USA TODAY 10Best

10 best cruise lines for every type of traveler, from adventurers to families

Danielle Bauter

May 6, 2024 // By Danielle Bauter

By Danielle Bauter May 6, 2024

Find your people on Carnival Cruise Line, one of the best for social butterflies

It's time to cast off your worries and set sail toward unforgettable experiences, charting a course for your dream vacation. But not everyone craves the same itinerary or type of cruise — some souls yearn for heart-pounding adventure, while others seek relaxation on idyllic beaches.

The good news? There's a perfect cruise vacation waiting for every type of traveler. From luxurious foodie adventures to social escapades and wellness wonders, we'll help you find the best cruises to indulge your desires. So, grab your swimsuit (or maybe your hiking boots), pack your sense of adventure, and get ready to plan your next cruise vacation.

Best cruise for the adventurer: Adventure Canada

Explore Devon Island in Nunavut during an Adventure Canada cruise

If adrenaline-fueled is how you like to cruise, then Adventure Canada is the perfect conduit. It's been a USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice favorite for Best Adventure Cruise Line for many years, and most recently it landed on the list for Best Cruise Lines for Families .

Advertisement Advertisement

Offering small-ship expedition cruises to remote areas like Greenland, Antarctica, the Canadian Arctic, and Iceland, Adventure Canada prioritizes exploration and education over typical cruise activities. Their itineraries get you off the ship and into the heart of the action, with zodiac landings, hikes, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Itineraries that travel to Greenland and Nunavut, Canada, literally take you off the map, visiting uninhabited archipelagos like Devon Island or towns like Ilulissat, Greenland, where you could potentially spot polar bears, narwhals, and beluga whales.

Watch out for calving icebergs, though — the possibility of a tidal wave capsizing your zodiac after ice plummets into the ocean is enough to get your blood pumping.

Best cruise for the wine enthusiast: AmaWaterways

Sample wine-themed excursions with AmaWaterways

Board a dedicated "Celebration of Wine" on Best River Cruise Line winner AmaWaterways and savor itineraries that sail through famous European wine regions like France's Bourdeaux, Germany's Rhine Valley, or Portugal's Douro Valley.

The cruise becomes part of the wine experience and often features partnerships with North American wineries that bring knowledgeable wine hosts on board to lead informative tastings and discussions.

The Rhine River cruise explores towns like Rüdesheim, a German winemaking town lined with tasting rooms and vineyards. In France, Riquewihr is one of the highlights of the Alsace Wine Route. You'll then venture on to charming Strasbourg, which claims to be home to the oldest wine on Earth. Stroll through historic vineyards and choose from a carefully selected wine list that showcases local wines from the regions you explore.

Best cruise for the hopeless romantic: Windstar Cruises

Find romance on Windstar Cruises' intimate yacht cruises

Imagine sailing around the rivieras of the Mediterranean, the crystal blue water sparkling under golden rays. The gentle sway of the vessel and the vastness of the ocean set a naturally romantic tone, especially when the sails rise over the setting sun. Unlike mega-ships with thousands of passengers, Windstar keeps things intimate.

Windstar Cruises travels to dreamy destinations like Tahiti and the French Riviera with three classic sailing yachts and three all-suite motor yachts. (Its Wind Spirit vessel took the top spot for Best Adults Only Cruise this year.) The cruise line also partnered with the James Beard Foundation to offer tantalizing meals on board. Windstar caters to romance with packages and add-on options, inviting you to enjoy dreamy spots like Bora Bora with an intimate dinner under the stars or a champagne breakfast in bed.

Best cruise for the wellness warrior: Oceania Cruises

Relax with a spa treatment at Oceania's Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center

Embrace the zen: Oceania Cruises offers a comprehensive wellness experience that caters to your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The state-of-the-art Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center offers a wide range of treatments designed to promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

Ranking for Best Boutique Cruise Line , Oceania is also known for its "finest cuisine at sea" philosophy, which translates to delicious and healthy cuisine (including extensive plant-based menus) alongside its more indulgent offerings.

Aquamar's Wellness Discovery Tours are shore excursions designed to complement your onboard wellness journey. For example, you can meditate with a monk in Thailand or learn to harness the power of spiritual drumming in Australia. Oceania travels across the globe on small, luxurious ships — from Africa to the Amazon, the Baltic to the South Pacific.

