Travel tips How to access WiFi in the UK

Travelling to the UK and wondering what the options are for connecting to the internet? Do you want to use your smartphone but avoid a huge bill when you get home? In this article, we have researched all the options so you don’t have to – read on to find out!

We have all become more and more dependent on our smartphones for just about every aspect of life. Whether it’s writing emails, using apps (we recommend downloading these 16 apps for UK travel) or getting driving directions, smartphones give us instant information at our fingertips.

So what happens when you travel to the UK?

Will your smartphone even work there?

The answer is yes, it can absolutely do all the things you need it to do, but you have to do a little research and make a plan prior to leaving.

Failure to do so could result in a nonworking smartphone on your trip, or even worse, a future bill with astronomical international roaming charges. Never fear, however, because the research has been done for you.

SIM options – quick guide

1. the first step is to understand each of the 5 available options, 2. the second step is understanding which is the best option for your needs., why you need a vpn, 2. a portable wi-fi device, 3. check with your telecommunications provider, option 1 – purchase at home before you travel, option 2 – purchase after you arrive in the uk, 5. use esim technology, choosing the right wi-fi option for you – the best sim card for uk travel.

🏆 What do I use? I use an Airalo eSIM these days and have used them in the UK (and, in fact, all over the world) – so my NUMBER 1 choice is an Airalo eSIM

A quick overview of the options available in the United Kingdom

Most hotels in the UK have free Wi-Fi. You could also plan on using hotspots, those public locations offering free Wi-Fi, like museums , coffee shops or fast food restaurants.

2. A portable Wi-Fi device such as Skyroam Solis

You can either rent or buy one of these. They are portable, about the size of a drink coaster and very easy to use.

3. Use your mobile provider’s international plan or arrange for day passes

Call your provider to see what their options are. Some have international calling built right in, while others offer international day passes. For the day passes, be sure to make a note of the price, the limits on data and the ability to make calls and texts.

4. Buy a SIM card either before you leave or when you get to the UK

For those folks not so technically minded, a SIM card is the small card inside of your phone that stores data unique to the user and to the phone. When travelling to the UK from abroad, assume you’ll need to swap out your existing SIM card for a UK compatible SIM card.

Many new phones come eSIM enabled which means you don’t need the usual SIM card with a chip embedded in it as a reprogrammable chip is actually present within the smartphone itself. This option is only available if you have a compatible phone so you will need to check first.

Ask yourself these questions

  • How much data will you need?
  • How often and for what reason will you be using your smartphone?
  • Will you be using apps that require a lot of data?
  • Will you need to watch videos or download information for work?
  • Will you need service for multiple devices?

Perhaps you’ll only need your smartphone to occasionally check email or make a quick social media post. Maybe you’re travelling with family and plan to use smartphones to keep in touch with one another via texts and calls.

Luckily, there are options that work for all of these scenarios.

5 options to access WiFi in the UK

Let’s look at all those options in a little more detail

1. Free Wi-Fi

If your hotel offers free Wi-Fi, you could plan to use that exclusively during your trip.

This would work well for someone who doesn’t use their phone very often and is willing to take care of any smartphone needs while in their room.

Outside of the hotel, there are many free hotspots for wifi in UK attractions or public places that could also be used.

Well, it’s free. Also, connecting to it is simple and convenient.

Disadvantages

Free Wi-Fi can be slow. This may not be an issue if you’ll be using your phone infrequently, but if you plan to visit websites, use apps or download information, slow speeds could be frustrating.

Are your game-playing kids travelling with you? They may not be very pleased with this option.

While slow speed is something to consider, lax security can be a serious problem. Using free Wi-Fi in public spaces is risky. Encryption standards may not be adequate, so anyone sitting near you could gain access to your personal information.

So could hackers who know public Wi-Fi can lead them directly into your phone. Talk about a fast way to ruin your trip! This is why we use (and recommend) a VPN service like SurfShark.

A VPN or Virtual Private Network allows you to create secure connections over the internet. This is essential if you are planning to use free WiFi on your travels as it stops anyone from gaining access to your private information.

If you do choose the free Wi-Fi route, the critical thing to remember is to turn off your international roaming. Depending on your provider, failure to do so could result in staggering charges on your next bill.

Thus, the best thing to do is while in the UK is to put your smartphone into flight mode. This will ensure that you won’t receive or transmit cellular data. Don’t worry — you’ll still have access to Wi-Fi in flight mode. It’s also a great way to save battery power on your phone.

Staying in touch with family and friends will still work with apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp — all usable without roaming.

There are also apps that allow you to download information while you have Wi-Fi for later use. These include Google Drive, TripAdvisor and AccuWeather.

The Solis, for example, is a pocket-sized device available for rent or purchase that allows for portable wifi UK. It has 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi speeds and is easy to use via the Solis app on your smartphone.

You know exactly how much it’s going to cost upfront. You’ll either purchase a device and pay for the data you use or you can rent it and pay per day. Devices like these are also secure, unlike public Wi-Fi.

If you would like to connect your iPad and laptop, this would be a great option for you as it allows connection to multiple devices. You can also share it with others who are in close proximity to the person holding the device.

This option does not include phone calls. Also, it may not be the most cost-effective choice if you are travelling by yourself, don’t need much data and only need Wi-Fi on one device.

While this device does allow for multiple users, they all need to be in the same place, so if the family heads in separate directions, someone is going to lose their Wi-Fi.

Finally, you must remember to charge its battery.

Note – the Solis is only available to purchase in the USA at present. An alternative to consider is the TravelWiFi portable device which we recently used during our UK trip in 2022 .

Some plans include international roaming but if they don’t, they may offer an international day pass.

For residents of the United States, Verizon offers its TravelPass for $10.00, which allows up to 500MB per day and calls within the UK or back home.

T-Mobile’s international day pass works much the same way, but it’s only $5.00 and also has the ability to make your smartphone into a mobile hotspot.

Sprint is a little different. They offer Global Roaming, which allows 25 cents-a-minute calls, free texting and unlimited basic data up to 2G. You’ll need to go to their website, however, and make sure this service will work on your device.

Some Australian providers like Telstra and Optus offer a travel pack that allows for a fixed amount of talk, text, and data for a specific amount of days. This is generally cheaper than using pay-as-you-go roaming.

It’s very easy to call your provider or to use their apps to arrange these services. It’s also a good, secure and reliable method for someone who doesn’t plan on using large amounts of data.

With certain providers, there is a data limit per 24-hour period. If you go over, it can be very expensive. The limited data makes this a poor option for someone planning to use their smartphone for everything while travelling.

4. Purchase a UK Prepaid SIM Card

You can buy a prepaid SIM card online and have it shipped to you before your trip even begins.

Here are the three best options for a UK SIM card for visitors that are available for pre-purchase.

  • Orange Holiday Zen

This card comes with 8GB of data. You’ll get 30 minutes of calling and 200 minutes of SMS use.

Once you begin using your SIM card, it is good for 14 days. The Orange Holiday Zen might be the ideal choice for someone who won’t use their phone very often during their trip.

For more data, upgrade to the Orange Holiday Europe . You get 20GB of data, 120 minutes of calls worldwide and 1,000 SMS messages. This also lasts for a fortnight after activation.

  • 3 Data Pack 8GB

This card also offers 8GB. Unlike the Orange Holiday SIM range, it offers unlimited calls and SMS use within Europe. It works for 30 days after you begin using it.

This card can be used in 71 Go Roam countries worldwide, including some outside of Europe such as Australia and the US. It gives you a UK phone number, and works with any unlocked device. Receiving messages and calls is free with this SIM card.

For more data or a longer duration, you can also buy the 3 PAYG 12GB card that’s valid for a year, or the 24GB option that lasts for two years after activation. Both also work in 71 Go Roam countries.

This is our third choice as it’s more basic, but the price tag does match that. It covers all European countries and gives you 10GB of data.

Once activated, it’s good for 30 days of use, so longer than the Orange SIM cards.

The primary advantage is that you can begin using your smartphone as soon as your plane lands in the UK.

Swapping your SIM card ahead of time will give you peace of mind in knowing that all of your data, text and call needs have been taken care of. You will also be guaranteed fast, consistent data speeds throughout your trip.

Once the new SIM card is inside your smartphone, you won’t be able to use it until you get to the UK. If you have multiple phones, this may work for you. If not, it could be a problem.

You also won’t know if the new SIM card has been properly installed and is working until you get to the UK.

A person holding a selection of the best UK sim card for visitors

Some people may choose to wait until arriving in the country to buy a UK prepaid SIM card. If you don’t mind paying a little more, you can pick one up at the airport as soon as you get off the plane.

You can also find them more reasonably priced at a provider’s store. There are four main providers of UK SIM cards for tourists. Their stores can be found throughout the country.

As long as your phone can be unlocked, they will install it for you without requiring you to show identification or your passport, which had been a past requirement.

SIM cards are also available at convenience stores, grocery stores and tobacconists.

A phone with a sim card next to it one option when choosing the best UK sim card for visitors

Here are the four main providers who offer a UK prepaid SIM card for tourists.

EE is one of the largest internet service providers and mobile network operators in the UK. They offer several pay-as-you-go packages at different price points depending on the amount of data and call minutes you need.

They are the UK branch of Telefonica which is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. They offer 5 types of SIM cards for UK tourists, varying in available data and minutes.

Their name reflects that they were the first telecommunication company to offer a 3G connection to their customers.

They have six different UK tourist SIM cards, all offering unlimited minutes and texts. The only difference is in the amount of data and, of course, the price.

They also offer a variety of prepaid SIM cards, so again, which one you get would depend on how you plan to use your smartphone. They have a variety of SIM-only deals and pay-as-you-go SIM plans that are ideal for travellers.

There are many options for data or calling with these cards, so you could tailor your purchase to your exact needs. Getting your SIM changed when you arrive will allow for a consistent and fast data speed throughout your stay in the UK.

You may need to unlock your phone. In order to do that you would have to visit one of the providers’ stores. This could potentially cost you time and is probably not how you want to spend your precious vacation minutes.

Also, some smartphones will not unlock if you have had them for less than 12 months, so you would need to contact your provider before you travel to make sure this wouldn’t be an issue.

A picture of a phone and a sim card

If you’re not familiar with this yet, then you’re far from alone! An eSIM may already actually be there within your phone, though you’d be forgiven for not knowing it.

eSim is an entirely online system, so you don’t need the usual SIM card with a chip embedded in it. Set-up is fast, it’s simple to use and it’s all done online.

Many of the latest smartphones are already eSIM enabled. This especially applies to the top selling brands like Apple, Google and Samsung. For example, compatible devices include the Apple iPhone 11, the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S20, plus all subsequent models in each range.

With an eSIM, a reprogrammable chip is actually present within the smartphone itself. Before using an eSIM, all you normally need to do is scan a QR code to begin the download. It’s a quick and convenient way to get a SIM without a physical card.

