Outer Banks Filming Locations in Charleston: A Guide for Fans

The Netflix series Outer Banks, set in the fictional town of Kildare in North Carolina, showcases many beautiful and adventurous scenes. One moment, you might see John B. and Big John on a jet ski at Thomson Park on Sullivan’s Island, only to find them shortly afterward near the Morris Island Lighthouse. Despite these rapid changes, the show remains engaging and offers a unique thrill for those who recognize their hometown on screen.

The Ultimate Outer Banks Show Fan Guide to South Carolina

August 24, 2020 By Caroline Eubanks 3 Comments

Outer Banks sign at Breach Inlet

The Netflix hit series Outer Banks is about John B., a teenager living with his group of misfit friends, called Pogues, on an island in North Carolina ‘s Outer Banks.

They clash with the rich kids, called the Kooks, while searching for his father and buried treasure. Along the way, he falls in love with a rich girl, reminiscent of the plot of The Notebook .

The show wasn’t filmed in the real Outer Banks because of the “bathroom bill” in North Carolina. Instead, it was filmed in and around Charleston , South Carolina. Season 2 was set in the Bahamas but was actually filmed in Barbados . In fact, you can rent the home used as the Camerons vacation home .

The show incorporates real Charleston names, including Vanderhorst, Heyward, and Rutledge. It also fictionalizes real events like the Denmark Tanny character, based loosely on Denmark Vesey. There are also plenty of North Carolina references .

But it’s also been criticized for its inaccuracies. For example, the drive between any island in the chain to Chapel Hill would take over four hours, despite how it appears on the show. They also describe Gullah as a lost language, which it certainly isn’t.

Despite these issues, the show presents the stunning scenery of the South Carolina coast . A number of locations are used, including private homes that stood in for John B’s house and Topper’s house. These can likely be found online, but we don’t recommend seeking them out.

Also, this post is not spoiler-free!

There are many locations you can visit, but we’ve highlighted the easiest to visit. The ferry to the mainland is the Charleston Maritime Center , while the UNC Archive was filmed at the Gaillard Auditorium . John B. and Sarah pass Washington Square on the way to the real Ben Silver store.

Dunes West was the site of the outdoor movie. The Ravenel Bridge is featured in season 2, along with the one-way streets South of Broad. The repair shop where Pope brought his dad’s truck is the now-closed Carolina Country Store near Georgetown .

Season three was filmed all over Charleston, including Breach Inlet on Sullivan’s Island , where John B and Big John hopped on a jet ski to chase after the bad guys. The Provost Dungeon also stands in for the Charleston Museum’s exterior. St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center on Seabrook Island is where Kie is sent.

*New season alert* Season four has been filming in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, located just outside of Wilmington . Specifically, the cast has been spotted at Crystal Pier, Oceanic Restaurant, and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area .

This is the show’s first appearance in the state and will focus on Blackbeard, who famously trolled the waters of the Outer Banks. Read more about pirate history here . Another favorite show, The Summer I Turned Pretty , is also filming here.

Charleston “Outer Banks” Locations from Seasons 1-2

Botany bay wildlife management area.

Driftwood Beach

After filming was completed in the spring of 2019, the boneyard beach featured in Outer Banks , on Hunting Island in Beaufort , was bulldozed . But recent visitors say it has returned to its original state covered in driftwood!

If you’re looking for a similar landscape, you’ll find it at Botany Bay Plantation Wildlife Management Area on Edisto Island , a former plantation site around 45 minutes south of Charleston. The Patriot was also filmed here.

Bowen’s Island Restaurant

Bowen's Island Restaurant

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene from season 2 episode four, the Pogues pick up beer for a party at John B’s house. Later, Kie and JJ go there to pick up provisions for his dad’s escape. In season three, Rafe goes to the bar here.

But the dockside spot where they got it was Bowen’s Island Restaurant , a longtime seafood restaurant on James Island. The eatery is the best place around for fresh oysters and has also been used for films like Dear John . It was opened in 1946 by May and Jimmy Bowen and is still in the family.

Creekside Lands Inn

Creekside Lands Inn

After the hurricane, John B. and his friends find a sunken ship and find a hotel key in the wreckage. It brings them to the Summer Winds, a run-down hotel.

