‘It's Been a Magical Place for Me': Elton John's Final Tour Revisits LA Glory

Elton John’s audacious 1970 U.S. debut at a Los Angeles nightclub moved a critic to declare that the slight young Englishman would become one of rock's most important stars. It didn't take long.

Within five years, his reputation cemented by a string of hits including “Rocket Man” and “Daniel,” fans packed LA's Dodger Stadium for two rousing, sequin-bedecked concerts. This weekend, John will close out the North American leg of his last tour at the ballpark.

He calls it the right choice.

“I started off in Los Angeles at the Troubadour (club), and I want it to end here because it’s been a magical place for me,” John said in an Associated Press interview. The three-night stand is Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17, 19 and 20.

The final L.A. concert will be  streamed live on Disney+  starting at 11 p.m. EST Sunday. The three-hour event will open with “Countdown to Elton Live," which includes an interview with John and celebrity shout-outs.

John promised more bell and whistles than at the tour's other concerts — but hopefully without “any elephants or giraffes coming on stage,” he said, a wry reference to “The Lion King.”  The Tony-winning hit musical with songs by John and Tim Rice marks  its 25th anniversary on Broadway  this month.

The stadium stage is "enormous and fantastic. The videos are wonderful. I like to be surprised, so I will be surprised,” John said.

His influence “spans generations, making this last North American stop on his farewell tour one for the record books,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.

The rock ‘n’ roll giant's enduring body of work includes “Your Song," “Tiny Dancer” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” He's earned six Grammy Awards, including a Legend Award, and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His record sales worldwide have surpassed 300 million.

John is reaching new audiences through hit-making collaborations with younger artists, including Britney Spears (  “Hold Me Closer,”  an update of “Tiny Dancer”) and Dua Lipa  (“Cold Heart”) .

Lipa, Kiki Dee and Brandi Carlile will join him on stage Sunday, and it's no coincidence that all are women. He's had rewarding creative relationships with female artists, he said, and the three are “very important singers in my life.”

He and Dee had a 1976 hit with the bouncy  “Don't Go Breaking My Heart"  and she was with him at his first L.A. stadium show. John is close to Carlile, who joined him for  “Simple Things”  on his 2021 “The Lockdown Sessions” album, and their families vacation together. It's a big week for Carlile, who  earned seven Grammy nods  Tuesday.

As for Lipa, “I love her dearly,” John said. He credits their “Cold Heart” single with giving his career a boost and “launching me into a different stratosphere as far as streaming goes and connecting with young people.”

“I feel modern. I feel elated with working. When you work with a different artist, you always learn something from them, and that’s the whole point,” he said. His collaboration with Spears, which was suggested by his husband, David Furnish, yielded that and something more.

“It was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again," John said. “To see that (single) become a success makes me feel so happy, that she’s hopefully feeling the love from those people.”

The  Farewell Yellow Brick Road  tour began in September 2018 in Pennsylvania with the first of the 300-plus dates scheduled worldwide. It was suspended in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic and resumed in 2021 in New Orleans.

In January, John heads to Australia and New Zealand, then moves on to Britain and Europe. The tour is set to conclude in Sweden next July.

The schedule would be demanding for any artist, but a genial, healthy-looking Elton showed no sign of strain in an interview last week, a few hours before a San Diego concert. Reviews have noted his vitality: “His unmistakable baritone sounds as mighty and resonant as ever, and his energy at the ivories remains positively infectious,”  Billboard magazine  said of his New Jersey stadium show last July.

“I'm not tired," John told AP. “The audiences are absolutely amazing. They dress up, it’s like a big party. And so rather than seeing it as a chore ... I’m going on stage every night thinking, ‘What are they going to be wearing tonight? What’s going to be the reaction tonight?’ At the stage of my career, it’s just an astonishingly rewarding thing to happen.”

He was a tender 23 when Robert Hilburn, the then-Los Angeles Times music critic,  predicted John’s stardom  after the Troubadour appearance in West Hollywood. Hilburn said John's performance that August night “was, in almost every way, magnificent” and called his songs (written with lyricist Bernie Taupin) “staggeringly original.”

Success followed success. While John describes the 1975 stadium concerts as the pinnacle of his career at that time, he wasn’t in the “happiest place.” He recalled a dark period of instability (dramatized in the  2019 biopic “Rocketman”)  that included a pill overdose three days ahead of the shows.

