Puerto Vallarta Mexico Port Guide

Cruise to Puerto Vallarta, México and you’ll be surrounded by the calm waters of the Banderas Bay on one side, and the Sierra Madre Mountain range on the other. On your Panama Canal cruise , Puerto Vallarta may be just one stop of many, but it's not hard to be enamored with its ease and proximity to lush rainforests just beyond the city limits.

Puerto Vallarta blends the vibe of a bucolic Mexican fishing village with a luxurious resort town. Downtown is a hub for nightlife, shopping, and some of the area’s top-rated restaurants. You’ll immediately recognize the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a landmark literally adorned with a crown, jutting out of the Puerto Vallarta skyline. Or head to Los Arcos for a photo op of you and preserved Romanesque arches overlooking the bay. Puerto Vallarta manages to capture everything you’d want in a destination—scenic beaches, plentiful chances for eco-excursions like horseback riding in the mountains, dolphin and whale watching, or swimming and sunbathing at Playa de Los Muertos.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to puerto vallarta, church of our lady of guadalupe.

A top on many tours in Puerto Vallarta, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a symbol of the city—its tower is instantly recognized as the jewel of Puerto Vallarta’s skyline, and the church even features an elaborate sculptured “crown” at the top of the tower, glittering in the midday sunlight from wherever you are. Each year, there’s a 12-day festival honoring Guadalupe in December.

Banderas Bay

Stretching across 62 miles of blue water and marine life, Banderas Bay is one of the largest bays in all of México, Puerto Vallarta is nestled within. While you’re on a Puerto Vallarta cruise, explore Banderas Bay for sport-fishing and wildlife, including whale watching, or take a boat along the bay, stopping in the small villages to look out at the ocean views.

Dolphin Discovery Vallarta

Whether you’re in a group or by yourself, you can arrange an unforgettable opportunity to swim with dolphins in Puerto Vallarta. Tours are about 40-minutes long and they include plenty of time to play with dolphins and get an understanding for their habits, their quirks, and all the reasons why they’re one of the world’s most unique species. Perfect for kids and animal lovers. The Dolphin Discovery center is about six miles from the cruise port, so a taxi or car is the fastest way to get there.

Playa de Los Muertos

This beach tends to be crowded and bustling, ideal for an action-packed day of parasailing, water sports, swimming, and more. Playa de Los Muertos is one of the busiest beaches in this part of México, and you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants near the beach. When you get tired of the sun, seek shelter for a cold drink.

These iconic arches welcome you to Plaza Morelos facing the ocean, and they’re one of Puerto Vallarta’s recognizable structures. Stop to take pictures at Los Arcos before continuing your jaunt down the boardwalk. It’s a free sight, and gives you a chance to look out into the Bay of Banderas as you continue on to cafes, restaurants, or shopping in the plaza.

Learn More About Puerto Vallarta Shore Excursions

Top things to do in puerto vallarta, walk around olas altas.

This neighborhood is also called the “romantic zone” near the pier in Puerto Vallarta. Sculpture installations, street art, and landmarks are easy to find along these walkable, cobblestone streets. Many of the best restaurants in Puerto Vallarta can be found in Olas Altas. Take a walk here for food, shopping, and friendly locals.

Book a Tequila Tasting

This area of México is famous for its tequila, and tasting tours are abundant. You’ll discover tequila and mezcal in new ways, including the history of tequila in the area and the distillation process required. You’ll also learn how to properly sip tequila. A must for foodies and lovers of tequila.

Go Horseback Riding

One shore excursion you can organize while on your Puerto Vallarta cruise is horseback riding. You can ride horses at sunset or under waterfalls. Many tours will take you up the hills into foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains, surrounding you with tropical rainforest. There’s no better way to explore this verdant landscape than horseback.

