Key Takeaways

  • The only way to see Antelope Canyon is with a guided tour.
  • Tours go to the Upper Canyon (which is most poular), Lower Canyon or Canyon X.
  • Most tours depart from Page, Arizona, but you can also book day trips from Las Vegas and Sedona.
  • When booking your tour, keep in mind that Antelope Canyon follows daylight saving time, unlike the rest of Arizona.

Known for its labyrinthine, seemingly undulating sandstone walls and the beams of sunlight that shine into them, Arizona's Antelope Canyon is a magnet for photographers and tourists traveling through the American Southwest.

The famous landmark forms part of Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park in the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. As such, the Navajo Nation requires that visitors are led by authorized guides, who provide tours of the Upper Canyon, Lower Canyon and Canyon X. These tours depart from or close to Page, Arizona, though you can also find Antelope Canyon tours from Sedona and Las Vegas .

Note: Most of Arizona does not follow daylight saving time, though the Navajo Nation, where Antelope Canyon is located, does. Be sure to take this into account when planning your visit.

Upper Antelope Canyon Tours

Lower antelope canyon tours, antelope canyon x tours, antelope canyon tours from las vegas, antelope canyon tours from sedona, upper vs. lower antelope canyon.

Before choosing a tour, you'll need to decide which part of the canyon you'd like to see.

The terrain of the Upper Canyon is more accessible for most tourists and is, therefore, busier. Exploring the Lower Canyon , in contrast, requires visitors to have some degree of endurance, as travelers must climb and descend several staircases. Canyon X is less popular, but equally beautiful.

How to Get to Antelope Canyon

Upper Canyon: Companies that provide tours of the Upper Canyon are all based in or near Page, Arizona (where Antelope Canyon is located), and provide transportation. Travelers will need to drive to Page, as there is no public transportation. Drivers coming from the north or south can take Route 89, drivers from the west can take Route 89A, and visitors commuting from the east can take Route 98.

Lower Canyon: Companies serving the Lower Canyon are located within walking distance of the canyon's entrance; therefore, they do not provide transportation to or from Page. Travelers on a Lower Canyon tour will need to drive to the tour operator's location. These companies are about 5 miles east of Page.

Best Antelope Canyon Tours

Several local companies provide guided tours of Upper Antelope Canyon. Because the Upper Canyon is easiest to walk through, it is also quite popular, especially at peak times during the summer. Considering this, making tour reservations well in advance is highly recommended. No matter which tour you pick, you're guaranteed to see incredible rock formations in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Best Antelope Canyon Tours

Two companies lead excursions through Lower Antelope Canyon. The path inside the Lower Canyon can be quite narrow, which may be an issue for visitors uncomfortable with confined spaces. Because of the relatively rugged nature of the terrain, pregnant people and those with heart or joint problems might want to skip these excursions. Along with a rigorous hike, participants on these tours will be surrounded by beautiful scenery and smooth, fabric-like walls throughout their trip.

Ken's Tours – General Tour

Price: Adults from $55; kids from $35 Duration: 1 hour

The General Tour offered by Ken's Tours lasts approximately one hour, during which groups of up to 10 tour-takers will hike about 1 mile. Tours depart daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you'll need to arrive 30 minutes before departure to check in.

For more information about Navajo culture, book the Deluxe Tour. You'll not only spend an hour in the canyon, but you'll also visit the Hózhǫ́ Haz'ą́ Heritage Site and enjoy a meal. This tour costs approximately $135 per person. These tours depart five times daily (three in the morning and two in the afternoon). Guides are frequently described as informative and friendly and the scenery as unsurpassable.

Dixie's Lower Antelope Canyon Tours – Lower Antelope Canyon Hiking Tour

Price: Adults from $55; kids from $35 Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

These hikes, which travelers say are led by knowledgeable and professional guides, usually last 60 to 90 minutes and cover about a mile. The walks depart from the company's booth near the canyon multiple times each day. Exact departure times vary by season.

