Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars. 

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site. 

Booking.com

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable. 

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile. 

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for: 

• Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
• Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices 
• Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer 
• Destination travel guides and articles 

Lacking or not the best for:

• Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

Expedia offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do. 

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals. 

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan. 

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points. 

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal. 

• Hotel, flight, and car bundles 
• Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary

• Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Tripadvisor.

TripAdvisor offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and things to do.

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community. 

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination. 

• Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals) 
• Comparing deals across aggregators 
• Strong user-generated review community 
• Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages 

Book a trip with TripAdvisor  

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.  

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price. 

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs. 

• Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
• Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Book a trip with CheapOair

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on. 

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights. 

• Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page. 
• Travelers on a budget
• Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Book a trip with Hotwire

Travelocity.

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same. 

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page. 

• All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle 
•  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Travelocity

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.  

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options. 

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel. 

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day. 

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

• Having a more focused cruise search process 
• Travel inspiration or destination guides
• Low risk takers who like to know exactly what they're getting

The BEST travel planner apps summarized (2021)

If your trip planning process still consists of opening up a million tabs on your browser and documenting everything in Google Sheets or Google Docs – there’s an easier way!

Yes, there are tons of travel planner apps for planning your trips and building itineraries out there, but there are almost as many different types of travelers. We recognize that different apps work better for different planning styles. To help you navigate this crush of apps, we went out and tested all of the top-rated iOS and Android trip planning apps that help you build itineraries and discovered which ones work best for each type of traveler.

We did the work so you don’t have to!

Our approach to finding the best trip planners for each type of traveler included:

• Looking at the top 30 apps that show up for “trip planner” in both the iOS and Android app stores
• Downloading the ones that appeared to have an itinerary builder feature and a user rating of over 4 stars (i.e., removed niche apps focused on flights, lodging, etc.)
• Testing out each app by creating our own itineraries
• Documenting strengths & weaknesses of each app and grouped ones most similar to each other
• Verifying our findings with app store reviews from other users

Who would we be if we didn’t believe in our own app? Wanderlog is the best place to build, organize, and map your itinerary with friends and family. 

• Don’t know where to start? Sort through hundreds of guides from the web or curated by other Wanderlog users and add places you like to your plan. Also share your plan with friends to collaborate!
• Still in the brainstorm phase? Create different categories (e.g., restaurants, museums) and as you add places, the app pulls up key context info like photos, a brief description, and ratings (from Tripadvisor, Yelp, Google, and more).
• Ready to plan by day? Organize ideas into itineraries, complete with scheduled activities and estimated transportation time between places. 
• Ready to travel? Export your places to Google Maps and get going!

You can see the map along with your plans on both the website and the app, so you can easily reorganize places to minimize travel time and maximize fun! Sections are color coded so you can quickly see which places are tied to which sections on the map. Best part is that it syncs in real-time making it easy to collaborate with others… and unlike Roadtrippers and TripIt (mentioned later), it’s completely free!

If you’re looking for a pre-made template to fill in, this may not be the app for you. Instead, it is an incredibly flexible and comprehensive planner. You can make itineraries down to the hour, or just use it as a long list of places to visit, making it great for international excursions and domestic road trips. Get creative and start planning!

We chose Wanderlog over:

• Funliday – can ‘discover’ places and collaborate with others on itineraries, but it only provides guides written by Funliday or other users and the search feature was slow 
• Pebblar – it also uses a map for planning, but it costs $10 per itinerary or $10 / month for unlimited itineraries
• Tripn – a simple easy-to-use itinerary builder that views everything on a map (Apple Maps), but lacks: guides for inspiration, routing capabilities, collaboration abilities, and ability to use on Android or desktop (iOS only)
• Mapify – while it also helps with discovering attractions and making an itinerary, you can’t see your itinerary on a map to see how it all ties together.
• TripHugger – more geared like a social network; great for group trip planning, including a chat feature, but you can’t use it to navigate or export your places and it’s not available on desktop

For the planner who lives off reviews: Tripadvisor

There’s no doubt that Tripadvisor is one of the top sources for reading travelers’ reviews. But, did you know that you can also use it to plan trips? As you go through different guides and lists, you can save places and tag them to a specific trip. When you’re ready to organize your activities, you can sort all the saved places into different days. You can even book activities directly from the platform. One of the most convenient features is that you can save items offline, so you can reference them regardless of your internet connection abroad. 

While Tripadvisor is great for ideas and saving favorite places, its map is tougher to use. For instance, you can see all the places saved on a map, but you can’t distinguish which places are tied to which days – everything is displayed at once. You also can’t use it to navigate from one place to another – there’s no map routing or ability to export places to other mapping apps.

We chose Tripadvisor over:

• TripScout – while it has interesting and curated content, its planning capabilities are narrow (e.g., if you want to plan by day, you have to specify dates) and the app is only available on iOS (no desktop access & sorry Android users!)
• Culture Trip – another great resource for guides and booking experiences (e.g., tours, etc.), but while you can bookmark restaurants or things to do, you can’t build an itinerary or reorder activities at all
• Guides by Lonely Planet – excellent resource for curated guides all around the world with handy features like visualizing everything on a map and accessing info offline, but access will cost you $5 / month or $40 / year, and you are still limited to just bookmarking places instead of building out full itineraries

For the no frills planner: TripIt

Chances are, if you’ve googled ‘trip planner,’ you’ve come across TripIt. It’s a no frills trip planner that organizes flights, car details, and reservations. You’ll need to have a good idea of what you want to do before using the app. If you’re looking for inspiration and a fun user experience, this is the wrong place. It doesn’t look up places or pull up information for you. But if you know where you want to be and when, you can organize all of your logistics in one place.

