For Costa Ricans, coffee is more than just a caffeine kick. The coffee bean is nicknamed grano de oro — the golden grain — in part because of how the industry has shaped the entire country’s development. As one of the world's top exporters, you won't find a better cup of coffee anywhere else. Even Pope Francis is a fan, calling Costa Rica's brew "the world's best coffee."

So if there's one truly authentic Costa Rican experience to have, it's a trip to a coffee farm. Here are the best five coffee tours to take.

The Costa Rica coffee tour experience

To truly understand Costa Rica's connection to the popular brew, a coffee tour is an excellent place to start. A traditional tour will begin with the history of coffee worldwide before guiding visitors through a farm to follow the process from seed to bean to cup.

Coffee is grown in mountainous regions across Costa Rica. Whether you arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (near San José ) or Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (in Liberia ), you can be on a coffee farm within 30 minutes.

The best coffee-growing regions feature high altitude and volcanic soils that create an ideal climate for the plants. In Costa Rica, those conditions aren’t hard to find.

Naranjo, a historic village in the Central Valley , has been producing coffee for more than 150 years. There are  cafetales (coffee farms) in mountainous towns and regions such as Tarrazú, Tres Ríos, Orosí, Brunca and Turrialba. Each region will claim that their coffee is the best in Costa Rica, but it really all comes down to personal preference.

By law, virtually all coffee grown in Costa Rica is arabica, meaning it comes from the Coffea arabica plant first found in the Middle East.

Regardless of where in the country the plants are grown, when coffee berries are ripe, they’re harvested by hand.

The milled beans are bagged and exported. If the coffee is staying in Costa Rica, they’ll be toasted and packaged for sale. And if the beans have been processed as part of your tour, the guide might roast, grind and brew the freshest cup of coffee you’ve ever had.

Choosing a Costa Rica coffee tour

Much like a craft brewery tour, you’ll find that most coffee farmers in Costa Rica follow many of the same steps. What matters, then, is what region of Costa Rica you’re visiting and what type of tour interests you.

Coffee tours in Costa Rica’s Central Valley

The world’s best-known coffee company – Starbucks – runs Hacienda Alsacia , which is located just 30 minutes from the San José airport. In addition to the small-batch coffee they grow, Hacienda Alsacia is also researching climate- and disease-resistant variants. The 1.5-hour tour runs daily from 8am - 4pm with prices starting at US$30 for adults.

In the nearby city of Heredia (within 20 minutes of the airport) is Café Britt , the best-known brand of gourmet Costa Rican coffee. They’ve offered tours since 1991 and make the coffee found at upscale restaurants and gift shops across the country. Café Britt offers a variety of tours ranging from a 1.5-hour coffee-lovers tour (starting at US$26) to a six-hour coffee and adventure tour ($123).

Coffee tours in Monteverde/La Fortuna

Nestled in the mountain town of Monteverde , Don Juan offers a three-in-one tour that focuses on coffee but also highlights chocolate’s indigenous history and sugarcane production. Tours run daily at 8am, 10am, 1pm and 3pm and are fully accessible.

Across Lake Arenal, in La Fortuna , North Fields Cafe provides a similar experience in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. Daily tours run from 8am-4pm.

Coffee tours in Guanacaste

Guanacaste’s climate is better-suited for sugarcane, but the Tío Leo Coffee Tour — minutes away from Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport — is a worthy stop on your way to (or from) the Nicoya Peninsula ’s beautiful beaches. Morning tours run daily from 8am -11. Tickets are $25 per person.

Few activities will combine as much history and culture — not to mention flavor — into a single, quintessentially Costa Rican experience.

7 BEST Coffee Tours in Costa Rica (Local Coffee Plantations You Should Visit!)

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

Everyone who visits Costa Rica comes back raving about the lush tropical rainforests, waterfalls , and gorgeous sandy beaches . But it’s not just the stunning landscapes – in fact, the rich, delicious cups of Costa Rican coffee are just as memorable!

The coffee here is some of the best I’ve ever tasted in the entire world! Perfect growing conditions paired with the love and care Costa Ricans put into growing their coffee are just part of why I think this coffee tastes SO good. But don’t just take my word for it, see and taste for yourself!

During your travels around the country, you’ll likely see stretches of coffee fields growing on the hillsides. So carve out some time in your Costa Rican itinerary to stop and tour one of the plantations. You’ll not only get a cup of coffee (or two!) but see the entire process of where that great cup of coffee started. Plus, you’ll get your caffeine fix for whatever other activities in Costa Rica you might have planned that day!