Dixie Ellis also offers daylong van tours that combine the Lower Antelope Canyon Tour with visits to the Navajo National Monument and Monument Valley.

Best Antelope Canyon Tours

While the Upper and Lower portions of Antelope Canyon receive tons of fanfare, Antelope Canyon X promises stunning views without the hefty crowds. Antelope Canyon X – which gets its name from the X-shaped formation at the top of the canyon – is located within Antelope Canyon, so it still features the same geologic features the Upper and Lower areas are known for, but its relative anonymity makes it less of a tourist magnet.

Antelope Canyon X Taadidiin Tours

Price: Adults from $40; kids from $30 Duration: 1.5 hours

Antelope Canyon X Taadidiin Tours is the only operator running tours of Antelope Canyon X. It operates 1.5-hour small-group hikes through the canyon. Travelers rave about their visits to this site, and are particularly complimentary of the knowledgeable guides. Tours depart at multiple different times daily. Note that an additional $8 hiking permit is required for visitors ages 8 and older.

Photography enthusiasts can sign up for Taadidiin's Photo Tour, which spends three hours in the canyon and permits participants to bring a tripod and a camera bag. Fees start at about $125 per person.

Tour operators offer full and multiday excursions from Las Vegas that include Antelope Canyon as well as national parks and other iconic attractions.

Bindlestiff Tours - 3-Day National Parks Tour

Price: $875 Duration: 3 days

Depart Las Vegas for this three-day, two-night tour through Zion National Park , Bryce Canyon National Park and the Grand Canyon (where you'll have the option to take a helicopter ride ). The small-group tour also visits Monument Valley, with the option to add a Navajo-guided tour of Antelope Canyon.

Prices include transportation, some meals, a choice of camping or hotel accommodations at the Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan, camping equipment and national park entrance fees. Children must be at least 5 years old to join the tour.

Coexist West Coast - Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend

Travelers have a choice between the Lower Canyon and Canyon X on this full-day tour from Las Vegas. Following your visit to Antelope Canyon – which is led by a certified Navajo guide – you'll head to nearby Horseshoe Bend for a short hike and more stellar views. Recent travelers appreciate the small group size of these tours, as well as the friendly guides.

Tour prices include round-trip transportation from Las Vegas hotels , attraction entrance fees and water.

Antelope Canyon is roughly three hours from Sedona, making it a great day trip. Many tour operators offer transportation from both Sedona and nearby Flagstaff.

Lunch at a sit-down restaurant is also included in the tour price.

Tours for Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is one of the most recognized slot canyons in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land just east of Page, AZ. Antelope Canyon includes two separate, scenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as "Upper Antelope Canyon" or "The Crack"; and "Lower Antelope Canyon" or "The Corkscrew". The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means "the place where water runs through rocks". Lower Antelope Canyon is Hazdistazí, called "Hasdestwazi" by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department, or "spiral rock arches". Antelope Canyon was formed primarily by flash flood erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, as well other sub-aerial processes such as heavy rain fall during monsoon season. Over time, the erosion created corridors that continue to grow wider as the hard edges of the stone gets smoother to form the characterisic flowing shapes in the rock. The sunlight in this slot canyon creeps into the dark passageways from above in the form of what appears to be etherial beams of light. It is for this reason that Antelope Canyon has become many photographers' dream subject.

antelope canyon tour arizona

Both upper and lower Antelope Canyon can only be viewed and experienced on a guided tour. It is open 365 days a year, but tours are weather dependent. No slot canyon tours are available when risk of a flash flood is present. Therefore, it is best to plan your trip outside of monsoon season, which is generally late June though the month of August. In October of 2006, a flood occurred that lasted 36 hour which caused the Tribal Park Authorities to close Lower Antelope Canyon for five months. Make sure to check the status of your tour before you embark on your journey to the Great Southwest.

