Arupadai Veedu Tour (6 Nights / 7 Days)

Day 01: on arrival at chennai.

On Arrival at Chennai Airport, transfer to Stay Hotel. Later we will proceed to see the Local sight seeing at Chennai includes Kabaliswarar Temple, Marina Beach, Fort St.George etc. Stay at Chennai.

Day 02: Chennai – Thiruthani – Kancheepuram – Kumbakonam

After breakfast drive to Thiruthani and visit Thiruthani Murugan temple.(This is one of the Arupadai Veedu Murugan temple) later drive to Kumbakonam via Kancheepuram (This one of the five elements represents EARTH). Overnight halt at Kumbakonam.

Day 03: Kumbakonam – Tanjore – Trichy

Approx. 8 am we drive to visit Swamimalai Murugan Temple (This is one of Aurupadai Murugan Temple), Later drive to Trichy via Thanjauvr. Overnight halt Trichy.

Day 04: Trichy – Sri Rangam – Palani – Madurai

This morning you will visit Sri Rangam Temple and Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval temple (This is one of the five Elements represents WATER) later proceed to Madurai enroute visit to Palani Murugan temple (one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan temple.

Day 05: Excursion visit to Thiruchendur from Madurai

Go for excursion visit to Thiruchendur (This is one of the Arupadai veedu Murugan temple) after the visit and dashan drive back to Madurai. Stay at Madurai.

Day 06: Madurai

Morning visit and pooja at Thiruparamkunram Murugan Temple (This is one of the arupadai veedu Murugan temple) later you can visit Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai nayak palace. Evening visit Pazhamudhircholai (This is one of the Arupadai veedu Murugan temple) over night stay at Madurai.

The Six Abodes of Murugan are six temples situated in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. These temples were mentioned in Tamil  sangam literature , "Thirumurugatrupadai", written by  Nakkeerar  and in "Thiruppugazh", written by Arunagirinathar. The God is known by different names such as Kartikeya, Kanda, Vadivela and Muruga at various temples. The six aboded are Thiruthani, Swamimalai, Palani, Pazhamudircholai, Thirupparankunram and Thiruchendur.

On your arrival at Chennai, our company representative will welcome and take you for breakfast and short briefing will be made about the tour. We will drive you to Thiruthani and Darshan Subramanya Swamy temple (Uphill) and followed by lunch. We will proceed to Kumbakonam for dinner and overnight stay.

Early breakfast and check out from hotel and drive to Swamimalai and Darshan Swaminatha Swamy temple and followed by lunch. After lunch we move on to reach Madurai for dinner and overnight stay.

GST will be extra and will be charged @ 5% on the mentioned package cost.

The mentioned price is valid only till end of April 2021.

Payment Terms:

The payment terms are as follows:

50% advance payment of the total package cost at the time of booking

Balance 50% payment along with GST should be paid within 7 days before the departure

Booking Policy

Online Booking: You can purchase our services from our sales outlets at Bangalore or Chennai, or you can book your tour/services / payment online through our website. Our website provides the facility making online booking of tours and services. After confirmation in written from us via Email or by in writing.

Booking Amount

For the services contracted, a minimum deposit of 30% of the total cost is to be paid by you to Ravel Roads. The advance is required to hold the booking on confirmed basis.

Balance Payment

The full balance payment is to be paid 10 days prior to the date of start of services. Any booking made within 10 working days of the date of services would be considered as a late booking and for same the full and final payment is required to be made at the time of booking itself.

Note: Apart from above, in case of bookings for special train journeys, hotel or resort bookings during the peak season (Christ-mas, New Year) full payment is required to be made at the time of booking itself.

Payments: All payments are to be paid in behalf of Ravel Roads.

Cancellation / No show / Early Departure Policy:

In case of cancellation of tour or travel services due to any reason, you are requested Please inform us in writing or by Email. Cancellation charges would be effective from the date we receive letter in writing and cancellation charges would be as follows:

Cancellation charges for any mode of transport ticket are applicable as per the rules of the concerned authority.

Air ticket issued on special fare are non-refundable and the guest shall bear cancellation charges.

