WEEKEND RUNDOWN: Here's the biggest news you missed this weekend

Deadly April storm batters Northeast, snarling travel and knocking out power to half a million

A powerful April storm is hitting the Northeast on Thursday, dumping rain and snow with howling tropical force winds, prompting major airport delays and whiteout road conditions, and knocking out power to over half a million customers.

The strong storm system has been crawling across the U.S. since the weekend — and has already led to several weather-related deaths.

In Pennsylvania, two people died in separate incidents in which a tree fell on the car they were in during Wednesday’s storms. An elderly man died in Delaware County, and an elderly woman , described as in her early 80s, was also killed in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Another death was reported in Armonk, New York, Wednesday evening after a tree fell onto a car, killing the operator, North Castle police said. 

As of Thursday morning, the system is making its way out of the Northeast, with 5 million people under wind alerts across New England and 8 million under winter alerts.

The system will produce heavy, wet snow over north-central New England and northeast New York and pass through Maine on Thursday, the National Weather Service Prediction Center forecast. An additional 12 inches of snowfall is possible through Friday.

The system will create “significant impacts from heavy snow and wind,” and perilous travel due to whiteout conditions, snow-covered roads, tree damage and power outages, the NWS said.

Disrupted travel, crashes and power outages

Air travel has already been affected, with over 1,200 delays and over 300 cancellations inside, into or out of the U.S. reported, according to Flight Aware data — all amid a week of busy spring break bookings.

The storm system has also wreaked havoc on roads.

In New Hampshire, state troopers responded to three tractor-trailer rollover crashes in less than seven hours by late Wednesday. State police urged locals “to avoid unnecessary travel.” Massachusetts State Police also responded to multiple crashes Wednesday evening, describing road conditions as “poor.”

Powerful winds have whipped through the region since Wednesday, downing power lines and trees.

Nationally, over 500,000 customers are without power — including over 235,000 in Maine, 53,000 in West Virginia and over 51,000 in New York as of 8:30 a.m., according to PowerOutage.us.

By 2:30 p.m. ET, more than 640,000 were without power with over 334,000 out in Maine and over 173,000 out in New Hampshire.

In New Hampshire as of early Thursday, more than 100,000 customers were without power, the state’s division of homeland security and emergency management said. The agency’s State Emergency Operations Center has been activated in response to the storm.

New York State Electric and Gas, which serves the upstate region, said Wednesday’s severe weather led to 180 downed wires and more than 30 broken poles.

“NYSEG pre-staged more than 2,100 additional line workers and tree personnel across its service areas in preparation for the storm and are currently shifting resources to support its hardest hit areas,” the company said.

Utility company National Grid said it was responding to stormy conditions in upstate New York by increasing staffing, extending overnight shifts, bringing in additional resources from other states and Canada, and pre-staging crews in areas anticipated to be “most severely impacted.”

In Brookfield, Connecticut, a mother and her three kids narrowly escaped injury Wednesday when stormy winds caused a tree to fall on their car, completely crushing it.

In Maine, where heavy snow is forecast, Gov. Janet Mills directed all state offices to be closed Thursday and urged locals to “take proper precautions and to prepare for possible power outages.”

More wind, rain and snow

The storm has already drenched much of the Northeast, with a daily record of 1.75 inches recorded at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday, 1.55 inches in Central Park, 1.49 inches in Philadelphia, and 1.84 inches in Newark, New Jersey.

Even Lady Liberty was hit by rumbling thunderstorms, struck by a bolt of lightning Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. in a stunning moment captured by a photographer from Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

The system has also brought with it dangerously high winds, with a gust of 67 mph reported Wednesday in Nantucket, Massachusetts, 64 mph in Stamford, Connecticut, 59 mph in Manhattan and 54 mph in Boston.

Winds are forecast to stay strong through Thursday, with isolated wind gusts of 50-60 mph possible especially for coastal New England.

Alerts for minor to moderate coastal flooding also remain in effect through Thursday evening for 26 million from the Delmarva Peninsula to the Maine coast.

The system will slowly move off the Northeast coast by Saturday.

Planning to see the 2024 eclipse in New England? We have tips

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, and it will be visible in parts of New England. It’s a rare opportunity to experience what can be, by most accounts, an awe-inspiring natural event. If you haven’t already made plans to see it, it’s worth carefully considering.

Jump ahead: Tips & Advisories | Eclipse events in New England

Exactly where and when can you see it in New England? All of New England will experience some form of an eclipse – either partial or total – on April 8, but experts agree a total eclipse is a more powerful experience worth seeking out . In New England, the path of totality will encompass parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, and Montpelier, the state’s capital, are in the path. Many of the other communities along the path are small cities and rural towns like St. Albans, Vermont; Lancaster, New Hampshire and Houlton, Maine.

The totality will occur at around 3:30 pm on Monday, April 8, 2024.

How is the weather looking?

Northern New England was hit with a major spring snowstorm on Thursday, April 4, but keep checking the forecast . It has been showing a clear, sunny window on April 8.