You can find the right eSIM for your UK trip at airalo.com . Prices start at just $5, and the eSim lasts for anything from a week upwards.

An eSIM costs from just USD $5, so it’s a very affordable way to stay connected and in touch with your loved ones.

As it’s solely online, eSIMs are far more eco-friendly than traditional SIM cards. You don’t need to wait for a new SIM to be delivered either.

You can switch to any mobile network more or less instantly too. Sometimes, you can also use a SIM card in your phone at the same time. This means you can use each for different purposes – such as work and leisure.

eSIMS are still relatively new, and not offered by all phone networks. You usually need a contract, rather than a Pay As You Go plan, to use this technology via your usual phone network.

Not all smartphones are compatible with eSIM technology. If you have a phone that’s more than a couple of years old, or is made by certain brands, then you may not be able to use an eSIM.

So that’s basically all there is to mastering the art of picking which smartphone Wi-Fi option is right for you while travelling in the UK . Whew!

It’s really not such a complicated puzzle when all the information is laid out. You know how you will use your smartphone and how much data you will need, so just pick the option that works best for you. Then enjoy a surprise-free trip to the UK!

uk travel sim

If you plan on visiting the UK, having a SIM card is essential. Having internet access while traveling allows you to easily navigate new cities, discover the best restaurants, find directions to your accommodation, book taxis, and share photos with your family on the go.

While roaming is an option, the international fees can quickly accumulate. That’s why we recommend either an eSIM or a local SIM card to access local phone rates. Thankfully, obtaining an eSIM or local SIM card in the UK is incredibly straightforward, but it’s beneficial to know which option is most suitable for you.

This comprehensive guide provides all the information you need to purchase a SIM card in the UK, including current pricing and the absolute best SIM card to meet your needs.

How to Get a Sim Card in UK

Identify mobile providers: Three (3), Vodafone and O2 are your best options in UK.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in UK

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for UK at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in UK then you will be in luck. All major international airports in UK have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Three (3), Vodafone and O2. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in UK are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in UK with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to UK. The Airalo UK eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $15 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in UK without having to venture outside.

Our preferred eSim provider in UK is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to UK and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s UK eSim uses the O2 UK and Three UK networks to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the O2 UK and Three UK networksnetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in UK.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s UK eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $5 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $7.50 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $10 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $22.50 USD 20GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $36 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $15 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s UK eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s UK eSim uses the Vodafone UKnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in UK

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s UK eSim:

Unlimited data valid for 5 days – Price: $19 USD Unlimited data valid for 7 days – Price: $27 USD Unlimited data valid for 10 days – Price: $34 USD Unlimited data valid for 15 days – Price: $47 USD Unlimited data valid for 20 days – Price: $54 USD Unlimited data valid for 30 days – Price: $64 USD Unlimited data valid for 60 days – Price: $84 USD Unlimited data valid for 90 days – Price: $99 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that is permanently installed in a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional SIM cards, it does not need to be physically inserted or removed.

Instead, the eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards.

eSIM technology offers convenience, flexibility, and simplicity, especially for frequent travelers or those who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, making it much easier to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and access voice, data, and messaging services just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

One reason why using an eSIM can be beneficial is the convenience it offers. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs eliminate the need for physically inserting or removing a SIM card when switching between mobile networks or plans. This is especially useful for frequent travelers who may need to switch networks or use local SIM cards in different countries.

Another benefit of eSIMs is the dual SIM functionality they provide. With an eSIM, users can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This feature can be helpful for separating personal and work numbers or for managing multiple phone lines.

Additionally, eSIMs offer a space-saving advantage. Since they are embedded within the device, there is no need for a physical SIM card slot. This allows manufacturers to make devices smaller or utilize the extra space for other components.

The remote provisioning capability of eSIMs is also noteworthy. Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely over the air, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card or visiting a store. This offers greater flexibility and convenience in managing mobile connectivity.

Furthermore, eSIM technology ensures future-proofing. As more mobile networks and service providers begin to support eSIMs, using an eSIM-compatible device allows users to take advantage of new services and offerings as they become available.

Overall, eSIM technology provides convenience, flexibility, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it an appealing choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

A guide to finding the best prepaid eSIM data plans for visiting the United Kingdom

phones and technology

uk travel sim

Before visiting the United Kingdom you’ll want to ensure you have a high-speed mobile data plan for your phone. But don’t make the expensive mistake of using your home plan’s data package because you could get hit with a huge bill. Luckily, UK eSIM data plans are very affordable and easy to set up.

In this guide, I’ll cover how to find the best UK eSIM data plan that will give you consistent high-speed mobile data without spending a lot of money.

Why It’s Best To Not Use Your Home Plan’s International Data Plan in The UK

Your current mobile phone provider likely offers an international data plan option but this is typically expensive and the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, If you’re American, the AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day, Verizon TravelPass is also $10/day, and many T-Mobile plans offer free international roaming but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email. Some of these plans offer “unlimited” data but you only get 1-2GB/day of 4G data before you’re throttled down to 3G speeds. Canadian and Australian carriers probably offer similar packages.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying a UK eSIM data plan—for example, eSIM data plans from Orange or Holafly will cost you around $2-$3/day.

On a personal note, I use T-Mobile as my domestic carrier and I can attest that I’ve gotten very inconsistent data speeds when using their free international data roaming plan while visiting Europe. For example, I was in Barcelona in March 2024 and about 20% of the time service was slow but somewhat usable but the other 80% of the time I couldn’t even load a simple webpage or use Google Maps. After a few days, I switched to Holafly and had zero problems.

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans for the UK

uk travel sim

Brexit and Data Roaming: By EU law, data roaming fees within EU countries have been banned since so, for example, an Italian plan will work seamlessly in France, Germany, Spain, etc. But the United Kingdom is no longer covered by this rule since they left the EU in 2020. As of now, many data plans still operate as they did before Brexit but there is a possibility that some UK eSIM data plans might not work in the rest of Europe and vice versa. I’ll try to emphasize this for each plan I recommend below.

There are a handful of different mobile providers that offer eSIM data plans in the UK.

The first (and most complicated) option is to buy an eSIM data plan directly from one of the main UK mobile carriers ( Vodafone UK , BT/EE , O2 UK , and Three UK ). The problem for visitors is that many of these UK plans are intended for people who live in the United Kingdom so you’re forced to sign up for a long-term contract. This can be a good deal if you’re visiting the UK for multiple months but this isn’t the case for most travelers.

For tourists, the best option is buying a prepaid UK eSim data plan geared toward short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, etc.

For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan I list in this guide will vary slightly so spend time looking at the specific details of each plan. But here are the main things to consider:

  • Data Allowance: Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
  • Plan Length: eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.
  • Mobile Hot Spot Tethering: Most eSIM plans don’t allow you to use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
  • NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).

Geography Refresher: The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK.

HOLAFLY UK ESIM [Best Unlimited Data UK eSIM]

uk travel sim

Holafly  is a new data-only eSIM provider that I previously used while visiting Europe and had a great experience using (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to get a more in-depth look). Holafly sells both UK-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from a local UK mobile provider (Vodafone UK) so there’s a possibility you might get less priority on the Vodafone network during peak usage times than actual Vodafone customers.

Unlike other companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and their plans run from 5 to 90 days. However, Holafly/Vodafone may throttle your data if you use excessive data but it shouldn’t be an issue with most users.

  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  None
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Tethering:  No
  • Network: Vodafone UK
  • Service works everywhere in the EU and UK

Holafly eSIMs are data only so you don’t get any voice calls or texting with these plans. Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

But I do like how Holafly offers multiple plan options to fit various trip lengths so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Bouygues My European eSIM [Best Full-Featured UK eSIM]

uk travel sim

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

Additionally, the Bouygues My European eSIM plan comes with a local European phone number that can call any other European phone number for free.

  • Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
  • Data Tethering: Allowed
  • Service Speed: 4G/LTE
  • Calls: Unlimited within Europe
  • Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe
  • Credit validity: 30 day
  • Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
  • Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM [Upgraded, Full-Featured UK eSIM]

uk travel sim

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use.

Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM [Full-Featured UK eSIM]

uk travel sim

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  20GB (they sometimes give you 30GB of data)
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used in the UK

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other mobile plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that will work anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You’ll get 20GB of data with this plan but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. But even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

I’ve personally used the Orange Holiday Europe plan while traveling through Europe and it worked flawlessly. Read my Orange Holiday Europe review to hear more.

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM [Best Budget-Friendly UK eSIM]

uk travel sim

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB (they sometimes give you 15GB of data)
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for a week or two but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE IN THE UK

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  and tips for buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe . Below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in the UK and throughout Europe.

BRING A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

Be Aware of Theft While Using Your Phone

Pickpockets love stealing smartphones so pay attention while you’re using your phone, stash it away safely while on public transportation/crowds, and don’t set it down while you’re in public. Read my guide to Pickpockets in Europe for more anti-theft advice.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

It’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s why it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

Save Heavy Phone Usage For WiFi

Wait until you’re somewhere with a WiFi connection before you do any heavy streaming or download files.

uk travel sim

Are you planning a trip to the UK and looking for the best tourist e-sim card to stay connected? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know about using an e-sim cards when traveling to the UK including a comparison of the best the UK e-sim cards for 2024.

Don’t waste money on high roaming charges, read my recommendations below and order an e-sim card for the UK on the internet and get connected in just a couple minutes. Below you will find up to date prices as per April 2024 and all specifications per e-sim card.

This guide will show you where and when to order an e-sim card for the UK, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards for the UK and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for traveling to the UK online.

Ever since 2012 I am traveling the world non-stop and eventually turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly get to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2022 I visited 62 different countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used throughout the last two years.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. Providing essential travel tips is what made me start writing sim card guides from every country I visit and now on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world:  USA , Canada , Dubai , Egypt , Asia , China , Thailand , Malaysia ,  Indonesia , Europe , Italy , France , Spain , Vietnam , Philippines ,  Singapore , Australia , New Zealand ,  international e-sim cards and many more.

Of course Traveltomtom also wrote a complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for the United Kingdom as well as specific guides for buying a sim card at London Heathrow Airport , Manchester Airport , London Gatwick , Luton and Stansted airport in the UK.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid sim card and e-sim card advice for your holiday destination.

In this the UK e-sim card guide I will show you a comparison of all the e-sim card plans for tourists with up to date prices as per April 2024.

After I will explain how e-sim cards work, more about the network coverage and 4G/5G data speed, some FAQ about e-sim cards, the difference between e-sim cards and local prepaid sim cards in the UK and everything else you need to know about using e-sim cards when traveling to the UK.