Group Tours

1. If the reservation is cancelled 30 days prior to the date of arrival – 90% may be refunded (except the transaction charges).

2. If the reservation is cancelled 15 days prior to the date of arrival – 50% may be refunded (except the transaction charges) .

3. If the reservation is cancelled 07 days prior to the date of arrival – 25% may be refunded (except the transaction charges).

If the cancellation is any later than the above stated period or in case of ‘No Show’- No Refund.

No refund or any changes will be accepted at last minute for tour starting or after starting or middle of the tour.

Individual Tours (FIT Tours)

Cancellation policy of Individual tours is subject to changes. It depends upon the cancellation policy of the respective hotels and other service operators your tour is associated with. Different hotels and service operators have different cancellation policies which we are required to abide by. In the unfortunate event of cancellation of trip by guests, we would charge 10% of total booking amount as processing charges +the charges levied by the corresponding service providers.

Of countless temples across Tamil Nadu which are dedicated to Lord Murugan, six are part of an auspicious circuit and are a magnet for thousands of devotees. Together they are known as Arupadai Veedu, that is, the six abodes of Lord Murugan.

Arrive Trichy - Palani

You’ll be met on arrival at Trichy airport and introduced to your driver (the full name of the city is Tiruchirappalli but the vast majority of people use the shortened version) you will be met and get introduced to your driver who will be with your throughout the trip. Begin the journey by visiting Rock Fort Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva. This temple sits on a rock which towers 83 metres above the city and can be reached by a short and not too strenuous climb. From the top of the temple you’ll get a stunning view of entire Trichy city, then visit Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus. The temple claims to be the biggest functioning Hindu Temple in the world. Later drive 3 hours or so to Palani. Overnight in Palani.

Palani - Madurai

Start the day by visiting Arulmigu Dhandayuthapaniswamy Temple. Spend some time in this hilltop temple, then drive to Madurai. This is an important commercial centre, but more importantly a pilgrimage centre with numerous significant temples and other places of interest. Situated in the banks of river Vaigai, Madurai has long been a focal point for Dravidian culture. On reaching Madurai, you’ll be free to relax or, if you wish, head into the city to check out some of the amazing market areas here. In the evening, join our local team on a Food Safari to sample some of the city’s best street food and local restaurants. Overnight in Madurai.

Today you’ll visit one of the crowning glories of temple architecture not just in India but anywhere in the world- Sri Meenakshi. Built over several centuries beginning with work by the Pandya dynasty during the 7th century CE it boasts 12 impressive gopurams (temples towers) within the complex. A major part of Meenakshi Amman Temple is the thousand-pillared hall with a series of individually carved and decorated columns this is a more recent addition, from around the 16th century CE. Here you can visit Brihadishwara, the finest of all the grand Chola dynasty temples in this area. Universally known as the Big Temple (it’s easy to see why) it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and remains an important place for both pilgrimage and social gathering to this day.

Brihadishwara is one of three temples along the Cauvery River which has UNESCO World Heritage listing (the others are somewhat smaller but equally beautiful and are found at Darasuram and Gangakondacholapuram). On the way to Kumbakonam stop at Swamimalai and visit the 4th abode of Murugan. Overnight in Kumbakonam.

Kumbakonam - Chidambaram - Thiruvannamalai

Depart Kumbakonam and drive to Chidambaram in Hindu lore this is where Shiva performed his cosmic dance, T.andava Nritya. Visit the Natrajar temple built by the Cholas in 9th century CE. Driving time today is around 6 hours to Tiruvannamalai. In the evening visit Annamalaiyar Temple, which sits at the foot of the sacred mountain, Arunachala, which represents Shiva’s descent to Earth as a pillar of fire. Overnight in Tiruvannamalai.

