Inside the district, a number of traditional Emirati houses have been preserved and now are home to museums.

Three of the museums are well worth a visit for insights on Emirati heritage. The Sharjah Heritage Museum hosts exhibits covering all facets of traditional Emirati life.

The Calligraphy Museum explores this Arab art form, with galleries hung with work from the Arab world's finest calligraphy artists. And Bait Al Naboodah is a finely restored traditional family villa, once home to the Al-Shamsi family.

A number of traditional souk areas have also been revived in the neighborhood. Souk Al Arsah is the best one to visit. This large covered courtyard souk is thought to be the oldest surviving bazaar in the country. It has been fully restored in its traditional style and now includes a number of different shops featuring silver and wooden handicrafts, jewelry, traditional garments, and beauty products.

The Umm An Nar Bronze Age tomb at Mleiha's Visitor Center

Sharjah's Mleiha Archaeological Site is one of the best places to visit in the UAE to both learn about the deep history of the Arabian Peninsula and to add some desert activities into your vacation.

Mleiha is near the small settlement of Maleha, 60 kilometers east from Sharjah city.

Mleiha's museum and visitor center at the site entrance offer a thorough rundown of the site's history and heritage, and arranges a variety of tours for exploring the surrounding area with its orange sand dunes and craggy rock outcrops.

Desert activities include 4WD tours across the sand dunes, horse riding desert tours, desert buggy trips, and short hikes.

In the evenings, they run stargazing tours at their "sunset lounge," where you can watch sunset on cushions set up in the desert and then learn about basic astronomy aided by a guide and telescope. Overnight desert camping tours are also available.

The vast and multi-layered archaeological site itself is hugely significant to our understanding of early human history.

In the caves here, the first evidence of Paleolithic human activity outside of Africa was found.

Other parts of the site have revealed evidence of a later Neolithic settlement; Bronze Age tombs, including a large Umm An Nar tomb (which has been incorporated beautifully into the visitor center area); and fort and palace remnants from a 2nd- or 3rd-century settlement here.

The visitor center offers archaeological tours covering the major sites plus hikes up to the caves where signs of early human habitation were found.

Sharjah Fort

Sharjah Fort (called Al Hisn in Arabic) sits on a plaza at the corner of the Heritage District.

The fort was built 200 years ago and has served as both a defensive facility for the town and as the traditional residence of the ruling family of Sharjah.

Inside, the rooms contain themed displays tracing the history of Sharjah, as well as the town's importance as part of the Gulf's trade networks.

One exhibit details the painstaking restoration of the building in the late 20th century. From the roof, there are great views across the Heritage District and out to the sea.

Address: Hisn Avenue, Sharjah

Snakes at the Sharjah Desert Park

The Sharjah Desert Park offers kids an easy taster of the UAE's desert ecology and wildlife. It's 31 kilometers east of Sharjah city, along the E88 Highway.

The center incorporates three different neighboring sites:

The Arabia Wildlife Center is the main area, with enclosures housing Arabian oryx, Arabian leopards, and endemic reptiles. There's also a children's farm, where little ones can get up close to typical farm animals. The wildlife center has an important breeding program for endangered animals in the Gulf region.

The Sharjah Natural History Museum offers a thorough overview of the UAE's wildlife, plants, and geological history and has been fully set up with children in mind to enhance the learning experience.

Sharjah Desert Park's other main site is the Islamic Botanical Garden , a lush green space where 52 plant species all mentioned in the Qur'an (including figs, black cumin, and henna) are grown along with other plants such as saffron and pomegranate. The garden is landscaped to incorporate waterways and pools inspired by the Gulf's traditional horticulture irrigation system.

Central Market

Sharjah's Central Market, built in the 1970s, is the city's most famous architectural landmark. The intricate blue tile work on the exterior has given it the nickname the Blue Souk.

More than 600 shops are inside, where shoppers will find sections devoted to gold and jewelry, perfume, clothing, food, electronics, and gift-type items.

