The Royal Line

Sometimes a hero accepts themselves fully, but feels imposter syndrome, or the crushing feeling of failure as The American Psychological Association explains. Simba from The Lion King , Elsa from Frozen , and Tiana from The Princess and The Frog overcome their imposter syndrome. These characters also happen to be royalty, either by birth or marriage. As heirs to their respective thrones, Elsa and Simba have similar stories before ascending to the throne. Simba runs away from home as a cub after his father dies and spends years living in an oasis. When confronted with his birthright, he denies his right to the throne because he doesn’t want to face his father’s death. In Frozen , Elsa loses her parents, but she was in solitude long before they passed. She was born with powers that allowed her to make ice, but as a child, she unintentionally hurt her sister. When her powers are revealed at the reception of her coronation, she is finally free to be herself.

Unlike Simba and Elsa, Tiana is not born into royalty, although she does marry a prince. Before she marries a prince, she works as a waitress at two different restaurants. Tiana’s dream is to own her own restaurant, but the way to her dream is a road jam-packed with work. Even though her plan is derailed by being cursed as a frog, she realizes that fun and love have to be part of her dream. For Elsa and Simba, isolation only exacerbated their feelings of being unworthy. While Tiana’s overworking stifled her from making real connections with people.

Witches and Alchemists

Maleficent and the Sanderson sisters are some of the most famous witches in the Disney franchise. While witchcraft is often misconstrued by the public, many who call themselves witches today believe that love and happiness are more important than vengeance. In Maleficent , one of the most formidable Disney villains is written properly. She may have cursed Aurora out of anger, but as she was the one to watch over the princess growing up, Maleficent grew to love her.

The Sanderson sisters from the Hocus Pocus franchise also acted out of love, though their love for beauty seemed to be their priority. Yet, in the much anticipated sequel, when Winifred chooses ultimate power, she sacrifices the people she loves the most: her sisters, Sarah and Mary. Since she cannot reverse the spell, she gives a moving final soliloquy, revealing she only wanted power to protect her sisters.

While Emperor Kuzco in The Emperor’s New Groove wasn’t a witch, his advisor Yzma was a sort of scientist or alchemist. In her attempt to kill Kuzco, her assistant, Krunk, mixes up the poison with llama extract. Kuzco begins as an extremely selfish character who believes everyone loves him, except that no one truly knows him. But as a llama, he gets to know Pacha, who is the kindest man in the village. Through this friendship, Kuzco begins to see how selfish he is and becomes a better ruler because he made a true friend. In the cases of Maleficent, the Sanderson sisters, and Kuzco, they were able to be themselves through the love of people who are family by birth or through friendship.

Great adventures: five examples of a hero’s journey.

It’s the common thread woven throughout all storytelling. A lens that can be applied to any film or work of literature where each story will look the same. This arc of character and plot development is called the hero’s journey, and it’s everywhere.

In part one of this series , we learned what the hero’s journey is and the steps a character must take in order to fulfill their quest. We also learned that this story arc is relatable to us because our lives follow a similar pattern. If you still aren’t convinced that the hero’s journey permeates the fictional world, here are five great examples of a hero’s journey from different classics.

Spoiler Alert: If you are unfamiliar with any of these books or movies, skip them! We discuss the entirety of the story, including the end. 

Examples of a Hero’s Journey in Five Stories

This 2009 sci-fi blockbuster became the top-grossing film of all time just 47 days after it premiered. Its success is largely due to the incredible Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) characters and visual effects that are vibrantly convincing. Underlying messages and morals such as the importance of a peoples’ culture and land conservation accompany the film. While all of these elements play a role in the resounding praise of this film, there’s another reason people loved the film: the main character followed a typical hero’s journey.

Jake Sully starts out as a paraplegic former Marine. He is chosen to be a bodyguard for a research team on a search for a new energy source on the planet Pandora. While on their mission, Sully meets Neytiri, a native of Pandora, and is quickly accepted by her and her people. Sully is then faced with the moral choice to continue his work with the team he came with, and thus destroy the sacred native land, or join the native tribes and fight back against his own people. In the end, he helps save the land and its people and makes a permanent transition from his human body to the able-bodied avatar. 

Sully’s time on Pandora is the perfect example of a hero’s journey: 

• Separation: He is called to his adventure as a bodyguard, separating himself from his otherwise ordinary life
• Initiation: The initiation stage involves his meeting Neytiri and his introduction to her native tribe, and his moral dilemma of helping the natives of Pandora or staying with his team
• Return: His return is marked by the triumph of the natives. He returns to the tribe, physically changed from a human to one of their own, and mentally a new being with a new purpose

2. Marvel’s Spiderman

Another dominating movie franchise is Marvel’s The Avengers and the superhero spin-offs that it consists of. The movies have been a force to be reckoned with in the box office. However, each character had their start as a part of a comic book. Perhaps one of the most classic of this comic-book-hero-turned-movie-star is Spiderman.