In real life, it’s the Creekside Lands Inn in the West Ashley suburb of Charleston . I’ve stayed there and it’s one of the cheapest places to stay in the area, a short drive from downtown.

Edmonston-Alston House

Edmonston-Alston House

The second season uses Charleston as a setting, not just a filming location. JJ, Pope, and Kie go to Limbrey’s house, which they claim is on King Street. But in real life, it’s part of what’s called The Battery, the sea wall with some of Charleston’s most lavish houses. It’s also where Sarah and John B dock the boat.

The Edmonston-Alston House was used as her house and is one of the city’s best historic homes . It was built in 1825 for Scottish immigrant Charles Edmondston on the ruins of a fort alongside a sea wall. The modified single house was purchased by rice planter Charles Alston in 1838 and the third story was added.

Lowndes Grove

Lowndes Grove Plantation

Lowndes Grove Plantation stood in as Sarah Cameron’s family house in Outer Banks . In real life, it’s a popular wedding venue on the Ashley River. Built in 1786 by John Gibbes, the original home was destroyed and plots of land were subdivided and sold by his ancestors.

The current house was built in the following years and became the home of Congressman William Lowndes, for whom it’s now named. In 1901, the property was the site of the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition.

It was purchased in 2007 for its current use as an events facility. It’s not open to the public unless you’re inquiring about or attending a wedding but you can sometimes snap a photo from behind the gates. Just don’t disturb the neighbors.

McClellanville

McClellanville, South Carolina Jeremy Creek

The town of McClellanville stands in as “The Cut,” the less wealthy part of fictional Kildare. In real life, the fishing community is located around an hour north of Charleston , on the way to Georgetown . Dating back to the 1860s, it has a number of historic landmarks.

The old Bethel AME Church was used in Outer Banks as the “secret spot” and was recently vandalized by overzealous fans. Please be respectful of these locations and do not trespass.

Morris Island Lighthouse

Morris Island Lighthouse

Folly Beach is seen often on Outer Banks as the inlet where the Pogues find the sunken ship has the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse in the background. Here they’re chased by the bad guys and Kie’s quick thinking saves them. In season three, Sarah and Topper come to the lighthouse after the beach party.

The lighthouse was built of brick in 1876 in place of another that had been destroyed. It was originally on the namesake Morris Island, but the changing currents and Hurricane Hugo led to the complete erosion of surrounding land and structures.

The best views of the lighthouse are from a boat or the Lighthouse Inlet on the eastern tip of the island, where hurricanes washed away homes, leaving only their foundations.

See the lighthouse from the water on Charleston’s Tidal Creeks Eco Boat Cruise with Stop at Morris Island Lighthouse .

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island was used several times on Outer Banks . It was used as a hotel where JJ worked when the gang went to use the computers. The Ocean Course golf course was also used where Rafe rides the trails and where he later beats up Pope.

The Ocean Clubhouse was the setting for the midsummer ball. Guests of The Sanctuary or Kiawah Island rental homes , as well as golfers, can visit the club. For the full “Kook” experience, dine at the Atlantic Room restaurant or the more casual Ryder Cup Bar, which both have views of the golf course.

In season 2, the Seabrook Island Club was used as JJ’s workplace.

The Old Navy Base

charleston sc obx tour

The Old Navy Base in North Charleston is home to a few Outer Banks landmarks. The Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel was the Kildare County Courthouse where John B was sentenced. It was built in 1944 and now operates as a wedding chapel. A few streets away, the jail where John B is held is the old Naval Hospital .

The base operated from 1901 to 1996, when it closed. A number of the buildings have been repurposed and preserved, used as warehouses and for filming, including for Army Wives . The Riverfront Park on the base is now used as a venue for music festivals.

Old Village Mount Pleasant

Old Village Mount Pleasant

The Old Village of Mount Pleasant is seen in the background in a number of episodes, including where the police station is located and where John B is dropped off by the sheriff after getting tased. The church in episode 8, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, is also here.

In season 2, the storm drain where the gun gets lost is here. The surf shop is also here. In season 3, JJ rides his bike down a path that ends at the Pitt Street Bridge.

This area is home to some of the city’s oldest businesses, including Pitt Street Pharmacy, along with shops and restaurants. Dating back to 1803, it’s made up of the streets south of Shem Creek on the Cooper River. It was also used in The Notebook .