Best cruise for the culture vulture: Viking

Soak up some culture with Viking's classical performances

Designed for experienced travelers ages 55 and older who are interested in topics like science, history, and gastronomy, Viking has carved a niche for itself as a leader in cultural enrichment cruises. It steers away from the typical focus on onboard activities and entertainment. Instead, meticulously crafted itineraries immerse you in the history and culture of the places you visit.

Expect longer stays in ports, allowing you to explore destinations in greater depth. A Viking Resident Historian accompanies each ocean voyage, leading roundtable discussions and lectures about a specific topic. Along with classical musicians on board, Viking invites local musicians and ensembles for special performances. With an array of itineraries on their river, ocean, and expedition cruises, Viking travels to Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Asia, and North America.

It's no wonder Viking's extensive fleet of vessels has consistently ranked as reader-voted favorites for Best Boutique Cruise Line , Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers , and Best Ocean Cruise Line .

Best cruise for the social butterfly: Carnival Cruise Line

Party with fellow social butterflies on Carnival Breeze

Party lovers, unite! Carnival Cruise Line has you covered if you're constantly seeking social stimulation. The cruise line thrives on creating a fun and lively atmosphere on all of its ships. Carnival Vista, Carnival Breeze, and Carnival Celebration took the top three spots for Best Cruise Ship for Entertainment , making them great picks for social butterflies. Known for its energetic onboard entertainment that ranges from stage shows and dance productions to poolside games and deck parties, Carnival Cruise Line offers many opportunities to mingle with other passengers.

Download Carnival's HUB app to reserve select shows, specialty dining, and spa services. With an average of about 3,000 guests on board each ship, you're sure to find other like-minded individuals who want to check out the casino or comedy club, play an intense bingo game, or dance the night away at the nightclub. Destinations include the Caribbean, Europe, Canada, and Hawaii.

Best cruise for the solo traveler: Norwegian Cruise Line

Sail into the sunset with Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line goes above and beyond to cater to solo cruisers, from dedicated living quarters and social spaces to organized activities. The studio staterooms are designed specifically for solo travelers; solo-occupancy options for balcony and ocean view staterooms provide more personal space and a touch of luxury.

Whether you choose to visit destinations like Hawaii, South America, or the Greek Isles, you'll do so in style on this USA TODAY Readers' Choice Award winner for Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers .

You'll also have exclusive access to the Studio Lounge, a social hub where you can relax, meet other solo cruisers, and enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks throughout the day. Norwegian Cruise Line organizes social events specifically for solo travelers, ranging from casual meet-and-greets to group shore excursions, providing opportunities to connect with others and avoid feeling isolated. And if you crave solitude, you can find that too.

Best cruise for the LGBTQ jet-setter: Celebrity Cruises

Celebrate Pride in style every day of the year with Celebrity Cruises

"Love is love" perfectly describes the mantra of Celebrity Cruises , which goes beyond mere tolerance by actively celebrating diversity and creating an environment for LGBTQ travelers to relax and have fun. The cruise line fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all passengers, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Board one of the 16 ships that travel to hundreds of ports worldwide and embark on group excursions or private journeys.

Celebrity pulls out all the stops in June with Pride Month celebrations, including theme parties and dazzling entertainment. (Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Beyond is a repeat winner for Best Cruise Ship for Entertainment .)

Many Celebrity cruises host LGBTQ welcome parties on the first night, allowing you to meet fellow travelers, mingle with crew members, and set the tone for your voyage. They also have become a champion for marriage equality at sea, offering legal same-sex wedding ceremonies on board their ships.

Best cruise for the foodie: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Indulge your foodie fantasies on Regent Seven Seas' culinary cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises isn't just a cruise line; it's a culinary odyssey for discerning palates. The brand boasts an impressive array of specialty restaurants onboard, from French bistros to sizzling steakhouses and Asian fusion experiences, all with impeccable service and world-class cuisine. USA TODAY 10Best readers voted Seven Sea Explorer among the top 10 for Best Cruise Ship for Dining (twice!).

The Compass Rose, Regent's main dining room on all ships, transforms into an extension of the specialty restaurants, ideal for those who crave variety and exquisite flavors.

