Captain Planet Announces New Album “Sounds Like Home”

Captain Planet, the accomplished musician and DJ, has announced the impending release of his latest album, “ Sounds Like Home ,” scheduled for May 10th. The new album follows the recent debut of the energetic music video “Pambelé,” featuring the powerful vocals of Jimena. The uplifting lyrics in Spanish convey the message of never looking back and always pushing forward, while simultaneously battling against adversity.

Jimena’s soaring vocals are accompanied by a powerful bass line, wah-wah guitars, and a Hammond organ riff, along with syncopated horn punches, congas, and cowbells. The resulting sound is reminiscent of classic works by legendary artists such as Ray Barretto or WAR, while also incorporating contemporary elements to appeal to modern discerning listeners.

Captain Planet says about “Pambelé”: “ I was staying in a tiny thatched roof hut in the jungle by the side of the Guachaca river, making beats on my laptop with headphones in preparation before meeting up. This beat was one of the first ones I played Jimena and immediately she got the vibe and we started to jam. The song had a triumphant and empowering feel, and then somehow we locked into chanting the name “Pambelé”, who is an iconic Afro-Latin boxer, born in Palenque, who holds a stature similar to Muhammad Ali for many Colombians .”

After a remarkable year of travel and playing DJ sets in over 30 cities across ten countries, Captain Planet returned to the studio to create his fifth and most ambitious album to date. Titled “ Sounds Like Home ,” the album takes a turn toward the organic, retro sounds of musicians who initially inspired him as a young artist. Charlie Wilder, also known as Captain Planet, flexes his composer and bandleader muscles, incorporating horn sections, strings, and acoustic drums, instead of his previously electronic-focused big club sounds.

Captain Planet on ‘Sounds Like Home’: “T he basic concept was to make a record like the ones I constantly pull off my shelves at home and play on the weekends. The records that turn into living room dance parties with my family, the soundtracks while I’m cooking, the music that fills the backyard for lazy hang outs .”

Captain Planet & the Planeteers’ Legacy

Captain planet & the planeteers.

Captain Planet & the Planeteers was a cartoon show produced by Ted Turner & Barbara Pyle and which aired from 1990-1996. In the show, Gaia, the spirit of the planet, assembles a team of five young “planeteers” from nations around the world, who can summon Captain Planet to help them solve ecological and other global problems “by their powers combined.” The show was widely acclaimed for its treatment difficult issues such as pollution, poaching, deforestation, as well as more social issues including drug addiction, HIV/ AIDS, and bullying in a way that educated, entertained, but also activated its young audience. Though it has been off the air for more than two decades, Captain Planet lives on in the minds of many real-world “Planeteers” as a symbol of becoming a superhero for planet Earth.

The Captain Planet Foundation was first established as a corporate foundation to support youth-led efforts inspired by the show. The organization became an independent nonprofit organization in 2001.

Show Mythology

In the  original mythology of the show as imagined by Pyle , Captain Planet was intended to represent more of a metaphor of what is possible when kids work together to solve problems. The show wasn’t about calling up a savior. It was about empowering children to use their own abilities.

Captain Planet, the superhero for our planet

Captain Planet

Captain Planet (voiced by  David Coburn ) is the  title character of the series. In the beginning of the series, Gaia assembles a modern-day team of “ Planeteers ” from several nations. When the modern-day Planeteers combine their powers to summon the elemental warrior, this incarnation takes on the appearance of a superhero, who takes on the superhero-like name of “Captain Planet.” Captain Planet displays a wry sense of humor and often uses puns while taunting the show’s cast of villains. His only weakness is when he comes into contact with sources of pollution.

Gi, the spirit of Earth

The beautiful spirit of Earth, Gaia is the protector of the planet. She feels anguish whenever damage is done to the world, its seas, its atmosphere, or to any living creature. When damage occurs, Gaia spurs the Planeteers into action– kind of an “Eco-Alert Early Warning System.”

The archetypal Earth mother, gaia is a source of wisdom and advice for both Captain Planet and the Planeteers. She helps the identify environmental problems via a series of crystalline screens located on her home base, Hope Island. These “monitors” track the events of the present and can predict their outcome if left unchecked. But no matter what happens, Gaia loves Earth’s children unconditionally. Though sorrow by what they’ve done and worried about the future, she is eternally hopeful that all will turn out for the best.

Planteer Kwame whose element is Earth

This 16-year-old conservationist does everything in his power to save the world’s endangered species. Raised by elders in a remote African village, Kwame is somewhat naive– often with comic results, Quiet but firm, he has the greatest integrity of any of the Planeteers. But his naive idealism, combined with his convictions, sometimes leave him disillusioned with human nature.

