Tempo Cyclist – Tasmania

Road cycling lifestyle. Ride your damn bike!

Project Postal: 2002 Trek 5200 US Postal Team Edition (Bike Check)

Back in the late 90’s / early 2000’s the Trek 5200 / Trek 5500 was one of the lightest production frames available and was the very first carbon fibre frame to “win” a Tour de France. Ridden by big names such as Tom Boonen, George Hincapie, Tyler Hamilton and Lance Armstrong to multiple race wins, the bike was well ahead of it’s time.

I used to see an older gent cruising around on one in full US POSTAL kit years ago (now that guy is me) and I’ve always loved the classic lines of this frame. When the opportunity to snap one up in Tasmania came along, I didn’t need to be asked twice!

Apart from the frame, the rest of the bike had seen better days. I treated it to a complete strip down, then lovingly built the bike up using high quality modern parts. Some would say this is sacrilege and I should have kept it 100% standard, but I wanted a bike that would ride hard, not hold me back or annoy me with outdated tech. The Trek has turned out FAR better than I expected. Around two decades old and riding better than new! So here it is, finally finished.

I was blown away by the finished bike, she’s a dream! Sure, it’s never going to be an all-out race weapon or compete with with new-era aero bikes, but with a little extra “want to” I can just about keep up with modern machines . But it’s not about that, this bike truly is a joy to ride and brings a smile to my face every time I look at it or swing a leg over the top tube.

And that my friends, is what cycling is all about.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your well-crafted article on “Project Postal: 2002 Trek 5200 US Postal Team Edition”.

I appreciate the effort you put into research for this article about “Project Postal: 2002 Trek 5200 US Postal Team Edition”. It shows in your well-rounded article.

So what bottom bracket was used to convert from the original 109.5×68 Octalink to Hollowtech?

' src=

I am fairly sure it was just a standard Shimano one that fits their new cranks. Removing and replacing the bottom bracket was the one job I got my local bike mechanic to do, as I did not have the correct tools.

' src=

Trek 5200 US Postal. I in the middle of doing a full rebuild on frame with SRAM Red Etap Rim Brake. I have two questions for you. did you have to use a derailleur hanger (if so, which one?) and I was going to try and fit a 28mm tire, do you know if that will work? Love the bike and look. Trying to make this my daily ride/racer. thank you.

Like Liked by 1 person

I used the standard built-in hanger. Working fine with my Shimano groupset so should be fine with eTap also. I very much doubt a 28mm tyre will fit, especially in the rear. Maybe just! Frame clearance is pretty tight in the rear triangle. Currently I’m running Conti GP5000 25mm tyres.

I was very tempted to go eTap for full wireless, but my frame has a big SHIMANO sticker on the chainstay. 😅 Enjoy the build!

' src=

Any clearance issues with the 25mm tyres?

The 25’s work well, but I’d be worried about going any wider.

' src=

great! I’m 85-90 kg so I’m hoping they have enough clearance for climbing out of the saddle and other stress. What type pressure do you run them at?

Around 75-80psi.

' src=

I still have mine. I’ll never get rid of it. It has been mucho MPH down Palomar mountain many times. I also have a near perfectly matching Trek Elite 9.8 mountain bike with a Fox F80RLT fork.

Excellent! 😁

' src=

Finally got the bike all set up (SRAM Red eTap) with 60mm deep Rims (25mm Rim width)…..**Running 28mm Continental Grand Prix 5000** (I’m 150 pounds and use 70 PSI)Just did a 150 mile ride over the weekend to make sure everything worked out well and get my fit dialed in. Everyone was going crazy on how the bike came out. I am really happy with how the bike worked out and excited to to do century ride this weekend.

Epic! I’d love to see some photos! 😁

' src=

Thanks! And one more question: have you noticed that there is less clearance between the rear tire and the seatstay on the drive side than on the non-drive side? My wheel appears to be off center relative to the seat stays by 1-2mm. Maybe it’s part of the Trek 5200 designs, normal bike-to-bike variation, or an issue with the wheel itself.

trek 5200 wheels

Because you’ll never miss every rock Bontrager’s all-new Line wheels are the strongest carbon wheels we’ve ever tested—of any brand. And thanks to an all-new rim design, they also helps prevent pinch flats. We know there are surprises on every trail, but Line wheels are built to stand up to the rigors of the trail and keep you rolling whatever comes your way.

