Tadej Pogacar's bold attacks key to becoming 'greatest ever' - Adam Blythe hits back at 'ridiculous' criticism

Ben Snowball

Published 07/05/2024 at 13:26 GMT

Is Tadej Pogacar blowing too much energy in his bid to entertain at the Giro d'Italia? "Let's not be ridiculous," says Eurosport expert Adam Blythe, who delighted in the Slovenian's latest unexpected move on Stage 3. Pogacar, who is bidding for the first Giro-Tour de France double since Marco Pantani in 1998, made a cheeky move off the front on Monday's sprint stage, ultimately won by Tim Merlier.

'I've won what?!' Nine of the weirdest podium prizes in cycling

Win a bike race and you might not get any old trophy for your mantle. From showers to tridents, we take a look at some of the weirdest prizes awarded to cyclists on the winner's podium

Steve Cummings on the podium for the salmon jersey at the Arctic Tour of Norway 2019 (Arctic Tour of Norway/Twitter)

Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) came agonisingly close to taking the first stage of the Arctic Race, attacking late on only to be caught by Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) in the final few hundred metres after the Dutchman opened up a lengthy sprint.

All was not lost, though, as Cummings picked up a potentially even better prize than the stage win and overall lead. A giant toy salmon.

The salmon jersey is what the race calls the King of the Mountains jersey, and what's more, the overall winner of the classification takes home 500kg of prime Norwegian salmon.

Last year, Norway's own Sindre Lunke (Riwal Readynez) took home the prize, supposedly to the delight of his family, with previous winner including Bernie Eisel (Dimension Data) who will have had a harder time shipping it back to Austria.

Norway is, of course, the world's leading producer of Atlantic salmon and the second largest seafood exporter in the world, so it's likely they have a few fish to spare.

Some professionals will say they’re in it for the glory; others will say it’s just about earning a crust and putting food on the table. But what every bike rider really dreams of is picking up an unusual prize for winning a race, like a wheel of cheese, or a donkey or even a huge sword.

Here are some of our other favourite weird cycling podium prizes.

Obi Toppin: A brief history of his signature dunk

May 7— Obi Toppin has performed his signature between-the-legs dunk many times over the last six seasons — but never on a bigger stage in an important game than the one he had Monday.

Toppin, the former Dayton Flyers star now in his fourth season in the NBA, brought out the dunk in the final minute of the third quarter against his former team, the New York Knicks , in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The dunk gave the Indiana Pacers an 84-77 lead but they lost 121-117 at Madison Square Garden. Toppin scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 19 minutes.

Fans couldn't believe Toppin had the courage to do the dunk at such a key point in a big game.

"Still laughing about that Obi Toppin dunk," one person wrote on X (Twitter). "The audacity to do that! In a playoff game! In the Garden! Against his former team!"

"That Obi Toppin dunk was legitimately jaw dropping," another person wrote. "Guy just casually went between the legs in a playoff game and finished it clean."

Even Toppin's best friend and former Dayton teammate Jalen Crutcher couldn't believe it.

"Not in the playoffs," he wrote on Instagram.

The between-the-legs dunk is often called the "East Bay." Isaiah Rider won the Slam Dunk Contest in 1994 with such a dunk and called it the "East Bay Funk Dunk."

Here's a brief history of Toppin's East Bay dunks:

—Toppin first showed fans the between-the-legs dunk in his first season on the court as a redshirt freshman with Dayton. He did it on Dec. 29, 2018, in a 94-90 victory against Georgia Southern at UD Arena. A Dayton Daily News video of the dunk received more than 400,000 views in the next 24 hours.

Toppin scored 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting in that game. He said then it was "for sure" his greatest dunk, but he might not attempt such a dunk again in a close game after coach Anthony Grant talked to him. Dayton led by 11 after the dunk, but Georgia Southern trimmed the deficit to one point twice in the final three minutes.

"He said make sure the next time you look at the clock and see the situation we were in," Toppin said. "I didn't even know it was a close game. He just said be mindful of the score and the time."

—Toppin pulled out the dunk again in his last college game on March 7, 2020. It came during a sequence of three dunks in an 82-second span late in a game against George Washington at UD Arena. It was the second-to-last dunk of a school-record 190 career dunks over two seasons.

—Toppin brought the dunk back for his first appearance in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest as a rookie in 2021 but finished second. He won the contest in his second attempt in 2022.

—Toppin showed off the Eastbay in Knicks' Christmas Day game in 2021.

—If one of Toppin's East Bay dunks stands out over the others, it's the one that came in a preseason game in 2022. In his third season with the Knicks, Toppin took the ball between his legs while in the air on a fast break and dunked at Madison Square Garden in a 131-114 exhibition victory against the Pacers.

"I've seen a lot of great dunks," teammate Immanuel Quickley told reporters, "but that was ridiculous."

The dunk was a bit different than Toppin's previous between-the-legs dunks because there was a defender, T.J. McConnell , in the vicinity. McConnell swiped at the ball as Toppin jumped in the air.

Toppin said he didn't see McConnell until he was in the air.

"I'm like, sheesh, 'I hope you don't hit this ball,'" Toppin told reporters. "I was able to make it and that's all that matters. If I do it, I've got to make it. There's no missing."

—Toppin has only missed the dunk once in a game. In February, again at Madison Square Garden, Toppin tried the dunk against his former team, the Knicks, but clanged it against the side of the rim.

"Should be broadcast far and wide": Praise for close pass advert encouraging drivers to "leave space for a life" when overtaking cyclists; Is Pidcock's Sa Calobra time unbeatable?; Deer Miss off the Day; Giro sprint stage + more on the live blog

Here's a bit more on the Cycling Scotland advert that we mentioned earlier, created with support from Police Scotland and attracting praise from Active Travel Commissioner Chris Boardman.

Today we launch our road safety campaign, supported by @PoliceScotland , to remind people driving they always need to drive safely around someone on a bike. Give at least 1.5 metres of space when passing someone on a bike. #GiveCycleSpace pic.twitter.com/ngGDFgW6C7 — Cycling Scotland (@CyclingScotland) April 29, 2024

And while some suggested Police Scotland might be better off implementing a reporting portal so cyclists can report video footage of dangerous incidents (à la Near Miss of the Day 903 ) the actual advert itself has earned plaudits.

Boardman commented: "These adverts are very good and actually make people think. Be great if other home nations followed their lead."

One reply to Boardman added: "I've been an advocate of adverts like these for years. We need to humanise the bicycle. There isn't even anyone riding the one on the road sign for a bicycle. I've been ridiculed for making this point but I can't see how drivers attitudes will changes until we are seen as people."

Another called it a "first-class advert" that "should be broadcast far and wide by terrestrial television in the UK".

Cycling Scotland have also followed up the video advert with shorter social media clips.

When you're driving, look out for people on bikes. More people are cycling, so be extra aware. Leave space for a life. #GiveCycleSpace pic.twitter.com/ZjM3ygG1kf — Cycling Scotland (@CyclingScotland) May 6, 2024

The lack of camera footage reporting portal in Scotland has come up as a major issue, with some saying this is more important to them and cyclist safety than expressing support for adverts.

One rider told Cycling Scotland: "The best thing that Police Scotland could do is implement an online reporting portal and mass processing team like every other police force in the UK already has. The kind of driver that doesn't give a damn about close passing a cyclist won't change their behaviour because of a few tweets. A brown envelope on their door mat and a few years of high insurance premiums on the other hand..."

Others attempted to add some comedic flourishes to the discussion...

It was all about the powerhouses on stage four, Filippo Ganna trying his luck up the final lump a few kilometres from the finish only to be caught in the high-speed run to the line. Lidl-Trek had done plenty of work all day, their Kittelesque sprinter Jonathan Milan unleashing all his power in the final 200m to take an impressive victory.