With his green thumb, Kwame can grow anything. Though fundamentally serious, he has an impish sense of humor, and can often deliver off-the-wall comments perfectly deadpan. His earthy wisdom provides a firm foundation for the Planeteers.

Kwame’s element is EARTH. He can create small, localized earthquakes, moves rocks, causes holes or furrows to appear in the dirt, and turn mud to solid ground.

Planteer Gi whose element is Water

This 15-year-old Asian girl is a mixture of refined culture and high-tech, high style. She’s a rock’n’roll fan who’s a natural linguist. Bright, sophisticated, stylish, and trendy, Gi is the most flexible Planeteer. Among her companions, she often assumes the leadership role. Although Gi can be impetuous, she’s usually a team player.

Gi’s also an athlete– her favorite sport is surfing– and a student of marine biology. She has a strong scientific understanding of the various ocean ecosystems. At home with the sea and any of its creatures, Gi has a particular fondness for dolphins. She has even learned how to communicate with them.

Gi’s element is WATER. She can control any water source and make it do her bidding.

Planeteer Linka whose element is Wind

A hardworking, far-too-serious 16-year-old who’s straight from eastern Europe, Linka’s the most conservative Planeteer. Her idea of a good time is to curl up with the latest issue of “Advanced Ecology.: Hot tempered and feisty, she is nevertheless a master of logical deduction. She even tends to over-analyze things. Her analytical approach to problem-solving sometimes annoys her other teammates– especially Wheeler. Sparks fly when he and Linka are together. But in spite of their differences, the two teammates genuinely care for each other.

Quick of thought, Linka’s elementis WIND. She can command it to swirl or gust, or create small tornadoes.

Planeteer Wheeler whose element is Fire

This tough, street-wise 17-year-old grew up on the mean streets of Brooklyn. There, he learned to think fast- but act faster. The oldest Planeteer, Wheeler is also the most impulsive, and he frequently acts without thinking. As a result, he’s prone to making mistakes. Wheeler’s biggest challenge is to become more sensitive to others and to learn that the end doesn’t justify the means. Always ready with a glib remark, he sometimes speaks up at inopportune times.  Wheeler me be impetuous, but he has a good heart, and in the end, he usually makes things right.

Wheeler’s element is FIRE. He can create and direct small fires or beams of flame.

Planeteer Ma-Ti whose element is Heart

This 13-year-old South American may be the youngest Planeteer, but he often seems wisest. Raised by Kayapo Indians, Ma-Ti can survive in the wildest jungle. He’s no stranger to the big city either, and he knows a lot about the world outside the Amazon basin. Ma-Ti has an intuitive grasp of ecological principles. And he’s willing to give of himself for the benefit of the whole.

The essence of caring and concern, Ma-Ti serves as the Planeteers’ emotional link to the Earth and humankind. He’s also the closest of the group to Gaia, and tries to keep the Planeteers focused on the spirit of her teachings. Ma-Ti often acts as a cohesive force, working to promote Planeteer unity.

Ma-Ti’s element is HEART, which enables him to communicate telepathically with other Planeteers and with Gaia. He can also communicate with animals, and his empathetic abilities allow him to feel emotions that provide valuable clues during the Planeteers adventures.

In 1990 Captain Planet and the Planeteers launches to worldwide acclaim. The 113-episode series rockets to the top of the charts as the world’s first ever edutainment ‘eco-toon.’ Syndicated in over 220 U.S. markets and in over 100 countries worldwide, it consistently ranks No. 1 in Nielsen ratings.

A Hero For Earth / Season 1, Episode 15

Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, summons four teenagers and a young boy named Ma-Ti from five different corners of the world to help her in the battle to save the planet. For their first assignment, the Planeteers battle Hoggish Greedly, whose oil rig operation is jeopardizing the coastline.

Gone But Not Forgotten: Captain Planet

Atlanta’s weather this winter has been a wild ride. Imagine needing a winter coat in the morning and switching to short sleeves by the afternoon! This isn’t just a recent phenomenon. Last summer was equally extreme, reflecting global trends. According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the city has seen a significant rise in extreme heat days, with about eight more per year compared to 1961. Research also indicates a noticeable shift in the city’s climate profile. Average summer temperatures have climbed 3.3% compared to the past, with 2022 averaging 80.7°F (27.1°C) compared to 77.4°F (25.2°C) in 1970.