Palmetto Islands County Park

Palmetto Islands County Park

The observation deck John B. falls from in season one is Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. The over 900-acre park has multiple trails and boardwalks over the marsh, a kayak rental area, a seasonal waterpark, and picnic tables. Admission is $4 per person.

Shem Creek

Shem Creek is home to the setting for Kie’s family restaurant and Pope’s dad’s seafood business. The real fishing community was featured in the show with active shrimp boats in the background. Heyward’s Seafood is actually Geechie Seafood , a local seafood vendor.

The restaurant is called The Wreck on the show and in real life, known as a laid-back seafood dive named for a boat that washed up during a hurricane. It’s become a popular restaurant with fans, but be sure to go when they open at 5 pm or they may be out of food. There’s also signed memorabilia from filming on the walls.

The best views are from Shem Creek Park, a public park with platforms over the water. You can also see the dolphins and other creatures that inhabit the creek on a kayaking tour .

See Shem Creek with a Shem Creek Walking Bar Tour , Behind the Scenes of Shem Creek Shrimp Walking Tour , or Charleston Harbor Sunset Cruise .

Summerville

Summerville

In season 2, Pope goes looking for a family heirloom at his great-grandmother’s former apartment, located above a pharmacy. The scene showcases downtown Summerville , including Guerin’s Pharmacy . The area was first settled around the Revolutionary War and today is known as “Flowertown.” The historic downtown area is full of restaurants, shops, and bars. It’s also recognized as the birthplace of Sweet Tea.

Beaufort “Outer Banks” Locations

Hunting island lighthouse.

021 Lighthouse Hunting Island SP SC 6618

Located to the south in Beaufort is the Hunting Island Lighthouse . Built in the 1800s, it has a similar design to one in Cape Canaveral , Florida. It has been restored and is open to visitors for a $2 admission fee.

In Outer Banks , John B. and Kie come to the lighthouse, which had a sign up about being closed after the hurricane, in search of answers about his dad and the sunken treasure.

Outer Banks -Style Experiences

No matter whether you’re in Charleston or the real Outer Banks, you can have experiences similar to the characters in the Netflix show.

Can’t get enough of the Outer Banks? Book an Outer Banks Film Locations Tour .

Finding Buried Treasure

Pirate cutlass, Charleston Museum

The coastal area from Florida to Virginia is full of sunken ships and possible treasure. In fact, the Outer Banks area is known as the “ Graveyard of the Atlantic ” for the abundance of sunken ships.

You can see many of these underwater treasures through dive operators on the Outer Banks like Dive Hatteras . In Charleston, you can go diving to artificial reefs created by sunken boats with outfitters like Charleston Scuba .

If you’d rather stay on dry land, there are interesting museums to visit. In Charleston, you can see the Hunley , a Civil War submarine that sat on the ocean floor for generations before being recovered. The Charleston Museum also has an incredible selection of artifacts (and was featured in season three). The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum on Hatteras Island has items from Blackbeard’s ship.

Learning About Gullah-Geechee Culture

There are mentions and references to the Gullah people in Outer Banks , but it’s far from a lost culture. The Creole language is still spoken in this region, including on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina and Sapelo Island in Georgia.

Learn about the Geechee people of Beaufort, South Carolina on the Spirit of Old Beaufort Heritage Tour or join the Hilton Head to Daufuskie Island Round-Trip Ferry with 2-Person Golf Cart Rental to visit the island where the Sea Island people still live.

Surfing the Atlantic Ocean

John from 2nd Street

John B. and his pals enjoy surfing the waters of the Outer Banks, which is something you can do in real life. Sign up for Surf Lessons on the Outer Banks to practice your moves.

In Charleston, locals head to The Washout, a popular surf spot on Folly Beach. You can also take a surf lesson in Charleston .

Taking the Ferry

Sarah and John B. make plans to go to the mainland to see a map in the UNC Archives, sneaking onto a ship on the way there. On the way back, they board the ferry. A ferry to Wilmington appears in the third season.

The ferry itself is the Carolina Belle , a harbor tour boat in Charleston. There are also water taxi services that run between downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant. In real life, you can take the ferries to Ocracoke and Hatteras islands in the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks Spots in Charleston

If someone had to guess where the popular Netflix show OBX was filmed, would they get it right? Turns out, OBX was filmed in the Low Country of Charleston! Netflix was originally planning to film the series in Outer Banks, NC, but chose to switch up the plans and film it right here in our beloved Low Country instead.