Such turmoil is far removed from his life now, which includes his two sons with Furnish.

“I’m happy, I’m contented,” said John, who’s in his third decade of sobriety. “I have a wonderful husband, a great family, I have great friends, a wonderful career. I’ve everything that any person could ever want in their life. I’ve never been as happy personally than I am now, at 75 years of age.”

“If I hadn’t got sober, I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have had the wonderful things that have happened to me since,” he said.

A prominent activist, he's shared his name and good fortune. He created the  Elton John AIDS Foundation,  which reports raising more than $500 million. In 2019, President Emmanuel Macron gave France’s highest award to John for his contributions to the arts and efforts to fight HIV/AIDS around the world.

Is the Yellow Brick Road tour really goodbye? “It is definitely the farewell tour,” he said, although a short-term residency, such as Kate Bush's three weeks at London's Hammersmith Apollo in 2014, has its appeal.

“But to be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I'll be looking forward to taking a breather,” he said. Then it's back to work on projects already in progress, including “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.”

That's for starters.

“I'll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything,” John said. “But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”

Emotional Elton John bids America farewell from Dodger Stadium: 'Be kind to each other'

elton john farewell tour los angeles

LOS ANGELES – The sun has gone down on Elton John's  final North American show in the place where it all began: Dodger Stadium .

"Tonight is a very special night, a very emotional night for me," said John, wearing a bedazzled jacket with tails and sunglasses, after playing "Philadelphia Freedom" on a grand piano. "It's been a long journey."

John, 75, closed out his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour  in North America on Sunday, a goodbye made even more poignant since Dodger Stadium was the famed setting for John's 1975 breakout stadium concerts.

More than 47 years ago, John's two electrifying, sequin-outfit-filled concerts at the historic baseball stadium affirmed the rising star's supernova status.

Ranked:  The 25 best Elton John songs of all time

"Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium" was  livestreamed on Disney+ .

"We are making history tonight, the first-ever global stream on Disney+," John said. "And hello Dodger Stadium!"

Still recovering from a hip injury that forced the tour's postponement in September 2021, John did not move across the stage with ease, much less jump atop his piano as he did in 1975.

But his piano-pounding numbers haven't lost a step as he showed with an extended riff at the end of "Levon." After finishing the song, John slumped over the piano in (possibly) exaggerated exhaustion, only to jump back to his feet to urge more applause.

The departing superstar had help from musical guests. Brandi Carlile  sang the George Michael role alongside John for "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." Holding a gold microphone, Carlile never lost her giddy expression. British singer Kiki Dee, joined John to sing their classic duet " Don't Go Breaking My Heart ," nearly five decades after the two performed the same number.

"We decide to reenact that incredible moment," John said.

Dua Lipa and John sang their hit remix "Cold Heart" (the same night the song won an American Music Award for best collaboration).

A cadre of Hollywood stars attended, some walking a pre-concert red carpet, including JoJo Siwa (wearing a "Rocketman" devil suit),   Heidi Klum , Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance , Kirsten Dunst, John Stamos , Connie Britton and "Top Gun: Maverick" star Miles Teller. Jude Law, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Neil Patrick Harris were in the audience.

Britney Spears , who recently collaborated with John on the single "Hold Me Closer," did not make an appearance.

For his encore, John returned to the stage in an outfit that harked back to his classic sparkling (and snug) 1975 Dodgers baseball uniform. The 2022 version was a full silver-shimmering Dodgers robe with the number "1" on the back. Bob Mackie recreated the classic blue baseball cap to finish the throwback look.

John brought his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, on stage.

"If it wasn't for him I would not be standing here," he said, before calling for his family to join him.

"I want to spend time with my family; I'll be 76 by the time I stop touring next year," said John, as his partner, David Furnish, brought out their sons, Zachary, 11, and Elijah, 9. "I want to bring them out here to show you exactly why I'm retiring."

The superstar, whose career was originally propelled by Los Angeles crowds, thanked the local audience for the pivotal support.

"You made me. Without America, I wouldn't be here," he said. "Thank you for all the years of love and generosity. I wish you health and love and prosperity."

John ended the show with his classic "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." At the song's end, he discarded his silver robe to reveal a tracksuit and stepped onto a lift that raised him up the stage. An animated John was shown on stage screens walking onto a heavenly Yellow Brick Road.

