Hozier at Shoreline Amphitheatre

Hozier tickets, shoreline amphitheatre - ca | mountain view, california.

Hozier

A decade ago, when his hit single "Take Me To Church" took the world by storm, Hozier did not expect that his life would completely change. From being a simple singer-songwriter in County Wicklow, Ireland, Hozier (Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) was catapulted into global stardom, landing him the opportunity to be signed to major labels. His eponymous debut album was a massive success, selling over four million copies and earning multiple platinum certifications in several countries. The album also earned him a Grammy nod and foreshadowed what his career would become.

Over the years, Hozier was active in touring and producing music. In every song, EP, or album he releases, fans can expect that he is true to his brand of producing quality songs that are packed with powerful lyrics. Each release has depth and, most of the time, hidden levels of meaning in the songs that are up to the listener to figure out. His themes, which don't shy away from touchy subjects to pack more philosophical knowledge into them, go well with his lyrical quality. On top of it, his baritone voice and folk and gospel-inspired music make these words stand out. Thus drawing listeners to listen closely to what he has to offer. This is evident in his sophomore album "Wasteland, Baby!" released in 2019, which tackled apocalyptic and socio-political themes.

The album did not mirror the massive success of his debut, yet it was a major success in its own right. Dubbed by critics as "an album that celebrates emotion and the wonder of music," "Wasteland, Baby!" solidified Hozier's place in the soul, rock, and indie music scene. Four years later, he would put out another incredible album, which is an ode to the pandemic experience. With songs like "Eat Your Young" and "Francesca," the Irish singer-songwriter showed once again the depth of his songwriting abilities, musicality, and vocal prowess.

In support of the album, the 34-year-old artist has embarked on a tour that has taken him already to several cities in the US. Originally slated to be only in roughly 40 cities, the tour has been extended due to popular demand. New dates have been added, and one of them is his stop at Mountain View, California's Shoreline Amphitheatre, on September 10. Catch his soulful and guitar-slinging greatness on this incredible Tuesday night. Tickets are now available, and you can get yours here by hitting the "Get Tickets" link. Just this year he embarked on the most ambitious tour of his career, making his live debut at venues like Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl . When Do Hozier Tickets Go On Sale?

Tickets for Hozier  go on sale to the general public on Friday, November 17th at 12pm local time.

What Is The Hozier Presale Code?

You won’t need a presale code to access tickets for Hozier’s new dates on The Unreal Unearth Tour. Just be ready to buy tickets when they go on sale on Friday, November 17th at 12pm local time . To increase your chances you’ll want to decide on your preferred Hozier tour date ahead of time and then bookmark the page for quick access.

Fans who purchase tickets but can’t attend will also want to keep in mind that ticket transfers will be restricted for The Unreal Unearth Tour (with the exception of those purchased in Colorado, New York, and Virginia). This is part of an effort by Hozier to limit scalping and exorbitant reseller prices. All buyers will have the option to resell their tickets to other fans at the original price paid using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange.

most anticipated tours of 2024 concerts

Pro Tips When Buying Your Tickets

First, on the day of the presale or general onsale (whichever you prefer), login to your Ticketmaster account ( go to my account or sign in located on the upper right corner of the page ) at least 15 minutes ahead of the sale time. If you don’t have one,  create one now .

Be sure to add your billing info (aka credit card info) before jumping into the digital queue for a quick check-out. Once the presale starts, remain in the digital queue. Only use one browser window because using multiple browsers or devices and multiple accounts with the same phone number can result in errors. Trust, it’s happened to us before! Don’t refresh your page, do be patient, don’t leave your page, do get those tickets!

What To Do If Tickets Are Sold Out?

If tickets sell out, your other option is to buy them via online resellers like VividSeats or StubHub. When all else fails, we prefer these resell options because both offer a 100% Guarantee. You can also purchase resell tickets through Ticketmaster’s resell program. Just search for the concert or event you want to attend , and see if they have any resell tickets available. We recommend you compare the three options and find out which works best for you.

