Remember When: Pink Floyd’s Flying Pig Breaks Free During a Concert (1977)

What images pop into your head when someone mentions the band Pink Floyd? The prism on the cover of Dark Side of the Moon ? Perhaps a giant wall constructed on stage? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a giant balloon shaped as a pig flying over their concerts?

That last one shows that the band had a fanciful side to contrast the oft-dire subject matter of their music. But it wasn’t so funny (or maybe it was) when that pig got loose of its tethers one fateful day back in the mid-’70s and caused a bit of a stir in Great Britain. You’ve heard of the Pink Floyd song “When the Tigers Broke Free?” Well, let’s look back at the time when the pig broke free.

What’s It All About, Algie?

To get to the bottom of this strange-but-true classic rock tale, we need to go back to why Pink Floyd felt it necessary to include a floating porcine as part of its stage show. After Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here , Floyd was struggling to compose their next record circa 1976. They ended up relying on a few long musical pieces that they’d been trotting out in concerts for years.

Roger Waters, the band’s lyricist, found a way to hang a concept on those pieces in keeping with the thematic bent of Floyd’s previous records. Animals , released in 1977, would borrow some from George Orwell’s animal farm, but it was also Waters’ way of looking out at society and classifying the groups that he saw comprising the world, each of which would occupy one of the long songs on the album. There were “Dogs” who did whatever they could to get to the top, and there were “Sheep” who blindly followed whatever they were told by the powers that be.

And then there were “Pigs,” uppity, moralistic types who looked down their snouts at everyone below them. Since they were known for their innovative, evocative album covers, Floyd decided that the pigs should factor into the Animals artwork. Waters was also intrigued by the architecture of Battersea Power Station, with its spires rising somewhat ominously into the sky.

Thus, the idea was to have a 40-foot inflatable pig named Algie, designed by Waters and Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis (who worked on many Floyd covers), fly over the towers. As they would find out the hard way, you just can’t trust balloon animals sometimes.

Pigs Really Can Fly

The first day’s attempts to take photos of the pig were ruined by bad weather. Floyd had hired a marksman to shoot down the pig in case it became unmoored. (Can you imagine the record company seeing that on the expense report?) Unfortunately, no one told him he would be needed the next day when they tried to get the photos once again.

So it was on a blustery December day that Algie, the inflatable pig, shook free from its surly bonds when one of its moorings rubbed up against the Battersea chimneys, and she took off across the London sky. While this all might seem comical, the consequences could have been dire when the pig popped into the flight paths of planes coming into Heathrow Airport.

Flights were grounded, the British Air Force was alerted, and Powell was taken into custody. Later that evening, the pig was found on a nearby farm, thus ending the drama. When the principals returned to try it all again, the sky’s colors just weren’t conducive to the photo. As a result, the final cover image was a doctored shot, with a studio picture of the pig superimposed alongside one of the towers from when the lighting was just right.

It should be noted that there are many who contend that the entire thing was planned by the members of Pink Floyd as a massive publicity stunt. Considering that Animals didn’t do quite the business of the records that preceded it, maybe that would have been money better spent elsewhere.

The Pig That Wouldn’t Die

Algie, or at least versions of her, has enjoyed a long history with the band that created her, even as the members of that band went their separate ways as the years progressed. The pig flew over stadiums on the 1977 In The Flesh Tour that supported the Animals album. When Waters made an acrimonious split from Pink Floyd in the ‘80s, he kept the rights to use the pig. David Gilmour and the rest of the reunited Floyd got around the copyright by adding testicles to their version of the pig for concerts in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

As it turns out, Algie just likes to go for a jaunt every once in a while. When Waters played Coachella in 2008, the inflatable pig once again cut loose, and there was even a reward offered for her safe return. That rebellious spirit is just what we’ve come to expect from rock and roll’s most famous farm animal.

Everyone that is a Pink Floyd fan knows the iconic album Animals released in 1977, but they especially know the song “ Pigs (3 Different Ones) .”

As the rebel band of the ’70s, Pink Floyd created influentially emblematic ballads regarding social/ political contentions in Britain at the time that changed the lives of many.