There are a few really good reasons to choose the Upper Antelope Canyon tour over the Lower Canyon. Upper Antelope Canyon is the tour where visitors will have the chance to witness the beams of light and sand falling over the rocks like a small waterfall. It's where most of the iconic photographs are taken, and therefore, is the more popular tour of the two canyons. Access is easier as well. This tour is on flat sand and does not require you to climb a ladder like the Lower Antelope Canyon tour does. The downside of choosing an Upper Antelope Canyon tour is that it can get very crowded. If you are sensitive to small spaces, the slot canyon can feel even more tight with the number of people down there, especially during the tours that are during the peak light beam hours (around 12:30-1pm). Also, the price of an Upper Antelope Canyon tour can be double the price of a Lower Antelope Canyon tour. Please note that "Photographer" tours are not available on weekends. It's just too busy and crowded on weekends for photographers to get the shots they desire. Overall, if you're wanting to experience the iconic Antelope Canyon, this is the section of the canyon for you! You can minimize crowds by going off season and during the week. Most Upper Antelope Canyon Sightseeing tours are 1 hour in the canyon and Photographer tours are 2 hours in the canyon.

Lower Antelope Canyon is beautiful and it features the same flowing Navajo sandstone walls, but it does not allow for guest to experience the beams of light nor falling sand as seen in many Antelope Canyon photographs. This section of the canyon attracts less people than Upper Antelope Canyon for a couple of reasons: as mentioned before, it does not allow visitors to experience the iconic beams of light and there is a ladder that requires guests to climb. But if you're the kind of visitor that prefers less crowds and doesn't mind climbing a ladder, a Lower Antelope Canyon tour may be your cup of tea. In addition, the cost of the tour is about half the price of an Upper Antelope Canyon tour! Most Upper Antelope Canyon Sightseeing Tours are 1 hour in the canyon and Photographer Tours are 2 hours in the canyon.

Experience Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend, with private transportation. The original Navajo name Tsé bighánílíní means "the place where water runs through rocks." Antelope Canyon's sculpted sandstone walls offer memorable photo opportunities with a walkable corridor at the bottom of the canyon floor. It was formed by flash flood waters that rushed into the cracks of the Navajo sandstone along with the power of wind erosion. With the daylight dancing through the narrow openings from the top provides multiple kinds of light reflections and colors. This amazing changing color show makes this area a popular destination for photographers and tourists. From the canyon, you will visit an area where the Colorado River makes a 280 degree turn around the Horseshoe bend shape of the rock, hence its name of Horseshoe Bend.

Join us on this hiking tour and explore the grand Antelope Slot Canyon! Hike and kayak with our Lower Antelope Slot Canyon tours! You'll never forget the views and experiences that this tour provides. This tour lets you enjoy kayaking Antelope Canyon away from the enormous crowds and endless heat. Hiking Antelope Canyon you'll see the last hidden gems and unique views that you can only get on this tour! Book now and see for yourself! Enjoy our 4-hour guided hiking and Antelope Canyon kayaking tour. It launches from the Antelope Point Public Launch ramp into the Colorado River channel across from Antelope Island. We use kayaks to glide below the massive cliffs of Antelope Canyon. We follow the canyon cliffs until we reach the northernmost portion of Antelope Canyon, and from there, we begin our incredible hike through the slot canyon. This portion of Antelope Canyon is only accessible by water and by kayak. It is one of the most amazing experiences Lake Powell offers!

Scheduled Meeting Times:

8:30 am Arizona Time

10:30 am Arizona Time

1:30 pm Arizona Time

All times are stated as Arizona Time, the same as Pacific Time, unless you visit from early November to mid-March.

Meeting Location:

We'll meet in the parking area at the Antelope Point Launch Ramp. Directions will be in your confirmation email. (DO NOT Go To Antelope Point Marina!)

Expected Distance Paddled and Requirements:

The Antelope Slot Canyon Hike typically takes a 1-hour round trip ( depending on the lake's water level ) and is approximately a total distance of 1 mile (1.6km). The terrain on the hike is a mixture of rock and sand and is very flat. There will be ample opportunities to rest and take photos.

The paddling is typically 5 miles(10km) round-trip ( depending on the water level ).