If you need to stay up-to-date on any travel changes, there’s also TripIt Pro for ~$50 / year, which gives you alerts and notifications during your travels, which is especially helpful for air travel.

Note: Recently, the website performance has been slow and the app has been crashing. However, TripIt does have tens of millions of users for a reason, so even with the recent bugs, which will hopefully be fixed soon, we had to include it in this list! Wanderlog (mentioned above) also lets you store your hotel and flight reservations, so if you’re not looking to use some of TripIt’s more advanced features, it could save you juggling an extra app.

We chose TripIt over:

• Tripsy – although we like this UI better and it’s easier to pull up places, it still doesn’t display any context info and it’s only available on iOS (no desktop access & sorry Android users!); has lots of potential though!
• CheckMyTrip – while still very useful for organizing activities and getting flight alerts, there’s no accompanying map view, making it difficult to visualize and navigate on your trip

For the road trip planner who needs breaks: Roadtrippers

Road trips are on the rise, especially in the United States, as we figure out how to safely navigate these COVID times. If you have to get somewhere and anticipate a long trip ahead, Roadtrippers will help you route and find relevant points of interest along the way. 

It’s easy to use – type in where you’re coming from and going, and indicate what you’re looking for in between (attractions, gas, food, etc.). Roadtrippers will recommend different places that fit your bill and you can add stops along the way. The catch? If you want to add more than 5 stops in between, you’ll have to pay $30 / year. If you’re heavy into saving places, you may want to still stick to Google Maps or Wanderlog (mentioned above).

Don’t need to go anywhere but looking for a fun weekend drive? You can also use Roadtrippers to look at guides and ideas for nearby road trip routes.

We chose Roadtrippers over:

• inRoute Route Planner – more complicated user interface and no desktop version; has features that are best for drivers in non-traditional vehicles (e.g., motorcycles), like weather alerts and elevation info; also $30 / year to create routes with more than 5 waypoints in between a route
• Road Trip Planner & Road Trip Planner Viewer – while the functionality seems to be there, it has 2 different apps (need to pay $4.99 for Road Trip Planner and then can view plans on the Viewer); it’s only available on iOS and mapping is solely based on Apple Maps (not Google Maps)
• Fotospot Road Trip – great for finding cool photo-worthy spots nearby or along your route, but doesn’t have any itinerary building capabilities

What else didn’t make the list

• Rome2rio : Great for providing transportation options between places and activity recommendations, but doesn’t have features to build and save an itinerary
• Trip Plans : You can’t use this to build your own plans – it’s just an app to view plans created by your travel agent
• Welcome – AI itineraries : We love the idea of automating suggested itineraries for those who don’t want to plan, but we tested it out for a few cities we were familiar with and didn’t agree with the itineraries provided – maybe it just needs some more time to finetune its recommendations!

The Perfect 7-Day Japan Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Japan captured my heart from the moment I firs visited. The delicious food, the rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant history, and the very friendly and polite people – it all blew my mind.

But Japan often feels impenetrable, especially to first-time visitors. While I think Japan deserves a minimum of 10 days, I get that some people might only have a week, so I wanted to write this, my ideal seven-day itinerary for Japan for a first-time visitor.

With only a week, there’s not much you can see unless you really rush it. And I don’t think you should do that.

So this itinerary only focuses on Tokyo and Kyoto (the most popular destinations) as well as some day trips from each. If you wanted to rush things a little, you could add in Osaka (more on that at the end).

(Note: If you purchased a Japan Rail Pass , activate it on arrival. That way, you can take advantage of the free JR trains throughout the city.)

Tsukiji and Toyosu Fish Markets Cure your jet lag with some food! In 2018, Tokyo’s main fish market moved to Toyosu. It is now twice the size of Tsukiji (the old one), making it the largest such market in the world. Here you can eat fresh sushi for breakfast, just a few feet from where it was hauled in from the sea, while marveling at the chaotic atmosphere.

You can still head to the old market in Tsukiji to eat, shop, and wander as well. I like it a lot, because there are more food options! Food and drink tours of the Tsukiji Outer Market are available for around 15,000 JPY.

Toyosu Fish Market is open Monday-Saturday 5am-5pm, though most shops don’t open until 7am. Admission is free, but you have to pick up a visitor’s pass when you enter. Tsukiji Fish Market’s hours vary by shop (usually 5am-2pm). Admission is free.

teamLab Planets This digital art installation is a multi-sensory and immersive experience in which you become part of the artwork, walking barefoot through the four exhibition spaces and gardens as you interact with the installations’ elements in unique ways. It’s really fun! TeamLab is generally sells out in advance, so I recommend getting your tickets online ahead of time .

Take a walking tour Walking tours are a great way to get the lay of the land while connecting with a local guide. I always go on one or two when I arrive somewhere. Tokyo Localized offers many free tours, including a classic overview and ones of both the famed Harajuku and Shinjuku neighborhoods. Its Imperial Palace tour would be the most convenient one after teamLab.

