About P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises has been well known and loved in the UK for 175 years. Since 2015, the cruise line has also become increasingly established on the German market. Guests appreciate the traditional high sea experience with a typically British flair. Knowledge of the English language is important to get on board. The fleet of P&O Cruises is child friendly, except the Arcadia and the Oriana that are ships for adults only. The currency on all ships is the British pound.

The new ship of the fleet is called Iona and was put into service in 2021. The ship was built by the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. With 5200 passengers, a length of more than 300 metres and 19 decks it is the biggest cruise ship which has been built especially for the British market yet. According to the new technology of using liquified natural gas (LNG) instead of the traditional motor fuel the ship is more eco-friendly. 

Everyone who plans a cruise with Iona can select the favourite stateroom of a very high variety of categories. There are 32 different categories including interior, oceanview and balcony staterooms as well as mini suites and suites. Besides that, P&O Cruises offers interior and balcony staterooms for single travellers. The design of the staterooms is influenced by the sea and the beach. Light blue painted walls and golden and white accessories cause a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. If you like to have a coffee directly after waking up, you can prepare it in the stateroom by yourself. Something very special are the Conservatory Mini Suites. These mini suites are equipped with a conservatory which can be connected to the room, to the balcony or to both at the same time. The cream coloured furniture of the suites and the with marble designed bathrooms make the suites more special. To fulfill the special wishes like a dinner on the private sun deck there is a private butler for the guests who booked a suite.

Atmosphere on Board

A cruise with Iona can be described as a traditional cruise experience combined with a modern and amazing style. The atmosphere is inspired by the british flair and traditions. Therefore, every afternoon the typically british afternoon tea is served. In general, the life aboard is relaxed and casual and the familiar atmosphere makes the cruise memorable. Casual clothing for the day adjusted to the destination and more formal evening attire are recommended for a cruise with P&O Cruises.

Food and Beverages

Aboard there are 17 different restaurant which give you the opportunity to try the different cuisines from all over the world. In The Quays you can try the exotic food from the buffet. If you prefer a tasty steak, we recommend The Keel & Cow. A really stylish and comfortable place to end the day with an excellent glass of wine is The Glass House on deck 7. During the daytime the bars and lounges as well as the Gelateria are the favourite locations of many guests. In the evenings the dinner is served in different restaurants at two different dining times.

Entertainment, Sports and Relaxation

The new Sky Dome on deck 16 and 17 is the place to be. In the afternoon one can relax on the sun beds or in one of 18 jacuzzis before the party will start in the evening. The inside pool can be changed into a stage where singers and dancers present their fascinating shows. The Grand Atrium, also called heart of the ship, is the central location aboard. Around the Grand Atrium there are many smaller restaurants and bars. Children can play in The Reef, a club which is divided up into different groups of age and consists of inside and outside areas. For swimming fans there is a high number of swimming pools and jacuzzis. In The Retreat massages and other wellness treatments are offered. Who likes to run in the morning can make one round on the outside jogging track while enjoying the fresh air of the sea. In addition, there are sports classes offered in the sports area on deck 5.

Our Summary

The casual and friendly impression of the design, the culinary diversity and the entertainment programme convince us. Because of the combination of modern elements, new technologies and a traditional cruise experience we are sure that the ship fascinates many guests.

IONA – Current position and Ship details.

MEYER WERFT is building the RINA classified ship, sometimes referred to as Excellence and/or Helios class ships for Carnival The Nova was for Aida, and the Iona for the P&O brand. Fincantieri plant in Monfalcone is building very similar ships for the Costa brand.

The Iona, now a firm favourite as the flagship for P&O is another LNG ship. The gas is cooled to -162 degrees Celcius so it becomes liquefied, hence liquified natural gas. The AidaNova was the first cruise liner to be powered by LNG and the first ship to be awarded the “Blauer Engel” environmental seal by the German government. The Liquid Natural Gas, LNG drive system fully prevents the release of particulate matter and sulphur oxides and significantly reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide. The engines are made at Neptun Meyer in Rostock Germany. 

The shipbuilding specialists at MEYER WERFT laid the keel for Iona in May 2019. Iona accommodates up to 5,200 passengers. It has eight speciality restaurants and four swimming pools. The glazed atrium offers magnificent views over three decks. With a length of 344 metres, Iona will be one of the largest cruise ships in the world.

And there’s more to come, as MEYER WERFT is building a total of two new ships for P&O Cruises. Iona’s sister ship Arvia should embark on its maiden voyage in 2022.

What makes the Iona different from its similar family members? It does not yet have PEPPER ROBOTS like the other ships from Carnival brands. Pepper currently speaks three languages to help in many ways as well as making a dance partner if you so request.

About Us  

Doris Visits is just a little hobby, and a way of helping people research ports and ships. It is our way of giving back as we are on the ships between 6 and 12 times a year as Guest Lecturers. The site is also supported by other guest lecturers.

Why Doris?  It was a character Jean played in a TV show and we started the port guides as a little spin-off. It took over. I mean, rode into town and said this is it.

Who is Jean ?  Jean is a West End and Broadway actress who now has her own one woman show called Royal Mistresses, which she performs at guilds and on ships. Hence, she cruises – a bit. She now presents TV and is known by many cruisers for her Doris Visits port guides.

Who is Stuart?   Featured in a clip in the 2024 Oscars – in the tribute to movie stuntmen – he was the Queen Alien in Aliens. Now, he points the iPhone at Jean when they go and explore ashore. He finished in movies as a director, and now writes cruise thrillers.

The grandchildren who sometimes travel and from their son Luke Aikman. He was the young Colin Firth in Fever Pitch and appeared in Freight. He is now a producer and business entrepreneur. Their daughter helped with the plot of the first four novels and is now writing with comedian Joe Wilkinson.  Laura Aikman is known for being the girlfriend in the Christmas Gavin and Stacey, and Dyan Cannon in Archie. Some grew up with her Saturday show, Mysti.