Wavy conditions are possible on the 2nd half of this tour.

This tour is suitable for those with all levels of physical fitness.

Participants must have enough upper body strength to re-enter a capsized kayak with assistance from our tour guides; this is especially important in the spring and late fall when the water is cold. The route is along steep canyon walls, so getting out of the water on shore is usually very difficult.

All experience levels, from beginner to advanced, will have a great time on our trips:

We will use double kayaks on all trips.

For this tour, we use sit-on-top kayaks.

On this tour, your feet will get wet, sandy, and possibly muddy. There is some muck at the canyon's end, where you get out of the kayaks. Wear shoes or sports sandals. You can get wet.

From June - October, tours include time for a swim.

During July through mid-September, the possibility of flash floods exists. If morning rain is in the forecast, which is generally very uncommon, the guide may shorten hiking the Antelope Canyon portion of the tour for safety reasons.

There are simple bathroom facilities in the parking lot. Dry Bags are available for rent upon availability.

Our kayak Antelope Canyon tour includes all equipment.

Are you a solo paddler? You may join an existing tour!

All Glen Canyon vehicles are subject to a $30 entrance fee. National Park Annual Passes are accepted. Please visit the National Park Service's website for more information ( prices do not include gratuity for tour guides ).

MEMORABLE TOUR

We toured the Upper Antelope Canyon. Connie was an amazing guide, offering camera tips, history and geography lessons, and making us feel welcome. We really appreciated the respect for the land, beauty, weather, and culture that she conveyed. Truly a memorable tour!

This was worth every penny! The canyon is breathtaking. The tour was well organized. Roman was a great guide. Our group had a few health issues, but he was patient and made it all work by making the drive as unbumpy as possible and offered walking options on the return out of the canyon.

INCREDIBLE TOUR

Unmissable Slot Canyon

You are accompanied into the canyon by a navajo guide who goes to great efforts to assist his group through the canyon. in addition the guide happily helps all his group members by showing the best photographic locations in the canyon and, if you want him to, will actually take the pictures with your own ‘phone. initially, you enter the canyon down a series of steep steps and then, at various points you have to ascend short flights of steep stairs. 4dmweb october 16, 2019 -->.

Antelope Canyon

Walk through monumental sandstone sculptures in Northern Arizona’s pristine slot canyons.

Seeing magnificent slot canyons on the Navajo Nation takes some advance planning. A permit and a tour guide are required to explore this special place. Several authorized tour operators lead small groups to the canyons and share their knowledge about the area’s history and geology. Most visitors choose the Upper Antelope Canyon tours to see taller canyon walls streaked with sunlight. The Lower Antelope Canyon tours are equally impressive, immersing visitors in the swirling embrace of sandstone walls.

While the terrain in the area is mostly flat, sand and sandstone surfaces make hiking more difficult than expected. Upper Antelope Canyon is the easier section to navigate, with ground-level entry to the slot canyons. Upon exiting the canyon, visitors take a 20-minute trek on sandy trails back to the parking area. Lower Antelope Canyon takes more stamina to explore, requiring a longer hike to reach the canyons and several stairways and ladders to get into the dramatic rock formations. Experienced hikers can get more trail time on the Page Rimview Trail, which runs nearly 10 miles and passes dramatic viewpoints overlooking the canyonlands plus Glen Canyon and Lake Powell .

For Photographers

Antelope Canyon is one of the most photographed destinations in the Southwest. Guided tours are offered year-round, but photographers time their visits to arrive at the canyon midday March through October. That’s when the position of the sun creates light shafts that reach the canyon floor and illuminates pink, orange and gold patterns on the canyon walls. Winter colors are more muted but no less spectacular. Upper Antelope Canyon offers photography tours with limited participants so groups can take more time setting up and capturing the perfect shots.

