The Asian Tour’s International Series will return to England for its fifth event of 2023 at Newcastle's Close House .

In 2022, another course in the area, Slaley Hall, hosted an International Series tournament – the first time an Asian Tour event had taken place in the country. This year, the venue for the 2017 and 2020 British Masters gets the nod for the tournament, which will take place between 17 and 20 August.

As well as the venue’s recent history of hosting the high-profile DP World Tour event, it also has a strong association with LIV Golf player Lee Westwood , who opened its Colt Course in 2011 and helped improve the features of its two courses by adding new tees and bunkers. It is at the Colt Course where the tournament will take place, and Close House Managing Director, Jonathan Lupton was delighted with the news.

He said: “Welcoming The International Series back to Northumberland for a second consecutive year is an exciting development. Having had the pleasure to visit the International Series Oman in February, it was fantastic to see the growth of the Series over the last year and we’re looking forward to working closely with the Asian Tour to create a memorable event in England.”

Close House owner Sir Graham Wylie was equally enthusiastic about the announcement. He said: “I am sure that the players will relish the challenge of the Lee Westwood Colt Course along with enjoying a very warm welcome from the members and guests. The people of the North-East are extremely passionate about sport and to host another world-class event in the region is a huge honour.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour Cho Minn Thant cited the success of last year’s tournament in the area and ties with Westwood as reasons why it is the ideal venue. He said: “The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom.

"To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership.”

The International Series was launched last year following a $300m investment from LIV Golf over ten years. Aside from the $2m purse for the tournament, many in the field will have an added incentive to perform well as the International Series Order or Merit winner will earn a place with the lucrative LIV Golf League next year. Former LIV Golf player Andy Ogletree, who won the International Series Qatar last month , is the current Order of Merit leader.

Asian Tour returns to England with star-studded field

asian golf tour close house

The Asian Tour is gearing up for one of its biggest weeks as some of the biggest names in golf head to Close House in Newcastle for the $2 million International Series England from August 17-20.

Lee Westwood, the former world No. 1 with 44 career victories — including eight on the Asian Tour — spearheads a cohort of 10 LIV Golfers set to wow the crowds over the Colt Course, situated just a few miles from Newcastle upon Tyne.

Despite being born and raised in Worksop, and an ardent Nottingham Forest fan, ‘Westy’ moved to the region a number of years ago and struck up a long-standing partnership with Close House as its attached tour professional.

Westwood said: “I’ve had the privilege of playing at home in tournament situations before, and there is truly nothing quite like it. Local excitement is building nicely with some of the players confirmed.

“I’ve been embraced by the people of Northumbria since I set up home there; their passion for sport is unrivalled and the full field will feel that during the tournament week — the atmosphere will be tremendous.”

Joining the Majesticks Team co-captain are 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell and this year’s Saudi International victor Abraham Ancer. Like Ancer, whose most recent win netted a share of the US$5 million purse in Saudi Arabia, McDowell will be looking to improve on a single Asian Tour career victory, which came back in 2008 in South Korea.

Seven-time Asian Tour winner and LIV Golf player Anirban Lahiri will also make his second International Series appearance of the year, following an impressive runner-up finish at the Vietnam event back in April. On that occasion it was Kieran Vincent who emerged victorious, somewhat following in the footsteps of older brother Scott, who earned a place in the 2023 LIV Golf League by topping The International Series 2022 Order of Merit (OOM).

Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra and American Jason Kokrak also make International Series returns after teeing it up in the first event on the Asian Tour’s 2023 schedule in Oman. Meanwhile, England’s Richard Bland, Brendan Steele of the United States and South Africa’s Dean Burmester will make their debuts.

Close House confirmed venue for International Series – England in August on the Asian Tour

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course will be used for the tournament

SPORT

Close House, a premier golf destination in the North-East of England with a strong affiliation to one of the country’s greatest golfers Lee Westwood, will host this year’s International Series England and ensure another world-class venue will feature on The International Series schedule.

The $2 million tournament will be played from August 17th – 20th and represents the fifth stop on The International Series in 2023.

The International Series England made its debut last summer, in the same region, and was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the United Kingdom.

The Scott Macpherson-designed Lee Westwood Colt Course will be used for the tournament. The highly rated par-71 layout measures just under 7,000 yards, and incorporates historical features throughout, including ha-ha walls and ancient woodland. It is one of two courses at Close House, with the other being the Lee Westwood Filly course.

The International Series was launched last year through a historic investment by LIV Golf that created a premier level of events to develop the next generation of stars and offer unprecedented pathways to top competition in the LIV Golf League.

Newcastle return

The ground-breaking initiative sits with the Asian Tour schedule and saw seven International Series events staged last season across seven countries in three continents.