We’ve narrowed down our list to include the absolute best coffee tours in Costa Rica. These are coffee plantations you don’t want to miss out on visiting! So grab a cup of coffee and read on.

History of Coffee in Costa Rica

Traditional Coffee grinder in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Coffee has been a major part of the Costa Rican economy since the late 1700s. The Arabica coffee plant was first introduced in Costa Rica’s Central Valley region – right around San Jose – because the growing conditions were just right. There’s rich soil, a high altitude, and cooler temperatures. This allows coffee plants to grow and mature more slowly which leads to a complex and better-tasting flavor.

The Costa Rican Government soon realized how lucrative the coffee trade could be and began to offer free land to coffee farmers. By the 19th Century, Costa Rican coffee production exploded, surpassing most of Costa Rica’s other exports like tobacco, sugar, and cacao.

Now one of the things Costa Rica is known for is its delicious, flavorful, and perfectly roasted beans – they’re internationally recognized as some of the best coffee beans in the world. Even today, the country can’t keep up with the demand for this exceptional coffee. The country produces around 1.5 million bags of coffee every year, but that’s still only about 1% of all the coffee produced in the world.

During our stay in Costa Rica , we couldn’t get enough of the bold, delicious flavor of the coffee here. Plus, we loved that most of the coffee is grown sustainably and on small, fair-trade farms.

Needless to say, touring a coffee plantation is one of the best tours in Costa Rica – whether you’re a coffee drinker or not!

What is a coffee plantation?

A pathway leads through a coffee plantation in Costa Rica

A coffee plantation is basically a farm where coffee plants are grown. They are scattered throughout the country, especially in the fertile Central Valley region. You’ll likely see the green and brown coffee fields all along the hillsides if you’re driving around Costa Rica !

Coffee comes from a shrublike tree that’s usually planted on a slope to discourage erosion. The rolling hills of Costa Rica are a perfect location for the coffee trees to thrive.

Each coffee plantation has its own style and methods, and the conditions of the soil can affect the flavor of the bean – much in the same way that wine from different regions tastes unique.

On coffee plantations in Costa Rica, all the coffee is picked by hand! It’s the only coffee-producing country that does this! Harvest season runs from October to March when the coffee cherries are picked – so if you are visiting during this time, you might get to see the harvest in action.

The seeds (or beans) of the coffee fruit are then harvested and dried at the plantation where they are bagged and stored for future roasting. After roasting, the beans are ready to be enjoyed by coffee lovers around the world.

What makes coffee in Costa Rica so good?

Traditional coffee pot in Costa Rica

There’s nothing quite like a good cup of coffee … except maybe when you’re enjoying it on vacation in Costa Rica – am I right?! Part of the reason Costa Rican coffee is coveted around the world is due to its exceptional flavor.

This flavor starts early in the coffee-growing process thanks to the perfect mix of growing conditions. The volcanic soil is full of minerals and nutrients. That paired with a higher altitude (so the plants grow and mature more slowly) and a moderate to warm climate with lots of rain makes for the perfect recipe. Every year the temperatures only vary by about 10 degrees and there are only two seasons – rainy and dry. It’s not only why coffee thrives here, but it also means there are so many great times of year to visit Costa Rica !

While taking coffee tours and exploring the different coffee plantations, we also saw the love and care Costa Ricans put into growing their coffee. Around 90% of the coffee here is grown on small farms by local farmers. They have so much pride in what they do and the final product is incredible!

Throughout Costa Rica, there are eight coffee-growing regions and each of them produces a unique flavor profile. These flavors of the beans will vary significantly from region to region – from sweet and citrusy to dark and heavy and even chocolaty.

The eight coffee regions in Costa Rica are:

  • Valle Occidental
  • Tres Rios
  • Turrialba
  • Brunca
  • Orosi
  • Tarrazu
  • Valle Central
  • Guanacaste

What type of coffee is produced in Costa Rica?

Display showing the color of coffee beans at different stages of roasting in Costa Rica

Costa Rican coffee is 100% Arabica which is recognized as the highest quality coffee bean. They aren’t easy to grow, but they thrive here and produce the most flavorful coffee blends.

Costa Rica is the only country in the world where they don’t allow the production of anything less than 100% Arabica coffee beans. It’s actually illegal to produce any other type of coffee! This ensures every single harvest is of the highest quality.

The coffee made from these beans is smooth and full of flavor. And based on our experience, Costa Rican coffee is certainly among the best in the world!

