Hikaru Sulu (mirror)

  • View history

Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was the security chief , helmsman , and second officer aboard the Terran Empire starship ISS Enterprise , under Captain James T. Kirk . This Sulu had a large scar running from his forehead and down his right cheek, as well as an infatuation with the ship 's communications officer , Lieutenant Uhura .

In 2267 , four crewmembers of the USS Enterprise crossed over into the mirror universe during a transporter malfunction while attempting to transport through an ion storm . In their attempt to escape, it was the mission of Lieutenant Uhura to distract Sulu from his security display, which she was successful in doing.

A fight later broke out in sickbay as the four crewmen approached the final stage of their escape. Sulu arrived with a security squad and had previously warned Spock that if the Vulcan was not able to command the ship, he would take command. Sulu was, in turn, defeated when the " captain's woman ", Marlena Moreau , utilized the Tantalus field against Sulu's posse, allowing the four members of the USS Enterprise to return to their universe . ( TOS : " Mirror, Mirror ")

Like his prime reality counterpart, Sulu was portrayed by George Takei .

Apocrypha [ ]

The mirror Sulu appeared as captain of the mirror universe Excelsior in the video game Star Trek: Shattered Universe . Due to a temporal distortion, the prime universe and mirror universe Excelsior crews switched places, with both sides making their way across the galaxy to another temporal rift in order to return to their own universes.

Another possible fate is revealed in the Star Trek: Mirror Universe novel The Sorrows of Empire , in which he is killed by Spock 's loyalists as a prelude to Spock taking control of the ISS Enterprise .

Hikaru Sulu

In 2290, Sulu assumed command of the starship Excelsior and began a three-year mission charting gaseous anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. Because of this proximity to the Klingon Empire he was instrumental in saving the U.S.S. Enterprise from destruction by dissidents who were out to destroy the Khitomer peace conference.

After a full career he was still on active patrol on the Cardassian border as a captain at age 113 in 2350, where he agreed to sponsor young Chakotay from Dorvan V for Starfleet Academy after befriending the youth.

Sulu was an active hobbyist with interests including fencing, botany, and the martial arts of his native culture; in fact, when the helmsman was infected with the Psi 3000 virus in 2366 he threatened the bridge with his foil. Another of Sulu's hobbies was old-style hand guns, although he had never managed to find a "Police Special" for his collection. He is also an accomplished pilot of craft from many eras and cultures, piloting with little warm-up both an antique 20th century Earth helicopter and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey.

He has a daughter, Demora, who attended Starfleet Academy and served as the first helm officer of the Excelsior-class U.S.S. Enterprise under Capt. John Harriman, when Kirk met his untimely death due to the Nexus Ribbon in 2293.

George Takei

LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 03: Actor George Takei arrives at the premiere of '8' presented by The American Foundation For Equal Rights & Broadway Impact at The Wilshire Ebell Theatre on March 3, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.

Who Is George Takei?

George Takei overcame the racial barriers of his time to launch a successful acting career. He starred as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu during the three-year television run of Star Trek , and later reprised the role for six movies. Prominently involved with gay rights and Japanese American groups, Takei has become a highly popular social-media presence.

Early Years

George Hosato Takei was born on April 20, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. At the age of 5, he and his family were uprooted from their home and forced to live at Japanese internment camps in Arkansas and northern California. They returned to Los Angeles after World War II, and Takei enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley to study architecture.

Stage and Screen

While in college, Takei responded to a newspaper ad looking for Asian voiceover actors for the English version of the Japanese monster movie Rodan (1956). That led to more voiceover work, as well as small parts in television programs such as Perry Mason and the film Ice Palace (1960). Deciding to focus on acting full time, Takei transferred to the University of California Los Angeles, where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in theater.

In 1966, Takei became one of the few Asian Americans to be featured prominently on TV when he starred as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu on the science-fiction series Star Trek. He returned after taking time off during the second season to film The Green Berets (1968), but his role as Sulu was temporarily shelved when Star Trek was canceled in 1969.

Takei continued to make regular TV appearances in the 1970s, on such programs as The Six Million Dollar Man and Hawaii Five-O , while providing the voice of Sulu for the Star Trek animated series. Momentum gathered for the making of the movie, and Takei reunited with the rest of his old castmates for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and five sequels over the next dozen years.

Takei was involved in a project close to his heart when he took on a starring role in Allegiance , a production about the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. The play premiered at San Diego's Old Globe Theater in September 2012.