The Imperial Palace Formerly Edo Castle, the Imperial Palace was built in the 15th century, and some of the walls and moats from that time are still in use to this day. When the emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1869, he took Edo for his new palace and renamed it. While you can’t go inside, it is surrounded by beautiful grounds, a moat, and a park worth wandering through. You can also see the changing-of-the-guard ceremony (though it’s relatively low-key and unassuming). Admission to the grounds is free.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden This park is over 144 acres and home to some 20,000 trees. Most of the original park was destroyed in World War II but was rebuilt and reopened in 1949. During spring, it is one of the best places to see cherry blossoms. My favorite area is the landscape garden, which has several ponds with bridges and islands. It’s a peaceful oasis away from the urban hustle and bustle.

Depending on how you feel relative to your jetlag, you could fit a few more activities before you end your day. Check out this post for suggestions .

• Senso-ji – This is Tokyo’s most popular and famous temple. Beautifully painted, it sits in a scenic spot near a pagoda and the lovely Kaminari Gate. There’s a huge statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, inside the main hall. It’s very busy during the day, so maybe check out the grounds in the evening.
• Asakusa Shrine – This nearby Shinto shrine is much more peaceful, with fewer visitors, but with people praying, meditating, or performing traditional rituals. It was built during the Edo period (1603–1868) and survived the air raids of World War II.

Afterward, head to Ueno Park . Spanning over 133 acres, Ueno Park was established in 1873 on land formerly owned by a 17th-century Buddhist temple. It gets super busy in cherry blossom season, as there are over a thousand trees here. Throughout, you’ll find various stalls and vendors selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. On weekends, there are usually cultural events or festivals showcasing traditional arts, music, and dance. Four of Tokyo’s main museums are here:

• Tokyo National Museum – Established in 1872 on the north end, this massive building is the oldest and largest art museum in Japan. It houses one of the world’s largest collections of art and artifacts from Asia, particularly Japan.
• Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum – This museum showcases rotating exhibitions of contemporary and traditional Japanese art.
• National Museum of Nature and Science – This museum features a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions covering natural science and history.
• Tosho-gu Shrine – This beautiful 17th-century Shinto shrine has carved gold doors and other ornate carvings. It’s worth seeing up close!

Afterward, walk down to Akihabara to explore the video game parlors, arcades, and anime shops. This very buzzy area is ground zero for all things electronic, and it’s fun to play many of the games. This is where you’ll find the famous maid cafés, where servers dress up as maids and serve you food and drinks. These range from big touristy ones to holes-in-the-wall (the girls on the street are promoting the latter, which are a lot more culturally fun). They aren’t cheap, though, as you have to buy drink packages and pay a fee, but they’re kitschy and fun.

In the evening, visit Shinjuku and then drink in Golden Gai . In Shinjuku, you’ll find a plethora of cool bars, bright lights, and tiny hole-in-the-wall eateries. Be sure to wander down Memory Lane (aka Piss Alley) for tiny izakaya joints and bars. Afterward, head over to Golden Gai, a warren of narrow alleyways with a bit of a red-light-district feel, flanked by diminutive backstreet bars. It’s quite touristy but also a lot of fun. I’ve had some wild nights here!

With Arigato Tours , you’ll learn about the neighborhood while stopping to sample Japanese classics like sushi, yakitori, and ramen. The 23,900 JPY cost includes a drink and dishes at four stops.  

Kamakura Here you can see a 13-meter (43-foot) bronze statue of Buddha that was built in 1252. It was initially constructed within Kotoku-in Temple, but that has since been washed away by several storms, so it now sits in the open air. Admission to enter the temple grounds is 300 JPY, while it’s 20 JPY to go inside the statue. The journey there — around an hour — is free with a Japan Rail Pass .

Tokyo Disneyland I’m a sucker for Disney. You’ll find many of the same classic rides from Disney World here, like Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, and everyone’s favorite teacup ride, The Mad Tea Party. But there are several unique attractions as well, like Pooh’s Hunny Hunt and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Ticket prices vary depending on the day and time, but full-day admission begins at 7,900 JPY for adults and 4,400-6,200 JPY for children. It’s best to book in advance .

Mount Fuji Mount Fuji is located an hour outside of Tokyo. An active stratovolcano (which last erupted in 1708) and covered in snow for almost half of the year, it stands an impressive 3,776 meters (12,389 feet) and provides one of the most iconic views in the country. One of the Three Holy Mountains of Japan, Mount Fuji is both a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a UNESCO Cultural Site. In the summer, the mountain is open to hikers, who take 5-12 hours to reach the summit (traditionally, they depart at night to arrive at the top for the sunrise).

If you don’t want to hike, you can simply visit on a day trip. There are buses that can take you partway up, where you’ll be offered sweeping vistas of the surrounding area. Guided day tours from the city cost around 12,000 JPY.  

Wander the Bamboo Forest For a relaxing break, head to Arashiyama and let the dense and towering stands of bamboo envelop you. Located near the famous Tenryu-ji temple, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. It’s not that big, but there are some hidden areas to explore. Just make sure to arrive early if you want to enjoy it without the crowds (it fills up fast after sunrise).