We couldn’t get enough of it, and we weren’t alone. In the airports, you’ll see hundreds of travelers from around the world stocking up on bags upon bags of Costa Rican coffee beans to take home with them as a flavorful souvenir.

Why should you do a coffee tour in Costa Rica?

A guide shows us small coffee sprouts in Costa Rica during a guided tour

While having a cup of coffee at a local restaurant or picking up a bag of coffee at the airport on your way home is great, there’s something special about seeing where it all starts. Coffee production in Costa Rica has become an art, and the skill of growing and harvesting coffee has been passed down for generations. Coffee is a crucial aspect of Costa Rican culture and the economy.

The high standards of coffee production and the small, family-operated plantations allow local farms to thrive and encourage them to love their land and live sustainably.

Coffee tours invite you into that process and show you the unique history and culture that surrounds coffee production within the country. On a coffee tour, you will see the entire process, from growing the plants, to harvesting and drying the berries, to roasting the beans.

Some tours are more historically based, while others focus on hands-on experiences – such as picking or roasting the beans. Whichever one you choose, these tours are a great way to connect with Costa Rican locals who love what they do. It’s so fun and interesting, plus they are in beautiful settings around the country. You’ll leave with a greater understanding of the entire process, and probably a nice caffeine buzz to boot!

What are the best coffee tours in Costa Rica?

With so many coffee tours offered around Costa Rica, it can be difficult to choose which plantation to tour. During our stay in Costa Rica, we did quite a few tours and drank A LOT of coffee. We’ve narrowed down our list to include only our absolute favorites – the best of the best when it comes to Costa Rican coffee tours!

1. Costa Rican Coffee and Chocolate Crafting Experience (La Fortuna)

Traditional coffee brewer in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

If you’re visiting La Fortuna , after taking in the epic La Fortuna Waterfall and the Arenal Volcano, stick around the area for a little while and consider taking this Costa Rican coffee and chocolate tour . It’s perfect for both coffee lovers and chocolate lovers – and I’m both!

The North Fields Cafe farm is a small family-owned plantation, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn about every single step of the coffee-making process, from planting to taking a sip of warm, delicious coffee. In addition to coffee, they also grow cacao, so you’ll have the opportunity to prepare and taste chocolate as well.

If tasting coffee and chocolate isn’t enough, there’s even a special sugar cane tasting included. It’s a really thorough tour from La Fortuna with great information and the guides are super friendly and willing to answer any questions you have along the way.

The tour itself lasts 2.5 hours and you can choose from a morning or afternoon option, depending on when you want to have your coffee! Hotel pick-up is also offered if you’re staying in the La Fortuna area . The tour is only $43 USD and is a popular one, so it can sell out! Make sure you book online for your travel dates so you’ll have a guaranteed spot on this coffee tour .

2. Coffee Experience with Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Garden (San Jose)

Bailey at Poas Volcano in Costa Rica

This coffee experience tour is close to San Jose, where the country’s main international airport is, so it’s a perfect add-on to your trip right when you arrive, or just before you depart. It’s a full-day tour that includes some cool extras like a trip to the famous La Paz Waterfall, a hike at Poas Volcano , and a coffee-tasting experience at the Doka Coffee Estate.

This is a group tour, and you’ll depart around 6 am – perfect for those early birds, who love a good cup of coffee to start the day! You’ll be picked up from your San Jose hotel and head straight to the Doka Coffee Estate. You’ll enjoy a tasty breakfast which is included as part of the tour before embarking on a journey through the plantation.

We love that this tour includes insights into the traditional process of coffee growing and roasting. It’s very hands-on and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to participate before savoring a delicious sample of the coffee from the plantation.

After the coffee tour, you’ll head to Poas Volcano where you can hike the trail and take in the views of the epic crater. You’ll learn about the unique ecosystem and enjoy the region for about two hours.

Afterward, you’ll depart for the La Paz Waterfall Gardens where you can wander along the winding trails through the beautiful natural settings. You’ll likely spot wildlife like tropical birds , butterflies, and monkeys as well as countless plants. The rumbling river and the beautiful waterfall round out this incredible tour. It’s a great option for travelers who want to see it all, are looking for ideas on how to spend a day around San Jose , or anyone planning a honeymoon in Costa Rica !

3. Poas Volcano and Starbucks coffee farm (San Jose)

The big tanks at Hacienda Alsacia - Starbucks Coffee Farm

Starbucks addicts look no further than this unique tour which allows you to see the roots of your favorite Starbucks drink. The huge Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia plantation is a contrast to some of the small family-run farms on our list – but if you’re a Starbucks lover the experience can’t be beat.

