Overview of Kilimanjaro Safaris

View from Safaris Ride Vehicle

Kilimanjaro Safaris is a popular safari ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Walt Disney World. The experience takes visitors on an 18-minute open-air safari tour through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, where they can glimpse real African animals in their natural habitats.

The ride is a must-do for animal lovers and offers a unique opportunity to see exotic wildlife up close. During the ride, visitors can spot about 34 different species, including famous members of the African Animal Kingdom such as lions, giraffes, and hippos.

Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom Ride Vehicle

The ride vehicle is a rugged, open-sided safari truck that can accommodate up to 32 guests at a time. The truck is designed to provide a smooth ride but it can get bumpy and you rock around a little bit when the vehicle goes over ruts in the road.

The wait times for Kilimanjaro Safaris can average around 30 minutes this will go up and down throughout the day. If you see the wait times get up there you can go try the Best Food at Animal Kingdom and come back. The line will usually go back down quickly. Genie+ and Lightning Lane are also available for this ride.

Animals You Can See

Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom Monkeys

At Kilimanjaro Safaris in Animal Kingdom, we get to see a variety of African animals in their natural habitats. Here are some of the animals that we can expect to see during our safari adventure.

Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom White Rhinos

The savanna of Harambe Wildlife Reserve is home to many mammals, including lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, rhinos, wildebeest, cheetahs, hyenas, African wild dogs, okapis, black rhinos, white rhinos, cattle, bongos, mandrills, sable antelopes, kudus, and bonteboks. During the safari, you can observe these animals up close and learn about their behaviors and habitats.

Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom Lion Napping

You can also spot a variety of birds during the safari adventure. The Greater Flamingo is one of the most iconic birds you can see, but there are other birds such as ostriches, storks, and cranes.

Nile Crocodile

In addition to mammals and birds, the Harambe Wildlife Reserve is home to several reptiles, including Nile crocodiles. These reptiles can be seen basking in the sun or swimming in the water during our safari adventure.

Overall, Kilimanjaro Safaris is a great way to experience real African wildlife in their natural habitats. We can observe these animals up close and learn about their behaviors and habitats.

Experience Details

Ride experience.

During your trip through Harambe Reserve the guide will point out the different animals and give you lots of good information. They try and slow down or stop by each animal area so you get a view of the animals. They can’t stop for long though the next vehicle is coming right behind you.

Animal Picture Guide Kilimanjaro Safaris

Above your seat the have an picture guide with all of the animals that you will see wandering the reserve. This can be educational and fun.

The animals are real and unpredictable. On our last trip the safaris guide had to slam on the breaks because three White Rhino’s ran out of the bush and right in front of us. It was pretty exciting.

Rhino on the trail

Its not uncommon for the driver to have to stop to let animals cross the road. In fact sometimes it can cause delays to the ride if the animals are stubborn and to not want to move.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Kilimanjaro Safaris is in the morning or at sunset. The animals are most active during these times, and the temperatures are cooler, making it more comfortable for both you and the animals. If you are looking for shorter wait times the afternoon and evenings are the best. We have a whole article Animal Kingdom Hours and best times to visit here Animal Kingdom Hours Guide & FAQ .

Accessibility and Health Restrictions

Kilimanjaro Safaris is wheelchair accessible, and assistive listening devices are available upon request. Service animals are also welcome on the ride. However, expectant mothers and individuals with certain health conditions, such as heart or back problems, should not ride. For the full details here is Disney Worlds ride and accessibility information.

Conservation Efforts

Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom Poaching Alert

Disney is big on conservation of wildlife and their habitats. During the ride they provide information about conservation and the programs that Disney is involved in. One of the biggest threats to wildlife in Africa is poaching. Poachers hunt animals for their meat, ivory, and other body parts, which are then sold on the black market.

Disney has several programs to help preserve wildlife habitat. Rafiki’s Planet Watch and the Conservation Station is a great place to lean more about these initiatives.

Tips and Recommendations

Cheetah on the prowl

When visiting Kilimanjaro Safaris at Animal Kingdom, there are a few tips and recommendations that can help make your experience even better. Here are our top suggestions:

  • Ride early in the morning : The animals tend to be more active in the morning, and you’ll avoid peak wait times. Plus, the cooler temperatures make for a more comfortable ride.
  • Bring a camera : Kilimanjaro Safaris offers plenty of photo opportunities, so make sure to bring a camera with a zoom lens. Make sure you put it sports or action mode, you never know when you’ll spot a rare animal or catch a beautiful sunset.
  • Be prepared for rain : Florida is known for its unpredictable weather, so be sure to bring a poncho or umbrella in case of rain. The ride does continue in the rain, so don’t let a little water stop you from enjoying the experience.
  • Keep an eye out for the animals : Not all animals will be visible at all times, so make sure to scan the savanna for any movement or signs of life. Some of the most popular animals to look out for include antelope, gazelle, hippopotamus, flamingo, warthog, baboon, ostrich, wildebeest, bongo, and mandrill.

