Cape Town Cycle Tour 2022 returns to traditional March date

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is all set for 13 March 2022 with a limited field of 22 500 expected and a pre-race Expo confirmed.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is all set for Sunday, 13 March 2022 with a limited field of 22 500 expected and a pre-race Expo confirmed.

Last year the Cape Town Cycle Tour was postponed to 10 October as a result of Covid restrictions with a limited field of 18 000.

This year organisers have confirmed a larger capacity, but Covid protocols will still apply.

“ After missing out on our traditional March date last year, we are delighted to be back to our usual date in 2022,” event director, David Bellairs said.

“Last year we were oversubscribed with our limited field and glad that we can now expand the entry limit to accommodate more riders in 2022.”

Organisers also confirmed that the traditional pre-race Expo will go ahead this year after being limited in 2021.

The Expo will take place at the Cape Town Stadium as part of the registration process.

Covid protocols will be in place for the Cape Town Cycle Tour

Details of the registration process are still to be announced, but Covid protocols will be in place as was the case in 2021.

“The safety of our riders during registration and the race itself is our top priority,” Bellairs continued.

This year’s event will be the 44th edition.

Here are the 2022 Cape Town Cycle Tour winners!

The victors of the Cape Town Cycle Tour have been crowned — and some folks in the Mother City are still curled up in bed!

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is a 109km marvel that starts and finishes in the shadows of Table Mountain. To safely usher so many cyclists around the route requires precision planning, with cut-offs strictly enforced and sweep vehicles at the ready to pick up those bodies and bikes that can’t be fixed by the on-route mechanical and medical angels.

It’s a fiercely competitive and highly anticipated event that lures in cyclists from around the world. This year, the wet weather proved to be no danger for the best of the best. Here are the winners of the “most beautiful bike race in the world”.

“Despite the inclement conditions this morning just over 17 500 of the 22 500 entrants started,” Cycle Tour Director, David Bellairs said. “It just shows how committed our riders are to supporting the event no matter what the weather.”

22-year-old Marc Pritzen on Team Qhubeka is the 2022, 109 kilometre male champion, making this his first win! With less than ten kilometres to go, it was a battle until the end between Pritzen, Sascha Weber and HB Kruger. Kruger was the favourite to win, but the former SA champ pedalled his way to gold. 

“Winning this race is the dream,” Pritzen beamed. “I’ve won many races in South Africa but this is the biggest one. The weather suited me because I like it when it’s wet. So when I woke up this morning I knew that this was my best chance at winning.”

• Second place: Sascha Weber
• Third place: HB Kruger

Mauritian-born Kim Le Court de Billot on Team Galileo Risk-Infinity brought home gold for the 78 kilometre women’s elite event that started in FishHoek. It was a battle between some of the best! Le Court de Billot took on Candice Lill and Hayley Preen in a fierce sprint finish.

“It was probably my most exciting Cycle Tour yet. I knew, coming into today, that the women’s field was really strong and this Cycle Tour was probably the best one to win,” Le Court De Billot said. “It was also great to win in front of my whole family as well.”

• Third place: Candice Lill

Exhibitor Info

Started thirty-odd years ago in the Camps Bay High School Hall, the Expo has evolved into the country’s largest cycling, health and fitness showcase. As it grew so it changed venue, from sheds in the Cape Town Harbour, to the Good Hope Centre for eighteen years, untill its present home at the Cape Town Stadium. The Expo acts as the only registration venue for the Cape Town Cycle Tour entrants.

How To Book A Stand

• Check out the Expo layout
• Check the stand sales list to see that the space you are after has not been taken
• This list will indicate who has taken what stand, so that you do not land up alongside, or close to, your competitor
• Check the stand prices
• Call or email Eddy at 082 4503151 or [email protected] to discuss your requirements
• Bookings will not be taken until you have chatted to Eddy
• Then you can send the booking form
• Only your booking form will activate the clerical process

It is imperative that you read the exhibitor manual so you can understand what is expected of you. Note that payment dates, as your stand will not be built, unless full payment has been received.

Note that we are introducing a Trade Expo, specific to all things cycling and focussed at wholesalers and importers who cannot sell from their stands. A special rate applies to this area.  The designated area is meant to showcase, cycles, components etc.

As the largest cycling exhibition in the country, which runs alongside the largest timed-cycling event in the southern hemisphere, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo is opening its own trade section within the popular Expo.

Set within the Expo in its own designated area, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trade Show is exactly that. It endeavours to showcase what is available in the cycling industry in South Africa at the present time. It is designed to add value to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and benefit the entrant. After all, the 30 000 entrants are focussed cyclists, who make up a significant, specialised segment of the South African cycling enthusiast market.

From the latest development in cycling tech, bicycles, tools, components or anything that you, as a wholesaler, cannot sell directly to the public, but is of interest to a cyclist, we want you to showcase your product at the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo in its special Trade Show.

And as selling at the Trade Expo is not permitted, the stand pricing for the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trade Expo will be substantially lower than the main Expo. The price of stands is exactly half that of the main Expo. Space is limited, so please do not delay in contacting us timeously.
