles and tap your credit or debit card on the reader to start your journey. Just tap the same card on the exit turnstiles to have a completely contactless metro ride. You can also use Apple Pay and similar services as long as it is attached to a card. Find out more info .

Pro Tip: Even though paying at the ticket machines is my recommended method for buying your tickets, it is not uncommon that machines are out of order . That’s why it is good to know of these other options for purchasing your metro ticket.

Types of Milan Metro Tickets

milan train travel card

Here are the most common types of tickets available you’ll be using:

  • Single-use ticket : Valid for 90 minutes, meaning you can take as many rides as you want 90 minutes from stamping your ticket at the turnstiles. Costs €2.20 euros. For this ticket, you would select Ordinary 3 zones on the screen, as you see in the photo above.
  • Daily ticket : Unlimited rides on the metro, valid for 24 hours from the time it is first stamped.
  • 3 day ticket : Unlimited rides on the metro, valid for 72 hours from the time it is first stamped.
  • Book of 10 Tickets : Also called a Carnet 10 corsi, it is ticket that allows you 10 rides on the metro.
  • Milan City Pass : Also called the Milano Card, it is ideal for tourists who will frequently use public transportation. The travel card gives you unlimited access to all Milan transport for either 1, 2, or 3 days, as well as benefits like discounted rates on attractions restaurants and more. It’s also convenient because you can buy the Milano Card online . I encourage you, however, to do your own research to decide if this is the option for you, as others have expressed concerns about the value of the card.

Under other ATM tickets, you’ll find options for traveling to the outskirts of Milan. The symbols Mi1-Mi3 represent the innermost zones of the city.

The other options on the screen include io Viaggio Lombardia, which is a pass to use all public transportation throughout the region of Lombardy. Ticket for San Raffaele H means the ticket to reach the San Raffaele Hospital.

Pro Tip: Children up to 10 years old don’t need a ticket to ride the subway in Milan.

milan train travel card

Pro Tip: Your Milan metro ticket can be used on trams, buses, and the city’s characteristic trolley cars too!

Navigating the Platforms & Subway Lines

Turnstiles at Milan Metro station.

The Milan subway may only have a few lines but you can still easily be overwhelmed when entering a station, especially if it is busy.

Good to know: There are stickers on the ground and signs above that have the line and symbol (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) to help you know where you’re going.

To get down to the platforms, you will have to get past a set of turnstiles. Here you will insert and validate your ticket.

It will then be stamped with a time, which is the time you will reference for how long your ticket is valid for (90 minutes for single ticket, 24 hours for travel pass, etc.)

When you make your way down to the platform, it is not only important to double check you are going to the right line but also to the train moving in the right direction.

For example, the M3 line has subways that go north and subways that go south. All you have to do is locate on the map next to the stairs (before descending to the platform) if your stop is highlighted on the map. If it is not highlighted in the line’s color, that means you have to go to the other platform which is traveling in that direction.

The platforms can either be right across from each other or separated by the tracks.

Helpful Resources

Pro Tip: ATM at the Milan subway does not mean an ATM where you can withdraw money. It stands for the operating company’s name – Azienda Trasporti Milanesi!

ATM Points are info points where you can carry out a variety of tasks: get information, buy tickets or yearly passes, subscribe to BikeMi, Milan’s bike sharing service, etc. You’ll most likely use them to get more information and get directions in case you’ve ended up in the wrong spot.

ATM points are located in the following stations:

  • Duomo (M1 and M3)
  • Cadorna FN (M1 and M2)
  • Centrale FS (M2 and M3, Milan’s main train station)
  • Loreto (M1 and M2)
  • Garibaldi FS (M2 and M5)
  • Romolo (M2)

Another resource you can take advantage of is the ATM app, which can provide timely information like planned maintenance.

Entering, Exiting, and On the Metro

milan train travel card

A subway arrives typically every 2-8 minutes depending on the time of day. You can see exactly when it’s arriving once you’re on the platform. There are screens overhead that indicate how many minutes remain before the next subway arrives.

The interior of the metro is well-kept and you can sit or stand while holding onto the poles. It’s generally a smooth (but fast) ride, however, I still recommend holding onto something if you’re standing.