The upper floor has the atmosphere of a traditional bazaar, with vendors selling antiques, carpets, Omani and Yemeni jewelry, and all sorts of other souvenir-type items that hail from the greater Arab world, as well as central and south Asia.

For downtime after shopping exploits, the market area is also home to plenty of cafés.

Location: Khalid Lagoon, Sharjah

Al Noor Island

This public park, created in Khalid Lagoon and accessed by bridge from the central city's Corniche Street, is Sharjah's top spot if you're looking for some tranquil downtime to recuperate from shopping and museum exploring.

The island blends art and nature into its design, and features gardens scattered with modern art sculptures and installations, created by some of the world's most renowned artists.

The premier attraction is Al Noor Island's butterfly house, where approximately 500 different butterfly species can be seen.

For smaller kids, it's a great, close-up encounter with nature, though anyone with an interest in the natural world will also enjoy a visit.

In the evenings, the island is a good option for an after-dinner family stroll, as after dark, the art installations amid the island's gardens are lit up, creating a charming, fairy-tale world. Be aware, though, that the butterfly house is closed after dark, so you may need to make two visits to enjoy the full charm of Al Noor Island.

Sharjah Maritime Museum

As a settlement, Sharjah has always been linked closely to the water, and the Aquarium and Maritime Museum highlights the importance of the sea in the city's and the emirate's development.

For kids, the aquarium is the main attraction, and hosts around 150 species of sea life, including reef sharks and stingrays.

The connected Maritime Museum hosts interesting exhibits on traditional wooden dhows, as well as pearl collecting and fishing — all once important to the economy here.

Highlights include the collection of glimmering pearls (including what is thought to be the oldest pearl ever collected in the world) and the beautiful wooden dhow docked outside the museum.

Address: Al Meena Street, Al Khan district, Sharjah

Souk Area

Sharjah's huge, covered Souk Al-Jubail is an excellent way to experience the bustle of traditional Arabian shopping in a modern setting.

Join local shoppers as they do their weekly rounds at the fish souk — a stinky and busy mix of noise and color — and then dive into the fruit and vegetable souk, which is always crowded with vendors shouting out their prices and customers bargaining for good deals.

As well as being a prime opportunity to capture some vibrant photos of daily Sharjah life and see a shopping souk that hasn't been dressed up for the tourists, this is a great place to pick up gifts of local produce to take back home, such as dates and local honey.

Address: Corniche Road, Sharjah

Sharjah Archaeology Museum

Sharjah Archaeology Museum has exhibits tracing the wide-arcing history of humanity in the area.

Displays in the Stone Age section include numerous flint pieces reflecting the technology of that period, and old seashells. There are also ornamental gems and pottery shards from the Ubaid period that were found in Al Hamriyah and confirm the trade exchange of this age with Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq).

The Bronze Age Hall features archaeological finds of pottery, metals, stone, and jewelry, while the Iron Age Hall is home to two of the museum's prize pieces: a camel statue and a ceramic dome that both come from the Muweilah archaeological site.

The museum has done a good job of making its exhibits user-friendly, and children will be kept entertained by a variety of hands-on games.

Next door is the Sharjah Science Museum, the only interactive hands-on museum in the United Arab Emirates.

The Exhibition Hall includes state-of-the-art elements, which have been designed to get children interested in science. You can test your flexibility, grip strength, and balance; make a cartoon; use a music synthesizer; build a puzzle of the human body; or visit Playspace (which caters to younger children).

The on-site Planetarium takes you on a tour of the universe, from the Sharjah sky to deep space.

Kalba

The most southerly village in the United Arab Emirates, Kalba is a tiny exclave of the Emirate of Sharjah on the eastern coast.

About 112 kilometers east of Sharjah, it's a charming place for a stroll that is worth the trip for the Al-Hisn Museum (built as a fort 200 years ago) and the fully restored House of Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al-Qassimi with its displays of musical instruments and traditional furniture.

Just south of the village is the Khor Kalba Conservation Reserve containing a vast mangrove forest.

This is a bird-watcher's paradise, especially during spring and autumn migrations.

