Qatar hosts over 3 million visitors in 2023: Qatar Tourism chairman

No Image Caption

DOHA: Chairman of Qatar Tourism Saad bin Ali Al Kharji announced the success of Qatar in hosting over three million tourists from various nationalities during the current year of 2023, confirming that Qatar has become a distinctive tourist destination, which is particularly evident as Qatar holds a record of hosting and organising major global events and tournaments.

This announcement came in his opening speech during the 26th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism, held in Doha, on Friday.

He emphasised Qatar's hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the unprecedented success of its organisation, saying it was a rich experience that can be utilized on the Arab level for the development of the tourism sector.

He highlighted Qatar's organisation and hosting of prominent international events this year, such as the Geneva International Motor Show 2023, held for the first time outside Switzerland, the World Cup of Kiteboarding, and the Expo 2023 Doha for Horticulture, the first international horticulture exhibition in Qatar, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Moreover, the country is preparing to host several events, notably the AFC Asian Cup 2023 and the Web Summit conference to be held in Qatar over the next five years.

The chairman of Qatar Tourism affirmed that under its wise leadership, Qatar spares no effort in developing legislative environments, enhancing infrastructure, facilitating administrative procedures, and taking enhanced measures to boost the tourism sector while remaining committed to its identity, values, and principles.

He also revealed available investment opportunities in the tourism sector for Qatari and foreign investors and entrepreneurs, saying there is an understanding of the added value of the sector within the framework of national economic movement and driving development in Arab countries, which necessitates seizing the opportunities and potentials available in to enhance and diversify the sector.

He added that tourism has been one of the most important drivers of economic growth and sustainable development in many countries worldwide over the past three decades. He noted that enhancing the tourism sector is contingent on ambitious strategies that prioritize tourism and its pivotal role within Qatar's National Vision 2030 and national strategy, acknowledging the importance and capability of the tourism sector to significantly contribute to supporting the national economy.

He further said that today's meeting takes place with immense sorrow felt for Palestinians who face war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli occupation authorities in flagrant violation of international law, humanitarian law, and all religious doctrines and international covenants.

He highlighted that the natural richness of Arab tourism imposes on tourism stakeholders the need for further efforts to activate joint programs, activities, and promotions on a wide scale, aiming to develop and support the tourism sector in Arab countries. He stressed that tourism could not fully grow its capabilities and potential unless there is a collective effort among all relevant parties and sectors in the countries, to enhance Arab investments, facilitate procedures, improve legislative environments, and exchange experiences.

He congratulated the sisterly Kingdom of Bahrain on choosing Manama as the Capital of Gulf Tourism for the year 2024, wishing them success in their tourism sector endeavours.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt Ahmed Issa expressed his appreciation for Qatar hosting the 26th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism.

He added that he was grateful for the warm reception, excellent preparation, and organisation of the meeting, where all the agenda items will be addressed to achieve the desired outcomes amidst the circumstances and challenges facing the Arab region.

He affirmed that the Arab region, during the first nine months of 2023, succeeded in surpassing pre-pandemic figures by more than 20 percent, according to data from the World Tourism Organization. This success was attributed to the substantial demand and facilitation of entry visas in many regional countries, alongside investments in new tourism projects and hosting significant events.

It's worth noting that Qatar witnessed the 33rd Executive Office meeting of the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism and the proceedings of the 26th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism held over two consecutive days.

The Executive Office meeting discussed various topics, including supporting the Palestinian economy in the tourism sector, the international code for the protection of tourists in the Middle East, enhancing the quality of education and training in the region, developing shared regional tourism products, supporting and developing intra-Arab cooperation in tourism, promoting the culture of the 'Arab tourist' consumer, activating joint tourism efforts, encompassing contemporary Arab tourist destinations, climate change and its impact on the sector, proposing forums to boost tourism, and evaluating nominated capitals for the title of the Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2024.

Qatar National Tourism Council strengthens its tourism offering as it celebrates World Tourism Day

News Published on

To recognise the 40 th anniversary of World Tourism Day, the Qatar National Tourism Council reaffirms the importance of tourism to the country and celebrates the efforts it has made in the years since the Qatar National Vision 2030 was unveiled. While the country continues to make preparations for the reopening of its borders to international visitors, it has maintained a strong focus on bolstering its visitor experience to ensure Qatar is ready to welcome guests to enjoy the country’s enhanced and new attractions.