Antelope Canyon

Spend the Night

Most visitors to Antelope Canyon make the city of Page home base for multiple excursions to geologic wonders on the Navajo Nation. Along with the area’s slot canyons, Horseshoe Bend and Vermillion Cliffs offer astonishing photo ops. For those traveling in RVs, Antelope Point Marina located on the Arizona side of Lake Powell has more than 100 sites with full hookups and offers a scenic respite after a day spent exploring the area’s spectacular natural beauty. The marina is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Park and fees apply.

We had a great experience on this tour with Wyatt as our guide. He was very knowledgeable about the canyon and told many stories. He particularly helped all of us take pictures, which was very considerate because I for one didn’t know what my camera could do. I now have great photos. I really like how the tour is run, going in and coming back around on the outside, making it less crowded. Thanks again for a great tour!

The tour of antelope canyon is simply amazing. The canyon pictures turned out beautiful. The customer service and care a 10+. From the very beginning everything flowed seamlessly. Our guide Rob is finely attuned to the needs of the tour group. He was informative, knowledgeable and so gracious. Our time with Rob was well spent. Thank you for sharing antelope canyon with us!

Lemoyne was the most positive enthusiastic tour guide I had ever met. While I was initially unsure about how a tour guide would help explore antelope canyon, I quickly realized it was a must. Between showing us all the silhouettes and the rock formations, Lemoyne made the experience so enjoyable and helped me truly appreciate the wonders of this canyon! Cannot appreciate Tsé Bíghanílíní Tours more!

The tour of Upper Antelope Canyon was one of the best things we did in Page! Our tour guide Rob was wonderful and helped us capture beautiful photos. He also pointed out many shapes of celebrities and characters within the rock formations. I hope in the future they add more talking points about Navajo history and culture though! If you want to get stunning photos of Antelope Canyon, this is the tour company for you! Enjoy!

Our tour guide Bernice on 8/24/2024 was wonderful! Not only she explained the history in details, she also taught us how to set up our iPhones to take the best pictures. In addition, she offered to take many pictures for us using our cameras. The pictures she took for me and my wife looked amazing! I am using it as my Facebook cover photo now. Thank you very much Bernice!!!

it was a tossup between 2 pm with another company or 2:30 with antelope slot canyon tours as we were coming from las vegas. air conditioner in the van didn't work well, it felt more like a sauna more than anything... but driving by other tours' open air shuttle did make us feel less miserable not being showered in sand. our tour felt more like a canyon rorschach test more than anything else, trying to decipher what we're able to see from the canyon. then ended the tour with some ingenuine flute performance. and lots of hustlin' for tips and tips for photos, lol. this is also the only tour company that doesn't allow any cancellation and can only do so with an $10 up charge for "trip protection". nothing felt organic or genuine about the tour, sadly the experience is a once and done for us.

Photo of Jerry C.

Booked the tour a bit late and as there are multiple companies for upper antelope canyon and all of them sound the similar, ended up going with this one. Another selling point was that they had enclosed vans for transport as compared to other companies who have open style in back of pickup trucks. Start to finish is about 1.5 hr including driving to and from, spending a part of driving off road on sands, which heads up may be bumpy (the vans were nice as no dust flying in your face). However, due to the popularity of upper canyon and having to share time slots between companies, my tour guide was very strict on being on time and came across as impatient, which rendered him telling us over and over to move along and while what felt like not having enough time to take pictures. He pointed out interesting rock formations along the way which was nice, but overall felt really rushed and no time to enjoy. The time we went was the 10:20 tour, so around late morning time, saw some beams of sunlight coming down at an angle, and to make the light more visible, the guide in the group behind us started kicking the sand, causing the air in that part of the canyon all dusty and hard to breath.

We loved the upper antelope canyon tour more than the LAC because of our guide Clint. Clint took great pictures and showed my boys cool tricks to try with the sand. Also the upper canyon allows videos but the lower doesn't for some copyright reason. We were grateful for having a covered /air conditioned (albeit weak) van ride versus being in an open van in the heat and dust. We didn't mind paying extra for this company because of the added comfort.