Hippos - Kilimanjaro Safaris Animal Kingdom

  • Observe the hippos : The hippopotamus exhibit is one of the most impressive parts of the ride, so make sure to take some time to watch these massive creatures. They may be resting on the banks or swimming in the water, but either way, they’re sure to awe you. If they are hiding in the water there is a hippo exhibit on Discovery Island where you can see through the glass into the tank. It provides an underwater look at the hippos.
  • Read the game-spotting guide : The ride provides a game-spotting guide that can help you identify the animals you see and learn more about their habitats and behaviors. It’s a great way to enhance your experience and learn something new.
  • Check the FAQ : If you have any questions about the ride, be sure to check the FAQ below or the Disney World website . They can provide helpful information about accessibility, ride restrictions, and more.

Kilimanjaro Safaris Fun Facts

Did you know.

  • Guests can encounter more than 34 African animal species on Kilimanjaro Safaris, including antelopes, baboons, cheetahs, crocodiles, elephants, flamingos, gazelles, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, impalas, lions, ostriches, rhinos, warthogs, wild dogs, and zebras. Pictorial guides of each animals feature in each safari vehicle.
  • The fictitious African village, Harambe, where Kilimanjaro Safaris is located is a homage to real African villages that sit adjacent to vast preserves. Harambe is Swahili for “working together.”
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ savannah encompasses 110 acres, rendering this single attraction larger than the entire Magic Kingdom park, which only occupies 105 acres.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ savannah is called “Harambe Wildlife Reserve.”
  • As Kilimanjaro Safaris is located in a theme park, precautionary boundaries, including berms, moats, fences, wires, and chains, are overtly or covertly implanted throughout the savannah to keep the animals in their respective habitats.
  • Devices such as air conditioned rocks, cool breezes, salt licks, cooling or warming waters, and food help guid the animals towards the vehicle routes.
  • Guests experience Kilimanjaro Safaris in 10-ton, open-sided GMC trucks, with a camouflage exterior, and seats up to 32 passengers. Cast Members actually drive each vehicle and provide educational commentary throughout the safari.
  • The attraction’s plants are replaced each morning to compensate for vegetation consumed by the animals the previous day.
  • Guests can experience two related tours, Wild Africa Trek and “Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge,” for an additional cost. The latter experience begins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge , not the Animal Kingdom park.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ 1998 debut marked the realization of Walt Disney’s idea to utilize live animals in an adventure attraction. Disneyland ’s Jungle Cruise originally intended to fill this role in the late 1950s. Animatronic animals replaced the live animals in the version of Jungle Cruise guests enjoy today.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris’ development entailed much research. In 1990, Imagineer Joe Rhode ventured to Kenya and Tanzania to view animals and experience authentic East African safari tours.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris toned down and then eliminated an overt poaching plotline. First, during the Cast Member previews in 1998, complaints arose over the grotesque depiction of a fake elephant named “Big Red,” who was killed by poachers. Imagineers immediately wrote Big Red out of the attraction. The attraction debuted with a tamer plotline, where poachers kidnap an animatronic baby elephant called “Little Red” and, subsequently, get apprehended. Then, in 2007, this version was altered to limit the dialogue related to poaching between the safari driver and a naturalist named Ms. Jobson. In 2012, the entire poacher storyline, including the related props, were eliminated from the attraction. A zebra habitat replaced the space that the props originally took up. In early 2013 the addax antelope replaced the zebra in this space to allow for better viewing.
  • Save for a trial during the 1998 holiday season, Kilimanjaro Safaris ended its tours at sunset, regardless of park closing time, until 2016 because of lighting and animal sleeping issues. Beginning in the summer of 2016, with the debut of nighttime entertainment at the Animal Kingdom, Kilimanjaro Safaris will commence extended hours.

Safety, Accessibility and Guest Policies

Times for wild africa trek.

I paid $185 for a private safari at Disney World. Up-close interactions with wildlife weren't even the best part.

  • I paid $185 to go on a private safari tour in Animal Kingdom at Disney World.
  • The ticket included a two-hour safari, African-inspired food, drinks, and a souvenir at the end.
  • The experience was top-notch and worth it for the up-close interactions with the animals and guides.

Insider Today

I live 10 minutes away from Disney World and visit the parks frequently, but I'm always learning about new offerings. I recently discovered Savor the Savanna — a two-hour private safari tour at Animal Kingdom.