Once you’re on the metro, the systems make it very easy to know what stops are coming up next. Above the doors is typically a map of the stops on the metro line you can use for reference.

On newer metro trains, there are actually TVs that show you what the next stop is. And on top of that, a speaker calls out each stop in Italian and English – all you have to do is pay attention!

Whether you enter and exit on the right or left depends on the station , so it’s good to listen to the stop announcements to know which side you should prepare to exit from.

Pro Tip: Have a travel-sized hand sanitizer on hand. I’ve never seen hand sanitizer stands in the stations and the metro is a high contact place.

Most Popular Stops and Locations along the Milan Metro

milan train travel card

  • Stop: Duomo (M1 & M3)
  • Stop: Centrale (M2 & M3)
  • Stop: San Siro Stadio DAZN (M5)
  • Stop: Garibaldi (M2 & M5)
  • Stop: Porta Genova (M2)
  • Stop: Cairoli (M1)

Using the Metro Beyond the City Center

Airport transfer.

Curious about using the Milan Metro as an airport transfer? It depends on which airport you are trying to reach!

The M4 metro now directly connects Milan Linate airport with the city center.

The other metro lines won’t get you all the way to Milan Malpensa, but there are several ways you can use the metro for part of your journey.

When looking at the map, you’ll want to look at any of the stops with a plane symbol next to them.

Any symbol with a bus and plane means there are airport shuttle buses near that metro stop (that go to multiple airports like Linate, Malpensa, and even Milan Bergamo Airport.)

And finally if you see a train symbol with a plane symbol, that is the Malpensa Express, a train you can take you directly to Malpensa airport.

Reach Nearby Cities

The Milan Metro also operates alongside intercity railways, a convenient transportation option for taking local day trips from Milan . The suburban railways connect you to places like Lake Como , Pavia, and Chiasso.

These railways are accessible from these metro stations: Lancetti, Porta Garibaldi, Repubblica, Porta Venezia, Dateo, Porta Vittoria.

Connect to All of Italy

Meanwhile, if you are traveling more of Italy by train , you can use the metro to get to any of the train stations in Milan. Just check your train ticket to confirm the station and then look at the metro map to locate the correct stop. All the train stations connected to the metro have a train symbol next to them.

Metro stops that are also train stations have an FS written next to their name , but some of the main train stations are:

  • Milano Centrale
  • Porta Garibaldi
  • Porta Genova

Tips for Taking the Milan Metro

  • If you can, avoid using the metro during high-traffic times , like rush hour on weekdays. Or, as a more unique example, when AC Milan or Inter, the city’s soccer teams, have a game! (Personally experienced this chaos!) The ATM operator company actually has signs to encourage people to take the subway on off-times if they can because of how high-traffic peak times get.
  • Move quickly. Stops are brief and when the metro and platforms are full of people, it is important to stay sharp and quick exiting and entering the subway. (I literally saw someone get smushed by the doors one time – as you can imagine, it looked like it hurt. Don’t let that scare you – just reminding you to stay attentive and quick!)
  • Keep your ticket on hand. As I mentioned before, you must hang onto your ticket because you’ll need it to exit the subway station. It’s best to keep it close on hand so you don’t have to rummage through your things to find the small piece of paper.

Italian Words to Know for the Metro

You are almost a Milan metro pro! Most everything is translated to English on the metro, but it will still be helpful to know some key words.

Here are some Italian words to sharpen your vocabulary and really master the metro. (Side note: Italians call the metro, metro, so you shouldn’t have any translation issues there!)

  • Biglietto – Ticket
  • Binario – Platform
  • Uscita – Exit
  • Fermata – Stop
  • Nord – North
  • Sud – South
  • Ovest – West
  • Metropolitana – Subway (the full term)
  • Stazione Ferroviaria – Train station

The SGTD Take

The Milan Metro can be an intimidating place for first-time visitors. Although a lot of it is straightforward, the overwhelm of a new city and travel worries can get the best of us and easily knock us off our travel game!

That’s why I hope this guide to using the Milan Metro has helped shed some light and prepare you for your upcoming trip.

The metro is fast and convenient, and ultimately is the easiest way to see many places in Milan even in a short period, so I highly recommend you give the underground a try to make the most of your itinerary.