Thiruvannamalai - Kanchipuram - Thiruthani

Day 1 : Arrive Trichy - Palani - Madurai (270 Kms - 6 Hrs)

On your first day of arrival, you will be greeted by a tour executive at the outset. As a decorum you will meet your driver who takes you through hotel after freshen up finish breakfast at hotel 7-9am. After breakfast check out from the hotel and comfortable journey to Palani, one of the Arupadai Veedu Murugan temples. After dharshan proceed lunch 12-3pm at outside restaurant. Six Abodes of Murugan (AaruPadai Veedu)

In Tamil Nadu, spread across the length and breadth of this southern state of India, are the six, stunning abodes of Lord Murugan, who is also popularly called as Muruga, Skanda, Kartikeya and Vadivela. Quite famous for their legacy, sanctity and architectural grandeur, these divine temples include Thirupparamkunram, Thiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. In fact, these beautiful holy abodes have found their way into the Tamil Sangam Literature, such as in the works of great Tamil poets Nakkeerar’s ‘Thirumurugatrupadai’ and saint Arunagirinathar’s ‘Thiruppugazh’.

Now let’s get down to explore in detail these six must-visit holy destinations which are known as ‘AaruPadai Veedu’

Thiru Avinankudi Temple or the Palani Temple as it is famously called is located nearly 1500 ft. above the sea level, this striking ancient temple gives a stunning panorama, overlooking the Palani town along with Kodaikanal Hills, Idumban Hill, the Western Ghats, lovely rivers, lush green paddy fields and some educational institutions nestled in between. From here, one can enjoy a fine view of the KurinjiAndavar Temple against the backdrop of the Sun on a clear day, when there is no mist. During the day, Palani is a mesmerising sight to behold with an expansive greenery spread all over while at night the entire hill lit up beautifully dotted with temple and town lights. The deity in this temple is called, Dandayudhapani Swami or the Lord holding a staff. The interesting thing about this sanctum is that the deity has been built of 9 minerals, popularly known as ‘Navapashanam’ and it was created by a yogi, Siddha Bogar, an ardent devotee of Lord Murugan. The deity is shown wearing only a loincloth and having a baton in hand – denoting a universal message to ‘renounce everything to reach the Lord’. While Murugan stands for beauty, the Lord of Kurinji is known for being the God of Youth and Beauty.

This temple consists of 3 ‘Gopurams’ and 3 ‘Praharams’ (or Prahar). The southern side ‘Gopuram’ has five storeys and statutes all over it whereas there are no towers over the remaining two ‘Gopurams’. The Praharams have an interesting arrangement – the first one is located at the foothill, the second one is above, in the middle portion of the hill and the third one is at the top running around the temple. After entering through the ‘Raja Gopuram’ (main entrance) and the ‘KalyanaMandapam', one gets to visit the temple of Goddess Sakti along with other important shrines of different deities. There is a special well here called ‘VajraTeethra’. From here one can move upwards of the hill and half way up, there is an elevated area where you can find statues which boast of architectural grandeur, all portraying the legendary stories associated with the Swamimalai temple. After this, on the top you come across the next Praharam and beyond this level, further on top you will reach the main temple. On the first Praharam there are several other temples meant for different deities.

Thiruchendur

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is located on the shores of Bay of Bengal. After defeating the demon Surapadma, the Lord came to this temple to worship Lord Shiva. Most of the temples in Tamil Nadua have the ‘Raja Gopuram’ or the principal entrance in the eastern side. But in this particular temple, the main entrance is in the western side. The reason being that the sea appeared too close in the eastern side and hence the entrance was not built here. The ‘Mela Gopuram’ is built with nine storeys which nearly 137 ft. high above Yalimattam, 65 ft. broad east to west and 90 ft. long north to south. The width of the Gopuram’s top is 20 ft. while the length is around 49 ft. In order to highlight the nine storeys there are 9Kalasams orholy copper pots over the Gopuram’s top.