As this recent storm reminds us, the weather at this time of year is highly unpredictable. If you live in New England or plan to travel here, be sure you have appropriate clothing and supplies, including sturdy boots that can handle the mud that melting snow leaves behind.

What about crowds? This part of New England is close to much larger population centers like Boston and New York, and people in the region are bracing for a large number of visitors from around the Northeast and even the world, especially if the weather forecast looks good.

There’s little to go on as public officials prepare. Past Phish concerts, which drew tens of thousands of fans to rural areas , are helping them imagine the potential crowds and anticipate any problems. Vermont Emergency Management is expecting 160,000 people to visit Vermont for the eclipse. Among other recommendations, they suggest you don’t leave your planning to the last minute.

Should you travel to see the eclipse in New England? First, we hope you have already made your plans. There are definitely some great reasons to see it here.

It’s not often that a total solar eclipse happens so close to where so many of us live. It will be another 20 years before people will be able to see a total solar eclipse anywhere inside the contiguous United States. For months, businesses and tourism officials in the three states have been talking up the local attractions and suggesting visitors make a long weekend of it . Many of these northern communities offer natural beauty, great restaurants and local shopping. And April can be a beautiful time of the year in New England.

We will see what the weather brings on Monday, April 8.

Remember these northern places may feel colder to people traveling from further away. And communities may still be cleaning up from the April 4 storm that knocked out power for thousands of people.

Tips & Advisories

First things first: eye safety You need eye protection if you plan to view the eclipse from anywhere - the risks are real .

Eclipse glasses are widely available online, and you might still be able to find them locally at places like libraries and planetariums.

Be sure to check the eclipse glasses you have are legit .

There are also other gadgets you can make to experience the eclipse. A device that converts light to sound can help people in the blind and low vision community experience the eclipse.

Maine Public has put together tips on how to safely take photos and video of the eclipse and this short guide tells you how to do it with your phone .

Tips on finding lodging Most hotels and short term rentals in northern New England are fully booked . Looking across the full range of totality or just outside of it could help you find a community where there are still lodging options.

Some RV camping may still be a possibility in places.

Officials are issuing strong warnings to people who try to camp. Maine officials say camping on public lands in April is “inadvisable to all but those who are self-sufficient and fully prepared to deal with difficult and highly changeable conditions .

Road and off-road conditions  People who have experienced a total eclipse in the past recommend not traveling on the day of the eclipse to avoid traffic. Whenever possible, they advise against traveling on the day of the eclipse.

Vermont Emergency Management recommends visitors travel with a full tank of gas (or charge and know where to find charging stations). They also recommend packing water or snacks in case you get stuck in traffic, and traveling with a paper map so you aren’t overly reliant on navigation apps.

Cell or internet service could be affected with so many extra people in the region.

In New Hampshire, state officials are urging visitors to “arrive early, stay late” and to expect delays, given the limited number of roads in and out of the state’s North Country. In addition, they say drivers should not pull over on the side of the road to view the eclipse, lest they get stuck in mud or snow (and get laughed at by the locals).

Ski areas in Vermont and Maine that are in the path of totality say they will close lifts during totality. Staff at Vermont’s Jay Peak have a plan to set up safety cones and clear the roads, if on-site parking fills up and people park on highways. And many organizations are warning or begging people to stay off dirt roads and hiking trails. The Green Mountain Club of Vermont has said most trails in that state will be closed . In Maine, officials at Baxter State Park are suggesting visitors consider other venues .

Eclipse events in New England

For those of us already well-placed to see the eclipse, there are many options for celebrating the experience with others in New England.

Cities and towns along the path of totality are planning viewing parties, parades and concerts. These events will also help them manage crowd flow and enforce designated parking areas.

For ticketed events, be sure to check availability before you get your hopes up: some are sold out.

Dozens of events are scheduled across the wide portion of Vermont that will experience totality on April 8.

The city of Burlington has a full calendar of eclipse events including talks, comedy shows and parties. The city has designated seven official viewing sites for viewing totality.

In Glover, the Bread and Puppet Theater will hold an eclipse ritual , involving hymns to the sun and exorcism to banish everything evil.

The Camp Hochelaga YMCA camp in South Hero is hosting a non-ticketed gathering with local musicians and vendors, with a suggested donation.

New Hampshire

The state of New Hampshire has a list of public events, celebrations and eclipse gatherings .

Some are in areas with totality:

• The Great North Woods Center for the Arts near Colebrook is hosting an eclipse concert on the evening of the big event, at 7 p,m.
• Coleman State Park in Stewartstown, right in the path of totality, is hosting something they’re calling Total Eclipse of the Parks . (Get it?) The park will be open for eclipse viewing, with food, refreshments, and activities for kids. Parking is limited, so you’ll need a reservation.

Further south, some events will celebrate the partial eclipse:

• You can watch the partial eclipse and participate in a drum circle at Mystery Hill (aka America’s Stonehenge) in Salem, NH.
• The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord is throwing a viewing party from noon to 5 p.m.

You can find a list of Maine events, safety reminders, and some accommodation tips from the Maine Office of Tourism.