Some of the most gorgeous parts of the show were filmed in Charleston’s best-kept secret, Old Village. Old Village is a local favorite with moss-draped Spanish trees lining the streets, gorgeous historic homes, and delicious restaurants all around. The Pitt Street Pharmacy, which was seen on the show, is an old, well-known business here. Locals recommend the Pitt Street Bridge as the best place to catch blue crabs. There is also a lovely bed and breakfast, as well as a wonderful restaurant, here if you want to visit or stay. The restaurant, Post Host, is perfectly tucked away in the trees, making it a wonderful, quaint spot to visit.

Another popular location OBX filmed at was Lowndes Grove, a spot often used for weddings and large gatherings. Lowndes Grove is a stunning, waterfront estate built in 1786, which was used in the show as Sarah's family home - lucky her!

Washington Square Park in downtown Charleston is one of the more beautiful locations seen on the show. Located at the heart of the city's historic district, you can enjoy a stroll around the park to see the lovely azaleas and various species of trees, relax on the grass, have a lovely picnic, or simply people-watch. On the show, this park was shown when John B. and Sarah took a trip down to UNC Chapel Hill.

Did you also happen to notice the old lighthouse on the show? Many people would be amazed to hear that this lighthouse was actually destroyed during the Civil War. However, Morris Island Lighthouse rebuilt the structure in 1875. It is now the only public lighthouse in South Carolina.

Lastly, one of my all-time favorite places to go to in Charleston is Shem Creek. Shem Creek has lots of restaurants near the water, which makes it the perfect destination for a delicious meal with a view. There are many activities available for visitors here, like kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, or the tiki boat. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a dauphin or a manatee, as both animals frequent the area. Lots of shrimp boats also come out onto Shem Creek for the freshest shrimp in the region. On the show, whenever John B. and his friends are out on their boats, they are usually going up and down Shem Creek. I’m sure many viewers wish they could have been out dining on the creek when the film crew was out!

If you have not yet seen the Netflix series Outer Banks , you will be in for a surprise when you visit. We are sure you will not want to leave. Charleston will always hold a spot in our hearts. The beautiful views of the beach, creeks, bridges, and trees all remain unmatched, and it will forever be home to the rich history of wonder that has taken place in our small, beloved Low Country.

14 'Outer Banks' Filming Locations You Can Visit in Real Life

Plot twist! None of them are actually in North Carolina.

charleston sc obx tour

If you want a taste of the Pogue life, look no further than Charleston, South Carolina . Netflix's Outer Banks , which is technically set in the real Outer Banks of North Carolina , isn't actually filmed there.

Prior to its 2020 debut, the show moved production to South Carolina reportedly in response to North Carolina's widely protested 2016 House Bill 2 legislation, which would have required transgender people to use the bathroom according to the sex they were assigned at birth. Though parts of the bill — also known as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act — were later repealed, LGBTQ+ organizations continue to fight for trans rights throughout the state.

Outer Banks production apparently found equally beautiful locations at which to film just a little further south. The series showcases some of the most scenic spots in Charleston and Mount Pleasant. Here are some highlight Outer Banks -inspired destinations, so you can live out your teen mystery drama fantasies in one of the most charming and historical cities in the U.S. and abroad. (Read on only if you don't mind Season 3 spoilers.)

Shem Creek, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Riddhish Chakraborty/Getty Images

The show features plenty of sun-soaked scenes on the water, and many of them were filmed along Mount Pleasant's Shem Creek. The waterfront area is a big tourist destination where you can find beautiful views, creekside dining, and ample opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and boating in true Outer Banks fashion.

Pitt Street, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Daniela Duncan/Getty Images

The building that once housed The Green Shutter, a Mount Pleasant antiques store, at 121 Pitt St. served as the Kildare Island Surfboard Co. in the show. This small stretch in the Old Village is also home to a block of condos with black shutters that became the fictional Kildare County Sheriff’s Station and the Pitt Street Pharmacy , also seen in the show. Take a break with a root beer float here before strolling along the Pitt Street Bridge, on which JJ Maybank drives his dirt bike in Season 3.

