5 Incredible Things To Do In Hangzhou In One Day | Shanghai Day Trips

Things To Do In Hangzhou China

As we were based in Shanghai for two months, we really wanted to explore some of the surrounding areas in China. Being only one hour away from Shanghai by fast train, Hangzhou jumped straight to the top of our list of Shanghai day trips. Honestly, Hangzhou is worthy of much more than one day. But even in one day in Hangzhou, we hiked through tea fields, visited a Buddhist temple, explored the breathtaking West Lake and wandered down historic streets over 800 years old. So here are the best things to do in Hangzhou, China, and everything you need to know before you visit this extraordinary place.

One Day In Hangzhou Video

The best things to do in hangzhou, china, how to get to hangzhou from shanghai, how to get around hangzhou, is one day in hangzhou long enough, is hangzhou worth visiting.

Hiking Hangzhou Tea Fields

New Harvest Longjing Tea

When most people think of Hangzhou they think of West Lake. As an avid tea drinker, when I think of Hangzhou, I think of tea fields. Once I realised Hangzhou was where they grew the renowned green tea, Longjing Tea (Dragon Well Tea), seeing the Hangzhou tea fields immediately became my priority for our day trip to Hangzhou.

There’s just something about seeing where something you have daily comes from and the process of creating it. And for all those non-tea drinkers out there, not to worry, because the tea fields also happen to be some of the most spectacular scenery we have ever seen.

The two main tea fields in Hangzhou are located in Longjing Village and Meijiawu Village. We started in Meijiawu Village, explored the Meijiawu tea plantations, and then began our hike through the tea fields to reach Longjing Village. If you have the time, this was one of the most unforgettable experiences. We were also lucky that we happened to be there during picking season (late March and early April). We could see all the people out picking the tea and hear the rustling of conversations floating off the leaves. The tea plantations had really come alive.

If you don’t have time to do the walk between the two villages, we would definitely recommend at least visiting Meijiawu village. This was our favourite area between the two villages, as it seemed more authentic and had a nice mix of things to see and do. Here you can see the tea fields, you can take short walks through the tea plantations from the main road and you can also wander through the village and find a tea shop to try the tea.

How To Get To Meijiawu Village |  We took a taxi, although this took some time to get and we ended up having some lovely hotel staff help us arrange it. If you can access DiDi in China, this would be the easiest way. Otherwise, you can take the tourist bus Y4 to Meijiawu Village or Y3 to Longjing Village.

Lingyin Temple And Feilai Peak

Temple Grounds At Lingyin Temple

Originally built in 326AD by an Indian monk, Huili, Lingyin Temple is a Buddhist temple and monastery. When translated, Lingyin Temple means ‘temple of the soul’s retreat’. It is fittingly nestled in a peaceful forest within the Wulin mountains which easily allows you to forget you are in a major city. The Lingyin Temple area is made up of many buildings that you will discover as you walk uphill. You will see grand statues, incredible architecture and a peaceful bamboo forest. There is something so calming about wandering through this area.

Feilai Peak Buddhist Carvings Hangzhou

Before you reach Lingyin Temple, you will also see Feilai Peak (also known as ‘Peak Flown From Afar’). This is an area where there are hundreds of Buddhist carvings in the rocks, with rivers flowing below them. It’s really beautiful walking around this area and seeing the incredible Buddhist carvings. You can also visit Taoguang Temple and Yongfu Temple whilst you are here. We explored Yongfu temple and this area was also beautiful to walk around.

Lingyin Temple

Entrance Fee |  45 RMB for Feilai Peak and 30 RMB for Lingyin Temple. You need to enter Feilai Peak to enter Lingyin Temple.

Opening Hours | 7 AM to 6 PM every day

How To Get To Lingyin Temple |  Tourist buses Y1 and Y2 can take you to Lingyin Temple.

West Lake (Xi Hu)

West Lake Hangzhou China

Hangzhou and West Lake are synonymous, you can’t see one without seeing the other. West Lake is an incredible, massive freshwater lake in Hangzhou with mountains on three sides. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We didn’t walk the entire way around but would have loved to if we had more time. There are 10 different scenic spots around the lake that you can discover. You will also see pagodas and temples, bridges and islands, there are boats you can hire and so much more you can see. The views are spectacular and walking around the gardens is like jumping into an artwork.