We took the Upper Antelope Canyon tour. Our experience was great. First of all, they use real busses that have air conditioning. I saw other touring companies taking people in open pick up trucks with seats in the back. Our guide, Berenice, was amazing . She was so nice , informative and took some great pics. Didn't feel rushed at all .

From Laeticia at the front desk to our guide Lealand , everyone was super helpful and friendly. Lealand ( our guide) took amazing pics for us and made the whole experience magical. He was very knowledgeable, and explained the history of the canyon with so many fun anecdotes and videos! I would definitely recommend this tour and Lealand!

We did this tour earlier this week for Upper Antelope Canyon and these folks are just great. Our tour guide was engaging, super helpful with photos and clearly loved her job (which just makes it more fun for visitors). Things to know before you go: * This outfit has air conditioned vehicles and if you're visiting when it's hot, you absolutely want that. * The drivers have a lot of fun on the sandy roads into the canyon so be prepared. * You will be VERY DIRTY. We were peppered with sand falling down on us and in retrospect, a mask is a great thing to have. * Let the guides help you with photos. They know what they're doing. * The tour is a very slow walk with groups ahead of and behind you. * The walk through the canyon is very easy but getting out is where it gets a little tougher. There's a steep climb up to a ramp and then many stairs down to the parking lot. I am 6 and 11 months post total knee replacements and managed it. Definitely a great tour and if you hang out near the guide, you'll hear lots of interesting stories.

Upper Antelope is beautiful, and having toured the spectacular lower canyon earlier in the day, both are worth visiting. Though similar, they are a completely different otherworldly experience. No ladders in Upper Antelope, so just about anybody can tour it. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours, including the drive to and from the canyon. The vehicles pull up right to the canyon entrance, and you walk right in. At the canyon exit, there are a series of stairs you ascend, then a short hike on a dirt path, then you decend a series of stairs to the entrance and the vehicles. I think our guide was Joe. He was cool and showed us how to capture great pictures and even showed us how to adjust the setting on our phones to get the best colors. We were the last group of the day, so we took our time. Visited off-season in February. Our group was small and there were no crowds. ;) Be kind and give a cash tip to your guide!

So grateful we were in an air conditioned van on the drive to and from the Upper canyon. Other companies have open jeeps and I can't imagine sitting through a bumpy dusty drive in 100 degrees in July. Our guide Lillian was an expert on canyon history as well as taking cell phone photographs. She was extremely patient and took photos of each group at every turn. I was expecting lots of crowds and maybe 1 good photo if we were lucky but that was not the case during the 10:20 peak time tour to see light beams. Got plenty of great shots! Very smooth online booking and in person check in process.