This tour picks up at your hotel and lasts between 10-12 hours so it’s an all-day affair. First, you’ll head straight to Poas Volcano where you will have the opportunity to walk around and explore the cloud forest and volcano.

Admission to the volcano is included in the tour and it’s one of the best volcanoes in Costa Rica , so you’ll definitely want to see it! The hiking trail to the observation deck over the crater here is short and mostly along an access road that should take about 15 minutes. Then enjoy the view of the crater of this super active volcano – it’s erupted 39 times since 1828!

Then, you’ll head to the big commercial coffee farm purchased by Starbucks. It is their first (and so far, only) coffee farm. It’s located right at the base of the volcano, and they invite guests to rediscover coffee here. It’s very educational and there is a cool visitor center to explore. In addition to growing coffee, Starbucks is doing a lot of research about the farming practices at this location.

This full-day tour can be booked online through Viator and will give you bragging rights whenever you order coffee from your local Starbucks at home!

4. Doka Estate Coffee Tour (San Jose)

A large coffee packer in Costa Rica

We really loved the Doka Estate coffee plantation and our experience there on the tour we mentioned earlier. But if you don’t want to commit to a full-day version, this Doka Estate coffee tour is a great shorter option. The tour only lasts about 1.5 hours and hotel pick-up is included from the San Jose area in the $96 USD cost.

During this tour, you’ll learn about coffee as well as the production of sugar cane – another important Costa Rican export. The guides here are so knowledgeable about the entire coffee process, so feel free to ask questions! It’s also really hands-on as you follow how the perfect coffee bean is created from planting until roasting.

You’ll also get the chance to wander through the working sugar mill where you can see how sugar cane is transformed into sugar and molasses.

After your formal tours are done, you’ll have time to explore the butterfly garden on the property. There are hundreds of mini bonsai trees here along with a rainbow of orchids and of course butterflies!

With this tour so close to San Jose, it’s a good day trip from San Jose if you’re looking to get out of the city and explore a bit. If a coffee tour is on your to-do list, but you have a tight schedule, then book this short and sweet tour online !

5. Tio Leo Coffee (Guanacaste)

Grinding cacao on a Tio Leo Coffee Tour

If you’re staying in the gorgeous Guanacaste region (and trust us, you should!) consider this awesome coffee plantation tour at Café Tio Leo ! This tour is one of the most affordable options at $45 USD per person, and a great way to experience the tasty beans that come from this region.

Tours are offered in the morning at 8 am and in the afternoon at 1 pm daily. If you’re here during the summer (November-April), there are also evening tours starting at 4 pm. Tours last about 3 hours and they pack a lot in! You will need to get yourself here though, so consider renting a car to make the drive.

Tio Leo coffee is produced and harvested on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. It’s about 4,500 feet (1,370 meters) above sea level and the soil is rich in minerals and nutrients. You’ll be able to stroll around the coffee plantation to see the plants up close before you watch the coffee roasting process. There’s also a chocolate tour, sugar cane extraction, cooking class, and plenty of snacks!

Because you’ll be walking around the plantation, make sure you wear good walking or hiking shoes (no sandals!), a hat, and long pants. It’s also a good idea to bring some sunscreen and bug spray along.

You can check the availability of the tours and book online via their website . Each tour accommodates a maximum of 12 people, so it’s a smaller group that won’t make you feel lost in the crowd.

6. Coffee and Chocolate Tour (Manuel Antonio)

Daniel walks through a coffee plantation in Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio is one of the premier destinations in Costa Rica and easily one of our favorites. Along with the incredible Manuel Antonio National Park , you can also experience some of the region’s delicious coffee on this coffee tour .

After you’re picked up from where you’re staying in Manuel Antonio or Quepos, this tour includes both coffee and chocolate-making experiences so it’s a great option even if you don’t love coffee. The guides here are wonderful – they aren’t reading a script, just sharing their passion for this country and what it produces.

You get to try a traditional Aztec hot chocolate, coffee, and if you’re lucky even a cocktail made with ginger and sugar cane syrup! The chocolate tastings are a highlight too if you love chocolate as much as me! The orange-mint chocolate is especially good.

The tour is only $60 USD which is a fantastic deal for all it includes, making it one of the best Manuel Antonio tours on offer. You can choose either a morning or afternoon tour that will last 2-3 hours so you’ll still have plenty of time to hit the beach or check out some of the great restaurants in Manuel Antonio after you’re done!