Climb the Sierra Madre Mountains

Head on a walking tour of the lush Sierra Madre Mountains just outside of Puerto Vallarta, where you can check out the 1.2 mile trail solo or with a group via tour. This is best for a day-long excursion so you don’t miss anything. After your scenic walk, you can take a dip in the brackish Cuale River, where families often picnic on the weekends.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

Café des Artistes

Address: Guadalupe Sanchez 740, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

This is considered one of Puerto Vallarta’s best restaurants—romantic and candlelit, with blown glass hovering and shimmering above the tables. Chef Thierry Blouet brings Latin influence to dishes that require classic French sensibility, like tartar of mahi-mahi with watermelon or the lamb shoulder with crusted pistachios. One way to experience an evening here is with the six course chef tasting menu. You can choose two or three dishes from their bistro menu. Reservations highly recommended.

Mariscos El Coleguita

Address: Calle Popa Loc. 17, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mariscos El Coleguita is a casual yet intimate experience close to the marina in Puerto Vallarta. They bring tequila to your table where you can get two on-the-house shots. Local seafood like tilapia, white fish, shrimp, and more are staples on the menu. Dessert, like the tequila, is provided—they’ll send fried plantains with a condensed milk for dessert to your table.

Address: Los Muertos Beach, Pulpito 105-3, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

La Palapa is designed to give you gorgeous views of the seaside. It’s one of the upscale options offered in Puerto Vallarta, taking pride in good service and even better food. Their bread and butter are their fresh, seasonal seafood dishes—like the seared salmon or seafood risotto—but they offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, too.

Playa Detox

Address: Avenida Los Tules 300, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

You’re probably going to eat a ton of great food while onboard your cruise ship. You might find yourself needing to cleanse or detox from the indulgent desserts or one too many mojitos. Playa Detox brings you nutrient-rich smoothies, juices, soups, and veggies to keep you energetic while you’re stopped on your cruise to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Planeta Vegetariano

Address: Iturbide 270 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Vegetarians will find Planeta Vegetariano their haven while in Puerto Vallarta. Because so many Mexican dishes include meat, and the coast brings about a lot of seafood influence, finding vegetarian dishes can be a challenge. The menu changes daily, but there’s almost always a salad bar. Soy carnitas, vegetable lasagna, and soy carnitas are top choices.

Culture & History of the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

What we know about Puerto Vallarta mostly dates back to the 19th century, but there’s evidence of local people interacting with and fighting with Spanish conquistadors as early as the 14th century. In the 19th century, this area was called El Carrizal, then named Las Penas, and the town outgrew its reputation as a fishing village quickly, becoming an integral trading and port city in record time.

In the 1960s and 70s, the Mexican government made necessary provisions and updates to the town’s infrastructure, building an international airport to service the growing tourism economy. 1964 brought Hollywood stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to Puerto Vallarta as they filmed John Huston’s “The Night of the Iguana,” which propelled Puerto Vallarta into the public eye. In the 1970s, resorts and hotels popped up, introducing more luxury options for travelers in the area. The boom in tourism continued even as recession and poverty crept up in Puerto Vallarta, devaluing the peso in the process. Today, Puerto Vallarta cruises are still bringing a large amount of foot traffic into the city and is still known as a luxury destination and has grown as a destination for LGBTQ travelers, now home to a variety of friendly bars, nightclubs, and beaches.

Puerto Vallarta Port Facilities & Location

Your ship will dock three miles from downtown at the Marina Vallarta Maritime Terminal, where you can easily exchange your currency, schedule a tour at a kiosk, or use one of the ATMs to grab some extra pesos.

Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

The bus system in Puerto Vallarta is very efficient, running about every five minutes to destinations across the city. A bus ride will set you back 7.50 pesos, and their system doesn’t allow transfers. Taxis outside the cruise port gate tend to be more affordable than the drivers who roam inside the port. You can walk to get to downtown, or take a taxi for less than $10. Taxis are abundant in the city center. Water taxis are popular to get from the pier at Playa de Los Muertos to the beaches.