The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

The Wreck is featured on the show as being a common Pogue hangout and Kiara's place of work. The full name was shortened for the show, but you'll be happy to know it's actually called The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene . Grab an open-air table at the creekside restaurant in Mount Pleasant for fresh seafood fried to perfection.

Hunting Island Lighthouse, Saint Helena Island, South Carolina

Wolfgang Kaehler/Getty Images

The Hunting Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 but destroyed over the course of the Civil War. It was rebuilt in 1875 and currently stands as a popular tourist attraction. It is repeatedly shown in the show and used as a filming location for the fictional Redfield Lighthouse's interior. The surrounding Hunting Island State Park was also the filming location for the Boneyard and the beach cleanup scene in Season 1, Episode 3. Unfortunately, its namesake lighthouse is closed to visitors due to ongoing repairs, but you can still approach and learn about it from docents outside the structure.

Geechie Seafood, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Heyward's Seafood (owned by Pope Heyward's dad) in the show is actually Geechie Seafood in Mount Pleasant. This seafood shack is the perfect place to find fresh shrimp straight from Shem Creek. In fact, the whole area is a seafood lover's paradise.

The Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Of the fanciest Kook hangouts is the Kiawah Island Golf Resort , which was a stand-in for the country club that hosted the Midsummers party in Season 1. In real life, the golf resort off the coast of Charleston draws golfers and anyone else interested in beachside activities, a tennis match, or a relaxing stay in one of its luxurious villas.

Washington Square, Charleston, South Carolina

Bkamprath/Getty Images

John B and Sarah visited this gorgeous park, located in downtown Charleston, as part of their day trip to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (or the show's version of it, anyway). The patch of green space is perfect for a romantic stroll or picnic amid the Spanish moss-draped oaks. As a bonus, Washington Square is also right in the middle of the city's historic district.

Charleston Gaillard Center, Charleston, South Carolina

Another day-trip stop for John B and Sarah, the so-called exterior of UNC Chapel Hill's Law Library — the real thing is in North Carolina, of course — was actually the exterior of the Charleston Gaillard Center . The stately building is not a library but a concert hall and performance venue where people can see touring Broadway shows, the Charleston Symphony , and more.

Morris Island Lighthouse, Folly Beach, South Carolina

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located just off the coast of Folly Beach, the Morris Island Lighthouse doubled as the exterior of the fictional Redfield Lighthouse in the Netflix series and is considered to be a major highlight of a trip to South Carolina's Lowcountry. Constructed in 1872, its tower has leaned a little northeast ever since an earthquake struck in 1886. At 161 feet, it also happens to be the tallest lighthouse in the state.

The Ben Silver Collection, Charleston, South Carolina

If you want to be a Kook, you should dress like one. And there's no better way to cop some rich-kid style than at The Ben Silver Collection flagship store in Charleston. Another stop on John B and Sarah's day trip, this colorful fashion brand is known for its very Southern styles for both men and women.

Bridgetown, St. Michael, Barbados

Season 3 takes the Pogues of Outer Banks to Barbados . After their plane crashes into the Caribbean Sea — filmed off the western coast, near Port St. Charles — they can be seen navigating the busy streets of Bridgetown. Barbados' capital city is known for its colonial architecture, museums, and shopping.

St. John's Parish Church, St. John, Barbados

thierry64/Getty Images

The old hilltop church where Big John rings the bell for his son, John B, to hear is St. John's Parish Church, one of the oldest churches in Barbados and world renowned for its impressive woodwork. The original structure was built during the 17th century, but parts of it were rebuilt in the 1800s due to storm damage. Today, it's included on many east coast tours of the island. Stand (safely) at the edge of the cliff for stunning ocean views.

The Charleston Museum, Charleston, South Carolina

The Charleston Museum is the oldest museum in the U.S. and the setting of Big John and John B’s Season 3 heist. Visitors certainly shall not rob the museum of an artifact from the ancient Gnomon of Solana, as the characters do — it would be impossible anyway, seeing as the archeological site is entirely fictional — but they would be remiss not to stop by and learn about the history of the region from its many fascinating exhibits.