Line wheels make an impact—and take them, too After setting all-time records on our impact test, we decided to build an all-new testing device with a menacing guillotine impact anvil to better recreate a worst-case rock strike. Our all-new impact anvil delivers blows more similar to rock strikes as they happen in real life. Trail riders will never see every rock—but by better understanding the forces at play in a rock strike, we’re able to design and build stronger rims and a better product. The result is an all-new rim design, and our strongest, most durable OCLV Carbon mountain bike wheels yet.

trek 5200 wheels

A great ride feel that lasts The all-new Line wheels feature a shallower wheel depth (27mm) that increases vertical compliance for a smoother ride that gives riders a planted, confident ride-feel without being overly harsh. This shape also helps the wheel absorb impact energy and better transfer it through the whole wheel system to help prevent failure. We also beefed up the hook wall thickness, giving it more than double the thickness of prior models for more strength and durability.

All-new rim design

The 4.6mm hook wall thickness increases strength and durability, while the shallower 27mm depth increases vertical compliance and helps better absorb impacts.

Strongest wheels we've ever tested

To make our wheels stronger, we developed an all-new angled impact anvil to deliver sharper blows that better represent a real-world rock strike. The insights helped make the all-new Line MTB wheels the strongest wheels we've ever tested, of any brand.

Fun-loving durability

Line wheels are trail-rated for durability and a balanced ride feel that offers confidence without being overly harsh on the trail. Because what good is all the strength in the world if it isn’t fun to ride?

Fewer flats

The wider hook bead offers a 300% larger outside hook radius, which means more surface area in contact on a sharp impact. This is great for strength, for durability, and for helping get rid of pinch flats.

OCLV Carbon

Line rims are made of proven OCLV Carbon construction for a strong yet light wheel with proven impact strength and durability.

Rapid Drive 108

Rapid Drive 108 hubs provide 108 points of engagement so you can count on your wheels for quick accelerations and to confidently pedal through even the most demanding terrain.

Good things last

All Bontrager Carbon Wheels are warrantied for life and come with Carbon Care, which offers free repair or replacement to the original owner within the first two years of ownership in the unlikely event of damage from riding.

More strength, more durability, more options Bontrager’s all-new Line mountain bike wheels are now available in multiple options for every rider and every budget.

Line Comp 30

Line Comp 30 is a durable alloy wheel that’s up to the demands of any trail. An updated rim design and all-new alloy material deliver confidence on even the roughest terrain and most rugged rides.

  • Line Comp 30 - 29
  • Line Comp 30 - 27.5

Line Pro 30

Line Pro 30 is the ultimate carbon mountain trail and enduro wheel. It’s built with the lightest rims in the Line family, a more refined hub, and more compliant, lighter-gauge straight-pull spokes.

  • Line Elite 30 - 29
  • Line Elite 30 - 27.5

Line Elite 30

Line Elite 30 is the ultimate carbon trail wheel for value and performance. Elite delivers the same strength and durability as the Pro, with just a few more grams in the rim, and a J-Bend hub.

  • Line Pro 30 - 29
  • Line Pro 30 - 27.5

Warrantied for life

Buy with confidence, ride with confidence. All Bontrager carbon wheels are warrantied for life against manufacturer and material defect.

Carbon Care

No frame flex no matter how hard I hammer yet still somewhat forgiving on the bumps (if you want a "comfortable" ride get a touring bike, this bike becomes "one with you" and transmits the road so be prepared to be driving an extremely fast and well handling sports car, not a luxury car).

May be to quick reacting for some riders, first twenty-five miles was spent on a bicycle trail until I felt comfortable with the much quicker response than my Cannondale 1000 had - some may not like the amount of road feel that is transmitted by the seat and handlebars but most can be nulified by changing seats and bar wrap.