Thirupparamkunram

Unlike other five temples where the Lord is seen in a standing position, here at Thirupparamkunram he is placed in a wedding setting, sitting along with Deivanai, his consort. On his sides, the Lord has Saraswathi the Goddess of Wisdom and Savithri while the Creator Brahma, the King of Devas Indira and Narada Muni stand as witnesses.Above the Lord, there are the Sun, the Moon and the celestial, skilled singers Gandharvas. The Lord’s vehicles the elephant and sheep are seen below. Since this temple is set in a cave, for safeguarding the natural elements the Lord is applied with ‘Punugu’ a special scented paste alone while only his weapon Vel is used for Abhishekam (the ritual of pouring or sprinkling holy water or any related substances). During the month of Purattasi (which falls between September and October), on the last Saturday, this Vel is then taken to the shrine of KasiViswanatha located in proximity on the hill. As a matter of fact, this temple is touted to be the only place where the Vel is conducted with an Abhishekam. The major significance of the Vel is that the Lord used this particular weapon to defeat a demon called Surapadma and after winning the battle he came to this temple. A beautiful gold chariot has been made exclusively for the temple in recent times. Devotees who are interested to be part of the annual procession – when Lord Murugan’s idol is taken into the gold chariot – should register well in advance.

This is the fifth temple of Lord Murugan among his six army camp houses. The legend goes that the King of Gods Indra got his daughter married to Skanda (the other name of Murugan) and as a dowry presented the Lord with his white elephant, Airavatam. However, after Airavatam left, the wealth of Indra started waning. While Subramanyar was willing to return the elephant, Indra refused to have it back because he didn’t want to break the ritual of accepting his own gift. But, he put forth a suggestion that Airavatam must face his direction. That’s why the elephant’s image seen in this temple is facing the east.

Legend also has it that Vasuki, the King of Snakes, after worshipping Lord Murugan at Thanikai had his wounds healed. The wounds were inflicted on his body while he was used as a rope, by devas and demons to churn the Milky Ocean to obtain the Amrita (immortality nectar) while Mantotra mountain served as the base for churning.

Similar it is said that, at Tanikai, Sage Agasthiyar Muni worshipped the Lord, who blessed him with the gift of Tamil language.

Pazhamudircholai

The sixth and final temple of Lord Murugan is situated around 25 Kms, north of Madurai over a hill top and densely covered by forests. Story has it that Goddess Valli use to live among these in a shrine while there is a separate temple having the Lord Murugan, and Deivayani. Also here is a temple of Lord Ganesha. A temple tower is located here which is inhabited by playful monkeys.

Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple lies in close proximity to the Vishnu shrine of AzhagarKovil. The shrine is accessible via two-wheeler, car, bus or van. In fact there is a facility for bus shuttle every twenty minutes from the foothill of this temple and it takes around fifteen minutes to reach it. The place is abundant of flowers, vegetables and fruits.

Above Pazhamudhircholai, there is a small shrine around which local tribes reside. It is a rich and fertile terrain comprising of various rare herbs as well as natural springs.

Itinerary Details

Arupadai Veedu tour begins with your arrival at Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.

We pick you from the airport/railway station and escort you to Thiruthani , where one of the 6 holy abodes is located. Thiruthani (or Tiruttani) Murugan Temple is located on a hillock and is accessible by climbing 365 steps (representing days of a year) or via a motorable road. It was here that Lord Kartikeya rested and attained peace after war with the demon king Surapadman and married one of his two consorts named Valli.

Several other legends state that the divine place was visited by Lord Rama and Arjuna, one of the 5 Pandavas. Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma too worshipped Subramaniya here.

Start an early morning drive to Swamimalai. The town has Swamimalai Murugan Temple located over a hillock and accessible via 60 steps (each named after a Tamil year).

It was here that Kartikeya imprisoned Lord Brahma who could not explain the meaning of the Pranav Mantra ‘Om’. When Lord Shiva (Kartikeya’s father) tried to convince him and asked him the meaning of the mantra, he explained it like a guru (teacher). Lord Shiva was impressed and praised him as Swaminatha Swami (Teacher of Shiva).

This is the reason that Murugan’s shrine is atop the hill while Shiva’s shrine is at the foot.

Leave Kumbakonam to visit the third Murugan temple at Palani. Located over a hill is the Palani Dhandayutapani Temple where Lord Murugan is worshipped as the one carrying dhanda (staff) yuta (weapon) in pani (hands).

It was here that Kartikeya resided as a hermit and meditated after he was tricked by his brother Lord Ganesha to win a divine fruit of wisdom.

Today, you will visit the two of the six Murugan temples. First, visit Tirupparankunram Murugan Temple (about 8 km. from Madurai), known for its inimitably beautiful architecture. It was here that Murugan married his second consort named Deivayanai, the daughter of God Indra.