Regent also offers curated shore excursions designed for food enthusiasts, such as truffle hunting in Italy or cheesemaking tours in France, elevating your gastronomic exploration like never before. Gastronomes also can delve deeper with hands-on cooking classes led by culinary experts. Learn the secrets of French pastry or master the art of sushi making. These interactive sessions elevate your appreciation for food and empower you to recreate these dishes at home.

Best cruise for the family-friendly traveler: Royal Caribbean International

Enjoy water parks, tons of entertainment, and family-friendly dining on Royal Caribbean International

Have family, will travel! Royal Caribbean International offers something for everyone, from toddlers to teens (and parents or grandparents!). Voted among the Best Cruise Lines for Families , the award-winning Adventure Ocean youth program separates themed activities by age group, whether scavenger hunts or arts and crafts. You might have trouble luring them away.

What's a family vacation without some splashy fun? Royal Caribbean takes cruise decks to a new level with waterslides, kid-friendly splash zones, rock climbing walls, arcades, and laser tag arenas. Understanding that family vacations are about creating lasting memories, you'll also find family-friendly shore excursions like zip-lining through rainforests or exploring ancient ruins.

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

Choose a combined river cruise for further exploration

Author: James March

Published on: 07 May 2024

Updated on: 07 May 2024

What’s better than one river cruise? Two. Combining itineraries means you can explore more and unwind for longer, says James March

Riviera Travel’s five combination itineraries – new for 2025 – span some of Central Europe’s finest scenes, from delightful medieval towns to pine-strewn valleys, via the Rhine , Danube , Main and Moselle .

Here’s a closer look at each one.

The majestic Rhine, Heidelberg and Switzerland

The first stop on this cruise is Lucerne, a wonderfully walkable Swiss city famous for its wooden stilted Chapel Bridge and old town’s delightful pastel-coloured townhouses.

Cross the German border, where eagles soar over the Black Forest’s rugged pine valleys and cascading waterfalls, and you’ll come to the lakeside village of Titisee, which hosts an ethereal evening dinner and violin performance.

Returning to the Rhine means stops at Strasbourg and Speyer, where you’ll see its 16th century Romanesque cathedral. Enjoy a captain’s dinner as the cruise eases into the wine haven of Rudesheim, where you can sample the warm and fruity local Asbach brandy.

Heidelberg has a rich heritage and an elegant beauty. Watched over by a half-ruined castle and surrounded by foliage, the city’s terracotta roofs and old stone bridge resemble a real-life painting.

The journey continues back through Rudesheim and Strasbourg before a grand finale in Cologne. When the spires of that city’s great Gothic cathedral emerge on the horizon on day two, you’ll know your destination isn’t far away.

But while there’s deep medieval history here, Cologne’s streets are also splashed with rainbow-hued street art. The craft beer joints and vintage and record shops in its Belgian quarter are also worth exploring.

Get onboard

Riviera’s 14-night 'Majestic Rhine, Heidelberg & Switzerland' cruise aboard MS Emily Brontë, which includes Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne, Colmar and the Black Forest, departs on 29 April 2025, from £3,799 including return flight. Click here to discover this itinerary.

Grand cruise of the Rhine Gorge, medieval Germany and Switzerland

The Swiss Alps give this cruise a superb start, as the Bernese Oberland Railway cuts a path around lakes and jagged mountains. Back on the water, the cruise joins the Rhine and passes the Black Forest’s tumbling pine-strewn valleys before docking in Strasbourg.

With pastel timber-framed bistros lining Grande Ile’s gentle waterways, be sure to kick back with a warm flammekueche – a regional bacon and onion pizza – washed down with a floral glass of white gewürztraminer. Easing into the widescreen valleys and hilltop castles of the Rhine Gorge, your journey continues into the small- town medieval charm of Andernach and Boppard.

After touring the grand city of Cologne, the cruise eases on to the Main River and into Bavaria, where Bamburg’s old town awaits with its arched stone bridges, dreamy spires and crooked timber houses. Remember to sample Bamberg’s smoked ale, the seductively aromatic rauchbier .