While there, I would also recommend visiting the Okochi Sanso Garden, which (along with the home) belonged to the famous Japanese actor Denjir? ?k?chi (1898–1962). It’s not free (it’s 1,000 JPY), but it’s really nice and has some wonderful views.

Visit the Golden Pavilion Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for the shogun (military governor), this iconic structure was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The present-day edifice dates only to the 1950s, however, when a monk attempting to kill himself burned the historic original to the ground. The rebuilt temple is covered in brilliant gold leaf, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. Each of the three stories exhibits a different architectural style. Completing the scene are the serene reflecting pool and traditional Japanese gardens that contain lush foliage, manicured trees, and scenic walking paths.

Admire Ryoan-ji Temple This is my favorite temple in Kyoto. Originally established in 1450 as a residence for a high-ranking samurai, it was soon converted into a Zen temple and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a mausoleum that houses the remains of seven emperors. Its traditional rock and sand garden is considered one of the best in the country. There’s also a teahouse where you can experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony ( chanoyu ) as you overlook the Kyoyochi reflecting pool.

There are other temples in the area to check out as well:

• Daitoku-ji Temple – This massive complex dating back to 1315 covers almost 60 acres. It contains several dozen temples and is a good place to see a variety of Zen gardens and architectural styles. It’s also deeply linked to the Japanese tea ceremony, as several of the country’s most noteworthy masters studied here.
• Toji Temple – This is home to Japan’s tallest pagoda (five stories high). Founded in 796, just after Kyoto became the capital, it was one of only three Buddhist temples allowed in the city.

Go on a sake brewery tour Kyoto has a sake (rice wine) brewing tradition going back 400 years and is known for some of the best in the world, due to using the area’s pure natural spring water in the brewing process. Arigato Tours offers an excellent three-hour tour of Fushimi (the brewing district) for 23,320 JPY, including stops at several breweries, a guided tour of the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, and tastings.  

See the Fushimi Inari Shrine This mountainside Shinto shrine, dating back to 711, is dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and prosperity. It’s known for its thousands of vibrant orange torii gates that form a network of trails leading up Mount Inari. You can hike the trails on your own while enjoying panoramic views of Kyoto below or join a guided hiking tour , on which you’ll get off the paved paths and into hidden bamboo groves. Get here as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

Walk around Higashiyama Spend an afternoon walking along the narrow streets of one of the oldest and best preserved districts on your own or on a walking tour . The traditional machiya buildings (traditional wooden townhouses) are filled with small shops selling local specialties and handicrafts, as well as restaurants and teahouses. It’s a popular area in which to participate in a tea ceremony . Another nice place to stroll in this neighborhood is the Philosopher’s Path, which follows a cherry-tree-lined canal that’s beautiful and meditative even when the blossoms aren’t in season.

Visit Kiyomizu-dera One of a number of UNESCO sites in ancient Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera (meaning “pure water temple”) is located in the foothills of Mount Otowa in the eastern part of the city. It’s one of the most famous temples in all of Japan. It was established in 778, but most of the existing buildings date to the 17th century. There’s not a single nail used in the construction, which becomes all the more impressive once you see how large the temple is, which is best known for its wooden terrace that juts out over the hillside. The temple’s name comes from the nearby waterfall whose waters (from which you can still drink today) are said to have wish-granting and healing powers.

Explore Shorin-ji Temple This small temple dates back to the 16th century. What makes it worth visiting is its meditation classes. You’ll get to tour the temple and then be instructed in zazen , the Japanese style of meditation. It’s a very unique experience and something that I think will add a lot of depth and nuance to your visit (especially if you’ve seen a lot of temples). Just make sure to dress comfortably.

Wander the Nishiki Market Nishiki Ichiba is now one of the biggest indoor markets in town. Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen” and spanning over five blocks, it is full of vendors selling traditional dishes from the region, classic Kyoto souvenirs, and really just about anything else. There are over a hundred stalls here, many of which have been in the same family for generations. Opening hours depend on the shop but are typically from 9am to 6pm.

To dive deeper into Japanese food culture, you can take a food tour of the market . It’s the best way to learn about all the food you’ll see, as well as the market’s history.

Explore Gion Gion, the historic geisha district, is renowned as being one of the most iconic and atmospheric areas of town. It’s known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, and preservation of geisha (known locally as geiko) culture. Lining the main street are ochayas (teahouses where geishas entertain), small shops, and many restaurants, ranging from upscale kaiseki restaurants serving traditional Kyoto cuisine to casual eateries.

To really learn more about this amazing party of town and its past, take a walking tour of Gion . You’ll learn a ton and get a lot of context. They cost around 1,800 JPY.

At night, go to the Pontocho Row , a narrow street lined with restaurants, hole-in-the-wall bars, and jazz clubs. It’s one of the more lively areas in Kyoto.  

Nara was the capital of Japan in the eighth century, so there are lots of buildings and temples here that are upwards of a thousand years old (which is rare in Japan, due to the prevalence of fires and earthquakes, as well as World War II). Some things to do:

• Frolic with deer – The real draw in Nara are the deer. Since the 17th century, those in and around the city have been considered sacred. You can buy crackers to feed them or just watch them stroll around carefree.
• See the Buddha – Don’t miss a visit to Todai-ji, the world’s largest wooden building, home to a 16-meter (52-foot) Buddha statue. It was built in 738 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Take a walking tour – This guided half-day walking tour for 11,500 JPY includes all of Nara’s highlights as well as a traditional lunch.

Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan’s most famous sumo wrestling arena, hosts tournaments three times each year, in January, May, and September. Tickets sell out quickly, so book online in advance. Prices vary but start around 3,200 JPY for arena seats. You can book a ticket online here (you’ll be accompanied by a guide too, so you can learn more about the tradition as it unfolds before your eyes).

So, if you want to add another city to this itinerary you can follow this breakdown:

• Days 1 & 2: Tokyo
• Days 3 & 4: Kyoto
• Day 5: Nara
• Days 6 & 7: Osaka

Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara are all covered above. As for Osaka, some of my favorite things to see and do:

Take a food tour Known as “the Kitchen of Japan,” Osaka boasts a diverse culinary scene. Mouthwatering sushi and sashimi, Kobe beef and Japanese BBQ, and flavorful ramen can all be found here in abundance. Plus, there are local specialties like okonomiyaki (a savory pancake with egg and vegetables) and kushikatsu (kebab skewers). You can take a food tour for around 13,000 JPY, a ramen and gyoza cooking class for 9,500 JPY, or just wander and eat.

Osaka Castle One of the most famous landmarks in the country, the castle was originally built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and played a pivotal role in the unification of Japan during the Sengoku period (1467-1615). Over the centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to wars, fires, and natural disasters. The current version dates to 1931. The castle is situated amid sprawling grounds and surrounded by a moat. It’s also home to a small but insightful museum and an observation deck that offers some picturesque urban views.

Dotonbori This is arguably Osaka’s most iconic district, known for its vibrant nightlife (bars, clubs, theaters, and music venues), colorful signage, and delicious food. It’s best seen at night due to the plethora of huge neon lights and signs lining both the canal and streets, which have become symbols of Osaka’s nightlife. A guided walking tour that includes Dotonbori as well adjacent neighborhoods is 6,500 JPY.

Shitennoji Temple This temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, founded in 593. The architecture is a blend of traditional Japanese and East Asian styles, featuring impressive pagodas, gates, and shrines set amid serene gardens. Stroll through the tranquil grounds, admire the beautiful architecture, and learn about the temple’s historical and cultural significance at the museum. The temple is 300 JPY to enter, the garden is 300 JPY, and the museum is 500 JPY.  

Japan is one of my favorite countries. While it’s relatively small, it offers an amazing array of things to see and do (as well as some of the best food in the world). With seven days, you can easily see a good number of the main highlights and get a taste for the incredible history and culture. It will be a busy week, but this itinerary ensures you’ll still have some time to slow down, relax, and take in the local pace of life.

Just make sure you get a Japan Rail Pass before you go. While it’s not as cheap as it used to be, it will likely save you time and money!

According to the online travel agency Expedia, travelers in 2024 will check into rentals with  pickleball courts , voyage to places where their  favorite TV series are set , and visit “destination dupes” — vacation spots that duplicate the features of well-traveled attractions but draw fewer crowds and offer more savings.

Although the notion of alternatives isn’t new, dupe mania is rooted in recent  overtourism . “People have been flocking to popular destinations in record numbers, which is driving an uptick in travelers who are seeking less crowded and  less obvious alternatives  to these popular vacation spots that still offer all the charm,” says Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations.

Nearly 60 percent of travelers surveyed by the market research firm Future Partners agreed with the finding that dupes will grow.

“Even more than the  lower price , a dupe holds out the promise of a great experience,” says Arnie Weissmann, the editor in chief of  Travel Weekly , a travel business publication. “Chief among the risks that can ruin a trip are your fellow travelers — other travelers are competitors for the same resources you’re looking for, from an upgraded room to a good table at a fine restaurant.”

Consider the following five destination dupes to help you make the most of spring break.

Popular pick: Florida

Dupe destination: riviera nayarit, mexico.

From Pensacola to the Keys, Florida is a perennial spring break beach destination. Sun and sand lovers will find an alternative in Riviera Nayarit, the Pacific coast stretch of Mexico’s state of Nayarit just north of well-known  Puerto Vallarta . The beach town of Sayulita offers the bohemian appeal of Key West — easy to navigate on foot and full of fishing charters and small hotels — with the beachcombing access of the Florida Panhandle and surfing akin to New Smyrna Beach. It’s more expensive to stay at a beachfront resort such as Amor Boutique Hotel compared with a town option such as El Pueblito Sayulita, but both are walking distance to the water where waves are gentle enough for beginners to take a swimming lesson. Travelers renting a car can explore even quieter beaches in the nearby towns of San Francisco (a.k.a. San Pancho) and Lo de Marcos.

Dupe destination: miches, dominican republic.

If you’re looking for the long strands associated with South Padre Island, consider Miches on the northeast coast of the  Dominican Republic . About 90 minutes from the Punta Cana airport, the developing town of Miches offers more than 30 miles of beach, including Playa Esmeralda, a palm-fringed strand lapped by inviting turquoise waters. Birders looking to swap coastal Texas  birding sites  will find many different water birds and migrating land birds at nearby Limón Lagoon. Adventure travelers and photographers can take excursions to plunging waterfalls, including Salto de la Jalda and the mountain viewpoint Montaña Redonda. All-inclusive resorts are springing up along the coast, but there are more budget-friendly options closer around town, including condo rentals, homes and eco-friendly glamping-style dome tents.