Although I've experienced the park's 18-minute Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction, I wanted to see what the add-on experience was all about.

Here's what the private safari tour was like.

The Savor the Savanna tickets are limited, so they have to be bought in advance.

disney safari trip

There are only 12 tickets available for each Savor the Savanna tour, so they must be booked in advance via the My Disney Experience app or Disney World's website.

The two-hour tour is held at 3:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. every day, weather depending.

I booked a ticket two days in advance for the earlier time and paid $174 before tax. The tour ticket doesn't include park admission, which is required to access this event. Fortunately, I didn't need to buy a park ticket because I had an annual pass.

I checked in at the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk.

disney safari trip

I entered Animal Kingdom and made my way over to the Curiosity Animal Tours kiosk just in time for the 3 p.m. check-in.

Upon arrival, I was asked to sign a waiver.

disney safari trip

I had to sign a waiver before the tour that covered topics including medical treatment, insurance, and assumption of risk.

I received a personalized name tag.

disney safari trip

I wasn't expecting to receive a name tag when I checked in for the tour, but I was glad I did as I could keep it as a souvenir .

Our safari vehicle was different from the standard Animal Kingdom attraction.

disney safari trip

The Kilimanjaro Safaris ride vehicles have seats in horizontal rows, but our private tour vehicle had wooden benches lining the perimeter.

I enjoyed the seating style because it created a welcoming environment.

The vehicle's seating layout created an intimate atmosphere.

disney safari trip

Our tour guide , Emma, was friendly and knowledgeable — she encouraged questions and ensured everyone could capture photos.

I liked that we were all able to face each other throughout the experience. It made the tour more intimate.

We had extra time to speak with a park employee working with the giraffes.

disney safari trip

At the beginning of our tour, we met John, a park employee who works closely with the giraffes in the savanna.

He shared fun facts about the animals and answered questions in great detail.

Since the vehicle was stopped, people could also stand up and take photos of the giraffes and other nearby animals.

We stopped at the Boma Platform for refreshments and great views of the savanna.

disney safari trip

We arrived at the Boma Platform, an enclosure-inspired stop, about 40 minutes into the tour.

Boma is a popular restaurant at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and we were welcomed with a table of similar African-inspired cuisine, including various cheeses , fruits, breads, and salads — the chicken salad was my favorite.

The stop also offered a raised view of the savanna with binoculars for an even closer look at the animals.

Various regional wines were also available to sip on.

disney safari trip

Although I don't drink, there was a selection of regional wines available for guests 21 and over.

We could also have complimentary POG juice (pineapple, orange, and guava).

disney safari trip

A glass of the fan-favorite POG juice at Disney restaurants can cost upwards of $6, but we were able to have as much as we wanted during the rest stop.

I found the unlimited supply of juice to be a bonus, especially since I don't drink alcohol.

Dessert was my favorite part of the meal.

disney safari trip

There were three desserts available at the Boma stop, and the fudge pop was the best dessert I've ever had at Animal Kingdom.

Toward the end of the tour, we had the opportunity to see rhinos up close.

This was my first time seeing a rhino in person, so it was a unique and fun experience .

The tour ended with everyone getting a small souvenir.

disney safari trip

In exchange for the lanyard that held my name tag (I could keep the paper part with my name on it), I was gifted a wooden coaster with Savor the Savanna engraved on the front.

Although this tour was pricey, I found it to be worth the value.

disney safari trip

Kilimanjaro Safaris is about a 20-minute attraction, but Savor the Savanna is nearly two hours, so I deemed the $185 ticket to be worth it .

I was able to ask many questions and had access to delicious food and unlimited POG juice.

Although the ticket is pretty pricey — especially since it doesn't include park admission — I'd definitely do the tour again for a special occasion.

How This Family Found Heart and Home on Safari

Sure, it’s a bucketlist vacation, but a safari in South Africa will send you home with much more than an overstuffed scrapbook of great photos. Our writer herded up her entire family for an Adventures by Disney journey that included perspective-changing game drives in search of the Big Five.

#journeys

PLANNING A FAMILY VACATION can be difficult at the best of times, but now that I am the mother of three young adults, the challenge of finding a time that fits everyone’s hectic schedules is compounded by finding a vacation appealing enough for my “children” to prioritize family time over their competing interests. It is complicated and frustrating at best, a comparable situation might be herding cats—actually, in this case, let’s say lions.

