Fabulous Cruise -- Around The Sound!

Three days ago we took the Around The Sound Tour and enjoyed the benefit of seeing both Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in one full day - meaning we were on ferries three times. The staff was friendly and helpful. The Bloody Marys were killer and not overpriced considering the setting. The only thing I might have changed is that we visited Nantucket and then Martha's Vineyard. We wanted to tour Martha's Vineyard, but upon arrival at 4:30 found out all tours were done for the day. We were adventurous and took a bus to Edgartown and really enjoyed the quiet and beautiful town. Had we known the tours at the Vineyard ended so early, we may have visited the Vineyard and then Nantucket. Both islands are quite unique. Nantucket was quaint and charming while Martha's Vineyard was more of a party town. We had lunch at Rose and Crown in Nantucket - delicious fish and chips and clam chowder! We enjoyed the sunset and open air bars in the Vineyard. $77 for all this is a BARGAIN.

Hyline does offer a high speed ferry, but on holidays, sunny day, Cape Cod, we took the slow boat! Parking, ferry and then a tour on the island was easily booked by phone and they even offered a CAA/AAA discount! Staff were friendly, the ferry on time and it made for a nice day. Plan an all day 8am-6pm for this one and enjoy! Limited food and beverage/bar service was available on board as was indoor and outdoor seating.

Awesome! I caught my first fish! A 2-3 foot long blue fish! Every one on the entire boat caught at least one, most caught 2-3. One guy caught 5. Crew was awesome helping the beginners, etc. helpful hint - close toe shoes!

We had a real good fishing trip me and my 12 year old son. The crew was helpful and we caught lots of fish. The boat was clean (for a fishing boat). I would definitely go back.

Not much to see. You can't get close enough to see any of the places, It takes 25 minutes to get there 10 minutes to hear the narration of the Kennedy Compound area and 25 minutes to return I thought it wasn't worth 17.00 per person

We took the Ferry to M.V. from Hyannis. The crew was hospitable and pleasant. The Ferry took 90 mins to reach the Vineyard. It has a snack bar, beverages, & restrooms, too. It was a good day.

Around the Sound cruise

Took the Around the Sound cruise from Hy-line. Boarded in Hyannis, chose to go to Nantucket first. Spent 4 hours on the island of Nantucket then Boarded and headed off to spend 6 hours on Martha's Vinyard. Then returned to Hyannis. The ferry was on time for every ride. Ferry was comfortable, the experience was well worth the cost. Take a professional tour of each island if you have never been to them. The crew on the ferry were very friendly, yet professional.

We booked our tickets online for the Hy-line for transport between Hyannis and Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The website was confusing. We had to phone the ticket office for help. Due to the hurricane, the service for the ferry was suspended for a few days. They called us to let us know of the suspension of the service and did change our ticket to another day. That caused some real confusion when we went to check in for parking. We had to go to the ticket office and have a staff member come out to explain we had paid for parking. We called in a couple of times to check on the service. At one point, they asked who was calling when they answered the phone. It was not, "This is the Hy-line Ferry, how may we help you?" In fact not anything close. Make certain to get there early. We arrived an hour early and we're glad we did. There was a line to get in to park, and the line to board the ferry was quite long. Also, since there were some issues with our parking, we had to stand in line to resolve our parking issues. This is quite the operation and really hectic as people are driving in to park to take the ferry As you pull In to check in, they will help you offload any luggage you are taking. They put it on a cart to load on the the ferry so you grab your bags as you leave the ferry when you disembark. Seating is not assigned. You select a seat that is available when you board. They do operate in a timely manner, and bathrooms are available on the ferry.

We did this tour as part of a shore excursion from a cruise. The boat was comfortable and the narration was excellent. Very good views of the homes including those on the Kennedy compound. Certainly worth the time. We were early for the sailing, so we hung out in some very comfortable Adirondack chairs until it was ready to go. I believe you will really enjoy this trip. Hope this is helpful to you.