🥵 A very fast final KM on the seaside in Andora, with the sprinters chasing a lone rider for the second day running. 🔥 But once again, the sprinters prevailed, with an uber-powerful sprint by @MilanJonathan ⏪ The @Continentaltire Ultimo Kilometro ⤵️ pic.twitter.com/TLZoo5YdH6 — Giro d'Italia (@giroditalia) May 7, 2024

There was a Milan-San Remo feel to the day, some climbing early on followed by a flat(ish) run along the scenic coastline, a full effort climb, descent, sprint, done. Just up the coast from the roads of San Remo, the action exploded into life on the Capo Mele, Ganna making it over the top in the lead, holding his advantage on the descent before being reeled in as the line neared.

Once the sprinters got the green light it was all about Milan, the Italian who won the points classification and a stage last year, powering to victory despite the efforts of Kaden Groves, Phil Bauhaus and Olav Kooij.

The stacked field of sprinters might beg to differ, but the visual impression of that Milan win, and the strength of his Lidl-Trek support, makes it hard to believe he won't be back on the podium for a stage victory (or more) over the next few weeks. And boy is his all-out, watt-smashing, bike-wrenching style fun to watch...

Amid new SRAM groupset talk from the Giro... this has got some people all sorts of excited... (mainly because of the bottle opener)...

Desperate news for Biniam Girmay and Intermarché - Wanty, the Eritrean sprinter (who would have fancied his chances today given the near 2,000m of climbing in the first half of the route to fatigue the pure sprinters' legs) has abandoned the Giro after a double crash on the big descent back down to the coast.

The first involved numerous riders, Ben O'Connor and Matteo Trentin also affected, the second coming moments later as Girmay limped onwards after a few minutes at the roadside in obvious discomfort. Slick Italian roads, still damp, and Girmay appearing to gesture towards his tyres after the second fall having slipped out on a fast bend.

Closer to home, a mechanic raised the alarm about what he called a "criminal-level abdication of duty"  after a customer crashed on their first ride on a bike bought from the retailer on which it is claimed the stem bolts had not been tightened.

To which Chris Boardman commented: "Imagine if the whole country had the same transport choice as London. Seems like a pretty good investment to me."

Boardman also had praise for this Cycling Scotland advert, supported by Police Scotland, which have been released with the aim of "to remind people driving they always need to drive safely around someone on a bike" and give safe passing distances.

"These adverts are very good and actually make people think," Boardman added. "Be great if other home nations followed their lead."

So, how does one go about creating such enormous pieces? Speaking back in 2017, Hoyte said: "You need the concentration of roads to do the complicated ones so I look for different cities across the UK. I made a special trip to Cardiff to do the face but the other ones I managed to do in spare times on trips for work. I do quite a bit of research using route planners.

"It does take a ridiculous amount of preparation. I couldn't really put a time on it. I do it in my lunchbreaks on a rainy day, each one over a period of weeks but spending an hour here and an hour there."

Any thought that Tadej Pogačar might do as little as possible to win this Giro d'Italia in order to save some energy for the Tour de France double attempt disappeared this weekend, just as quickly as... well, the Slovenian when given half a chance to attack.

Second on stage one, stage-winning destruction on day two, attacking on stage three's sprint finish. Just a normal opening Grand Tour weekend for the sport's great entertainer. Surely he couldn't?

Geraint Thomas 2024 Giro Eurosport interview

Today  should  be another sprint, but like yesterday when Thomas and Pogačar leapt to follow Mikkel Frølich Honoré's attack, there's a small climb just a few kilometres from the line. Enough to tempt Tadej? Three times as much climbing as on yesterday's stage, most of that in the first half of the day. Jonathan Milan is the name on this live blog predictor's mind...

2024 Giro d'Italia stage four (RCS)

We'll get talking about the Giro in a bit but, as everyone knows, Strava KOMs are much more important. 2019 British national hill climb champ Ed Laverack is over in Mallorca and had another go at setting a PB up Sa Calobra because when in Rome... or more accurately when in a Balearic Island hotspot for the world's two-wheeled visitors...

Ed Laverack at Sa Calobra (Strava)

[Strava/Ed Laverack]

The backstory to all this is that Laverack smashed the KOM a couple of years back , the climb widely regarded as quite possibly Strava's most competitive segment due to its popularity with the pros and year-round visits from those aforementioned never-ending pelotons of visitors.

Then, during a winter training camp, a random cyclist by the name of Tom Pidcock (apparently he's quite good...) came along and obliterated the KOM by almost two minutes . And while nobody seems to know just how much Ineos Grenadiers drafting that mind-boggling 22:46 came with, it now seems pretty unbeatable (unless Tadej Pogačar gets bored with smashing the Giro apart and heads over for some rest day fun).

Laverack took 18 seconds off his previous best to solidify his place in second on the segment leaderboard, 1:32 behind Pidcock, but impressively ahead of Simon Yates and other notable current and former pros.

"Stunning day for it and the legs showed up," he told followers on Strava afterwards, with full behind the scenes YouTube video to follow this week. "388w (6.4wkg ish) and perfect pacing meant I made up all of my advantage in the final 6km, going 30s faster than my PR on that section alone! Maybe next time we will have some fun for YouTube and pace behind a team of climbers or a motorbike and see how fast we can really go!"

Re the Cycling Scotland, this has run before but it hasn't made any difference.

As for Polis Scotland, a chocolate teapot would be more useful. They are institutionally corrupt and not just anti-cycling.

Could road.cc do a review of the Telraam S2 "stick on my window" traffic counter that is under £200?

Looks like a useful tool for campaign groups.

https://telraam.net/en/S2

Possibly newsworthy for this site is so many readers are users: just received an email from Zwift saying that the monthly subscription will go from £12.99 up to £17.99 from June. 38%, quite a leap...

Avatar

Just got mine too, I have an annual subscription going from £129.99 to £179.99, renewing in January. I've got 7 months to decide whether to go back to monthly and pause it during the summer, suck it up, or try something else.

Realistically I'll suck it up I expect, it's a premium platform along with TR (I wonder how long the new upstarts will stay around). I guess it's the first price increase in many years so fair play to them for hanging on. It just feels like a lot because it was free when I started on it in 2015, then £8.99, followed by £12.99, now this.

I feel it might be time to cancel: that's just taking the micky of an increase.

Perhaps Road CC could do an updated: ""What instead of Zwift" article?

MyWhoosh is free and not bad, I did give it a try but I guess I'm a creature of habit and like Zwift for familiarity plus I didn't like the repressive regime connatations.

Just bear in mind mywhoosh is funded by a petrostate.

Its a huge jump especially considering what most people use it for. Will be interesting to see how much it effects their value as I'm sure plenty will cancel or at least cancel when they know its going to be less used. 38% though... nah. They will make a killing with the new pricing. Amazed they went for that though instead of 20% or something.

I agree I guess, it's only an extra quid a week, just a bit of a surprise to get such a big rise in one swoop.

Ill pause it till Autumn, see if a mass exodus leads them to change their minds.

Deer Near Miss.  Muntjac are a menace but they tend to be solitary and small.  During the nightime leg of the London Wales London Audax (a fab 400km event) I was landed on by a Fallow Deer (60kg plus) that had leapt a hedge to my left and about 6ft above head level.  Needless to say I was badly damaged, requiring ambulance, A&E, Trauma Ward and 10 weeks off work.  These things come in herds so if you see one follow the good practice in this clip.  Also, go out today and buy venison (the fact is if we ate more there would be a market for their meat and so, less of them about).

Like how very few cows there are. Only 6% of the combined mass of mammals on earth is wild. The rest is livestock.

Apparently one of the most deadly creatures in the UK (trailing a long way behind humans of course).

For those who couldn't be bothered the others are bees / wasps and dogs.

Following Samtheeagle's idea though, surely we should all be eating motor vehicles ?

Shouldn't that be 8 legs?

If anyone argues we should have cycle "registration" to help catch errant cyclists...

Ask them if registration has prevented/caught these vehicle users who have had expired MOTs and VED for months, if not years...

RV66 DKU, no MOT and VED for over 2 YEARS. L333 CTB and PO60 OLV.