Holly Hatcher-Frazier, Adventures By Disney

I knew that an epic trip would be the enticement needed to get my entire family on board. We love animals and adventure, so I wanted to incorporate activities celebrating nature, but that still left many wonderful destinations. As a Black woman growing up in America, Africa has held a compelling allure. I have always wanted to go to Africa. So that narrowed the focus to an entire continent, but when the Adventures by Disney South Africa trip — including a safari — became available, I knew this was the trip of my dreams. This would be a special experience for us because none of us had ever traveled to any part of Africa. We were embarking upon a journey to bond and make memories. This trip offered something to meet all the our interests of my family of mostly animal fans. The only surprise was how impactful a little mouse would be to clearing everyone’s schedules, but Mickey worked his magic and we were headed to the bush.

From the moment we stepped foot in Cape Town and traveled to Kapama Private Game Reserve, I did not have to plan a single activity or lift any luggage. Our Adventure Guides, Jameel and Craig, served as our 24-hour concierges, including arranging for the “Tinkerbellmen” to have our bags waiting for us in our rooms upon our arrival. They organized everything, our meals which included a traditional braai (a South African barbecue) and afternoon teas before safari. With the necessities of life taken care of, we only had to focus on enjoying our vacation and family time. The trip offers a packed schedule, but we decided how active we wanted to be each day. My family left no stone unturned, if it was available, someone tried it, and we became fully immersed in the safari experience. From the moment we embarked on our first game drive we were ready to explore the bush in open air all-terrain vehicles.

South Africa Safari, Adventures By Disney

Observing animals in their natural habitat was obviously one of my favorite things about safari. A close second, however, was the unexpected surprise of peace and serenity that we experienced as we watched the glorious sunrises across the horizon. Game drives begin early, so whether those quiet moments were engendered simply by awe or a mixture of awe and exhaustion is still a bit unclear to me, but regardless it was beautiful. I discovered that South Africa has some of the best sunrises and sunsets. My family is normally a chatty bunch but being outdoors we were in sync with nature, and the quiet that surrounded us was calming. I think our senses were heightened because we were so focused on the natural beauty and trying to find the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinos. One thing I learned early on during the safari is that we were not in control. The animals have their own rhythm and routines, so we had to be vigilant and humble as we tried to glimpse them in their world.

The only “hunting” we did was for the perfect photo of our favorite animals. You quickly learn to keep your cameras out because you never know what you are going to encounter. Having your camera at the ready to capture the perfect photo opportunity is part of the sport, but just enjoying the moment and making memories worked too. I knew that the animals were not going to pose for photos, but I was surprised by the number of animal backsides I encountered—it was a lot . A sense of humor and patience goes a long way on safari especially when you are focused, as I was on sharing my experience with others via my “perfect” photos. But that’s part of the fun, and thankfully, no two game drives were identical so the variety and the unexpected were our constant companions, too.

South Africa Safari, Adventures By Disney

With all of that “hard work” trying to take the perfect photo, avoid branches, and stay in the all-terrain vehicle, we also happily had opportunities for breaks. I lived for sundowners, basically safari happy-hour cocktails in the middle of the bush. We basked in the setting sun and shared highlights from the game drives—whether it was watching a lion watch us as it strolled past our vehicle, baby elephants snuggling alongside their moms, zebras drinking from the watering hole or hippos swimming midday—all while sipping Savanna Ciders. This ability to decompress and share our impressions and favorite moments was quiet luxury at its best.

Spotting Leopard, Adventures By Disney

I was grateful to have seen so many magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. I am an educator from Pennsylvania who suddenly turned into an adventurer and wildlife photographer as the air whipped through my hair and I ducked branches searching for leopards during a night time game drive. The thrill of searching for and occasionally finding so many elusive animals who were often camouflaged by trees or meandering towards a watering hole was surreal. I remember being surprised several times as our vehicle approached a bend and a regal giraffe would be standing nonchalantly chewing on a tree branch. Each time I was left astounded wondering how I did not see the world’s tallest animal looming about until it was right in front of me. I am in awe of nature. Experiencing nature in such an authentic and vulnerable way was humbling. I felt so small in such a big world but at the same time I felt my unique place in the world.

Frazier Family Adventure, Adventures By Disney

I almost teared up when one of our guides said, “Welcome home!” I felt it so profoundly. Perhaps he was referring to the luxurious lodging proudly on display in the middle of the wilderness but to me it meant more than that. By this point, it was no longer an adventure about animals; it was a journey home for me. No, I have no knowledge of a familial connection to South Africa but I felt embraced by the people and the culture. I can see why people go back to South Africa over and over and why it is affectionately known as “Mother City.”cktk The country offered a vacation that I did not know I needed. And I think the same was true for my family, as well. It is not often that the five of us can travel and everyone is happy. We all agreed that our favorite moments of the trip happened on safari, but we each have a list of our other top five experiences—such as wine tasting, nature hikes, art galleries, animal sanctuaries and golf. South Africa offered something to feed each of our individual souls. We felt at home.