You’ll finish up in Nuremberg, an ancient bastion of Bavarian culture and a living museum. Wander around churches and past sculpted fountains before finding a lively beer hall to reflect on your journey with a pint of weissbier (wheat beer) and a bratwurst pork sausage.

Riviera’s 17-night Grand Cruise of the Rhine Gorge, Medieval Germany & Switzerland cruise aboard MS George Eliot, via Middle Rhine Valley, Koblenz, Strasbourg and Nuremberg, departs on 10 May 2025, from £4,949 including return flight. Click here to discovery this itinerary.

Grand cruise through the heart of Europe to the Black Sea

Beginning beneath Cologne Cathedral’s soaring charcoal-black towers and finishing 29 days later amid the splendour of Budapest’s Neo-Gothic spires, this serpentine route across Central Europe winds through seven countries.

With terraced vineyards and fir forests tumbling into the Rhine, the opening stages of the journey cut through Germany’s most romantic valley – and there’s nowhere better to sit with a sweet glass of riesling and watch it all roll by. Make things even sweeter in Vienna by ducking into a traditional kaffeehaus for a hot chocolate.

On day two, a guided tour awaits through Budapest’s enthralling mix of Baroque, classical and Art Nouveau streets.

Then you’ll follow the Danube as it snakes into the Balkan region, marvelling at the natural majesty of the Iron Gates Gorge. You’ll emerge into the tranquil grasslands, estuaries and lagoons of the Danube delta on the Black Sea, which is home to 5,500 species of flora and fauna. Look out for gliding herons and cartwheeling terns up above.

This month-long journey comes to a fascinating conclusion via the bizarrely-shaped sandstone rock formations at Belogradchik, before you fly home from Budapest.

Riviera’s 28-night Grand Cruise through the Heart of Europe to the Black Sea aboard MS William Wordsworth, via Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Belgrade and Bucharest, departs on 6 June 2025, from £7,399 including return flight. Click here to discover this itinerary.

Rhine, Moselle and Switzerland

Start on a high in Switzerland, where the Bernese Oberland Railway weaves around snow-capped mountains and crystalline lakes. Back on the Rhine, your cruise ship will drift up to Strasbourg where a rocket-like 600-year-old Gothic Cathedral looms over half-timbered houses, twisting lanes and cobbled plazas fringed with cafes.

Your journey then bends west through serene valleys and quaint rust-orange architecture in medieval Koblenz, near where the Rhine meets the Moselle.

The Unesco-listed city of Trier – Germany’s oldest – packs in well-preserved Roman monuments including an amphitheatre, baths and bridge, and is a sublime spot to dine under the stars, just as Emperor Constantine once did.

Soak up the Rhine Gorge’s sensational views rising either side when you disembark at Rudesheim and take a cable car for majestic panoramas of the river and forests.

Bernkastel’s cobbled lanes await before you rejoin the Rhine to meander north to your final stop, Cologne, where it would be remiss not to toast the end of the journey with a riverside Kolsch beer beneath the languid willow trees at Aachener Weiher Biergarten.

Riviera’s 14-night Rhine, Moselle & Switzerland cruise aboard MS George Eliot , via Cologne, the Black Forest and the Bernese Oberland Mountain Range, departs on 24 June 2025, from £3,949 including return flight. Click here to discover this itinerary.

Grand cruise of the Moselle, Rhine, Luxembourg and Switzerland

Starting in handsome Basel, this adventure takes in the serrated Alpine peaks of the Bernese Oberland mountain range before turning north on the Rhine through the Black Forest and Strasbourg.

The cliffs, tumbling fir forests and lofty medieval castles of the Rhine Gorge have attracted artists and poets for centuries, and this section of the cruise is a wonderful opportunity to relax under the sun and watch this stunning corner of Germany gently pass by.

Turning on to the Moselle, the wooden taverns of Bernkastel are perfect for sampling glasses of local riesling. Luxembourg City’s multi-layered topography is another unique highlight of this detour, with the winding Chemin de la Corniche walkway providing fabulous views of the Duchy’s gorges, bridges and twisting roads.

Back in Germany, Cochem’s 11th- century Imperial Castle peers over a valley. Delve deeper into history in the Roman city of Worms, which since 1900 has been home to the striking Nibelungen Tower.