"Be kind to each other," John added. "And farewell."

Elton John Plays Final US Concert: Images, Set List

Elton John  has played his final U.S. concert, delivering a rousing farewell set at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Over the corse of more than two and half hours, the music legend performed many of his most beloved tracks. The night opened with the classic 1974 chart-topping single "Bennie and the Jets," before then rolling into an emphatic rendition of "Philadelphia Freedom." "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" were among the further highlights in a set that was full of them (complete set list can be found below).

Throughout the concert, Elton made reference to the historical significance of the night and his long relationship with Los Angeles. The singer mentioned that his  first performance on American shores took place at the Troubadour in West Hollywood . Five years later, he’d play a pari of sold-out performances at Dodger Stadium , the legendary gigs ranking among the most famous of his career.

Several celebrity friends joined Elton for his final American performance. Singer Brandi Carlile came out to duet on "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," while Kiki Dee later joined John in the duo's classic duet, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

After a brief pause, Elton returned for an encore, donning an outfit reminiscent of his famous sequined Dodgers ensemble from 1975. He welcomed pop star Dua Lipa to perform with him on "Cold Heart," the chart-topping hit from last year. Long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin was later brought onstage, much to the delight of the crowd.

As the performance was coming to a close, Elton spoke eloquently about his decision to retire from the road.

“I’m stopping touring, and this will be my last concert in America and Canada," the singer confessed. "And the reason why I’m [done] touring, I think you know, is because I want to spend time with my family. So, I want to bring them out and show you why I’m retiring: David, Zachary and Elijah.” At this point John's husband, David Furnish, and the couple's two sons came on stage, once again eliciting a roar from the crowd.

Elton then gave a heartfelt thanks to his U.S. fans.

"I became successful first in America," the rocker noted, while expressing his gratitude to everyone who purchased his music and attended his concerts. "So I want to thank you for that. You made me. Without America, I wouldn’t be here.”

Before playing his final song of the night, the rock icon delivered one parting message: “I wish you health, and love, prosperity. Be kind to each other. And farewell.”

Elton John performs at Dodger Stadium to wrap U.S. leg of farewell tour

Amy Powell Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It was a night to remember for Elton John fans as the singer-songwriter performed a lively and emotional set at Dodger Stadium to wrap up the U.S. leg of what is expected to be his final tour.

Los Angeles holds a special place in John's heart, as his 1975 performances at the ballpark - in a sequined Dodgers uniform - were considered one of the most iconic shows of his early career.

Sunday he performed in a glittering Dodger-themed robe that was a callback to that original outfit.

John, 75, has said he plans to retire from performing at the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. After wrapping up in Los Angeles, he'll perform in Australia and New Zealand early next year to conclude the tour.

The crowd - and the stage itself - were filled with celebrities. John called Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlile to perform with him.

Carlile says Elton John has been an inspiration to her since childhood.

"It's so amazing," Carlile said. "It's a first time for me and a last time, of sorts, for him and it feels mystical."

Elton John has a long list of hits and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Some of his most memorable songs include "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle in the Wind" and many, many others.

He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1988 in recognition not only of his artistic contributions but his charitable work.

The Dodger Stadium performance will be available to stream on Disney+.

Popular on Variety

John’s show Thursday didn’t have any of the guests that are lined up for Sunday night’s tour finale, which will be streamed live on Disney+ . The mystery remains unsolved as to what Brandi Carlile will join him for that night, although the world can presume that Kiki Dee’s billing means “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart” will finally be added back into the set, and that Dua Lipa’s presence will not have John alone and singing to an otherwise pre-existing track of “Cold Heart,” as he did Thursday. Although the opening-night crowd might have had a tinge of FOMO without any of those promised cameos being spread across all three nights, even the most straightforward rendering of the tour didn’t suffer for starpower — at least not for any of the fans who consider longtime band mainstays like guitarist/MD Davey Johnston, percussionist Ray Cooper and drummer Nigel Olsson stars in their own right. This is a slightly misty, mostly joyful wave bye-bye to one of the great bands of the 20th and 21st centuries, along with one of the greatest singular entertainers.