What’s on your Milan bucket list? Let me know in a comment!

Italy Trip Planning Resources

  • Accommodation : For Italy, I mainly use Booking.com to search and book places to stay.
  • Booking flights : I like to search for flights through Skyscanner , but I also book direct depending on the airline.
  • Activities & experiences : For things to do that require a ticket, and for more unique trip activities, I use Musement .
  • Road trip : For renting a car, I get the best prices by comparing companies with AutoEurope . I then use ViaMichelin to estimate road trip costs and Autostrade.it to find gas stations/have live updates on traffic.
  • Transportation : Traveling by public transportation is a great way to see Italy. I use Trenitalia or Trainline to book tickets for trains and Flixbus for long-haul bus trips.
  • Accessories : I always travel with this portable charger to stay connected and with a universal adapter to accommodate Italy’s plug types.

Milan Metro

Milan Metro

The Milan metro is made up of four lines and is the most extensive in Italy . Its construction was completed in the 1960s.

Despite the Milan Metro only having four lines and 111 stations , it's currently the longest metro line in Italy - measuring 58.7 miles - 94.5 km. It surpasses the metro in Rome , which only consists of three lines.

The Milan Metro is one of Europe’s most modern metro systems. Although the first projects to build a metro rail network were designed at the beginning of the twentieth century, it wasn’t until 1957 that the first metro line was set up. The Milan Metro was inaugurated nearly ten years later, in 1964.

The four metro lines in Milan are numbered and have various colors:

  • Line M1 (red): This line is useful, especially if you're traveling to Milan on business and want to reach the Fiera Milano. The line also stops at the Duomo and San Babila.
  • Line M2 (green): The M2 stops at Milano Centrale.
  • Line M3 (yellow): The M3 is probably the most convenient line for tourists. It stops at the Duomo , in Via Montenapoleone (the most important commercial area in Milan ) and Milano Centrale .
  • Line M5 (purple): The M5 is integrated with the regional trains. Visitors will find the following stops interesting: Garibaldi station and Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
  • The Milan Metro is currently working on the fifth line (blue line).

Note that if you're staying in the center of Milan, it's likely that you'll not need to take the metro except to go to the airport.

Where to purchase the metro tickets?

Milan metro tickets and travel cards can be purchased at  metro stations, kiosks, and off-licenses.

If you need to take the metro on a regular basis, we recommend buying various one-way tickets at a time or purchasing a travel card.

Schedule and frequency

The Milan metro runs every day from 6 am until 12:30 am (midnight) . On 25 December and 1 May, the metro opens from 7 am until 7:30 pm.

The frequency of the Milan Metro depends on the time of day, on the line, and the day of the week, but generally, the trains arrive every 2-4 minutes. Outside the city center, for example, at the last stops of the M2 line, trains run every 30 minutes.

Information on the various types of Milan metro tickets and travel cards can be found in the following article: Tickets and travel cards in Milan.

Public transport in Milan is quite efficient, is relatively cheap and runs until late. However if you are staying in the centre, it's most likely that you'll only use it to get to the airport.

The trams in Milan have been running since 1876, although at that time they were horse-drawn. Even today some of the trams in circulation are relics, more than 80 years old.

Getting Around Milan: Guide to Public Transportation

milan train travel card

Milan, Italy has a modern public transportation system that connects almost all areas of the city, as well as its airports, via a combination of subway lines, trams and buses. The city has five main  train  stations, four Metro (subway) lines, and an extensive tram network. There's also a suburban rail system that reaches the bedroom cities of Milan. Buses also ply the city, but are most useful for connecting areas outside the city center.

Visitors to Milan intent on sightseeing will be able to get just about anywhere they need to go by way of tram or Metro. Metro is the fastest option, but many travelers prefer trams, in part because they can see where they're going on the above-ground tram cars.

How to Use Public Transit in Milan

Milan's public transportation services are run by Azienda Trasporti Milanese , or ATM for short. The ATM website has an English-language component, system maps and a route finder tool that lets you chart the best path from points A to B. ATM has an app, ATM Milano Official App , available for smartphones or Apple, that allows you to buy tickets and travel passes and access the system map.