This chocolate and coffee tour in Manuel Antonio can be easily booked online with Viator .

7. Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate Tour (Monteverde)

Coffee beans dry in Costa Rica (2)

While Monteverde is most famous for its Cloud Forest , this region also makes some excellent coffee! The Don Juan Coffee tour is offered by a family-run business that will take you through the entire coffee-making process.

Over the two-hour tour of the Don Juan Plantation , you’ll get an insight into coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane. You’ll learn how coffee goes from a seed planted in the ground to being harvested by hand and then turned into a delicious cup of coffee.

Then chocolate lovers rejoice – you get a full chocolate tour too! You’ll get to see cacao plants up close and may even have the chance to grind cacao beans to make your own chocolate bar. After the demonstration, you’ll get to taste different varieties of melt-in-your-mouth chocolate including dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate.

Monteverde is known for being rainy, but luckily all the trails here are paved with cement – so no mud! It also means if you’re traveling with a stroller or wheelchair, the paths can easily accommodate that.

I loved this tour and thought it was one of the top things to do in Monteverde ! It was the perfect combo of being both fun and informative as we learned so much about all the work that goes into making these yummy treats.

You can book the tour online for $52 USD.

The BEST Things to do in Costa Rica

Bailey walks down steps to Rio Celeste Waterfall

While there are so many fun things to do in Costa Rica , a couple of specific attractions and activities stand out amongst the rest. They are:

Explore Volcanoes

There are some impressive (and beautiful!) volcanoes that you’ll want to check out while you’re here.

Poas Volcano is known for its bright blue crater lake. Poas Volcano is most commonly visited on a day trip from San Jose. This Poas Volcano tour from San Jose is one of the best you can do since it also includes a visit to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens as well as a coffee farm.

Arenal Volcano is also one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. Arenal Volcano is located closest to the town of La Fortuna. You can book this full-day tour from La Fortuna that takes you to the volcano to hike, the famous La Fortuna Waterfall and even a hanging bridge – it’s a full day of adventure!

Chase Waterfalls

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of our favorite waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. You can easily visit it on this full-day tour in La Fortuna that also visits hot springs.

Rio Celeste is another beautiful waterfall that is famous for its bright blue water. Rio Celeste is a popular attraction to visit from Guanacaste Province and this particular tour includes transport from there. Alternatively, you can book this tour from La Fortuna or this tour from San Jose .

See the wildlife

Costa Rica is the place for wildlife lovers! One of the best places to see lots of animals in their wild habitat is at Manuel Antonio National Park . With the help of a guide you will see plenty of birds, monkeys, and even sloths! This particular tour is super popular and also has amazing reviews, so you really can;t go wrong.

There are also lots of wildlife rescue centers around the country that are worth visiting. The Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo is one of our favorites as well as Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in San Jose where you can book this private tour.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Peaberry, known in Spanish as caracolillo, is a type of coffee bean. Normally the fruit (“cherry”) of the coffee plant contains two seeds (“beans”) that develop with flattened facing sides, but sometimes only one of the two seeds is fertilized, and the single seed develops with nothing to flatten it. This oval (or pea-shaped) bean is known as peaberry. Typically around 3% of all coffee beans harvested have experienced this small mutation.

Normal coffee beans are less commonly called by contrast flat berry.

The degree to which coffee beans are roasted is one of the most important factors that determine the taste of the coffee in the cup. Before roasting, green coffee beans are soft, with a fresh “grassy” smell and little or no taste. The coffee roasting process transforms these raw beans into the distinctively aromatic, flavorful, crunchy beans that we recognize as coffee.

Other factors of course enter into the complex equation that determines your coffee’s taste. Two coffee varieties, from different countries of origin or grown in different environments, are likely to taste quite different even when roasted to the same level (especially at light to medium roast levels). The age of the coffee, the processing method, the grind, and the brewing method will also affect the taste. But the roast level provides a baseline, a rough guide to the taste you can expect.

Best Time to Visit Paraíso, Guanacaste

Just like the rest of Costa Rica, the best time to visit Paraíso is in the dry season from December to April. The lack of rain and warm temperature is great for exploring Paraíso’s natural attractions, from the beach to the forests. However, since this is the high season, expect prices to be much higher.

Meanwhile, the green season is from May until November. The heavier rainfall gives this time of year its name—the foliage, particularly in Guanacaste, turns green and lush. Despite the showers, it’s a beautiful time of year to see Paraíso’s local flora and fauna. An added perk is cheaper pricing and fewer crowds this time of year.