Fantastic bicycle for the price. I'm a 58 year old rider, serious since 1977 when I began doing 50+ mile rides, worked up to double centuries on the weekends (San Diego to Huntington Beach and back the next day) and did my first ride from San Diego to San Francisco in 1978. First $$$ bicycle was a Cannondale 1000 purchased in 1984 which I kept and rode until my purchase of my 5200 two years ago. Wow, my thanks to NASA and the military for developing technology that's bled down to we common folk. This bicycle is fantastic worth every penny I paid for it and then some, especially (ever since I was hit by a car coming out of Balboa Park on 6th Ave) the third chain ring to support my blown-out right kneecap. Don't misunderstand, I loved my Cannondale and for it's manufactured date I'd rate it as a top 5% in the '80's but there's just no comparison to the '05 TREK 5200. Not trying to preclude you from buying an even more expensive TREK or other bicycle but unless you're going into SERIOUS road racing or other demanding bicycle the performance gain versus the money has got to be very slight and, at 57 I'd just be pouring money down the drain to aspire to a more expensive bicycle for the performance gain (why would an old man buy a 15K stero system when he can no longer hear the high's or the low's anymore?). A get bicycle for the money

Similar Products Used:

Have owned a Puegoet Road bike(spell?), a Cannondale 1000, a Pro-tour 15-speed, a Raligh Portage (still have), a Santana Sovg. custom touring (still have).

Light and responsive with rock solid handling. Corners like it's on rails.

I probably wouldn't buy the triple, as nearly the same low is available with a standard double (53/39) and a 12-27 cassette. I spin out at about 40 mph, and rarely use the low ring. (Of course I haven't tried the Death Ride with it yet - probably change my tune after that). Not quite as shock absorbing as I would have thought - coming from my old school Columbus steel frame, I find the ride on rough pavement a bit harsh. Of course everyone and their dog has one, but then that's just an indication of the value of this bike.

All I really wanted was a lower gear on my old bike (I'm too old to pedal a 12-21 freewheel up Ebbet's Pass anymore), but the expense of a new gruppo and the work involved (spreading the rear triangle, etc) was almost the cost of this bike. Overall, this a great bike, and for the price it really can't be beat. Rock solid handling inspires confidence on winding descents, highly responsive and stiff, which translates pedaling into instant forward motion, a very efficient hill climber. It transmits a bit more road vibration than I'm used to (coming from an old school Columbus SLX steel frame). About the only way to get even a slightly better bike is to spend a ton more.

My old Nobillette (Columbus SLX) steel frame with Campy Chorus - Suntour Superbe Pro - Mavic

- abosrbs bumps - fast bike

- the paint doesn't like carbon or what ? I do nothing and get cable rub, small chips... - this is everybody's bike. I removed all decals, and still everybody recognizes it.

Very nice bike, much better than I deserve. I do long distance rides (200+) and it was perfect, absorbed bumps and everything. I got lucky and bought the frame on ebay for 400$. Was pre-owned but didn't show any sign of wear at all. I am selling because it is slightly small. I like it a lot, used it about 6000 miles and was looking for the same model next size, but didn't find any good deal on ebay, so I'm trying a Merlin X-light now.

Trek 5200 8spd, Trek Y-foil w/ Ultegra, Fuji team, Bike Friday, Merlin Extralight.

I have the Bontrager Lite rims and the continental supersonic tires too, and never have any trouble with speed or handling in any weather.

Need to adjust the rear drivetrain a little more than I'm used to - a minor inconvenience.

I saved up for six months to get this bike and I LOVE IT! Looked at the Klein Quantum & Quantum Race, and a few Cannondales too but the "feel" just wasn't the same as the 5200. I'm 6'3' and 215 but we're ONE now (THE BIKE AND I)and I've never ridden better. Bought it at a great price too, that was just the cherry on top.

I've had experience with Schwinns and older Trek models, this is the best yet of those I've ridden on.

Nice light frame with more comfortable ride than Al frames.

Shimano triple leave much to be desired. Can't change chainrings on hills, and 30,42,52 is all wrong. Shifts poorly and bottom bracket was shot after 300 miles with a click. Much prefer the old 39,53 standard drivetrain. Believe the Shimano Ultegra triple should never be mated to a frame with tubes this short, may function well on a touring frame, but was noisy and unreliable on the Trek 5200.