But let me start with giving you my e-sim card recommendation for the UK. These are my favorite e-sim cards for traveling to the UK in 2024.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends the following two e-sim cards for traveling to the UK in 2024:

orange 5g ready esim card for uk 2024

1. Orange Holiday Europe eSIM for $59.90 USD

  • Valid in all of Europe
  • Unlimited calling/texting in Europe
  • Valid for 28 days
  • $1.2 USD per Gigabyte

2. Nomad e-sim card for the UK for $21 USD

  • 20 GB data-only e-sim
  • Valid only in the UK
  • NO incoming/outgoing calls
  • Valid for 30 days
  • $1.05 USD per Gigabyte

The best value tourist e-sim card for the United Kingdom is the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM that you can order via SimOptions. This UK e-sim card is a little more expensive than options 2 but it gives you 50 GB data and is 5G ready. The best thing about this Orange e-sim card for the UK is that it is valid in 39 countries and comes with unlimited calling and texting in Europe at a rate of $1.2 USD per Gigabyte.

You can order this e-sim card for traveling to the UK exclusively on SimOptions .

Because the Orange Holiday Europe e-sim card is valid in all of Europe it is also rated as one of the best sim cards for traveling to Europe in 2024 .

A very good second best is an e-sim offered by Nomad . This e-sim is even a couple bucks cheaper, but is a data-only e-sim card. The e-sim operator is eSIM Go and they operate on the EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 network in the UK. It is a data-only sim card so you can not make or receive phone calls with this e-sim card, sms services are also not available. This UK e-sim from Nomad is 5G ready and comes at a rate of only $1.05 USD per Gigabyte.

Is the UK one of your stops on a trip around the world then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for traveling internationally . Just like the Orange Holiday Europe international e-sim there are e-sim cards that cover up to 141 countries.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for the UK or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to the UK.

However, in this case you can still order a sim card for traveling to the UK on the internet before your trip. But it will be a physical prepaid sim card instead of an e-sim card.

Check out Traveltomtom’s complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for the UK in 2024  or find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for the UK

Buying an e-sim card on arrival in the UK is still not possible for tourists. As per April 2024 Vodafone, EE, O2 and Three still provide physical prepaid sim cards for tourists only. In stores, as well as on airports in the UK, there are NO e-sim cards available for tourists.

But luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell e-sim cards for the UK and they actually have amazing offers, even better than buying a sim card in the UK on arrival, so keep reading…

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in the UK from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

These are the 3 big e-sim card providers and they sell great e-sim card plans for the UK. They are tested and reviewed multiple times by Traveltomtom:

  • Nomad

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country around the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions is the only e-sim provider that also offers international prepaid sim cards for the UK . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to the UK and it is plug and play when you arrive in the UK.

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for the UK.

Airalo is a very reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your e-sim card for the UK through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Airalo is normally one of my top recommendations but the Airalo e-sim card plans for the UK are slightly more expensive compared to SimOptions and Nomad. However, sometimes they have on going offers so it is worth checking them out anyway.

airalo esim card plans for united kingdom 2024

Here are the UK e-sim card plans from Airalo for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $5 USD
  • 2 GB data for 15 days = $7.5 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $10 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $15 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $22.5 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $36 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for the UK from Airalo .

The Airalo e-sim cards for the UK are from Uki Mobile and operate on the 4G/LTE network of O2 and Three. Unfortunately the Airalo Uki Mobile e-sim cards for the UK are not 5G ready.

In pretty much all the amazing places to visit in the UK you will find a 4G/LTE signal tho and the data speed is pretty generally good. However, there is 5G in a lot of popular tourist attractions in the UK already.

For more info about the best 4G/5G network in the UK check my complete guide for the best prepaid sim card for tourists in the UK in 2024 , including network coverage maps of all the mobile internet providers.

All the Airalo e-sim cards are data-only sim cards without a phone number, so any phone/sms service is NOT supported. An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check out the Airalo website .

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering an e-sim card.

Why using SimOptions? When it comes to UK e-sim cards SimOptions has better e-sim card plans than Airalo and is therefore also recommended as the best e-sim cards for tourists traveling to the UK.

SimOptions has a lot of UK e-sim cards and most of them are actually international e-sim cards that are valid in all of Europe and beyond and on top of that most of these e-sim cards come with unlimited calling and texting.

Let me first show you the UK e-sim cards from SimOptions, which in fact are not so interesting.

simoptions esim card plans for uk 2024

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $9.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $17.90 USD

But the best e-sim cards for the UK from SimOptions are the international e-sim cards.

simoptions international esim cards for uk 2024

Here are all the international e-sim cards from SimOptions for 2024. These international e-sim cards are valid in up to 39 countries, including the UK:

  • 15 GB data + unlimited callsfor 15 days = $21.90 USD
  • 10 GB data (5G ready) + $2 calling credit for 30 days = $24.90 USD
  • 12 GB data + 30 minutes international + unlimited calls/text for 14 days = $29.90 USD
  • 20 GB data-only in 6 countries = $34.90 USD
  • 30 GB data + unlimited calls/text for 30 days = $44.90 USD
  • 30 GB data + 120 minutes international + unlimited calls/text for 14 days = $49.90 USD
  • 50 GB data (5G ready) + unlimited calls/text for 28 days = $59.90 USD

Click here for more info or to order a SimOptions e-sim card for the UK .

The e-sim cards from SimOptions are from various but well-known and reputed mobile internet operators in Europe: O2, Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Three.

Unfortunately SimOptions doesn’t specify which mobile network operator in the UK they use and most of these international e-sim cards only offer 4G/LTE max data speed.

However, one of the reasons Traveltomtom rated the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM as the best e-sim card for traveling to the United Kingdom is that this e-sim is also 5G ready.

All the international e-sim cards that you order via SimOptions come with a phone number and they allow incoming and outgoing calls and sms. Most of these e-sim cards even have unlimited calling and texting in all of Europe.

The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in the UK. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Last but not least there is Nomad and they often have amazing e-sim card deals for tourists. I wasn’t disappointed when I checked out the UK e-sim deals.

Traveltomtom has used Nomad now in more than 10 different countries and had great experiences.

nomad esim card plans for uk 2024

Here are the regular Nomad e-sim card plans for the UK in 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $7 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $8 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $11 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $15 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $21 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for the UK from Nomad .

The Nomad e-sim cards for the UK are from eSIM Go and they use the 4G/5G mobile data network of all mobile internet providers in the UK: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. The Nomad e-sim cards for the UK are 5G ready. All Nomad e-sim cards are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported

Below you can find the Nomad e-sim card specifications for the standard e-sim plans.

nomad uk esim specifications

The Nomad the UK e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 30 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in the UK. Basically when the plane lands. For more info check the Nomad website .

Nomad e-sim cards for the UK with unlimited data

Nomad also offers e-sim cards for the United Kingdom with unlimited data, but Traveltomtom is NOT a fan and does not recommend e-sim cards with unlimited data. More about it later.

nomad esim card plans unlimited data for uk 2024

Check out the following unlimited data e-sim cards for the UK from Nomad:

  • Unlimited data in the UK for 1 day = $7 USD
  • Unlimited data in the UK for 3 days = $15 USD
  • Unlimited data in the UK for 5 days = $22 USD
  • Unlimited data in the UK for 7 days = $30 USD
  • Unlimited data in the UK for 10 days = $41 USD

These unlimited data e-sim cards operate on the 4G/5G network of Three and O2.

The reason Traveltomtom is not a fan of these unlimited plans is that they have a so-called FUP (Fair Use Policy) of only 2 GB per day. Which means after you used 2 GB in 1 day, the data speed will be reduced for 24 hours to 512 Kbps. That is ridiculously slow, barely enough for email and WhatsApp. You won’t be able to use social media apps any more for the next 24 hours.

For Traveltomtom a hard no-go, but it is up to you. More about the exact specifications for the Nomad e-sim cards with unlimited data later on in this article.

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I mentioned before that I travel the world full time and I am on the road constantly. Pretty much every week I need another sim card to stay connected.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for the UK?

cheapest esim card for uk 2024

The cheapest e-sim card for the UK is an Airalo e-sim card for just $5 USD , it will give you 1 GB data for 7 days. This e-sim is only valid in the UK and does not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in the UK

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to the UK in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to the UK without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in the UK with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to the UK, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to the UK so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

Overseas dat roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you at pretty  much every amazing tourist destinations in the UK there is at least a 4G/LTE signal if not even already 5G available.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to the UK. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for the UK?

You can only buy an e-sim card for the UK on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for the UK. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to the UK in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for the UK through one of the above recommended e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation.

On arrival in the UK

There are 4 main mobile internet provider in the UK: Vodafone, EE, Three and O2. As per April 2024 none of these operators offer e-sim cards for tourists, only physical prepaid sim cards.

For more info about buying a prepaid sim card for tourists in the UK in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in the UK, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network.

Flying into the UK and landing in either London, Liverpool, Manchester or any other international airport then you can buy a tourist sim card for the UK on arrival at the airport, but only physical prepaid sim cards for tourists are provided, there are no e-sim cards for tourists available.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for the UK?

You can order an e-sim card for the UK pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to the UK or before. When in the UK you will need an internet connection to instal your e-sim card. Pretty much every international airport in the UK has free WiFi so you could use that to install your e-sim card. Just make sure it is a stable internet connection and therefore Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your e-sim card in your home country.

So my personal advice is to instal your e-sim card for the UK before you get into the plane and as soon as the plane lands you will already be connected without any problems.

How do I know all this? Traveltomtom visits the UK multiple times per year.

As mentioned before at London Heathrow Airport you can only buy physical prepaid sim cards, no e-sims. Click on the link for more info about my experiences buying a prepaid sim card at London Heathrow International Airport or check out my vlog on YouTube .

For more detailed info about the best prepaid sim cards for the UK , check out my complete guide in the link or click here for my YouTube video .

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for the UK you instantly receive a summary of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your the UK e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR code contains all the information about your the UK e-sim card.

Once you scan the QR code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for the UK

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for the UK e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to the UK. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to the UK or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to the UK and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for the UK recommended above ( SimOptions ,  Nomad  and  Airalo ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in the UK.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider as well. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell the UK e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to the UK.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a UK e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to the UK. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new the UK e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a UK tourist e-sim card?

Yes, you can but it depends which e-sim card you order. All the Airalo and  Nomad e-sim cards for the UK are data-only. Data-only means that incoming and outgoing calls are NOT supported and the e-sim card does not come with a phone number.

However, all the international e-sim cards from  SimOptions come with a phone number. That means incoming calls and sms are supported. Most of these e-sim cards also come with unlimited calling and texting in all of Europe.

So if you like the option of receiving and making phone calls then definitely order your e-sim card for the United Kingdom through SimOptions.

In the above the UK e-sim card comparison you can find all the specifications per e-sim card.

Can I use 5G on a UK e-sim card?

Yes, some of the UK e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet are 5G ready, but definitely not all of them. One of the reasons why Traveltomtom rated the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM with 50 GB data as the best tourist e-sim for the UK is that this e-sim card is 5G ready.

Also some of the e-sim cards from Nomad are 5G ready, all others only support 4G/LTE.

Are there e-sim cards for the UK with unlimited data?

Yes, there are UK e-sim cards with unlimited data and as indicated above Nomad also offers unlimited data e-sim cards for the UK.