On arrival, pray at the temple and then you would love to discover the hypnotic rock-cut architecture and other impressive arts at every inch of the temple.

Later, drive to Pazhamudircholai (about 24 km. from Madurai) where the 5th Murugan Temple is located on a hill amidst dense jungles and fruit orchards. It was here that Murugan tested his ardent follower Avvaiyar.

On arrival, pray at the temple and explore its architecture. Overnight stay at Madurai.

Located on the sandal mountain remains near the coast, Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is the place lord Murugan fought with and defeated the demon king Surapadman and also worshipped Lord Shiva.

• Thiruthani Murugan Temple - The sacred pond, Thiruthani Saravanapoikai, at the foot of the hill, has curative power. The water is greatly enriched with sulphur, iron and other minerals. The holy enriched water treats both mental and physical illness.
• Swamimalai Temple - The temple has a beautiful golden chariot made up of seven kilos of gold, besides metals like copper and 85 kilos of silver. The chariot is beautifully illuminated with electric bulbs. On paying up Rs. 1001, devotees can take the deity out in a procession in the golden chariot around the outer corridor. The devotees are then given a box of prasadam, shawl, and a silver pot.
• Pazhamudircholai Temple - Along with Lord Muruga two of his divine consorts - Goddesses Deivayanai and Valli are also worshipped as well. Most devotees come to this temple to seek blessing for academic excellence, child prayers, and marriage.

We checked into the first hotel, Hotel Presidency Cochin, which was conveniently close to the airport, making it easy to reach after our 4-hour-plus flight. The room was comfortable but did not quite meet the standards of a 4-star hotel. The breakfast could be improved with more variety, so we would rate it 7/10. Our day began with a visit to Athirapally Waterfall, which is not recommended for elderly people. The waterfall view was beautiful. We then checked into The Leaf Munnar for a 2-day stay. This was one of the best resorts we experienced during our 6-day tour. The staffs were very friendly and welcomed us in traditional ways. The resort offered a variety of evening activities, including complimentary tea and coffee. We celebrated our son's birthday at the resort restaurant, where the food, especially the chili fish, was delicious. The breakfast spread was diverse. The next day, we enjoyed a jeep safari and had the opportunity to participate in Sivarathiri prayers at Mahadeva Temple, as it coincided with the festival. We also visited Ripple Munnar, Ripper Waterfall, Ponmudi Dam, Echo Point Munnar, Ponmudi Viewpoint, and Hanging Bridge Ponmudi. We then visited the Museum & Plantation (Kannan Devan Hills Plantations) and had a refreshing drink of Nonggu on the way to our next stop. We also experienced Kathakali & Kalaripayattu martial arts, which was amazing. Our last stop of the day was Prakrithi Multi-Cuisine Restaurant, where we received excellent service and enjoyed delicious food. The restaurant caters to a variety of tastes, and the staffs were attentive and provided excellent service. On the next day when check-our from the resort the staff even took a picture of us in front of the hotel, printed it on a hotel's paper photo frame card for us to keep as a memory. We highly recommend this resort. Next, we travelled to Thekkady, where we started our tour with a hot air balloon ride in Munnar. It was a nice experience, although we felt that the 600 INR paid for 20 soft copy photos was not worth it, as only 4 out of 10 pictures were good. On our way to Periyar Spices & Ayurvedic Garden, we saw Vandanmedu Ganapathi. We had a good lunch at a restaurant, although we unfortunately did not remember its name. We then proceeded with an elephant safari, which was worth the price. It was a sweet memory when the elephant blessed us. We checked into Wild Avenue Resort & Spa, which we do not recommend. The lift did not function properly, there were network and Wi-Fi issues due to poor room range, and the electricity tripped three times. After 7 pm, we couldn't even go outside near the swimming pool due to a lot of mosquitoes. Our journey continued to the Boathouse in Alleppey, where we had another delightful stay. The owner and chef were polite, the food was delicious, and the luxury houseboat made our vacation very comfortable. We plan to return here soon. On the last day, we checked out and visited Chottanikkara Bhagavathi Amman Temple, followed by lunch at Dhe Puttu Cochin, which offered a great variety of food, excellent hospitality, value for money, and a great ambiance. It is a must-try restaurant in Kochi. We then went shopping at Seematti Kochi, which provided a great shopping experience. Our driver, Eltin's brother, was also superb and never seemed tired of taking us wherever we wanted to go. His friendly and approachable demeanour made our tour enjoyable. Arupadai Veedu (6 Abodes of Lord Murugan)