Purchased to replace Bianchi Proto (steel)that was run over. Liked most of the Trek but hated the triple.

Bianchi Road racing frame, Serotta Colorado etc.

Lightweight. Fast. Lifetime warranty. Comfortable. Stiff. Responsive

Paintjob on carbon frame looks unfinished in places. Its a Trek, everyone and their dog has one.

Great Bike. Very stable at high speeds. Very smooth over rough pavement. Rode steel and AL bikes in the past, and nothing compares to the ride of this bike. Hills come easier now and I have gained about 1.5-2.0 MPH just by upgrading to this ride. Biggest bang for the buck out there in my opinion.

Bianchi Vigorelli, Lemond Zurich, Jamis Eclipse.

Light, strong frame; top-notch components; lifetime frame warranty; comfortable ride with plenty of road feedback so you are always in control; can pick it up with one hand for car trips; extremely responsive ride; excellent for very senior riders like me

None...this marvelous bike is perfect!

Having riden touring-type bikes for six decades, I decided it was time [and my last chance] to buy a really good road bike. After extensive research and comparison, I selected Trek 5200T. Going on-line to search for a dealer, I found laudatory reviews at RoadBikeReview of Mountain's Edge Bike Stop in Culpeper, VA. Dealing with Bobby Leftwich of Bike Stop entirely by e-mail (only one brief phone call used), I got the exact bike I wanted with a few upgrades...in a very good deal! I am a very experiened on-line shopper, and to me Bike Stop is a wonderful shop to give your business to...they were reponsive, helpful, and completely excellent in every way. I have been riding the 5200T for about a week (50 miles) and find it to be every bit as good as I expected. Riding it, I get a terrific workout on a machine that is simply a mechanical marvel in its crisp resonse and comfortable ride. I can strongly recommed the Trek 5200T and the Bike Stop. I've made a note in Outlook to post another review a year from now to assess durability and long-term riding.

Aegis -- several comparable models were examnined in detail

Extremely comfortable ride; efficient geometry; very light. You can go fast and carve turns with confidence.

A bit skittish in crosswinds, but that's nit-picking compared to the strengths.

Comfort and efficiency were prime considerations in my purchase. The carbon Trek delivers both. Really smoothes out road resonance and loves to climb. Comparing steel to carbon, I'd say steel feels sportier (a BMW), while carbon is plusher, but still responsive (a Lexus). The carbon frame definitely lets me ride longer with less fatigue, and I can climb in at least one higher gear. Bobby and crew at the BikeStop will go out of their way to make you happy.

Lemond Zurich 59 cm triple

Light, almost too light. Light+ Firm= Fast. Just unbelievably beautiful. A great value, especially compared to similiar bikes.

Sometimes it's too flashy, which can be a good thing. The carbon finish on some parts looks unfinished. The Bontrager tires needed to be replaced after 100 miles. The saddle is completely unforgiving.

This bike is by far the best in it class. This light yet firm bike is a dream ride. With every pedal stroke you can feel the bike propel forward. Forget Ti, OCLV Carbon is the way to go.

Litespeed Classic, and test rode Cologano, other Litespeeds, and a Pinarello.

Lightweight, compliant ride and stiff. It is also one of the best looking bikes out there IMHO. The bike does everything you ask of it.

None so far.

I''m 6''1" and 220 lbs. and this bike does not flex at all when I stomp on it. The bike is speed demon going up hill or on the flats. It is light (16.5 lbs) and very stiff. It feels like it just glides over the road.

Trek 5200 - 20 pounds?

  • Add to quote

trek 5200 wheels

what size is it?? i have a 58 litespeed, with deda magic, rolf vector pros, Dura ace / ultegra mix, FSA crank...and i did the same thing you and i think i was coming up in the 20-21pound range.. good digital bathroom scale, repeated many times. not sure how these guys are getting 16# bikes... oh well, i actually feel the best on the hills, so it cant be hurting me too bad.