Atlanta’s fluctuating temperatures can be attributed to the broader effects of climate change, which increases weather variability, leading to unusual patterns such as warm afternoons following chilly mornings. This inconsistency makes daily life unpredictable and underscores the broader environmental shifts affecting our planet. While groups in the city are actively engaging in initiatives such as UrbanHeatATL, and the city is focusing on sustainable energy solutions such as solar power, climate scientists warn that immediate action is needed to avoid planet-altering tipping points. These tipping points are critical thresholds in the Earth’s system, where beyond, changes become irreversible, leading to drastic impacts on ecosystems, sea levels, and global weather patterns. The loss of polar ice caps or the deforestation of the Amazon could trigger such irreversible changes.

Another example of a tipping point is the melting of the Arctic sea ice, which threatens the habitat of polar bears and other species and accelerates global warming by reducing the amount of sunlight reflected into space. This creates a feedback loop that exacerbates climate change further, demonstrating the interconnectedness of Earth’s systems and the urgent need for concerted global action.

Given this urgency, what’s our solution? We need a hero and not just any hero. Perhaps it’s time to recall a figure from the late 20th century- Captain Planet- a hero who embodies the spirit of environmental action and unity.

Captain Planet and the Gang

Well-muscled and chiseled, Captain Planet (voiced by David Coburn) is literally the Earth’s superhero. His body, made from natural elements, reflects his deep connection to the Earth. His skin, a unique shade of blue, represents the planet’s oceans and sky, while his green mullet and Earth-themed suit emphasize his role as the protector of the environment.

He was the animated star of the eponymous animated series, “Captain Planet and the Planeteers.” His mission was to protect the Earth and promote sustainability. And in contrast to solitary, omnipotent superheroes, Captain Planet championed the notion that individual and collective actions can make a significant difference in environmental conservation.

the planeteers

The Planeteers. Hanna-Barbera

Fighting alongside Captain Planet was a unique ensemble of teenagers from around the globe. Each teen possessed a ring that gave him or her control over one of the elements. Kwame (voiced by LeVar Burton), from Africa, wielded the power of Earth; Wheeler (voiced by Joey Dedio), from North America, controlled fire; Linka (voiced by Kath Soucie), from the Soviet Union (and later Eastern Europe), commanded the wind; Gi (voiced by Janice Kawaye), from Asia, could harness water; and Ma-Ti (voiced by Scott Menville), from South America, had the power of heart. When the Planeteers combined their powers, they could summon Captain Planet.

Other characters rounding out the side of the Planeteers were Gaia (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg), the spirit of the Earth, and Suchi (voiced by Frank Welker), Ma-Ti’s pet spider monkey.

The Bad Guys

One of the show’s most memorable aspects was its zany eco-villain ensemble. Each embodied specific environmental threats, making them walking, talking cautionary tales about mistreating our planet. Characters such as Hoggish Greedly (voiced by Ed Asner) epitomized greed, demonstrating how it fuels environmental destruction for profit, while Dr. (Barbara) Blight (voiced by Meg Ryan from 1990 to 1991 and Mary Kay Bergman from 1992 to 1996) represented the perils of unchecked scientific endeavors. Looten Plunder (voiced by James Coburn in seasons one to three and Ed Gilbert in seasons four to six) was a symbol of the consequences of unsustainable resource exploitation, and Duke Nukem highlighted the dangers associated with nuclear energy and radiation. Verminous Skumm (voiced by Jeff Goldblum in season one, Maurice LaMarche in seasons two to five) and Sly Sludge (voiced by Martin Sheen in seasons one to three and Jim Cummings in seasons four and five) brought to life the issues of urban pollution and waste mismanagement, respectively.

Other villains in the series included Zarm, a former spirit of the planet (voiced by Sting, David Warner, and Malcolm McDowell in various seasons) who represents war and destruction. Captain Pollution (voiced by David Coburn), a polluting counterpart to Captain Planet, appeared in the series to embody the antithesis of environmental protection. Additionally, the Slaughters, a family of poachers featuring Mame Slaughter (voiced by Theresa Saldana and Mitzi McCall), and Stalker Slaughter (voiced by Charlie Adler), represented the dangers of poaching and animal endangerment.

These exaggerated, cartoonish villains were designed to resonate with a younger audience, helping them grasp the serious implications of environmental neglect. Through their conflicts with Captain Planet and the Planeteers, the show illustrated fictional battles and real-world environmental challenges, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility and action in safeguarding the Earth.

Barbara Pyle, one of the creators of the show, said she chose to make the villains buffoonish to avoid casting relatives as villains in children’s eyes.

“That’s one of the reasons we made the bad guys and their plans so ridiculous,” she said in an interview with Grist .

“We tried to point the finger at behaviors rather than industries. That way, no child would go home and say, ‘Oh, daddy, you’re in a blah blah business.’ It would be horrible for some child to see their family member as a Captain Planet villain.”