Dupe destination: sandpoint, idaho.

Ski towns are popular with spring breakers looking for fun in the snow. Travelers who want a  mountain destination and great savings  should turn their attention to the northern Rockies where Sandpoint, situated on Lake Pend Oreille, offers a charming downtown and access to Schweitzer, the largest ski area in Idaho and Washington. The region has plenty of winter hiking and cross-country ski trails, as well as old-fashioned sleigh rides at the Western Pleasure Guest Ranch. Bargain lodging options range from the Outdoors Inn, a classic motel updated with woodsy decor, to cabin rentals from Twin Cedars. Similar to other great ski towns, Sandpoint has cozy coffee houses such as Monarch Mountain Coffee, craft beers and burgers at Matchwood Brewing Co. and films and concerts at the 1927-vintage Panida Theater — all within walking distance of each other.

Popular pick: Palm Springs, California

Dupe destination: truth or consequences, new mexico.

If a desert climate, hot springs and distinctive architecture suggest visiting tony  Palm Springs  in Southern California, look for similar appeal in Truth or Consequences in southern New Mexico. Originally named Hot Springs, the town renamed itself after a popular television game show in 1950. But the hot springs remain, generated by a 50 million-year-old rift along the Rio Grande, surfacing mineralized water ranging from 98 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak in history at Hoosier Hot Springs, founded in 1937, bathe riverside at Riverbend Hot Springs or overnight at Fire Water Lodge to have your own in-room geothermal mineral hot tub. Instead of mid-century modern architecture, downtown offers Southwestern adobe buildings housing cafés and galleries, and visitors can take day trips to surrounding 19th-century ghost towns.

Dupe destination: memphis, tennessee.

On the Cumberland River, Nashville embodies the glamour of  country music .  Memphis , about 212 miles west, trades country swagger for soulful blues on the mighty Mississippi River, where downtown’s new Tom Lee Park reinvents the waterfront with walkways and sunset-viewing decks. Musically, Memphis’ story starts on nearby  Beale Street , a magnet for blues musicians since the 19th century, now home to live music venues including B.B. King’s Blues Club. Rent a hotel room at Caption by Hyatt Beale Street Memphis to be close to the music. Tour the original home of Stax Records, re-created at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and groove to its legendary artists, including Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. Memphis, of course, draws music pilgrims to Elvis Presley’s former estate Graceland, neighbor to the concert venue Graceland Soundstage.

The cooking class normally includes shopping with the chef at the local market where he/she would explain you how to choose the best ingredients for your dish.

After your sourced the products, the fun part starts: experimenting in the kitchen-playground. A good news: you don't need to clean after your cooking class :-P

I took a culinary class in Thailand and it was an amazing experience. I learned to cook a Thai Blue Rice with Butterfly Pea Flowers and a Gang Massaman Curry in a traditional charcoal stove and a clay pot.

I was learning to cook this in a company of other travelers, so I've got not only new cooking skills, but also I have met new friends.

11 | Become a Diving Instructor

Move to the Philippines or Thailand and become a diving instructor! Does that sound good? With a Divemaster certification, you can work as a diving teacher anywhere in the world.

It takes 5 courses to become an instructor and it requires from you some investment.

The Open Water course would cost you around $300, the Advanced Open Water course and the Rescue Diver course are around $250-$300 each, the Divemaster course is even more expensive and costs $600-$700, and the last but not least, the Instructor Development course is about $1000.

Once you become an instructor, you will be paid based on the commissions from the course price and it will depend on the number of students you would have. Basically, it is a sufficient amount to live in the South East Asia. 

It can be a dream job if sea and fishes are your biggest passion, and if you accept having a huge amount of responsibility for others.

12 | Become an Animator at the Resorts

Instead of going for a one week vacation to a beautiful resort in a warm country, you can just go and live there. Resorts from all over the planet are looking for the international team with diverse language skills.

As a member of the animation team, you would have to encourage hotel guests to participate and enjoy sports activities and evening events.

In addition, you have to organize all these events such as pool games, beach games, water polo, aerobics, aqua gym, darts and maybe even to create a program for the kid's club.

If you are a sociable and an outgoing person, think of taking a chance to have your job combined with long vacation at the resorts. However, keep in mind, that it is not just sun, beach and fun.

13 | Organize Free Walking Tours

Live in a foreign country you love and know about and share this love and knowledge with travelers! It is an amazing way to live in a country for a longer period and to become a part of the local community.

To organize a free walking tour, you don't need a permit to work in the foreign country because you would not charge a fee for your services, but you will only receive tips from the group (if they liked your tour, of course). Free walking tours got a great recognition around the world, especially in the European countries.

If there is no a free walking tour in the city of your interest, you can start your own tour! It is now so easy as never before.

When I was traveling in Georgia, I went on a free walking tour in Tbilisi. The guide was from Ukraine, but she knew so much about Tbilisi, she was so passionate about the city and the country, that her tour was a great success.

