We might be biased, but our Europe trips cover all corners of the continent and offer an unforgettable flavour of European life.

You could find yourself seeing iconic landmarks in Western Europe, sunning yourself on a beach in the Mediterranean, exploring cultural cities in Eastern Europe and partying the night away in Northern Europe – all on the same holiday!

If you’re interested in experiencing the diversity that Europe has to offer, then these trips are for you.

West Europe: See the best of Western Europe with European Voyages! Soak up the history, culture, landscapes and nightlife of this ever-popular region on one of our fantastic European trips.

From elegant Paris to lively Amsterdam, the snowy Swiss Alps to the chic French Riviera; Western Europe can boast some of the finest holiday destinations in the world. Tour France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Netherlands and more with European Voyages and see what all the fuss is about!

Mediterranean Europe: Centred on the inviting blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the residents of this historic region are renowned for their enviable quality of life.

Eating fresh seafood by the water in Spain; strolling along French Riviera promenades; sipping red wine at sunset in Italy; sailing off the Croatian coast; wandering through ancient monuments in Greece… the Mediterranean is full of memories waiting to be made.

European Voyages offer a wide range of trips which focus on or pass through this infectious region in Southern Europe.

Eastern Europe: Travel to Eastern Europe with European Voyages and visit some of Europe’s most exciting new destinations. Take a peek behind the former ‘Iron Curtain’ and discover Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland, Bosnia & Herzegovina and more.

What can you expect in Eastern Europe? How about cities dripping with culture and landscapes to take the breath away! From the romanticism of Budapest and gothic spires of Prague to the alleyways of Dubrovnik and charming squares of Krakow, Eastern Europe is full of pleasant surprises.

The Great Adventure

I truly enjoyed traveling with the group. Europamundo did a good job facilitating the trip. Though, we did have a little trouble keeping to the itinerary near the end. I would make a few changes to some of the highlighted stops in order to add in a little more free time.

Best of Central Europe Tour

Best of Central Europe

This tour had everything I was looking for! Great Eastern European food, great local beer, and a variety of things to do for any type of interest. The hikes were fantastic, and the transportation between stops was well organized. This tour offers a good balance of free time and time with the group, which allows you to come together at the end of the day over dinner to discuss your day.

The Best of Eastern Europe Tour

The Best of Eastern Europe

Very well planned and organized. CEO was round-the-clock attentive to the trip and each individual. Lodgings were excellent and well selected geographically. My only criticism would be that the name of the tour should be Central and not Eastern Europe. Would definitely recommend Gadventures to fellow travelers.

Classic Europe Tour

Classic Europe

My husband , myself plus 7 friends from Victoria BC, Canada did the 14 days Classic tour. It was everything we could have imagined and more. So much history and culture to absorb in two weeks. It was beautiful we had a WONDERFUL time. Our guide Antonio from Portugal was awesome; lots of jokes, some songs , jokes again :-) and plenty of history for each countries we saw. He showed a genuine concern for everyone's well-being as we journeyed across every country. My husband celebrated his birthday when we were in Switzerland ??and it was FANTASTIC Antonio made sure that my husband will have his special day, another unforgettable experience.. Our driver, Ishti , made travel on the narrow roads look so easy, he also made sure we are all safe (Best driver ever)These two gentlemen make a great team. We couldn’t get it better , we were one lucky group ? thanks for that AMAZING experience. Would definitely use Expat Tour again, thank you for a great VACATION. Amalia and Randy Victoria,BC Canada

Very exiting trip, we visited many beautiful places. End of May / beginning of June is the perfect time, because it's not so hot and not so full yet. However, I found the group to big (42 people), we spent quite some time on administrative tasks like check-in and out, toilet breaks, etc.