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was created to entertain young viewers while educating them about environmental concepts, encouraging them to become active in planet protection. The concept for the show’s titular character, Captain Planet, originated from a challenge by eco-conscious magnate Ted Turner to Pyle.

Turner tasked Pyle, who was also a producer on the show, with creating a character that could bring global issues to life in an engaging way. When Pyle sought clarity on the character’s identity, Turner’s response was straightforward: “That’s your problem.”

Barbara Pyle

Rising to the challenge, Pyle and her team crafted a series resonating with children and adults. Pyle aimed to create a cross-generational show, targeting not just those born around 1985 but also their guardians, hoping the environmental messages would resonate with viewers of all ages.

“I wanted to make a show that was cross-generational,” Pyle said. “But I was hoping parents or grandparents watching alongside kids would pick up on the message too.”

The Planeteers, too, were inspired by real-life environmental activists from the 1980s and 1990s who embodied the spirit of ecological guardianship and activism.

The show debuted on September 15, 1990, and was produced by Turner Program Services and DIC Entertainment, an animation studio. DIC was known for its prolific output of children’s programming, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s, including classics such as “Inspector Gadget,” “The Real Ghostbusters,” and “Liberty Kids.”

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” quickly became one of the 1990s’ longest-running cartoon series, spanning six seasons and 113 episodes. Syndicated in more than 100 countries and used in various educational settings to teach children about environmental issues, the series sparked a wave of environmental activism worldwide. After its impactful run, the show concluded on May 11, 1996.

“Captain Planet, he’s our hero, gonna take pollution down to zero!” This theme song resonated with a generation, making “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” a defining piece of environmental pop culture. Beyond the small screen, the show’s message was spread through action figures, comic books, and video games emphasizing ecology.

The series’ influence persisted post-broadcast, notably with the 1991 founding of the Captain Planet Foundation . This organization empowers young environmentalists with the tools and resources to engage in environmental stewardship, continuing the show’s mission in real-world applications.

Decades later, the enduring appeal of “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” has also inspired numerous parodies and homages, reflecting its deep cultural impact. While often humorous, these parodies underscore the show’s iconic status and keep the conversation around it alive in popular culture.

In today’s context of environmental urgency, Captain Planet’s message is strikingly relevant. The collaborative spirit and proactive stance the show championed are crucial as we tackle present-day environmental challenges. Reflecting on the series, we see more than entertainment; we find a powerful call to action embodied in Captain Planet’s rallying cry: “The power is yours!”

Glen Powell Variety Actors on Actors

It’s been well over five years since news first broke that Glen Powell was writing a “ Captain Planet ” movie for Leonardo DiCaprio ‘s Appian Way Productions. Powell, who was coming off the success of his Netflix rom-com “Set It Up” at the time, described his take on the environmentalist superhero as “subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent.” Half a decade later, Powell is an even bigger star thanks to “Top Gun: Maverick” and still wants to play Captain Planet.

Popular on Variety

Getting the “Captain Planet” movie off the ground would give Powell a major superhero tentpole to lead. Rumors have persisted for months that Powell is being courted by Marvel (perhaps to play Cyclops in the rebooted “X-Men”), but he stressed to ET that he hasn’t “had a conversation with Marvel.”

“It takes a long time to navigate this town, so for anyone to be like, ‘Oh, he’d be great in this role,’ it’s humbling, it’s great,” Powell added.

Powell previously addressed Marvel rumors in an interview with Variety , saying, “Before Comic-Con, everybody was like, ‘Dude, are you Cyclops?’ No, I’m not. Nobody has called me. I don’t even have one contact info for Marvel, so I have no idea what people are talking about.”

The actor has been a fixture of this year’s awards season thanks to “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is now streaming on Paramount+. The action drama is expected to nab several Oscar nominations, including best picture.

Glen Powell may have superpowers after all: He’s hoping to resurrect scrapped superhero movie “Captain Planet,” with Leonardo DiCaprio set to produce.

The “Top Gun: Maverick” actor said that the long-rumored “Captain Planet” movie may have new life thanks to DiCaprio still being “super passionate” about the project. The adaptation of the 1990s cartoon was first announced in 2016, with Powell set to pen the script alongside Jono Matt (“Weird Waters”). Oscar-winner DiCaprio was producing with Jennifer Davisson Killoran (“Shining Girls,” “Richard Jewell”).

While Powell noted that the fate of “Captain Planet” ultimately lies in the hands of Warner Bros. Discovery and “where all the superhero stuff kind of lands there,” he added, “I think those conversations will be happening shortly” about officially greenlighting the film.