All seen being driven/parked badly in the last 2 months.

Not forgetting the close pass I had a couple of years ago. The Met police issued an NIP only to find the plates were cloned. So despite wanting to go after the close pass AND then finding the driver was using cloned plates, the police gave up on it.

Cannon Hill Park today after members of the public found an emergency access gate open & took the opportunity to drive into, around, & park in the park itself. Police attended but couldn’t do anything due to their being “too many cars”

//pbs.twimg.com/media/GM6ppdcWEAAdVN-?format=jpg&name=small)

We went for a walk in the nearby woods yesterday to then dodge 2 off road motorbikers who had complete disregard for anyone. No numberplates either and one of them was under 16.

Couldn't they have just sent in a squadron of flatbed trucks to tow away the lot of them?

Just close the gate. Let them walk home and come back next time there is an emergency and the gate is open to retrieve their cars...

The Daily Mail and the usual Twitter cycling haters are trying to make out the cyclist got away with killing the elderly lady in Regents Park, and that legislation needs to change because of this (ie speed limits for bikes).

Furious riders rip MTA threat to make Five Boro Bike Tour pay for lost bridge tolls: ‘They’re out of their mind’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Furious Five Boro Bike Tour cyclists ripped the MTA on Sunday over its reported threat to charge the event for lost tolls from the Verrazzano Bridge.

“Between [a potential toll bill] and congestion pricing, I think they’re out of their mind,” Bob Sweeney, a 65-year-old retired firefighter from Queens, seethed of transit officials.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority last month infamously proposed charging the New York City Marathon hundreds of thousands of dollars for tolls lost to the bridge’s shutdown during the famed running race, creating such widespread outcry that Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered the agency to hit the brakes.

But bike-tour organizers — who were likewise reportedly threatened with a whopping bridge toll bill — say they never got the same promise of a future reprieve.

While this year, the bike tour was expected to shell out what it did last year to the MTA, neither the transit agency nor Hochul’s office would say Sunday whether Five Boro would be subject to a devastating massive toll bill in the future.

“That’s ridiculous,” Sweeney said of the situation. “This is a great event, a lot of people that live in the city take part. … They should probably lower the price to get more people to take part.”

Other riders said they fear a potential toll charge — which might boost the bike tour’s $139 entrance fee — could effectively kill participation in the ride, which draws around 32,000 people annually.

“That’s not cool,” said Glenna Hamilton, a 54-year-old office manager from Queens.

“I don’t think a lot of people would ride — it would deter me from riding,” she said of a cost increase. “Why pay so much for an event? You can just go to the park.”

Kenneth Podziba, the CEO of ride-organizer Bike New York, told The Post that he’s been fearful the MTA would hit the organization with a massive tab over the lost bridge tolls, estimated for the marathon to have been around $750,000.

“We’re a great event, we’re a charity, we do great things with our money,” Podziba said, adding he doesn’t believe the MTA actually loses cash because of the tour.

“They haven’t been able to provide us with any kind of proof of lost revenue,” he said.

“When the governor told the MTA to fix this mess, she was only referring to the marathon — she was silent about the Five Boro Bike Tour, as if we don’t exist,” Podziba said. “I wish the governor would come out and make a statement to fix this mess, as it refers to the bike tour as well.”

The governor’s office Sunday directed Post questions to the MTA — which did not provide any updates as to its plans, including about whether it will try to charge the tour for lost tolls in the coming years.

The MTA already has its hands full with another major controversy: congestion pricing, or the move to toll drivers in the heart of Manhattan an extra $15 toll starting next month.

“Bike New York will be reimbursing the MTA for overtime and certain other expenses at the same rate that it did in 2023, and we’ve collaborated with event organizers to reduce those expenses as much as possible,” spokesman Aaron Donovan only said in a statement, referring to Sunday’s event.

“We look forward to a successful event this weekend,” he added.

Bike New York paid roughly $90,000 to use the Verrazzano last year. That included overtime and other costs involved in shutting down the bridge’s lower deck.

The tour — which snakes 40 miles through the city — begins in Lower Manhattan and ends on Staten Island.

Riders told The Post that hitting all five boroughs — including by cycling across the city bridge — are part of what makes the event worth it.

They said that if the tour had to cut the Verrazzano out — or the cost went too high — they probably wouldn’t return.

“The [40] miles of open streets through all five boroughs, no cars, is what I came down here for,” said Abby Lore, a 29-year-old teacher from Washington, DC.

“If it was not as open and accessible, I probably wouldn’t do it,” she added. “The Verrazzano is a key part of this. I felt like it rounded out the whole route.”

Therese Holm, a healthcare worker from Manhattan who did the ride with her fiancée, said she’d think twice about registering if the price inflated, even though she loves riding down the FDR Drive in Manhattan.

“It gets to a point that I’m not going to pay that kind of money,” she said.

Jay Durdan, a 65-year-old retiree from Dash Point, Wash., said he was floored when he heard the city wanted to hike the rates.

“I don’t like it at all,” he said. “New York has its reputation, but when you have these diamond events, it’s one heck of a way to bring people out from around the world and around the United States.

“It’s good for the local economy. Figure out how to raise something in the budget [rather] than raise the rate for an event like this.”

Podziba said he’s hoping the tour next year doesn’t have to chop off its tail end, which would keep riders from heading over the Verrazzano into Staten Island, because of a lost-toll cost.

“We’d have to call it a Four Boro Bike Tour, and it wouldn’t be as interesting,” the organizer said.

“They’re trying to take the fun of this great, iconic New York City event. You can only ride on the Verrazzano one day out of the year, and that’s the first Sunday of May for the TD Five Borough Bike Tour, and that’s amazing.

“It would be too bad if we had to make it four boroughs.”

Tommy Richman

Tommy Richman has taken the internet by storm in the last few days after releasing his new song, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY.” Released Friday (Apr. 26), the record is already firing on all cylinders on streaming because of its funky sound and Richman’s seamless vocal riffs.

Last week, Richman first teased the track on TikTok using a VHS-style recording of him and his team grooving to the record. It has since earned 9.5 million views on the popular social media platform, and is quickly creeping into the conversation of possibly being a song of the summer contender.

With an undeniable bass and sticky hook about winning a girl over, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” could be foreshadowing Richman’s future success, as he sings: “You rep my city for so damn long/ But you still don’t notice me, my sound next/ VA next, I’m at they neck, I’m runnin’ up a check.”

Despite his small discography to this point, Richman is equipped to make noise. A shifty singer who can jump between alternative and R&B with the drop of a hat, Richman has a formidable team behind him — most notably Brent Faiyaz after the two joined forces last year through the singer’s creative agency, ISO Supremacy.

“In launching my new label ISO Supremacy and partnering with PULSE Records, we’ve created this platform to give artists like Tommy Richman a creative home with the ability to scale global impact and a team that is accessible who keeps creativity at the forefront. We’re going to continue to make history,” added Faiyaz.

Here are six things about the “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” singer Tommy Richman.

He's From Woodbridge, Virginia

Like his mentor Faiyaz, Richman hails from the DMV, most notably, Virginia. In an interview with the Miami New Times last year, Richman spoke on the difficulties of local artists from Virginia trying to break into the industry.

“There’s a lot of passion through the scene back home, and I feel like it’s because a lot of people don’t get a fair shake,” Richman told the  New Time s . “It’s really hard to have your voice heard there. That’s probably why a lot of people from Virginia left, like Pharrell and Timbaland. It’s kind of key for an artist to leave their nest. That way, you can appreciate where you come from.”

He Began Taking Music Seriously Before His Sophomore Year of College

In an interview with Lyrical Lemonade in 2022, Richman detailed his decision to pursue music before heading back to college. According to him, after receiving positive feedback from a song he made titled “Pleasantville,” he decided to go full-throttle and make it a career.

“ Going into my sophomore year, I made a song called ‘Pleasantville,’ and a lot of people liked it and I thought it could be something I could do,” he remembered. “Then I dropped ‘Melba,’ which was a breakup song about a girl, but it was really a breakup about leaving college. At that point I left college for music and started taking it seriously. I had to!”