Visitors can spot the rare white-collared kingfishers that breed here, as well as reef herons and booted warblers. Trips to the reserve are by boat or kayaking tours.

On the outskirts of Kalba town is the Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center, a nature reserve with 30 desert and mountain species.

The large internal enclosure houses smaller animals such as reptiles, while outdoors, the large natural habitat style enclosures are home to desert lynx, Arabian leopards, caracal, and wolves.

Al Qasba

This waterfront quarter, alongside the Al Qasbah Canal, is Sharjah's top nighttime destination with plenty of cafés and restaurants rimming both sides of the canal.

It's a favorite place for promenading families in the evening, and there is plenty of kid-focused fun to be had in this district.

There are both outdoor and indoor children's entertainment parks within the quarter, featuring a variety of rides, a go-cart center, and a soft-play area to keep little ones busy.

Head here also for evening boat rides, which launch from the canal out into Khalid Lagoon to see Sharjah's skyline lit up after dark.

Beautiful beach at Khor Fakkan

Khor Fakkan is the second largest town on the east coast and an exclave of Sharjah. It's 109 kilometers east of Sharjah city.

Although the main feature of town is the thriving and less-than-picturesque container port, it's surrounded by a long stretch of beach that trails along the shore.

Khor Fakkan is only home to one mid-range older resort (Al Aqsah, just up the coast in Fujairah gets most of the east coast's beach-going tourists), but the sand here is good for a stop-off if you're road-tripping down the coast.

In the center of Khor Fakkan is one of Sharjah's newest tourist attractions, a huge manmade waterfall and a theater built in Roman-style overlooking the sea.

Al Noor Mosque

The Al Noor Mosque is the only mosque in Sharjah open to non-Muslims.

Anyone interested in digging a bit deeper into the heritage of the United Arab Emirates and wanting to learn a little about Islamic beliefs would find a visit here a worthy addition to their Sharjah itinerary.

Non-Muslims can visit the mosque on a tour, which takes place every Monday at 10am and includes a discussion on Islamic and Emirati history, culture, and traditions.

The mosque itself is a modern construction (built in 2005) and modeled on classical Ottoman style, with slender, pointed minarets, typical of Ottoman mosque architecture.

Sharjah Rain Room

This immersive art installation, recreating a continuous flow of torrential rain, was previously exhibited in London, New York, and Shanghai but has found a permanent home in Sharjah.

The installation, set in a darkened space, with 2,500 liters of water recycled and looped through the ceiling, uses sensor technology so that visitors can walk through the rain without getting wet themselves.

Visiting the installation is very popular with UAE locals, who see little real rain throughout the year, but even those from wetter climes will appreciate the cleverness of the technology that allows you to wander through a downpour without getting soaked.

Eye of the Emirates observation wheel in Sharjah

Al Montazah Island (also known as Flag Island) is a top spot in Sharjah if the kids need to let off some steam.

This small island in Khalid Lagoon is home to both a theme park with roller coasters and other rides plus a water park with plenty of water slides to beat the heat and have some fun.

The island's big attraction, though, is the 60-meter-high Eye of the Emirates observation wheel. Head up on this big wheel to get a soaring perspective over the city. Views from the top can stretch for 50 kilometers. It's particularly good for nighttime shots of Sharjah's lights and many illuminated buildings.

Hotels are spread throughout Sharjah with a scattering of resorts along the beachfront and plenty of high-rise hotels near the Corniche, facing Khalid Lagoon, in the city center.

Luxury Hotels:

  • The Hilton Sharjah, near the Al-Qasba area, overlooks Khalid Lagoon and offers a complimentary shuttle to a nearby private beach. There is a great rooftop pool area.
  • If you want the sand, the Radisson Blu Resort is in Sharjah's beachfront area and features a private beach and swimming pools, a gym, and a spa.
  • Also in the beachfront area, Coral Beach Resort Sharjah rims a clean sweep of beach and offers plenty of pools and restaurants with a swag of kids' activities for family-friendly holidays.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • A popular option for longer stays in the city, Ramada Sharjah has a great central location opposite a shopping mall and near the lagoon and corniche. Its one- and two-bedroom apartments come with full kitchens and laundry facilities.
  • TIME Ruby Hotel Apartments has solid facilities and friendly staff and a good central city location, while Lou Lou'a Beach Resort , right on the oceanfront, is an affordable beachfront district option with a great pool area overlooking the sea, and good-sized rooms.