Size is 58 cm.

tiger said: Perhaps I'm a bit off here, but I can't believe how much my Trek 5200 weighs. I just weighed it by stepping on the scale holding it, then alone, and subtracting, 20 pounds! Can this be? Here's the spec: 2003 5200, Bontrager race stem, Deda 215 bars, Thomson seatpost, SI Max Flite Trans AM saddle, 30 ci saddle bag with inflator, three cartridges, one tube, light multitool, Tacx Tao cages, Look pedals, Ultegra triple with 12-27 cassette, Arrohead/dura ace/Sapim CXray wheels, Contin GP 3000 tires. I was figuring it would be 18 lbs. But 20 lbs.? (Even more distressing is my Dean titanium, outfitted similarly, was 22 lbs!). No wonder I'm slow on hills! And all along I thought it was a lack of fitness. Click to expand...

trek 5200 wheels

Sounds like the consensus is that this is a typical weight for this bike. Agree that the scale method I used is inaccurate and imprecise, I guess I just expected a couple pounds less even with the errors. Even if I go with a few modifications, I'd only be saving half a pound or so, so it's not likely worth the expense to upgrade for weight savings. As for the heavy seatbag - well, ever since getting caught in the middle of nowhere with my second flat and a DUD CO2 cartridge, I always carry three! Guess it's back to actually training....

R.Rice said: Drone, nice bike. After looking at these weights I am pretty happy about what my new 5500 weighed in at.The shops scale had it 16.8 pounds with pedals, cages and computer. At first I kind of felt like crap seeing some of the bikes around here these guys have that are 14.5-15.5 pounds. Click to expand...

My Dad's 56 CM 5200 Weighed in at 17.5ish without waterbottle or saddle bag. It has upgraded Race X Lite Wheels though.

My 58cm 5200 (04 model) weighs in at 17.5 lb - that is with FSA SLK Mega Exo Compact Crank/RSX Carbon pedals setup and also Ksyrium SSC SL wheels/Conti GP 4000 tires. I think those upgrades dropped the weight by about 1 1/2 pounds. They both have changed the bike pretty dramatically for me, particularly the wheels as the harsher/stiffer ride of the Ksyriums make the ride seem much more lively and "faster" particularly when accelerating and climbing out of the saddle.

1996 Trek 5200, 600 and Ultegra mix, EC70 bar, DEAN Ti seatpost, Eggbeater SL, Ksyrium Elites, 19.8lbs. The extra weight comes in the stem adapter (for my threaded fork), Trico split rail seat (not sure it's comfy yet), cage and computer. I'm sure I can bling it out and drop some weight but it's a "96." What's the point? Is my casual, non-sponsored self really gonna benefit from a couple of lbs? At approx $500-$1000/lb?

Strength: My 5200 is a 2006 triple chain ring Ultegra gruppo model that has performed flawlessly for nearly 10 years. For its era, it is very light, stiff, but with enough compliance to feel smooth at full gas speed. It has good power transfer to wheel when compared with my recent purchase of the Trek Emonda SL5.

  2. 15 years old and still my favourite Carbon ride. Trek 5200

Trek 5200 is a great bike. Not as stiff as a the newer bikes out there and slightly heavier, but very comfortable and better built than many of the newer bikes. Bike can be made to feel more modern simply by upgrading the wheels and component group. I like the look of my USPS colored bike more than the newer bikes out there.

Any Zipp 303 will fit an 8-speed cassette. The 303 was only introduced ~1999, while 8-speed predates that by a long time (at least in cycling terms). Elite, Farsports, Winspace, or Superteam for inexpensive to midrange cost upgrades. Or, if you want to look maximum cool, the Race X Lite Carbon Aero from like 2006ish.

  15. Trek 5200 2003 Road Bike

The TREK 5200 fits me perfectly! I am 5'9" and I have a 54cm bike. It fits so well that I am very comfortable riding in the "drop' position the entire time. The true reason why I purchased this bike though is the frame! The OCLV Carbon frame absorbs so much road vibration and is extremely light and extremely strong!

  18. Trek 1999 5200T Older Road Bike user reviews : 4.9 out of 5

Rolf wheels seem to transmit more road shock than conventional wheels. This bike seems extremely stiff, yet smooth riding. Handling seems a little quicker than the LeMond. The Trek 5220 I test-rode twice did not seem as stable at speed as the 5200, which I attribute to a lesser fork on the 5220.

  20. Trek 5200 Triple 2002 Road Bike