His First EP, Paycheck , Dropped in 2022

Richman released his first EP, 2022’s Paycheck , which includes the project’s breakout song, “Star Girl.” Despite the bite-sized offering —the EP is four tracks — Richman displayed promise as a genre-bending artist with pop sensibilities who can flirt with rock as well, as proven on “Games.” Since then, Richman has released several other EPs,  ALLIGATOR , his ISO Supremacy debut,  THE RUSH and his recent two-pack SOULCRUSHER .

He Cites NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman as One of His Inspirations

While Richman has pointed to artists like Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, and Motley Crue as musical influences, he also seeks inspiration outside of music, especially from a certain NBA Hall of Famer: Dennis Rodman.

“He’s actually one of the most punk people ever,” Richman said to Lyrical Lemonade. “During his time, to be as metro, and athletic, and different, and fashionable and partying as hard as he did was ridiculous. I mean, he played on the best basketball team ever, was defensive player of the year, and was outside fucking Carmen Electra in Vegas every other night. I wanna interview Dennis Rodman one day. Say what you want, but the Kim Jong Un friendship is iconic!”

He's the First Artist Signed to Brent Faiyaz's ISO Supremacy

Last year,  Billboard   exclusively reported that PULSE Records partnered with Brent Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy and formed a joint venture with the R&B singer-songwriter. Richman was the first artist under Brent’s wing and even opened up on the singer’s F*ck the World, It’s a Wasteland Tour.

“I’m grateful and amazed at the support from Brent, ISO Supremacy, and the team at PULSE Records, which motivates me,” said Richman last year. “To have the opportunity to open for Brent on his sold-out tour is an absolute honor and to sign to PULSE Records, a creative community that really understands music and supports artists, I couldn’t ask for more.”

He Appeared on Faiyaz's 2023 album,  Larger Than Life

Shortly after signing to Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy and appearing on the singer’s tour, Richman collaborated with his DMV brethren on “Upset.” Nestled inside the latter part of Faiyaz’s album, the earworm became a favorite, giving fans a glimpse of the duo’s potential. In retrospect, the song sonically shares the same funky elements that make “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” a home run.

Vietnam motorbike tour – all travel tips for first-time travelers.

Before we start, let’s address the elephant in the room: Motorbiking in Vietnam, also referred to as motorcycling, is risky. And due to this, we can only recommend that experienced, fully kitted-out bikers attempt to ride here.

But, let’s also be realistic. Not everyone who wants to ride Vietnam has prior experience on a bike, and even fewer are dressed to the nines in the latest protective gear. The thing is, if you’re reading this, it’s probably safe to say that you’ve already set your heart on a motorcycle adventure.

To make your travels a little easier and give you an idea of what you’ll need for your trip, Indochina Motorbike Tour has just created a checklist to provide you with a practical, real-world run-down of everything to consider taking along and why.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

???? This checklist contains:

???? Clothing & Safety Gear

???? Bike Accessories

???? Personal Packing Travel Kits & Gadgets

???? Required Travel Documents

Table of Contents

1. Clothing & Safety Gear for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

Since motorbike accidents are much more common in Vietnam than in most other countries, it’s key to remember the importance of safety gear. Even after an accident, emergency services are likely to take time to reach you and may provide a low standard of care, so taking preventative measures beforehand can help ensure a painless vacation.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

1.1. Wear a full-face Helmet for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

The only safety item you’re legally obliged to wear in Vietnam is a helmet. Unfortunately, you’ll see many Vietnamese riders sporting skullcap-style efforts that provide all the protection of a cardboard box. Likewise, battered hand-me-downs regularly pass from traveler to traveler and will almost certainly let you down when you need them most.

Also, a helmet visor or sunglasses are useful for keeping rocks, dust, and bugs out of your eyes while driving. Make sure to find a real motorcycle shop and treat your brain to a proper helmet that is both comfortable and secure.

1.2. Motorcycle Gloves & Footwear Vietnam Motorbike Tours

In the event of a crash, your hands are probably your first point of contact with the ground. And while many people don’t wear gloves, they really can make all the difference if you’re in an accident. Even a minor spill at low speeds can rip your hands to shreds.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

Furthermore, if you’re typically seen rocking terrains, then, as an absolute minimum, switch them out for good trainers or ankle-high boots. Putting your foot out to steady yourself can be instinctive, but it will make quick work of your toes if they’re unprotected. Ditching the sandals will also help you to feel more confident on the bike, especially when whizzing past your feet at 50mph.

1.3. Jacket & Jeans for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

In most countries, jeans and a sturdy jacket would be considered the bare minimum when riding. Regardless of what most people do in Vietnam, they are both a good idea. A proper motorcycle jacket and pants are ideal, and the more serious (or sensible) riders do wear them here.

A cheaper alternative is to buy some knee and elbow pads to wear under your other gear. It’s not the real deal, but you’ll still be way ahead of the crowds.

1.4. Waterproofs & Layers for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

Regardless of the time of year, the weather in Vietnam is unpredictable, making waterproofs essential for any multi-day journey. Once your clothes are wet, your bike trip will quickly change from a fun adventure to a cold nuisance.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

If you’re already traveling, but don’t have waterproofs, pick up one of the ponchos favored by the Vietnamese locals. They look ridiculous, but in a downpour, who cares!? It can go straight back in the bag once the rain stops.

Temperatures vary greatly, depending on the time of year and area, so check out the weather for the region you plan to ride in. Packing layers will help with the 60mph wind chill and colder temperatures, especially when you hit the hills.

Additionally, there are two other items to consider packing: Merino socks and something to protect your eyes. Merino wool socks dry easily, are very breathable, and can be worn all day without stinking to high heaven.

1.5. Sunglasses or Goggles for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

You shouldn’t have to sacrifice clear vision for a sport you love. Wearing contacts or your everyday glasses or sunglasses on your bike can let in dust or wind, and if you choose non-prescription gear, you won’t be getting the most out of your time on the road. If you motorcycle frequently, there’s no question, you should definitely get prescription motorcycle sunglasses or goggles—and we’re here to help you narrow down the one that suits you best.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

You’ll need to decide whether you want glasses or goggles, and the best way to determine this is the type of helmet you have. A full-face helmet typically requires glasses, as goggles can be too bulky to fit properly beneath a face shield. If you have an open face helmet, goggles have much more coverage to shield your eyes from wind and stay firmly in place.

2. Bike Accessories for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

The better you equip your motorbike for your future life on the road, the easier your time exploring Vietnam will be.

2.1. Bungee Cords or Luggage Rack

Riding for hours while wearing a heavy backpack is exhausting, so consider investing in a luggage rack and bungee cords. You’ll have a more pleasant ride with your bag strapped to your bike instead of your back. Just make sure you take the time to figure out how to attach everything.

If it’s not securely fastened, it will cause you no end of grief. I’ve made this mistake before and spent the entire day nervously glancing around to make sure the bag wasn’t either gone or dangling dangerously into the back wheel.

2.2. Spares & Tools

Unless you know what you’re doing, you probably don’t want to be wrenching on your bike at the side of the road. But, in case you end up breaking down, having a couple of spares will provide a mechanic or passer-by the tools they need to assist you.

– Spare Inner Tube – Especially for the rear (more commonly punctured) tire

– Spark Plug – Ask a shop for an inner tube or a spark plug, there’s a chance they’ll give you whatever they happen to have in stock. Be sure the get the correct sizes for your machine.

– Zip Ties & Duct Tape

– Adjustable Wrench/Spanner

3. Personal Packing Travel Kits & Gadgets for Vietnam Motorbike Tours

These essentials will keep you connected and well prepared for almost anything the journey can throw at you.

– Cash – If you’re heading into the sticks, there probably won’t be an ATM nearby for emergencies. In the event of an accident with another motorist, you’ll likely need cash to compensate them on the spot or face police involvement.