Shopping Near the Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port

The main shopping in Puerto Vallarta can be found in shops, boutiques, and souvenir shacks on Morelos Street. Since the late 1970s, Vallarta’s flea market scene has boomed. The Mercado Rio Cuale is a haggler’s paradise, where handmade goods, jewelry, and Costa Rican clothing are all on sale. Vallarta is also home to a burgeoning arts scene where you can find work from Mexican painters and sculptors for sale. Mexican eateries and affordable food stands are staples of the flea market too.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency in Mexico is the peso (MXN), and one US dollar (USD) is the equivalent of around 19 pesos. Because of the influx of American tourists in Mexico, USD is accepted in a lot of popular tourist spots. However, credit cards aren’t as popularly used in Mexico as they are in the US, so you tend to be better off with carrying cash. When it comes to tipping, it’s definitely encouraged. 15-20% at bars and restaurants is the norm. It’s also polite to tip your tour guides and drivers a few extra dollars.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Cruise to Puerto Vallarta and find yourself immersed in dynamic culture and history. Unlike other coastal resort towns in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta ("PV" to locals), retains quite a bit of its colonial-era charm.  Its town square, Plaza de Armas, and the gorgeous church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, serve as the loveliest representations of bygone ages. While on your Puerto Vallarta cruise, take in these echoes of the past and more modern attractions, including an ambitious public art project along the seaside walkway (the malecón) and trendy restaurants such as La Leche, serving contemporary Mexican cuisine. Round these out with plenty of fun-in-the-sun outdoor activities on and along Banderas Bay (whale-watching! snorkeling! jet-skiing!), cruise excursions that reveal the best of Puerto Vallarta's flora and fauna, and a side trip to one of Mexico's pueblos mágicos (magical towns, a designation conferred by the government to recognize smaller towns that possess historical and cultural value), and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more pleasant place to spend part of your cruise to Puerto Vallarta.

From secluded beach hideaways and thrilling off-road adventures to unforgettable wildlife encounters and captivating cultural experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during their visit to this vibrant coastal city.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta largely depends on your personal preferences and priorities, as each season offers unique advantages. However, the most popular time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is typically sunny, dry, and pleasantly warm. During this period, visitors can expect daytime temperatures ranging from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C), making it perfect for beach activities and exploring the city.

  • November to April (Dry Season)

As mentioned earlier, November to April is the peak season for tourism in Puerto Vallarta, with many visitors flocking to the city to escape colder climates. The dry season offers optimal conditions for sunbathing, swimming, and outdoor activities such as hiking, ziplining, and golfing. However, be prepared for larger crowds and slightly higher prices on accommodations, cruises, and activities during this time.

  • May to October (Rainy Season)

While May to October marks the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta, it can still be an enjoyable time to visit. Rain showers are usually short-lived and occur in the late afternoon or evening, leaving the majority of the day sunny and warm. During this time, the city is less crowded, and visitors can benefit from lower prices on accommodations and activities. The lush, tropical vegetation is also at its most vibrant, and the warmer ocean temperatures are ideal for swimming and water sports.

In addition to the weather, consider local events and festivals when planning your visit. The Festival Gourmet International, held in November, showcases the city’s culinary talents, while the Puerto Vallarta International Film Festival in December attracts cinephiles from around the world. In February, the Festival Sayulita combines surfing, music, and cinema for a unique cultural experience.

Puerto Vallarta is a must-visit destination for any Mexican cruise itinerary, offering a captivating blend of stunning natural beauty, rich culture, and exciting activities. With its pristine beaches, vibrant culinary scene, and diverse range of experiences, the city appeals to a wide variety of interests and tastes.

By following this ultimate guide to Puerto Vallarta cruise port and considering the best time to visit, you’ll be well-equipped to make the most of your time in this enchanting coastal paradise of one of the popular Mexican cruise ports.