Alternatively, you can hit it old school style and show up at the concert when the box office opens and wish upon a star that they release more tickets, or hopefully, another concert-goer has an extra ticket to sell at face-value or even giveaway for free. Trust, this happens more often than not! We’ve given away many tickets to sold-out shows simply because our +1 couldn’t make it.

Also, more standard tickets are often released via Ticketmaster 1-3 days leading up to the show date. We’ve seen it with Beyonce , Taylor Swift , Arctic Monkeys and many more! It’s a secret gatekeeped by many, but if you’re reading this, now you know! So be sure to set your calendar notifications!

Recent tour reviews

The gig itself was incredible. Hozier and the family sound as pure and perfect as they do on recordings - it's insane how amazing they are! The engagement with the audience was on point too - Hozier is a warm and welcoming showman, with a definite ear for his audience and a love for performing that shows at every turn.

Kudos to David Keenan for opening the show. He has a unique style that I'm sure will serve him well in the years to come. Purchased the vinyl to play as soon as I got home.

As for City Hall itself, I have never been to watch music before (just stand-up shows or 'An Audience With...' nights) but I have to say, the acoustics are phenomenal. Because of the layout, everything feels intimate and the view was outstanding from most points in the auditorium.

A fantastic night!

I am absolutely in love with Hozier's voice and talent. It was my wish since years to go to his concert. That finally happened in Munich last night.

The location was great. Unfortunately the opening of the concert was far from anything good!

A solo singer (Kevin) who had a powerful voice but could not really be able to have audiences and at some point it got really boring after the second song... He sang 5-6 songs and you could feel that the crowd is getting resltess wants him to finish up and leave.

Then we had to wait for more than 45 min for the band to show up on the stage! I have never been waiting this long in all the concerts attended to so far! We were waiting, they did not bother to give some information or some sign... Finally when the band show up nobody even apologised for such a long delay!

Despite all these, Hozier / band was great on the stage! He sang for 2 hours and almost all the songs I was so looking forward to hearing them live! I do hope to see them again but this time with much better time management and organisation!

was out of this world, best night of my life. one drawback was when andrew encouraged people to leave their seats and come down to the stage, but the venue staff turned everyone away when they tried. was pretty disheartening and upsetting but didn't let it ruin my night.

andrew and the band were in top form, and got everyone out if their seats and standing and singing along (society has so beaten everyone down in terms of expressing themselves and caring what everyone else thinks that even among a thousand people who loved one man and his music, we found difficult to show it.) so thanks andrew for not taking us at face value (a theatre full of blinking goldfish in their seats for the first few songs, forgive us, i know that i was pretty overwhelmed. and i already have huge issues with confidence without adding 1k+ people to the mix)

love you hozier, hope to see you soon, and even meet you next time <3<3<3

hozier tour california

Hozier is one of the most successful folk artists of the 21st century. Born Andrew Hozier-Byrne, the Irish singer-songwriter first toured internationally as a member of the Irish vocal group Anúna before going solo in 2012. His watershed moment came a year later when his first single, “Take Me to Church” was released. In 2014, it rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and ushered in Hozier’s self-titled debut, which itself reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. “Take Me to Church” closed 2014 as Spotify’s most-shared song of the year and garnered Hozier’s first career Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. His 2019 sophomore full-length, Wasteland Baby!, topped the Billboard 200 and was supported by Hozier’s first solo headlining world tour. In 2023, Hozier released his third album, Unreal Unearth . Throughout his career, Hozier has collaborated with artists such as Mavis Staples, Annie Lennox, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan, Brandi Carlile and composer Bear McCreary.

Out of body experience.

you know those videos on tiktok of people sliding off their beds... that what the entire concert felt like. It was unreal.

Simply wow. Hozier gave us personality when he spoke to the crowd and explained each song. He gave an amazing performance with the lights and effects, and his set list was superb. 10000/10, I would definitely pay to see him again if he was coming back to Toronto.

If you are thinking about going to his show, definitely do it. It is a completely different yet awesome experience, no matter where in the audience you are!