Budget Hotels:

  • With a pool as its focal point, Sharjah Beach Hotel offers great value, considering its prime location on the beach less than 10 minutes' drive from the Heritage Area. The pool area is big, and rooms have balconies facing the sea.
  • In the city center, Spark Residence is convenient for longer stays, with its one- and two-bedroom suites.

All area rulers rejected the British request for an airstrip, except for the then ruler of Sharjah. In 1932 an airstrip was built in Sharjah and a fort guarded by armed guards to protect against the Bedouin raids.

In return, Sharjah obtained money for the rent from the British, and made sure that its port became the main port for British ships, which greatly improved the economy of the emirate.

Al Mahatta Fort was for a long time the only airport in the entire region , and after unification it became the first airport in the UAE. Al Mahatta Fort remained active until 1977 when Sharjah International Airport was built. Today it can be visited and houses the Sharjah Aviation Museum , which tells the history of air travel in the UAE.

  • Other Hidden Gems in Sharjah

You may know Sharjah as a traditional emirate with a rich culture, museums, waterfronts and art spaces, but there’s more to the emirate than you probably know. So join us as we explore some of the hidden gems in Sharjah that will help you discover the emirate in a different way.

BEST HIDDEN GEMS IN SHARJAH

Wadis and off-the-beaten places.

wadis in the UAE

WADI AL HELO

Wadi Al Helo means ”sweet valley”. Located between the Hajar Mountains (Sharjah-Kalba highway), the wadi attracts tourists from far and wide despite its remote location. It features lush greenery and a free-flowing underground world. A restored Islamic watchtower is also present on a small hill nearby. This is a prominent archaeological site in the UAE .

You can also find plenty of birds, gazelles and reptiles, along with the UAE’s national animal, the Arabian Oryx in the wadi. And the fact that the wadi serves as a natural observation deck offering unobstructed views of the beautiful surroundings… is what adds to its charm for visitors.

This is another of Sharjah’s best-kept secrets, bordered by the Oman exclave of Madha. Nahwa is a small mountain village in Sharjah. The counter-enclave was formed nearly 70 years ago in the 1930s when the four leaders of rival clans of Musandam Peninsula posed a question to village elders to nominate the next sheikhdom.

Madha preferred Oman but Nahwa pledged its allegiance to the ruling family of Sharjah, effectively creating a counter enclave on the outskirts of Madha.

The original village, however, was abandoned in 1999, resulting in the foundation of New Nahwa built on a curve in Wadi Shis. Nahwa is a great sightseeing spot with date palm plantations, freshwater pools, a trekking area and rocky peaks.

DIBBA AL HISN

Bordered by the Gulf of Oman, Dibba Al Hisn is a smaller, pene-exclave of Sharjah which includes public parks and corniche beaches. The area also houses three souqs: a tiny seafood souq, a fruit and vegetables market and a covered retail space selling toys, clothes and souvenirs.

This area is named after an ancient fortress and has also been a significant site for maritime trade since pre-Islamic days.

THE GHOST VILLAGE AL MADAM

The ghost village of Al Madam is another hidden gem in Sharjah. Located near Al Madam, the place features two rows of homes and a beautiful mosque that have been left to for the desert to consume them.

Most houses here have been left with doors wide open. Some of them don’t even have doors. There are houses that have beautiful mosaics and one of them even features a wallpaper mural of a landscape – an eerie indication that this village was once inhabited.

There are speculations that the original dwellers may have left the place in a hurry or abandoned it out of fear of supernatural forces. However, there is nobody who could deny or approve these rumours.