The ferry boat ride went very smoothly. The people on the boat were great. The people that checked you in were grouchy. When you pull up you must make a decision instantaneously of if you want to park in their lot. Decide right now! We decided to park in their lot. When paying for parking, they said their parking lot was a 100 yards walk back to the boat. 300 yards walk to where they had me park is accurate.

Beautiful- I've never seen the Kennedy compound from the water before and it was gorgeous! Our tour guide was great and sunset was stunning from the water- make sure you sit on the right side of the boat when leaving the Harbor! It was $17 a person but many Cape Cod books have coupons for this!

The boat ride is fun by itself. The Narrator really explains the history and development of Hyannis harbor. AS we left the harbor and came to the are within view of the Kennedy Compound she explained who lived in which building. She also knew the other surrounding houses pretty well. We had a great time. We want to do it again.

Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority: Nantucket’s Lifeline to the Main Land

Nantucket Living

One of our favorite ways to get to and from Nantucket is by way of a ferry. Ease into island time and take in breathtaking ocean views as you make your way across Nantucket Sound and into the heart of Nantucket. When planning your trip, you will find that two main ferry companies offer service to and from the island; the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises . Both companies offer hour-long fast ferry options from Hyannis, while the Steamship Authority additionally offers a traditional car ferry with a crossing time of just over two hours.

Hy-Line Cruises

Hy-Line Cruises operates two boats on their Hyannis to Nantucket route, the Grey Lady and Grey Lady IV . The Grey Lady has operated as a year-round ferry since 2003 and features two levels of seating, including an outdoor area on the top level for taking in ocean views as you cross the water. Hy-Line Cruises’ newest ferry acquisition, Grey Lady IV , is a 150’ 3-level boat with two areas of outdoor seating and the new “Captain’s View” – an exclusive seating section inside on the second level. Each ferry has a layout that mixes rows of individual seats with group seating and options with tables. Also equipped with free Wi-Fi, TVs for entertainment, full-service snack bars, and restrooms, a trip on either ferry offers plenty of amenities for your traveling comfort.

Nantucket Ferries Steamship Authority

Steamship Authority

The Steamship Authority provides ferry passage to Nantucket for everything from travelers to vehicles carrying supplies that keep the busy island moving. The ferry that is often used when bringing your vehicle to Nantucket, the M/V Eagle, is commonly referred to as the “car ferry” or the “slow boat.” The lower level of the M/V Eagle is reserved for vehicles that load on one end and depart on the other, while the upper-level features seating for 768 people, including passengers and crew. Rounding out the passenger level are a full-service snack bar, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, as well as restrooms. For those looking for “fast ferry” service to the island, the M/V Iyanough is the Steamship Authority’s passenger-only option. The 154’ boat carries up to 400 people and has three levels, an outdoor seating area, free Wi-Fi access, and flat-screen TVs throughout the interior. Other amenities on the M/V Iyanough include a snack bar featuring beer, wine, and mixed drinks, as well as a variety of hot and cold menu items to choose from.

The Nantucket ferry schedules change with the seasons. Your best bet for accurate schedules is to check the individual company websites or nantucketferries.com , which is updated with the most current ferry schedule for both the Hy-Line and Steamship.

captiains View hyline nantucket ferry

On the newer Hy-Line ferry, Grey Lady IV, passengers are given the option to upgrade to Captain’s View seating. The Captain’s View upgrade is limited to 32 passengers and allows you to pre-board the ferry and enjoy a designated seating section with the only forward-facing view off the front of the boat.

The Steamship Authority offers eFerry ticketing granting you a way to book your tickets conveniently through your phone.

Regardless of which ferry you choose for your journey to and from Nantucket, be sure to toss a penny overboard as you depart. Local legend has it that if you toss a penny into the harbor as you round iconic Brant Point, you assure a future return to Nantucket.