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

My experience was of the highest ever. Everything went very smoothly and our guide Mike was so professional. He was very thoughtful and predicted situations before they happened. The tour was so informative and well organised. Lots of information about all the locations we visited. He was very good at giving us the history and background. The accommodation was great and a good standard. Our driver Ricki was very professional and such a clever driver he made us feels safe. What a wonderful time we had. Thank you.

The contiki service was outstanding from Greg as our tour guide, he was extremely welcoming and made all people on trip feel comfortable. He has amazing people skills which enabled the group to have a really really good time. He has an unbelievable knowledge of the places that we visited throughout the journey and was impressive to watch him relay the information to a group of people who come from all different walks of life

What people love about Europe Tours

Thank for MARYSOL AND SE BASTIANO a great deal I finally seen Europe a great deal, I enjoyed Interlaken Switzerland Casino as I invested £10.00 and won £300.00 Swizz Francs . Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.
To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

Useful Information for Your Europe Tour Package

How many countries should i include in a european tour .

It depends on your travel tastes and preferences. If you wish to explore Italy or Greece, we recommend dedicating an entire trip to them, because of their size and geography. Countries like England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland are smaller and all in close proximity, so you could include four countries in this kind of Europe tour. Spain and Portugal are also a natural pairing and are well-connected.

How Many Days Are Required for a European Tour?

To do a multi-stop tour of Europe, we recommend spending at least 10 days. If you wish to visit just one country, four days to one week is sufficient, depending on the country. Many American visitors wish to spend more than one week in Europe because of the flight time from the U.S.

Is It Possible to Tour Europe by Train?

Yes—traveling around Europe by train is a great way to tour the continent. Spain, Portugal, France, England, Scotland, and Italy are all connected by comfortable high-speed trains. If you wish to transfer between destinations using the train, your Tourlane Travel Expert will gladly organize this for you.

How Much Does a European Tour Package Cost?

Europe Tour Packages: From Global Capitals to Glacial Wilderness

Nordic adventure is the siren call of Iceland—from the auroras of the Northern Lights to the glacial fields of Vatnajökull. Pull-on your winter coat and hop on a snowmobile to explore the floating icebergs of Jökulsárlón Lake, or hike the 200-foot cascade of Skógafoss waterfall. After a day of physical activity, rejuvenate with a visit to one of Iceland’s many geothermally-heated baths, and rebuild with some fresh and hearty Icelandic cuisine. Wander the streets of the charming capital Reykjavik to find a thriving cultural scene.

In England, you’ll experience eccentricity and sophistication side by side, as you meet its friendly, style-conscious locals that love to crack a joke. This compact country is easy to navigate and quick to get around, and while you tour, you’ll see so much variety in a country that’s the size of New Mexico! From mysterious sarsens of Stonehenge to the pastoral lands of the Lake District National Park, from the ancient cities of York and Bath to the modern metropolises of Liverpool and Manchester, this historic nation is packed full of diversity. Glide from medieval castles to pulsating cities, and from Victorian manors to surfing beaches, all in the same morning!

There’s something magical about Scotland. Perhaps it’s the epic landscapes, the age-old castles, and the single malt whiskey. Wherever you turn, you’ll encounter an enchanting quality that’ll have you returning year after year. Stroll down the Royal Mile in the elegant capital Edinburgh. Marvel at the otherworldly landscape at Glencoe, an extraordinary landform that resembles New Zealand. Go for a hike on the remote Isle of Skye to undercover idyllic, deserted white beaches. You’ll find it hard not to fall in love with the land of the Scots.

France is all about appreciating the crème de la crème —or the best things in life. Whether it be cheese, wine, or great art, France is full of elegance and grandeur. After sampling the rich reds of Bordeaux, be sure to feast your eyes on the epic monuments of Paris—drink champagne at the Eiffel Tower, before taking a stroll around the magical gardens of Versailles. Delight in the peaceful Mediterranean waters of the French Riviera, after a portion of fresh oysters on the oceanfront. Plan a trip to France to experience this storied nation.

