Day 1: At Sea

Southampton

Southampton is the gateway to the immensely civilized city of London. There are museums to visit, pubs to try, and shops to browse, ranging from Harrods to open-air markets. There are more parks and green belts here than in any other city in the world. There are also caches of stately squares and noble monuments, holdovers from a time when the island ruled a significant portion of the globe.

Day 3: At Sea

Haugesund and its vicinity present attractions both ancient and modern. History buffs can take a trip back to the 9th century and explore numerous Viking monuments, including the grave of Harold I. It is also home of a 928-foot drydock, which, at its completion in 1979, was the largest in Scandinavia. For those more interested in contemporary Nordic achievment, the port boasts both fish and aluminum processing industries.

Situated along the innermost arm of the Nordfjord, this picturesque village of western Norway is surrounded by some of Scandinavia's most captivating scenery. Here lies the largest glacier in all of Europe, the Jostedal, towering nearly 6,200 feet over a deep valley. Tucked at the end of a fjord, tiny Flam huddles between steep peaks and deep, still water. From its gingerbread rail station, an electric train zigzags through mountaintops and tunnel after tunnel, emerging on the "Roof of Norway." It's an amazing experience. Cruises from Southampton (2023)

Cruises from Southampton in (2023)

MSC Cruises continues its all-year-round presence in the Port of Southampton with its most popular ship in the fleet, and later in the year, a brand new ship will visit for the winter!

As the end of the winter season approaches, MSC Virtuosa will sail her final 7-night roundtrip voyage to Hamburg and then conduct a series of mini-cruises – highlighting the fun you can have on the ship in just three nights!

Finally, at the end of the month, she moves into her first Spring/Summer longer voyage of the season by setting sail to the beautiful Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage which includes a stop in the stunning city of Lisbon, Portugal!

Cruises from Southampton in April 2023

As Spring turns towards Summer, MSC Virtuosa will conduct two 7-night Norwegian Fjords voyages visiting wonderful ports such as Olden (home of the Briksdal Glacier) and Flaam, a beautiful little Norwegian port nestled deep in a fjord – with its own microbrewery!

May is wrapped up with two short mini cruises (3 and 5 nights) with calls to Rotterdam, Cork and Portland between the two of them!

June marks a special one-off voyage for MSC Virtuosa , where she will sail on a fortnight cruise to Iceland and Norway – with a lovely overnight stop in Reykjavik for passengers, before crossing the Norwegian Sea and visiting the popular port of Alesund, followed by Maloy and Flaam before heading back to Southampton.

The second half of June sees MSC Virtuosa heading South, across the English Channel and down towards the Bay of Biscay in two back-to-back voyages to Spain & France – calling at ports such as La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Coruna – a great taster of some warmer weather and European ports.

That wraps up half of the cruises from Southampton in 2023 for MSC – there is still plenty to come, though!

As we move into the school holidays and the peak season for MSC Virtuosa , she will conduct three back-to-back 14-night Mediterranean voyages! The first of which sets sail on the 1st July and heads from Southampton to Toulon (France) – the port has a natural deepwater harbour and is also the home of local fishermen (and restaurants) and also wine-making – make sure you sample the local delicacies whilst there! (sounds like the perfect combination!)

Great Spanish ports on each of the three voyages – make sure you spend some time wandering around Cadiz – you can literally walk into the old city from the ship, and the bustling market and cafes are an ideal way to enjoy some time ashore!

August 2023

This month sees the return of MSC Virtuosa back to the Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage, followed by a 2-night mini-cruise to Guernsey (which will certainly be a party event if you are going!) and then a 7-night voyage to Norway – whilst you may have missed the Midnight Sun by this point in the year – it will still be very light with daylight stretching from 4am until around 11pm each day!

September 2023

In September, MSC Virtuosa will first head back to Norway for the last time in 2023 on a 7-night voyage before returning and heading to the Canary Islands – this time on an extended 14-night voyage which also calls in at Casablanca (Morroco) and Cadiz (Spain) en-route to the Canary Islands and Madeira.