Qatar National Tourism Council strengthens its tourism offering as it celebrates World Tourism Day

His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, Secretary General of Qatar National Tourism Council and CEO of Qatar Airways, commented, “We are now 12 years into the implementation of the Qatar National Vision 2030, and we are very proud of the progress we have made so far to modernise Qatar and make it a prime tourist destination. This World Tourism Day, we are pleased to report that we are well on track to drive positive, sustainable growth for Qatar in line with our 2030 goal and will make every effort necessary to do so.”

At the close of 2019, Qatar had over 27,000 room keys on offer for visitors to book across its 130 hotel and hotel apartment properties in operation. Since the start of the year, an additional five new properties have opened their doors, including Hilton Doha The Pearl Residences, Double Tree by Hilton Doha Al Saad and Dusit D2.  Currently, there are approximately 112 properties under development, which represents around 22,300 room keys and will almost double the number of rooms available in the country.

Amongst the up and coming new hotel offerings is The Plaza Doha Anantara Hotel & Suites, a palatial hotel complex due to open later this year. With over 220 luxurious rooms and fully serviced suites, a rooftop infinity pool and an exclusive Anantara Spa, guests will have all the luxury and wellness facilities they need for a relaxing, fully pampered “recharge” within the heart of the bustling city of Doha.

Also set to open at the end of 2020 is the exclusive 5-star Pullman Doha West Bay, located amongst the city’s high rises in the buzzing West Bay area. Designed with 375 distinctive guest rooms and suites and an additional 93 in-style serviced apartments, the hotel will be home to no less than nine world class restaurants, each offering guests and visitors a culinary journey from around the world. In true Doha style, guests can unwind at Pullman Fit & Spa, which is fully equipped with an outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, Moroccan hammam and beauty lounge.

While extensive developments across the country continue, the Qatar National Tourism Council is working diligently to ensure international visitors will enjoy the very best in Arabic hospitality during their stay.

To support the country’s drive to enhance its tourism offering, Qatar has invested in a comprehensive training program for tour guides and taxi drivers.  The aim is for each visitor to receive a seamless and personal experience, from the moment they touch down at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Qatar National Tourism Council has worked tirelessly in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and the hospitality and tourism industry to ensure a safe and clean environment for visitors and guests. This May, the country rolled out the Qatar Clean program, a multi-phased, comprehensive initiative that ensures compliance with strict standards for hygiene and cleanliness at all hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions in the country.

By participating in this year’s edition, we look forward to conducting fruitful discussions and exchanges with leading industry experts and officials from the travel and tourism sector in the region. This will support the tourism industry, stimulate demand, and attract more investment both regionally and globally.”

Qatar continues to be a highly attractive world-class tourist destination for GCC visitors. Visitors from the GCC make up a large portion of travellers coming into Qatar, facilitated by multiple points of entry including land, air, and sea. This was seen during the first quarter of the year, when Qatar hosted major events such as the AFC Asian Cup 2023™, the 20th anniversary of the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition, the 13th edition of the Qatar International Food Festival, the Web Summit, and Doha Expo 2023. Qatar welcomed almost 1.7 million visitors in the first quarter of 2024, with 44% being from the GCC. The leading number of visitors was from Saudi Arabia, followed by Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, and UAE. With the highly-anticipated unified GCC tourist visa, Qatar aims to further welcome more visitors from the region and offer them unparalleled touristic experiences with a dedication to Service Excellence. In addition, Qatar Airways, the country’s award-winning national carrier, facilitates seamless travel to the country from 177 international destinations.

The main objective of ATM 2024 is to facilitate networking between travel and tourism industry giants of the Middle East. With over 1,500 exhibitors, attendees from over 150 countries, and over 23, 000 annual visitors, ATM is one of the largest travel and tourism conferences in the world. ATM hosts tourism boards, hotels, airlines, tour operators, technology providers, and more. Held every year in Dubai, ATM 2024 will be running in its 31st edition. One of the largest of its kind, the conference allows thousands in the Middle East’s travel industry to highlight their products, services, and annual achievements and developments.