“The Asian Tour is excited to be returning to Newcastle for the International Series England. We enjoyed a very successful event there last June, which marked the Tour’s first trip to the United Kingdom,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“To be able to stage the tournament this year at Close House, a fantastic venue that has such strong ties with Lee Westwood – a nine-time winner on the Asian Tour – adds an exciting new dimension to the tournament and provides another great opportunity for our membership. We thank Close House for making this possible and look forward to another trip to the North of England, which, as we learned in 2022, is an incredible region for golf.”

A strong field will once again make the trip to Newcastle hoping to emulate Scott Vincent’s win which was the start of a brilliant season for the Zimbabwean that culminated in him winning the International Series Order of Merit and a place in the LIV Golf League in 2023.

Westwood set for star turn as Close House hosts International Series England

Lee Westwood is set to return to competitive action at his home club, Close House, later this summer when the former world no.1 tees it up at the Asian Tour’s International Series England event from August 17-20.

Westwood spearheads a group of 10 LIV golfers who are set to join the field at the Newcastle venue, as the Asian Tour breaks new ground.

Despite being born and raised in Worksop, Westwood moved to the north-east a number of years ago and struck up a long-standing partnership with Close House as its attached tour professional, hosting the British Masters when the tournament was held at the club in 2017 and again in 2020. He also played a leading role in the design of the club’s Colt Course, which will stage the event.

Westwood said: “I’ve had the privilege of playing at home in tournament situations before, and there is truly nothing quite like it. Local excitement is building nicely with some of the players confirmed. I’ve been embraced by the people of Northumberland since I set up home there. Their passion for sport is unrivalled and the full field will feel that during the tournament week – the atmosphere will be tremendous.”

Joining Westwood are 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell and this year’s PIF Saudi International victor Abraham Ancer. Like Ancer, McDowell will be looking to improve on a single Asian Tour career victory, which came back in 2008 in South Korea.

Seven-time Asian Tour winner and LIV Golf player Anirban Lahiri will also make his second International Series appearance of the year, following an impressive runner-up finish at the Vietnam event back in April.

Signalling the halfway point of The International Series 2023 season, the event at Close House will be pivotal for players looking to climb The International Series OOM, currently led by the only two-time International Series winner Andy Ogletree.

As expected, there is already fierce competition to finish within the top 32 places come the end of the season. At that juncture, the player in the no.1 position will punch his ticket directly to the 2024 LIV Golf League, while the remaining 31 players will secure entry into the LIV Golf Promotions Event to vie for three further places up for grabs.

Tickets to The International Series England are available now from SeeTickets with prices starting from £10 and free admission for under-16s when entering with a paying adult.

Professional golf is returning to Close House this summer, when the English leg of the Asian Tour’s new International Series is staged at the popular north-east England venue.

The $2 million tournament will be played from August 17-20 and represents the fifth stop on The International Series, a new programme of elevated events which features boosted prize money and the chance for the leading players to earn promotion to the LIV Golf League.

The International Series England made its debut last summer when it was held at Slaley Hall in June. It was a landmark event for the International Series and Asian Tour as it marked the first time the Tour had staged an event in the UK.

Lee Westwood Colt Course

Dp world and asian tour championship course, set in the beautiful and serene tyne valley, only seven miles outside the centre of newcastle and nestled against the north bank of the river tyne, the 250-year-old close house estate has been lovingly formed into two of the best courses in the country. .

Our Lee Westwood Colt Course is 7,000 yards in length from the championship tees, having already held two European Tour events and one Asian Tour event, the course has proved to be both enjoyable and challenging for golfers of all abilities. Gaining a place in the UK’s top 100 golf courses, our Lee Westwood Colt Course provides one of the most varied challenges on the golfing map, so much so that we are recognised for being the home of championship golf in the North East.

Close House itself may date back only 250 years but prior to this the Roman Army roamed this land. In fact, the world famous Hadrian’s Wall almost abuts the course itself. Don’t let that put you off, though. This golf course aims to produce the most exciting range of thrills for every level of golfer, and it requires your utmost attention.

Design work on the course began in late 2007. From that moment the team quickly went to work finalising the theme of the design. It was agreed that the best style for this course would be ‘Old English’. We wanted your experience of the golf course to be in tune with the history of the property. To this end, much attention was given to the routing of the course. Apart from finding a way to give you the most pleasurable journey around the property, each hole has been constructed with a gentle footprint and aims to engage the natural features of the property.

You will find numerous little wonders as you move around the course. The highlights may be the ancient forest to the left of the first hole, the old Roman fort to the left of the 11th hole, the lake by the 15th tee, or the ha-ha wall and ice lake on the 18th hole. Each has a story, and each is for you to enjoy.