The most recent adaptation of this beloved character is in the Marvel Avenger movies and the spin-off hits. In case there is any question that he is a hero, here is his journey in three steps:

• Separation: After the iconic spider bite, Peter Parker discovers his spider-like powers, prompting his new superhero life. He needs to adapt to life as a teenager with superpowers and fight crime at the same time
• Initiation: Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) and the other Avenger superheroes recruit him to help them in their battle against their extraterrestrial enemies
• Return: In the end, Spiderman returns as Peter Parker to his normal high school life, but is changed by the knowledge of his bigger responsibility as a superhero

Marvel’s Avenger version of Spiderman follows the classic hero’s journey, but we can see a major emphasis on the introduction of a mentor throughout Parker’s adventure. Iron Man serves as a father-like figure and helps Parker not only navigate his newfound superpowers but also how to harness them and use them for good. 

  3. The Wizard of Oz

A beloved novel-turned-film story that includes wicked witches, ruby slippers, and flying monkeys. This film is known for its brilliant use of color to separate real life from the fantasy world of Oz, as well as its iconic song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Dorothy’s journey, however, is different from other examples of a hero’s journey because she is a woman. (In part one we learned about the difference between a hero and heroine’s journey, and Dorothy’s yellow-brick-road path embodies a classic example.)

• Separation: After the twister drops her house in the magical land of Oz, and coincidentally on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, all Dorothy wants is to return home to Kansas
• Initiation: On her adventure, she meets three iconic friends, the scarecrow, the tin man, and the lion. They ultimately help her defeat her enemy, the Wicked Witch of the West and find the Emerald City 
• Return: Dorothy returns home to her family in Kansas only to realize she’s been on an incredible independent adventure

Like Spiderman, Dorothy also has a mentor: Glenda. She advises Dorothy to seek the Wizard of Oz at the end of the yellow brick road. 

The key to a heroine’s journey is overcoming society’s expectations of women . Dorothy does this several times throughout the film, like when she longs for adventure when the expectation is that she lives on her family’s farm. Or the expectation that her new, male friends will help her when she ultimately helps them. Finally, when Dorothy returns home on her own, proving she doesn’t need to rely on her uncles or anyone else to get what she wants.

The other stages of Dorothy’s quest make it one of the many examples of a hero’s journey, but it is this power that she finds as a woman that distinguishes her as a heroine.

4. To Kill A Mockingbird

This Pulitzer-Prize winning novel is at once a coming-of-age story and an attack of racism in the depression-ridden South. The main character and heroine, Scout Finch, grows up conflicted between how she feels and how other people think she should feel.

• Separation: When Atticus, Scout’s father, and a prominent lawyer, agrees to defend a black man in court, the implications are felt by the entire family. The two kids are alienated at school for their father’s decision
• Initiation: Their initiation stage takes up the bulk of the story. Atticus remains a prominent mentor to Scout and her conflicted societal views. The elusive Boo Radley remains a friend and helper although never showing his face. The conflict of this novel is woven throughout the story. Scout struggles to understand the racial views of those around her. There is also major discontent from the Maycomb townspeople surrounding Atticus’s decision to defend a black man
• Return: In the end, Scout finally puts a face to the name when Boo Radley saves her and her brother from a man who disapproved of their father’s case in court. She also realizes that regardless of what other people think, it’s better to do the right thing than cave into societal pressures

Scout can be seen as a heroine on her journey because she defies the expectations of her as a young girl. She also disregards what society thinks of her interactions with black people. She sees no problem with her father defending a black man in court. Although she can feel the discontent from those around her, Scout understands that a person deserves equal treatment despite their race, and she spends most of the novel making that point.

Disney characters and movies follow the hero’s journey.

• Separation: Aladdin lives as a poor “street-rat” until he fatefully meets the Genie in the Cave of Wonders. With the Genie’s help, Aladdin is transformed from poor bread-stealer to Prince Ali in order to win the heart of Princess Jasmine
• Initiation: Aladdin is confronted with not only Jafar, the hand to the Sultan but also the moral struggle of living a lie in order to impress the person he loves
• Return: In the end, Aladdin realizes no magical genie power can truly give him what he wants. After defeating Jafar, he admits to lying about who he is and why he felt he needed to be someone he wasn’t

The emphasis of the return in Aladdin’s hero journey is what is important. He met the Genie and was pushed into this magical adventure as Prince Ali. With the Genie at his side as his mentor, he is able to defeat Jafar, but he realizes the Genie can’t help him with everything. The lesson Aladdin learns about being himself in order to get what he wants is important. It proves that he has had what he needed all along—that is all he will ever need.

The Moral of the Story

From comic books to blockbusters, Pulitzer-Prize novels to classic films, these works have seen varying levels of success. Some were the biggest movies of all time and some were classic novels that are still read generations later. Despite the details in each piece, all of these stories follow the same narrative archetype—the arc of the hero’s journey.

These examples of a hero’s journey are five of many, but they are also proof that this story arc can be applied to any piece of film or literature. I encourage you to apply this arc to any and all of your favorite stories—including your own life.

How the Hero's Journey Became the Guiding Force in Disney Animation

Many of you are likely aware of the book, The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler. You might also be aware that it’s based on the writings of Joseph Campbell and it applies Campbell’s ideas on the Hero’s Journey to cinema in general and screenwriting specifically. Many of you may have even read Vogler’s book or Cambell’s writings, or both. But did you know that The Writer’s Journey started as an internal memo at Walt Disney Animation Studios while developing The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast ? It was meant as a guide for developing their stories into feature films, becoming required reading for Disney Feature’s creative executives, and was essentially their gospel for creating stories over the ensuing decade. The echoes of those principles ring just as loudly and clearly today across not only Disney but the entire animation storytelling landscape.