Your journey ends in Bonn, Beethoven’s birthplace and a city with an insatiable appetite for the arts – so make time to explore the German expressionism decking the walls of its Museum of Modern Art. Bonn’s Wilhelmine architecture provides a fine backdrop for finishing your adventure in style.

Riviera’s 17-night Grand Cruise of the Moselle, Rhine, Luxembourg & Switzerland aboard MS Oscar Wilde , via Lucerne, Luxembourg City, Strasbourg & Rhine Gorge, departs on 9 July 2025, from £4,949 including return flight. Click here to discover this itinerary.

You can pack light for this high-seas adventure.

An 11-day nude cruise is scheduled to set sail from Miami to the Caribbean next February — and you won’t even need an overstuffed suitcase.

Bare Necessities is partnering with Norwegian Cruise Line for the flesh-flashing event, which will see clothing-averse customers travel on board the Norwegian Pearl.

“As always, it’s our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear,” a message on the Bare Necessities site reads.

The 968-foot vessel, which can accommodate up to 2,300 passengers, has been renamed “The Big Nude Boat” for the journey.

“As always, it’s our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear,” a message on the Bare Necessities site reads.

The 968-foot vessel, which can accommodate up to 2,300 passengers, has been renamed "The Big Nude Boat" for the journey.

The cruise will make stops in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and St. Maarten, but customers will have to cover up if they disembark the ship to do any sightseeing.

Passengers are also subject to strict rules on board — most notably, they will be required to wear clothing while inside the vessel’s indoor dining rooms.

However, there will be a “large buffet area for nude outdoor dining.”

In order to maintain hygiene, nudists will also need to put a towel down before sitting “in the stateroom, pool deck and buffet area” if they’re baring their bottoms.

Bare Necessities also makes clear that “fondling or inappropriate touching is prohibited.”

Bare Necessities is partnering with Norwegian Cruise Line for the flesh-flashing event , which will see clothing-averse customers travel on board the Norwegian Pearl.

Prices for the nude cruise start at around $2,000, but cashed-up nudists can fork out upwards of $33,000 for a deluxe three-bedroom villa.

Bare Necessities has already chartered more than 75 nude cruises in the past, with one prior passenger speaking out about the experience in a recent Reddit post.

“Cruises seem to be for people who like to eat and lie around, so there were a lot of large people,” the 67-year-old man admitted.

Bare Necessities has already chartered more than 75 nude cruises in the past, with one prior passenger speaking out about the experience in a recent Reddit post.

“Also, most people don’t seem to be comfortable being nude in public until later in life so the crowd was older. I’d say 20% attractive, 20% average, 60% unattractive,” he added.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review: Is it Worth The Cost?

Meg Lee

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Table of Contents

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

World nomads single trip plans, which world nomads insurance plan is best for me, can you buy world nomads travel insurance online, what isn’t covered, is world nomads insurance worth it.

insurance-product-card-logo

World Nomads

  • Travelers can extend coverage mid-trip.
  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.
  • No pre-existing medical condition waivers are available.

World Nomads offers the Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans and excels in sports/activity related travel insurance coverage while offering solid trip delay, baggage delay and lost luggage protections.

The provider offers insurance plans for travel to nearly any country and is available to residents of most countries. In the U.S., World Nomads policies are administered by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, a Fortune 100 company offering various types of insurance and financial products.

Here’s what you need to know about World Nomads travel insurance to help you decide which plan makes sense for your trip.

Before you buy a plan, check to see if you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , and if so, verify whether those limits are sufficient. If they are, standalone emergency medical coverage may be adequate as the travel insurance provided by credit card often excludes healthcare expenses or offers a low limit (the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the few cards to offer emergency medical and dental, however coverage is capped at $2,500 ).

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

World Nomads offers different coverage levels for its travel insurance options, but both qualify as single trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

World Nomads is unique amongst other providers as it is a good fit for adventurous travelers. Its plans automatically include coverage for over 200+ activities, including skiing , rafting, backpacking and bouldering. Note that extreme sports are not covered.

All plans include trip protection, emergency medical insurance , emergency evacuation and coverage to protect your gear.

World Nomads offers two plans, with the latter offering higher limits and additional adventure sports coverage.