To trace the origin of the village, Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) conducted interviews with locals in 2018. As per some of those interviews, the village was developed somewhere in the 1970s but due to ferocious sandstorms, most villagers rendered it uninhabitable, abandoned it and found a home elsewhere.

Another theory is that the village had been a part of the Sha’bi housing project, an initiative the UAE government organised to facilitate the Bedouin population with well-developed houses. But looking at the current state of the village, it seems things didn’t go according as planned.

15 BEST Places To Visit In Sharjah, UAE – 2024 Guide

A complete guide on the 15 BEST places to visit in Sharjah to help you craft together your own itinerary.

Everyone knows the modern and sophisticated Dubai, however, if you’re looking to discover more of the UAE, then the historical and cultural sides of Sharjah are exactly what you’re looking for.

From stunning museums to archaeological sites to the well-known Al Noor Island, we’ll go through the best things to do in Sharjah, a list of all the top Sharjah attractions, the best months to visit, and much more!

Sharjah 10

Table of Contents

QUICK ANSWERS: PLACES TO VISIT IN SHARJAH

Where is sharjah.

The city of Sharjah is the third biggest city in the United Arab Emirates and covers 1,000 miles (2,590 square km). To the south, you’ll find Dubai, and to the north is Umm al-Quwain.

When arriving at Dubai International Airport, it’s a short 10-15 minute drive to reach Sharjah.

The emirate of Sharjah is the third biggest in the country and it has a coast on both the Gulf of Oman to the East and the Persian Gulf to the West.

BEST MONTHS TO VISIT SHARJAH

The months of December, January, and Februar y are the best to visit Sharjah UAE, and you’ll find pleasant weather with low humidity and certainly not as hot as the rest of the year.

Unlike other parts of the country, temperatures here are always around 20 degrees Celsius.

Alternatively, March and April are good months to enjoy all the best places to visit in Sharjah.

IS SHARJAH EXPENSIVE TO VISIT?

The UAE is famous for being an expensive place to visit, but you’ll be surprised to know that it’s actually not as pricey as you’d imagine.

As a solo traveler, expect to pay around $160 per day in total. For a couple, a suitable budget should be between $250 and $270. Lastly, as a family, expect to spend about $300 to $400 per day.

You can decrease that budget by eating in local restaurants rather than luxurious ones and staying in more budget-friendly hotels.

Also, you can rent a car and save some cash on tours, but you shouldn’t miss some important things to do in Sharjah that we’ll go through here in this guide.

IS SHARJAH WORTH VISITING?

Sharjah is one of the best places to visit in the United Arab Emirates, with lots of cultural activities, the best Arabic deserts in the country, and it’s not as overcrowded as Dubai.

The Emirate also created the Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture by Unesco back in 1998 and it added lots of educational value to the city.

All things considered, visiting the city of Sharjah and all of the top Sharjah attractions is definitely worth it and I couldn’t recommend it more.

HOW FAR IS SHARJAH FROM DUBAI?

The main reason why you’ve come to the United Arab Emirates is probably Dubai, but a drive to Sharjah won’t take you long.

Sharjah and Dubai are quite close to each other and it only takes around 20-25 minutes to reach Sharjah from the center of Dubai, and just 10-15 minutes from Dubai International Airport.

Sharjah 100

WHAT IS SHARJAH KNOWN FOR?

Sharjah is famous for being the cultural center of the UAE with many libraries and museums and for its title as the cultural capital of the Arab world.

The Sharjah administration makes lots of efforts to preserve its heritage and you will see it on every corner of the city.

Lastly, it is the only Emirate with beaches on both its eastern and western sides of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

SHOULD YOU VISIT DUBAI OR SHARJAH?

While both cities are worth visiting, they are very different and you should see the differences with your own eyes.

Dubai is a vibrant, progressive, sometimes chaotic, and glamorous city with lots of shopping malls, ex-pats, and attractions that you won’t see anywhere else in the world.

On the other hand, Sharjah is more of a laidback, conservative city with lots of cultural events happening.