If you saw Alec Sokolow’s recent Stage 32 webinar on the Hero’s Journey , you would have learned that the journey is primarily about getting the character from one place to another, but not how you might initially think. Yes, in many movies, the character is going from one physical space to another, but the Hero’s Journey is most effective when it is an inner journey for the Hero. Whether that journey is taking the hero on an emotional journey or a journey of self-discovery, the most interesting Hero’s Journeys are the ones that change the character profoundly and noticeably.

Alec used his own experience in writing Toy Story (which netted him an Oscar nomination) as how that notion was effectively conveyed. Yes, both Woody and Buzz go on a physical journey in which they leave the Ordinary World of Andy’s bedroom and enter the Special World outside the house, including Pizza Planet and Syd’s house. In those places, they experience the stages of Tests, Allies and Enemies, The Approach, and The Supreme Ordeal. But in the second act, those stages do more than just advance the story. They also develop Woody and Buzz as characters, motivating each of them to grow and change by the end in a way that was satisfying to the audience. Anyone interested in writing and storytelling, be it live-action or animation, has been inundated with the idea of 3-act structure, where your first act is 25-30 pages, your second act is 50-60 pages, and your third act is 25-30 pages. The first act represents the exposition, the second act represents the conflict, and the third act represents the resolution. That’s can feel like a daunting number of pages and a rigid structure in which to fit your story. Sokolow even said in his webinar that he often struggles with the second act because it’s so long and so much has to happen.

But, if you were to think of your story in the 12 stages of the Hero’s Journey rather than in three full acts, it becomes more palatable, especially when you put the stages of the journey alongside where they go inside of the 3-act structure. This is especially true when writing an animated story that needs to be followed by audiences of all ages.

Now, let's see how we can apply these steps to an animated story...

Whenever I’m writing anything, I always start by using those stages as an outline. To borrow a phrase from animation, think of it as keyframing. Each of the steps in the Hero’s Journey is a keyframe, and then once you have those, all you need to do is the in-betweening, filling out the details that get you from one stage of the journey to the next. This way, the structure doesn’t seem so rigid, and the amount of writing is less daunting. In fact, the structure is assisting you in developing a cohesive and coherent story.

When I was studying animation at USC, one of my instructors had been a character animator and storyboard artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios, and he told us a story about the development of Beauty and the Beast . They were struggling with the story until Jeffrey Katzenberg told them they were approaching it from the wrong direction. The story team was developing the story from Belle’s point of view, and Katzenberg told them that it was the Beast’s point of view that was driving the story. It was the Beast who was the one who needed to change. He needed to go from “spoiled, selfish, and unkind” to someone who had “learned to love and could be loved in return.”

Beauty and the Beast is a story that does so many things well in creating drama. It gives us a character with a clear need who will struggle to meet that need because he starts out the story unwilling to change. It gives us a ticking clock for when that need must be met in the form of the petals falling from the rose. And it gives us a clear consequence if the need isn’t met in that he will remain a beast forever. The Hero’s Journey plays an integral role in progressing the story and in organically bringing about change in the Beast.

Ordinary World – The Beast lives alone in an enchanted castle. Call to Adventure – Maurice arrives seeking help. Refusal – The Beast locks him in the tower. Meeting the Mentor – Belle arrives searching for Maurice. Crossing the First Threshold – Belle takes Maurice’s place as the Beast’s prisoner.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies – The Beast tells Belle she can go anywhere she wants except the West Wing; Belle refuses to eat dinner with him; he tells the servants that if she doesn’t eat with him, she doesn’t eat at all; the magic mirror shows him an image of Belle telling one of the enchanted servants that she doesn’t want anything to do with him. Approach – Belle wanders into the West Wing. The Beast catches her there and flies into a rage, causing Belle to run away and leave the castle. Supreme Ordeal – Belle is attacked by wolves, and the Beast rescues her but is injured, and Belle uses her horse to carry him back to the castle. Reward – Belle nurses the Beast back to health; the Beast shows Belle (a book lover) his massive library; they start to eat together. Belle says she’s happy, but she wishes she could see her father again.

The Road Back – The Beast shows Belle the magic mirror that shows Maurice searching for Belle in the woods, sick and possibly dying. The Beast, now able to love, allows Belle to go to him. She takes Maurice home, but the jealous Gaston finds out about the Beast and rallies the villagers to go kill him. Resurrection – The villagers attack the castle. The Beast won’t fight, but the enchanted servants repel the attack. Only Gaston gets to the Beast’s lair and is about to kill him until the Beast sees Belle has returned. He fights off Gaston, and it seems as though Belle and the Beast will be reunited until Gaston stabs the Beast before falling to his death. Belle professes her love for the Beast as he draws his last breath and the last petal falls from the rose. Having learned to love and earned the love of another, the Beast is resurrected and transforms back into a human. Return with the Elixir – Belle and the (now human) Beast dance in the ballroom, seemingly to live happily ever after.