Some of us could confess a slight sense of disappointment upon first taking a look at this tour’s pretty set-in-stone setlist, having seen that it only contains one really deep track — “Have Mercy on the Criminal,” a “Don’t Shoot Me” non-hit that he’s performed a mere 300-some times in his career? John loves to engage fans in some of the more obscure depths of his discography (see the “Jewel Box” collection that came out a couple years ago), but on disc, not at the expense of denying more casual fans too much of anything they came for. (Full-album “Honky Chateau” anniversary tours and other fantasies we might’ve entertained were never Captain Fantastic’s bag.)

But once the 115 minutes get underway, any regrets about Side 2 openers left unplayed immediately go by the wayside. You thought, due to 50 years of incrementally increasing overexposure, that you never needed to hear “Tiny Dancer” again. Actually, you do — that, and pretty much all of the mostly extremely familiar 23 songs in this show, each ripe for a refreshed sense of discovering when you hear them played by this band , through an awfully-good-for-a-stadium-rig setup, where just about every selection seems impressively tight in one sense and even more impressively loose in another, in roughly equal aural-kismet measure.

Even then, it’s most of all John’s rhythm playing that is so robust and free-flowing on the faster songs, you’re straining to remember whether all those magnificent notes were on the records or he’s improvising between the cracks, until you let all that analysis go and settle into grooves that are much funkier than you remember them being. That is an operative word here, and one we don’t much associate with classic-rock stadium shows: funky funky funky funky funky. (It’s hard to overstate it.) Throughout his master-class playing, John sounds like the classically trainer pianist who has somehow been enjoined to perform at a New Orleans funeral for a friend. Vocally, meanwhile, there’s no wear and tear to be heard; he’s in too prime a form for anyone apart from his own family to be happy he’s stepping aside to be a homebody.

At some point amid this nonstop entertainment, you may pause to think — but probably won’t — about how unusual all of this is, among the ’70s-based AM/FM rock catalog. Jerry Lee Lewis’s face pops up in a visual montage of musical or cultural heroes during “Border Song,” and it raises the question: How is it that the magic of Lewis and John, separately or collectively, never did inspire hundreds of millions of kids to take up rock ‘n’ roll piano, the way their guitar contemporaries did? It’s a mystery, but all the better for maintaining Elton’s singular legend on the keyboards over a half-century, maybe. Similarly: Have there been any other songwriting teams in rock that had a strict lyrics/music separation like John and Bernie Taupin — and where the non-lyric-writing partner was up front and making you believe that every strange couplet was coming directly from his own heart? With the occasional straightforward exceptions, a lot of these songs don’t get nearly enough credit for being as weird as they are, so long have we accepted them as commercial blockbusters.

Even the “sugar bear” part of “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” — which John introduced as his favorite song off his favorite album of his — is a little bit odd or eccentric, if you stop to think about it. But no one is thinking about the songwriting’s sweet peculiarities in this massive setting, just about how emotional the song feels as some kind of shared exhalation, brought to further live life with a touch of the Beach Boys in the ensemble’s stacked harmonies, Cooper rocking the tubular bells and tympani, and Elton adding licks right before the song kicks into its coda that manage to make a grand piano sound just a little grander.

We won’t experience the likes of anything quite like this again after he’s gone… which is not a totally pressing concern, as John as indicated that he is open to residencies or one-off shows, on top of composing and recording; it’s just touring life he’s abandoning. There’s no doubt he means this is a serious goodbye to all that — wouldn’t you, at 75? — but this is still a case where you could hope the retiree is pulling a fake-out Sinatra or a Cher or a Motley Crue on us and coming back in a couple years. Maybe graduating to a Dodgers-branded crown.

The Disney+ livestream of the North American tour finale goes out live Sunday night at 11 p.m. ET/8 PT.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Elton John’s audacious 1970 U.S. debut at a local nightclub moved a critic to declare that the slight young Englishman would become one of rock’s most important stars. It didn’t take long.

Within five years, his reputation cemented by a string of hits including “Rocket Man” and “Daniel,” fans packed L.A.'s Dodger Stadium for two rousing, sequin-bedecked concerts.

EST Sunday. The three-hour event will open with “Countdown to Elton Live,” which includes an interview with John and celebrity shout-outs.

John promised more bell and whistles than at the tour’s other concerts — but hopefully without “any elephants or giraffes coming on stage,” he said, a wry reference to “The Lion King.” The Tony-winning hit musical with songs by John and Tim Rice marks its 25th anniversary on Broadway this month.