Welchman Hall Gully, St. Thomas, Barbados

Perhaps the most fantastical scene of the series is in the "city of gold," El Dorado. In the Season 3 finale, viewers see John B, Big John, and the Pogues enter a cave and wind up immersed in a metallic world. Those cave and jungle scenes were filmed at Welchman Hall Gully in Barbados (not Venezuela, as the show suggests), and while much of the aesthetic from the show was computer-generated, the real caves and natural surroundings are still beautiful as ever.

The Breathtaking Scenic Drive In South Carolina That Runs Parallel To The Ashley River

Written by

It's been called one of the most beautiful drives in America, a road that parallels the beautiful Ashley River in Dorchester and Charleston Counties called Ashley River Road, the oldest highway in the state. It was established in 1691, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and designated a National Scenic Byway in 2000. The road stretches for 12 miles and only takes about half an hour to drive straight through, but there are sights to enjoy along the drive that you'll want to take time for.

alt

Starting on the Charleston end of Ashley River Road at Charlestowne Landing , which is technically not directly on Ashley River Road (slightly off the route on Old Towne Road), this state historic site is the birthplace of South Carolina. The Ashley River Road was actually developed for early settlers to travel to Charlestowne Landing, making it the perfect starting point for experiencing the scenic byway.

alt

Allow for time to tour The Adventure , Charleston's only 17th-century replica sailing ship.

Traveling about five miles north on Ashley River Road, you'll come to Old Saint Andrews Parish Church, which was built in 1706 and is the oldest surviving church building south of Virginia. Its historic graveyard dates from the church's establishment.

alt

As you continue north along this pretty route, at less than a mile from the church you can stop for a cup of coffee from beans roasted in-house at the Charleston Coffee Exchange.

alt

Another two miles north from the coffee shop is Drayton Hall, which is the oldest (circa 1738) unrestored plantation house in America still open to the public. It was one of four plantation homes along the river spared from being burned down by Union forces during the Civil War.

alt

It's believed that the home may have been spared because of smallpox quarantine flags posted by Dr. John Drayton as part of his service as a surgeon during the War.

Just three-quarters of a mile northward on the gorgeous Ashley River Road drive, you'll come to America's first public gardens, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, which are actually also still owned by the Drayton family. Here you'll experience more than 400 acres of protected wetlands that are a nature lover's paradise.

alt

And last but not least, after about another 3.5 miles on one of America's most beautiful drives you'll find Middleton Place, featuring America's oldest landscaped gardens, dating to the 1730s. By now, you may be quite hungry and can enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant on-site.

alt

What a day full of history and the beauty of South Carolina! You'll want to be sure to wear some comfy sneakers so you can make the most of each stop along this scenic route. You're sure to understand why it's been named one of the most beautiful drives in America once you've experienced it for yourself.

Hop On A Ferry To Experience This Untouched South Carolina Island

Escape to a laid back island where no one is in a hurry to get anywhere.

I vividly remember the first time I saw the ocean. My aunts and uncles invited me to come along on their trip to Myrtle Beach and after a very long drive, we were heading down Ocean Boulevard. I looked out the window and there, between the hotels and condo buildings, was a sliver of sand and surf - glimpses of magic between brick and mortar.

I was 8 years old then, and now that I am an adult, glimpses of the beach still hold the same magic. One thing that has changed for me is my desire to seek out those beaches that are relatively untouched, quiet, and remote. This takes a relaxing day at the beach to a whole new level. This is why, when my friend told me about one of her favorite places — Daufuskie Island — I immediately added it to my list of places to visit.

To discover more incredible off-the-beaten-path destinations across America, Destination Detour has you covered.

What makes Daufuskie Island special?

alt

Daufuskie Island is approximately 8 square miles of remoteness in South Carolina, close to Bluffton and Hilton Head. Its history is long, its natural beauty is vast, and it is a quiet respite amongst the busy and popular beaches of this area of South Carolina. My friends, the Aytes family, have visited for decades and they say Daufuskie is like traveling back in time. “When you are there, you get to escape the chaos and slow down. It’s a laid back island. No one is in a hurry to get anywhere.”

alt

I’ve always been mesmerized by their photos of empty beaches, fishing under rainbows, and golf cart adventures. As I did my own learning, I also became fascinated with the history of the island and the people who call it home. In addition to all of this, Daufuskie is an island with no bridge. You cannot drive to Daufuskie; the only way to reach this place is by boat through the Calibogue Sound.