Choose your own beach adventure.

Paraíso has a central location close to some of Costa Rica’s best surf spots. If you’re looking for a mix of great surf and nightlife, the popular Playa Tamarindo is less than an hour away. With the option to choose between livelier beaches and more relaxed ones, Paraíso is a scenic middle ground.

This Stunning Costa Rica Hotel Just Got a Multimillion-dollar Renovation — With a Surf School, Golf Course, and Brand-new Wellness Shala

The 198-room Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo is located in Guanacaste.

Food and Drink

Activities and amenities, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Four Seasons

"Did I find paradise?" I think as I sip my cocktail and eat fruit delicately cut into shapes and placed neatly in a container — a sight for the eyes and sweetness for the mouth.

Opened two decades ago, the Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo received a multi-million remodel that finished at the end of 2023, and it has never been more ready for visitors. Located in Papagayo, a peninsula of the Golden Coast of Costa Rica, the 120-acre resort is sandwiched between the expansive Pacific Ocean, where the beach chairs beckon, and another bay called Playa Blanca, where SurfX, its surfing program and pavilion, invites you to ride some waves, paddleboard, or kayak.

The property's crown jewel is the new, state-of-the-art Wellness Shala, welcoming you into serenity above the trees and water. It's a gorgeous architectural marvel that perfectly blends in with its environment, and you’ll find yourself in a zen-like state before your yoga experience or (my favorite) the sound healing session begins. Playing gongs and sound bowls relaxed me into total relaxation before returning to the property's central heart with its newly renovated on-site spa.

The property is sprawling, at 120 acres, which you can explore with e-bikes or walking. It’s seriously one of the most relaxing stays — soon you’ll be living the life of pura vida.

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo

  • The expansive property has six restaurants, three pools, a wellness shala, and an 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed golf course.
  • The Virador Beach Club has an oceanside restaurant and an adults-only infinity edge pool with private cabanas to rent.
  • The design and open-air concept of the communal spaces give the feeling that you are immersed in the natural setting.
  • The rooms are spacious and have private balconies for relaxing.

Don Riddle/Courtesy of Four Seasons

With 198 rooms, tropical landscapes surround all, and the sounds of wildlife can be heard from private balconies. (Don’t worry; they feature mosquito netting to keep bugs at bay, perfect for sipping tea or coffee in the morning while you listen to the far-off waves crashing.) The beds are fluffy, and snooze-inducing (I almost couldn’t will my body out of it, which makes sense, given their 60-year reputation of quality mattresses), and the giant bathtub is the perfect addition to a relaxing stay. Suites and private residences are also available.

CHRISTIAN HORAN/Courtesy of Four Seasons

The Virador Beach Club , the new shining star of the property, is helmed by Chef Khaled Natour, who comes from Shafaram in Israel. The club offers Mediterranean eats, including Mezze plates, labneh, moussaka, kabobs, and more. Watch the waves roll in on the patio as you sip a spritz, or see the stars as you enjoy dinner and dessert. If you’re not feeling the beach club vibe, you can opt for Latin grill Bahia, which features a wood-fired open kitchen and is also the spot for breakfast. Nemare, a steakhouse, is delicious and feels like you’re almost going off-property as it's a short shuttle-ride away at the Peninsula Papagayo golf house. Palapita, set at the tennis center, offers Costa Rican street food and brews for easy nibbles. Añejo is the main bar, and in the morning, it provides quick grab items like acai bowls; in the evening, it features tapas and crudo. Lastly, and one of my favorites, is Pesce, the elegant Italian eatery with indoor and outdoor dining. (And, of course, there’s always room service.)

Larizza Hernandez Sanchez/Courtesy of Four Seasons

The resort offers many activities, including golf on the impressive 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and water activities from the SurfX HQ right on the Playa Blanca beach. Surfing lessons, as well as lessons for the eFoil surfboard , paddle boarding, kayaking, and scuba diving are available. Tennis, volleyball, and other team sports are available. You can also work with staff to rent things like catamarans.

The property has a renovated, on-site spa with multiple treatment rooms, beautiful locker rooms, excellent showers, and access to same-sex hydrotherapy pools. It also has a new, state-of-the-art Wellness Shala set at the tip of the resort (away from the spa, where a staffer drives you up in a golf cart), high above the trees. It’s an architectural marvel that becomes one with the environment, and there, you can partake in yoga classes, private or group, and sound healing sessions.