Also, you’ll find many more locals living here as opposed to Dubai, which certainly helps to see the real side of the United Arab Emirates.

The Sharjah Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in the world with its highly detailed dome and minaret.

It’s a popular tourist attraction in Sharjah and it draws thousands of visitors each year, both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

You will experience the beauty of Islamic art, architecture, and design, and it will remind you of the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi for its architecture and majestic interior decor.

What I personally loved about the Sharjah Masjid mosque was how peaceful it was despite it being so massive.

AL BUHAIS GEOLOGICAL PARK

Nestled in the desert about one hour away from downtown, Al Buhais Geological Park is an incredible Sharjah tourist attraction that you shouldn’t miss.

The park is home to a number of geological features and materials explaining how the land was formed. It’s much different than the regular tourist attractions in Sharjah, but I can’t recommend it enough.

You’ll be greeted with a 15-minute video explaining what the visit will entail, then walk the mountain circuit trail, and stop by the cafe with tasty coffee and desserts at the end of your visit.

It offers a variety of activities, including a children’s playground, a massive garden to relax, and even a BBQ area.

Apart from that, there’s also a prayer room, a cafe, and a rest area that you’ll certainly enjoy after hiking everywhere around the park.

Make sure to come early in the morning as it gets very crowded during the day, especially in the peak season from December to February.

AL SUHUB REST

Located 600 meters above sea level, the Al Suhub Rest Area is a popular stop for tourists and locals alike, as it offers a variety of services and the panoramic view is just spectacular.

I’d recommend passing by in the morning to see the sunrise and the mist over the mountains.

On the other hand, in the evening, you’ll see all the city lights from above and that is an experience not to be missed.

There’s also a children’s playground, making it one of the free things to do in Sharjah for both adults and kids!

You’ll also find a cafe and you’ll get a 2-hour free parking voucher included which is enough to wander around before going back to the city of Sharjah.

KHORFAKKAN AMPHITHEATRE & WATERFALL

This ‘best places to visit in Sharjah’ guide wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include the Khorfakkan Amphitheatre, which happens to be one of the UAE’s most famous landmarks.

It’s a stunning amphitheater with Roman columns and an impressive waterfall located right next to it.

The amphitheater has been recently constructed and is in excellent working order. The beach across the road is a plus, as is the artificial waterfall nearby.

If you enjoy beaches and mountains, you’ll love this spot since it has both in spades.

All in all, I highly recommend adding both the Khorfakkan Amphitheatre and waterfall to your list of Sharjah places to visit.

25 Best Places to Visit in Sharjah – Major Sharjah Tourist Attractions

Places to visit in sharjah

While Sharjah shares a border with Dubai, most travelers don’t pay much attention to it. I really feel sorry for Sharjah since it has many tourist places and it is also cheaper than Dubai, particularly in terms of food and accommodations. I can’t say Sharjah is as rich in skyscrapers and luxury 5-star hotels as Dubai. As opposed to Dubai, Sharjah continues to hold traditional Islamic civilization and Arabic culture values. In addition to its beautiful mosques and awe-inspiring museums, it’s also home to great natural beauty. Having said that, Sharjah doesn’t revolve around art and history only. In the last few years, Sharjah tourism has boasted and added new tourist attractions to attract tourists.

As a result, there are now some places to visit in Sharjah that are a thousand times better than Dubai. Although some of these Sharjah tourist attractions cost nothing, others will hit you up for a small amount. Yet, before visiting Sharjah, you should know that Sharjah doesn’t have lavish metro trains. However, Sharjah has secure and modern buses with comfortable seats. Anyway, the following 25 are the most popular places to visit in Sharjah .

Ten things to see and do in Khor Fakkan: Waterfalls, beaches, museums and more

Khor Fakkan , on the UAE’s east coast, is a great place for a getaway when you need a change of scenery.

The seaside town in the emirate of Sharjah is surrounded by the emirate of Fujairah and has plenty to see and do, from family-friendly activities to hiking trails and historical discoveries.

Sitting on the Gulf of Oman, the Sharjah enclave boasts cooling winds, golden shorelines and a rugged Hajar mountain backdrop.