It's clear in Beauty and the Beast that the Hero’s Journey not only moved the story forward but it motivated the change that the Beast had to go through. That’s one of the many things that the Hero’s Journey does for the writer. It allows for the story progression and character development to happen in tandem with each other. All of the pieces work together to create a dramatic arc that makes this film so successful.

That is one of the reasons that the Hero’s Journey works so well in animated features. The best-animated features are about characters and how those characters need to change. Whether it’s the Beast needing to learn to love; Hiccup ( How to Train Your Dragon ) needing to prove to himself that brains are as important as brawn; or whether it’s about Mirabel needing to find value in what makes her different ( Encanto ); or it’s about Woody and Buzz accepting that their places in the world are not what they thought they were ( Toy Story ); or whether it’s Rick accepting his daughter for who she is ( The Mitchells vs. The Machines ), animation is at its best when its heroes are flawed characters who learn and grow. The Hero’s Journey is the best way to make that happen.

What To Watch On Disney+ | Hero’s Journeys

There are hundreds of movies and shows available on Disney+, many of them featuring stories of heroes taking epic journeys, often having to leave home, alone or with friends, battling enemies and triumphing over evil.  In this watch list, there are many different movies and shows that showcase a hero on one of these epic journeys.

Beauty and the Beast

This classic animated hit is one of the most popular Disney movies for a generation. It follows the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman who finds herself in the castle of a prince who’s been turned into a mysterious beast. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, Belle soon learns the most important lesson of all — that true beauty comes from within. And there is also a live action version featuring Emma Watson available, should you want to double dip!

Captain America

During World War II, Steve Rogers is a sickly man from Brooklyn who’s transformed into super-soldier Captain America to aid in the war effort. Rogers must stop the Red Skull – Adolf Hitler’s ruthless head of weaponry, and the leader of an organization that intends to use a mysterious device of untold powers for world domination.

Doctor Strange

Dr. Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

Finding Nemo

When a young clownfish called Nemo, is unexpectedly taken from his Great Barrier Reef home to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to his worrisome father Marlin and a friendly but forgetful fish Dory to bring Nemo home — meeting vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more along the way. It’s a classic Pixar movie that is always enjoyable to watch. And if you love this, check out its sequel Finding Dory.

Quite possibly one of the most scariest movies available on Disney+, this Oscar winning documentary tells follows Alex Honnold as he attempts to become the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite’s 3,000 foot high El Capitan wall. This one will have you watching through your hands as he climbs with no ropes or safety gear, in what would arguably be the greatest feat in rock climbing history.

Disney tackles Greek mythology in this animated feature. Hercules (Tate Donovan), a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. With his plucky satyr sidekick, Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), along for the ride, Hercules must learn how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures.

Plagued with worry and insomnia since saving New York from destruction, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), now, is more dependent on the suits that give him his Iron Man persona — so much so that every aspect of his life is affected, including his relationship with Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow). After a malevolent enemy known as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) reduces his personal world to rubble, Tony must rely solely on instinct and ingenuity to avenge his losses and protect the people he loves.

Easily one of my favourite modern animated movies and sees Moana answer the oceans call, taking to the seas to save her people from a terrible curse. The movie features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the Demigod Maui and his character really adds some great comedy moments. Moana delivers a awesome soundtrack including “Your Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go”.

National Treasure

Historian and code-breaker Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) has been searching his whole life for a rumored treasure dating back to the creation of the United States. Joining an expedition led by fellow treasure hunter Ian Howe (Sean Bean), Gates finds an ice-locked Colonial ship in the Arctic Circle that contains a clue linking the treasure to the Declaration of Independence. But when Howe betrays him, Gates has to race to get to the document ahead of his so-called colleague.

Pixar’s latest animated smash, Onward, is set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest to spend one day with their late father. This is a lovely story and will no doubt leave you wiping away the tears.

Primal Survival

Star Wars: A New Hope

The Imperial Forces — under orders from cruel Darth Vader (David Prowse) — hold Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) hostage, in their efforts to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) to rescue the beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy.

The Lion King

The original animated classic is still my favourite Disney movie of all time, the music is amazing and iconic. It’s one of Disney’s most unique animated classics, that tells the story of a young lion cub named Simba, who just can’t wait to be king. But his uncle Scar, craves the title for himself and will stop at nothing to get it, leading to Simba being banished from his home, only to return years later when his pride need him.  Or check out the 2019 version if you haven’t already.

The Muppet Movie

After Kermit the Frog decides to pursue a movie career, he starts his cross-country trip from Florida to California. Along the way, he meets and befriends Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and rock musicians Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. When Kermit is offered a job by Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) to advertise the fried frog legs at his restaurant chain, Kermit turns Hopper down. However, Hopper refuses to relent and pursues Kermit and his companions to a final showdown.

The Princess Bride

In this enchantingly cracked fairy tale, the beautiful Princess Buttercup and the dashing Westley must overcome staggering odds to find happiness amid six-fingered swordsmen, murderous princes, Sicilians and rodents of unusual size. But even death can’t stop these true lovebirds from triumphing.

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that they’re worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy.

Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl’s worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house.