“I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it. I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great,” Powell told Entertainment Tonight . “I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero.”

“Captain Planet” is based on an environmental superhero who fights pollution. The original plot for the film would take place years after the animated series was set, with Captain Planet confronting his legacy.

The animated series ran from 1990 to 1992 and centered on five teenagers from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements. Together, the group can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils. A sequel series ran from 1993 to 1996.

While “Captain Planet” is possibly put back into orbit, Powell also told ET that he is in talks with “Set It Up” co-star Zoey Deutch for an upcoming project.

“One project we were trying to figure out didn’t really kind of come to fruition,” Powell said, “but Zoey and I are very committed to getting back on screen together.”

He is also co-writing “Hitman” alongside “one of my heroes” Richard Linklater, with whom he collaborated for 2016 film “Everybody Wants Some!.”

“Rick and I just finished writing that script together that I’m really, really excited about,” Powell told IndieWire . “That’s going to be his next movie. We’re kind of putting the finishing touches on some stuff, but we should be shooting that this fall. It’s awesome. You’re really, really going to love it. It’s something that we kind of cooked up over the pandemic and then here we are. It’s just something that like, is everything you love about Richard Linklater, and yet also something he’s never done. So I’m really, pumped about it.”

What Happens To Captain Planet When He Gets Sucked Into The Rings? Reddit Has Ideas

Wheeler with ring

"Captain Planet and the Planeteers" wasn't subtle with its message of environmentalism. However, there are still plenty of things only adults would notice about the cartoon , such as its episodes addressing substance use and the AIDS crisis. A far more innocuous thing you may have only wondered about the series upon becoming an adult is what exactly happens to Captain Planet (David Coburn) when he's not out saving the world.

Of course, Captain Planet, one of the best animated heroes from the '90s , can only be summoned using five special rings, which were given to five children around the globe by the earth spirit, Gaia (Whoopi Goldberg/Margot Kidder). When they come together, Captain Planet arises to save the day, but then he has to go somewhere when he's not summoned. Does he go to another dimension, or is he just kind of chilling in one (or more) of the rings? Reddit had a field day speculating about what the hero gets up to, with some decent theories rising to the surface.

Redditor u/atticuslodius turned to the theme song to find an answer, specifically the lyric, "He's our powers magnified." Taking that into consideration, they posited, "Captain Planet is conceived through these five constituent parts then once withdrawn he would restore back into the initial structure in which he was first constructed. Therefore, upon dissipation Captain Planet once more become a distribution of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart." It's a decent theory that Captain Planet would simply be an amalgamation of what makes up Earth, but it's far from the only one.

Some other Captain Planet theories get pretty ridiculous

Another Redditor also tried to consider something reasonable for the state of Captain Planet's existence when he's not actively defending the planet from the Eco-Villains. They theorized, "To be as pragmatic as possible I bet its a superposition like when the Crew of the Enterprise is beamed down to a planet's surface. Are you a person or a sum of your parts, if those parts aren't assembled are you still that person?" It's downright philosophical to an extent, as Captain Planet may not simply exist unless he's been forged through the five rings.

At the end of the day, it's a fairly silly question that ultimately wouldn't matter to young kids watching the show. Quite a few responses are just jokes, like this one from u/Darrenwho137 : "He assumes his secret identity of former vice president Al Gore." Naturally, some people couldn't help but reference Funny Or Die's excellent Captain Planet sketch starring Don Cheadle , like one Reddit user  saying that when the environmental hero isn't out and about, he's in "Don Cheadle's basement."

To be fair, it's difficult to ascertain any information on Captain Planet's whereabouts when he's not summoned from the show itself. It likely wasn't a major source of contention for the creators, as the Season 1 episode, "The Conqueror," really throws a wrench into many theories. The plot sees Zarm (Sting) imprison Captain Planet even though he wasn't summoned via the rings. Does this mean Captain Planet is in some physical space even without the rings? The true answer to all of this is that we've all thought way too hard about it and that it's a children's cartoon.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers is an American animated environmentalist television program, based on an idea by Ted Turner and Robert Larkin III. It ran episodes from September 10, 1990 until December 5, 1992. A sequel series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet , ran for three seasons.

The show focuses on five teenagers who are all given magic rings by Gaia , the Spirit of Earth. Kwame from Africa, Wheeler from North America, Linka from Soviet Union (changed to Eastern Europe after the Soviet Union's collapse), Gi from Asia and Ma-Ti from South America. When the powers of the five rings are combined (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart), an environmental superhero, Captain Planet , is summoned.