Here are some basic how-tos for using public transportation in Milan:

  • Milan has four subway lines, called Metropolitana (Metro for short) and identified by signs with a bold "M" and the background color representing the respective lines. The four lines are Line (linea) 1, the red line, Line 2, the green line, Line 3, the yellow line and Line 5, the purple (or lilac) line. Some of the suburban rail lines crisscross the city and are shown in blue on maps.
  • Fares are determined by zone, with a simple ticket covering zones Mi1 to Mi3, the core of Milan and where virtually all attractions, shopping areas, main train stations, and tourist hotels are located.
  • As of October 2020, tickets for Metro, trams, buses and suburban rail lines within zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €2 and are good for 90 minutes, including transfers.
  • One and 3-day passes good for unlimited rides in zones Mi1-Mi3 cost €7 and €12, respectively.
  • The Milano Card travel pass, priced at €11 for 24 hours, €17 for 48 hours or €19.5 for 72 hours, includes unlimited public transportation access plus free or deeply discounted access to several major museums and attractions.
  • Tickets can be purchased in Metro stations, at tabacchi (tobacco shops) and newsstands, or via the mobile app. Note that most tabacchi and newsstand vendors will only accept cash for tickets.
  • On Metro, you need either your ticket or QR code (if you're using the mobile app) to enter and exit the train platforms. On buses and trams, you need to stamp your ticket in one of the machines when you board the vehicle.
  • The Metro system is largely accessible to wheelchair users and the physically impaired, with escalators, elevators and in some stations, stairlifts to allow passengers to reach the trains. Modern trams are wheelchair accessible though some vintage models are not. For more information, see the ATM mobility page or Accessible Milan .

Public Transportation Hours of Operation

  • Metro runs Monday to Saturday from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. On Sundays and holidays, it opens at 6.00 a.m.
  • Trams operate from 4.30 a.m. to 2.30 a.m.
  • Buses operate from 5.30 a.m. to 1.45 a.m.
  • On Christmas Day and May 1 (Labor Day), all services run from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Getting from Milan's Airports to Central Milan

Milan's largest airport is Malpensa International, located northwest of the city. Malpensa can be reached by train using the Malpensa Express (MXP) from Centrale, Garibaldi or Cadorna stations. Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the airport or train station, or via the ATM mobile app.

Malpensa is also served by bus service to and from Milano Centrale. Malpensa Shuttle departs every 20 minutes. Shuttles also connect Malpensa to the smaller Linate Airport east of Milan.

Getting Around Milan

The majority of sights in Milan are within zones Mi1 and Mi2 and are therefore easily accessible via public transport. Here are the stops for some of Milan's most popular attractions .

  • The Castello Sforzesco is directly behind the Cairoli stop.
  • From the Porta Venezia station, one can easily visit the Museum of Science and Technology, situated in a former monastery.
  • The Conciliazione station, the first stop west of the Cadorna station, is near the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci's ''Last Supper'' can be viewed.
  • From the Duomo stop, one can stroll not only the Duomo but through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele to La Scala opera house.
  • To reach the popular Navigli neighborhood, head to the Porta Genova or Piazza P.za Ventiquattro Maggio stops.

Getting Out of Milan

Thanks to Milan's geographic position in Northern Italy, coupled with its extensive rail system , it's a convenient point of departure for exploring neighboring countries in Europe or for reaching the rest of Italy. EuroCity trains connect from Milano Centrale to Zurich, Geneva, Bern, and other Swiss cities, and Thello trains offer direct service to Paris' Gare de Lyon station. It's also possible to catch direct trains to Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Nice, France.

Within Italy, Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect to Venice , Bologna , Florence , Rome and a host of other cities.

Milan is the center of commerce and fashion and its train station reflects that, with its gorgeous architecture.

Milano Centrale Train Station

Milano Centrale is the main train station for this major northern Italian city. It was opened in the early 1930s, replacing an older and smaller station. The imposing design of the building’s facade was intended to showcase the dominance of then-Prime Minister Mussolini's fascist regime. It's the second-largest station in Italy, behind Roma Termini.