That’s she who gets the most of positive feedback on Facebook and Trip Advisor from the participants. Remember, there are no obstacles! The only obstacles you have are those you create yourself.

Overall Opinion: Hands down, one of the best productivity improvements in my travel life! Having to assemble and manage itineraries from hundreds of airlines, hotels, travel aggregators, and car rental companies is a nightmare. As someone who is on the road 1/2 of their time, being able to book on any one of these sites, and have their component of my travel plans show up in an organized, itinerary on my phone is invaluable. I have no idea what the poor reviews here are talking about. I can only assume they have never used the app!

Pros: Near instantaneous parsing of itineraries from hundreds of airlines, hotels, travel aggregators, and car rental companies Convenient, editable itinerary in the app itself, or on the website

Cons: None. Seriously.

Overall Opinion: This app/Web-based software is fraught with bugs. I am required to regarly uninstall/install the android version. The interface between the app and the browser are superficially similar, but there are many differences. But, beware. This app is very buggy. I have found that a simple process that should take a matter of seconds can result in hours of work.I dread using the software because it is just so flakey. Save your money and look for an alternative. This thing is a nightmare. I am looking for a viable, reliable alternative.

Overall Opinion: I have Concur for work, and have used this extensively for global travel. Now it will not accept submission from my base email account...only gmail & outlook, so I'll find an alternative as that is my main email account, and has been for 20 years.

Overall Opinion: TripIt provides a unique service to travelers by creating an itinerary for all of the major parts of your trip without you having to do much work. The app does a good job of analyzing travel emails for the relevant information to add it to your itinerary. If something is added incorrectly, you can easily go back and edit it. TripIt also helps you navigate from one place to another by adding directions for events that are back to back on the schedule. While it is convenient that TripIt includes street maps, airport terminal maps, and other maps, the maps feature could use some improvement. First, the maps tool does not automatically use your travel details to find the location on the map. Also, you cannot search the local maps on the app for activities or other locations. Instead, you have to visit the TripIt website for this feature. Another downside of signing up for the TripIt app is you get an email every time an item is added to your itinerary. Also, any of your friends on social media with a TripIt account can view some of the details of your itinerary. Both of these problems can be fixed with a simple change in your settings on the TripIt website, however. The Pro version of the TripIt provides some additional features, such as a Seat Tracker to find you the best seat on an airplane. All in all, the uniqueness of the service provided by TripIt makes it worth a try when planning your next trip.

NEW YORK – A plush octopus by Jellycat. A neck pillow by XpresSpa. Graphic sleeping masks by Geyoga.

The accessories weren't designer. But these cozy, low-budget pieces stood out Sunday at the second Debt Gala, where some 200 pajama-clad revelers dressed for its “Sleeping Baddies” theme raised over $15,000 for medical bill relief. Hosted in Brooklyn one night before the Met Gala , the populist benefit's thrifty getups and raunchy comedy routines marked a far cry from its glitzy, star-studded inspiration that collects millions of dollars annually for the renowned art museum's costume department .

It's one of several alternative galas that have recently emerged around the city with hopes to democratize the exclusive springtime fundraiser's spectacle and leverage its fanfare to highlight other causes. Brooklyn Public Library revived its People's Ball in 2022 as an inclusive declaration of fashion's existence among “the everyday New Yorker.”

"Why should this wonderful, fun display of creativity and showmanship just be reserved for these wealthy elite when there’s so many amazing, creative New Yorkers who deserve to get the red-carpet treatment?” said Debt Gala co-founder Molly Gaebe.

This year’s beneficiaries are the Debt Collective, a debtors’ union born from the Occupy Wall Street movement, and Dollar For, a non-profit that reports having eliminated almost $50 million in medical debt by ensuring lower-income patients get discounted health services.

The prevalence of health care debt has prompted billions of dollars in relief from governments and private donors. A 2022 Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that four in 10 adults have some form of medical- and dental-related debts — with even greater numbers among Black and Hispanic adults, the uninsured and women.

Debt Gala tickets ranged from $35-$1,000. Attendees were encouraged to wear red squares — a nod to debtors' status “in the red” and a symbol of solidarity. Handbags by Steve Madden composed almost all the items up for grabs at a silent auction.

Jared Walker, the founder of Dollar For, said the fundraiser aligned better with his nonprofit’s mission than more elaborate, black-tie events.

The Washington-based organization connects financially strapped families facing overwhelming medical expenses with legal teams who help them obtain charity care. Walker said every dollar raised will eliminate over $25 of medical debt.

“I don’t want to do the old-school, golf tournament-type charity event,” Walker said.

Organizers had pitched the event as a night for those “that may never be able to buy a house” and a “red carpet for the people.” Dinosaur slippers and pink curlers contrasted with the Louboutins and bedazzled tiaras of past Met Galas. One attendee dressed in moccasins and a plaid, wearable blanket exclaimed that they'd been “wearing this all yesterday!”

The accessory of the evening might have been the sleeping eye mask. Winston Koone and Anuraag Baxi wore black ones that read “Shut Up” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Koone paired that with a $30 ring bought at a corner store. Baxi finally got the chance to break out a robe set purchased for a long flight.

“We’re here with things we found in our closets, dressing up not to mock — because I will definitely be watching tomorrow — but to show that... there is a different side to the world that maybe tomorrow doesn’t focus on,” Koone said.