Los Angeles

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Cabo San Lucas

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Cabo San Lucas, where the sea, sun and desert join to cast an air of mystery and romance over all who visit. Cabo was once a tranquil fishing village and, in times long ago, a hangout for pirates. Although no longer the fishing village of old, and not many of the old pirates are seen around town any more, the magic of Cabo remains. Cabo is still small and charming by any standards, with a population of under 30,000. We do have 4 stop lights now. And with the number of activities available to the visitor, you could easily imagine you are in a giant amusement park. Cabo has come of age. Located at the southernmost tip of the magnificent Baja peninsula, Cabo has been blessed with what many describe as the perfect climate. Average year-round temperature is 78 degrees, it is a little cooler in the winter and a bit warmer in the summer. For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private yacht owners. They flocked here to be near "Marlin Alley", as the waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved, as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world. But Cabo is far from remote these days, and the attraction of this magical spot is no longer limited to marlin fishing. Cabo can be, many different things to people. Cabo San Lucas has become known as a perfect vacation spot for the entire family. Cabo can be as quiet, romantic and relaxing as any secret hideaway. It can also be as lively as anyone can possibly imagine. If your wish is to enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner, "muy romantico", beside the shimmering sea for just the two of you, we have some of the most romantic dining spots on the face of the earth. If golf, water sports, boating, fishing, ATV's, horseback riding and numerous other activities are what you seek, they're all here, waiting for you. If "party till you drop" is the mood of the evening, Cabo has got it for you, big time!

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Mazatlán spreads for 15 sun-splashed miles along a thumb of land that extends southward into the Pacific just below the Tropic of Cancer. Mazatlán thus marks the beginning of the Mexican tropics: a land full of palm trees, perpetual summer and a refuge from winter cold for growing numbers of international vacationers. Mazatlán’s beauty is renowned. Its coast sprinkled with beckoning islands and miles of golden bleaches and blue lagoons, it aptly deserves its title as “Pearl of the Pacific”. Mazatlan meaning "land of the deer" in the ancient Nahuatl language offers 10 miles of inviting sandy beaches. It's no wonder Mazatlan plays host to more than one million visitors per year. The vacationers come and frolic on the beach beside their “Golden Zone” hotels, while in the old town at the tip of the peninsula, life goes on in the old-Mexico style: in the markets, the churches, and the shady plazas scattered throughout the traditional neighborhoods.

Puerto Vallarta

2 day cruise to puerto vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in Jalisco state. It is known for its beaches, water sports and nightlife scene. Its cobblestone center is home to the ornate Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, boutique shops and a range of restaurants and bars. El Malecón is a beachside promenade with contemporary sculptures, as well as bars, lounges and nightclubs.

Puerto Vallarta – Mexico

Puerto Vallarta is a famous port of call on repositioning cruises. It is a resort town located on Bahia de Banderas. This safe and friendly town is one of the best cities in Mexico. It is not an artificial tourist trap, but more a city that became an amazing beach destination by luck when it was discovered by Hollywood in the ’60’s. Vallarta has lovely resorts, a great old town and lots of great attractions to visit in the near area. Read the Vallarta cruise port guide underneath.

Cruise port guide Puerto Vallarta – Mexico

There are 4 cruise docks at Puerto Vallarta. All of them are located at the Northern part of town approximately 5,5 km or 3,5 mile from the old city center of Puerto Vallarta. Cruise dock 1 (see map above) is the main cruise dock where you will find the cruise terminal and lots of other facilities. There is a tourist information point, ATM, wi-fi hotspot, taxi stand and souvenir market right at the dock. When more ships are in town cruise dock 2, 3 and 4 might also be taken in use. Keep in mind there are less facilities at these docks, although it is a small walk over to cruise dock 1.

Shuttle services

Depending on the cruise line you are travelling with there might be shuttle service offered. Check with your cruise line if this will be offered during your cruise or not.

The white taxis waiting at the cruise port are authorised by the federal Government. Taxi rates are posted in port. The official taxi rates are: From Vallarta cruise port to Malecon (center of town): 16 dollar per car or 5 dollar per person From Vallarta cruise port to Cathedral: 20 dollar per car or dollar per person From Vallarta cruise port to Playa Los Muertos: 24 dollar per car From Vallarta cruise port to Mismaloya: 40 dollar per car The taxi rate per hour is 40 dollar for a van and 30 dollar for a car. But we always recommend you to negotiate before you step into the taxi. The yellow taxis you will find outside of the port area are also official taxis. They are generally cheaper than the white taxis in port. They also do not have a meter and you will have to negotiate a price before you step in.