The stadium stage is “enormous and fantastic. The videos are wonderful. I like to be surprised, so I will be surprised,” John said.

His influence “spans generations, making this last North American stop on his farewell tour one for the record books,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.

The rock ‘n’ roll giant’s enduring body of work includes “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” He’s earned six Grammy Awards, including a Legend Award, and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His record sales worldwide have surpassed 300 million.

John is reaching new audiences through hit-making collaborations with younger artists, including Britney Spears ( “Hold Me Closer,” an update of “Tiny Dancer”) and Dua Lipa (“Cold Heart”) .

Lipa, Kiki Dee and Brandi Carlile will join him on stage Sunday, and it’s no coincidence that all are women. He’s had rewarding creative relationships with female artists, he said, and the three are “very important singers in my life.”

He and Dee had a 1976 hit with the bouncy “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” and she was with him at his first L.A. stadium show. John is close to Carlile, who joined him for “Simple Things” on his 2021 “The Lockdown Sessions” album, and their families vacation together. It’s a big week for Carlile, who earned seven Grammy nods Tuesday.

“It was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again,” John said.

“I’m not tired,” John told AP.

Hilburn said John’s performance that August night “was, in almost every way, magnificent” and called his songs (written with lyricist Bernie Taupin) “staggeringly original.”

A prominent activist, he’s shared his name and good fortune.

“It is definitely the farewell tour,” he said, although a short-term residency, such as Kate Bush’s three weeks at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in 2014, has its appeal.

“But to be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I’ll be looking forward to taking a breather,” he said. Then it’s back to work on projects already in progress, including “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.”

That’s for starters.

“I’ll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything,” John said. “But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”

Elton John Announces Final North American Dates for ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ Tour

  • By Althea Legaspi

Althea Legaspi

Elton John has announced the final North American leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which takes place in 2022.

The new dates kick off at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 15th and culminate with a two-night stint at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on November 19th and 20th. Tickets go on sale on June 30th, with presale tickets available to American Express card members beginning on Wednesday at noon local time.

“Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. I’m coming to you today with an announcement I’ve been working towards for, well, all my life: The shows that I announce today will be my final tour dates ever in North America and Europe,” John said in a statement. “I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career.”

In September, John announced makeup dates for the tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic. The rescheduled trek runs from January through April. The newly announced final dates include 30 stadium shows, with a run of performances in Europe from May to June before he heads to North America. Tickets to those dates sold out quickly but there are seats available through VividSeats.com .

John launched the  Farewell Yellow Brick Road  tour in September 2018 in  Allentown, Pennsylvania . It was originally slated to run for three years, but the pandemic forced it off the road in March 2020. Two Auckland, New Zealand, shows are also planned for January 27th and 28th, 2023, with the four-year tour concluding sometime in 2023 in Australia with a string of shows to be announced at a later date.

“Whether it’s next summer in Frankfurt or at the legendary Dodger Stadium for the grand finale in the United States, I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time,” John added. “This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows. To all my friends down under: We’ll be seeing you, too. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in your town.”

Farewell Elton John

Philip Cosores

When are you going to come down?

These are words that Elton John has sung countless times, the opening to one of his trademark hits, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” And for most of his career, the meta answer to the question has been sometime later, but not now. But that all changed in recent years, as he embarked on his final tour, cleverly dubbed “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.” A Covid pandemic slowed the run down, but on Sunday night in Los Angeles — as well as around the world on Disney+ — he took his final American bow, playing his last scheduled US tour date at a location steeped in Elton lore. Will it actually be the last time American audiences can see him? That feels unlikely, be it a one-off or something else, but for the moment, this was goodbye. When are you going to land? Right now, apparently.

The reason for hanging them up is noble enough: to spend time with his young sons, whose mid-70s father has been working globally for most of their lives, and most of his own. Before the final song on Sunday night, he brought the family out to show who he was leaving life on the road for.

It’s not for any declining ability to perform. For most of the 2.5 hour set, Elton sounded stunning while in his standard, soulful register. Sure, he might not be able to hit the highest notes anymore, but he elegantly sang around the natural limitations of age at the peaks of “Tiny Dancer” and “Rocket Man.” (In comparison, someone like Paul McCartney opts to surround himself with many backing singers to help carry the tunes. There’s no right or wrong way to age as a performer and both are affecting successes, but there was something particularly admirable in Elton not having a chorus of singers behind him, allowing for an appreciation of just how much of his youthful vocals do remain.)

