Exmouth Accommodations Information
The long summer days are perfect for making the most of your daytime activities, so enjoy a splash in the ocean or hit some tourist spots to take advantage of the low season. Exmouth is cyclone-prone during this time of year though, but don’t worry, you can still travel safely as long as you’re prepared and you stay informed.
Turtle nesting season stretches from November to March; take a guided tour at the Jurabi Turtle Centre to learn about its conservation efforts and watch the turtles make their way to their homes on the beach.
Summer is the best time for swimming in the ocean when the water temperature is nice and cool. Snorkel among the stunning corals and colorful tropical fish in Turquoise Bay or Oyster Stacks—two of the best snorkeling sites in the area. Many places in town offer snorkeling gear for rent.
Looking for more underwater adventures? Head to the Exmouth Navy Pier, considered one of the top dive sites in Australia, for a scuba diving tour. Bring your GoPro to capture the colorful marine life you’ll encounter, from scorpion fish and moray eel to snapper, grouper and sea snakes.
Fall in Exmouth is still considerably warm and dry—so there’s plenty of things you can do outdoors, whether you’re ready to swim, hike or bike. What’s more, you’ll catch the tail end of turtle season and the first appearance of the humpbacks.
Time your visit to coincide with the whale shark migration from mid-March—a swim tour is a bucket list experience for many. The whole town comes together to celebrate the Whale Shark Festival over the last weekend in May, with plenty of food, drinks and entertainment for all.
An outdoor adventure at the Cape Range National Park is ideal during the warm but not scorching hot weather, especially when the fall colors pop. Be prepared for friendly encounters with kangaroos, wallabies and even emus. And if you’re thinking of spending a night or two in the campgrounds, book well ahead—they’re in high demand from April onwards.
Catch the “staircase to the moon” along the coastline—a natural phenomenon that happens when the full moon rises over exposed mudflats at extremely low tide, creating a beautiful stairway-to-the-moon light show. This only happens between March and September along the northwest coast of Australia.
Winter in Exmouth is typically peak tourist season as Australians across the country are drawn to its year-round warm weather—well, warmer than most places—with temperatures dipping to a mild 17℃ around July. Affordable lodging options tend to book out early, so plan way ahead.
Exmouth is home to the Ningaloo Marine Park, where you can swim with humpback whales in August—ethically, of course (only a few operators are licenced to run these swim tours)—when these majestic creatures make their way from the Antarctic to rest in the pristine waters in this part of the world.
If you plan on riding the waves, you won’t be disappointed. Catch the best swells at Dunes Surf Beach from July onwards.
Fishing is a big drawcard at popular spots like Point Edgar, Yardie Creek, Sandy Bay and Pilgramunna. Or better yet, charter a boat for a day trip out in Ningaloo Reef.
It hardly rains in September and the cool weather is an excellent excuse to park yourself beachside all day long. The crowds start to thin out by November so you’ll have plenty of spots to claim your own.
Drive out to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse to catch incredible views of the Ningaloo coast. If you’re there for the sunset, stay a little longer for a spectacular stargazing experience. Trust us, you don’t want to miss this.
The dry season is perfect for a little flying adventure. Soar above the Exmouth Gulf in a microlight—it’s the best way to spot Ningaloo’s humpback whales playing in the waters. Plus, you’ll earn bragging rights and have spectacular photos to boot.
Looking for a fun family activity? Have a go at standup paddleboarding—and don’t worry if you’re a first-timer. There are classes that’ll teach you basic techniques to get you started.