– Head Torch – Worth its weight in gold if you get stuck anywhere at night.

– Local Sim Card – For $10, including data, it’s a cheap lifeline.

– Offline Maps– Incredibly helpful in areas with no phone signal. Maps.me is a personal favorite. Once you have the app, just download the map for your region while you’re still on data or WiFi. Then, wherever you are, you’ll never have to worry.

– Power Bank – Using maps all day will chew through your phone’s battery. A power bank will extend its life.

– Phone Mount – Stopping every few miles to check maps is a pain and just gets in the way of enjoying the ride. A phone mount smooths all of that out.

– Ziplock Bags – Even if you’re drowning in monsoon rain, ziplock bags will keep the essentials dry.

Vietnam Motorbike Tour - All Travel Tips For First-time Travelers

4.1. Licenses

You are legally required to have a valid motorbike license to ride in Vietnam. Unless you have a Vietnamese license, the only option is a motorbike license from your home country in addition to an International Driving Permit (IDP). As of 2014, IDPs are valid in Vietnam and must be issued by a country that has signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. If your country is not on the list, your IDP is not valid in Vietnam. You need to carry your original license and your IDP with you whenever you’re on the road. Like anywhere else, your license must be valid for the size of the motorbike that you’re riding. A license is not required for bikes smaller than 50cc, but you will have a miserable time trying to tour the country on this bike. These shopping trolleys are seriously underpowered, especially with a foreigner-sized rider and their luggage. The truth is that the vast majority of foreigners who ride in Vietnam do so illegally. And unless you have an accident, drive drunk, or drive exceptionally dangerously, the police are unlikely to pay much attention.

4.2. Tip for Handling Vietnamese Police:

If the police pull you over for no reason and you get the impression that they’re just looking for a bribe, don’t speak English. The extortion relies on confidence, which usually disappears when they realize they can’t communicate. Be very polite, very helpful, and very respectful, but don’t speak a word of English, and they will probably lose interest.

However, local police forces have occasionally had brief crackdowns on unlicensed foreigners, even constructing checkpoints and confiscating offender’s bikes. Online forums generally have the most up-to-the-minute information about the level of police enthusiasm in any given area.

If you do ride without a license, just be aware that if anything goes wrong, you will be entirely at the mercy of local law enforcement. They can haul you over the coals with fines, compensation payments, or even jail time if the incident is severe enough. Your embassy is not going to step in and save you!

4.3. Bike Insurance

Third-party vehicle insurance is required by law, but few people ever use their coverage. In practice, if two parties have an accident, they will typically negotiate any damages payments between themselves, and cash will be paid. The general rule is that it’s the foreigner’s fault.

If you’re renting a bike, then the rental shop should already have insurance on its bikes. Travelers who buy their own bikes rarely bother to arrange insurance, and in doing so, they are technically riding illegally. Nevertheless, most people prefer to rely on a pocket full of dollars and some negotiation skills. However, if you go with Indochina Motorbike Tours, our guide will manage dealing with the local authorities, police to make big things be small

4.4. Travel Insurance

Without valid medical insurance, hospital bills can mount up frighteningly fast, and if you can’t pay upfront, don’t expect the hospitals to take pity on you.

The thing is, some policies exclude motorbike touring. I checked an old document of mine and, sure enough, it excluded “touring where the motorbike is the main mode of transport”. When does a journey become a “tour”? Only your insurer knows. But it’s worth checking out your situation, and preferably, taking out a policy that explicitly permits motorbike trips.

In any case, without a license valid in your home country and an IDP valid in Vietnam, it’s unlikely that your travel insurance policy will cover you.

What the True Story of Buffalo Bill Reveals About the Myth of the Wild West

A portrait of William F. Cody, known as "Buffalo Bill"

B uffalo Bill is onstage engaged in fierce battle. He and his scouts are fighting a ferocious group of Cheyenne warriors. The audience holds its breath as the terrifying Cheyenne appear to be gaining the upper hand. But just when it seems all hope is lost, Buffalo Bill —dressed in an elegant black velvet, lace-trimmed, Mexican vaquero suit—takes aim at the Cheyenne war chief Yellow Hand and fires. Their chief shot dead, the Cheyenne are defeated. Buffalo Bill walks over to Yellow Hand’s lifeless body, takes out his knife, and removes Yellow Hand’s scalp. Buffalo Bill triumphantly raises the scalp in the air. “For Custer!” he declares. The audience erupts into wild applause and cheers. “For Custer!” they cry. In Buffalo Bill’s stage show The Red Right Hand or The First Scalp for Custer , the scalping of Yellow Hand was an act of justice.

The story of Buffalo Bill’s scalping of Yellow Hand would become a part of a mythology—a story that William F. Cody largely invented, just as he had invented his own legend and the “Wild West.”

Cody was given the name Buffalo Bill for his talent in slaughtering buffalo. At first, Cody hunted buffalo for food. Buffalo were plentiful around the country, and hunting them was a popular sport, but Cody was obscenely prolific in killing—claiming to have shot dead 4,280 buffalo in just 18 months. He got a job with the railroad companies to kill buffalo in order to feed railroad workers. But quickly, the work became about more than killing buffalo; it became a part of killing Indians.

As American colonizers looked to expand their territory westward with the building of railroads in the mid- to late 19th century, they came into direct conflict with the Native people who had lived on those lands for centuries. Prime railroad territory was often prime grazing territory, and valuable resources like gold were found in places where the Sioux hunted. The U.S. government had declared de facto total war against Native people wherever they stood between the United States and its expansion west. The United States attacked Native people in every way it could—fighting combatants on the battlefield, killing women and children in their homes, spreading disease, forcing relocation—nothing was off limits. But still, Native communities fought to maintain their lands, and fought well.

In 1869, facing a protracted battle with Native tribes like the Sioux, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Phillip Sheridan as commanding general of the army and asked him to help solve the “Indian Problem” once and for all. Sheridan reached out to William Tecumseh Sherman, who had distinguished himself with his scorched-earth battle tactics during the Civil War, for advice. Sherman observed that wherever buffalo existed, there would be Native people, and they would continue to fight for land wherever the buffalo roamed. Sherman’s advice to Sheridan was simple: remove the buffalo in order to remove the Indian.

Cody had gained a reputation as a skilled hunter, and he went to work for Sheridan, killing as many buffalo as he could. Men from all over the country boarded trains headed west in order to shoot buffalo with .50-caliber rifles from train windows. They killed thousands of buffalo a day, leaving the animals’ lifeless bodies where they fell on the plains to rot. Wealthy and powerful men from the East Coast and even Europe rode west to join in on the fun, guided by “Buffalo Bill” Cody.

As journalists traveled with the wealthy men to document the hunts for newspapers across the country, Cody saw his first real opportunity for fame. He began partnering with the authors of dime-store novels and started commissioning plays about his exploits. Soon, Cody was regularly traveling back and forth—east to star in stage shows, and then back west to continue the wholesale slaughter of buffalo .

As famous hunters like Cody popularized buffalo hunting and countless men joined in the killing, they found that they had to travel farther west in search of buffalo as numbers dwindled. The excitement following the widespread slaughter of buffalo began to wane. Cody, now having tasted celebrity, went in search of greater fame and found it in battle. An experienced scout with the U.S. Army, he signed on to join in the Plains Wars in 1876, announcing from the stage of one of his shows that he was leaving “play acting” in search of the “real thing.” He packed his costume and went off to war.

Opportunity struck a little over a month after Cody joined the 5th Cavalry in southern Wyoming. A small band of Cheyenne warriors had been spotted heading west in pursuit of two U.S. military couriers. Cody gained permission from his superiors to take a small group of fighters to engage the warriors. Before leaving, Cody changed out of the typical sturdy, rough clothing that the rest of the cavalry wore and into his costume. Dressed in black velvet pants and a red silk shirt trimmed with silver buttons, Cody rode out to meet fame and fortune. The fight itself was unextraordinary , lasting only a few minutes. But after Cody killed Cheyenne warrior Hay-o-wei, whose name means “Yellow Hair,” Cody scalped the dead warrior and took his warbonnet and weapons as trophies. According to Cody, he thrust the scalp in the air and shouted, “The first scalp for Custer!” Nobody else at the skirmish remembered him doing that. None of the warriors that the men fought had been at the battle of Little Big Horn, known as Custer’s Last Stand, or had likely ever encountered the revered General George Armstrong Custer. Within a week of his killing Yellow Hair, exaggerated stories of Cody’s bravery under fire began to reach the newspapers.