10 Good Movie Examples Showing the Hero’s Journey

The Hero’s Journey is an old literary device that appears in a wide variety of stories throughout human history. As such, it has also featured in many popular films since the dawn of cinema.

Although there are some deviations, the hero’s journey usually consists of a cyclical story with some main narrative beats. An ordinary person receives a call to adventure that requires them to leave their known, comfortable life for the unknown. They may refuse this call, but they soon reach a threshold where they need to answer it, which begins their transformation over the course of the story. They then set out on their journey, typically with the aid of a helper and/or mentor. They face challenges and temptations before experiencing a revelation that results in growth and change. The hero then atones and confronts the final conflict. At last, they are rewarded for their efforts and return to a known existence.

The following are ten films in a variety of genres that serve as great examples of the hero’s journey. Given the nature of this subject as an entire narrative story arc, do note that spoilers may be discussed for all films below.

Movie Examples Showing the Hero’s Journey

With the help of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, he learns the ways of the Jedi, an ancient order of mystical knights. Throughout the story, Luke transforms into a Jedi Knight and true hero. The original film, released in 1977, was an instant sensation that changed the art of filmmaking forever.

Struggling with the guilt of a command decision he made that saw his entire squadron destroyed, Ted is forced to grapple with his fears and take control of the plane when the flight crew becomes incapacitated due to bad fish. Well-known for throwing silly jokes at the audience non-stop, Airplane! has earned its reputation as one of the funniest films ever made.

He is sent to the alien world of Pandora as part of a program to put human beings in control of artificial bodies of the indigenous Na’vi that can survive in the planet’s environment. Mufasa: The Lion King – “Music comes first” Philosophy Almost Made Barry Jenkins Reject it as a Musical

A prequel story to 2019’s Disney live-action movie, The Lion King , is upon us. The movie tells us the story of Mufasa, Simba’s father, and his journey to become the king of the jungle. Mufasa: The Lion King will be helmed by director Barry Jenkins of Moonlight fame, unlike Jon Favreau, who directed the 2019 feature, with Donald Glover and Beyoncé returning to voice Simba and Nala, respectively.

For the Oscar winner, this Walt Disney production was quite different from the kind of movies he usually makes. And if not for Jeff Nathanson’s script, which had him hooked from the beginning, Jenkins could have almost said no to the project.

Barry Jenkins Almost Said No To Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King will have music from Nicholas Britell with Hans Zimmer and Williams returning after The Lion King. Lin-Manual Miranda will write the original songs for the movie and director Barry Jenkins is pretty excited to share this with the Hamilton star, whom he once wanted to cast for his movie If Beale Street Could Talk .

Jenkins says that he was initially hesitant to take on the movie because of it being a musical. The idea that music comes first and the story comes second was not something he wanted to work with. Speaking of finding that balance and how Miranda was a help in reaching that point, Jenkins told Empire :

“We wanted to really find a balance of symbiosis between the music and the film. Lin really leaned in and tried to find the places that myself and Jeff Nathanson, the writer of the script, had tried to go deeper into the background of some of these characters in this film. He did a really, really wonderful job, and he and I already had something of a rapport.”

Mufasa Director Barry Jenkins Praises Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Who Wrote The Lion King Prequel’s Songs: “He did a really, really wonderful job”

The 2019 movie had an amazing soundtrack, with some really great vocals adding to the tunes, whether new or nostalgic. We are sure, the upcoming feature will have the same effect.

Fans Will Miss The Original Mufasa

While Glover and Beyonce are returning to voice Simba and Nala, one person, whose voice will be tremendously missed, is that of James Earl Jones . Jones voiced Mufasa in the animated Disney productions, as well as in the Jon Favreau-directed live-action, The Lion King . Unfortunately, the incredible actor will not be returning to voice the protagonist of the story.

The task of voicing the young Mufasa has fallen on the shoulders of the English actor, Aaron Pierre. Pierre has previously worked with Jenkins in The Underground Railroad (2021) and is teaming up with the director once more to join the Disney family, to voice such an iconic character. 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (1954)

After 65 years, Disney’s first live-action mega-hit still stands up as Sunday-afternoon fare. That’s partly down to the cast – James Mason as Nemo, with Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre also on board – and partly the amazing sets, including the creation of Nemo’s steam-punk submarine, the Nautilus, complete with full pipe organ. Most of it was filmed on set – (three different ones, to be precise –) but not to be ignored are the location trips. For landing on the cannibal island, the production visited Negril Bay in Jamaica (then a remote and unknown fringe, without even a proper road), also using the Xtabi park nearby for the cave sequences at Nemo’s base. Most impressive, though, are the underwater scenes, including an underwater burial and shark attack in diving suits, filmed with a crew of 400 at Lyford Cay, off Nassau in the Bahamas. Amazingly, it turned out to be the very same spot that the 1916 silent-movie version chose when filming the first underwater shoot on record.

HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY (1963)

A children’s favourite for decades after its release, this tale of a labrador, bull terrier and Siamese cat finding their way home is a triumph of animal-wrangling and landscape photography. The original book was set in Canada, in north-west Ontario, and indeed some of the filming takes place there: the film begins with an aerial view of the village of Aspdin and neighbouring Lake Vernon. The family home is in Mono Mills, to the south-west near Toronto, close by the hermit’s cabin (in Palgrave) and the farm (Glen Cross) where the animals find temporary shelter. However, much of the action was shot across the border in the heavily wooded national parks of the north-western US, including Smith Rock State Park in Oregon and Olympic in Washington, taking in such evocatively named landmarks such as Wahclella Falls and Devils Lake.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE (2005)

For this grand adaptation of CS Lewis’s fantasy classic, Disney headed to New Zealand and Eastern Europe. There are a few sequences in the novel’s setting of England, as we see the Pevensie children on a train journey on the Severn Valley Railway, but the Professor’s house where they stay is near Auckland . It’s Pah Homestead, Hillsborough – at least, the gardens are, with the house added with CGI, a construction based on Kentwell Hall in Sudbury, seen in the 1996 The Wind In The Willows (1996) and Hammer horror The Witchfinder General (1968). Other NZ locations are mainly on the South Island: Aslan’s Camp is Elephant Rocks, near Duntroon; the final battle is on Flock Hill, north of Christchurch; and the Great Castle of Cair Paravel is at Purakaunui Bay. For winter scenes the production headed to the Czech Republic, first to the Adrsšpach nature reserve National Park on the Polish border, then west to the eerie natural sandstone towers of Tiské Stěeny, overlooking the village of Tisa, for the scenes of Lucy going to Mr Tumnus’s home.

JOHN CARTER (2012)

This sci-fi spectacular took a bit of a pasting but it’s hard to see why – it’s great escapist adventure fun, with some fine otherworldly locations. Before we reach Mars, where our hero is mysteriously transported, there’s a quick visit to Surrey, with Ham House standing in for Carter’s dilapidated New York mansion, but then we’re in the spooky deserts of southern Utah. Our hero first arrives in the West Desert, near Hanksville, while the giant red cliffs are at Big Water, one of the last regions to be mapped in the continental USA. When we see him on the River Iss, that’s Lake Powell , a giant reservoir that was used for the opening crash-landing sequence in Planet of the Apes (1968). Other landmarks used include the sandstone stacks of Fisher Towers near Moab, and Shiprock in New Mexico, a jagged volcanic rock formation whose distinctive silhouette has been seen on screen in films from My Darling Clementine (1946) to Natural Born Killers (1994).

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (2003-2011)

These rollicking pirate yarns have much to commend them, from laughs and action to some gorgeous scenery. The first in the series, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), set sail from St Vincent in the Grenadines, where Port Royal harbour was constructed at Wallilabou Bay, while the desert island where Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are abandoned is Petit Tabac, to the south. For Dead Man’s Chest (2006), we’re mostly a few nautical miles north on Dominica, including Titou Gorge in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park for the perilous imprisonment of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Capucin Point for the mill with its runaway wheel, but Sparrow’s psychedelic limbo sequence in Davy Jones’s Locker is in the deserts of Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. For 2011’s comeback, On Stranger Tides , there’s a trip to London played by the reliable Greenwich Naval College before the action moves to Hawaii , including the island of Kauai’s Allerton Garden, used in Jurassic Park , and the Honopu Arch, accessible only by sea.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1993)

This Nineties reboot of the swashbuckling saga has Chris O’Donnell as D’Artagnan and Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen riding alongside. It’s filmed not in France but Austria , though there seem to be more than enough castles to do the job. For the Palace of Versailles, we’re in the actual Hofburg Palace in Vienna, home to the Habsburg dynasty and now the seat of government. We also see the 17th-century Schloss Petronell to the east as the musketeers’ base, and wonderfully medieval Burg Liechtenstein in Maria Enzersdorf, where cannons are fired at our heroes. Interspersed with this are scenes shot closer to home in Cornwall , including a woodland chase through Golitha Falls Reserve near Liskeard, the fairytale-castle -Victorian Lanhydrock House near Bodmin and dock scenes at Charlestown, a screen favourite seen in Taboo , Poldark , Alice in Wonderland (2010) and The Eagle Has Landed (1976).

INTO THE WOODS (2014)

This star-studded film version of Sondheim’s musical was based at Shepperton Studios but spent a remarkable amount of screentime outdoors. The woods are mostly Windsor Great Park, while the UK village where all the fairytales are set is Hambleden in Buckinghamshire, a picturesque place with a CV that rivals that of the film’s star, Meryl Streep: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Witches (1990), Sleepy Hollow (1999), HBO’s Band of Brothers (2001), Nanny McPhee Returns (2010) and last year’s Good Omens . Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) lives in Byfleet Manor, West Byfleet, seen in Downton Abbey as the home of Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), and is married in Dover Castle; Rapunzel (MacKkenzie Mauzy) is imprisoned in a CGI-ed Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, whose 13thth-century ruins also appear in Hot Fuzz (2007) and 28 Days Later… (2002). For the duetting princes (Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen), meanwhile, we’re back in Windsor, by the man-made waterfall of Virginia Water, the Cascades.

SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON (1960)

One of George Lucas’s favourite films and a huge influence on Star Wars , this was another Disney classic that reproduced exotic locations in the handily placed Caribbean , this time on Tobago. The treehouse was positioned in a 200ft samaan tree near Goldsborough Bay – it was left there after the shoot but only lasted a couple of years before strong winds brought it down. The main beach seen is the tiny Richmond Bay, just along the coast, while a little further on is Belle Garden Bay, used for the shipwreck landing that brings the family onto the island. The waterfall where they swing on vines is Craig Hall, near Moriah in the island’s centre, while the pirates attack at Mount Irvine Bay on the west coast, close to Pigeon Point, the venue for the swamp where two of the boys are attacked by a 22ft anaconda – for which, incredibly, a real snake was used.

James Earl Jones voiced Mufasa in both the 1994 original film and 2019 remake. Jeremy Irons voiced Scar in 1994, while Chiwetel Ejiofor took over in 2019.

It was also revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda is penning the film’s songs, produced by himself and Mark Mancina, with additional music and performances by Lebo M.

Considered one of Disney’s most successful properties, the original 1994 “Lion King” grossed $960 million worldwide, with the 2019 version grossing $1.6 billion at the global box office. The remake was also named one of Variety’s Critic’s Picks in 2019. In his review, chief film critic Peter Debruge wrote , “If you were never a fan of ‘The Lion King,’ then nothing here will win you over. 'Star Wars: The Bad Batch' (2021-2024)

'X-Men '97' (2024-)

Few movie studios are as famous for making sequels as Disney. There are 33 movies in its Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has made three big screen sequels to Star Wars and Frozen will return for a third time in 2026. If a movie makes more than a billion Dollars at the box office it's unlikely Disney will let it go. With one notable exception.

Only one of Disney's entries in the 30 highest-grossing films of all time is not a sequel or doesn't have a sequel. Remarkably, analysis of more than a thousand pages of company filings has revealed that it is one of the most profitable movies in the studio's 100-year history.

Much has been made of the magic touch that Disney has got from the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars creator Lucasfilm. However, those deals came with blockbuster purchase prices and, as we have revealed , the movie profits have yet to cover that cost in the case of Lucasfilm.

In contrast, another of Disney's theatrical divisions has generated $9.7 billion at the box office. It has cast a powerful spell on its bottom line and its origins date right back to the late 1800s.

In 1894 English novelist Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book , a tale of a human boy named Mowgli who was brought up by animals. It spawned the 1967 animated hit produced by Walt Disney Walt Disney Walt Disney himself but that was just the start. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the book, Disney made a live action version of the story starring some big names including Sam Neill, Cary Elwes, John Cleese and Jason Scott Lee in the role of Mowgli.

According to industry analyst Box Office Mojo, it grossed a respectable $52.4 million but the biggest impact it had was proving that the concept worked. It opened the door to a whole new world for Disney and led to a straight-to-video sequel as well as two films based on 1961's 101 Dalmatians . They grossed a total of $504.3 million and set the stage for Disney to build an entire division dedicated to developing live action remakes of its classic cartoons.

It took around a decade for Disney to get going and there was good reason why it eventually pushed the button. It was reported that Disney's desire to remake its classic cartoons was driven by the expiry of the copyright to the characters in them, meaning it didn’t need to spend a Cent in acquiring the franchise. Bambi , Peter Pan and Winnie-the-Pooh have already fallen into the public domain leading to a spate of copycat productions including horror flick, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey .

Disney's live action remakes reset the dial by giving a new generation of viewers new versions of the characters to relate to. True as this may be, it isn't the only driving force behind the trend.

The first live action remake in Disney's modern era was Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in 2010. Its star-studded cast featured Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Alan Rickman and Johnny Depp, fresh from his success in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean series. Against all expectations, the movie grossed a staggering $1 billion on a budget of just $153.1 million (£122.5 million).

The amount of the box office that studios receive was revealed in research from film industry consultant Stephen Follows who interviewed 1,235 film professionals in 2014 and concluded that, according to studios, theaters keep 49% of the takings on average.

This gives a split of roughly 50-50 between the theaters and studios so Disney ended up with an estimated $512.7 million from Alice in Wonderland . This yielded a $359.6 million profit on its box office takings and a 2.4x Return On Investment (ROI). To this day it is believed to be the highest ROI of any Disney movie grossing more than a billion Dollars. Even the mighty Avengers: Endgame , the second-highest grossing movie in history, pales in comparison.

Movie budgets are usually a closely guarded secret as studios tend to absorb the cost of individual films in their overall expenses and don't itemize the cost of each one. However, films shot in the United Kingdom are exceptions to this rule and Endgame was one of them. It was made by Disney subsidiary Assembled Productions III which was also behind its prequel Avengers: Infinity War .

The two movies made a staggering $4.85 billion at the box office but came with a mighty price tag. The financial statements for Assembled Productions III show that $1.27 billion was spent on production but it doesn't stop there.

Studios filming in the UK benefit from its Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit which gives them a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the money they spend in the country. It comes with a catch.

To qualify for the reimbursement, movies must pass a points test based on factors such as how many members of the production team are from the UK and how much of the post-production work is done in the UK. Furthermore, at least 10% of the core costs of the production need to relate to activities in the UK and in order to demonstrate this to the government, studios set up separate companies to make each movie.