The real and distressed theme that this amazing band had going for them allowed them to become a rebellious and glorious success in the UK and the United States.

Pink Floyd tribute band Pigs on the Wing return to Gesa Power House Theatre on their “Wish You Were Here” concert tour on Saturday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Pigs on the Wing has on occasion been referred to as “the most punk rock of the Pink Floyd tributes” and that is a badge the band wears with unequivocal pride. None are bigger fans of the work of Pink Floyd than the members of Pigs on the Wing, and while the band approaches the material with the deepest respect for legacy of the music, they also chart a course suggesting a willingness to push the musical boundaries of a traditional tribute band.

Tracing its roots to a one-off performance in Portland in 2006, Pigs on the Wing has steadily developed a devoted fanbase and a reputation for delivering a high quality, high energy take on Pink Floyd’s music, steeped in the NW’s own rich musical heritage.

All members of the band are seasoned veterans of the original NW rock scene and balance a decidedly un-tribute like attitude towards the music with a deep understanding of the precision and importance of Pink Floyd’s music in many fans’ lives. The result is a sound and experience both refreshing in delivery and yet true to the original – something the band believes sets it apart from other Pink Floyd tributes.

Pigs on the Wing’s 2021-2022 feature show is a full album performance of Pink Floyd’s 1975 psychedelic masterpiece Wish You Were Here , followed by a full second set of carefully curated Roger Waters era Floyd.

When English progressive rock giants Pink Floyd ended their In the Flesh tour at Olympic Stadium on July 6, 1977, none of us could have predicted that the concert would spawn The Wall — a best-selling double album, a 1982 movie starring Bob Geldof, several elaborate concert tours, a documentary film and, most recently, the Opéra de Montréal production at Place des Arts that runs through March 27.

Much has been made of how bassist Roger Waters spat on a spectator during that show — dramatized in the opera’s opening scene — and how it led him to compose the dark parable of alienation and wartime loss. But looking back 40 years to that catalytic concert when I was 16, I’m confident that the spitting was just one of several incidents that sparked the idea of building a wall between the band and its audience.

It was the first concert at the unfinished Big O, and with attendance estimates between 80,000 and 100,000, the largest Montreal audience for a single band. 

My friends and I had seen Pink Floyd twice before, so we knew the smoke could get pretty thick down front — and that was exactly where we parked ourselves. Two years earlier, when they performed their Dark Side of the Moon album at Montreal’s Autostade football stadium, those of us up front had been blown backward by the explosion when a prop airplane crashed on the stage during the lead-in to Time.

Unlike other prog-rock bands like Yes and Genesis, whose concerts closely reproduced their recordings, Pink Floyd rarely played a song the same way twice. For those of us who knew every note of their albums by heart, it was a treat to hear them improvise. This time there was a bonus — rumour had it that Snowy White, the band’s supplementary guitarist, would play a solo that wasn’t on the album version of Pigs on the Wing.

A rowdy group of older kids, clearly inebriated, positioned themselves near us by the metal barriers in front of the stage, and were already whistling and screaming when the concert began.

Rick Wright’s bucolic organ intro to Sheep echoed around the concrete stadium, but the mood was killed by loud belches and catcalls. For the next half hour they lit firecrackers and created a major nuisance. People sitting further back may not have been aware of them, but for those of us in front it was a real problem.

When Waters finally picked up an acoustic guitar and began Pigs on the Wing — if there was going to be that extra guitar solo, it was coming up — one of our rowdy neighbours tossed a firecracker at the stage. It went off near Waters’s head.

“Aw, fer f—‘s sake,” he shouted with a hard, downward strum. “Stop lighting off fireworks and shouting and screaming. I’m trying to sing a song! I don’t care if you don’t want to hear it, you know, f— it, I’m sure there’s a lot of people who do want to hear it.” ( His comments can be heard on bootleg recordings available on YouTube.)

At this point it looked like the band might storm off — surely causing a riot — and if thousands of angry kids rushed the stage, those of us up front would be crushed. There was no escape. Luckily, Waters restarted the song, and yes, White did step forward and play a slow, bluesy guitar solo that wasn’t on the record, but I couldn’t enjoy it as I scouted possible exit routes should things turn ugly. 