Quick stats about accommodation in Exmouth
Your guide to exmouth, all about exmouth.
Located on Western Australia’s North West Cape, Exmouth is a small town that’s home to some of the country’s most beautiful natural attractions. People come from far and wide to swim in crystal clear water at the nearby Ningaloo Marine Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features a diverse array of marine life such as turtles, whale sharks, manta rays, and hundreds of species of fish.
Back on land at the Cape Range National Park, you can spot kangaroos, wallabies and more, while hiking through stunning natural scenery such as semi-arid landscapes of limestone and sandstone, deep canyons, and gorges, including the breathtaking Yardie Creek Gorge. Beyond the surrounding nature, Exmouth has a lot to offer visitors including a wide range of locavore restaurants, colourful bars, and a beach where you can take a quick swim to cool down on a hot day or bask in a colourful sunset.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Exmouth
Exmouth is a popular tourist destination all year long. In summer, it gets hot during the day, but this is when marine life is most active at the Ningaloo Reef. However, accommodations in Exmouth may be a bit more limited during the summer, so it is a good idea to book early. Conversely, it can get chilly during the winter, which may not be ideal if you are interested in spending a lot of time in the water, but this is the best time of year for whale watching. During the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn, you can enjoy more temperate weather while exploring the area through local canal and marina events. Whale sharks can be found in the area from mid-March until late-July.
Top things to do in Exmouth
Ningaloo marine park.
Located within the Cape Range National Park, the Ningaloo Marine Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its name stems from the Aboriginal language, Wajarri, and means “deep water.” This headland is home to many powder-white beaches with turquoise water where you can access the renowned Ningaloo Reef. The reef is home to more than 500 different species of marine life. You can also kayak, surf and swim.
Cape Range National Park
Running alongside the Ningaloo Marine Park is Cape Range National Park, featuring rugged scenery, white sand beaches, and native wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, and emus. Here, you will find breathtaking gorges full of tranquil water, and dramatic limestone cliffs with hiking trails criss-crossing their way through the park’s interior. The sparkling blue water of the beaches contrasts sharply with the rust-colored landscape creating a striking scene.
Vlamingh Head Lighthouse
This lighthouse is just a 15-minute drive from the Exmouth town centre and offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, Ningaloo Reef, and Cape Range National Park. It’s also one of the few spots in Australia where you witness both sunrise and sunset over the horizon. Boasting more than 100 years of history, the lighthouse offers many educational panels and is neighbored by a World War II radar station. If you happen to visit in the winter, remember to bring a set of binoculars to see the migrating humpback whales.

Have you ever wanted to swim with some of nature’s giants – humpback whales and the graceful whale sharks?
On Australia’s Coral Coast at the northern end of the Ningaloo Coast, you can experience both with tours from Exmouth and nearby Coral Bay.
Exmouth, 1,270km north of Perth , lies at the northern edge of the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast – a 300km stretch of pristine coral reefs, many tantalising close to the shores, that are home to beautiful coral gardens, tropical fish and annual visits by the gentle giants of the sea – whale sharks . Tours offering the chance to swim with these magnificent marine creatures operate between mid-March to August from Exmouth while tours to swim with humpbacks operate between July and August.
Exmouth is a relatively young community, established in 1967 for the Harold E. Holt US Naval Communication Station North West Cape. A cluster of towers including one reaching a staggering 387m high, provide a VLF radio transmissions for US Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarines, echoing the time when this region was a refuelling base for Allied submarines during World War II.
Exmouth’s visitor attractions include Indigenous, European and military history. The name ‘Ningaloo’ means ‘land jutting out to sea’ from the local Yinigudura people. Midden heaps, ancient campfires and a beaded necklace dating back 32,000 years discovered at Mandu Mandu Gorge Rock Shelter are some of the local Indigenous artefacts.20 th century histories include Vlamingh Head Lighthouse and the military memorials to the Krait and Potshot operations.
The Cape Range National Park on the North West Cape includes deep canyons carved by the constant action of water and stark, rugged limestone cliffs. Sunrise is best for stunning views of Charles Knife and Shothole Canyon from Charles Knife Gorge Road while walking tracks lead through the canyons. Other sights include the wreck of the SS Mildura, Vlamingh Head Lighthouse lookout and boat tours on Yardie Creek gorge to the southwest of Exmouth containing the only permanent water in the Cape Range.
Exmouth and Coral Bay to the south, are the two holiday locations with accommodation and services for visitors and the embarkation points for a range of tours, diving charters, encounter experiences, fishing charters, glass bottom boat tours and more.

A welcoming and friendly hotel. Very well located with stunning views of the beach and bay from sea view rooms. Room (308) was very spacious and clean, with a large comfortable bed and generously sized bathroom. Only negative was the shower was quite feeble with limited water pressure, probably because of being on the top floor. The restaurant at the hotel was outstanding, offering a wide selection of dishes, all of which were beautifully prepared and cooked to perfection (and we’re very fussy about restaurants!). We found the food at the hotel much better than at the limited range of not very good local restaurants. Beware the Chinese in the central square! Breakfast also great with a wide choice to suit all tastes. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The general furnishings are all in good condition, if a little dated in style. It’s an old hotel (1810) and showing a little wear and tear in places but it has a lovely old world charm which we thoroughly enjoyed.
For SWCP walkers it is on the path, just after the ferry crossing. Friendly hosts. Clean facilities.
We had a lovely stay at this hotel and would return without hesitation, we recommend it