Public Service and Private Revelations

Takei has remained a busy man away from show business. After narrowly losing his bid for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council in 1973, he joined the board of directors for the Southern California Transit District from 1973 to 1984.

Takei served on the board of the Japan-United States Friendship Commission for President Bill Clinton and was conferred with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan in 2004. He is also chairman emeritus of the Japanese American National Museum's board of trustees and serves as chair of the council of governors of East West Players, a renowned Asian-American theater organization.

In 2005, Takei publicly announced his homosexuality to Frontiers magazine. He married his longtime partner, Brad Altman, in September 2008.

In recent years, Takei has earned a following from a new generation of fans with his funny, incisive posts on Facebook. His expansive social-media presence, along with the 2013 release of Star Trek Into Darkness , has helped keep this accomplished actor and activist in the public eye.

Sulu explains the defining attributes of star trek's original crew.

Mr. Sulu is one part of the most iconic crew in Star Trek history, and now fans get to learn how he sees each of his Enterprise crewmates.

When it comes to Star Trek , most fans give a lot of credit for Starfleet's successes to its iconic captains, but if you ask Mr. Sulu , it's not just the abilities of a starship's captain that win the day. It takes a whole crew of diverse and dedicated people who each contribute something different, both to the mission and the franchise.

The original USS Enterprise, designation NCC-1701 , is the most iconic ship in the history of the United Federation of Planets. Launched in 2245, the ship was first commanded by Captain Robert April, then Christopher Pike, but achieved its iconic status under the leadership of James T. Kirk and his dedicated crew. In that era, the Federation flagship was piloted by Hikaru Sulu, with navigator/operations officer Pavel Andreievich Chekov, communications officer Nyota Uhura, chief engineer Montgomery Scott, chief medical officer Leonard McCoy, and chief science officer and first officer Spock. Each member of the senior staff brought with them a range of talents and skills to the bridge of the Enterprise , all of which served Captain Kirk and the Federation exceptionally well.

Related: Star Trek Confirms the One Species Even Vulcans Find Impressive

In the story " Captain's Log ," by Chris Eliopoulos and Luke Sparrow from IDW Publishing's Star Trek #400 , readers are given a narration by Sulu on his thoughts on leaving the Enterprise for his own command. He goes over what makes Starfleet great, and calls out the chief characteristic of each iconic member of the original crew. Obviously, Kirk's is leadership, Spock's is logic, and McCoy's is humanity. Meanwhile, he credits Scotty for being a miracle worker , Uhura for her listening skills, Chekov for his belief in himself, and Sulu's own piloting skills. The most important aspect highlighted is the idea of diversity, which is embodied in the Vulcan symbol of IDIC, or Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.

Star Trek's Strength is Diversity

Sulu's summary of his friends and allies is a perfect representation of not only the crew of the original Enterprise , but also of the theme of Star Trek in general. At the time of its debut in 1966, the cast was groundbreaking. It gave starring credits to an African American woman and a Japanese American man, and it portrayed a future where someone with a thick Russian accent was considered one of the good guys. At the height of the Cold War, that alone was enough to be shocking to some viewers, and that is before Star Trek 's alien officer , Spock, who some viewers claimed looked like the devil. However, the diversity of the crew and the TV show became one of its greatest strengths, depicting a utopian society where humanity had learned to live and work peacefully together.

Star Trek #400 is a collection of stories spanning the different shows and eras, and this story is not only cool because it revisits some of the classic Star Trek episodes of the original series , but also because it gives readers a chance to see the conceptual idea of what each of these iconic Starfleet officers add to the mix. Star Trek is one of the most enduring and iconic franchises in pop culture, and here fans are given confirmation by Mr. Sulu that diversity is the main reason for that success.

The Off-Screen Drama That Changed Sulu From Star Trek Forever

George Takei as Hulu on Star Trek

Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" franchise is set in a more enlightened futuristic universe, where the Vulcan philosophy of infinite diversity in infinite combinations is the order of the day (per StarTrek.com ). And while that doesn't mean everyone gets along all the time, it does mean that the series as a whole champions tolerance, faith in humanity, and hope for progress.

Unfortunately, "Star Trek" actors live in the present day, instead of the future, which means that the drama that happens behind-the-scenes can be a bit pettier than the conflicts that the characters experience on the screen.

