My friend and I booked a tour online beforehand and we got picked up from a different hotel (only certain downtown hotels allow for pickup). Since it was in February, we dressed very warmly. Handwarmers and foot warmers would be advised. They provide headlamps which you can keep as a souvenir as well as snow shoes. Our group had about 12 people in it and we all fit comfortably in their van. The night hike was short and not too strenuous. We saw a waterfall and stopped at various points to gaze at the stars. One good tip for those with iPhones is to change the night mode setting from 3 seconds to 10 seconds in order to allow the photos to develop better. We had hot cocoa while on the trail and were given a packet of maple cookies. Overall, the night hike was a nice way to explore safely at night and view the beauty of nature. It is near Banff and it is very convenient to join the Trip. Standing on Millions of pounds of ice is very humbling. There was only two of us on the trip so Emma was like our personal guide, she was very informative and made it fun, getting us to walk in new untrodden snow and towards the end, to walk in snow with no snowshoes. My husband enjoyed the sliding down the slope while she started getting to make maple taffy and hot chocolate. Definitely recommend it as a trip to get out of the town and do something different. But we arrived at 10:00 am, an hour after the mountain opened. Anyone who wants to take a 4 hour round trip bus ride for a day at Kicking Horse would have been willing to wake up an hour earlier to get there in time to ski a full day. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of animals such as elk, sheep, deer, and bears.

As the sun sets behind the craggy peaks, the wildlife of Banff National Park become more active in the cool hours before dark. This 2-hour animal-spotting safari will lead you at dusk to the hotspots where you are most likely to see Rocky Mountain wildlife. You might spot a sheep grazing in an alpine meadow, an elk meandering across a clearing,  and sometimes even a grizzly bear foraging through a berry bush. 

It is possible to see the following in the park: white tail deer, mule deer, elk, eagles, grizzly bears, black bears, coyotes, wolves, Canadian geese, osprey, ducks, mountain goats, and big horn sheep. Wildlife is spotted 95% of the time on this tour, so this is the best chance to get up close with some of Banff’s wildest residents. Unfortunately, there is a never a guarantee of seeing any animals, but the expert guides do their best to take you to areas they know animals frequent. Along the way you’ll also have the chance to step off the bus to take in the scenic views. Your guide will share details about these amazing creatures and how Banff National Park protects the animals and their natural habitat from many threats to the ecosystem. A stop will be made at an interactive touch table to view rare animal artifacts.

Banff Evening Wildlife Safari

As you travel through Banff and the surrounding area in a comfortable sightseeing vehicle, you will be amazed by the beautiful scenery on this journey.  You will also learn about the ways the wildlife in the area contribute to the rich diversity of Canada’s Premier National Park.  Your knowledgeable guide is trained to seek out all of the park’s most iconic creatures. Big or small, Banff National Park provides a great opportunity to view animals in their natural habitat.   Have your camera ready to capture some amazing photos of the highlights of this informative and entertaining “Discovery Tour”.

Wildlife Viewing

We see wildlife on over 95% of our tours, and often see deer, elk, big horn sheep, bears and birds. Please note that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Interpretation and Education

View rare animal props and artifacts as your guide shares information on the local animals, safe wildlife watching practices and the importance of wildlife management in Banff National Park.

HOW LONG IS THE TOUR?

While the starting time varies depending on the sunset, this is a 2 hour tour.

WHAT DOES THE TOUR INCLUDE?

The two-hour tour includes transportation from most hotels in Banff on a guided bus tour to look for local wildlife.

WHERE IS THE PICK UP AND DROP OFF FROM?

We pick up from most hotels in Banff, and you can select your preferred pick-up location during the booking process. For drop offs, our guide will ask you on the way back where you would like to be dropped off either in town or at your hotel.

HOW CAN I JOIN THIS TOUR IF I'M NOT STAYING IN BANFF?

You are welcome to meet us at any of our pick up locations in Banff to join the tour, and a popular central downtown meeting point is the public bus parking area behind the Mt Royal Hotel (the hotel address is 138 Banff Avenue).

Most guests choose to self-drive into Banff, although please note that you will need to find parking in Banff that exceeds the duration of the tour. Please refer to the  Town of Banff website  for general parking information, or the  banffparking.ca website  for live parking availability. For guests staying in Canmore, you can also use the  Roam bus service  and disembark at the Banff High School. The closest pick up point to the Banff High School is across the road at the Elk and Avenue Hotel.

WHERE DOES THE TOUR GO?

The tour is a paved road tour and there are a number of routes this tour follows, depending on wildlife activity.

IS THERE A LOT OF WALKING INVOLVED?

This is not a walking tour and most of the tour will be spent on the bus, but there are opportunities for you to step off the bus to take in scenic views around Banff. However, when in the presence of the wildlife we do not step off the bus unless the guide believes it is safe.

WHAT ANIMALS CAN YOU SEE?

It is possible to see the following in the park: white tail deer, mule deer, elk, black bears, grizzly bears, chipmunks, eagles, coyotes, wolves, osprey, ducks, Canadian geese, squirrels, big horn sheep, mountain goats. Unfortunately we can never guarantee seeing any animals, but our guides try their best to take you to areas we know animals frequent. CAN WE PAT THE ANIMALS?

No, as all wild animals experience stress when crowded by humans, which is hard on the animal and dangerous for us. Discover Banff Tours adheres strictly to the recommendation set out by Parks Canada for safe wildlife viewing.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

Just your camera and warm clothes, plus any refreshments you may like.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

There is a 24 hour cancellation policy, which allows you to change/cancel or refund your booking up to 24 hours outside your booked tour (up to 7 days for group bookings).

Eli was so knowledgeable and comfortable in his role. I especially have to thank him for finding my Penguins hat on the bus after the tour and dropping it off at my hotel. Over and above, for sure! Answered all of our questions. Had a treat of maple cookies and hot chocolate at the top. Also we were supplied ice cleats for our hike. I do highly recommend this company tour. My friend and I booked a tour online beforehand and we got picked up from a different hotel (only certain downtown hotels allow for pickup). Since it was in February, we dressed very warmly. Handwarmers and foot warmers would be advised. They provide headlamps which you can keep as a souvenir as well as snow shoes. Our group had about 12 people in it and we all fit comfortably in their van. The night hike was short and not too strenuous. We saw a waterfall and stopped at various points to gaze at the stars. One good tip for those with iPhones is to change the night mode setting from 3 seconds to 10 seconds in order to allow the photos to develop better. We had hot cocoa while on the trail and were given a packet of maple cookies. Overall, the night hike was a nice way to explore safely at night and view the beauty of nature. It is near Banff and it is very convenient to join the Trip. Standing on Millions of pounds of ice is very humbling. There was only two of us on the trip so Emma was like our personal guide, she was very informative and made it fun, getting us to walk in new untrodden snow and towards the end, to walk in snow with no snowshoes. My husband enjoyed the sliding down the slope while she started getting to make maple taffy and hot chocolate. Definitely recommend it as a trip to get out of the town and do something different. But we arrived at 10:00 am, an hour after the mountain opened. Anyone who wants to take a 4 hour round trip bus ride for a day at Kicking Horse would have been willing to wake up an hour earlier to get there in time to ski a full day.