Antelope Canyon is a destination I've wanted to visit my entire life! Well... that may be a slight overstatement. It has been near the top of my list of places to visit since I first discovered its existence in my 30's. What I didn't know until actually booking a trip was that there is more than one!!! While ANTELOPE CANYON itself is considered just ONE CANYON and extends approximately 30 miles in length, it is broken up into different sections, each with its own unique personality. Our Navajo-born tour guide referred to the canyons as either: A-framed (wider at the canyon floor) H-framed (fairly consistent in width top to bottom) or V-framed (wider at the top and narrow at the floor) There are a dozen sections of Antelope Canyon, but the most popular toured sections of the canyon are Upper, Lower, Secret & Canyon X. We chose to tour UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON. [ THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ] Our tour started at Chief Tsosie Trading Post on Lake Powell Blvd @ 8:15am with check-in and a shuttle bus drive to the canyon entrance. There were several shuttles from Chief Tsosie (5 in total) plus another set of shuttle buses from two other tour companies. Each shuttles passengers entered separately as a single group to avoid bottlenecking. While this was very helpful, each held a considerable amount of people, so taking pictures & trying to soak in the beauty of the space felt rushed. You had only seconds to take a pic & keep it moving so other groups following could enjoy. We happened to be the last Chief Tsosie group to enter the canyon, so we lingered just a tad longer than the others. But you could see the stress our delay caused our guide as he quick-stepped it back to the shuttle. The Upper Canyon was as beautiful as I had hoped. Most likely if you have seen photos of Antelope Canyon, it was of the upper canyon, which is said to be the most photographed. A photo that sold for 6.5 million dollars in 2014 was of a beam of light penetrating Upper Antelope Canyon. However, what I did not know when booking my tour was the light beams you see in many photos are BEST SEEN at certain times of the day as well as certain times of the year. Our early April 8am tour produced no light beams. So if that is your desire, it is better to tour in the summer months around the noon hour (or so we were told). The hike through Upper Antelope Canyon is fairly flat with no ladders, so it is friendly to most anyone who can walk. However, the climb up and over the canyon back to the shuttles requires some stamina. It's made easier with metal grated ramps to get you out of the canyon, but then after a short walk above the canyon you come upon a series of steps leading you back down to the shuttles. The walk through the canyon itself is approx 660 feet from the shuttles to the canyon exit, but going up and over the canyon back to the shuttles adds another 1800 feet or so making the tour about a half mile in length total. Our shuttle ride to the canyon was bumpy, but not jarring. We passed several cows along the way, which was kinda weird! AFTERWARDS we also visited Horseshoe Bend, Marble Canyon & ate @ Grand Canyon Brewery in Page (not included in tour). [ OUR GUIDE ] Lydell was very informative and a wonderful photographer, giving everyone excellent tips on making the most of their phone cameras in low light. He pointed out named formations such as JAWS, ANGEL WINGS and the HEART + the best spots for pics. Part of his conversation alerted me to something I didn't really know: Navajo people do not consider themselves Americans & have their own President and Capital. The Navajo Nation is the largest of all the Native-American reservations. One of the the other Navajo Guides played a flute while inside the canyon, which was pretty awesome! [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] While it was a beautiful experience, I think we would have better enjoyed a private tour for a little more money. I've seen couples on YouTube whom had the entire canyon to themselves for a half hour and could walk back and forth as much as they wanted. We were not allowed to backtrack once we left an area. Most importantly, a private tour would allow more time to soak it all in. I waited 20 years to visit and somehow I didn't expect to be in such a rush through it. In retrospect I would have probably preferred Canyon X or Secret Canyon because they are both longer & less populated. FYI - To be honest, I was shocked hiking the canyon cost ANY money at all! I discovered Wire Pass @ Buckskin Gulch AFTER I booked my tour, which is said to be every bit as spectacular as Antelope Canyon but without the required tour costs. It's a 5.6 mile out and back hike that will likely get your feet wet and requires checking with the weather. Any rain in the forecast makes it a dangerous hike & the 8 mile unpaved road to the trailhead can sometimes be unpassable. It is highest priority for my next visit to the area. OVERALL - 5 stars for beauty, 3 stars for price. 2023 / 5

Step directly into your dream photograph with the Antelope Canyon Express Tour

As you begin your 1 – 1.5-hour adventure (all-walking) with Lower Antelope Canyon Tours, your experience will span roughly 1,800 meters (1.1 miles) round trip. Upon descending down five flights of stairs (35 meters) into the largest cavern of the tour, guests’ will begin their majestic ascent through the kaleidoscope of colors naturally provided by the unique creation of Navajo Sandstone, as a result of rain, wind, and erosion. The numerous echelons throughout the canyon consist of eight uniquely built ladders (with handrails) for safety

The Guides are very knowledgeable and will help you to get the most out what ever equipment you are using to photograph the canyon.  They will also take the time to point out all of the angles for each of the unique rock formations such as the “Lion”,  “The Eagle”, “The Wave and the Lady in the Wind”

Some people say that lighting for Lower Antelope is better in the early and late morning however its always possible to get fantastic photos due to the ever changing rock, atmosphere and Lighting conditions.

Lower Antelope Canyon is shaped like a “V” with a narrow pathway that opens up to the sky.  Whereas Upper Antelope Canyon is shaped like an “A” with a wider pathway that narrows as you approach the top of the canyon.