In particular, there's one off-screen drama that affected George Takei, known to fans not only as Lt. Sulu (and as Captain Hikaru Sulu in later movies), but as a prolific performer, author, viral social media star, political activist and more. The 84-year-old Japanese actor has led an incredibly full life, which included time in a U.S. internment camp as a child and the receipt of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . Yet he did experienced drama on the set of the original "Star Trek" that influenced his life to such a degree he still talks about it today in front of audiences today.

Takei fanned the flames in his autobiography from 1994

The drama comes in the form of what the media calls a long-running feud between Captain Kirk actor William Shatner and George Takei, two actors whom have spent plenty of time in the same spaces ever since the original "Star Trek" went off the air in 1969 because of its enduring popularity, including press events and conventions.

Their public statements about one another appear to have started with Takei's 1994 autobiography, "To the Stars," in which he described Shatner on his the first day on the set as having "radiated energy and a boundless joy in his position." Takei wrote, "He beamed out an infectious, expansively joyous life force." However, he wasn't as kind to the star of the show after that, noting that Shatner ended up with many of the good lines intended for other cast members, and this expression of ego and insecurity continued even when the series was resurrected for Paramount's first "Star Trek" film.

For the second film, Takei began negotiating with producers to advance Sulu in rank. A scene in "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" was to have Kirk informing Sulu that he was now commander of the U.S.S. Excelsior. However, Takei says in the book, Shatner played the scene so disinterestedly that it was cut from the film as unusable. As a result, Sulu did not become captain of his own vessel until "Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country."

The feud heats up with Shatner minimizing Takei's role in Star Trek

In 2008, Shatner was asked if he felt snubbed by not being invited to Takei's September wedding to Brad Altman. "Well, the whole thing makes me feel badly," the actor said, via The Official William Shatner Page . "Poor man. There's such a sickness there. It's so patently obvious that there's a psychosis there." However, Takei responded to the situation in  People Magazine , saying he did in fact invite Shatner to the wedding but did not hear back. "But it wasn't surprising because it's true to his history. He's never responded to an invitation. Every time there was something happy to celebrate amongst us ... he never showed up," Takei said.

In 2020, Shatner posted this tweet in response to a Twitter inquiry pointing out that the other actor was not much more than a "day player," on set one or two days a week. Shatner posted, "Do the math. That's why I don't know him. He was on set maybe 3 weeks total per year. That's why I say he has all of these fake stories from the set; when did he have time to act?"

Shatner reportedly covered the feud in his own memoir, "Shatner Rules," from 2011, in which he said Takei's dislike of him came from an unwillingness to play second fiddle (per The Los Angeles Times ). A set of handwritten notes that went for auction in 2016 also indicated that Shatner did not make an effort to pay much attention to his co-star ( via Express ).

Despite the negativity, both remain cultural icons to Star Trek fans

Takei has addressed Shatner's minimization of his role in "Star Trek." In 2021, he told Howard Stern , "It is so patently unbelievable ... That is purely fiction of his mind. Or, maybe it is his truth."

Whatever the truth, both actors continue to rehash the situation with fans at conventions, over social media and at events and interviews. In October 2021, Shatner went to the edge of space in Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin capsule. This event led Takei to remark as he spoke at the New York opening of "Thoughts of a Colored Man" ( per Page Six ), "He's boldly going where other people have gone before." Takei called Shatner a "guinea pig" who is "not the fittest specimen of 90 years old."

At Star Trek: Mission Chicago, a new convention in which both appeared on April 8-10, 2022, Takei brought the topic up again, saying that he felt Shatner always purposefully butchered his name. He referenced a Comedy Central roast of the actor, in which he reminded Shatner that "Takei" rhymes with "toupee" — something Shatner is rumored to have worn for years. Some have taken sides in the battle, with Shatner's supporters saying all the negativity comes from Takei.

However, it is clear that many fans believe that both are worthy of their titles as "cultural icons," as one commenter on YouTube called them, and that it's a shame that the relationship has badly affected both their lives.

Star Trek's George Takei pens children's book detailing childhood in World War II internment camps

"My Lost Freedom," is an autobiographical account of his experience as a child.

George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" series, details his experience growing up in Japanese-American internment camps during World War II in his new book.

Takei's children's book, "My Lost Freedom," is an autobiographical account of his experience as a 5-year-old in a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. The book aims to reach children and their parents.

The book recounts Takei's time as a child in a Japanese internment camp in Rohwer, Arkansas, a dark chapter in American history.

"I remember the terror, the confusion, the chaos of being moved constantly from one place to another, one strange part of the country to another," Takei told ABC News Live. "And so that's my real memory that I have. But I didn't understand what that was all about."