Spa offerings at the on-site spa range from a Signature Rainforest Massage to facials using Biologique Recherche and my Tsuru Cacao Ancestral Ritual was one that centered around Costa Rican cacao, where I was wrapped like a tamale and relaxed in the heat and massage. Post-ritual, I enjoyed tea in the relaxation room before trying out the hydrotherapy pools.

The resort welcomes children and families of all ages. It has a remodeled kids’ club, designed exclusively for children by Greek architect Polyanna Paraskeva, with natural materials and bright colors that are used to mimic the lush and diverse ecosystems of the mangroves surrounding Peninsula Papagayo, inviting children to play and explore. There’s also the Tuanis Teen Center; all hubs employ staff specially trained for children and young teens. Kids and families can go for hikes and join for beach volleyball and soccer.

The resort features ADA-compliant rooms and the Ocean Course at Peninsula Papagayo is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, making sustainability a core factor. The 18-hole, par-72 Arnold Palmer Signature course and driving range includes a precision irrigation system that will reduce water usage by 20 percent.

Located on the 1,400-acre Papagayo Peninsula, located on the north Pacific Coast in Costa Rica (in the province of Guanacaste), it’s a 40-minute drive from the closest airport of Liberia Guanacaste (LIR).

The hotel regularly offers specials, including up to 25 percent off stays paid for in advance, a complimentary fifth night free, and resort credit packages, including up to $2,000 credit toward golf, activities, and spa treatments.

Best Places to Live In Costa Rica For Families

I have talked to so many families who want to relocate to Costa Rica. In 2019, we packed up our kids and moved to Costa Rica for a year. There were pros and cons to that decision, but we wouldn’t change it for the world!

In this post, I won’t go into as much detail about our experience living in Costa Rica in this post, but I will outline some of the best places to live in Costa Rica for families. We loved being near family, living in a safe place in Central America, and the “second world” feel of the small country- for example, you can drink the water and often use US dollars .

I’m a former school teacher- I taught high school for 15 years before starting this blog. My main recommendations for where to live in Costa Rica center around the schools located in each community. If there aren’t great schools and you are not homeschooling or online schooling, it can be hard to feel good about your decision to move. My best advice is to make sure you tour the schools in the communities you are considering.

Here are my top recommendations for where to live in Costa Rica with your family. If you aren’t moving with a family, please read my post about the best places to live in Costa Rica .

The capital city has it all for families. Top international accredited schools- bilingual, International Baccalaureate, and more are located in San Jose. You’ll find private schools that range in price from $5,000 a year to upwards of $17,000 a year. The highest concentration of accredited bilingual schools is in the San Jose area- it’s the perfect place to get your kids an American education.

The cultural capital of Costa Rica is also in San Jose. Think museums, theater, international shopping, and more! You also have really easy access to the Caribbean coast and the pacific Coast from San José.

Many people in San Jose speak English, so if you aren’t speaking Spanish yet you can get around just fine. There are lots of Spanish teachers for ex-pats too.

Medical care in San Jose is great for those with local insurance or international medical insurance. The best international hospitals and doctors are in San Jose.

The cost of living in San Jose tends to be less expensive too- price ranges on rentals and properties for investment are much larger due to so many options on the market.

You’ll find tons of grocery stores, and farmer’s markets in San Jose. Walmart and PriceSmart (like a local Costco) are in San Jose, making the cost of buying food similar to that of the United States.

Schools in the San Jose area include the British School , the Pan American School , and the Country Day School.

Neighborhoods popular with ex-pats in San Jose include Barrio Escalante, Escazu, Pavas, and Santa Ana.

The small town of Atenas boasts ”the best climate in the world.” There is a tight-knit ex-pat community here, despite the town’s relatively small size. The views from the hills for Atenas are sweeping, and you are in the heart of Costa Rican coffee country.

The Green Valley Atenas School is a bilingual school here. It goes through 11th grade and is accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education.

Close proximity to Jaco and San Jose makes this a fun rural community for families to consider when moving to Costa Rica.

San Ramon has the largest ex-pat community in Costa Rica outside of San Jose, and I would be remiss not to include it on this list.

We lived in San Ramon when we lived in Costa Rica because my husband’s family is from there. We love the town as it’s large enough to have everything you need.

From shopping to restaurants to hiking and biking trails, you’ll find San Ramon has everything you need and most of the things you want.

You are in close proximity to the cloud forest, and the bird-watching is second to none. La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano are just a quick 90 minutes away, and San Jose is just an hour away too .