Celebrate Earth Day with a disturbing, prophetic episode of  Captain Planet

"Two Futures" has a darkest timeline that looks too familiar.

captain planet tour

"Step into the 21st century," she warns, "and see what the world will be like." She is Gaia, ethereal spirit of the Earth, one of those kindly parent-gods common to children's television who is both all-powerful and ever-threatened. Also: the only character in history ever voiced by Whoopi Goldberg and Margot Kidder . This episode of Captain Planet and the Planeteers first aired almost 30 years ago — late May, 1991 — so Gaia still sounds like Goldberg, herself a godly figure for any child watching back then. Her Star Trek: The Next Generation compatriot LeVar Burton was on the show too, as a main character and opening narrator — so Captain Planet had an immediately trustworthy quality, even if you were too young to connect the voice in the credits sequence to your awesome friend-host from Reading Rainbow .

Gaia's speaking to Wheeler (Joey Dedio), the brash New York teen with a fire ring to match his red hair. Wheeler has been a Planeteering for almost a year, and he's ready to stop saving the world. Gaia shows him what will happen if he gives up. Extreme weather becomes regular weather. The waters rise. The rainforests burn. You can't walk outside without protective equipment. It is a dark, terrible, unimaginable tomorrow: the 2020s.

I live in California, a sinking fireball on a good day. Last year we suffered one catastrophic blaze after another, and the sky was dark at noon. This bleak frontdrop had an even worse backdrop: global pandemic, the Amazon aflame. It was a fine cultural moment to ponder great works of apocalyptic art. I did not do that. Instead, all I could think about was "Two Futures," the two-part Captain Planet adventure from the cartoon's first season. I rewatched "Two Futures" this week, because you have to celebrate Earth Day somehow. The years have not been kind, to the show or to us.

Captain Planet was very goofy, not especially animated, and "multicultural" in a very Supercop America way that reads rather tone-deaf today. It's the rare nostalgia property un-rebooted in this century, possibly because Big Pollution won't allow a reboot, possibly because anyone working on a reboot is a human adult who can barely get through a single episode. The closing credits claim that the series was an "Original Idea by Ted Turner," and the whole operation has an undeniable Gotta please the boss! quality, hot plot nonsense propelled through a money cannon. The Planeteers are all very dependable, which is how old people often imagine young people. They join their rings together to create Captain Planet (David Coburn), who looks like what happens when the focus group insists your Superman type should be more country and more android-y and more naked. The bad guys are fun, at least, and the voices of the Polluting Perpetrators looks like Turner spinning his rolodex. In "Two Futures," the villains are Hoggish Greedly ( Ed Asner ), a pig-person with fuel lust, and Dr. Blight ( Meg Ryan ), who wears a coat so offensive I swear you see fox tails hanging off her shoulders. In fairness to Captain Planet , it was terribly right about too many things. Greedley yearns to travel back to the 1950s, "back before there were any pollution laws," when "no one worries about ecology!" Now we know Greedley could have just waited 10 years, or maybe gotten a cabinet position, or even just become president.

You can watch both parts of "Two Future" right now — for sale on Amazon, YouTube, Apple, etc. — though I recommend skipping to part 2. That propels you past a very long setup involving a time-traveling pool, the curious fact that Captain Planet is affected by radiation no humans worry about, and the embarrassing revelation that Wheeler is one of those people who loves New Year's parties. Wheeler winds up in a whole It's a Wonderful Life thing. He wants to stop being a Planeteer, to have never even been a Planeteer. Gaia sends him to a de-Wheelerized 2026 to show him the consequences of inaction. He arrives in a flooded Manhattan. "What happened to my home?" he screams. "What happened to the world?!?!"

Wheeler takes a tour of the general ruination. His fellow Planeteers are all hermits, or worse. Gi (Janice Kawaye) lives along a hurricane-wracked coastline. (The location is "Asia"; don't trust Captain Planet to get too specific.) Overfishing and pollution have driven marine life to oblivion and beyond. "It's too late for this world," she says. "It's all I can do to help a few dolphins." In Africa, Kwame (LeVar Burton!) hunkers down in "the only oasis in the region." Deforestation took away all the rainfall, and now he's tormented by land grabbers with energy rifles. The Soviet Union is still going strong, comrade, but Linka (Kath Soucie) is just a functionary handing out supplies to a struggling population. Ma-Ti (Scott Menville) lives in a sludge city that used to be his beloved rain forest. "I find life is easier if I can forget the past," he says, impotently using his Power of Heart ring to convince pedestrians to spare a little change.