How do you get to Daufuskie?

alt

While I believe Daufuskie Island is worthy of its own week-long vacation, many visit the island as a day trip from Hilton Head. Either way, with no bridge, you must take a boat to get there. There are many options for ferry services, private boats, and boat tours that offer one-way rides or back and forth for a day trip.

A few of our favorites include:

  • Island Head out of Hilton Head
  • May River Excursions from historic Bluffton
  • H20 Sports Daufuskie Island Ferry

alt

This is one aspect of your visit that you will definitely want to plan ahead of time. Your accommodation may be able to help coordinate your boat ride to the island or you can book with one of the services listed below (There are others, but these are some of our favorites.). Keep in mind, you’ll be leaving your car at this ferry service and taking everything you need for your visit with you.

Where to stay on Daufuskie?

alt

If you’ve visited other South Carolina beaches, such as Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, you know you’ll find just about every type of accommodation. The quiet escape of Daufuskie Island is nearly the opposite of these well-known beaches and its overnight stays are no exception. You won’t find towering hotels or massive, multi-unit condo buildings. Instead, you’ll discover a mix of quaint cottages and beachfront homesteads, many of which are available to rent through sites such as Airbnb.

Palmetto Cottage is the guest house of the historic Sarah Grant home. It is nestled amongst palm trees and marsh grass and the views are remarkable.

alt

It’s a small, studio-style home that shares the property with the owners of the main house, but this is the ideal accommodation for those looking to slow down while delving into the history of this island.

alt

If you’re traveling with a larger group, Secret Beach Cottage is the beachfront oasis you’re seeking. With five bedrooms and lovely, inviting living spaces, there is plenty of room to spread out both within the home and outside. The screened in porch is where you’d find me, sipping iced tea and taking in the views of the Atlantic Ocean. And better yet… that sandy beach is just a 90-second walk away and you’ll likely have it all to yourself.

alt

36 Hours on Daufuskie Island: A Quintessential 2-Day Itinerary

alt

The peace and quiet of Daufuskie Island and its slow pace nature mean that it’s not for everyone. I am actually grateful for this because hopefully it means that the island will remain the same for years to come. You could spend a few hours or an entire week on Daufuskie and only have one thing on your agenda - slow down. But because this is such a special place and there are incredible experiences, kind locals to meet, and delicious food to taste, we recommend slowing down while taking in quintessential Daufuskie.

alt

Begin your day with a golf cart ride to the historic Mary Fields School and School Grounds Coffee . Whether iced or hot, their coffee is delicious and it’s always a treat to support a local endeavor. If you’re hungry, grab a baked good while you’re there and then ride around the corner, down Beach Road, to the nearby public beach. You can’t go wrong with starting your day with an ocean breeze and toes in the sand.

alt

The history of Daufuskie Island is best learned from its locals and we highly recommend you continue your day with a tour led by Sallie Ann Robinson . She is a sixth generation native of the island and hearing the stories of this land and its people from her perspective will give you even more insight into the magic and mystery of Daufuskie. Book an 11 am tour and spend three hours seeing the island through the eyes of someone deeply tied to its roots.

alt

After the tour, head to another historic site on the island, Silver Dew Winery . South Carolina’s first winery and the only island winery in the country, this spot is worthy of a visit, even if you are only on the island for a short amount of time. Reserve a tour, taste the wine, and take a bottle or two with you to enjoy throughout the rest of your trip.

alt

Daufuskie may be small, unassuming, and quiet, but it has its own culinary scene that must not be missed. For dinner, head to Old Daufuskie Crab Company at Freeport Marina. This marina is arguably the busiest area of the island, but you should have no problem dining here, especially during the week. Sit outside, people watch - and boat watch - and don’t leave without ordering the island’s specialty, Daufuskie Deviled Crab.

alt

One activity that I love to seek out while traveling is horseback riding. It’s such a unique way to experience the natural beauty of an area and on Daufuskie, you can book a ride with Haig Point to begin your second day. Daufuskie Trail Rides will customize your ride to your group, your abilities, and what you’d like to experience during the ride. While this is a bit of a splurge experience, it may just be the most memorable.