There are 24 tracks at Centrale, with a soaring glass and metal arched roof over the platforms. There is regular daily service to cities throughout Italy, as well as international destinations in other parts of Europe. Over 320,000 people passing through the station daily.

On the platform level of the station, there are a few shops and restaurants, as well as an information office. There is a Sala Freccia Club across from Track 21, for travelers with a Gold or Platinum CARTAFRECCIA card or an Executive or AV Salottino ticket, and a Sala Blu next to track four, for passengers with disabilities who need special assistance. There are restrooms next to Track 22.

The lowest level of the station has shops, restaurants, and an entry to the Milan Metro. On the mezzanine and upper levels there are more shops and restaurants. The ground level is where you'll find the large ticket office, the KiPoint left luggage facility, a post office, and most of the shops and restaurants in the station.

You can get to the Centrale Metro station without leaving the building, and just outside of the train station, you can catch several city bus and tram lines.

The Integrated Fare System (STIBM)

The system extends to all municipals within the City of Milan metropolitan area and the Province of Monza and Brianza.

The system uses the City of Milan as the reference point where surrounding areas have then been divided into circular sections each representing a fare zone.

The tickets and travel cards will be valid for use with the ATM transport network and suburban public transport lines operating within the Integrated Fare System (STIBM) area.

All the innovations of the The fare system

The fare system.

The The system uses the City of Milan as the reference point where surrounding areas were divided into circular sections , 5kms wide, each representing a fare zone were an identification code has been assigned.

The City of Milan has 21 municipalities bordering with it ( refer to the table below ) and the Rho Fieramilano station (Metro Line 1). This area corresponds to 3 fare zones and is identified by codes Mi1 - Mi3 .

The fare zones following Mi3 are categorised according to their distance from Milan, and can be identified by codes Mi4 to Mi9 ( refer to the table ). Each municipals’ stops and stations are assigned to a single fare zone.

Immagine mappa nuovo sistema tariffario integrato del bacino di mobilit&grave STIBM

3 zone travel tickets Mi1 - Mi3 allow you to travel:

  • Metro Lines 1, 3 and 5
  • Metro Line 2 from Assago Milanofiori Forum and P.za Abbiategrasso Chiesa Rossa to Cologno Nord and Cascina Burrona (inclusive)

In order to travel from Milan to the stations of Cernusco S. N., Villa Fiorita, Cassina de' Pecchi, Bussero (located in the Mi4 fare zone) a 4 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi4 ticket) is required; to stations of Villa Pompea, Gorgonzola, Cascina Antonietta (located in the Mi5 zone), a 5 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi5 ticket) is required; to Gessate (located in the Mi6 zone), a 6 zone travel ticket (Mi1 - Mi6 ticket) is required.

The tickets and travel cards will be valid for use with the ATM transport network, suburban public transport lines and Trenord rail lines operating within the Integrated Fare System (STIBM) area.

The Fares Calculation

The fare between two locations , i.e. the starting point and the destination of the journey, is calculated on the basis of the number of zones travelled (increasing in value with each additional zone travelled).

In Milan, the minimum fare that can be purchased is 3 fare zones (Mi1 - Mi3). In all other municipals of the System, the minimum fare that can be purchased is equal to 2 zones and costs the same as the minimum fare ticket price. This ticket also applies for journeys within the same municipal and between municipals belonging to the same fare zone. For each additional zone the cost of the ticket increases, therefore the 3 zone ticket costs €2.20, the 4 zone ticket €2.60 etc.

In order to travel to Milan, the following distinction has been made between tickets, weekly/monthly/annual travel cards:

  • for ordinary tickets, 10 trip tickets, daily tickets, 3 day tickets and weekly travel cards the minimum price that can be purchased is 3 zones (ordinary ticket price, €2.20); these tickets allow you to travel throughout the City of Milan and up to 21 municipalities within the Mi3 zone;
  • to travel in the municipal of Milan there are monthly and annual urban travel cards available. In order to travel between Milan and the 21 municipals in the Mi3 zone and between Milan and Rho Fieramilano station on the Metro Line 1, it’s necessary to purchase monthly and annual travel cards which are valid for 3 zones.