Here are ten things to do on your next visit.

1. Khor Fakkan Waterfalls

This man-made waterfall towers 45 metres high on a natural cliff overlooking the town's Corniche. Its thundering waterways carved out of the rocks makes for a worthy stopping point on any visit to the town. There are a few cafes and ample parking spaces nearby, and its right next to Khor Fakkan Amphitheatre – a sprawling Roman-inspired structure that’s become something of a local landmark. It’s also worth visiting the falls in the evening when strategically placed lighting illuminates the cascading water.

2. Al Rafisah Dam

Get out on the water at Al Rasifah Dam just off the Sharjah-Khor Fakkan highway. Originally built in the 1980s, the dam has recently been upgraded and has a visitors' centre, a rest area and a whole host of watersports on offer. Go kayaking, head out on a pedalo or spin around the dam on a doughnut boat. It’s also a great place to enjoy a picnic with picturesque views of the sandstone mountain range and bright blue reservoir.

3. Shees Park

Shees Park is a relatively new addition to Khor Fakkan, having opened in 2020 and is a great place to stop off on a road trip, or to take the family to during the cooler months. Nestled among the Hajar Mountains, it is spread over 11,000 square metres and has a 25-metre-tall waterfall, an artificial lake, play areas, barbecue spots, an open-air amphitheatre and 500 metres of mountain walkways leading visitors to a main viewing deck with epic vistas.

4. Al Rabi Tower

Perched on a hill overlooking Khor Fakkan town is Al Rabi Tower. This stone structure was built in 1915 as part of the town’s defence network of watchtowers. Today, it’s also the start of a picturesque hiking trail. Winding through the hills, this 5.3km trail is well-marked and zigzags up to a 395-metre summit with fantastic views. Post-hike, head to The View by Wave — a boho-chic cafe with barista-art coffees and light bites served with amazing views from the outdoor terrace.

5. Al Suhub Rest House

Looking like it's straight out of a sci-fi film, the flying-saucer-shaped Al Suhub Rest House is about a 30-minute drive from Khor Fakkan town. Perched high on a hillside, it’s a great place to go for ample views of the destination's mountains and coastlines. There's also service amenities and Fen Cafe & Restaurant, which serves up tasty bites alongside panoramic vistas.

6. Najd Al Maqsar Heritage Village

The restored village of Najd Al Maqsar offers a glimpse into life in a different era. Nestled on the slopes of the Hajar Mountains, it is made up of 13 mud and stone houses dating back centuries. Al Maqsar Tower is the village's 300-year-old fortress, perched atop the highest peak and constructed as part of Khor Fakkan’s watchtower defence network. Restoration work is ongoing at the village, with plans to turn the buildings into heritage hotel units and to add a terrace on the fort to make the most of its views over the surrounding valley. Visitors will soon be able to check-in for the night at this historical destination which will operate as a new retreat by The Sharjah Collection - the same hotel group that operates the Kingfisher, Al Faya and Al Badayer Retreats as well as Sharjah's luxury glamping site Moon.

7. Khor Fakkan Beach

As a seaside town, Khor Fakkan is famed for its golden shorelines and Khor Fakkan Beach is one of the town's highlights. Having recently been redeveloped, the 2.5km shoreline and corniche now includes an inflatable water play area, various food trucks, fountains, a skate park, play parks and even a beach library. History buffs should head to the southern end of the palm-lined Corniche to see the triangular Portuguese Fort which dates back to 1635.

8. Souq Sharq

Step back in time with a visit to Khor Fakkan’s old souq, designed in the style of a traditional heritage village. Souq Sharq is the place to shop for spices, herbs, handicrafts and more in this cluster of restored buildings. On-site there's also a traditional crafts museums that sheds more light on what life was like in the region in years gone by, and entrance is free.

9. Shark Island

A short boat ride away from Khor Fakkan bay's south-eastern side is Shark Island, a small rocky isle that’s a great place to visit for a day of beachside chilling. Huge shoals of coral surrounding the island make it a fantastic snorkelling destination and the island is also popular with scuba divers who come to spot blacktip reef sharks and other marine life.