A few months after killing Yellow Hair, Cody left the cavalry to return to the stage. Each night, he donned the very outfit that he wore in battle to reenact a wildly dramatized version of the killing of Yellow Hair, now renamed by Cody as Yellow Hand and promoted to the position of chief, instead of simple warrior. While papers denounced the blatant glorification of violence, audiences packed the theater to see Cody wave the scalp of Yellow Hand in the air in victory.

Cody would go on to develop more stage productions showcasing the violent masculinity of the West to great success, leading to the 1883 debut of his most famous show, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World .

The timing of Cody’s Wild West was perfect. In the mid-19th century, white men in England and the United States began to worry about their young men who had it too easy; their wealth and comfort had made them soft. In the United States, a country still fighting to retain the land it had stolen from Native people, this softness could threaten the expansion of America across the continent. The call for white men of America to maintain physical power was not just political; it was a spiritual calling.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders Circus Poster

Cody’s Wild West show offered everything that white men in search of power and glory were looking for. In the show, white men were noble and brave. They fearlessly tamed animals and fought savages. “Indians,” even when Cody allowed them to be something less than mindless killing machines, were seen as great relics of the past, conquered by the superiority of white men. The lure of Western adventure did not dissipate as these boys became men. Instead, they set out to star in their own stories of physical dominance.

Cody expanded his show from a small stage to an extravaganza the size of a small town. He hired real Native warriors to play Native warriors. Gunslingers and cowboys would join the show. Eventually he would add “Zulu warriors,” Mexican “vaqueros,” Turks, and dozens of other “exotic” performances. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West became the most popular show in America, and he became one of the wealthiest and most famous entertainers in the world. Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, and many other dimestore-novel heroes would inspire an entire generation of young white men to head west in search of their own Manifest Destiny.

With the Wild West show gaining in popularity, Cody also strove to increase its respectability. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West was not a “show”—it was, according to Cody, an educational event. It was a living history. People would come to Wild West to learn as much as to be entertained. Few questioned the supposed educational value or legitimacy of his project. And the racist, exaggerated stories of white male American bravery, leadership, and righteous victory became a part of our collective understanding of American history; these misleading legends persist to this day.

After decades of success, Wild West was eventually done in by financial mismanagement, Cody’s drinking habits, and the rising popularity of movie theaters. Cody died on Jan.y 10, 1917, at age 70. He is still remembered as an icon of the American West: a soldier, a showman, a wildlife conservationist, and a friend of the Indian. He deliberately cultivated that reputation. As Cody interacted with the Native people who worked in his show, he became less comfortable with the scalping act that had launched his career. The scalp and warbonnet of Yellow Hair were removed from their stage-side case, never to be displayed again.

Cody would eventually speak against the scalping of Native people. He would also come to regret the massacre of buffalo that had given him his stage name. While the great buffalo hunt featuring live bison would always be a prominent part of Cody’s show, he began to speak out against the buffalo hunting that he had popularized. Perhaps one of the most brutal of white male privileges is the opportunity to live long enough to regret the carnage you have brought upon others.

The 6 Most Ridiculous Guitar Designs

Levon Ritter

In the world of music, there's always going to be innovation, creativity, and products of intense drug use masquerading as innovation and creativity. The following guitars are primarily examples of that last category.

6 The Gittler Guitar

ttrr

The Gittler Guitar looks like someone put strings on a skeletal robot penis to fulfill a prophecy. It's made of 6AL-4V aircraft grade Titanium, which gives the guitar incredible resistance to damage, should you be swinging it like a battle ax into crowds of ex-patriots while playing Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover." Each string also has its own pickup (most other guitars have one or two for the entire instrument), because nothing about this instrument makes one practical bit of sense. You can buy it right now for $3,995, or you can see it in action first in the music video for "Synchronicity II" by The Police, which is the greatest test drive in the history of time.

5 The Pikasso Guitar

TTLL

The logic problem that is the Pikasso Guitar was specially built for jazz fusion virtuoso Pat Metheny, who can play that stringed Escher painting better than the rest of us can do most things . It has four necks and 42 strings, the tension of which puts the instrument under about as much pressure as a deep sea diver. If you happen to break a string in the middle of a particularly heartfelt rendition of "Country Roads," we imagine the resulting explosion would send your arms and face rocketing into a different time zone.

4 Present Arms

ARGRURN FEEEE IREEEEEURI EBIRTHFLEEAT

It would be impossible to play this "guitar" without looking like a vaudeville comedy routine. It's actually an art project called "Present Arms," part of a series of installations by Japanese artist Yoshihiko Sato. He has gone on to make more Present Arms in different colors and a doughnut-shaped guitar called Glory Arms that can only be played if you are Dr. Octopus and/or a fielding baseball team with two designated hitters.

3 The Wangcaster

The 6 Most Ridiculous Guitar Designs

The Wangcaster takes some of the subtlety out of being a rock musician by allowing you to hammer out Motley Crue songs on a giant wooden cock. A pet project of a woodcarver named Doug Rowell, the Wangcaster apparently carries the personal endorsement of Jon Bon Jovi, who sagely declared, "Wow, that guitar has balls!" It sure does, Jon. It sure does. In addition, the Wangcaster will be in fierce competition with your Hellboy comics and your LEGO pirate ship for the space beneath your bed, reserved for things you hide when bringing home dates from the Macaroni Grill.

2 The Mermaid

The 6 Most Ridiculous Guitar Designs

The Mermaid is a wooden mermaid sculpture with a guitar sticking out of its abdomen that is impossible to play without looking like you are a desperately lonely sailor from the 18th century trying to impregnate his captain's figurehead . The guitar seems like an afterthought, as if the sculptor had experienced a brief moment of doubt that a plaintive naked mermaid wasn't the craziest thing he could build and tacked a musical instrument onto her belly to crush his apprehension. It doesn't help that she's making the same face as Han Solo while frozen in Carbonite. Unless, of course, mute terror masks are your thing, in which case you may be more interested in the next entry.

1 Teenar, the Teenage Girl Guitar

The 6 Most Ridiculous Guitar Designs

The Teenar is the unholy combination of guitar and teenage girl mannequin created by Lou Reimuller, who is pictured posing with his creation presumably seconds before getting tackled by police and interrogated about a crime simultaneously unrelated and completely related in every terrifyingly conceivable manner. There is no reason to ever play this guitar and doing so is likely illegal in most parts of the world.

10 Best Mobile Racing Games For Android And iOS (2024)

  • The mobile gaming market has seen significant growth, with racing games being a favorite genre due to the phone's form factor.
  • From Mario Kart Tour to Asphalt 9, there are plenty of high-quality racing games available for Android and iOS devices.
  • Each game offers a unique experience, from classic arcade gameplay in Hill Climb Racing 2 to realistic driving physics in Rebel Racing.

The market for mobile games has grown significantly over the years. From multiplayer first-person shooters to open-world RPGs, you can play games from every genre on your Android and iOS devices. However, if there's one genre that never fails to disappoint on mobile devices, it's racing.

10 Best Free Mobile Games You Can Play In 2024

Racing is one of the most popular genres of gaming on mobile. It's because the form factor of a phone lends itself well to simulating the inside of a car, or maybe it's because they're short and easy to play. There's a huge variety of games to choose from when looking for a good racing game , but a few of them stand above the rest.

Mario Kart Tour

The legendary mario characters on mobile.

  • Price: Free to play

A Mario Kart game you can play on your phone, Mario Kart Tour is the dream of phone users worldwide. It has the same old characters you love to play around with and some extras thrown in for good measure (Wii characters).

Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play game with no barrier to entry. However, it comes with its own host of issues, like multiplayer lag, bad bots, and ultra-simplistic controls that can be a major turn-off for many players. That being said, you probably won't run into any lag issues if you have a powerful device. Of course, the game could be better if the devs pay more attention to fixing the issues, but it's, nonetheless, a fun game that you can at least play on your mobile device.

Released September 25, 2019

Developer(s) Nintendo EPD

Traffic Rider

The bike game that never gets boring.

You can't mention racing and mobile in the same sentence without at least acknowledging Traffic Rider. A generation-defining game that is a bit past its prime but still incredibly fun to play, Traffic Rider brings the player to a crowded highway and gives them the freedom to do whatever they want. Do wheelies, cut off slow drivers, stay in your own lane, or drive on the wrong side of the road; the limit is your imagination and the game engine.

Though it is still a great game for bike enthusiasts, Traffic Rider doesn't quite stack up graphically compared to modern racing games. However, the arcade is fun to play through, the progression system is satisfying, and the variety of maps and bikes keep the game interesting.

Released December 23, 2015

Developer skgames

Hill Climb Racing 2

The racing sym that defies physics.

An old classic from a bygone era that still stands up to modern scrutiny, Hill Climb Racing 2 might have 'Racing' in the title, but be warned, it's as much a wacky puzzle game and ridiculous physics engine simulator as it is a racing sim.

The game is just pure fun in the same way that Goat Simulator is fun. The game focuses more on clearing levels than racing in the traditional sense, but it's something you should try if you're looking for something fresh in the driving genre.

Released November 27, 2016

Developer Fingersoft

Asphalt 9: Legends

The latest entry in asphalt series.

A classic in the racing genre , Asphalt 9 is the latest entry in the phone-melting, high-octane, ultra-graphics gaming space of the Asphalt franchise. It has everything you know and love from the previous games and makes them slightly better, at least graphically. It has a super chill, steer-only mode that lets you focus on the story and soundtrack, and it has a hands-on manual mode that lets you take full control and get the traditional experience.

Asphalt 9 is the kind of game you want to play if you have a top-of-the-line phone and want to get the most out of it. It also has a multiplayer mode that pairs you with people around the world to compete with each other. Also, you get to customize supercars, which is pretty cool.

Horizon Chase

Racing game with classic, retro visuals.

If you're a fan of old retro racing games with 16-bit graphics, you'll absolutely love Horizon Chase. It has all the charm of a retro game and none of the downsides that come along in the package. The game is definitely geared toward an older audience, but it's been modernized to appeal to all age groups.

The classic graphics have a timeless charm to them, and they're very reminiscent of the 16-bit era, albeit with more definition and clarity. The soundtrack is composed by the same person who made the soundtracks for the classic arcade games (Barry Leitch), and the gameplay is a blast from the past, being heavily inspired by the hits of the 80s and 90s.

Book Your Trip: Horse

Little house on the prairie.

most ridiculous tour rider

by Laura Ingalls Wilder

In the beginning of this Little House book, the Ingalls family travels over a frozen Mississippi River and through the woods of the Midwest to make its home on the Kansas prairie. But, being a pioneer story, it isn't a smooth journey. In Minnesota, the family is held up by mud from rains, and it takes the opportunity to trade its tired horses for a pair of mustangs. In Kansas, those same mustangs struggle to swim the family's covered wagon across a deep creek, and Pa has to dive in to guide them to the other side. More adventures await after the Ingalls settle on the Plains — from building a house to meeting the neighbors to fighting off fevers and dealing with Indians.

I remember that reading this book as a kid, I was struck by how tough 19th century life was. But now I'm more impressed by the story's grown-ups. For two parents leading their family into unknown territory, Ma and Pa's composure is awe-inspiring. Maybe that (and a pair of good mustangs) was the secret to making it as a pioneer. (For ages 8 to 12)

Lonesome Dove

most ridiculous tour rider

by Larry McMurtry

Ask 100 Texans any question, and you'll probably get 100 different answers — except when it comes to the unofficial state musician (Willie Nelson, of course) and the unofficial state book. Lonesome Dove isn't just an epic of the Lone Star State, though — it's one of the most purely American novels ever written. The story of a cattle drive in the 19th century West, McMurtry's magnum opus changed the way Americans looked at the Western novel. It's a heartbreaking novel with some unexpectedly funny moments, but more than anything, it's a beautiful and wrenching story about human frailty and sacrifice. There was never anything like it before it was published, and there probably never will be again.

On The Trail Of Genghis Khan

most ridiculous tour rider

by Tim Cope

I heard of Tim Cope's On the Trail of Genghis Khan because two people — unknown to each other and strangers to me — told me on the same day that I must read it; and so I did. It's a lovingly detailed account of Cope's long-distance trip from Mongolia to Hungary on horseback: three years and 6,000 pretty grueling miles. Misadventures abound. Not only were there the extremes of temperature that Cope encountered on his trip — the icy steppes of Mongolia and the blistering desert heat of Kazakhstan among them — but there was also that pesky fact that Cope was pretty unfamiliar with travel via horseback, not to mention the lurking danger of horse thieves. Weaving together the history of the places he goes with fascinating accounts of the people he meets gives this account both its charm and its lasting value.

The Mud Pony

most ridiculous tour rider

by Caron Lee Cohen

In this retelling of a Pawnee folktale, a poor boy desperately longs to have a pony like his fellow tribesmen. His parents, who live in the very smallest teepee of the tribe, cannot afford to give him one, so he builds one for himself out of clay, feeding and cleaning it as though it were real. When his tribe moves suddenly in pursuit of the buffalo they rely upon for food, the boy is accidentally left behind. Bereft, he cries himself to sleep and awakens to find that his beloved mud pony has come to life. She speaks to him with the voice of Mother Earth, telling him to climb upon her back and she will guide him to his people. Their further adventures, retold with grace by Caron Lee Cohen and lovingly illustrated by Shonto Begay, will intrigue and move readers. (For ages 4 to 8)

most ridiculous tour rider

by Jilly Cooper

There are the dirty books with innocuous covers — a woman's face with chiseled cheekbones and contoured eyes, a bouquet of blooming flowers — and then, there is Riders. The cover of this book is so cheeky (ha!), so ribald, so charmingly ridiculous, that you'll either bust this sucker out on your plane trip with pride or you'll hide it underneath your pashmina. Riders is Jilly Cooper's classic tale of international show jumping — and the mode of transport we're talking about is obviously horse, though they ain't the only things getting ridden, if you catch my drift. This massive book contains larger-than-life characters, sexy villains, beautiful starlets, wealth and scheming. There's a long list of characters, but the only ones you'll remember are the two show jumpers Jake Lovell (brooding schemer from lower classes) and deliciously awful Rupert Campbell-Black (gorgeous rich cad). If you don't care that Rupert is based on Camilla Parker Bowles' former husband, Andrew, well, I can't help you. The characters are snarky and wonderful, the horses sweaty and gorgeous, and the book races along like a show jumper at its best. It's so long, it can almost double as your beach cover-up. Its only flaw — at 900 pages it's almost impossible to flip to the naughty bits.

As I Lay Dying

most ridiculous tour rider

by William Faulkner

If you were assigned William Faulkner in high school, this is probably the one you read. For the downtrodden Bundren family of Yoknapatawpha County, Miss., transport options are limited. But when Addie, the family's matriarch, dies, she wants to be buried with "her people" in a town some 40 miles away. Her ineffectual husband, Anse, is determined to grant her wish, saying, "I promised my word me and the boys would get her there quick as mules could walk it, so she could rest quiet." Traveling by mule-drawn wagon across the countryside with your five children and your wife's coffin isn't as much fun as it sounds. What's in it for Anse? New teeth — the chance to satisfy a personal obligation and his own agenda. The journey is disastrous — the mules drown, the body begins to smell, a broken leg is treated with cement , and a state of permanent crisis descends. Told from the point of view of 15 characters, including the dead Addie, much of the book is written in stream-of-consciousness style. Faulkner forces you to be an exposition detective — he is not going to burden you with anything so mundane as scene-setting, or background. But as the story comes into greater relief, you can let the prose wash over you, landing in waves, as beautiful and ominous as the river itself.