These are the six Abodes of Lord Murugan, also known as Arupadai Veedu and considered to be sacred by the devotees of Lord Murugan. All the 6 temples are located in the state of Tamil Nadu. For information on the other temples of India go here .

1. Thiruparankundram – This Murugan temple is located on the outskirts of Madurai on a hill where Lord Murugan married Indra’s daughter Devayani. This is the first of the Arupadaiveedu (armory house) and the only temple where Abhishekam is performed for Vel instead of Lord Murugan.

2. Thiruchendur – This is the only Murugan temple out of the 6 that is situated in seashore and rest of the 5 are on hills. Furthermore, Thiruchendur is the only place where Lord Murugan with his army stayed, when he went to destroy Demon Soorapadman.

3. Palani – Palani also called Dhandayuthapani Swamy is situated in Dindigul District and is around 100 kms from Madurai. The temple is on a hill top and has 690 steps. One can also use the ropeway available to go to the top of the hill. This is believed to be the place where Murugan resided after feud with his family over a divine fruit. The deity is in a meditating state.

4. Swamimalai – This temple is situated 5 kms from Kumbakonam and is the 4th of the 6 abodes and is located on an artificial hill. Equally important, temple is believed to be the place where Lord Murugan is regarded to have explained the essence of the Pranava mantra “OM” to his father Lord Siva.

5. Thiruttani – This temple is situated around 75 kms from Chennai on a hill and has 365 steps. It is believed that Lord Murugan married Valli in this place. It is also in the route from Kanchi to Tirupati.

6. Pazhamudircholai – This is situated around 20 kms from Madurai and is located on the Solaimalai hill. Out of the six Arupadai Veedu temples, this is the only place where he is worshipped with his consorts Valli and Devayani.

Day 1 Chennai

Pick up from Chennai airport/railway station and check into the hotel. Today, proceed for a sightseeing of Chennai. Visit Kapalessshwara temple, Sri Parthasarathy Temple, St. Thomas Mount – a church built on the hilltop, Guindy park, Anna Memorial, San Thoma Basilica, the National Art Gallery. Return to the hotel and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 2 Chennai – Tiruthani- Chennai

Today, drive to Tiruthani. Visit the beautiful temple of Lord Muruga which crowns a single rock of 700 feet above from the sea level. It is situated amidst a range of hills with a dramatic panoramic view. After the Darshan of Lord Thanikachalam drive back to Chennai. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 3 Chennai- Swamimalai - Tanjore

Today, proceed to Swamimalai. Visit Swami Malai Murugan temple – one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan. Then drive to Tanjore and check into the hotel. Thereafter proceed to visit Brihandeswara’- 1000+ years old shrine, built by the esteemed Chola emperor Rajaraja and a fine masterpiece of Chola-styled architecture. Later, visit Thanjavur Palace, Royal Museum and Art Gallery. Return to the hotel and overnight stay at hotel.

Day 4 Tanjore – Thirchendur/ Tirunelveli

Check out from the hotel and proceed to Thirchendur. Visit Tiruchendur Murugan temple- one of the foremost spiritual centres dedicated to Lord Muruga. With its lofty tower of about 140 feet, it has a holy past dating back to 2,000 years. Thiruchendur is said to be second in importance among his six abodes. After the darshan, return to the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 5 Thirchendur- Madurai

Today, drive to Madurai- an extremely sacred city. Enroute visit the Tiruparankundram temple- a cave temple dedicated to the element of earth. It is one among Arupadai Veedu. Check-into the hotel at Madurai and in the afternoon visit the Palamudircholai Murugan temple and then continue to visit Meenakshi Amman temple- one of the biggest temples in India. Visit the temple complex with 12 gopurams, The thousand pillared hall, The musical granite pillars which produce different musical notes. Watch the light and sound show and return to the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 6 Madurai - Palani