I Wish Hozier Was Real!

Perfect, perfect, perfect. Big props to the Sound team and Light team, they pulled off a fantastic mix of vocals, instruments, and use of lighting ques, it was a perfect blend that by the end of show it left your heart wondering "what now?"The set list of song captured the feeling of Hoziers latest album Unreal Earth and the visual que's just added to magic. It has been 1 week since the show and I am still longing for that magical night.

A beautiful performance!

Hozier is a beautiful man, with a beautiful voice and beautiful lyrics. He is genuine and simply amazing! The light show was superbe! I'm still in awe!

Hozier Vancouver

Best concert ever!! It was absolutely magical and the highlight of my life.

A life-changing experience

This is quite literally the best concert I have ever been to. I cried, I laughed, I felt like I was a floating. Hozier is an amazing performer, not just in connecting with his audience but in making the audience feel connected to one another. I'm going to remember this night for the rest of my life.

Absolutely incredible

Exceeded my expectations and was by far the best concert I have ever attended. Rogers area a could use a little work with their floor line management but overall my experience was overwhelmingly positive. Hozier is an incredible performer and an amazing singer. Genuinely cannot put into words the emotions I felt during that performance. Fair warning though for those who have never attended a concert before- it is incredibly loud to the point that it can be uncomfortable at times. If you have sensory issues or are sensitive to loud sounds I would highly recommend hearing protection!

Unbelievable!!!

It was incredible!! Best show I’ve ever seen!! The sound was spotless, the band didn’t miss a beat and hozier sing like an angel !!

incredible experience

hozier was the most incredible insane amazing performance ever

Hozier ’s “Too Sweet” ascends to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, three weeks after it debuted at No. 5. The Irish singer-songwriter achieves his first Hot 100 leader. In his sole prior run in the top 10, he hit No. 2 with his breakthrough hit “Take Me to Church” in 2014-15.

“Too Sweet” is from Hozier’s EP Unheard , which debuted three weeks ago as his fourth Billboard 200 top 10. In 2023, he began his first U.S. tour since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic; the trek continues with international dates scheduled through November. He told Billboard ahead of the tour’s start, and reflecting anticipation for his new music, “I’m just excited to share the work live with a fan base that has been with me now for 10 years.”

Plus, Sabrina Carpenter earns her first Hot 100 top 10 as “Espresso” enters the chart at No. 7. The song follows her first top 40 hit, “Feather,” which concurrently flies to a new No. 21 high on the latest list.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. All charts (dated April 27, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, April 23. For all chart news, you can follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Below is a look at Hozier’s Hot 100 coronation and Carpenter’s top 10 launch.

How ‘Sweet’ It Is

Hozier’s “Too Sweet,” on Rubyworks/Columbia Records, becomes the 1,169th No. 1 in the Hot 100’s history. It drew 35.6 million streams (down 3%) and 14.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 136%, good for top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100) and sold 6,000 (down 17%) April 12-18.

The single, which Hozier co-wrote and co-produced, rises 2-1 to become his first leader on the Streaming Songs chart; dips to No. 5 from its No. 3 high on Digital Song Sales ; and debuts at No. 42 on Radio Songs .

The song was first widely heard via a teaser snippet during Hozier’s March 6 appearance on the How Long Gone podcast, ahead of its proper release March 22 on his four-track EP Unheard .

After Hozier’s introductory hit “Take Me to Church” reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 2014-15, he remained absent from the chart until adding five entries since last April, led by Noah Kahan’s “Northern Attitude,” remixed with Hozier; the song debuted and peaked at No. 37 in November.

When “Too Sweet” debuted at No. 5 on the April 6-dated Hot 100, Hozier ended the longest wait between top 10s since The Beatles returned to the tier after nearly 28 years with “Now and Then” last November. Meanwhile, Hozier waited the longest between a first No. 2 hit and a first No. 1 since The Miracles – over 50 years ago. Their “Shop Around” hit No. 2 in February 1961 before “The Tears of a Clown,” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, led in December 1970, a span of nine years, nine months and three weeks; Hozier waited nine years, four months and one week between the peaks of “Take Me to Church” and “Too Sweet.”