Public Transportation

You can also catch the local bus from the Puerto Vallarta cruise port to the old town. The bus stop is marked in the map above. Any bus saying “centro” is able to take you to town. You simply pay 1 dollar to the bus driver and this will get you to the city centre. Going back you can take busses going to “Marina” or “Walmart”. Walmart you say? Yes, there is Walmart located opposite the Vallarta cruise port.

The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico Riviera. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Puerto Vallarta is a major Mexican cruise port city located on Bahia de Banderas (Mexico's biggest natural bay), featuring over 100 mi (160 km) of mountains-encircled coastline. The city has population of around 260,000 (metro 390,000).

The settlement was established in 1851 under the name Las Penas. In 1918, the agricultural town was renamed "Puerto Vallarta" to honor a former governor (Ignacio L.Vallarta). Sierras mountains kept the town fairly isolated. In 1954 started a regularly scheduled air service. The road from Tepic was paved in 1970, opening the way for tourism.

City's tourism has steadily increased over the years and currently makes up to 1/2 of the local economic activity. International travel tourism's peak season runs from late-November through March. Puerto Vallarta beaches are among best-known tourist attractions. Long stretches of beaches are located to the north and a series of coves - to the south. The city itself is relatively big but has never lost its colonial charm and Mexican flavour - cobbled streets running up and down among the red-tile-roofed houses.

Puerto Vallarta cruise port receives ships on a regular basis and year-round. In 2015, the port was ranked one of Carnival Cruise Line 's "Top 5 ports in the world". In 2018, the cruise port handled 134 ship calls. For season 2019 were booked 180 visits. In 2020 summer, Puerto Vallarta inaugurates the new cruise terminal Puerto Magico (read more in the terminal section below).

Puerto Vallarta cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Puerto Vallarta dock at "Muelle de Cruceros Puerto Vallarta" cruise terminal. The facility has berthing capacity up to 3 liners simultaneously.

Bus tours to El Centro (old town, beach front and markets) are available. The beach front has undergone additional improvements to Malecon - long promenade along the beach, featuring numerous sculptures, night clubs, restaurants, markets, water activities (like boat pulled paragliding over the bay) and various other tourist activities.

(NEW) Puerto Vallarta Cruise Terminal "Puerto Magico"

In 2015 was announced a 3-phase (USD 36 million) project for building the new cruise terminal Puerto Magico. Building's exterior was designed as Mexican hacienda.

The terminal building is sized 15,500 m2 (167,000 ft2) out of total 24000 m2 (258330 ft2) indoor-outdoor area. The complex features dedicated 2-teared parking (capacity 400 cars) and Latin America's largest Aquarium. Project's Phase 1 was completed in 2018-Q3. In January 2020 were completed Los Alambiques (3 buildings, welcome centre, duty-free shop, offices, CBP-Customs and Border Control) and Hacienda Tequilera (shopping centre, regional merchandise, live entertainment) as part of Phase 2 (USD 16 million).

For new terminal's construction works was contracted the local company Puerto Magico. The facility is located on Pier 1, that currently handles ~80% of all cruise ship calls to Puerto Vallarta. The new terminal features a large welcome hall (sized over 30,000 ft2 / 2790 m2), several shops (selling local products), an aquarium.

Puerto Magico Terminal's official opening is scheduled for May 2020. The new facility supports 821 direct jobs (in addition to 3284 indirect regional jobs).

What To Do In Puerto Vallarta On Your Own

Are you sailing on a Mexican Riviera Cruise to Puerto Vallarta and not sure what to do? Here are some fun things you can do in Puerto Vallarta on your own!

How Walkable Is Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta is actually really walkable and well-known for how easy it is to get around town. You’ll be able to get to the beaches, shopping, and most restaurants within a 20-minute walk.

The neighborhoods are safe and pretty close together. Not to mention filled with visitors and tourists.

Getting around Puerto Vallarta on your own is also easy thanks to the Malecon Boardwalk. This pedestrian-only walkway spans 12 blocks and takes you through the best restaurants and beach areas.

There are also several vendors walking around the Malecon making it really easy to grab some souvenirs. You’ll also find the famous “Puerto Vallarta” sign here!