ABC News Live interviewed Takei about his new book, which pays tribute to his parents.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Many of you know him best as Hikaru Sulu from the Star Trek series, but his journey extends far beyond the stars. His new book, "My Lost Freedom," details his experience growing up in Japanese-American internment camps during World War II.

Joining us now is a true legend, actor, activist, social justice icon George Takei. Sir, thanks so much for joining us.

GEORGE TAKEI: Good to be here, appreciate it.

ABC NEWS LIVE: You're teaching us things already, not just in this book. This book details a really, you know, a dark chapter, in this country's history and in your own personal history. Why did you want to tackle it in a children's book?

TAKEI: Well, I was a child then. I was 5 years old, and I wanted to share, share this story, as an autobiography that was published in 1994. I did also a graphic memoir because I wanted to reach teenagers and, as a teenager, I loved comic books. So I told the same story as, from the vantage point of a teenager, to reach them. But with this one book, "My Lost Freedom," I'm reaching for two generations. The parents and their kiddies.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Absolutely. Because it's not just the kids reading it, it's the adults reading it to the children and having a conversation.

TAKEI: Exactly.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Opening up a conversation. I'm wondering, I know you wrote about it. You know, in the book that came out in 1994. And this is a different way of talking about it. Is it painful to relive this period or is it cathartic? Therapeutic in a way.

TAKEI: I think for my parents, the greatest pain was felt. I was 5 years old. Four years, five, six, seven, eight, four years of my life, in imprisonment. My brother was a year younger than me. And our baby sister went in as an infant. And so the first four years of her life was behind those barbed wire fences.

ABC NEWS LIVE: How did your family keep hope going?

TAKEI: So I remember the terror, the confusion, the chaos of being moved constantly from one place to another, one strange part of the country to another. And so that's my real memory that I have. But I didn't understand what that was all about. And as a teenager, out of camp and a few years having elapsed, I was very curious about my childhood imprisonment, and I went to libraries to look for books on it. Couldn't find a thing.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Do you think it had anything to do with you growing up, you know, having the career you had, but being the activist that you have turned into. Do you think it shaped you in that way?

TAKEI: Well, as I said, those after-dinner conversations that I had with my father, he said, and he loved quoting from the Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln's historic speech: "Ours is a government of the people, by the people and for the people." He said, "those are noble words. That's what makes American democracy so singular." But those words are also the weakness of American democracy because it's a people's democracy and people are fallible human beings, and they get swept up by the hysteria of the time and by racism and the president is also a human being. His other were tens of thousands of people that look just like the people that bombed Pearl Harbor. Living on the West Coast.

ABC NEWS LIVE: That weren't those people.

TAKEI: And he signed an executive order ordering all Japanese-Americans on the West Coast to be rounded up with no charge, no trial, no due process, in the most un-American way to be. Rounded up and imprisoned in barbed wire prison camps in some of the most hellish places and most desolate places in the country.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Yeah, it was a, it was a hugely dark time in this country's history. And to be able to put it in a book like this, to not only teach children, but the adults who are reading it to them, is really spectacular thing.

TAKEI: Well, I had to simplify it.

ABC NEWS LIVE: Absolutely

TAKEI: We don't deal with the loyalty question.

ABC NEWS LIVE: George, thank you so much; we so appreciate you coming in. You can purchase "My Lost Freedom" wherever books are sold

Coffee Table Book On The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Makeup Artistry Of Glenn Hetrick Coming In September

It’s amazing how many LGBT people are on Star Trek now. Love it.

Yeah, but unfortunately, the cover is missing the very first one: Jadzia Dax.

The cover is “missing” a character that doesn’t seem to be appearing in the comic? I don’t think it’s a problem NOT to falsely advertise her appearance. I’m hopeful they’ll do more of these in the future and include her.

Great art all around! Looking forward to it.

I know I shouldn’t be objectifying shirtless cartoon Sulu, but holy.

Yeah, they made him look ripped.

George looked like that in the original ep ‘naked time’

One can appreciate without objectification. We know he’s a upstanding officer and husband, he can be fit as well ;)

Happy birthday to O G ‘hikaru sulu’

So excited for this I preordered the regular cover and the variant with Mariner and Jennifer ! I hope they do this again next year. I love the DC Pride collection that comes out every year and the Star Wars Pride covers… Love to see Trek continue to expand this kind of anthology and include more characters as well (like Jadzia Dax.)