Houlton will host a major celebration leading up to and on April 8. Events include a metaphysical eclipse tent and a bus tour to a nearby planetarium.

In Millinocket, runners will gather for Millinockeclipse , a casual run set to take place during the length of the eclipse. There will also be a town festival , which includes a whoopie pie bake-off.

In Rangeley, the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust is holding a Shadow of the Sun Festival and highlighting International Dark Sky Week.

The M3 was closed through Hampshire for nine hours following a serious crash near Winchester. All lanes were shut between junctions 10 and 11 heading southbound.

Hampshire Police was at the scene of the incident involving a van and a lorry along with highways officers. Diversions were in place but it led to long delays of up to an hour for much of the day and heavy traffic on routes heading into Winchester.

An air ambulance was also reported to be en-route to the scene along the M3 . Police have not yet issued an update on the condition of anyone injured.

All lanes reopened at just before 8.30pm but delays continued, with traffic stretching back for more than four miles. By 9.30pm the M3 was clear, according to live traffic cameras, with no major congestion reported on the route.

Congestion to Winchester Services, affecting traffic coming from A34 Winchester Bypass, majority of the roads coming into Winchester are heavily congested as traffic diverts away and through Twyford passing the Waterworks.

The M3 in Hampshire remains closed westbound within J11 near #Winchester following a serious collision. Traffic is now passing the scene via the exit and entry slip roads. There are currently severe delays of at least 60 mins on approach to the closure

Statement from fire service.

Firefighters were called to support police and ambulance following a road traffic collision on the southbound carriageway of the M3 between junction 10 and 11. Crews from Winchester, Eastleigh, Redbridge and St Mary’s were alerted to the incident involving a van and a lorry shortly before 11am. The road has been closed by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police officers, as HIWFRS work to make the scene safe. HIWFRS left the scene at around 1pm.

Live traffic maps show drivers on the M3 are facing "severe delays" around Winchester. The A34 is also clogging up as drivers use diversion routes in place around the city.

As the closure is in place to the east of the city, Andover Road and Romsey Road are experiencing heavy congestion.

Police are on the scene investigating the earlier crash near Winchester. All lanes between junctions 9 and 11 southbound remain closed.

• Exit at junction 9. At the roundabout, use the 1st exit and join the A272 Spitfire Link.
• Follow for approximately 1 mile to a roundabout. Use the 2nd exit and join the A31.
• Continue for approximately 0.75 miles, to the M3 junction 10 interchange. Use the 1st exit at the roundabout, continuing on the A31 dual carriageway.
• Immediately before the Motorway Bridge, turn left onto the Morestead Road.
• Follow the Morestead Road for approximately 2 miles, to the junction with Hazeley Road at Morestead.
• Turn right onto Hazeley Road and follow for approximately 2 miles to Twyford.
• At the traffic lights in Twyford, turn right onto the B3335 towards Winchester and follow for approximately 1.5 miles to the M3 junction 11 interchange.
• Passing beneath the M3, turn left at the traffic lights and join the A3090 Hockley link road.
• Follow to the next roundabout.
• At the junction 11 roundabout, use the 1st exit to re-join the M3 westbound.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times across the U.S.

See the list of notable total solar eclipses in the u.s. since 1778.

A total solar eclipse crosses North America on April 8, 2024, with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans can see the big event .

The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then travel across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon will fully block out the sun , according to NASA. The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse will start over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT on April 8, according to NASA. From there, the path will continue into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse will exit continental North America around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality includes the following states: Texas , Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois , Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont , New Hampshire , Maine .

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. are included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others will see a partial eclipse. Here are some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — if the weather cooperates :

The eclipse will begin in the U.S. on the afternoon of April 8. It will first be visible as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and progressing along its path to the northeast over the next few hours.

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, Solar Eyeglasses suggests wearing green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

The day has almost arrived: On Monday (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com. 

Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface. 

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Traveling to view the solar eclipse? New Hampshire officials issue warning for drivers

CONCORD, N.H. – Transportation officials in New Hampshire issued a warning for people planning to travel to the Granite State on April 8 to view the solar eclipse.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation issued a travel advisory Monday for the upcoming solar event.

Officials said they are expecting potentially heavy traffic after the eclipse in Coos County, located in the northern part of New Hampshire.

Drivers are being asked to stay on state highways as they travel to eclipse viewing venues and return home.

"Some secondary highways and local roads were not designed to handle large volumes of traffic, and springtime in the north country can bring frost heaves and very soft shoulders," New Hampshire DOT said in a statement. "Traffic generated by the solar eclipse will impact roads throughout New Hampshire. Please obey all officers assisting with traffic control as well as all signs and traffic control devices. Be prepared for slow travel heading south after the eclipse on Monday evening."

Where to view the solar eclipse

The "path of totality" for the April 8 eclipse includes northern New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. That term refers to the track across land where the sun will be completely covered by the moon.

People looking to view the eclipse in the path of totality will be driving in or north of Lancaster, New Hampshire, north of Middlebury in Vermont, and from about Rangely to Presque Isle in Maine.