Even if you would come across some e-sim cards on the internet that sell the UK e-sim cards with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed, mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes.

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that also sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but does NOT specify what is the exact Fair Use Policy. Very tricky and therefore not recommended.

nomad uk esim specifications unlimited data

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for the UK with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. I have used one of these e-sim cards with unlimited data before and I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. Then I literally had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal. Nomad also offers these kind of e-sim cards for the UK with 'unlimited' data.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media was not loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for the UK with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card for the UK.

For $59.90 USD you get a UK sim card with 50 GB data via SimOptions . These e-sims offer a lot of data and there is no real need for an e-sim card with unlimited data unless you want to upload your whole camera roll to a Google Drive or iCloud via 4G instead of WiFi.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to the UK in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to the UK?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to the UK, but what is the best way? This of course depends on your own needs.

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to the UK:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards.

  • E-sim cards

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

In general if you use a lot of data local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected and this is also the case in the UK. Local prepaid sim cards with big data bundles are cheaper than the UK e-sim cards that you order on the internet.

The difference is just a couple dollars though and local prepaid sim cards for tourists can only be purchased on arrival in the UK in a phone store or at the airport and NOT on the internet.

More info about the best the UK sim cards for tourists can be found in my complete guide for buying a tourist sim card in the UK in 2024 .

international prepaid sim cards for traveling to uk 2024

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to the UK. Some of them are great for the UK as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

E-sim cards

As explained throughout the article there are two different e-sim cards:

  • E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards that you buy in the UK in a mobile internet provider store

However, as of April 2024 e-sim cards are still not available for prepaid tourist sim cards in the UK.

Traveltomtom personally shopped around in the UK to find out if e-sim cards were available for tourists and the answer is: NO!

On arrival at the international airports in the UK they only sell physical prepaid sim cards for tourists and in every phone store of EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three they told me e-sim cards where not available for tourists.

Read all about it in my detailed guide for buying a sim card at London Heathrow Airport or if you are interested in watching a vlog about my arrival and buying a sim card at London Heathrow Airport then check out my YouTube video.

There is also a video about buying a prepaid sim card in the UK on my YouTube Channel.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to the UK, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to the UK. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in the UK. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

Price difference

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare the best the UK e-sim card for tourists with local prepaid sim cards for the UK, Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are slightly cheaper than the e-sim cards.

When buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival in the UK the best prepaid sim card deal is a Three UK physical prepaid sim card for £15 GBP, which is around $18 USD that give you 25 GB data for 30 days. That means only $0.75 USD per Gigabyte.

This is the price you pay for a prepaid sim card in a Three store around the UK. So on arrival you will need to locate the nearest phone shop next to your hotel via Google Maps. Bring your passport and get in line for a UK prepaid sim card. A lot of hassle I would say if you are on a holiday. But up to you…

For more detailed info check out my article about the best prepaid sim cards for tourists in the UK in 2024 .

Normally at international airports sim cards are more expensive but at London Heathrow Airport there is actually a sim card kiosk that sells prepaid sim cards for the UK that goes as low as $0.25 USD per Gigabyte. There is a Three UK prepaid sim card deal with 100 GB data for just £25 GBP, which is around $32 USD.

Click here to read my complete article with detailed info about buying a sim card at London Heathrow Airport .

After a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With an e-sim card that you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands.

For this convenience Traveltomtom definitely recommends to order one of the listed best e-sim cards for the United Kingdom in the comparison above.

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for the UK. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need. Because there is also an e-sim card for the UK for just $5 USD.

Data speed

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card that have to be mentioned is the data speed.

The e-sim cards you order on the internet are through a third party, a roaming partner or a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). This means these operates buy/request bandwidth of one of the main mobile internet operators in the UK.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through a roaming partner or an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy.

Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards ordered through a third party is in general less compared to a local prepaid sim card directly from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local UK prepaid sim card.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to the United Kingdom were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison, FAQ and tips and tricks it was easier for you to make a decision and order your favorite e-sim card for the UK right away.

Prepaid SIM Card for UK Visitors Comparison

How to purchase a travel sim card for the uk.

If you’re used to buying SIM cards in the USA , you might be pleasantly surprised to know that you can actually buy a local SIM card in many arrival ports of the UK such as Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. However, while this might seem like a convenient option, there are a few disadvantages to taking this approach.

The first and perhaps most obvious one is that if you’re coming to the UK after a long flight, you probably prefer to get as quickly as possible to wherever you’re staying, rather than dealing with shopping for SIM card for the UK.

Secondly, a lot of the SIM cards sold at airports often are marked up meaning you are paying more than you should. And if you’re only travelling in the UK for a short period of time, you probably don’t want to waste your precious time going to the various telecom shops.

Finally, it’s undoubtedly more convenient to be able to connect to data as soon as you land in the UK either to be able to order a cheaper taxi through an app or simply to let your family back home know that you’ve arrived!

With a plethora of great UK prepaid sim cards available online, I personally suggest travellers pre-order one a few weeks before they’re due to leave, pop it into their phone and know that they’ll have data as soon as they land in the UK!

If you prefer to pick one up when landing in the UK and are prepared to pay an inflated price, then you can head to shops like WH Smith and Sim Local or look for vending machines that exist in some airports.

Will a UK SIM Card Work in my Phone?

Before you travel to the UK and buy a SIM card, you want to make sure that your mobile phone is unlocked completely and will work with a different carrier to what you use back home.

If you have bought your mobile phone on a contract plan, you should call your provider at home and check to see if your phone can be unlocked. If you’re not under contract, your phone might still be locked but the provider should unlock it for free.

Be aware that your mobile phone provider might try to upsell you an expensive roaming package — this is undoubtedly the most costly option for travellers heading abroad. If, for whatever reason, you can’t get your phone unlocked, a cheaper option might be to purchase a mobile WiFi hotspot or an unlocked phone online.

Alternatively, you can always rely on public WiFI in cafes and your accommodation, however, this isn’t always ideal for a short trip! If you choose to go down this route, then make sure to subscribe to a quality VPN such as ExpressVPN .

Best SIM Cards for UK Tourists

These are some of the best UK SIM cards for travellers that can be purchased online and allow you to have data as soon as you land!

Three Prepaid SIM with 12GB Data

Whether you’re travelling only in the UK or looking for a SIM card for all of Europe , the Three Prepaid SIM with 12GB Data is undoubtedly one of the best deals available for travellers.

This SIM card comes with 12GB data, 3000 minutes of calls and 3000 texts which can be used for 30 days across a total of 71 countries including the EU countries and even in the US, Canada & Australia!

If you’re travelling for more than 30 days you have the option of recharging your phone, or alternatively, you can consider purchasing a Three SIM Card with 1-year validity here . The only difference to be aware of with these SIM cards is that they don’t include phone calls or SMS credits.

Some things to be aware of with this Three SIM is that you can only use calls or texts for other UK and other European numbers and it’s not possible to use this SIM card as a mobile hotspot.

PrePaid Europe (UK THREE) sim card 12GB data+3000 minutes+3000 texts for 30 days with FREE ROAMING / USE in 71 destinations including all European countries

Orange Prepaid SIM Card with 30GB Data

If the disadvantages of the Three Prepaid SIM card make it not a suitable option for your needs, you’ll be happy to know that the Orange Prepaid SIM card might be the perfect choice for you. It is available as a physical SIM card or an eSIM.

Coming with a whopping 30GB of data it also includes 120 minutes of phone calls and 1000 SMS that can be used to call or message any number around the world.

It also has no restrictions in terms of being able to use the SIM card as a hotspot so you have the guarantee of a reliable internet connection for your laptop!

This SIM card only has 14 days of validity however you can easily recharge online so it’s ideal for heavy data users that will probably be using this SIM card as a hotspot during their travels.

It also has a smaller country list than the Three Prepaid SIM card, as it only works in 30 countries however they do still cover all the major European destinations.

All in all, the Orange SIM card is a fantastic option for a UK sim card for visitors who need a large data allowance and the ability to make some short phone calls back home!

O2 Prepaid SIM Card with Unlimited Data

Another good option for travellers looking for a UK prepaid SIM card is the O2 SIM Card .

This SIM card gives you unlimited data in the UK, however, it doesn’t include any roaming options for Europe so it’s not a great option if you plan on country-hopping.

It also doesn’t include any calls or texts so it’s really designed for people that want a lot of data in the UK only.

The credit is valid for 30 days and it is possible to recharge this SIM card. You can also use it as a mobile hotspot, unlike the Three Prepaid SIM card.

Overall, the O2 SIM Card is a great SIM card choice if you’re planning to primarily stay in the UK and don’t need any calls or texts.

This SIM card utilises the O2 network and also includes unlimited calls and texts across the UK. You are also able to use 5GB for data roaming in the EU. There is also the option to pay extra if you would like to call or text the USA.

The Giffgaff SIM card is rechargeable and remains active for up to six months of no usage so is a good option if you plan to do multiple trips to the UK and don’t want to always be buying a new SIM card for every trip.

Cellhire Prepaid SIM Card with 12GB Data

If you’re simply looking for a throwaway SIM Card to use for a one-off trip to the UK & possibly Europe then the Cellhire SIM Card with 12GB data might be a good option for you.

This SIM card doesn’t come with any calls or texts included and isn’t rechargeable which means it’s most suitable for travellers looking for a basic data SIM card.

You can activate it in Europe rather than the UK so it’s ideal if you’re first stop is outside of the United Kingdom.

The Cellhire SIM Card can be purchased with different data limits and has an expiry of 60 days.

It can also be used as a hotspot making it great if you want to share data with friends across devices for a long period of time. In other words, this might be a great option for long-term backpackers in Europe!

If you’re a visitor looking for a travel SIM card for the UK, then you’ll be happy to know that there are a number of great options that can be purchased online to ensure you have internet access as soon as you land!

Hi Micheal, I am a visitor in Uk and will stay there for 3 weeks.I need just internet data service on my phone as I am planning to use it for just navigation or texting / calling via whatasapp whenever I am out .I will arrive in Heathrow. As far as I check it seems that there is no good deal for me at the airport.I need a simcard that can be bought and activated right there .I checked O2 deals ,but not sure any option would be there that can be bought right in place in any O2 stores or any other service providers that meets my requirement.what is your recommendation? Thanks in advance.

Hello Michael, Flying in from Austria (EU) we do not have the free roaming option between EU to GB and vice versa anymore due to Brexit . I’m going to London only for a five-day stay arriving in Stansted . I have a Samsung mobile A52 with Dual SIM and need a prepaid SIMcard only for roaming from London to EU with 4 to 5 GB data . What is your recommendation , Thanks

Hi Andy, The Orange or Three SIM would be my choice.

Hello Michael! I’ll be traveling to both UK and Greece for a total stay of 10 days, and would like to know which SIM card would suit my travel plans considering that I am arriving in UK first. I mainly need the internet data service as am planning to use both FaceTime and iMessage as my main means of communication. Thank you in advance!