Puerto Vallarta Malecon

How To Get To the Malecon From the Cruise Ship Ports

It is possible to walk to parts of Puerto Vallarta from the cruise ship ports, but you really won’t get to see the best of the town.

It is recommended to find transportation to get to the Malecon if you are coming in off of a cruise ship.

From the cruise ships, you can walk to a beach and some shopping if you just feel like seeing a small area of beach. But to get to the main Malecon area, you’ll probably want to grab a taxi or Uber.

Trust me, it’s worth it!

From the ports, you can take a 20-minute taxi ride that usually costs around $5-$7 per person. Puerto Vallarta even has Uber to get you to the downtown area.

Taxi and Uber drivers are well aware of the cruise ship docking times and are often waiting in lines to take passengers to the downtown area. You will have no problem getting a ride to the Malecon!

Want to see more of Puerto Vallarta? Check out the most popular excursions here!

How Do People Get Around Puerto Vallarta?

If you are only spending a day in Puerto Vallarta, it is not recommended to rent a car. Most of the great beaches and restaurants are within walking distance, and parking is very limited.

I personally like to budget money towards a taxi or Uber when visiting Puerto Vallerta. When coming off of a cruise, you have limited time and the taxis get you around town much faster than anything else.

Puerto Vallarta does have a great bus system that is super inexpensive. But you will be standing around waiting for the bus to show up at specific times.

The Malecon (boardwalk) area is a short 20-minute ride from the cruise ship port and once you get there, it is easy just to walk around to get to everything you need. So even if it costs a little extra for a Taxi or Uber, you only need to pay that once to get there and once to return. Totally worth it!

What Are The Best Beaches In Puerto Vallarta?

Downtown Puerto Vallarta is located on a cove called the Bahia De Banderas . Because of the cove, all the beaches have calm water, making it enjoyable to swim, snorkel, and play in the sand.

Los Muertos Beach, Puerto Vallarta

By far the most popular beach in Puerto Vallarta is Los Muertos Beach . It is in the middle of downtown and is home to all the best restaurants and vendors. It’s also well-known as the best photo spot in Puerto Vallarta if you’re looking for good Instagram spots!

Camarones Beach is a good option if you want the beauty of Los Muertos Beach, but are looking for something a little less crowded and more relaxed. There are also several bars and restaurants along this stretch of sand.

Playa De Tules is closest to the cruise ship ports and is a short walk if you want to skip the taxis. It’s a smaller beach, but a lot less crowded and still near some great resorts and restaurants.

Conchas Chinas Beach is on the southern end of Bahia De Banderas and can easily be considered one of the prettiest beaches in Puerto Vallarta. It’s a bit smaller, but still near all the resorts and restaurants. But you’ll find more rock formations and tidal pools here. It’s still a good swimmable area but the scenery is breathtaking!

What Are Some Free or Cheap Things To do In Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta is a tropical paradise with tons to discover and do! If you like beaches, food, drinks, and shopping… you will never be bored.

But if you also like culture, scenery, and exploring… Puerto Vallarta is the perfect place to spend a day. And the best part is, you can do all of this for free or very inexpensively.

Walk the Malecon – Probably the best part of Puerto Vallarta and not to be missed. This miles-long boardwalk covers everything from the best beaches to the best restaurants. You can find vendors and several shops for some unique souvenirs.

Or try out some free tequila tasting. They obviously hope you’ll buy a bottle, but you can get several samples for free just to try them out!

Hire a Taxi – Yes, you can hire a taxi for a whole day or even a few hours. They are often the best tour guides and can take you to some secret, hidden gems. And the best part is, it’s usually very inexpensive.

Visiting Puerto Vallarta From A Cruise Ship

If you are cruising the Mexican Riviera and are only stopping for one day in Puerto Vallarta, I highly recommend you try out an excursion to really get out and see the area.

The cruise ships typically dock for most of the day so you’ll have plenty of time to go on an excursion, and still have time to come back and see the town of Puerto Vallarta.