Bai Causeway Hangzhou China

We explored about four of the ten scenic sites and they were all magical. We walked along part of Su Causeway , explored the Lotus Pool area and then took a bridge out to an island and walked along the Bai Causeway and the Broken Bridge back into the city. The Lotus Pool area was absolutely stunning with beautiful gardens and bridges everywhere. Whether you hire a bicycle, jump on a boat, or simply walk around West Lake, it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Hangzhou.

There is also a light show on the lake in the evening, Impression West Lake , where you can see beautiful lights, music and dancers produced by director Zhang Yimou. More places to see around West Lake include Baochu Pagoda and Leifeng Pagoda . With so much to see and so much beauty, it doesn’t take long to realise why West Lake is one of the best attractions in Hangzhou.

How To Get To West Lake |  West Lake is massive, so it really depends on which part of West Lake you want to arrive at. Longxiangqiao is the closest metro station to West Lake on Metro Line 1. You can also get tourist buses Y1 and Y2 to West Lake.

Hefang Street

Hefang Street Hangzhou China

Hefang Street, also known as Qinghefang Street, is an ancient street in Hangzhou which dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty over 800 years ago. Today it is a pedestrian shopping street where you can see ancient buildings and traditional shops like old Chinese medicine halls, tea houses and places selling Chinese crafts and Hangzhou snacks. You can also explore famous pharmacist Hu Xueyan’s Former Residence . We loved exploring Hefang Street in the evening, it was busy with people, lights were on, and there was a great atmosphere. Definitely one of the best things to do in Hangzhou at night.

How To Get To Hefang Street | Metro Line 1 to Ding’an. It is also near West Lake so if you are nearby you can walk.

Gongchen Bridge And The Grand Canal

Gongchen Bridge was originally built in the Ming Dynasty and is over 400 years old. It is the largest stone arch bridge in Hangzhou and crosses the grand canal. Located in the Gongshu district , there are many other great things to see in this area, including historic streets such as Qiaoxi Street and the Xiaohe historic block as well as exploring Banshan National Forest Park . Unfortunately, we didn’t get time to explore this area but it’s definitely something we would love to go back and do.

So if you’re visiting Hangzhou for one day only, make sure to prioritise what to do as there are so many incredible things to see and do. Better yet, if you have more time, make sure to stay a few nights.

How To Get To Gongchen Bridge |  Water bus from Wulinmen Pier (near Wulin Square) to Gongchen Bridge Pier.

How To Get From Shanghai To Hangzhou China

Hangzhou makes for a great day trip from Shanghai as it can be easily reached by a bullet train. Most fast trains to Hangzhou leave from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and the journey takes around 1 hour.

We booked our tickets online through trip.com the day before to make sure we had seats and the time we wanted. You just need to make sure you leave time to pick up your tickets when you get to the train station and go through security. We also booked our return ticket back to Shanghai for later in the evening so we could still maximise the day but also not need to line up for tickets at the train station, which can sometimes take up to an hour, as we experienced in Suzhou .

You can get around Hangzhou by walking, taxi, metro or bus. You can also hire a bicycle to get around. We walked around parts of West Lake and the city, but then also got a taxi out to the tea fields, two buses from there to Lingyin Temple and a taxi back into West Lake. The metro system is also good, although it will not get you to all Hangzhou sites.

It will make things easier if you have the internet on your phone so you can check how to get where throughout the day. Although Google maps can at times fail you in China, we used it to find directions during our Hangzhou day trip. It helped us to know which buses to get on and what direction to walk. You can also try Baidu Maps, Apple Maps or Maps.me.

It also helps to know that buses with a Y in front of them are tourist buses that take you to the main sites. Y1 takes you to West Lake and Y2 takes you to Lingyin Temple.

Finding an available taxi can be quite hard depending on where you are in Hangzhou. You can also use DiDi, however, we were unable to get this working without a Chinese bank account.

Temple Architecture Hangzhou

We visited Hangzhou as a day trip from Shanghai, as we were based in Shanghai for a couple of months. Although we were able to see and do a lot in Hangzhou in one day, we definitely would have preferred to have longer. If one day is all you have, then we would definitely still recommend visiting Hangzhou. But if you have the time, 48 hours in Hangzhou would give you enough time to see see the tea fields and the main sights. Better yet, spend a few nights to a week to really explore Hangzhou.