Good evening Michael, I will be travelling thru Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Wales and England on self drive holiday mid next year. I am hoping to use Apple maps as a navigation tool in our hire car and am looking for a SIM only arrangement that provides enough data for 42 days touring (est. 20GB) and allows some text and call time. Any suggestions, as it seems nothing available currently achieves my requirements. Thanks Steve

Hi Stephen, I would suggest choosing a SIM card that you can recharge.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the info. Do you know average price of sims purchased locally? Since I’m travelling to Scotland next week I don’t think I’ll be able to order sim online.

Thanks, Hadas

Hi Hadas, It will depend entirely on how much data/credit you’ll want for your trip.

Hi Michael, I’ll be traveling through out Scotland and a portion of England, then to Republic of Ireland over the course of about 25 days. Is there one sim card that will work in both areas?

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, All the listed SIMs should work in both the UK and Ireland.

Hi Michael, I’m planning on being in the UK for 50 days. I notice most SIM cards are for 30 days or less. Do I need to purchase 2 sim cards? Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin, Several of the SIM cards listed in this article are rechargeable.

I will be in UK only for 32 days and spend much my time in rural West Somerset, Wales, and Cornwall.

Hi Michael!

Do you know which would work best in the Scottish Highlands?

Thank you in advance and Happy New Year.

The Orange SIM is a good option if travelling in more rural areas.

The Orange sim card works in most European countries and since Orange is one of the biggest local networks in Europe, you will always have fast and reliable connection speeds.

Is A Sim Card Essential When Traveling to the UK?

Yes, I would say a sim card is essential when traveling to the UK, in fact, I would say it is essential when traveling anywhere.

We use our phones for everything these days and that is because they make life so convenient.

Imagine you are walking around London and you need a cab but there is no free WiFi around and you have no sim card, what is the plan? Walking aimlessly around looking for somewhere with free WiFi so you can order an Uber instead of just ordering one.

The same goes for navigating with Google Maps, making plans with friends, staying in contact with loved ones, finding restaurants, booking trains, and lots more.

You can get by while traveling in the UK without a local sim card as you will be able to jump onto a free WiFi connection in most places. Airports, trains, restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, you name it, most of them will give you a free WiFi connection.

But, living on WiFi only is a pain and for the sake of $30, why not be connected all the time? Being able to use your phone whenever you like is also a safety measure worth taking so you can call for help when you need it.

Overall, it is worth buying a sim card for the UK in my eyes, your life becomes a whole lot easier and safer for a small price.

Things to Know Before Buying A Sim Card in the UK

Is your phone unlocked.

Only unlocked phones work with sim cards in the UK or anywhere else for that matter.

If you bought your phone yourself it will already be unlocked. If you got it for free with a contract through your provider, it could be locked to said provider.

To unlock your phone, just call your provider and request they unlock it, it should only take a few minutes.

Are You Using A GSM Phone?

Phones use either CDMA or GSM technology to stay connected to a network. A GSM phone will not work on a CDMA network, and vice versa.

Most of the world uses GSM including the Uk whereas North America uses both GSM and CDMA.

If you are from North America and you use either Sprint or Verizon, you may have a CDMA phone and it will not work with any sim cards for the UK.

The only solution is to buy an affordable unlocked GSM phone for your trip.

How to Buy A Sim Card in the UK

Buying a sim card before traveling to the uk.

Buying a sim card before traveling to the UK does have its advantages. You will receive the sim card before your trip and can put it in your phone before you land in the UK.

All the sim cards featured in the article can be ordered online before your trip.

Buying A Sim Card in the UK

Buying a sim card in the UK does come with its benefits though. Yes, you will have to find a shop and buy the sim card, but you will get much better deals than you will by buying them online.

EE for example offers way more data, mins, and sms’ for a smaller price than all the sim cards featured in the article. But, you have to buy it in the UK or have a UK address to order one.

How Much Does A Sim Card in the UK Cost?

Sim cards are free in the UK, but you will need to pay for a data/calls/texts package to be put onto the sim card.

How to Activate & Top Up Your UK Sim Card

Activating and topping up your UK sim card is super easy. You can either activate the sim or top it up online or by calling your mobile provider’s customer service.

A lot of prepaid sim cards you order online are already activated, and if you buy your UK sim in a shop in the UK, ask them to activate it there and then.

EU Data Roaming

All the sim cards featured in the article come with EU data roaming, meaning you can use the calls/texts/data in your package all over Europe too.

Not every network provider allows free EU data roaming after Brexit though, so be sure to check if you plan to go to Europe.

Managing Your Mobile Data in the UK

For anyone who is traveling on a serious budget and wants to conserve data, here are some tips:

  • Keep your phone in airplane mode when you are not using it
  • Use apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Netflix on WiFi
  • Only use Whatsapp and other essential apps when not on WiFi
  • Download the area you are traveling around on Google Maps on WiFi for offline use

Visiting Or Moving To the UK: Using Your Cellphone & Best UK SIM Cards

uk travel sim

Find out how to use your cellphone in the UK & see the best UK SIM cards for visitors and new UK residents.

uk travel sim

In this article, we’ll discuss cell phone compatibility on UK cellular mobile networks. We’ll also look at the different ways of using your cell phone in the UK, including through international roaming or using a local UK SIM card or eSIM. Finally, we’ll compare the best value prepaid SIMs that are available for tourists, visitors and new residents to the UK.

Cell Phone & Network Compatibility

Network frequencies & bands.

EE

In the UK, there are only four companies that provide cellular mobile coverage: EE , O2 , Three & Vodafone . Each of them offers 99% population coverage across the UK using 2G (GSM), 3G (WCDMA & HSPA) and 4G (LTE) technologies. In addition, 5G coverage (NR) is available in most major UK towns and cities .

The four cellular coverage providers utilise the following bands and frequencies in the UK:

The most important bands for your phone to support are shown in bold. Most modern cellphones should at least support a couple of UK bands, providing you’re using a device that’s compatible with GSM or LTE technology. Additional bands and frequencies are shown in italics – you may get faster speeds if your phone has support for these bands.

Alongside the four cellular coverage providers, there are a number of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). These MVNOs “piggyback” on signal from one of four cellular coverage providers. For instance, giffgaff uses coverage from the O2 network and Lyca Mobile uses coverage from the EE network .

If you’re unsure about the bands and frequencies supported on your cellphone, consult your handset manufacturer’s documentation or product specifications. For instance, you can see a list of 4G & 5G bands supported on the iPhone .

Roaming VS Using A UK SIM Card

uk travel sim

If you’re only visiting the UK for a short amount of time, roaming on your normal domestic SIM card can sometimes be the easiest solution. In advance of your travel to the UK, you should check with your cellular provider on the costs of using your phone in the UK. You should also ensure that international roaming is enabled on your account.

If you’re planning to stay in the UK for a little bit longer, it’s normally worthwhile getting a local UK SIM card. This will probably be more convenient and cheaper than roaming on your normal domestic SIM card. Prices start from about £10 (approx US$12.90) for a prepaid SIM card in the UK, with one month’s usage included in that price. This will also cover your cellphone usage when you travel to other European countries. You’ll get a UK phone number on your UK SIM (starting with +44).

Getting a UK SIM Card

uk travel sim

Where possible, we’d strongly recommend getting your UK SIM before you arrive. Not only does it avoid an unnecessary trip to get your SIM card from a shop, it can save you a lot of hassle as you’ll have a SIM card that’s charged and ready-to-use. You can also save money when you buy your SIM card in advance.

At present, giffgaff is our recommended SIM card for anyone who is visiting or moving to the UK. Unlike most other networks, they offer free international delivery on all of their SIM cards. You can also activate and recharge your SIM card using a credit card or debit card that’s registered outside the UK. This differs from most other networks where you’ll normally need to use a bank card that’s registered inside the UK.

Alternatively, if you’re travelling to the UK with an eSIM-ready phone (such as the iPhone 11, Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later versions of each device), Lyca Mobile offers prepaid UK eSIMs. You’ll get instant online delivery of your eSIM so there’s no need to wait for a SIM card to arrive in the post. Your plan will only begin when your phone connects to a UK network.

If you’re not able to order a SIM card or eSIM in advance, it’s also possible to get a SIM card upon arrival in the UK.

Where possible, you should avoid getting your SIM card upon arrival at the airport (e.g. at Heathrow or Gatwick). Although there are a couple of retailers that offer UK SIM cards at the airport, they’re normally grossly overpriced. Instead, you’ll save money by waiting until you arrive in the city. You can get a UK SIM card from most cell phone stores, grocery stores and gas stations (also known as mobile phone shops, supermarkets and petrol stations in the local lingo). You should expect to pay a couple of pounds to get your SIM card in-person, plus £10 or £15 for your initial top-up or charge. Our full guide to prepaid SIM cards in the UK will give you an overview of the available options.

uk travel sim

At the end of your trip to the UK, it’s worth holding on to your SIM card. Just make sure you’ve turned off any “auto-renew” settings so you’re not being charged for a UK plan that you’re not using when you go back home. Your prepaid SIM card will normally remain active for another 6 months after the last chargeable use. Therefore, if you’re planning to visit the UK again on a future trip, it might be possible to re-use your SIM.

Note on Pay Monthly deals: If you’re moving to the UK on a longer-term basis, you may be tempted to get a Pay Monthly SIM card . Before you’re able to apply, you’ll need to be a UK resident and you’ll need to pass a UK credit check . You’ll also need a UK bank account from which your monthly payments can be taken. For this reason, unless you’ve already lived in the UK for a significant amount of time, we’d recommend starting on a prepaid deal from Lyca Mobile or giffgaff.

Using Your Phone In Europe

uk travel sim

On giffgaff’s prepaid SIM card, there’s a fair use limit of 5GB per month in the following European destinations:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy (includes Sardinia and Sicily), Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal (includes Azores and Madeira), the Republic of Ireland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (includes Canary Islands and Balearic Islands) and Sweden

Lyca Mobile also offers inclusive European roaming on all of their plans. The fair use limit depends on the plan you choose (e.g. it’s 5GB per month on the £5 plan and 12GB per month on the £10 plan).

Other Useful Information

Terminology.

uk travel sim

In the UK and Europe, the cellular industry tends to use different terminology to what is used in North American countries. Namely:

  • Cellphones are normally referred to as mobile phones in Europe.
  • Carriers or cellular networks are more commonly referred to as mobile networks .
  • Prepaid SIM cards are normally advertised as Pay As You Go SIM cards .
  • Instead of re-filling or re-charging your prepaid plan , people normally talk about topping up their Pay As You Go account .

When shopping and comparing plans, it’s worth knowing that taxes are already included in the advertised price. In the UK, this refers to value added tax (VAT), which is similar to sales tax in other countries.

International Dialling

uk travel sim

If your friends or family members would like to call you from outside the UK, they’ll need to replace the zero at the start of your phone number with +44. This will give your international phone number (so, for instance, 0 7123 456 789 would become +44 7123 456 789).