On her return, she will conduct a short 3-night mini-cruise to Rotterdam and back and then a further 4-night mini-cruise to Cork and Portland, before setting sail on a rare 15-night extended Mediterranean voyage on the 30th September! She will call at several Spanish ports during her trip including the ever popular Barcelona!

October 2023

As we head into the final month of MSC Virtuosa’s Southampton 2023 season, she will head to France & Spain once more on a 7-night voyage before conducting a slightly longer than usual mini-cruise (5 nights) which will call at Rotterdam, Cork and Portland – before arriving back into Southampton the 27th October 2023.

Meanwhile, the new sister ship, MSC Euribia , will arrive in Southampton for the first time on the 13th of October – she will officially kick off her Winter 2023/24 season with back-to-back 7-night voyages to Hamburg and other ports each week until April 2024! (The countdown to the Christmas Markets is on!)

27th October 2023 is a special day – mark that date! It will be the first time two MSC Meraviglia-plus class ships have been in Southampton on the same day and the first time that MSC Virtuosa will meet her younger sibling, MSC Euribia .

MSC Euribia will leave on a 7-night voyage to Northern Europe. Meanwhile, some lucky passengers will be boarding MSC Virtuosa for an incredible 27-night journey that will take the ship from Southampton, the Mediterranean Sea and along through the Suez Canal before eventually reaching Dubai where she will spend her Winter 2023/24 season (if you’ve not checked out the itineraries there – you really should!)

MSC Euribia will then continue her weekly 7-night Northern Europe itinerary – a perfect mix of sea days and Northern European ports to pass the winter by!

November 2023

MSC Euribia will continue to call in Southampton weekly during November (four times) as she continues her multi-port and multi-embarkation season. As we head towards the end of the month, some ports will start their Christmas Market season too.

Popular ports such as Hamburg will start their Christmas Markets earlier than others – look out for a full Christmas Market Guide from us soon!

These voyages will be an excellent choice for those looking at getting away for a quick Winter break – cruising before Christmas and outside of the school holidays offers excellent value for money – look out for offers from us nearer the time!

December 2023

Whilst MSC Euribia is again continuing her weekly 7-night voyages to Northern Europe (five times in December she will depart Southampton) – they will be anything but routine!

Expect to see the ship transformed into a Christmas Winter Wonderland – complete with outdoor mini-Christmas market, Gluhwein, hot waffles and more!

Enjoy the Christmas festivities at each port you call into and countdown to the 22nd December where MSC Euribia will perform her maiden Christmas Cruise, followed by the 29th December where you can see in 2024 with MSC Euribia on her first NYE Cruise too!

We hope you enjoyed this roundup of what MSC Cruises offers from Southampton in 2023!

Is there a beach in Southampton?

Thanks to its coastal location, the area areas around Southampton are peppered with beaches, each with their own atmosphere. The closest beach for swimming is Calshot Beach , on the edge of New Forest National Park . This shingle beach is popular with locals thanks to its colourful beach huts and Calshot Activities Centre, a large outdoor activities and watersports hub. The beach is a 30-40-minute drive from central Southampton or an hour-long journey by bus from Southampton Central rail station. A little further south-west down the coast is the beach at Lepe Country Park , a mile-long stretch offering some sand and some stones. It’s ideal for swimming and opular with kite surfers and windsurfers, also offering views out to the Isle of Wight on a clear day. Lepe Country Park is located 30-40 minutes away from Southampton by car. For something a little closer, Western Shore is less than three miles from Southampton city centre. Although not recommended for swimming, Weston Shore has a wide footpath that makes it great for biking and strolling, and the grassy lawn is lovely for picnics. For a classic British seaside resort experience, Bournemouth is a popular escape for Southampton residents, reached via a 35-minute train from Southampton Central or a 45-minute drive on the motorway.

What can I do in Southampton in one day?