Lingyin temple Architecture

Honestly, Hangzhou is such an incredible destination with so many interesting places to visit. It was once the capital of China, and you can still explore historical attractions today. We would travel to Hangzhou just to explore West Lake, or just to hike the tea fields. Hangzhou is not only worth visiting but may even become a highlight of your trip to China.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Hangzhou?

Blossoms at West Lake Hangzhou

Hangzhou is definitely a year-round destination. However, the most pleasant times to visit Hangzhou would be in the Spring and Autumn. We went in Spring and would definitely recommend this time. If possible, try to avoid weekends and national holidays as these times will be much busier.

How to Plan a Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou Tour

There are three pearls in the Yangtze River Delta: Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. People may know about Shanghai because of the modern skyscrapers and old cultural buildings but may not know about Hangzhou and Suzhou - two beautiful cities that aren't very far from Shanghai.

With the rapid development of high-speed railway, people can reach Hangzhou and Suzhou from Shanghai within an hour and it is possible to visit the three cities within a limited amount of time.

Here is a guide about how to plan a tour from Shanghai to Hangzhou and Suzhou, including necessary information and a 5-day tour plan.

Highlights of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou

Shanghai is a city that combines modernity with tradition. Visit the Bund and you will feel like you are walking along the streets of Shanghai in the 1920s. You can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the city from the Shanghai Tower or spend some leisurely time in a traditional garden.

Check out the top things to do in Shanghai .

Hangzhou is a charming city with well-preserved natural and cultural scenery. The most famous attraction in Hangzhou is West Lake . Enjoying a boat ride on the lake is quite a relaxing and scenic experience. Also, visit Lingyin Temple to make a wish for your family.

Suzhou is famous for its traditional gardens and water towns, which have an idyllic atmosphere and beautiful Chinese architecture. Take a rickshaw ride alongside the ancient canal to admire the ancient buildings and streets.

See the top gardens in Suzhou .

Travel Between Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou by Train

As the three cities are close to each other, the best way to get around is by train.

Shanghai is the transportation hub of the three cities as there are two international airports connecting major cities in the world. Every day, over 200 bullet, or high-speed, trains depart from Shanghai to Hangzhou and Suzhou.

There are also over 30 direct trains between Hangzhou and Suzhou, which go through Shanghai.

Shanghai Airports and Railway Stations

In Shanghai, there are two international airports: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (IATA: SHA) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (IATA: PVG).

The most used railway stations in Shanghai are Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai Railway Station . Both have bullet trains to Hangzhou and Suzhou. Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station has more trains .

Shanghai Hongqiao Is Easier to Use

For overseas travelers, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is easier to use because it is only 10 minutes' walk to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, which connects the railway lines to Hangzhou and Suzhou.

Shanghai Hongqiao is also closer to some Shanghai attractions, such as the Bund.

What to Do If You Arrive in Shanghai Pudong

Don't worry if your flight arrives in Shanghai Pudong, just take Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Hongqiao. This will take an extra 1½ hours so you are advised to allow at least 2 hours (the more the better) for the transfer, in order to make sure you don't miss your train.

Trains Also Depart from Shanghai Railway Station

Besides Shanghai Hongqiao, the trains to Hangzhou and Suzhou also depart from Shanghai Railway Station .

To get to Shanghai Railway Station, take Metro Line 2 then 3 from Shanghai Hongqiao, or take Metro Line 2 then 1 or 4 from Shanghai Pudong.

Arrival in Hangzhou

When traveling from Shanghai to Hangzhou, most of the trains arrive at Hangzhou East Railway Station and about two to three trains at Hangzhou Railway Station.

Both stations are convenient for travelers because Metro Line 1 connects them and the most famous attraction in Hangzhou - West Lake.

Arrival in Suzhou

When traveling from Shanghai to Suzhou, the trains arrive at Suzhou Railway Station and Suzhou North Railway Station.

Suzhou Railway Station is more convenient as it is about half an hour's drive to some famous gardens and the ancient canal. Don't worry if you arrive in Suzhou North, just take Metro Line 2 to Suzhou Railway Station.