Have you booked accommodation? We use Booking.com for most accommodation bookings as they offer free cancellation on many properties and have a price match guarantee. We book through Stayz (part of VRBO) for private accommodation as we find it is often cheaper than Airbnb. Tip : Accommodation gets booked quickly, especially during the WA school holidays . To avoid disappointment, book early.
Exmouth offers a range of accommodation, including resorts, private rentals, motel-style rooms and camping sites.
Here is my pick of the accommodation in Exmouth WA:
For a detailed breakdown, see this guide on the best accommodation in Exmouth .
TIP : Peak season in Exmouth (usually March to November) will see Exmouth accommodation at capacity and you will find most accommodation is booked up at least a year in advance, especially during school holidays. Therefore, book as soon as possible.
Exmouth Restaurants and Take-Aways
It can be expensive to eat out in Exmouth, but try the woodfired pizzas at the Whalebone Brewing Co . Or visit Whalers Restaurant , in the Exmouth Escape Resort, for delicious food (sit outside).
We didn’t eat at the Froth Craft Brewery in town, but the beers were great and the venue had a fun atmosphere.
If you have kitchen facilities and don’t mind cooking, buy some fish at the Fresh Fish Shack . This family-owned business has some of the freshest and tastiest fish we’ve ever had. It was so good that we bought fish from there three times during our stay in Exmouth.
On our last morning we wanted to find the Exmouth bakery for our tradition of a sausage roll when leaving a place. Ningaloo Bakehouse & Café didn’t disappoint with delicious sausage roll and jam donut
Visit The Social Society for nutritious vegan and vegetarian food, delicious coffee, and healthy fresh pressed juices. You can also buy eco friendly skincare, clothes, and artwork. I love their philosophy and dedication in trying to help save our beautiful planet.

Exmouth Travel Tips
- Collecting flora and fauna (including shells and corals) is not permitted anywhere in the marine park. This includes most of Exmouth beaches.
- Be careful of the coral when diving or snorkelling. Living coral is delicate and, once damaged, it often takes years to grow back, so do not stand on the coral.
- Mobile phone reception is good in town but may drop out elsewhere. We found the lighthouse to have the best reception!
- If you’re visiting in winter, bring a sharkskin top or wetsuit to keep you warm in the water.
- Bring shoes with good grip for hiking.
Exmouth or Coral Bay?
Coral Bay is best if you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday and want to be close to Ningaloo Reef. All accommodation is close to Bill’s Bay, enabling you to snorkel off the beach to the reef. You can read more about it and things to do in Coral Bay here .
Exmouth is great for those that want other things to do, like hiking and surfing. This town has more accommodation choices and places to eat. It also has a younger crowd with backpackers and couples experiencing the van life.
Or do as we did and see them both! Then you can make up your own mind which is best.
Exmouth or Broome?
You can’t make me decide between these two beautiful WA towns! They both offer activities, spectacular scenery, wildlife experiences, and a tropical laid-back vibe. Read our guide on things to do in Broome and see what appeals to you the most. Or you could always return and see the place you missed out on last time!
Is Exmouth Worth Going To: My Thoughts
Exmouth is a long way from Perth but it is absolutely worth going to. In fact, it’s one of the best destinations in Western Australia and should be on your WA bucket list.

Welcome to the Exmouth Guide
Situated at the mouth of the beautiful Exe estuary and at the very beginning of the Jurassic Coast, Exmouth is one of the most picturesque holiday resorts on the south coast. Surrounded by the beautiful Devon countryside, Exmouth is a bustling little town with a vibrant shopping centre that also hosts a wide range of leisure and entertainment facilities , including a cinema, theatre, sports amenities and a range of excellent restaurants.

A brief history of Exmouth
Exmouth occupies a sheltered position on the eastern side of the Exe. Until the eighteenth century it was a small fishing village like many others around the coast. As such it has much to offer.
The place is mainly residential and owing to its position on the estuary there is little through traffic. The main shopping centre is situated around the Strand and the Parade, and here too, buses may be obtained to the neighbouring towns and villages.
Nearby is the Dock, Exmouth’s small harbour, to which used to come ships bringing in timber from Scandinavia. From here pleasure trips can be taken up the River Exe and along the coast, (10 miles past Sidmouth ), eastwards as far as Lyme Regis , and westwards to Torbay. A ferry also runs from Exmouth across the Exe. Sandy Beaches . Eastwards from the Dock stretches two miles of sandy beaches, which are clean and safe when used with reasonable care: any danger spots are indicated by flags.
Further eastwards, Maer Bay and Sandy Bay also offer good pleasant bathing facilities. From the pier as far as Orcombe Point runs the Esplanade and its eastern continuation, Marine Drive, from which extensive views over the sea can be obtained.