Similarly, if you’re calling abroad from a UK SIM card, you’ll need to add the relevant international calling prefix before dialling out to that number.

Useful Resources

uk travel sim

If you’re making phone calls on a UK SIM card, your inclusive minutes will normally allow you to call other UK landline and mobile numbers (that’s most phone numbers beginning with 01, 02, 03 and 07). If you’re calling another phone number that isn’t included in this range, find out how much the phone call will cost .

If you’re looking to get connected to the internet without using a cellular data allowance, many locations now offer a free wi-fi connection (including many coffee shops, grocery stores, train stations and more). In the UK, the main providers of public wi-fi are BT, O2, Sky (The Cloud) and Virgin Media.

For getting around, it’s worth using the Transport for London (TfL) and National Rail Enquiries websites. They’re both invaluable for providing you with information on how to get around the UK (TfL covers public transport services in London whereas National Rail Enquiries covers rail travel across the rest of the UK). You can also use Google Maps for transit directions, as well as CityMapper in major urban areas.

Have a smooth trip and enjoy your visit to the UK!

I followed the advice in this article for 2 phones during a recent visit to England. One phone used a physical SIM and I used Giffgaff, ordering a SIM card well in advance. This worked flawlessly. The other phone supported ESIM and I used Lyca. Never got it to work in the UK – no data, no text, no phone service – despite a dozen calls to their help line. When we were in Dover, it picked up France and I finally got data. Total waste of 5 pounds, but at least it was only 5 pounds.

Pat Freedman said:

Thank you for your very helpful article. I have 3 questions about using GiffGaff in Scotland (or other countries): (1) Does it allow calling on Wi-Fi? (2) How are Whats App calls and messages charged–as regular calls and text messages or as data? (3) If I need to receive a text message to my US number for two-factor authentication (for example, from a bank or credit card company), should I remove the GiffGaff SIM and put the Verizon SIM with my US number back in? And then can I switch back to the GiffGaffSIM after I receive the text to the US number?

Ken replied:

Hi Pat, Thanks for your comment. 1. giffgaff doesn’t offer Wi-Fi Calling at present, though you can of course use a voice-over-IP app such as WhatsApp over WiFi. Regular phone calls will need to be made over the 3G or 4G network. 2. Any calls or texts made over WhatsApp would simply count towards the download limit on your plan. So additional charges from giffgaff 🙂 3. Yes – exactly. Unless you have a dual-SIM phone that allows you to use both the Verizon and giffgaff SIM cards at the same time, you’ll need to remove the giffgaff SIM and replace it with your Verizon SIM for you to be able to receive any text messages on your normal US number. Hope this helps! Ken

Hi, everyone. I’m after a quick bit of advice regarding UK sims:

1. Best ones for whilst back in the UK? 2. Best ones for when back in Oz, but need to continue using UK number on an infrequent basis? 3. Best ones for international (AUD) top-up?

Use case is so that I can continue with accessing my UK bank account on-line (they’re cracking down on UK residency and phone number).

Any good tips, please?

Hi Ed, Thanks for your comment. I think giffgaff could be a good option as you can top it up with an international bank card from Australia. Also, you only need to buy a goodybag plan when you’re in the UK. When you go back to Australia, you can switch to traditional Pay As You Go to keep your UK number without paying any regular monthly fees. You can also use it to receive text messages in Australia at no cost. Hope this helps, Ken

The best SIM cards for travelling in the UK

If you’re headed to the UK soon, be sure to grab one of the best travel SIM card deals going to ensure that you stay connected and communicating while in the United Kingdom.

What to consider when roaming in the UK

UK sim card

England, don’t make that mistake amongst the locals) is a highly popular destination for Australian travellers, whether it’s to spend a holiday or get some serious work done. Staying online with your smartphone can be a key part of making the most of your time when in the UK, but what’s the best approach to doing so?

Ideally you want to save money and have the greatest degree of convenience when doing so. There’s a few key ways to do that depending on your phone, budget and the length of your trip. Here’s our picks for some of the best travel SIMs, travel eSIMs, roaming and local telco deals.

Three UK 25GB Plan

Three UK SIM card

Most travel SIM providers will include the UK almost by default, because it’s one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations hands-down.

However, most travel SIM providers also offer fairly lousy rates for calls, texts and data within the UK, making it tricky to find a real bargain. The growth of eSIM options has only made this trickier, with many providers no longer shipping physical SIMs to Australia, though some local shipping options and resellers such as SIMCorner do still offer this kind of service.

The Three UK offer of 25GB plus unlimited standard calls and texts to standard UK landlines is amongst the better deals you’ll find if you do want to go down the travel SIM route and need a physical SIM to drop into your phone.

Best eSIM for UK

Airalo uki mobile.

UKI Mobile

Airalo’s eSIM offering for the UK has the rather awkward name of “Uki Mobile”, but that aside it’s an easy to use and generally affordable option, with plans providing between 1GB to 20GB of data an expiry periods between 7 and 30 days – more than long enough to pop down to Buckingham Palace for a spot of tea with the King, if you’re so inclined.

Pricing runs from $US5 to US$36 which certainly isn’t the lowest prices you can pay, but the beauty of using eSIM is that you can configure pretty much everything straight from your phone before you travel, freeing you from the difficulties of sourcing SIM cards, finding your SIM tool, dropping your SIM tool, picking it up and realising that the nano SIM went flying when you stood up to pick up your SIM tool… yeah, we’ve been there.

The catch here – as it always is – is that you must have an unlocked, eSIM-capable handset to use Airalo’s services. Airalo does not offer traditional physical SIM cards. eSIM is far more commonly found in premium priced or at least high mid-range smartphones, so if you’re carrying around an older or unsupported model, this may not be the deal for you.

Best Australian deal for UK roaming

Vodafone $5 roaming.

If you’d rather keep your mobile number to the one SIM – virtual or not – then you’ll need to check whether your telco offers any kind of prepaid or additional roaming service. Plenty will offer PAYG roaming, but that’s typically on pricey per-MB terms that will sap your wallet so rapidly it’ll make your head spin.

Vodafone’s $5/day international roaming includes the UK, and it’s hands-down the easiest way to keep yourself online and calling while you’re roaming through Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England. That $5 per day buys you access to whatever inclusions your plan has, which these days basically means unlimited calls and texts to Australian numbers, plus your base line data inclusion. You don’t get “unlimited” data with speed caps as you would at home, however. Instead, every additional 1GB of data you need will cost you an additional $5 on top.

Here’s a range of suitable Vodafone plans to pair with its $5 international roaming deal:

You should consider how long you plan to roam for, however. $5 per day might not seem like much, but many Australians take longer breaks in the UK, if only because that flight is seriously lengthy and it’s not really worth popping over for the weekend. The longer you stay, the more those $5 charges will add up.

Vodafone isn’t the only player in the roaming space worth considering; here’s a range of telco plans that have international roaming options available at additional cost:

If your current phone doesn’t support eSIM and you want to use an eSIM plan when you travel in the UK, we’ve got some bad news for you. There’s simply no way to add eSIM functionality to a phone that didn’t have it the day it came out of the factory.

If eSIM is a vital part of your strategy, resell (or at least responsibly recycle) your old handset and pick up a new one with eSIM as a feature.

If your phone does support eSIMs, then it’s quite easy to set up your eSIM before you travel. We’ve got a handy guide to setting up eSIMs for Apple iPhone and Android here.

The UK does have some wider ranging public WiFi networks, and it’s largely assumed across most accommodation services as well.

As such, the absolute lowest-cost way to travel the UK while staying online (sometimes) would be to use public WiFi networks. You do have keep in mind that they’re subject to a lot of variation in broadband quality, and you’re also at the mercy of whoever might be sniffing in around your data packets unless you’re also using a VPN .

A little smart preparation, especially if your UK hotel has decent Wi-Fi can pay off in this respect, though. Loading up offline maps, entertainment (music, podcasts, even streaming shows if your provider has them for offline) before you leave your hotel for the day can give you a lot of scope for entertainment and navigation as you take in the UK, meaning you’ll only need those public WiFi networks for Instagramming your spotted dick.

It's a dessert. Stop giggling in the back there!

If you're gearing up for a trip to the United Kingdom and want solid network coverage while you're there, a travel eSIM is a great option. These handy virtual SIM cards allow you to access local mobile networks at your destination.

In this guide, I'll show you the benefits of using embedded international SIM cards. Plus, you'll get my top recommendations - as a traveler, wireless expert, and UK expat - for the best eSIM for UK travel.

Keep reading as we look at some eSIM options, cost information, and FAQs. Let's dive into the details!

Best overall travel eSIM

Airalo, a household name in the world of SIM cards for travelers, offers affordable and user-friendly plans on major UK networks. Its straightforward plans and reasonable data prices make Airalo a solid all-around choice as the best eSIM for UK travel.

Airalo regional plans for Europe include the UK, so you're all set. SMS and voice calling are available on the global plans, which are a little more expensive than local and regional.

Like any other phone plan, Airalo has its advantages and drawbacks. Below, I've used my industry expertise to compile a list of the things I like, as well as a few downsides.

  • 200+ destinations
  • 7 - 90 days validity period
  • Prices start at around $5 for a week
  • Local, regional, & global plans
  • Wide selection of options
  • Good LTE coverage
  • Mobile hotspot usage
  • Validity starts on connection, not activation
  • Voice minutes only global eSIM
  • Customer service only by message only

Airalo UK Mobile eSIMs cover you in England, Scotland, Wales, & Northern Ireland. If you're sticking to the UK only during your trip, this provider is one of the best values.

Best long-term eSIM

Nomad offers no-nonsense data-only plans at 4G LTE speeds. Its rates are reasonable, and unlimited data packages are also available (up to 2 GB of high-speed data per day, then 512 Kbps).

Pick from 1 GB to 20 GB of data with validity periods between 7 and 30 days. Unlimited plans are valid for between 1 and 7 days.

  • 165+ destinations
  • 7 - 30 days validity period
  • Prices start at $7 for one week
  • Simple plan choices
  • Taxes & fees are included in the price
  • Unlimited data plans available
  • Reliable major networks
  • Mobile hotspot supported
  • SMS plans available
  • Data throttling after 2 GB on unlimited
  • Validity begins upon activation
  • No voice/phone number

Nomad is an effective solution if you want only data and you want to avoid being overwhelmed with a ton of different plans. We don't love the fact that the unlimited plan has such a low throttle threshold, but it does take the pressure off of you having to check your data usage constantly.

Best unlimited eSIM

Holafly is based in Spain and boasts a wide selection of unlimited data plans for international travel. The Holafly UK package features a robust eight validity periods, ranging from 5 to 90 days.

That said, if you're thinking about using Holafly to supply a connection to your laptop for work as you move about the globe, unfortunately, the provider doesn't allow mobile hotspot usage.