One of the best things about San Ramon is that the ex-pat community here is united and tight-knit- members meet for breakfast once a week, engage in community service and have a private Facebook group to support each other.

What San Ramon lacks is a strong bilingual school. There is one bilingual private school- Colegio Bilingue San Ramon. Given that the university of Costa Rica has a campus here, you’ll find the public schools brimming with good teachers- albeit instruction in Spanish only.

San Ramon is a great option for those who want to live a truly authentic Costa Rican life. Relocating to San Ramon means you’ll have an instant community of ex-pats and Costa Ricans alike.

If you want to live near Costa Rica’s beautiful Pacific beaches , you have tons of options. Virtually every beach town has an ex-pat community, so it really comes down to where you want to settle.

A few of the top beach towns are Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa. These are the best areas from which to beach hop to some favorite hidden beaches.

Each of these communities offers a private school education with varying ranges of tuition. You’ll find lots of bilinguals and bilingual schools.

You’ll want to secure housing with air conditioning as the heat in northern Guanacaste can be a bit oppressive.

Make sure to find a place with a strong internet connection if you plan to work from these areas- the internet in these more rural areas can be spotty at best in the rural areas.

Living in Guanacaste can also be more expensive- there are luxury hotels , fancy restaurants, and more in the area. It’s such a popular destination for tourists that the popular towns here are expensive.

Guanacaste is a great choice, however, if you are looking for a bit less rain during the rainy season as the rain doesn’t come as hard and fast on the Pacific Ocean as it does in other areas of the country.

Your home base for hospitals, large American grocery stores, and other goods will be Liberia, which is about an hour away from all of these towns except Montezuma and Santa Teresa, which are more rural.

Join the Costa Rica With Kids Facebook Group. Ask all the Costa Rica Travel questions you want- we will answer them!

Schools in Guanacaste include:

  • Costa Rica International Academy (CRIA)
  • Flourish Children’s School
  • IREN Instituto Renacimiento
  • Journey School of Costa Rica
  • La Paz Community School
  • Pacific Waldorf School

Jaco/Playa Hermosa

There’s a nice little ex-pat community in Playa Hermosa, and the kids go to school next door at Jaco . Both beaches are gorgeous and have the advantage of being about an hour away from San Jose. This is a good place to get your feet wet when moving to Costa Rica or exploring where you might want to live.

We’ve written extensively about where to stay in Jaco and where to eat in Jaco , and that’s because it’s one of our family’s favorite beaches.

There are several pre-k to middle school places to study here, but the only k-12 school is the Las Nubes School.

Dominical, Costa Rica is the next hotspot of ex-pat living- and it’s in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica. Right on the beach, it has a thriving community and several options for bilingual and Montessori schools.

The sleepy fishing town has slowly turned into a popular surf beach in southern Costa Rica. Located just an hour south of Manuel Antonio National Park , this laid-back haven for ex-pats has grown exponentially in size over the past 10 years.

Here you have a myriad of beaches within a 25-minute drive, and the rainforest is just behind the beach. The natural beauty here is unparalleled, and it’s a popular spot for locals and expats alike to live and work. There are three hospitals located within 30 minutes of Dominical.

The schools of Dominical are located in Uvita, which is just a 20-minute drive south.

Dominical tends to be more expensive than Central Valley cities as it’s a beach town. Digital nomads and North Americans with dollars do drive the price of goods up. Make sure to plan ahead if you want to move to Dominical- rental housing is more limited than in other areas of Costa Rica.

Rise is its own community near San Isidro El General- offering a Waldorf education, 1-acre land with different housing footprints, and even a relocation specialist.

The couple who started RISE is originally from California they relocated to Costa Rica because they felt a strong disconnect between the life they had and the life they wanted. They created a sustainable community in which families live.

They offer healthy food, on-site glamping and group retreats, and an accredited bilingual Waldorf school.

Close to San Isidro for goods and services, as well as a good hospital makes RISE a great place to relocate if you want a sort of American feel while living in Costa Rica. I have a good friend who relocated from San Ramon to RISE and she is thriving. Her kids adore the school and as a single mom she has found a lot of support from the community.

As you make your decisions about where to live with your family, I highly suggest you take a look at this international and private school guide from Two Weeks in Costa Rica. That can help you narrow down where you want to live if it’s based on schools.

If your decision is not based on schools, then I can help you as you make your transition to living in Costa Rica. Everything from what to pack to when is the best time of year to making sure your kids have a strong transition are things that I can help with. Just book a video chat or phone call with me here – I promise no sales! You just get to pick my brain.