“Too Sweet” adds a fourth week at No. 1 on the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart – where it’s Hozier’s second leader, after “Take Me to Church,” for 23 weeks in 2014-15 – as well as Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs .

Ireland Back at No. 1 in the U.S.

“Too Sweet” marks the fifth Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act. It’s the first since Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990 and the first by a male soloist since Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)” over a half-century ago.

Here’s a rundown of all Hot 100 No. 1s by Irish acts:

  • Hozier, “Too Sweet,” hit No. 1 April 27, 2024, one week at No. 1 to date
  • Sinéad O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U,” April 21, 1990, four weeks
  • U2, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” Aug. 8, 1987, two
  • U2, “With or Without You,” May 16, 1987, three
  • Gilbert O’Sullivan, “Alone Again (Naturally),” July 29, 1972, six

Hozier was born in Newcastle, County Wicklow, Ireland, on March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day, of course – in 1990 (a little over a month before O’Connor’s signature hit became the last Hot 100 No. 1 by an Irish act until “Too Sweet”). Additionally, “Too Sweet” tops the Ireland Songs chart for a third week.

‘One Sweet,’ ‘Too Sweet’

Hozier’s “Too Sweet” is also just the fifth Hot 100 No. 1 with the word “sweet” in its title.

Here’s a look at all such confections to top the Hot 100:

  • “Too Sweet,” Hozier, 2024
  • “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96
  • “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” Guns N’ Roses, 1988
  • “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” Eurythmics, 1983
  • “My Sweet Lord”/“Isn’t It a Pity,” George Harrison, 1970-71

(Additional sugar high: Sweet Sensation’s “If Wishes Came True” led the Hot 100 in 1990.)

Shot of ‘Espresso’

Sabrina Carpenter brews up her first Hot 100 top 10 as “Espresso” debuts on the chart at No. 7. Released April 12 , it drew 19.8 million streams and 5.1 million in airplay audience and sold 4,000 in its first week.

The song enters the Hot 100 while Carpenter’s first top 40 hit, and first Pop Airplay chart No. 1 , “Feather,” rises to a new No. 21 high on the latest Hot 100. It also follows the singer-songwriter and actress’s performances at both weekends of this year’s Coachella festival. She previously supported Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour for 30 dates from last August through March.

‘Like That’ Leads Rest of Top 10

Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar’s “Like That” drops to No. 2 after spending its first three weeks on the Hot 100 at No. 1. It concurrently tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multimetric methodology as the Hot 100, for a fourth week each.

Future & Metro Boomin's 'We Still Don't Trust You' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200

Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” keeps at No. 4, four weeks after becoming his first No. 1. The latter logs a second week atop Radio Songs (69.9 million, essentially even week-over-week).

Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” rises 6-5 on the Hot 100, after it reigned for two weeks in early March. It leads the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a 10th week.

Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin on Me” lifts 7-6, following six nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in December; Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” is steady at No. 8, after it debuted at No. 1 in March; Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” climbs to a new No. 9 high, from No. 10; and SZA’s No. 6-peaking “Saturn” returns to the region (15-10), as it leads Hot R&B Songs for a fourth week.

Also notably, and expectedly – with limited availability for it to be streamed in the April 12-18 tracking week – J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill” falls off the Hot 100, a week after it debuted at No. 6. On the song, he appears to respond to Lamar’s apparent disses directed at himself and Drake in “Like That.” Days after releasing “7 Minute Drill” April 5 on his album Might Delete Later , J. Cole apologized for the its arrival, explaining that it doesn’t “sit right with my spirit,” and the track was removed from the streaming edition of the LP April 12; as of April 22, it is still available on the set’s digital download edition, although not for individual purchase apart from the album.

The song rewrites the record for the steepest drop off the Hot 100 a week after debuting, surpassing Soko’s viral hit “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” which spent a week on the survey at No. 9 in April 2014.