These companies are responsible for everything from pre-production to delivery of the movie and paying for services relating to the finished film. Crucially, they have to file financial statements and this shines a spotlight on the costs of making movies.

Assembled Productions III got a $43.1 million (£34.5 million) reimbursement bringing its net spending down to $1.22 billion. Disney got $2.4 billion of the box office from the two movies giving it a $1.2 billion profit. It spent the same amount on making them giving it a 1x ROI whereas Alice In Wonderland had more than double that in 2010 thanks to its much lower budget.

Unsurprisingly, Disney gave the green light to a sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass , which debuted in 2016 and only grossed $299.8 million giving Disney an $8 million loss on the box office. It didn't stop a stream of live action remakes from being made as several were already in production.

Since 2010, Disney has released 16 live action remakes and 12 of them were made in the UK generating more than $1.7 billion of profit as shown in the chart below. The one omission is Robert Zemeckis' version of Pinocchio which didn't generate any box office takings as it was released on the Disney+ streaming platform which offers subscribers access to all of the Mouse's content for a single fee.

The profits of Disney's UK-based live action movies

The biggest of the four productions which weren't made in the UK is the 2019 remake of The Lion King which grossed $1.7 billion and is getting a prequel called Mufasa later this year. In contrast, as the chart shows, the movie which made by far the highest profit is neither a sequel, nor does it have a sequel.

That movie is Beauty and the Beast , the live action version of the 1991 Oscar-winner. Released in 2017, it follows the plot of the cartoon as Emma Watson’s character Belle falls in love with a prince played by Dan Stevens, who is under a curse which makes him look like a vicious beast. Its profits are just as spellbinding as the story.

The movie was made by Disney subsidiary Cogsworth Productions which is named after one of its stars - a computer-generated carriage clock voiced by Ian McKellen. Many of the scenes were shot in front of a green screen at Shepperton Studios near London so that visual effects could be added in during post-production by British firm Framestore.

Other key expenses include equipment hire, travel and staff with the movie's total costs coming to $271.2 million (£216.9 million) – more than $110 million higher than Deadline estimated .

One of the biggest single costs was the wage bill which hit $15 million (£12 million). The crew peaked at 203 people without even including freelancers and self-employed workers who make up the vast majority of personnel on a movie.

This economic impact explains why the UK government offers such generous fiscal incentives for studios to film there and the filings reveal that Cogsworth Productions received a total reimbursement of $52.2 million (£41.7 million) bringing Disney's net spending on the movie to $219 million. Its box office haul more than covered this cost.

Beauty and the Beast grossed $1.27 billion giving Disney an estimated $633 million share. That yields a profit of $414 million and a 1.9x ROI based on its $219 million net spend.

This calculation shows how much profit the movie made at the box office and excludes DVD and Blu Ray sales as well as licensing and merchandising. However, it is also believed to exclude marketing costs which often exceed these ancillary revenue streams. Indeed, it is usually impossible to allocate precise marketing spend to specific pictures as publicity staff work on multiple movies at the same time. Beauty and the Beast was a dream ticket for them.

The movie scored 71% with critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes whilst audiences awarded it 80%. There was no shortage of interest in a sequel and Watson herself even endorsed it in a 2017 interview with Access Hollywood .

"I would love to do a sequel," she said, adding "I always thought that Belle would become a teacher and she would run a library in the castle and open it up to the village. This was where I was going." Mysteriously, Disney had other ideas.

At the time, Sean Bailey, then president of Walt Disney Pictures, told Deadline there was no plan for a sequel and the studio didn't want to force one. No explanation was given though the publication speculated that it could be because Alice Through The Looking Glass was a box office bust. Bailey did however say that Disney would explore possible prequel and spinoffs and it was no exaggeration.

Over the following years, Disney began development of a prequel streaming series centered on the movie's hapless villains Gaston and LeFou, played by Luke Evans and Josh Gad respectively. However, in February 2022 The Wrap reported that it had been "delayed indefinitely' after facing a number of creative and scheduling issues.

Later in the year Evans was more optimistic and told Entertainment Weekly that it had been "put on hold." He added that "it is gonna happen. We're very excited about it. At some point in the near future, it will happen." Evans explained that the delay was because Disney wants to "make sure that it is absolutely the best it can be, and if that means we just have to wait a little longer to finesse certain pieces of it, then that's what we're going to do because this is a very important legacy."

It is now nearly two years later and the prequel is still nowhere to be seen. It can't come soon enough.

In recent years, the format has floundered as audiences have become tired of seeing remakes and object to an overuse of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). Lady and the Tramp's canine protagonists were described as having "glassy, expressionless eyes" whilst Vox was even more cutting about the CGI fish in last year's remake of The Little Mermaid .

"Their tiny mouths are contorted in unnatural ways," it said . "It's as though there’s almost something sinister hiding underneath the computerized animal skin — and that's even before they start singing and dancing."

As we revealed , The Little Mermaid made a profit of around $40 million on its box office though that was based on its $304.4 million (£243.5 million) costs to the end of August 2022 which was eight months before the movie was released. As it was effects-heavy, its budget will have swelled before then in post-production possibly pushing the picture into a loss. Now more than ever, the format needs a white knight to rescue it or a happy ending could be far, far away.