Traveling between Milan and the 21 Municipals of the Mi3 zone

For this type of journey, the fare purchased must include the Mi1 zone . If you travel between Milan and the 21 municipalities in the Mi3 zone or between Milan and the Rho Fieramilano station (Metro Line 1), you must purchase a fare from 3 Mi1-Mi3 zones (e.g. the ordinary ticket €2.00).

If you travel between Milan and the localities within the Mi4, Mi5, Mi6, Mi7, Mi8 and Mi9 zones you need to buy a fare from 4 to 9 zones or Mi1 - Mi4, Mi1 - Mi5, etc. up to Mi1 - Mi9.

For example:

  • from Milan (Mi1 zone) to Rho Fieramilano station (Metro line 1) (Mi3 zone) = 3 zone Mi1 - Mi3 fare
  • from Milan Loreto station (Metro Line 1, Mi1 zone) to Sesto San Giovanni (Mi3 zone) = 3 zone Mi1 - Mi3 fare
  • from Milan (Mi1 zone) to San Vittore Olona (Mi6 zone) = 6 zone Mi1 - Mi6 fare
  • from Trezzano sul Naviglio (Mi4 zone) to Milan (Mi1 zone) = 4 zone Mi1 - Mi4 fare

Traveling around the suburbs

In order to travel between suburban locations, a fare from 2 to 7 zones must be purchased, depending on the number of zones travelled.

  • from Monza (Mi4 zone) to Arcore (Mi5 zone) = 2 zone Mi4-Mi5 fare
  • from Gessate (zone Mi6) to Vimodrone (zone Mi3) = 4 zone Mi3-Mi6 fare

The minimum fare that can be purchased in the suburban area is 2 zones even if you travel between municipals located in the same fare zone or between stops located within the same municipal. Since there are no valid travel tickets in a single fare zone, it is necessary to purchase the one that includes the required zone and the previous zone or the next zone , for example:

  • 2 zones Mi3 - Mi4 fare
  • 2 zones Mi4 - Mi5 fare
  • 2 zones Mi6 - Mi7 fare
  • 2 zones Mi7 - Mi8 fare

If travelling between suburban locations, you cross Milan borders, it’s necessary to purchase the Mi1 fare zone; the fare is therefore equal to the fare zones included between Mi1 and the fare zone of the furthest location from Milan included in the journey, for example:

  • from Pero (Mi3 zone) to Gessate (Mi6 zone) = 6 zones Mi1 - Mi6 fare
  • from Monza (Mi4 zone) to Abbiategrasso (Mi7 zone) = 7 zones Mi1 - Mi7 fare

Warning : the fare between two locations may vary depending on the route of the lines used, for example:

  • from Assago (Mi3 zone) to Rozzano (Mi3 zone) using the 328 line = 2 zones Mi3 - Mi4 fare
  • from Assago (Mi3 zone) to Rozzano (Mi3 zone) using the metro Line 2 + tram 15 = 3 zones Mi1 - Mi3 fare

Ordinary tickets and travel cards

The following ordinary tickets are available with the The Fare System:

  • Ordinary ticket Mi1 - Mi3 : the time validity from the first validation varies with the number of zones purchased: 75 minutes for two zones + 15 minutes for each additional zone. In Milan, the minimum fare that can be purchased is 3 zones and is valid from the first validation for 90 minutes;
  • 10 trip tickets : only blocks of 10 tickets with time validity depending on the number of zones purchased. The trips cannot be used on road services managed by operators other than ATM and Trenord; it cannot be used by more than one person at the same time;

Milan Public Transport - Tickets and Travel cards

Milan is a vibrant city with several attractions and historical landmarks. Getting to these places is made easier with the Milan public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit or staying here for a longer duration, buying a ticket or travel pass is necessary to use the metro, trams, and buses provided for public transport. The tickets and travel passes are offered by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), the organization that manages public transport within Milan. ATM is owned by the Milan municipality (Comune di Milano) and through its subsidiaries, it even operates the Copenhagen underground.

What are the various available tickets/travel cards?