However, a Holafly eSIM for the UK could be the answer to your mobile data dilemma for the average vacation or family visit.

  • 170+ destinations
  • Unlimited data
  • 5 - 90 days validity period
  • Prices start at $19 for 5 days
  • Unlimited data plans
  • Solid 4G coverage
  • A wide variety of validity dates
  • User-friendly app
  • Throttling after 2 GB daily
  • No mobile hotspot

Holafly has been growing since its founding in 2017, and for good reason. It's one of the few providers offering unlimited data for international use while keeping its plans at reasonable prices.

What is a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM (or embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that enables you to connect to mobile data plans for the country or region you visit. One helpful aspect of this convenient alternative is that you will no longer have to search for a local SIM card when traveling.

The majority of the newest phone models can use eSIM. These phones include iPhone 13 and newer versions and a diverse range of Samsung smartphones, Google Pixels, and other Android devices.

With numerous options available for UK travel, I've chosen providers that offer affordable prices, versatile plan choices, and essential features for travelers.

Important note: In order to utilize a travel eSIM, it's essential for your phone to be unlocked. Please consult your current carrier to determine if your device is locked.

How travel eSIMs work

With this user-friendly product, all you need to do is scan a QR code. Note that you'll need a second phone to do so. The QR code will bring you to the activation process.

Once activated, your device will automatically connect to nearby networks, guaranteeing a dependable internet connection and phone service without the inconvenience of having to search for a local prepaid SIM card.

As for usage, most international eSIM providers offer an app to track your data usage and manage your top-ups.

Why should I get an eSIM for travel to the UK?

  • Convenience: By managing your plan digitally, traveling to a new country becomes more convenient. With the instant activation of eSIMs, you no longer need to search for a local store or vending machine to buy a physical SIM card when you arrive.
  • Cost-effectiveness: eSIMs allow you to sign up for local data plans that are generally more affordable compared to international roaming from your home country carrier. Multiple international carriers competing with each other leads to competitive pricing, resulting in lower costs for you.
  • Versatile: Easily manage multiple plans at once by storing them simultaneously. Seamlessly switch between your home plan and local or regional travel plans without changing SIM cards.
  • Enhanced security: The use of eSIM minimizes the possibility of losing personal data and internet connectivity due to misplacing, damaging, or having a SIM card stolen.

How to choose the best eSIM for UK travel

When deciding on the best eSIM for UK travel, it's important to look at your needs and usage habits, as various options are available, each offering distinct advantages.

Where is your destination?

Will you be visiting multiple regions or staying within Great Britain? While most travel plans used to work in both Europe and the UK, Brexit changed things, and that may not be the case with any given provider.

If your travels will take you between the UK and Europe, verify that your plan will have you covered across those borders without any hassle.

How much data do you need?

If you need a lot of data while traveling, you'll want to look into unlimited data plans. And be aware, that most international unlimited data plans have daily high-speed data caps, so read the fine print so you know what you're actually getting.

Light users should only need a modest data limit. Email and Google Maps navigation require minimal data. Plus, if you're going to have access to Wi-Fi on a regular basis, you can adjust your plan needs accordingly.

How long will you be abroad?

Multiple providers offer a variety of plans, giving you the flexibility to choose data plans between a few days or even up to a year or longer. If you work remotely or travel extensively as a digital nomad, choose a provider with longer validity, like Holafly. For shorter trips, Airalo should be fine.

When selecting a service, it's important to verify the duration of validity and the data allowance. I also advise waiting to activate your new eSIM until you're at the airport and connected to the Wi-Fi while waiting in the lengthy passport control queue. This is because the validity period for some international eSIM plans starts when you activate.

Do you need international calling?

Some eSIMs for the UK come with a local number that you can use to make phone calls within the country or to other countries in the region you plan to visit. However, most travel eSIMs only offer data services, so you'll need to rely on messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Skype or make Wi-Fi calls.

If you decide to include voice minutes, carefully review the terms and conditions to ensure you can call the specific country you require.

It's worth noting that certain providers, notably Airhubapp, may block your data access if you make calls or send SMS outside of the permitted area. Therefore, it's crucial that you familiarize yourself with all the details regarding usage before selecting a provider.

Best eSIM for UK travel FAQs

Is switching to an esim for uk travel worth it.

That depends on your personal preferences. That said, it's cheaper than roaming, and it's hard to beat the convenience of simply downloading your travel phone plan into your device.

How do I activate my eSIM for UK travel?

First, verify whether you need to activate it once you land in England or if you can do it beforehand. Next, scan the provided QR code and follow the travel eSIM profile installation instructions. You will need a second phone on hand for this.

What if I need more data on my eSIM for UK travel?

Most providers allow you to top up your plan while you're traveling. Check for this option in the app or your chosen provider's website.

Recap - What's the best travel eSIM for the UK?

When you visit the UK, there are many options to choose from to stay connected. Whether your main concern is having unlimited data, a long period of validity, or finding the most cost-effective option, you can be confident that you'll find the best eSIM for UK travel that suits your needs.

6 Amazing Things We Learned on Our American Road Trip

6 Amazing Things We Learned on Our American Road Trip

Frequently asked questions.

Let’s face it — life’s pretty hard in the modern world without a smartphone. If you’re travelling overseas to a country where you don’t speak the language, planning an adventure a little off the beaten track, or just want to check the weather during your first night in a new town, you’re going to need a working phone.

While your regular phone might be OK on the hotel Wi-Fi, only travel SIM cards can allow you to use phone data, send messages and make calls without racking up hefty roaming charges from your at-home mobile service provider.

Deciding which travel SIM card is right for your needs depends on a few things. At SimCorner, we’ve partnered with some of the largest telecommunication companies in the world to keep you connected, wherever your destination may be.

Just some of our international travel SIM cards for different regions include:

  • Europe — Stay connected with a Europe SIM card through Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and more.
  • USA, Canada and Mexico — Travelling the Americas just got a heap easier with our bundles for the continent.
  • Asia — Make everyone at home jealous while you stay in touch from Thailand, Japan, China, India, Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam.
  • New Zealand, Australia and Fiji — Enjoy a multi-country prepaid SIM, or opt for one of our country-specific travel SIM cards for your destination.
  • United Kingdom — Our UK SIM cards can be used in Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales.
  • South America — For use in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Uruguay.
  • Africa — Our international travel SIM card for the African continent will keep you connected in Chad, Congo Republic, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar Republic, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda.
  • Middle East — Never skip a beat with a prepaid SIM for Egypt, Kuwait, Israel, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Turkey and UAE (Dubai).

Can’t find the country you’re looking for in our list? Our international travel SIM cards may still be able to service your destination. Check with our team if you have a specific destination you’re unsure about, and we can let you know the best option for staying connected.

If you have questions about comparing different travel SIM cards and which prepaid SIM will be best for your needs in a particular country, check out our blog . It’s full of handy information you should know before your trip and includes plenty of nitty-gritty details about how different prepaid SIMs stack up against each other.

All of the international travel SIM cards from SimCorner are designed especially for travellers, pre-loaded with set features and without any hidden fees or expensive roaming data charges. Once you’ve bought your prepaid SIM, you’ll never be charged for anything extra when you start using it.

Our prepaid SIMS come with plenty of data, so you can make internet calls back home, and video loved ones from the top of a mountain or a sunny beach. Prepaid data allows you to easily check directions when you’re out and about and share images of your trip in real-time.

Plus, our travel SIM cards come with thousands of minutes of inter-SIM calls, meaning if you and a family member or friend both purchase one, it’s free to contact each other during your trip. How easy is that?

All of our prepaid SIMs have a 15-day or 30-day service period from the date of activation — so you won’t start using up your data before putting the travel SIM card into your phone.

Are you going to be away for longer, or are you planning on using some serious data while you’re away for remote work or long chats with Mum? Simply purchase multiple prepaid SIMs. Once you’ve used up your data on one, you can switch it out for a new prepaid SIM and keep connected.

Some of our travel SIM cards also come with an option to top up credit on your existing SIM. Before you buy one of our prepaid SIMs, you can check if this is the case under ‘Things to Know’ on the product page.

All of our international travel SIM cards are supplied by reputable telecommunications providers in different parts of the world. Using them is safe and easy, but you will need to make sure your mobile device is unlocked before you leave for your big holiday. Having a postpaid phone on a plan with a local carrier isn’t the same as having a locked device — but if you’re not sure, your mobile service provider can double-check for you and help you unlock your device for easy international use.

SimCorner offer different pay-as-you-go travel SIM cards. Some have phone numbers noted on the packed, others get sent by the provider to your phone or if they are data only, you won’t have a local number or be able to make direct calls and send direct SMS messages. But your generous data package will allow you to use any internet-based calling or messaging service; think WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Viber, Snapchat, Skype, iMessage or Signal.

If you add credit to a Viber or Skype account, you’ll be able to make direct calls through those services on your international travel SIM card.

Yep! A prepaid SIM won’t alter, delete or change any information on your phone — you’ll still be able to view your apps, messages and any other information saved to the handset. If your contacts are saved in the storage on your current SIM, it’s a good idea to transfer these to your phone’s internal storage or back them up so you can access them at any time. Your WhatsApp and Messenger contacts will all still be on your phone.

When you receive your travel SIM card from SimCorner, the first step you’ll need to do is register it with us. Then, wait until you’ve reached your destination to insert the SIM card into your phone — it will activate from anywhere in the world, so you want your daily countdown to start when you’ve arrived in the country. Make sure your mobile data and data roaming services are turned on and fully enabled so you’re ready to start taking in the sights and sounds like a local!

Most of our travel SIM cards are compatible with mobiles only, meaning they won’t work on iPads or other tablets. However, you can use a hotspot or tether from your mobile to another mobile phone, laptop or tablet and share your data across multiple devices. We do however offer iPads or tablets Data SIM options as well for certain countries and regions.

SimCorner offers around-the-clock support and a money-back guarantee on all of our prepaid SIM cards — you just need to let us know about any problems as they occur. When you reach your destination, we recommend activating your SIM card at the airport, so you have a Wi-Fi connection to reach out to customer support if anything doesn’t look right.

If you’ve been a clever clog and thought ahead with a prepaid SIM to your holiday destination, you might start to rest on your laurels. Don’t forget accessories to keep you in touch throughout your trip!

Shop our range of accessories to ensure you have all the travel essentials; from universal power adaptors to wireless phone charger power banks, we’ve got everything you need to stay connected no matter where you are in the world. While you’re there, why not pick up a mask for the plane and a journal to keep all of your brilliant holiday thoughts in?

SimCorner is proud to deliver all over the UK, shipping from London. In general, your order should take around 4-6 business days to metro UK areas.

Need it faster? We also offer tracking on our orders, so you can see when your order’s coming. We also have an express post option which will arrive in 2-3 business days.

If you’ve got a solo trip, a family holiday or a big adventure with the gang planned, a prepaid SIM card will keep you in touch with those back home and prepare you for any challenges that come your way.