As the journey between Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou takes 1–2 hours, travelers can take the train to another city, visit attractions within the city, and then return to the departure city or go to the third city in one day.

Although there are plenty of trains, you are still advised to book your ticket(s) early, especially during Chinese holidays and rush hours.

Accommodation Options: Shanghai, Hangzhou, or Suzhou

As Shanghai has more international airlines, you first stop is generally Shanghai. Departing from Shanghai, it is possible to arrive in Hangzhou/Suzhou and return in one day. So, a good choice is to stay in Shanghai throughout your trip.

Staying in Hangzhou or Suzhou after a day visiting the city is another choice. Although you need to carry your luggage all the way, you have the chance to enjoy some activities at night, such as watching a live show in Hangzhou or taking a night cruise in Suzhou.

The Best Times to Visit

The best times to visit Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) because the weather is comfortable, warm, and there is less rainfall.

Check the four seasons' weather and forecasts for Shanghai , Hangzhou , and Suzhou .

Notice: Peak Season

During Chinese national holidays, such as May 1 st to 3 rd and October 1 st to 7 th , there will be more visitors in the three cities. You are advised to book your hotel and train ticket(s) as soon as possible.

If you are traveling with us, your travel consultant and guide will suggest some less crowded attractions and experiences for you, and will help you to book some restaurants in advance. We do our best to keep you away from the crowds and shorten your waiting time.

Time Needed: 5 Days

Five days are enough to visit Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. Excluding the day of arrival and the day of departure, you have one day for each of the cities.

If your time is limited, you can still visit all three cities. You can arrive in Shanghai in the morning and visit the Bund in the afternoon or evening. This will save you one day for the whole journey.

If you only have 3 days or less, you can save one city or two for your next visit.

If you are seeking something to do for your layover in Shanghai, it is still possible to enjoy some attractions: half a day is enough for an in-depth visit to the Bund and one day is enough for a day trip of Shanghai, Hangzhou, or Suzhou.

Visa Requirement: 144-Hour Visa-Free

You may enjoy visa-free travel for up to 6 days, which is enough time to visit all three cities of Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Suzhou. Check the 144-hour visa-free policy for information about the visa-free countries and detailed conditions.

In general, we were VERY PLEASED with the services. Very fast response from Sam and Bonnie, they were friendly, the driver was helpful, and schedule of itinerary was very interesting. We had a wonderful adventure from Shanghai to Hangzhou with the smart and charismatic Bonnie! We saw so much, learned so much and even sampled local delicacies together. Bonnie helped us to have a fun experience! We will certainly use Shanghai Private Tour the next time we come to China!

We had an amazing time visiting Hangzhou and are so happy we made it a part of our trip. Everyone we meet in Shanghai recommended visiting Hangzhou and this tour made it very easy and doable especially because we only had one day. Our tour guide Bonnie made the trip so memorable. She told us about the city, flowers, history, and was also great at taking photos! We did other shorter trips by ourselves but we really feel that having a tour guide was necessary to get the most out of Hangzhou in one day. Could not recommend more!

We had a brilliant day with Bonnie visiting Hangzhou. Our journey started being picked up at our hotel in Shanghai for a quick trip to the train station. We hadn't had breakfast yet so Bonnie helped us chose some typical morning options to eat while we were waiting for the train to depart. On the way to Hangzhou we discussed all of the sites to see and we had a customized tour based on Bonnie's recommendations. After a fast 1hr+ on the bullet train we arrived in Hangzhou where we were all collected by a local driver. We headed up to "tea mountain" a beautiful location where the local 'dragon well' tea is planted. Afterwards he had lunch at a very tasty local restaurant and continued our planned excursion to a temple and the lake and really enjoyed the rest of the day. We highly recommend this trip and Bonnie was a great guide. We have found that the private tours give a real "friend" experience as it's like you know the person who is taking you around.

The trip to Hangzhou was more then we expected. Our Guide Nancy kept us informed the whole trip. We had a great boat trip on the lake which Nancy explained all the history of the temples in the area. We enjoyed our time at the Tea Mountain and the history of Tea Making. The trip on the bullet train was the best way to travel.

Booked the day trip to hangzhou for my family. Was greeted by a bilingual guide who was as refreshing as Nancy. She was helpful, responsible and she knows her craft Super well. Guided us the entire day and took really good care of us. Service was exemplary and I would definitely highly recommend anyone who is considering day trip to hangzhou to use her. Thumbs up!