Nantucket holds a special place in the hearts of the Hy-Line crew – they’ve been providing seasonal ferry service since 1973 and year-round service since December 1995. Nicknamed “The Little Grey Lady of the Sea,” the quaint island of Nantucket is located 30 miles south of Cape Cod and is just a quick  1-hour trip aboard their high-speed ferries .

hy line cruises around the sound

With its unspoiled charm and natural beauty, it is easy to see why so many travelers flock there summer after summer. Nantucket is easy to navigate by foot, bike, or car, as it is only fourteen miles long and three and a half miles wide, making it perfect for a day trip or a longer stay.

No matter where you are on the island there are so many things to see and do! With its gorgeous beaches, delicious restaurants and ice cream shops, numerous historical locations, museums, and the fun and interesting stores that line Main Street, Nantucket has a little bit for everyone.

When cruising into Nantucket Harbor you will pass Brant Point Lighthouse, completed in 1759. Many visitors love to take photos of the lighthouse from the boat, or you might choose to walk to this lighthouse which is a very short distance from Hy-Line’s ferry terminal. They say when you leave Nantucket and round Brant Point, throw a penny in the water and it will guarantee your return!

Martha’s Vineyard: Artsy Culture with New England Charm

hy line cruises around the sound

Only an hour away on  Hy-Line’s high-speed ferry , Martha’s Vineyard is twice the size of her sister island, Nantucket, at almost 100 square miles. Where Nantucket is mostly flat and sandy, Martha’s Vineyard has woods, fields, hillsides, and the breathtaking Aquinnah Cliffs. Along with its natural beauty, the island also boasts delicious, fresh seafood, hundreds of great retail shops, farmers markets, breathtaking beaches, and a friendly island culture.

Martha’s Vineyard is a beautiful island, consisting of six towns with magnificent coastline. The six towns of the island retain their own character and style. The “down island” towns of Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown are shopping havens with attractions and restaurants to suit every taste. The “up island” towns of Menemsha, Chilmark, and Aquinnah are quaint, quiet places reminiscent of the island’s maritime past.

To get a good sense of the island, you can either take a bus tour of each town from one of the many operators in Oak Bluffs or rent a car or bike for a little more flexibility. If this isn’t your speed, don’t worry; there is plenty to do within a short walking distance from the boat. Oak Bluffs offers colorful gingerbread cottages, the tabernacle of Camp Meeting Association, the serenity of Ocean Park with views of the Atlantic Ocean, and a busy main street full of restaurants, ice cream and candy stores, and shops full of anything you could possibly want or need. The town is also home to the Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest working platform carousel in the country, which is a must-see. Try your luck at grabbing the brass ring for a free ride!

Martha’s Vineyard is a bustling island with so much to offer—you’re sure to love your time there.

Hyannis: Centrally Located Near the Cape’s Best Things to Do

Hyannis has been Hy-Line’s home since 1962 when they first started as a sightseeing boat operating  Hyannis Harbor Tours , out past the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport. These sightseeing trips still operate today, highlighting the history of local area landmarks with live commentary. There’s a little more fun in the summer with specialty trips such as sunset cocktail cruises, ice cream floats, and musical bingo.

Also at the Ocean Street Dock are  Cape Cod Fishing Trips  on Nantucket Sound. Whether you’re a novice or a hearty fisherman, Hy-Line has trips for everyone. Manned by their helpful and attentive crew, both fishing vessels are Coast Guard inspected and certified for your safety.

With its picture-perfect Main Street, beautiful harbor, and attractions to please every age, Hyannis is considered the hub of Cape Cod for good reason. Hyannis proves to be a great home-base while visiting Cape Cod, for all these reasons and so much more.