Heavy stuff for the Saturday morning cartoon timeframe — or maybe I first caught "Two Futures" in after-school reruns? It left a mark on me the first time I saw it, and now I wonder if it will haunt my lifetime. Everything strident and on-message about the rest of Captain Planet runs brilliantly off the rails here. For the briefest of moments, a young viewer stares into the void, and sees what total existential defeat will someday look like in the mirror. I've never forgotten Future Linka's total horror when she sees Wheeler for the first time. "Where are your protective clothes and sunglasses?" she asks him. The atmosphere is poisonous, the sun blinding. You can't walk outside without safety gear. This was very scary 30 years ago, and sounds disappointingly normal today. The future Planeteers have used up all their idealism, and dismiss Wheeler's insistence that they have to keep working for a better world. "'Save the Earth'? You poor lunatic!" Linka declares, right before she tries to lock Wheeler in an asylum for pathological hopefulness.

Meanwhile, the Planeteer's Edenic headquarters on Hope Island now "looks like Las Vegas," overdeveloped by predatory sludgelords into metropolitan glitz. Anyone lucky enough to live there gets to spend their wasteful lives wallowing in luxury. The rest of the world burns and drowns and starves. "Two Futures" offers another possibility, a bright utopia where pollution is a distant memory. Hey, we're not in 2026 yet. It's too late for so much, but we can still help a few dolphins. You poor lunatic.

The Netherlands packs so much within its compact borders – from its grand cities to green spaces, picturesque waterways and miles of coastline – that it’s easy to take in numerous unique and memorable experiences throughout the country, even on a short trip.

Here are 10 of the very best things to do on your Dutch travels.

Canals of Amsterdam full of people celebrating King's day with many on boats

1. Captain an electric boat to explore Amsterdam’s canals

Renting a boat for a few hours lets you navigate Amsterdam ’s watery landscape at your own pace. In the city’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed canal ring and surrounding waterways (such as the Amstel river, which gave Amsterdam its name), you can glide past landmarks like the Westerkerk’s belltower, near the Anne Frank Huis, pretty bridges, photogenic canal houses containing charming shops, cozy restaurants and museums, and regenerating docklands. Pick a fine day, pack a picnic from Amsterdam’s street markets and set sail.

Planning tip: Electric boats are free from emissions and noise, and don’t need a boat license or experience (instruction is given at pick up). Book with companies such as Boaty or Eco Boats Amsterdam .

Save these tips on the best free things to do in Amsterdam to take your euros further.

2. View Van Gogh masterpieces in the Hoge Veluwe National Park

A wonderland of pine forests, heath, grassland and sand drifts, roamed by red and roe deer, mouflon and wild boar, the 135-acre (55 sq km) Hoge Veluwe National Park is laced with hiking and biking trails. Amid the trees at the park’s heart, the astonishing Kröller-Müller Museum holds the greatest collection of Van Gogh’s works outside Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, including masterpieces like The Potato Eaters,  and more by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, Picasso and Mondriaan, among others. Outside, some 160 sculptures by such luminaries as Rodin, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth grace its gardens.

Near the lake at the park’s northern edge, the splendid 1920-completed residence of the founders, Helene Kröller-Müller and her husband Anton, Jachthuis Sint Hubertus , also welcomes visitors.

Planning tip: You’ll need to buy national park tickets in advance or at park entrances. Time-slot tickets for the Kröller-Müller Museum and guided tours of Jachthuis Sint Hubertus must be pre-booked online.

A young woman walks across the mudflats of the Waddensea at low tide, The Netherlands

3. Mudwalk on the Wadden Sea

Slogging through gluggy mud might not immediately appeal but wadlopen (“mudwalking”) across vast mudflats, with crabs, clams and cockles underfoot and gulls cawing overhead, is an unforgettable, often mesmerizing, at-one-with-nature experience. At low tide, the Wadden Sea, the world’s largest unbroken intertidal zone, retreats to reveal the seafloor; it’s possible to reach the Frisian islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog (shorter, easier treks are available).

Planning tip: On the mainland, north of Groningen, Pieterburen is a prime wadlopen base. It’s vital to go with a trained guide and wear clothing appropriate for the season (many places rent footwear so you don’t damage your own).

4. Visit fairytale medieval castle Muiderslot

Looking like it’s been lifted from the pages of a storybook, with its turreted round towers and surrounding moat, Muiderslot was the 13th-century creation of Count Floris V. Its fortifications were added in the 17th century, ensconcing its flourishing gardens, with a beech alley, kitchen and herb gardens and plum orchard commissioned by its then owner, the historian, poet and playwright PC Hooft, who hosted leading writers, artists and scientists here. Following its renovation by architect Pierre Cuypers (of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum and Centraal Station fame), it’s been a national museum since 1878. Themed audio tours bring the castle’s centuries of history to life. Beyond the ramparts, boats fill the pretty pleasure port of Muiden, lined with waterside cafes.