Our tour guide Bonnie picked us up at our hotel lobby and we arrived in Hangzhou via bullet train. She is very efficient and prompt as she has gotten our bullet train tickets in advance so we didn’t need to waste any time. When we arrived in Hangzhou, she brought us to our first stop to have lunch at a local restaurant which was super sumptuous! Bonnie is highly informative as she will share with us the history behind the temples and the West lake. I would definitely highly recommend to use Bonnie as your guide when you visit Hangzhou! She has made our first trip to Hangzhou memorable.

Highly recommend the trip! It was easy to connect with the tour agency ahead of time, and I was reminded to bring an umbrella and my passport in order to board the train to HangZhou the next day. The attention to detail was appreciated and everything on the day of the trip ran smoothly (from the driver pick-ups to getting to the station with time to spare). My guide’s name was Bonnie and she was very knowledgeable and easy to make conversation with. Not only did I learn about HangZhou, but I also got insights into daily Chinese life from the dating scene to apartment prices in Shanghai. Although the weather was horrible with nonstop rain in HangZhou, I enjoyed my private day trip and Bonnie was able to think of alternative activities when the rain got too heavy to walk outside. The trip is pricey but I personally thought it’s a great way to see and learn about the famed West Lake and surroundings if you are not familiar with transport in China or do not have the time/energy to research and navigate on your own.

We had a wonderful adventure from Shanghai to Hangzhou with the smart and charismatic Nancy! We saw so much, learned so much and even sampled local delicacies together. Nancy helped us to have a fun experience! We especially enjoyed the boat ride on westlake, the ancient Lingyin temple and the lunch at a local restaurant.

We had an amazing day visiting Hangzhou from Shanghai by the high speed train, our guide Tommy met us at our hotel promptly and took us first the bullet train and then on to the city, beautiful lake with boat trip and onto a wonderful temple. The lunch at a local farmer's house was FANTASIC! Our guide Tommy was amazing! He was so knowledgable. She helped us find a beautiful local painting to bring home. He was very flexible with our schedule and allowed us plenty of time to see everything on our agenda, plus some extra sites. He was very kind and made sure we enjoyed our trip. We would thoroughly recommend this trip and our guide

This is the 3rd day trip we booked with Shanghai Private Tour for our quick 4 day trip from the USA to experience Shanghai, China. A truly amazing day! Hotel pickup and van ride: We met our guides a little before 8:30am in the hotel lobby. We showed up early and they were already waiting for us. This trip offers hotel pickup from about any hotel in the area (we were staying in the Bund area of town) which is great! The guides were super friendly and have great English language skills. The trip starts with a van ride to the train station. The van was extremely clean and well maintained. The driver was very professional and I felt very confident in his driving skills. Train ride: This was my first experience on a bullet train. You’ll go through basic security at the train station. Make sure to take your passport. The tickets were all purchased ahead of time by our guides, so the process was quick and painless. Zero time wasted going through security. The train station is very clean and nice. The train itself is modern and very smooth. It’s neat seeing speeds of 300 plus km/h (a couple hundred miles per hour) on the screen. The seats are comfortable and the train was one of the nicest I have been on. The train ride takes about 1 hour. We spent the time asking a lot of questions to our guides who were extremely knowledgeable about the many questions we asked. West Lake: Upon reaching Hangzhou, we were picked up by another van. Again, extremely clean with a very professional driver. The van ride takes about 15-20 minutes to get to West Lake. We started the actual tour at West Lake. It’s very scenic. We were lucky enough to get a boat ride around the lake. This took about an hour total. A very pretty area with many great photo opportunities. Lunch and the tea farms: We took a quick van ride from West Lake to our lunch spot. It was a clean restaurant with many food options. We picked a couple of dishes on our own and the guides recommended a couple of others. It is good food and we were happily able to try some new dishes. It’s great to be able to try new things. We ate lunch community style, which allows you to try many different types of food. After lunch, we got to hike into the area where the green tea is being farmed. It was really nice to be out of the hustle of Shanghai and be able to see some of the countryside and nature. There are some beautiful places take pictures in this area. Ling Ying Temple: Ok, this was the highlight for me. Easily the highlight. Make sure to wear some comfortable shoes and take some water with (bottles of water were provided to us by our guides). There’s a lot of walking and a lot of steps. It was in the low 30s Celsius when we were here (mid 80s Fahrenheit) and very humid. The tour of the temple starts with seeing the carvings of Buddha statues into the side of a hill. We’re not talking a few carvings, we’re talking hundreds. And they’re not small. This is a true work of art. Amazing. Absolutely amazing. After seeing the carvings we got to see the temple complex. Unlike the temples you’ll see in the heart of Shanghai, these temples are in a sprawling complex in the wooded hills. It’s a very picturesque place with many amazing views and many temples with many massive Buddha statues. Being here and seeing this was easily the highlight of my trip to Shanghai. Hefang street: We took a van ride from the temple to Hefang street. This is a road from the Qing dynasty. It’s a very old road with many shops. We spent about 25 minutes here. You’ll be able to try samples of many local foods. It was nice being able to try some of the local foods. If you’re a fan of beef jerky, make sure to try the dried pork. I thought it was really good. Back to Shanghai: We took a van from Hefang road back to the train station. From here, it’s a reverse of the morning. Bullet train back to Shanghai and a van ride back to the hotel. The whole day takes about 12 hours. My thoughts: This is the third day trip we did with this company and this was by far my favorite. Every tour we did was very good, but getting out of the city and seeing the temple was amazing and easily my favorite experience from our trip to Shanghai. It’s a bit more costly than some of the options but well worth the investment. Everyone with this tour company has been very professional, yet very fun and educational! If you’re in Shanghai for a few days, this should be one of your experiences. Very highly recommended!