Hozier’s Too Sweet tops US charts: ‘Fans started making videos with it on TikTok ... it snowballed’

Leaving it to fans turned out to be incredibly smart decision as singer becomes fourth irish artist to achieve us number one.

Una Mullally's face

In April, 1990, a month after Andrew Hozier-Byrne was born, Sinéad O’Connor was number one in the US charts with Nothing Compares 2 U. Thirty-four years later, Hozier himself is sitting at number one in the United States, the first time an Irish artist has achieved that accolade since O’Connor’s massive hit.

Hozier’s song is called Too Sweet, a tune that makes him the fourth Irish artist (O’Connor, U2 twice, and Gilbert O’Sullivan) to achieve a US number one. Too Sweet also reached number one in Ireland, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Too Sweet was one of the last songs Hozier worked on for his 2023 album, Unreal Unearth, a concept album built around Dante’s Inferno’s nine circles of hell. Too Sweet was pitched for the “gluttony” part of the record, but it had competition. Ultimately, another track, Eat Your Young, won out. Too Sweet ended up on a four-track EP of tunes that didn’t make the album, titled Unheard. None of this would indicate that Hozier and his team had a number one single on their hands. Serendipity, certainly, had a role to play in that.

On March 6th, the podcast, How Long Gone, released a new episode, featuring an interview with Hozier. The EP was played for people in the room, and the podcast episode accidentally included a snippet of Too Sweet. “Everyone immediately panicked,” Niall Muckian told me this week. Muckian is a key figure in Hozier’s management team, the founder of Rubyworks Records, and signed Hozier at the outset of his career. After the initial alarm over a clip of the song ending up in the public domain, a collective conclusion was reached, that was, from Muckian’s perspective, a feeling of, “ah sure look, it’s out there now”. Fans immediately picked up on the snippet, initially misidentifying it as another unreleased track, Wildflower and Barley.

‘We could see the numbers just growing and growing off user-generated videos up until release day ... So we knew something was going on with the song’ —   Niall Muckian

“Fans started making videos with it on TikTok,” Muckian says, “It was a happy accident. Normally we wouldn’t release, because everything drops at the same time. It was accidentally placed in the fans’ hands, and they ran with it.” TikTok was key to the song’s growth, ultimately driving streaming. In this context, there are essentially two branches of audio on TikTok; an official song release that’s made available as it would be to any streaming platform, and then user-generated ‘sounds’. “This got picked up as UGC [user-generated content],” Muckian says, “It was the snippet from the podcast that was being used. It was all very unofficial. It snowballed. We could see the numbers just growing and growing off user-generated videos up until release day ... So we knew something was going on with the song.”

Leaving it to the fans turned out to be an incredibly smart decision. There was no fancy music video, and little marketing initially. The EP was released on March 22nd, and the song as a single on March 29th. It exploded across streaming platforms. Too Sweet is an earworm that doesn’t so much sneak up on the listener as envelop them instantly. It’s an incredibly moreish tune, with a hook that demands repeat visits, “I’ll take my whiskey neat, my coffee black and my bed at three, you’re too sweet for me.” It also has a soft entry point. There’s the infectious baseline, Hozier’s louche vocal, and a minute in, the chorus lands. Game over. How genius to build a song around concepts of sweetness the listener ends up craving.

In the middle of Too Sweet’s climb, one of the most anticipated albums of the year was released, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, also on March 29th. To put the scale of the listenership of Too Sweet in context, Beyoncé's version of Dolly Parton’s Jolene has clocked around 40 million Spotify streams at the time of writing. Two Sweet has accrued around 220 million , and rising. Too Sweet entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number five, then number two, then number one.

[  Hozier in 3Arena: A sleek, polished and powerful performance from the Wicklow man  ]

It’s difficult to communicate to audiences in Ireland how big Hozier is in the US. He is on the second leg of a US tour, playing huge venues in North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oklahoma, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, California. In New York in June, he’ll play four nights at Forest Hills Stadium, home of the US Open. “It’s not an east-west coast tour,” Muckian says of the schedule, “It’s all of America. It’s the old school way that U2 would have done it.” Last year, on another 27-leg US tour, Hozier played Madison Square Garden in New York City for the first time, a gig I attended, and was struck by the intensity of the fandom, the ear-splitting screams almost lifting the roof off the well known venue.