Today, proceed to Palani. Visit Andavar temple. The idol of Palani Andavar is said to have been made of Navapashanam (a combination of Veeram, Pooram, Rasam, Jathilingam, Kandagam, Gauri Pasanam, Vellai Pasanam, Mridharsingh, Silasat), by a Siddhar called Bhogar. It is also claimed by many that the materials of abhisheka like milk, sandal paste, etc., attain medicinal properties on being poured over Lord Palaniandavars idol and they have cured many diseases when taken by the patients. Visit hill temple, Bhogar Samadhi, | Tiru Avinankudi, Periyanayaki Amman, Shanmuga Nadi. Return to the hotel and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 7 Leave Palani

Check out from the hotel and proceed to Chennai airport/railway station for your onward journey.

Lord Murugan's Aarupadai Veedu

1. subramanya swamy temple at thiruparankunram                         .

Located on the outskirts of Madurai on a hillock where Lord Murugan married Indran's daughter Deivanai. This is the first of the Arupadaiveedu (armory house). Of the 6 Padai Veedu temples, this is the only temple where abishekam is performed for Vel instead of Lord Murugan. The Lord is praised by Saints Nakkeerar and Arunagirinathar.

2.  Subramanya Swamy Temple at Thiruchendur

Out of the Six Padai Veedu of Lord Murugan, Thiruchendur alone is situated in the seashore and the rest are all situated in hills. Where the Head (Commander-in-chief) goes for battle and stays with his army is called "Padai Veedu". Hence, Thiruchendur is the only place where Lord Murugan with his army stayed, when he went to destroy Demon Soorapadman. The temple commemorates the event, "Soorasamharam" in a grand manner every year.

3. Dandayuthapani Swamy Temple at Pazhani

Pazhani (Palani) is situated in Dindigul District, on the Palani hill bottom (Malai Adivaram) called Thiruaavinankudi, where the temple deity is known as "Kuzhanthai Velayuthaswami". Palani also has the scriptural name as Pothigai.

The legend is that this lord was worshipped by Goddess Lakshmi ('Thiru' in Tamil), the sacred cow Kamadhenu ('Aa' in Tamil), the sun God Suryan ('Inan' in Tamil), the earth goddess ('ku' in Tamil), and the fire god Agni ('Di' in Tamil), hence the place called "Thiruaavinankudi". 

The hill top temple has 690 steps where "Dhandayuthapani" is the main deity, in a meditating state, carrying a staff ('danda') as weapon ('ayutha') in his hands ('pani'). Here, the main deity is made out of Navabashanam and was created and established by Siddhar Bhogar.

Great Tamil poet Avvaiyar, known not only for her poetic excellence but also for wisdom, called Murugan "Pazham Nee" so the place came to be known as Pazhani.

This is the place where Murugan resided after his feud with his family over a divine fruit.

4.  Swaminatha Swamy Temple at Swamimalai

5 kms away from Kumbakonam, the temple is built on an artificial hill. There are 60 steps to reach the hill temple representing the 60 Tamil Years. The temple commemorates the incident where Murugan explained the essence of the pranava mantram "Om" to his father Lord Shiva. Swamimalai is the 4 th Padiaveedu of Lord Murugan.  As the Lord was a Guru to his father Lord Shiva, the place is revered as Gurumalai and Swamimalai.

5.  Subramanya Swamy Temple at Thiruthani

75 kms from Chennai, Murugan reclaimed his inner peace after waging a war with Demon Soorapadman. The hill temple has 365 steps representing the days of a year Lord Murugan met Valli near to this place and married her in this place. The place was called Thiruthanigai earlier and the name now changed as Thiruthani.

6.  Subramanya Swamy Temple at Pazhamudircholai

20 kms from Madurai and located on Solaimalai hill with a holy stream nearby called "Nupura Gangai". Out of the six Arupadai Veedu temples, this is the only place where he graces the devotees with his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

Also, this is the historical place where the Lord played with the great Tamil poetess Avvaiyar asking her what fruit she wished, cooked or uncooked – Sutta Pazham or Sudadha Pazham.