One Day Trip to Hangzhou from Shanghai

Today, I recommend  a day tour to Hangzhou West Lake from Shanghai to a wide of tourists. Reading Guideline:

West Lake

How to get to hangzhou from shanghai.

  • How to Go Sightseeing in West Lake

shanghai to hangzhou day trip

Hangzhou is in the southwest of Shanghai, about 180 kilometers away from Shanghai. Tourists go to Hangzhou from Shanghai by airplane, bus and train, but I recommend train to tourists, cause it is the best option given that cost, time and convenience. From Shanghai to Hangzhou, about 180 trains are available everyday, which falls into four types, fast train(K), high speed train(G), highs speed bullet train(D)and non-stop fast train(T), and the slowest fast train needs about 2.5 hours, and the fastest high speed train takes 46 minutes. Those trains depart Shanghai from Shanghainan Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, and Shanghai Railway Station, and arrive Hangzhou at Hangzhoudong Railway Station and Hangzhou Railway Station. The following table is some information about trains from Shanghai to Hangzhou. From Hangzhoudong Railway Station to West Lake scenic area, take subway Line 1 at the railway station and get off at Longxiang bridge station, then walk about 5 minutes. Or you could take a taxi, which won’t cost more than 30 yuan. From Hangzhou Railway Station to West Lake scenic area, take No. 7 public bus at the railway station bus stop and get off at Shaoniangong bus stop or take subway Line 1 or take a taxi.

How to Go Sightseeing in West Lake

shanghai to hangzhou day trip

If you go around the lake by eletromobile or go to the scenes by boat, then you save much time for sightseeing, but it will cost much money. For a boat touring, you could rent an electric-boat, and drive it by yourself, rent a rowing boat, or take a gaily-painted boat, but the first two kinds of boat require 4 or 5 persons. If you have much time left after touring West Lake, you could go to other attractions in the West Lake which I don’t introduce, or go to visit Linyin Temple or some museums close to this scenic area. After a tour in West Lake, you may go to have a meal, then back to Shanghai by train. The last high speed train from Hangzhou to Shanghai leaves at 22:39.

Hangzhou is around 175 km (109 mi) from Shanghai, and naturally, there is no flight between the two cities due to the short distance. There are two modes of transportation between Shanghai and Hangzhou; here is a comparison of their prices, speed, and convenience.

  • 1. High-speed/bullet train (recommended, fastest)
  • 2. Long-distance bus

There is a proposal to construct a maglev train connecting Shanghai and Hangzhou. The proposed speed for the maglev train is 600 km per hour (373 mi), which means that you can complete a trip in less than 30 minutes.