Planning tip: From April to October, a fun way to travel here is by ferry from Amsterdam’s reclaimed island neighborhood of IJburg. During the same months, ferries also run to the late 19th-century UNESCO-listed fortress island of Pampus .

5. Taste Trappist beer and tour the abbey where it’s made near Tilburg

Trappist brewing secrets are normally closely guarded but   a visit to La Trappe gives you a rare chance to go behind the scenes. In a beautiful and serene pastoral setting on the outskirts of Tilburg in the Netherlands’ southeast, monks have been brewing since 1884 at Koningshoeven Abbey. On a guided tour, you’ll see the brewing process and abbey buildings, and taste its divine ales.

Keukenhof or Kitchen garden, also known as the Garden of Europe, is one of the world's largest flower gardens. Famous for its tulips

6. Cycle through tulip fields in the Bollenstreek

All your senses come alive as you pedal past fields of vibrantly colored flowers in the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) along the 21-mile (35km) Bloemenroute. Cycling this fragrant "Flower Route" takes around two to three hours. In spring you’ll see the Netherlands’ famous tulips and other flowers like jonquils and daffodils, while dahlias and sunflowers are among the floral spectacle in summer.

Bollenstreek highlights include Lisse’s intriguing Museum De Zwarte Tulp (Museum of the Black Tulip) and magnificent Keukenhof Gardens , and nearby flower farm De Tulperij in Voorhout.

Planning tip: Leiden makes an ideal base for forays through the tulips, with plenty of places to rent wheels in the city (and region-wide). Downloadable route maps highlight which flowers are in bloom in season.

Lonely Planet's Brian Healy shares his top tulip-viewing tips from a recent trip.

7. Step inside a museum storage facility in Rotterdam

Rotterdam ’s foremost art institution the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen might be closed for renovations until 2029 but it’s still possible to see its exceptional collections. The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen , in a giant bowl-shaped building covered by 1,664 reflective glass panels, is the storage facility of the entire, 154,000-piece collection. And, in a world first, the public can view its cache of paintings, sculptures and photography in climate-controlled compartments. The building’s tree-topped roof terrace has panoramic views over the striking contemporary skyline of Netherlands’ second-largest city.

Detour: Other venues to see art in the city include the Kunsthal, with changing exhibitions, and TENT and Kunstinstituut Melly, showcasing contemporary works. Serious art lovers should also check out the royal collection at Den Haag’s Mauritshuis, an easy 15 miles north of Rotterdam.

Mother and children ride bicyles past windmills at Kinderdijk.

8. Wander past windmills at Kinderdijk

Windmills are a classic fixture of the Dutch landscape, with some 1200 traditional spinners dotted across the countryside. At UNESCO World Heritage site Kinderdijk , 15 miles southeast of Rotterdam, 19 historic brick and timber mills still in operating condition rise above the peaceful waterways and polders (areas of drained land). You can meander (on foot or by bicycle) along the canals’ towpaths, visit museums and take a boat ride beneath the mills’ creaking sails.

Detour: Around 20 miles north of Amsterdam, windmill-filled Zaanse Schans is a working, inhabited village with quaint shops, traditional crafts and millers on hand to explain how windmills work.

Who needs to road trip when you can cycle? Here and the top 11 cycling routes in the Netherlands.

9. Delve into underground caves and passages in Maastricht

To understand the multilayered backstory of spirited southeastern city Maastricht , start by surveying the landscape from lofty Fort Sint Pieter. This hulking 1701-built defensive fortress sits within a deep-cut dry moat. Stroll the surrounding paths, then take a subterranean tour of the city’s honeycomb of caves and passages with Maastricht Underground to uncover the city’s Roman, Napoleonic and WWII history.

Netherlands, Edam town, female , young lady on bicycle riding near shops. on right of image a cheese shop display.

10. Eat cheese in Edam

Edam is synonymous with its round, red-rind, mild cows-milk cheese and the town has plenty of opportunities to indulge at restaurants, aromatic shops (Henri Willig occupies a 16th-century building) and, most atmospherically, its cheese market – held on Wednesday mornings in summer – when costumed locals enthusiastically recreate the trading of a bygone era and you can buy cheeses produced on local farms.

Cheese aside, Edam is a charming place to stroll the narrow streets lined with historic recalling its prosperous ship-building heritage and cruise its picturesque waterways.

Planning tip: Edam makes an easy and enjoyable 14-mile (22km) bike ride north of Amsterdam.