In his autobiography Inside Out, drummer Nick Mason suggested that the Olympic Stadium was a bad choice for the concert. “The tower soared up to enormous heights, and by its very scale the venue was not conducive to a warm and fuzzy rapport with the fans,” he wrote — even though the stadium tower had yet to be built in 1977.

Sure enough, nothing was warm and fuzzy after that. The infamous spitting occurred during the next song. I didn’t see it — in my defence, I was distracted by the 30-foot pig floating above my head — but I was aware of yet another commotion nearby. Several accounts agree that roadies grabbed the loudest of the firecracker gang, dragged him up to the stage and held him while Waters leaned in and spat square in his face.

That tense atmosphere continued throughout the show. When the band was called back for a third encore by a mammoth audience that clearly wasn’t leaving, guitarist David Gilmour was so angry that he refused to go on. In order to avoid a riot, the others played a long 12-bar blues improvisation during which the road crew took away the equipment, piece by piece. Mason was the last to go, still on his drum stool, carried off the now-bare stage by two burly roadies. This was the last concert Pink Floyd would play before recording The Wall in 1979. And if anyone missed the reference, the tour’s title, In the Flesh, would recur as The Wall’s opening track.

Mason recalled the incident with humour. “Whether the confrontation in Montreal had any life-changing impact on the hapless spat-upon fan remains unknown,” he wrote. “Suffice to say that he has never employed a lawyer, nor claimed any royalties for creative inspiration.”

Using authentic instruments and equipment, the band recreates the sound and live concert experience of Pink Floyd in their heyday. PIGS shows truly are a labour of love. Over a dozen different guitars and basses are used each night, songs are carefully performed combining aspects of both studio and original live versions, and the correct equipment is used when possible down to the proper cables and guitar strings. Set-lists are developed to highlight both the biggest hits and the most interesting rarities; PIGS are driven to keep their shows fresh, dynamic, authentic, and exciting for their fans.

The Time Pink Floyd's Giant Inflatable Pig Floated Away

A huge inflatable pig had been a fixture at Pink Floyd's flashy live concerts since the balloon was featured on the album artwork for 1977's Animals . The giant prop became synonymous with their stage shows, and it even was included in a custody battle after Pink Floyd broke up.

In 1986, after years of animosity, guitarist David Gilmour and bassist Roger Waters battled over the Pink Floyd name and iconography in court. While Gilmour was awarded the rights to the band name, the court granted Waters the rights to the pig . Gilmour, who planned to continue touring with Pink Floyd’s name and music, paid his former bandmate to license the inflatable icon, even though hostility between the two remained intense.

Waters has continued to use giant inflatable pigs at concerts during his solo career. During his 2006 The Dark Side of the Moon Live Tour, a pig was released at one of his concerts with the words "Impeach Bush" graffitied on its side.

During the pig’s long career as a stage prop, it seemed inevitable that someone would lose hold of its ropes and release it (in a repeat of what happened when artists working for the band first tried to get the shot for the Animals cover), and that’s exactly what happened during Waters’s performance at the 2008 Coachella Festival.

The ninth Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival attracted more than 150,000 people to the California desert. Headliners that year included Prince, Jack Johnson, and Roger Waters, who closed the festival on Sunday, April 27.

Waters’s set was accompanied by his usual fog and pyrotechnics , and it also saw the two-story-tall pig ascend over the audience. The balloon’s handlers trudged their way through the crowd, trying their best to control the prop. But, appropriately, during the song “Run like Hell,” the pig became unmoored and slowly floated off into the desert sky.

“That’s my pig,” Waters told the crowd , but—as he said on The Wall — the show must go on. He and his band continued the set.

Coachella organizers offered  a $10,000 reward and four lifetime festival passes for the return of the pig. Three days after its escape, the balloon was found in tatters across the properties of two families in the nearby town of La Quinta, California.

“We found your pig, but it looks more like pulled pork,” one of the homeowners told Coachella organizers . The two families split the passes and gave the $10,000 away to local children’s music nonprofits.

As for the pig, Coachella’s organizers kept its tattered carcass as a memento.