And it’s certainly not for waning relevance. Just in the last year, Elton found himself in the top 10 of the Hot 100 with his clever Dua Lipa collaboration, “Cold Heart,” which the pair playfully performed in concert on Sunday. It’s just one recent example of his embracing whatever cultural trends are happening, something that has punctuated every era of his career. His been animated on both The Simpsons and South Park , performed at the VMAs with Eminem and Axl Rose. When Britney Spears released a comeback single this year, it was with Elton John . ’90s kids will love him for writing music for The Lion King , and 2010s kids might wind up loving him for the Oscar-winning Rocketman . There’s never been a period where Elton John wasn’t touching modern culture. Even looking around my section of the audience, you could spot John Stamos, Josh Homme, and Jojo Siwa rocking out, different worlds and experiences with the legend colliding.

For me, though, Elton John will always be that early cassette tape I owned, a perfect object for a five-year-old to wear out, intrigued by the big glasses and white suit that the man donned on the cover. He created music so timeless that a child could obsess over how instantly accessible and permanently memorable each song was, and feel the same thing 30-plus years later in concert. One person behind us held up a sign that read “Thank you Elton John for my life” and I couldn’t agree more — as a person that gets paid to read and write about music, that early exposure to Elton John’s music helped set me along my path.

But regardless of how or when the tens of thousands of Angelenos in attendance came to Elton John’s music, we were all saying farewell the same way. We all wore little blinking bracelets that changed color with the music. We all sang our loudest to “Burn Down The Mission” and “Levon.” We all shed a tear as Elton paid tribute to Aretha Franklin for “Border Song” and his fallen bandmates ahead of “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” the latter spruced up as a duet with Brandi Carlile. We all smiled from ear to ear as confetti rained down at the end of “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” and as Kiki Dee took the stage to duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”

But mostly we all savored the moment. Elton didn’t really bask in the ending of it all, giving nods to his connection to the city without pressing for sentimentality — he shouted out the LA Times’ Robert Hilburn for jumpstarting his career with his famed 1970 Troubadour review and paid homage to his 1975 rhinestone Dodger uniform with a new rhinestone Dodger robe, perfect for retirement. Looking around, at fans young and old, there was an abundance of gratitude and appreciation for a legacy that extends far beyond the music.

If we’re going by music alone, Elton John could still stand ahead of most anyone from the classic rock era (shouts to his lyrics partner Bernie Taupin as well). But things like his advocacy for AIDS and LGBTQ rights, his knighthood, his numerous Grammys and Oscars and Tonys, his iconic tributes to Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana and so much more make him the kind of enduring cultural monument that can hardly be matched. He might be gone from touring in America (head to Europe or Australia in 2023 if you want to catch him), but he’ll never be gone from our imagination. His impact will continue to ripple long after the last song is sung.

Elton John bids farewell to US with 'emotional' Los Angeles concert

  • Entertainment

Thursday, 24 Nov 2022

The sun is going down on Elton John's final North American show in the place where it all began – Dodger Stadium.

"Tonight is a very special night, a very emotional night for me," John said after playing Philadelphia Freedom on a grand piano centre stage and donning a bedazzled jacket with tails and sunglasses. "It has been a long journey."

John, 75, closed out his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in North America on Sunday (Nov 20), marking his final American concert.

The Rocket Man singer's third night at Dodger Stadium is even more poignant since the venue serves as the famous setting for John's 1975 breakout stadium concerts.

More than 47 years ago, John's two electrifying, sequin outfit-filled concerts at the historic baseball stadium affirmed the rising star's supernova status (as seen in his 2019 biopic Rocketman .)

Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium is available on Disney+.

"We are making history tonight," said John.

Sunday's show featured guest performances from Dua Lipa, Brandi Carlile and Kiki Dee, John's duet partner for one his biggest hits, Don't Go Breaking My Heart .

A cadre of stars walked the red carpet for John's farewell concert including Lizzo, Heidi Klum, Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Idina Menzel, John Stamos, Connie Britton and Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller.

"This is a huge undertaking," says executive producer Ben Winston. "After such an unbelievable career, this is Elton saying goodbye to America. This is the last show of the last tour. There is a significant historical and emotional moment to that. And those 1975 gigs only add to that. When you think of Elton John on tour, you think of that show."