The most difficult portion of this hike is the initial descent into the canyon via five flights of stairs. However the pace is slow so take your time and you should be ok.

This Otherworldly Canyon In Arizona Has Antelope Canyon-Like Charm Without The Crowds

By: Author Lucas Reynolds

Posted on August 27, 2024

Arizona has long been the home of majestic landscapes that seem as though they’ve been plucked straight from a painting.

Among these, the Antelope Canyon often steals the spotlight with its breathtaking natural beauty.

But what if there existed another gem, equally captivating, yet less crowded?

Enter Secret Canyon in Page, Arizona .

Less traveled and equally awe-inspiring, this canyon offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of more famous locales.

Ready to discover a hidden treasure that rivals Antelope Canyon in beauty and tranquility?

secret canyon 1

Secret Canyon, also known as Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon, is a lesser-known sibling to Antelope Canyon.

Located near the city of Page, this hidden wonder is an extraordinary experience waiting to be uncovered.

The journey to Secret Canyon begins with a scenic drive through the rugged Arizona landscape, leading to an unassuming entrance.

Unlike its more famous counterpart, Secret Canyon remains a sanctuary of peace and natural splendor, untouched by the throngs of tourists.

secret canyon 2

Much like Antelope Canyon, Secret Canyon features smooth curves, narrow passageways, and vibrant colors that make slot canyons such captivating destinations.

Over millions of years, water and wind have sculpted the sandstone into intricate formations that twist and turn, creating a labyrinth of natural beauty.

The walls of the canyon, with their swirling patterns and rich hues of orange, red, and gold, seem to glow in the sunlight, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere.

Every corner of Secret Canyon offers a new and mesmerizing view, making it a photographer’s dream and a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.

secret canyon 3

One of the highlights of Secret Canyon is its intimate setting.

Guided tours are limited to small groups, allowing visitors to fully absorb the quiet majesty of the place.

Without the pressure of large crowds, you can take your time to explore, photograph, and marvel at the intricate details of the rock formations.

The guides are knowledgeable and friendly, eager to share stories and insights about the geology and history of the area.

secret canyon 4

One of the main draws of Secret Canyon is its exclusivity.

Unlike Antelope Canyon, which has become a must-see destination on many travelers’ itineraries and can often feel crowded, Secret Canyon offers a much more private experience.

Tours are limited in size, ensuring that visitors can take their time exploring the canyon without feeling rushed or overwhelmed by large groups.

This makes it an ideal destination for those who want to truly connect with nature and enjoy the serenity of the canyon in solitude or with a small group of friends or family.

Unlike Antelope Canyon, where you might jostle for space with other tourists, Secret Canyon offers a more personal and unhurried experience.

This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and a deeper connection with nature.

The peaceful ambiance allows for moments of reflection and wonder, making it a perfect spot for both seasoned travelers and first-time visitors.

secret canyon 5

The canyon’s beauty isn’t just skin-deep.

It holds a rich history that dates back thousands of years.

The Navajo people, who consider this land sacred, have passed down stories and traditions that add a layer of cultural significance to the experience.

Learning about the canyon’s past and its importance to the indigenous people enhances the visit, providing a deeper appreciation for this natural wonder.

The connection to the Navajo Nation also adds a cultural element to the experience.

Many of the tours are led by Navajo guides who share their knowledge of the land and its history, offering insights into the significance of the canyon and its place within Navajo culture.

This personal touch makes the visit to Secret Canyon even more meaningful, as visitors gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and spiritual importance of the land they are exploring.

secret canyon 6

Navigating through the canyon, you’ll encounter sections that are wider and more open, as well as tight squeezes that require a bit of agility.

These variations in the landscape keep the exploration exciting and engaging.

Every corner turned unveils a new perspective, whether it’s a dramatic rock face or a serene, sunlit chamber.

This dynamic environment makes Secret Canyon a photographer’s paradise, offering endless opportunities to capture stunning images.