Cape Cod Canal: A National Civil Engineering Landmark

This man-made canal is the widest sea-level canal (without locks) in the world. It was built to create more efficient nautical trade routes, opening in July 1914. Passage through the canal is safer than having to maneuver around the dangerous shoals and unpredictable currents surrounding the Outer Cape, saving ships more than 160 miles of travel. From Onset, a village of Wareham, hop aboard  Cape Cod Canal Cruises , the Canal’s only sightseeing cruise. Climb aboard the Viking for a two or three-hour sightseeing cruise featuring live commentary about the fascinating history and points of interest along the Canal, or in the summer choose from more options like a family cruise where kids ride free, or a live music cruise.

Getting There in Martha's Vineyard

Arriving By Ferry

Most visitors take the ferry service connecting the Vineyard and the mainland. If you're traveling via car or bus, you will most likely catch the ferry from Woods Hole, in the town of Falmouth, on Cape Cod; however, boats do run from Falmouth Inner Harbor, Hyannis, New Bedford, Rhode Island, and Nantucket. On weekends in season, the Steamship Authority ferries make more than 25 trips a day to Martha's Vineyard from Woods Hole (two other companies provide an additional 12 passenger ferries a day from Falmouth Inner Harbor). Schedules are available from the Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce (tel. 508/693-0085; fax 508/693-7589) or the Steamship Authority. Tip: If you’re interested in visiting both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in one day trip (admittedly, that’s a very full day where you’ll only scratch the surface of either island), check out Hy-Line Cruises’ Around the Sound excursions from Hyannis.

Car Ferries The state-run Steamship Authority runs the show in Woods Hole (tel. 508/477-8600 early Apr to early Sept, daily 8am–5pm, or 508/693-9130 daily 8am–5pm), with about 20 crossings a day in season. It maintains the only year-round ferries to Martha’s Vineyard and the only ferries that accommodate cars in addition to passengers. The large ferries make the 45-minute trip to Vineyard Haven year-round; some boats go to Oak Bluffs from late May to late October (call for seasonal schedules). If you’re bringing your car over to the island, plan to get to the Woods Hole terminal at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.

Many people prefer to leave their cars on the mainland, take the ferry (often with their bikes), and then rent a car, Jeep, or bicycle on the island. You can park your car at the Woods Hole lot (always full in the summer) or at one of many lots in Falmouth and Bourne that absorb the overflow of cars during the summer months; parking is $10 to $15 per day, depending on the time of year. Plan to arrive at the parking lots in Falmouth at least an hour before sailing time. Free shuttle buses (some equipped for bikes) run regularly from the outlying lots to the Woods Hole ferry terminal.

The cost of a round-trip car passage from April through October is $137 to $157 (depending on the size of your car); in the off season, it drops to $87 to $107. On top of that, each passenger needs to pay a round-trip fare of $17 adults and $9 children 5 to 12. (Kids 4 and under ride free.) Bikes add an extra $8 round-trip. You do not need a reservation on the ferry if you’re traveling without a car.

Note: The Steamship Authority charges different rates for cars of different lengths. You will need to specify the make and model of your car when you place your reservation.

Once you are aboard the ferry, you have won the right to feel relieved and relaxed. Now your vacation can begin. Ferries are equipped with bathrooms and snack bars. Your fellow passengers will be a gaggle of kids, dogs, and happy-looking travelers.

Passenger Ferries

Passengers without cars can ride the car ferry from Woods Hole. From Falmouth , the passenger-only Island Queen at Falmouth Inner Harbor (tel. 508/548-4800 ) makes a 35-minute crossing to Oak Bluffs, late May to mid-October. The round-trip fare is $22 for adults, $12 for kids 12 and under, and an extra $8 for bikes. No reservations are needed. Parking will run you $15 per calendar day. Credit cards are not accepted. Tip: It pays to buy a round-trip ticket on the Island Queen ; it’s cheaper than two one-way tickets. The Falmouth–Edgartown Ferry Service , 278 Scranton Ave. (tel. 508/548-9400 ), operates a 1-hour passenger ferry, called the Pied Piper , from Falmouth Inner Harbor to Edgartown. The boat runs from late May to mid-October, and reservations are required. Round-trip fares are $60 for adults and $40 for kids 6 to 12. Bicycles are $10 round-trip. There are several options for parking. Parking is $20 for the day; $25 for overnight.