But if you are on a very tight budget, or just want a day to relax in the town, then grab a taxi and head to the Malecon. This is by far the best area of Puerto Vallarta and has plenty to keep you entertained.

Dine along the boardwalk, swim in the ocean, sunbathe on the beach, shop with the local vendors, and enjoy the sunset with a drink in your hand before heading back to the ship.

Puerto Vallarta on your own

Tips For Visting Puerto Vallarta

To make sure you have the best vacation possible, here are a few things you should be aware of before you head to this gorgeous location!

1 – Bring bug spray – The mosquitos in Puerto Vallarta can be intense during the summer months and some still carry diseases. Protect yourself with some good bug spray !

2 – Learn the Bus System – Don’t be afraid to take the bus routes. They are super safe and VERY inexpensive. And can take you practically anywhere you want to go.

3 – Learn the Currency – If you don’t know how many pesos are compared to dollars, you will end up spending a fortune and not even know it. Don’t go in blindly! Either learn the exchange rate or swap out your dollars for pesos before you go.

4 – Don’t get the Temporary Tattoos – There have been multiple incidents of these tattoos or henna tattoos leaving chemical burns and some scarring. Mostly because these are not meant to be in the sun after application.

5 – Don’t Drink The Water – The rumors of drinking water in Mexico are true… you do NOT want to drink it! It causes major stomach upset and often Nausea and vomiting.

6 – Don’t forget the Sunscreen – Yes, Im sure you are aware it’s a beach destination so of course you will bring sunscreen . But the reason I mention this is that the sun is actually much stronger in this area and can burn you faster than you are used to. So whatever SPF you are used to using… increase it!

Best Things to Do Off the Resort in Puerto Vallarta

P uerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s greatest beach destinations. Except these days, it is so much more than just a great beach town.

What was once a sleepy fishing village has transformed into a world-class city by the sea. One of the rare combinations of coastal getaway and amenity-packed city, the energy in Puerto Vallarta is unlike anywhere else in Mexico.

Packed with restaurants, bars, beach clubs, and activities, there is never a shortage of activity in this Pacific Coast jewel. It also happens to have some of the best resorts in Mexico. But if travelers come to Puerto Vallarta and opt to never leave their hotel, they may be missing out on what makes Puerto Vallarta so special.

One of the safest cities in Mexico, the allure of Puerto Vallarta is what waits to be discovered along its cobblestone streets, up its mountain roadways, or down along the coastline. Get ready to discover the best of Puerto Vallarta with this roundup of the best things to do off the resort.

Puerto Vallarta’s Best Neighborhoods

Puerto Vallarta is a fairly large place these days, especially when you remember that it started as a small fishing village and beach town. If you’re venturing off of the resort, these are the neighborhoods that you may want to know.

The Marina: Home to several hotels and resorts, and the place where all the cruise ships come in, Puerto Vallarta’s Marina is well-stocked with restaurants, shops, and tour operators. It’s a very safe and walkable area, but because its primary focus is tourism you may be paying a lot more for food and activities in the marina.

Las Glorias and Versalles: These two neighborhoods are just a few minutes away from the Marina, but have a much more local vibe. Separated by the main road, Las Glorias is the neighborhood directly on the beach, while Versalles is a bit more residential. Las Glorias is essentially Puerto Vallarta’s Hotel Zone. Both, however, have been expanding their offerings at a rapid rate to include some of the best restaurants and bars in Puerto Vallarta that are outside the resort walls.

Cinco de Diciembre: This beachfront neighborhood is known for its cobblestone streets, toes-in-the-sand restaurants, and a mix of local and expat residents. “Cinco,” as it's known, is the beginning of the original Puerto Vallarta. It’s here you’ll find the start of the historic homes that climb up the mountainsides, funky restaurants, and lots of shopping.

Centro: Centro is where the world-famous Malecon begins. It’s also where you will find Puerto Vallarta’s main square and its most famous church, Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The Malecon is lined with art sculptures and has some of the city’s most iconic views.