1. Thiruparankundram

Importance : Lord Murugan’s Marriage

Lord Murugan Called : Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy

District : Madurai

Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Thiruparankundram is the first temple of Arupadai Veedu . Lord Muruga is worshipped as Subramaniyan at this shrine on the outskirts of Madurai.

The temple is a cave temple on a hill that was built in the 8th century by a king named Maravarman Sundara Pandiyan. 

The location is thought to be where Murugan married Deivayanai, the daughter of Lord Indra, as a thank you for Murugan’s victory over the demon king Surapadman.

2. Tiruchendur

Importance : Destroying the asura Surapadman

Lord Murugan Called : Senthinathan

District : Thoothukudi (formerly Tuticorin)

The second Arupadaiveedu is the Thiruchendur Murugan temple. The shrine was built to honor Murugan’s victory over the demon king Surapadman. It is the only temple dedicated to Muruga which is located near a seashore, as the other five are in hilly regions.

According to legend, after the death of Surapadman, Lord Muruga wanted to thank his father Shiva, so the divine architect Mayan was summoned and the shrine was constructed. Muruga can be seen in the posture of praying to his father.

3. Palani (Pazhani)

Importance : Lost the Gnana Pazham

Lord Murugan Called : Dhandayuthapani Swamy

District : Dindigul

Palani (Thiruaavinankudi) Murugan temple is the third Arupadai Veedu of 6 houses of Lord Murugan.

According to legend, Shiva decided to hold a competition between his two sons, Ganesha and Muruga, when Sage Narada visited Lord Shiva in his abode and presented him with a fruit known as the fruit of knowledge. 

The fruit would be given to the one who arrives first after surrounding the globe. Muruga accepts the challenge and begins his journey around the world on his vahana, the peacock.

Whereas, Ganesha told Shiva that his parents are his world, and would walk around them. As a result, Ganesha was the winner, and Shiva bestowed the fruit upon him.

When Muruga returned, he came to know that his elder brother had already won the fruit, disappointed Muruga left the Kailash and stood atop the Palani Hills.

4. Swamimalai

Importance : Preaching the Pranava Mantra “OM”

Lord Murugan Called : Balamurugan & Swaminatha Swami

District : Thanjavur

The fourth Arupadai Veedu is Swamimalai. It is also known as Swaminatha Swamy Temple and is located near the temple town of Kumbakonam.

The temple is regarded as the location where Muruga taught his father Shiva the meaning of the Pranava Mantra “OM”. As a result, the location is home to the one-of-a-kind form in which the son is the teacher and the father is the student.

Another distinction is that his vehicle, rather than the peacock in the sanctum, is an elephant; it is believed that the elephant is Airavatha, which was given to Muruga by Indra.

5. Tiruthani

Importance : Marriage with Sri Valli

Lord Murugan Called : Sri Subrahmanya Swami

District : Tiruvallur

Many stories are associated with this temple.

According to a legend, Indra gave Muruga his daughter Devayani to marry and gave him his elephant Airavata as a gift. When Indra noticed that his wealth was shrinking after Airavata left, Muruga offered to return the elephant, but Indra refused and insisted that the elephant face his direction, so the image of the elephant in the temple also faces the east rather than the deity.

In another scripture, Muruga is said to have rested atop the hill to calm himself down after killing the demon king Surapadman at Thiruchendur. And he met Valli and fell in love with her then the marriage between Lord Murugan and Sri Valli took place in this temple.

6. Pazhamudircholai

Importance : Darshan to devotees with both his consorts

Lord Murugan Called : Solaimalai Murugan & Kurinji Nilam Kizhavan

The Vel, Lord Muruga’s weapon, has been worshipped as the presiding deity in the shrine since time immemorial. 

Lord Murugan is known as Kurinji Nilam Kizhavan in this temple, and he is accompanied by his consorts Valli and Devayani, the only temple among the six abodes where Murugan alongside his consorts blesses his devotees.