On social media, Hozier has expressed his gratitude. “It’s absolutely staggering,” he said in a recent video, “I’m taken massively by surprise by it.” In an industry characterised by colossal marketing campaigns, playlist chicanery, and long-tail social media strategy, Too Sweet’s success is something of an anomaly. There’s a lesson for artists too: Hozier has stuck to his vision and made music on his own terms. “He’s super-conscious that he’s only interested in his fans, rather than what would work for radio, or the gimmicks that work in the industry, like remixes,” Muckian says, “He stays away from industry tricks. He puts his fans first ... The fact that this is on top 40 radio in United States now, is not because we wanted to design a song for top 40 radio. I think staying true to the fan base is the absolute number one most important thing.”

If we had the ability to assess who is the most beloved figure in music — not in overall numbers, but sheer adoration, per capita and per peer — it likely wouldn’t be Taylor or Beyoncé but Mavis Staples , who has been taking us there since the late ’60s. There being the smile that crosses anyone’s face when fortunate enough to be in the same room, or even in just giving a passing thought to that voice, that presence, and all the different ways in which Staples embodies righteousness. The term “national treasure” doesn’t even begin to get at it.

Popular on Variety

Staples and Raitt nearly had a mild flirtation going on, and that seemed contagious. When Raitt was separately dueting with Browne, she had a moment of spontaneously blurting: “God he’s so good looking, isn’t he?,” noting that after all these years, she was “still looking at him, going, he’s still got it.” (“Bonnie’s still got it, too,” he replied, taking the compliment.)

Stapleton provided more contemporary firepower, hiding his from the spotlight under the shadow of his ever-present cowboy hat but letting his voice ring loud and clear alongside Staples’ on a moving duet of “Friendship,” first recorded by her father, “Pops” Staples, near the end of his life.

Hozier was the artist on the bill with the most heat in the present moment, with a song (“Too Sweet”) currently in the top 5. He also has some of the best bona fides for appearing at a tribute, since he wrote a song that in part pays tribute to Staples and then got her to sing on it — “Nina Cried Power” (named after another great singer who is name-checked in the tune), a single from his second album. Staples did not come out and reprise her vocal on that song, a duty that was instead ably taken over by the night’s backup troupe, the McCrary Sisters. In the absence of the guest of honor, he paid tribute to Staples as he does every night on tour, offering a spoken testimony about her historical impact.

“Artists like Mavis, in the words of WB Yeats, can hold in their work, in the same thought, reality and justice,” Hozier said. “And these two very often opposing things can show us a picture of our world, but also show us our love and the small things  — it could be love between people, our neighbors — the small solidarities that hold our world together. One such example of that, a critical mass, obviously, was the civil rights movement. I say this every show when we play this song: The civil rights movement here in America that Mavis was in the center of directly inspired the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland… And there’s an Irish revolutionary by the name of James Connolly who once wrote that ‘no revolution is ever complete without its poetical expression.’ I just want to say, Mavis has always represented to me the poetical expression of the ongoing revolution of love and kindness.”

Hozier has an earthy side to go along with his high-mindedness, as anyone who has heard “Too Sweet” can attest. And so he paid tribute to Staples having these different sides, too — and showed off his own latent, classic R&B inclinations — by following “Nina Cried Power” with a cover of the sexiest song in Mavis’ career, “Let’s Do It Again,” a No. 1 pop and R&B hit for the Staple Singers in 1975.

“Tweedy wrote this song for me. What year was that? — oh-eiight — and it’s the most beautiful song I had ever heard. So we went on and recorded it, and it got us a Grammy.” At another point in the show, Tweedy sang without Staples in reviving another song he wrote for her, “One True Vine,” the title track of their followup collaboration in 2013.