Zona Romantica: Finally, at the end of the malecon you will arrive at Zona Romantica, or the historic downtown of Puerto Vallarta. The oldest part of the city, and certainly its most beautiful, Zona Romantica has the iconic cobblestone streets, the iconic Los Muertos Pier, and the most famous beaches in Puerto Vallarta. It’s also the most popular neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta for dining and nightlife.

Best Activities in Puerto Vallarta

Being a full-fledged city on the sea means Puerto Vallarta has so many fantastic things to do. Of course, you’ll find lovely beaches but chances are your resort has one of those. If you want to venture off of the resort, these are the best activities in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon

One of Puerto Vallarta's most important attractions is the Malecon. The pedestrian-only walkway hugs the coastline from Centro all the way down to the Zona Romantica. Along the way, you'll have the best views of the Bay of Banderas, as well as the jungle-covered mountains, historic homes, and colorful street art. The Malecon is the buzzy heart of Puerto Vallarta and has something happening at all hours of the day (and night).

Bay of Banderas

Central to the identity of Puerto Vallarta is the massive Bay of Banderas. The entire essence of the city thrives on this gorgeous body of water. One of the best things to do off of the resort in Puerto Vallarta is to get out on the water, whether it's a water taxi from Los Muertos Pier down to the more isolated beaches, a sunset cruise, or an adventure visit to Islas Marietas, a group of protected islands.

If you're visiting between December and March, keep your eyes peeled for whale sightings.

Mirador Cerro de La Cruz

If you want a little bit of exercise that pays out in spectacular views, consider a hike to the Mirador Cerro de La Cruz. High above Centro, this bird's-eye perch has sweeping views of the city, bay, and across the bay to Punta Mita.

Magical Towns

Puerto Vallarta has several Magical Towns that are within an easy driving distance for a day trip. If you don't want to drive yourself, plenty of local tour operators offer day trips. The most popular is San Sebastian del Oeste, an old mining town up in the mountains.

The temperature here is much cooler, the tops of the trees blanketed in fog, and a landscape of beautiful churches, ranches, and abandoned mines. Travelers can also explore Talpa de Allende, known for its famous church, and Mascota, a Sierra Madre village shrouded in pine and oak trees.

Another option is to head north to the neighboring state of Nayarit to visit the now world-famous Sayulita. This Magical Town has long been a favorite among surfers and backpackers, but in the past few years has exploded to have art galleries, restaurants, and bars. It can get crowded, especially on weekends, but it is one of the top attractions near Puerto Vallarta.

One of Puerto Vallarta's best beaches is one that can't be seen from town. You'll have to hop a water taxi and take a 45-minute boat trip south to the tiny village of Yelapa. This beachfront town is only accessible by boat and is home to rustic restaurants, guesthouses, and a crescent-shaped beach with gentle, blue-green water.

Zona Romantica

A trip down to the Zona Romantica is a must for any visit to Puerto Vallarta. The most beautiful neighborhood in the city, this is the spot to visit for the best Instagrammable photos of cobblestone streets, white historic buildings and red terracotta roofs.

Many of the city’s top restaurants and bars are here, and it has some of Puerto Vallarta’s most popular beaches.

One of the top reasons to come to Puerto Vallarta is to try the food. Local specialties include seafood, birria, ceviche, and much more. Several tour companies offer local food tours to many different restaurants and street carts. One of the best foodie experiences is Vallarta Food Tours’ Versalles Tour.

This experience takes you out of the main tourist areas and into the local neighborhoods to try some of the restaurants and local eateries that are shaking up the foodie scene in Puerto Vallarta.

Islas Marietas

The government-protected Islas Marietas is a group of uninhabited islands known for its rare wildlife. Local tour operators, like Boca Chicca or Vallarta Adventures, can arrange snorkel trips, paddle boarding, or even a visit to the hidden beach located inside one of the islands.

Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a very easy city to get around, and one of the safest in Mexico. Taxis are abundant and offer rates that are calculated by neighborhood zones. Uber is also available in Puerto Vallarta, and usually for a much lower rate than local taxis.

Once you’re in any neighborhood, it’s very easy to walk around. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even walk from neighborhood to neighborhood and get a feel for them all.