Southampton – known as ‘Soton’ by locals – is a popular destination for cruisegoers, both before setting sail and after a trip ends. Fuel up for the day with a traditional English breakfast at a cafe or local pub. Take a stroll through history in the Old Town . The city also boasts more than 90 listed buildings and over 30 ancient monuments, including the Bargate (a 12th-century medieval gatehouse) and Holyrood Church , which was hit by bombs during World War Two . North of the Old Town, the SeaCity Museum offers interactive exhibits about the Titanic and Southampton’s centuries of maritime heritage . Sports fans can watch a Southampton F.C . match at St. Mary’s Stadium , while art-obsessives will appreciate the city’s wealth of galleries. Meanwhile, kids will love Peppa Pig World at Paulton’s theme park . In the evening, stop by the historic Mayflower Theatre to catch a show or head to Oxford Street for convivial bars and restaurants.

How do I get from Southampton Airport to the cruise port?

Southampton Airport is located approximately six miles away from the cruise port. The journey takes 20-30 minutes by taxi, or the Southampton Airport Parkway train station is a few minutes from the airport by foot.

The coldest months are December to February , when average temperatures range from between 5°C to 8°C, although Southampton generally enjoys mild winters and some cool periods during summers, as well as sunshine.

Priority seating for shows and embarkation and disembarkations also. If we ever decide to do MSC again it will 100% be in Yacht Club.

We had dinner in the Opera Restaurant and our two waiters were amazing. They were kind, friendly and professional. They were genuine in how we were, what we had been doing and ensuring that we received the best service. We were on table 934 and all in the restaurant were polite and friendly and the food was amazing. Not one meal was below standard all exceeded so well done to the chef. Our housekeeping responsible for our room did an excellent job our ensuring our room was clean and tidy. The staff that work on the information desk need some recognition for the job they do. The time I went to visit them they were helpful ensured I walked away full satisfied that my queries had been answered. I also witnessed the constant barrage of rudeness and aggression that they receive often and on a daily basis. It was so unfair for them to have to endure this but they all remained professional which they do need to be rewarded for.

DAY 1 02 Sep 2023 Time at Port: from 7 AM to 4 PM

The UK’s largest cruise port and where many will begin their cruise holiday, Southampton has no shortage of maritime and historical attractions. Discover local landmarks on a walking tour including 30 ancient monuments, learn about the tragic story of the Titanic and escape to the great outdoors at the New Forest National Park. With numerous options for seafood dining and even a free art gallery, Southampton is an undoubtedly great destination for a pre or post-cruise stay.

Thing to do

Dedicated to the tragedy of the Titanic, SeaCity Museum excellently portrays the aftermath through interactive exhibits. Featuring a 1:25 scale model of the ship, visitors learn about life onboard as well as the disaster that deeply affected Southampton in 1912.

Thing to do

Home to over 20 aircraft that were integral to the war effort, Solent Sky Museum is dedicated to the history of the RAF. Southampton itself played a large role in producing Supermarine Spitfires, which you’ll learn all about here.

Thing to do

If you’re looking to escape the busy port city, the New Forest National Park is just a short distance away with native New Forest ponies and lush heathland. Visitors can also catch events, activities and workshops throughout the year.

Thing to do

As Southampton’s most important historic building, this restored home holds over 800 years of history after having numerous owners. Now a museum, it showcases many artefacts once belonging to past residents of Southampton, as well as a Tudor House Café.

Thing to do

Since opening in 1939, this free art gallery has showcased exhibitions of sculptures, photography and traditional paintings. Thanks to an ever-changing programme of activities, you’ll find something here that the whole family will enjoy.

Haugesund

Olden

DAY 5 06 Sep 2023 Time at Port: from 7 AM to 3 PM

Found at the end of the magical Nordfjord, Olden has a population of just 505 and is home to some of Norway's most breathtaking glaciers. Each point of interest is within walking distance of the cruise port, including tourist information, cafes and a picturesque old church. Take an excursion to the Briksdal Glacier where you can hike to the glacier viewpoint, or hop on the Loen Skylift to the top of Mount Hoven for unforgettable views of the landscape.