Performing on his own, Browne told the audience about his discovery of Staples at a key early point in his life. “I always tell Mavis that she’s been with me my whole life, but actually, it was (age) 15 when I first heard the Staple Singers in my sister’s apartment in Height Asbury and it changed everything.” That was when he started finding my own voice and singing my own songs,” and Browne said he was performing his song “These Days” for no other reason than “it’s from that period in my life.”

But he had a more tangible reason for following that with another original song, “World in Motion,” for which Raitt came out to share vocals and play slide guitar. “I recorded it with my band,” he said, “but a good friend of mine had the idea getting it to Pops Staples and having him sing it, which he did in ’92. And the person who had that idea was my good friend, my sister Bonnie Raitt. I’m always revising songs, they change all the time… but this is definitely my favorite version of this song, Pops Staples’ ‘World in Motion.’”

The two key members of Black Pumas, backed by the house band, did their own career-making “Colors,” along with a cover and a cover — the George Clinton-co-penned 1971 Funkadelic song “Can You Get to That,” which Staples and Tweedy adapted in 2013 for the “One True Vine” album.

Closing out the first act, before a brief intermission, Grace Potter covered a song from Mavis’ solo debut album of 1969, called “You’re Driving Me (Into the Arms of a Stranger),” and then emerged from behind her keyboard to explain what Staples meant to her. “This woman, she changed my life,” Potter said. “She made me see my future self and plan ahead for the woman I would become. And I want to play you that song that I wrote after meeting Mavis.” But, she cautioned, before playing “Big White Gate” (a 2013 song written about a woman becoming penitent as she approaches death), “I want to be clear, this is not a sign about Mavis, because it’s not very complimentary!”

Hozier was not the only performer of the night who’d been driven to actually name-check “Mavis” in a song, although his was not a literal tribute to Staples. He performed that original number from 2020 before covering another of the night’s cover-of-a-cover — Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” which not everyone remembers that the Staple Singers did a near-instantaneous version of on a 1967 album (reaching No. 66 at the time on the Hot 100, a few years before the family group really broke big).

Trombone Shorty, a high point of Staples’ 80th birthday concert, came back to reach similar peaks for her 85th, playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” in the first half as well as sitting in with Taj Mahal and Robert Randolph for a jammy moment in the second.

Other highlights included Randolph’s “Baptize Me,” Mahal’s “You’ll Need Somebody on Your Bond,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken ” and “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” McDonald’s “People Get Ready” and “Freedom Highway,” Keb’ Mo’s “Clap Your Hands” and “Have a Little Faith,” and Jones’ “To Live” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

To answer one FAQ, the YouTube Theater event was not filmed for a planned broadcast, even though most all-star concerts put together by Blackbird Presents are; it was a true you-had-to-be-there gala.

Celebrating Mavis seems to be a quinquennial event in L.A., as it doesn’t seem all that long ago that Staples was being feted with an 80th birthday party for the public at downtown’s Orpheum, so here is already looking forward to her 90th, exact local venue to come.

Hozier

Hozier has nothing but love to share with his fans after his song “Too Sweet” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart — his first time hitting the No. 1 spot.

The singer-songwriter is also the first Irish artist — and fourth overall — to lead the chart since Sinéad O’Connor’s (who died in July 2023 at 56) “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Previously, O’Connor’s song spent four weeks at No. 1 in 1990, while the rock band U2 achieved the feat twice in 1987 with “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “With or Without You,” and Gilbert O’Sullivan reached the top spot in 1972 with “Alone Again (Naturally).”

The “Take Me to Church” singer added in the post’s caption, “A huge thank you for all the incredible support from around the world #TooSweet has reached #1 in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and #1 for a second week in the UK and Ireland. It means the world that you’re enjoying this song so much. Thank you all.”

Hozier’s “Too Sweet,” which has gone viral on social media, especially TikTok, in recent weeks, is off his EP Unheard , which was released in March and an expansion of his 2023 album Unreal Unearth .

The last time the “Eat Your Young” artist reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart was in 2014 with his hit song “Take Me to Church.” The single peaked at No. 2.