There is a wide variety of tickets and travel passes available. These passes/cards range from an ordinary ticket valid for 90 minutes up to an annual travel card of 1 year. Before going into further details about each available card type, we need to know about the fare zones in Milan. There are 8 fare zones roughly concentric in shape representing Milan and neighboring municipalities. With the urban zone representing the city center, other zones are named Mi3, Mi4, and so forth, up to Mi9. There is an increment in fare as we move further up the zones. To keep it simple, only Urban zone fares are discussed going forward. More details on the entire fare system are on this ATM webpage .

  • Ordinary ticket lasting 90 minutes from the time of first validation and costs 2.20€
  • Daily pass valid for 24 hours from first validation and costs 7.60€
  • 3-day pass valid for 3 consecutive days from the day of first validation up to the end of service on the third day. Costs 13€
  • Weekly travel card valid only from Monday to Sunday of the same week and costs 18.50€ (for the Mi1-Mi3 zone)
  • Monthly travel card valid for one calendar month and costs 39€
  • Annual travel card valid for 12 consecutive months and costs 330€

Which ticket/travel pass should I buy?

So this will be mainly based on the duration and how often one uses public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit of 1 day or a few hours, go with the ordinary ticket. If you plan on using public transport multiple times throughout the day, then the daily pass might be the better option.

For anything more than a day, a travel pass is worth your while. For a short trip of 2-3 days in Milan, a 3-day pass would work out best. As you can avoid buying the ordinary ticket multiple times due to its limited validity of 90 minutes. If the travel duration is slightly longer than 3 days, a weekly pass might be a good choice. Although, be aware that even if the weekly travel card is purchased mid-week, say on a Wednesday. It will only last up to the Sunday of the same week. Depending on the duration and day of the week, it is useful to decide between a 3-day pass and a weekly travel card.

On the other hand, if you are in Milan for more than 2 weeks, the monthly travel card works best. Likewise, for anything more than 9 months annual travel card is preferable. Although the fares for the monthly and annual travel cards might seem high, various concessions and subsidies are available. The discounts on travel cards in Milan are based on age and income. Children under the age of 14 are allowed to travel for free on public transport. For people under the age of 27, the monthly and annual travel card costs 22€ and 200€ respectively. Give this page a read if you want to know more about the reduced-rate travel card in Milan. It might be particularly useful if you are a student in Milan who uses public transport for your daily commute.

Why do I need a travel card?

The travel pass would save you the hassle of buying a ticket before every journey. It is convenient and allows you to travel at any time. The travel card gives you access to buses, trams, and the metro. As long as you are in the Urban zone and the travel card is purchased for the same zone, it can also be used for accessing suburban railways. Also (mainly 😄), since public transport in Milan is not free. Although in all seriousness, transportation costs in Milan are comparable or slightly lower than its counterparts like other major cities around Europe.

How do I get a travel card?

Travel cards are charged to an electronic card. The electronic card can be obtained from ATM points, newsstands, tobacconists (Tabacchi), and bars. ATM points are designated offices within the subway stations and help carry out most operations. They are currently in the metro stops - Duomo, Centrale, Cadorna, Loreto, Garibaldi, Romolo, and Zara. Advice would be to book an appointment beforehand through the ATM app at any of these ATM points closest to you. The Electronic card is issued after filling in the Card Request Form along with a passport photo and valid ID proof. At ATM points, electronic cards are handed in immediately while there is a waiting time (around 2 weeks) if submitted through other outlets. The electronic card is valid for 4 years and costs 10€.

The electronic card obtained is empty to start with and will have to be charged based on your travel plan of choice like monthly or annual. The charging of electronic travel cards in Milan is through ATM points, automatic ticket machines at the stations, and other outlets like newsstands and tobacconists. Do not forget to validate your ticket before the start of your journey. Without stamping, tickets are considered invalid and could lead to fines. Likewise, travel cards are validated through the totem poles that are present in every station before using them the first time of their recharged plan. In case the electronic card is lost or stolen, a new card will be issued for a charge of 15€, and upon presenting a valid ID document.

Now that you know of various available tickets and travel cards for using Milan’s public transport, I hope it makes your planning and commutes much easy. If you are in Milan for a short visit then purchasing a single ticket or daily pass is a good choice. However, buying individual tickets each time you wish to travel becomes an inconvenience over long periods. Furthermore, having a travel card will be a better option economically for frequent users.