All the Pretty Horses

most ridiculous tour rider

by Cormac McCarthy

What could be better than setting off into the night on horseback? In Cormac McCarthy's seminal Western, there's almost nothing more exhilarating or desirable. Every other sentence makes you stop and revel in McCarthy's ability. Winner of both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, the novel traces the journey of teenage cowboy John Grady Cole. After his mother sells their beloved family ranch, John Grady sees no reason to remain in Texas and heads — in the company of his friend Rawlins — toward the Mexican border in search of work. The young men cross paths with characters that both cause them to fall in love and threaten them with violence. Saddle up for one of McCarthy's most extraordinary and poetic works.

The Diamond Age

most ridiculous tour rider

by Neal Stephenson

There are many ways to get around in Stephenson's post-cyberpunk tale of child welfare and nanotechnology. Cars, boats, zeppelins, superpowered Rollerblades — all are possible. But the one that forever made me a fan of this fractured, two-way tale was the robotic horse ridden by one of the novel's two protagonists, disgraced neo-Victorian nanotech engineer John Percival Hackworth. The horse (called, classily, a "chevaline") serves as both a sly comment on the futuristic version of the Victorian gentleman that Hackworth plays at being (because what better ride for a man of quality than a fine steed?) and as nearly a character in its own right — taking Hackworth to places he could never have dreamed of going otherwise, and then waiting, loyally and eternally, for him to return from his adventures. And the best part? Because the horse knows where it's going even when Hackworth doesn't, it is graced with the best horse name ever: Kidnapper.

A Week to Be Wicked

most ridiculous tour rider

by Tessa Dare

Spinster Minerva Highwood is convinced that if she can just get to the Royal Geological Society's meeting in Scotland and introduce her amazing geological find, her miserable life will get better. So she persuades the most notorious rake in Spindle Cove to take her there, promising him the proceeds when she wins the 500-guinea prize for best presentation. Claustrophobic and broke, Colin Sandhurst knows a days-long carriage ride is a bad idea but somehow can't persuade himself to deny the aggravating bluestocking. If she's willing to ruin herself pursuing a boring scientific prize and give him a small fortune in the process, why stand in her way? Of course, a current of mutual but unacknowledged attraction as well as a string of zany, shared experiences might just bring these two together forever. Or, to put it another way, consider this a quirky Regency romance version of The Sure Thing .

Don Quixote

most ridiculous tour rider

by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

To call Don Quixote a book about horses is like calling Anna Karenina a book about trains, yet where would Don Quixote and Sancho Panza be without their trusty steeds? In this early 17th century picaresque tragicomedy, Cervantes' hapless heroes gallop from one misadventure to another — tilting at windmills, attacking imaginary enemies and wooing Dulcinea — on the backs of the errant knight's skinny horse, Rocinante, and his squat squire's beloved donkey, Dapple. Don Quixote is one of the most entertaining — if cartoonishly violent — books ever written. What begins as a farcical sendup of chivalric romance literature deepens in its second half into a metafictional, modern exploration of character and a philosophical morality tale about deception, madness and the power of literature — including its potentially delusional effects on susceptible minds. But oh, what a celebration of impossible dreams!

Celine Dion’s Sydney concert: The 8 most ridiculous, amazing moments

SHE was hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure — but it was the surprise inclusion of an Aussie classic that made Celine Dion’s Sydney show.

Nick Bond

‘He sat there with his middle finger up at me’

Footage of ‘catastrophic’ stage dive revealed

‘I will leave’: Star slams Aussie fans

‘I will leave’: Star slams Aussie fans

ICONIC covers, cheesy stand-up routines, screaming matches between fans — the second of Celine Dion’s sold-out shows at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena had it all.

In the spirit of the legendary ‘ Celine Dion Is Amazing’ viral video — a YouTube compilation that’s now been online for 10 long years, and which I may have watched every week for the past decade — I’ll present my review of last night’s concert in the form of a list. Here they are — the eight most ridiculous, amazing moments from the Celine Dion concert:

1. A support act only Celine could have: Veronic DiCaire, a French Canadian ‘human jukebox’ musical impressionist who perfectly impersonates every diva under the sun — and has the same goofy, cheesy sense of humour as Celine (seriously, they could be sisters). Cher, Pink, Britney, a very boozy, woozy Mariah — Veronic blasted through each one in rapid fire succession, her impersonations earning gasps and cheers each time. It takes a special performer to hand-pick this woman as your support act, secure in the knowledge you won’t be upstaged.

2. Celine emerging in the first of many amazing outfits for the night, looking like the world’s gayest matador in an immaculate all-gold suit as she prowled the stage singing her first Australian number one hit, The Power of Love. Instant standing ovation before she’d even sung a note.

She’d just come from the running of the bulls.

3. Her between-song banter, which at times ran for longer than the songs themselves: Make no mistake, Celine Dion is pure ham and cheese. A total goober. Referencing her three decades in the music industry, she mimed hobbling across the stage on a walking frame, clinging to the piano for support. Introducing a song written especially for her by P!nk, she scanned the arena’s rafters for the aerial acrobatics-obsessed singer.

“Calm down people, she’s not here tonight,” she announced with a mock sigh of relief. Celine is your tipsy aunty who insists on reading every single bad joke in the crackers at Christmas.

4. The INTENSE devotion she inspires in fans, starved of time with her after a decade away from our shores. One particularly fervent woman in the row behind me dealt with a couple chatting mid-song thusly: “This means EVERYTHING to me!!!” she screamed at them.

“DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!?!”

Chatty couple kept quiet after that.

5. Celine re-emerging in a big, froufy, ridiculous ball gown for the night’s biggest, froufiest, most ridiculous song: Her 1996 masterpiece, the Jim Steinman-penned mini-opera It’s All Coming Back To Me Now . You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Celine Dion sing live what are surely some of the most satisfying lyrics in popular music — words it’s impossible to deliver in anything but a scream: “THERE WERE NIGHTS OF ENDLESS PLEASURE! / IT WAS MORE THAN ANY LAWS ALLOWED! BABY. BABY. BA-BYYYYY….”

6. An extended comic monologue about flirting with actor Ryan Reynolds when he personally invited her to sing the theme song to Deadpool 2 that went on … and on. We struggled to understand the point of the story until Celine demonstrated her flirting technique — cameras tight on her face, she raised one eyebrow, then another, then both at the same time. Oh, maybe THAT was the point of the story: At 50, Celine Dion is definitely Botox-free (and she wants you to know it).

7 . Celine — truly, the biggest crowd pleaser there is — including in her set the most crowd pleasing song in Australian history: John Farnham’s You’re the Voice. Farnsey, we don’t mean to be rude, but don’t push yourself for that umpteenth farewell tour — Celine can more than handle it.

8. Her cover of Eric Carmen’s 1975 soft rock staple All By Myself — truly, her 1996 take is the DEFINITIVE version of the song. The lyrics about loneliness had always been delivered with a campy melodrama, but coming just minutes after Celine mentioned the 2016 death of her husband, René Angélil, they suddenly had a new-found poignancy. As she poured everything she had into the song’s feverish climax, it wasn’t a performance: it was raw emotion. And it was pure Celine.

Celine Dion’s Australia — New Zealand tour continues until August 14, with multiple dates in Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Auckland still to come. Head to Frontier Touring for more details.

Em Rusciano was shocked when a famous singer made an offensive gesture towards her in the middle of an interview.

Footage from an Aussie band’s US tour shows the moment the lead singer dived into the crowd, leading to a fan’s “catastrophic spinal injury”.

The American singer has slammed the ‘crazy’ behaviour of some Aussie fans at her Melbourne concert.