The anti-capitalist sentiment and attention to New York's greater cultural scene continued through a series of sometimes crude standup comedy sets and lively drag queen performances. Comedian Tina Friml joked that she wore a plain outfit because she sleeps in street clothes — before later confessing that she actually falls asleep naked.

Many artists lack good health insurance, comedian Chanel Ali told The Associated Press, making the cause especially relevant to the creative community. Ali said she has peers who “will not let you call an ambulance no matter what” because “they don't want to get stuck with the bill.”

The concept came to the organizers several years ago at a wine bar in Manhattan's Theater District after watching Met Gala coverage. The pun came first: Debt Gala. But they soon decided that the vastness of medical debt and opportunity to exponentially increase the impact of the money collected made it an equally good cause to support, according to director and Debt Gala co-founder Tom Costello.

Debtors at Sunday evening's gala emphasized the need to fight health care inequalities baked into the system of medical debt. Philip Bjerknes, a longtime Brooklyn resident, said he incurred around $50,000 in hospital bills during a one-month institutionalization against his will after a suicide attempt.

Wearing a Brooks Brothers night gown from eBay, Bjerknes said medical debt can be very embarrassing and that he was “completely destabilized” by his experience.

“At the end of the day, the material support is what we need,” Bjerknes said. "To get to that with fun and fashion is awesome."

Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, has reiterated that the government "wants to establish the facts" before naming the "malign actor" involved in a Ministry of Defence data breach.

Sky News understands that China was involved in the hack, which targeted a third-party payroll system.

Ms Coutinho said: "We've made sure we've isolated the network, and a security investigation is happening at the moment and support is being provided to any of the personnel who were affected to make sure that they can get their payments on time.

"Grant (Shapps) yesterday talked about a malign actor, but that's because we want to establish the facts firstly."

But does this make the UK look weak?

The minister thinks not.

"You would expect government ministers to want to establish facts, particularly when it comes to matters of national security and I would say in the last couple of weeks alone, we have set out an increase to our defence spending," she said.

"And in that document we talked about the fact that countries like China are now acting in a co-ordinated and sometimes hostile way.

"We have taken a very robust position on this overall."

Two thirds of NHS trusts have missed their target to treat patients within 18 weeks since the last general election, Labour has claimed.

According to the party's analysis of House of Commons Library figures, 114 trusts out of 167 have failed to meet the target in any month since December 2019.

Trusts are meant to ensure that 92% of patients are treated within 18 weeks of GP referral.

Most trusts also did not hit their A&E target, which is that 95% of patients should wait less than four hours, according to the Opposition party.

Labour said only 10 trusts reached the goal in any one month in the last five years, when the national COVID lockdown in 2020 - during which emergency rooms were relatively empty - is excluded from the data.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said: "On Rishi Sunak's watch, record numbers of patients are left waiting for hours on end in A&E when delays can cost lives.

"Under the Conservatives, people can no longer trust the NHS to be there for them when they need it.

"When Labour was last in government, patients were treated in good time, and the maximum waiting time was cut from 18 months to 18 weeks".

In response, a Conservative Party spokesman said: "Despite record demand this winter, four-hour A&E performance improved compared to March last year.

"Despite the impact of the COVID pandemic, we're also making progress in reducing the overall NHS waiting list, which has fallen by almost 200,000 over the past five months."

 A "nationwide issue" with e-gates at airports has been resolved after causing travel chaos across the country, the Home Office has said.

It said the system was back up and running and there was "no indication of malicious cyber activity".

Social media images and footage showed long queues at the passport scanning gates at several airports overnight.

Passengers also reported being held on planes after they landed, while others said the delays caused them to miss trains.

Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports were affected, as well as Manchester, Bristol and Southampton, along with Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Pubs will be able to extend their opening hours to 1am if England or Scotland make it to the Euro-2024 semi finals this summer.

Venues will be allowed to stay open for an extra two hours on match days if either or both teams reach the last four or the final, the government said.

Most pubs shut by 11pm, but under Section 172 of the Licensing Act 2003 ministers can make an order relaxing licensing hours to mark occasions of "exceptional national significance".

Home Secretary James Cleverly said that the move will "allow friends, families and communities to come together for longer to watch their nation hopefully bring it home".

The easement covers venues in England and Wales, with Scotland and Northern Ireland in charge of their own licensing rules.

It comes after a consultation at the end of last year and is hoped to provide a boost to the hospitality industry, which has been hit hard by soaring energy prices and the cost of living crisis.

The semi-finals are currently scheduled to take place on Tuesday 9 July and Wednesday 10 July, with the final taking place on Sunday 14 July.

Former Tory immigration minister Robert Jenrick has called for the Home Office to be split in two as part of a 30-point plan to curb migration.

Mr Jenrick, who is seen as a potential Conservative leadership contender, has been ramping up pressure on Rishi Sunak over the issue after quitting his government post last year.

In a report he co-authored for the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS), a centre-right thinktank, the MP for Newark said the government must "undo the disastrous post-Brexit liberalisations" that have "betrayed" the public's wish for lower immigration.

He proposed a number of policies that should be implemented ahead of the looming general election, including breaking up the Home Office to create a department more focused on border control.

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.