The plans can be purchased for trip duration up to a maximum 180 days, and you can extend your coverage mid-trip. The price of the policy will depend on the duration of the trip and the countries that you're visiting.

To see the cost of the insurance plan, you will need to input your trip details, your age and state of residence. Unlike many other insurers, you do not need to include the cost of your trip when searching for a World Nomads policy because trip cancellation and interruption benefits are capped at a specific dollar amount rather than a percentage of money spent.

We input a sample trip of a two-week vacation in December 2023 to Italy by a 30-year-old from Illinois.

World Nomads single trip plan cost

Here are some example World Nomads insurance costs based on our example trip.

world nomads travel insurance costs

Standard Plan

The Standard Plan ($86) is a good choice for those who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain adventure sports.

However, this plan still shines in sports coverage, covering activities like wind surfing and bungee jumping, which are seldom covered by travel insurance companies. A full list of covered sports by plan type is available on the World Nomads site.

Explorer Plan

The Explorer Plan ($155) includes all the benefits of the Standard Plan along with higher limits, rental car damage insurance (in the states where it is available) and adventure sports (e.g., skydiving, heli skiing) coverage.

This choice is also good for those whose trips costs less than $10,000 as this is the maximum trip cancellation and interruption protection.

A Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade is not offered by World Nomads. If this option is a must, look for a travel insurance company that offers CFAR.

Selecting the appropriate plan for your travels involves understanding which coverage you’d like on the trip.

If you have a premium travel card : If you have a premium travel card that offers an adequate amount of trip cancellation / interruption benefits, you may only need to get a standalone emergency health care policy. For example, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express offers $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per year in trip cancellation benefits . Terms apply. Only the Explorer Plan ($10,000) has a comparable level of trip cancellation protection. Terms apply.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate or applicable: If you don’t have a premium travel credit card , the coverage provided by your card isn’t sufficient or you didn’t use the card to pay for your trip, then a comprehensive insurance plan like the Standard or Explorer plan might be the best choice.

More chill travelers: If you don’t need adventure sports coverage and your trip costs less than $2,500 (or you already have trip cancellation / interruption benefits from your credit card), the Standard Plan would be sufficient.

Trip insurance plans are filled with exclusions, so you’ll want to pay attention to what is and isn’t covered so there aren’t any surprises. Here are some exclusions you can expect from World Nomads:

Pre-existing conditions: If you’ve sought treatment for any illness or condition in the 90-day period preceding the start of the policy and then seek medical care for the same illness/condition, you may be on the hook for the bill since World Nomads does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from self-harm, intoxication, drug use or criminal activity are not covered.

Travelers with pre-existing conditions might consider policies from providers like Travel Guard by AIG or Allianz .

» Learn more: The best travel insurance companies right now (World Nomads is on the list!)

World Nomads has been offering insurance since 2002. The company is well established and offers two single trip travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Both plans offered by World Nomads include trip cancellation, interruption and delays; emergency accident and sickness medical expenses; emergency evacuation; repatriation of remains; non-medical emergency transportation; baggage and personal effects; baggage delay for outward journeys; rental car damage in certain locations; accidental death and dismemberment; Generali Global Assistance; and adventure sports and activities.

World Nomads does not include Cancel For Any Reason coverage, even as an add on.

You will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs related to a covered expense. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In some instances, such as baggage delay, World Nomads pays you a fixed amount per day rather than 100% coverage for costs incurred.

World Nomads offers some good travel insurance plans for adventurous, single-trip travelers. This is also a good fit for anyone who is uncertain about their trip length (since you can add coverage during your vacation).

Insurance can be extended mid-trip.

You can insure trips up to 180 days in length — which makes it an attractive option for digital nomads .

Adventure sports coverage is more robust than many other plans.

Simple choice of two plans.

Extreme sports are not covered.

There is no annual plan option. A policy ends once you return within 100 miles of home, even if you’re only home briefly as part of a long trip.

Regardless of your trip cost, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is capped at a dollar amount rather than as a percentage of trip cost. The Standard Plan and Explorer Plan cover trips up to $2,500 and $10,000, respectively. If you’re going on a more expensive trip, you won’t be able to protect the entire trip.

You must be 70 years old or younger to qualify for coverage.

How to maximize your rewards