The Disney+ concert began with a 20-minute pre-taped interview with John and his partner David Furnish discussing why "he's hanging up his touring boots".

As for the million-dollar question as to whether John will continue to perform, Furnish spoke to Billboard ahead of Sunday's show and stated: "I know for a fact he will not be touring in any capacity. What you're going to see is the possibility of a special one-off or a small residency in one venue for a limited period of time." – USA Today/Tribune News Service

The three-hour concert documentary filmed in Los Angeles capped off his five-year, 300-show Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. The tour sold 6 million tickets and grossed more than $930 million, making it the second-highest-grossing tour of all time,  according to Billboard.

John is currently recovering from a recent knee surgery that kept him from attending the Emmy Awards ceremony, but he issued a statement afterward expressing gratitude for the achievement.

"We won an Emmy and I am on cloud nine," he said  on social media.  "Receiving this recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved, and I am so deeply grateful. ...Thank you to all the fans, friends, and collaborators who have supported me throughout the years. No Elton John tickets? Here’s how to livestream his final Dodger Stadium concert

Elton John has reached the end of the yellow brick road. He’s preparing for three final shows in Los Angeles, the city that launched his career .

After shows this Thursday and Saturday, the musician will take his final North American bow Sunday at Dodger Stadium, where he famously graced the stage 47 years ago in costumes that included his classic bedazzled baseball uniform.

Want to see John perform but don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars or count the headlights on the highway to Chavez Ravine? You’re in luck. Unlike in 1975, fans who can’t attend in person will have the opportunity to livestream “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.”

Elton John will take his final bow at Dodger Stadium. So let’s time travel back to his legendary 1975 concert

Beginning Thursday, Elton John will play his final U.S. concerts at Dodger Stadium, where, in 1975, he donned a sequined Dodgers uniform and made music history.

Nov. 16, 2022

“To feel the energy from the best fans, not only in Dodger Stadium again, but this time around the world from those watching live at home, will be truly extra special for me,” the “I’m Still Standing” hitmaker said last month in a statement.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate this momentous evening globally. I hope everyone feels the power and joy of performing on a stage as iconic as Dodger’s. Just like I did almost 50 years ago.”

John’s forthcoming concert at Dodger Stadium will cap the marathon North American leg of his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, which launched in September 2018 and was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s everything you need to know about the show, from viewing options to celebrity guests.

What time is the show, and where can I watch it?

The concert is slated to begin Sunday around 8 p.m. Pacific time, and fans can watch from home by tuning into “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” on Disney+ . The show is expected to last approximately three hours.

A “Countdown to Elton Live” preshow will be available to stream on Disney+ starting at 7:30 p.m. Pacific.

Joni Mitchell was happy about her Newport Folk Festival gig in July, enough so that it might be released as a live album, she tells Elton John.

Who’s performing?

John, obviously. But set to join him onstage are a few of his famous friends — including his “Cold Heart” collaborator Dua Lipa, his “Simple Things” collaborator Brandi Carlile and, of course, his longtime “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” duet partner Kiki Dee.

“When you work with a different artist, you always learn something from them,” John recently told the Associated Press . “That’s the whole point.”

Other “non-performing celebrities and influencers” also are expected to attend, according to Disney.

The song marks Spears’ first recording since 2016, following her freedom from her conservatorship, and another successful repurposing by John of his catalog.

What about Britney?

Britney Spears, who just recorded the “Tiny Dancer” remix “Hold Me Closer” with John, is not in the lineup and hasn’t performed live since 2018. But who knows? Maybe she’ll make a surprise appearance at Dodger Stadium.

The Spears collaboration “was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again,” John told AP.

“To see that [single] become a success makes me feel so happy, that she’s hopefully feeling the love from those people.”

The year was 1970 and Elton John, then just 23, was making his U.S. debut onstage at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.

Can I still see the show in person?

Yes! Tickets for the concert are still available to purchase online . They range in price from about $131 to nearly $10,000.

Where to next?

Sunday’s Dodger Stadium concert will mark John’s final show in North America (at least as part of a traveling tour) — but he’s not done yet. In January, the Rocket Man will take his show to Australia and New Zealand before heading to the United Kingdom and beyond.

The tour is scheduled to end in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 8.

“To be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I’ll be looking forward to taking a breather,” John told AP.

“I’ll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything. ... But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”