To pick the right data plan and prepaid SIM for your holiday, get in touch with our friendly team today. We’ll be able to talk you through all the options available and set you up with the best value plan that will suit your needs.

Holafly eSIM User Reviews

Trustpilot

DON’T stress about your phone service when you travel abroad! I used Holafly to travel home to California this year. The instructions were super easy to follow and I had no problems with the service for the whole 20 days that I used it. It was nice not to worry about how much my phone company was going to charge me for service abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions about the UK eSIM

When does my data plan begin?

Your plan activates immediately upon connecting your eSIM to any supported network. For example, if you bought a 1-day mobile plan and you activate your plan at 10 AM, it remains active for a full 24 hours, concluding at 10 AM the following day.

Can I make phone calls and send messages with my Holafly eSIM?

The UK eSIM only allows you to use mobile data. It does not include a local phone number for mobile calls or messages. You can still make calls using apps like WhatsApp.

Which devices work with the eSIM card?

You can check if your smartphone is eSIM compatible here.

When will I receive my eSIM?

Once you purchase your eSIM, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions to install it immediately using a QR code or manual code. Remember that once the eSIM is purchased, it cannot be returned.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

You don’t need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You’ll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.

How quick is the Holafly eSIM?

The Holafly eSIM service offers maximum speed coverage (4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose?

Whichever is available for your destinations and suits your travel needs better! You can choose plans from 1 to 90 days.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Is Holafly’s UK eSIM compatible with iPhone devices?

Holafly’s eSIMs are compatible with a wide range of iPhone devices, including most models released since the iPhone XS. Check out our full list of eSIM compatible devices ,including all iPhone devices, Android devices, Google Pixel devices, Samsung devices, and more.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Italy eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR confirmation code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original and a new phone. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the new device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my physical SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using a dual SIM phone or an Apple device, you can use your physical SIM card and your eSIM in the same device. Choose the SIM card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your SIM card activated, your mobile data network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network will I connect at my destination?

Your eSIM will connect to all the local phone networks that Holafly partners up with. You can review them in the Technical Specs

Is Holafly my best option?

It is! Of course if you ask us which eSIM UK card is the best, we will naturally answer it’s ours! Why? Because of our unlimited data, the flexibility to select a custom number of days, and many more special features.

What is the difference between an eSIM and a physical SIM?

Both digital and physical SIM cards connect your device to a mobile network, but they work and provide benefits in very different ways: physical SIM cards, are made of plastic and must be inserted into the device in order to work, while an eSIM, or digital SIM, does not need to be inserted into the phone. Instead, it can be installed by simply scanning a QR code to activate the service. Physical SIM cards can be vulnerable to theft, damage, or loss, while eSIMs don’t face these potential issues.

Can I install an eSIM for the UK before traveling?

Yes, it is possible. You can install an Holafly eSIM for the UK before you travel, but you should activate the mobile data plan when you arrive at your destination, so you don’t start using data plan prematurely.

However, using international roaming with your home carrier to get data could cost hundreds of dollars. This is why prepaid eSIM cards are the fastest growing option for international tourists who own an eSIM-compatible device.

In this guide, you’ll find the 5 best prepaid SIM and eSIM options available for tourists in the United Kingdom in 2024, including their pricing and data plans. Let’s get going!

Facts About Prepaid SIMs in the UK

Where to buy physical prepaid sim cards for the united kingdom.

The UK provides a convenient experience for tourists to purchase prepaid SIM cards, widely available in airports, convenience stores, and mobile phone shops. The market is competitive, offering numerous options for visitors.

A man standing in an airport looking up at a flight schedule

1. British Airports

Tourists landing at Heathrow or Gatwick can find prepaid SIM cards from EE, O2, and Vodafone. Kiosks and shops situated within the airport sell cards starting at roughly 10 GBP, inclusive of an initial data allotment.

2. Network Provider Retail Stores in the UK

EE, O2, and Vodafone have a strong retail presence across the UK, offering prepaid SIM cards that cater well to tourists' needs.

uk travel sim

You could also consider having a physical prepaid SIM card shipped to your house before you travel by shopping on online sites (like Amazon). You’ll often find small SIM card providers that partner with the large British networks (like EE or O2) to connect your phone to mobile data. You could even consider buying a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device.

Shopping online requires a little travel pre-planning but allows you to search around for better prices and data plans that meet your needs.

The easiest online option, and the one that we highly recommend, is to purchase an eSIM. These digital SIMs can be instantly activated straight from your smartphone from apps like Airalo and Holafly , which then give you seamless access to data in your travel destination.

Registration Process For Prepaid SIM Cards in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, no registration is necessary, and you don't need to show your passport to the issuer.

It's worth noting that an increasing number of countries are requiring registration from mobile phone users for security reasons, where purchasing a prepaid SIM card requires consumers to provide proof of identity.

For the countries that have these Know-Your-Customer (KYC) laws, registration will also apply to eSIMs. However, eSIMs do have the benefit of digital registration as opposed to the hassle of an in-person process. If your eSIM is data only (no local phone number), then you may be able to get connected without registering your info.

Cheap Physical Prepaid SIM Card Options For UK Travel

Here are some of the most popular options for plastic SIM cards for tourists in UK:

EE provides excellent coverage, including a WiFi signal at every London Underground station, which is crucial since there's no phone signal underground. However, EE does not allow prepaid customers to access their 5G network, limiting them to 4G/LTE speeds.

EE's prepaid SIM card deals, all valid for 30 days, include: £10 for 5 GB of data + 500 minutes + unlimited SMS, £15 for 15 GB, £20 for 70 GB, and £30 for 100 GB, all with unlimited calls/SMS in the UK. Note: Data roaming in the EU is not included.

O2 provides four prepaid SIM card options in the UK; the SIM card is free with a top-up required for one of the pay-as-you-go plans, all valid for 30 days.

For £10, get 7 GB of data with unlimited calls and SMS, up to 100 GB for £30. Free EU roaming is included in the first three packages.

Best Digital Prepaid e-SIMs For Tourists in the United Kingdom

Want to ditch physical plastic SIM cards? You can conveniently download and active the following international eSIMs from your smartphone instead.

Airalo is an excellent eSIM provider for international travel. For the UK, they offer eSIMs from 1GB for 7 days at $5 up to 20GB for 30 days at $36, and other plans in between. It was super easy for us to set up in the app and purchase instantly.

Holafly offers unlimited data volume packages for international travel. Holafly's data packages for the UK cost between $6 and $139 once off and are valid from 1 to 90 days, offering peace of mind that you'll never run out of data.

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including the UK, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

More info: Read our Holafly review or visit their website .

Yesim, a Swiss-based eSIM service, offers flexible plans for 3GB, 5GB, 10GB, and 20GB. The pricing of these eSIMs for the United Kingdom range from $9.90 to $30.80.

The 3GB plan is good for 7 days while the 5GB one is good for 15 days. The 15GB and 30GB plans both last for 30 days.

To make sure your phone can support eSIM cards, read our list of eSIM-compatible phones .

Largest Mobile Network Operators in the United Kingdom

eSIMs are great because they connect to the best network available wherever you are. Your phone might connect to EE or O2, depending on your location, at no extra cost. In contrast, if you buy a SIM card directly from one British telecom provider, then your phone will only access that provider's network.

In the United Kingdom, expect to see these names as you connect to data on your travels:

  • Vodafone: Known for its strong international roaming options and broadband services.
  • O2: Offers appealing loyalty rewards and flexible custom plans.
  • EE: Superior 5G network and extensive coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prepaid SIM Cards For Travel in the UK

Yes, it is wise to plan ahead, but you can also opt for an eSIM even 24 hours before your trip if you have an eSIM-compatible phone. The best part about eSIMs like Airalo and Holafly is that the plans won’t activate until you connect within the plan’s designated country. This means you won’t be on the clock until your trip finally starts.

We believe Airalo offers the best prepaid eSIMs in the UK and around the world in 2024, with options that are 5G compatible, starting from 1GB for 7 days at $5 up to 20GB for 30 days at $36.

Your questions answered

How do i activate go roam.

Go Roam works automatically when you arrive in a Go Roam destination, as long as data roaming is switched on in your device's settings and you have a compatible device with the latest software downloaded. If you’re a Pay As You Go customer, you’ll need to have activated your SIM and made a chargeable event - such as making a call, sending a text or getting online - in the UK first.

When you arrive in your roaming destination, you’ll receive a text confirming the roaming charges costs in that country. To check out the standard international roaming charges for the country you’re visiting, click the ‘Roaming Charges’ link and choose your destination.

Don't forget that when you're calling or texting back to the UK, you'll need to replace the first 0 in the number you're calling or texting with +44.

What are our roaming fair use policies?

Our fair use policies differ depending on whether you are roaming in a Go Roam in Europe or Go Roam Around the World destination and may be updated from time to time.

Go Roam is intended for our UK customers, who are UK residents visiting one of the destinations for short periods, like holidays or business trips.

More information is available on our  Support Page .

What if I’m travelling to a non-Go Roam destination?

If you’re traveling to a non-Go Roam destination, you will not be able to use your available allowances; you’ll be charged the standard roaming rates which vary depending on destination. Visit our  Roaming Abroad page  to find out more.

Inadvertent roaming

Inadvertent roaming is when your device connects to a network in a different destination from that which you're currently in. This can happen if you live or travel near to an international border, or on a coastline where you may connect to maritime services. Connecting to another network could mean you potentially pay higher roaming charges.

To avoid this, you can turn off data roaming on your device and look out for any notification messages that we send you. You can check roaming costs on our  Roaming abroad  page.

Inadvertent roaming in Northern Ireland

If you live close to the Northern Irish border, you may sometimes roam onto a Republic of Ireland network without meaning to.

To ensure there are no accidental charges applied to your monthly bill in this circumstance, we've excluded the Republic of Ireland from our monthly fair use limit of 12GB, which usually applies when roaming in our Go Roam in Europe destinations. This means you'll be able to use your data without fear of inadvertently crossing the 12GB limit.

There are no fair use limits for making calls or sending texts whilst roaming in a Go Roam in Europe destination, and the Republic of Ireland is also excluded from the daily roaming charge.

Can I buy multiple Go Roam passes at one time?

Yes. You can buy multiple Go Roam passes at once – perfect if you’re going to be away for a while. And they’ll be used in the order you bought them.

Can I buy a Go Roam in Europe pass and a Go Roam Around the World pass at the same time?

Yes, you can buy both types of Go Roam pass at the same time. This is ideal for travelling between Go Roam in Europe and Go Roam Around the World destinations. If you’ve bought both types of Go Roam pass, the first one to be used will depend on your location. For example, if you use your UK allowances in a Go Roam in Europe destination, your Go Roam in Europe pass will be used first.

* Free day(s) roaming based on price equivalent of saving with relevant multi-day Go Roam pass vs standard price of Daily Roaming charge. Fair use policy of 12GB per month applies.