From Hyannis , the traditional Hy-Line ferry runs daily from Ocean Street Dock (tel. 800/492-8082 ), to Oak Bluffs, late May through mid-October. Trip time is about 1 hour and 40 minutes; round-trip costs $59 for adults; $39 for kids 5 to 12 ($14 round-trip for bikes). Parking at the Hy-Line lot is $25 per calendar day in season (spring and fall $20, $8–$12 off-season).

From New Bedford, Massachusetts , a fast 1-hour ferry travels to Martha’s Vineyard six times a day in season (late May–Oct). The fare is $70 round-trip for adults; $40 round-trip for kids 12 and under. Contact Seastreak Martha’s Vineyard for details (tel. 866/683-3779 ).

From North Kingstown, Rhode Island , to Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Fast Ferry (tel. 401/295-4040 ) runs its high-speed catamaran Millennium daily from mid-June through October. The trip takes 90 minutes. Round-trip rates are $89 to $104 for adults, $66 to $81 kids 4 to 12, $16 bikes. Parking next to the ferry port is $10 per calendar day.

From New York City and New Jersey to Oak Bluffs, Seastreak Martha’s Vineyard (tel. 866/683-3779 ) runs a high-speed catamaran from late May to mid-October. Round-trip fares are $240 to $310 adults, $135 to $310 children, $30 bikes. The catamaran leaves Thursdays and Fridays from New York and takes 6 1/2 hours from New York to Oak Bluffs. The ferry makes the return trip Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.

You can fly into Martha’s Vineyard Airport , also known as Dukes County Airport (tel. 508/693-7022 ), in West Tisbury, about 5 miles outside Edgartown. Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines (tel. 800/352-0714 ) connects the island year-round with Boston (trip time 34 min., about $187 one-way); Hyannis (trip time 20 min.; $49 one-way); Nantucket (15 min.; $49 one-way); Providence RI (trip time 25 min.; $124 one-way); and New Bedford MA (trip time 20 min.; $49 one-way). US Airways (tel. 800/428-4322 ) flies from Boston for about $304 round-trip and also has seasonal weekend service from LaGuardia Airport, in New York City (trip time 1 1/4 hour), which costs approximately $400 round-trip.

Peter Pan Bus Lines (tel. 888/751-8800 or 508/548-7588) connects the Woods Hole ferry port with South Station and Logan Airport in Boston, as well as with New York City and Providence, Rhode Island. (To get to Falmouth Inner Harbor instead, passengers disembark at the Falmouth Bus Station and take a taxi to the harbor or, in summer, a free shuttle bus that gets you a short walk away.) The trip from South Station takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes and costs about $40 one-way; from Logan Airport, the cost is $30 one-way; from Providence, the 2 1/2-hour trip to Woods Hole costs $30 one-way; from New York, the bus trip takes about 6 hours and costs approximately $74 one-way. The trip from South Station to Woods Hole takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes and costs about $40 one-way; from Logan Airport, the cost is $30 one-way; from Providence, the 2 1/2-hour trip to Woods Hole costs $30 one-way; from New York, the bus trip takes about 6 hours and costs approximately $74 one-way. After arriving in Woods Hole, bus passengers then need to buy tickets for the Steamship Authority ferry.

Both Peter Pan and Plymouth-Brockton bus lines go from South Station and Logan to Hyannis. By Limo

Falmouth Taxi (tel. 508/548-3100 ) also runs limo service from Boston and the airport. It charges $165 plus a gratuity.

During the summer, you’ll most definitely need a reservation to bring your car on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. Word to the wise: You must reserve months in advance to secure a spot. Contact the Steamship Authority at www.steamshipauthority.com , or by calling tel. 508/693-9130 .