Shanghai to Hangzhou by Bullet Train (Recommended, Fastest)

The recommended way to travel between Shanghai and Hangzhou is by high-speed/bullet train. It is the fastest and most popular way to travel and takes about 1–1½ hours. Around 150 trains run between these two cities daily.

Shanghai to Hangzhou by Bus

The bus takes about 2½–4½ hours from Shanghai to Hangzhou, with tickets priced at RMB 71–106 (USD 10–15), depending on the route. There are several bus stations from where you can catch a ride. Travelers most frequently use the following three.

Hangzhou, China

Beijing, Shanghai, Yangtze River. These well-known Chinese destinations are familiar to the seasoned traveler, but Hangzhou? Not so much. This eastern metropolis is rich in history and culture spanning more than 2,000 years, yet it stands in the shadow of its better-known siblings. What sets Hangzhou apart from other Chinese cities is not only its beauty but its tranquility, a characteristic that stands in sharp contrast to other, more frantically paced, parts of the country.

Here, top things to do in this below-the-radar Chinese city.

Boating on the Grand Canal

Grand Canal in Hangzhou, China.

The world's oldest and longest canal, the Grand Canal begins in Hangzhou and ends in Beijing, extending 1,200 miles between two of China's most magnificent cities. It's nearly 1,400 years old and is a beautiful, yet intricate marvel of engineering. It was created under the direction of Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty as a way to transfer rice from the fertile Yangtze region to the masses in the north. In Hangzhou, the canal's southern tip, visitors can take a boat ride through China's changing landscape, watching stone bridges and beautiful pagodas make way for the factories and apartment buildings and other signposts of everyday life that line the banks.

Walking in the West Lake region

Jixian Pavilion of Hangzhou West Lake, China.

The West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its boat rides and the majestic "Impression West Lake" a light, music, dance, and theater production that literally takes place on the water (produced by the famed Zhang Yimou, who created the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing). But the walking and hiking trails that abound in this picturesque area are equally worth exploring. Wander around under ornate stone bridges, ancient temples, and massive pagodas and you'll find solace away from the crowds. One of the prettiest walks is along the causeway connecting Broken Bridge with Solitary Hill. Created during the Tang Dynasty by Bai Juyi, governor of Hangzhou, the path is lined with hundreds of willow trees, making it a tranquil, easy-to-follow trail.

Exploring Xixi National Wetland Park

Xixi Hangzhou National Wetland Park is a national wetland park in China, located at the west part of ... [+] Hangzhou.

This expansive wetland dates back 4,000 years, and was made a national park in 2005, in part to protect its fragile ecosystem. Located in the northwest of Hangzhou, Xixi crosses six waterways and spans over 2,500 acres; 70% of which is covered by water. A boat ride along Xixi is an opportunity to see wild geese, pheasants, and egrets, along with local flora such as plum, willow, bamboo, hibiscus, and persimmon trees. There are ten scenic spots within the park; the Lotus Flower Eco-Reserve Area is the best place for bird-watching while Plum Village is a blanket of plum trees (over 3,000)—a must-see when they're in bloom. In June, the wetland is the site of one of the largest dragon boat festivals in China.

Real madrid coach ancelotti fires warning to vinicius jr., 1 dead, 3 injured in landslide in alaska’s ketchikan, strolling through hangzhou's botanical gardens.

Hangzhou, China, has a beautiful botanical garden area.

Koi ponds, stone bridges, a bamboo forest, and, of course, China's beloved lotus flower can be seen along the trails that crisscross these lush gardens. A day spent here is one of relaxation and leisure throughout the year. In the summer the hammock forest is in full swing; the Yulan trees are the signal that spring has begun. Autumn brings the fragrant osmanthus, and the piney woods line the horizon in winter. The showstopper is Lingfeng Hill, where more than 5,000 plum trees stand upright in a roseate blaze.

Learning calligraphy at Xiling Seal Engraver

One of the activities in Hangzhou, China, is learning the art of calligraphy.

China has a long tradition of calligraphy, dating back to ancient times. And the best place to learn the art is at Hangzhou's Xiling Seal Engraver's Society, which was founded in 1904. This group is world-known for its epigraphy, calligraphy, and painting on bronze and stone tablets. Visitors are given tools and taught how to engrave their own symbol on a stone seal.