alt

After working up an appetite, head to a mouthwatering hidden gem on the island, Frye’s Corner . This walk-up counter eatery may look like a shack in the middle of nowhere, but don’t judge a book by its cover. Frye’s serves up hand-battered chicken and freshly made onion rings, among a few other menu items. Order the Beach Box that also includes an ice cold bottle of water and enjoy lunch in the lowcountry shade at a picnic table.

alt

Remember the theme of your time on Daufuskie is slow down. So it’s time to slow down at the beach and perhaps even indulge in an afternoon nap on the sand. This time, head to Bloody Point, a site named after battles that took place there in the 1700s. The name may be disturbing, but the scenery is far from it. Use the public beach access, set up a chair and umbrella, and enjoy the respite of a quiet beach.

alt

When it’s time to tear yourself from the beach and wash off the sand and salt, head to a local favorite shop, Daufuskie Soap Company . Located in the middle of the island, you are going to fall in love with the handmade soaps and lotions. Stop in, chat with the owner, and grab a few new favorite soaps to take a bit of the island home with you.

As the day winds down, it’s time for one more meal. All of Daufuskie feels off the beaten path and so do its hidden restaurants. The Sportsmen at Melrose is a great little spot for dinner and you won’t find it unless you’re looking for it. The building blends right in with the surrounding horse barns, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the friendly service, comfortable atmosphere, and delicious array of menu options.

alt

One last stop you must make while on Daufuskie is Fuskie Bikes . Their electric bikes are a great way to get around the island, but your priority should be to snag one of their fresh fruit ice cream cones. Here’s a tip… You will need to stop here earlier in the day as they usually close around 5 or 6 pm and they often sell out. Expect a line, but it’s worth it!

alt

If you’re staying overnight on Daufuskie, slowing down to watch the sun set is a must. Any spot on the beach is wonderful, but head to County Dock on the southwest side of the island for spectacular sunset views.

alt

Need to know information about Daufuskie

  • 1. Plan your ferry ride and golf cart rental ahead of time. These are both essential when visiting Daufuskie Island.
  • 2. Find a place to stay that will assist with the logistics of visiting an island with no bridge. Many rental companies and owners will help with ferry and golf cart arrangements. Sandy Lane Condos, like this oceanfront, 3-bedroom option , is a great place to look into for ease of planning and travel.
  • 3. Confirm hours and locations of destinations you wish to visit on the island. We've recommended our favorites, but business hours do change and places come and go in such a sleepy place.
  • 4. Pack minimally. Remember, you have to bring everything over on a boat and the whole point of a visit to Daufuskie is to slow down and simplify.

alt

The beauty of Daufuskie Island is its ability to force you to slow down. Everyday life is fast-paced and often overflowing with the unnecessary. This South Carolina island begs you to notice the ocean breeze, see the beauty of a backroad, listen to the locals, truly taste your food, and enjoy the simplicities of life that we tend to rush through. I’m grateful there is no bridge to Daufuskie, because once you hop on a ferry and head to the island, you won’t want an easy route back to that other way of life.

alt

It begins with a long tunnel of trees. In certain seasons, this tunnel gives way to a huge field of sunflowers before coming to a near end at an old property that still bears the ruins of an old plantation. We think it's one of the most scenic places in South Carolina .

Get out and explore on foot but pace yourself. There's a beach hike just ahead and it's one you won't want to miss.

alt

(Pictured: the old ice house from the Botany Bay property.)

After exploring the ruins, pop back in the car and head toward the ocean. You'll be able to smell the sweet salt in the air and possibly even hear the ocean from the ruins.

alt

The beach hike to Botany Bay Beach is a half mile on a path that's well-worn, resulting in one of the most beautiful and most beloved hikes in South Carolina . Prepare to meet happy faces all along the way. This is a popular hike - and for a reason!

After leaving Botany Bay, catch your breath for a few miles of driving.

alt

Then, you'll head to Edisto Beach State Park . Note: there are two entrances to this park. The first one takes you to the campground on the backside of the island. The second takes you to the campground and beach along the front side of the island. Explore trails through maritime forests, hike, camp, picnic, swim, and be lazy. You've earned it.

If you made it all the way to the beachfront at Edisto Beach State Park then you've seen only the tip of the iceberg known as Edisto Beach. Stick around. Check out the restaurants and shops. Stay a while.