10. Hisn Khor Fakkan museum

Step back in time with a visit to Hisn Khor Fakkan museum. Designed to replicate the nearby fort, it opened in 2019 and houses a fantastic collection of artefacts. Step inside the fortress-like building to see exhibits, photographs and 3D models that narrate important parts of Sharjah's rich east coast history. There are also treasures that archaeologists have unearthed in Khof Fakkan and the surrounding areas, including carvings depicting people hunting or dancing, walking or riding on horseback, and others of animals that would have been common in this region.

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service today reminded the 1 million people who didn’t file their tax year 2020 returns they may be eligible for a refund if they file by the May 17 deadline.

The IRS estimates more than $1 billion in refunds remain unclaimed because people haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns yet. The state-by-state table below shows how many people are potentially eligible for these refunds, and the average median refund in each state.

There's no penalty for failure to file if a refund is due. However, a return claiming a refund must be filed within three years of its due date for a refund to be allowed. After the expiration of the three-year period, the refund statute generally prevents the issuance of a refund check and the application of any credits, including overpayments of estimated taxes or withholding amounts, to other tax years that are underpaid.

For 2020 tax returns, people have a little more time than usual to file their claim for refunds. Typically, the filing deadline to claim old refunds falls around the tax deadline of April 15. However, the 2020 filing deadline was pushed to May 17, due to COVID-19, making the three-year window deadline for 2020 unfiled returns May 17, 2024. The IRS issued Notice 2023-21 on Feb. 27, 2023, providing legal guidance on claims required by the postponed deadline.

Many people who didn’t file may be eligible for more

By missing out on filing a tax return, people stand to lose more than just their refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2020. The estimate does not include credits that non-filers may be eligible to receive. Credits include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) , the Recovery Rebate Credit or other credits that may be applicable.

Many low- and moderate-income workers may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For 2020, the EITC was worth as much as $6,660 for taxpayers with qualifying children. The EITC helps individuals and families whose incomes are below certain thresholds.

The IRS has previously reminded those who may be entitled to the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020 that time is running out to file a tax return and claim their money. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable credit for individuals who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments, distributed in 2020 and 2021.

Plan to file? IRS offers options to get key documents

Gathering all the necessary documents and forms to file a return for 2020 may take some time. People should start as soon as possible to make sure they have enough time to file before the May 17 deadline for 2020 refunds. Here are some options:

  • Request copies of key documents. Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 for the years 2020, 2021 or 2022 can request copies from their employer, bank or other payers.
  • Use Get Transcript Online at IRS.gov. Taxpayers who have lost contact with their employer or other payers can order a free wage and income transcript at IRS.gov using the Get Transcript Online tool. For many taxpayers, this is by far the quickest and easiest option.
  • Request a transcript. Another option is for people to file Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return , with the IRS to request a “wage and income transcript.” A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns received by the IRS, such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098, Form 5498 and IRA contribution information. Taxpayers can use the information from the transcript to file their tax return. But plan ahead – these written requests can take several weeks; people are strongly urged to try the other options first.
  • Current and prior years’ tax forms. Tax year 2020 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR and instructions are available on the IRS.gov Forms, instructions & publications page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Taxpayers who are unsure if they are required to file a return can visit Do I need to file a tax return? or refer to Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) .

Free help is available

For individuals who have not filed a federal income a tax return for 2020, the IRS offers tools and resources on IRS.gov. Free support includes the Interactive Tax Assistant (ITA) , information on What to do if you haven’t filed your return , and Frequently asked questions and answers (FAQs) .

Qualified taxpayers can also access free tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs . Use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887 to locate the nearest VITA site.

The IRS also reassures taxpayers there is no penalty for claiming a refund on a late-filed tax return. Direct deposit is recommended as the quickest and simplest way to receive a tax refund.

State-by-state estimates of individuals who may be due 2020 income tax refunds