Home to more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other nation, as well as the world’s most popular cuisine, there is so much to recommend Italy. A meal of a lifetime is just another lunch for Italians, and epic ruins are part of the landscape wherever you turn. Explore walled medieval cities and hunt truffles in Tuscany. Catch seafood on the Sicilian coast after hiking up Mount Etna, the island’s active volcano. Admire Michaelangeo’s David and enjoy succulent steak in Florence. Wherever your tastes and preferences take you, a tour of Italy will stay with you for a lifetime.

Irish culture is celebrated throughout the world, and for good reason. Here, the traditions are living and all-encompassing. Visit medieval castles in Cork, and enjoy a plate of Boxty Pancakes in Dublin. Explore the pristine green countryside, and travel the Wild Atlantic Way to see the hits of the west coast, from the Cliffs of Moher to the Connemara National Park. As you take in the beauty of the “Emerald Isle”—home to both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland—be sure to make time for a pint of Guinness and friendly locals in a local pub.   Less

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Europe ms3

Get to know the city that was once considered the capital of the world! A panoramic tour by a local expert leads you to all the most iconic spots in London. See Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and many more places you’ve only read about.

Europe ms4

Louvre Museum:

The Louvre Museum holds some of the most priceless treasures in the world. Enjoy touring with a local expert who will take you through an array of works ranging from ancient times to the mid-19th century. Don’t keep the ladies waiting! DaVinci’s famous Mona Lisa and the renowned Venus de Milo await your visit!

Destination Must-Do's

Europe md1

Explore Chateau de Chillon:

Europe has a wide variety of castles to choose from. The exquisite Chateau de Chillon in Switzerland presides over Lake Geneva. Beginning life as a Roman outpost, today it is the nation’s most visited historic site.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Europe md3

Drink Bordeaux wine:

Just about anywhere you travel in Europe, you’re bound to come across some fantastic wine, especially in Bordeaux in France. Resting on the Garonne River, this charming area is one of the largest wine growing regions on the continent.

Europe md4

Culinary Surprises:

The best way to experience a culture is to eat like the locals. The straightforward food of Great Britain always seems to delight travelers. While Italian food still reigns, you just might have the best meal of your life enjoying a steak and kidney pie or bangers and mash.

Located on the west coast of Europe adjacent to Spain, Portugal offers breathtaking scenery from seemingly never-ending beaches to breathtaking views from hilltops high above the sea; rich and vibrant cultural experiences from inside museums to its city nightlife or village sidewalks; wildlife and challenging landscapes for the adventure seeker; and romantic sunsets and sand dunes and moonlit sails for the lover in all of us. Wait, we forgot amazing gastronomical pleasures created by Portugal’s food and wines, or perhaps those are also found under lover?! No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look or how long you stay, Portugal offers something every traveller wants and makes it all too easy to get.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

At the heart of Europe, fascinating events of contemporary and more historic times shape today’s Germany - from the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the rise of the Beatles in 1960s Hamburg plus wartime history, picture postcard castles such as Neuschwanstein and medieval cities such as Regensburg. Landscapes range from the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge and plains of the north. The Hanseatic port of Lubeck provides delicious Marzipan sweet treats, produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, a stein of German beer or glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are a worthy accompaniment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveller anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Travel Tested Europe Travel Essentials: The Only Checklist You Need!

You’re planning a European trip and you need a Europe travel essentials checklist with all the travel-tested essentials for traveling to Europe so that you can have an amazing, stress-free trip. Well, good thing you landed exactly in this spot!

We all know planning a trip to Europe is a big deal and usually, it’s a bucket list travel goal getting checked off. The last thing anyone enjoys is the hassle of not having something they need!

The good news is I’ve traveled to Europe hundreds of times and along the way, I’ve made my fair share of Europe travel mistakes. But, they were all learning experiences! (Can you tell I’m a teacher?!)

So, I’ve put together everything I’ve learned in this ultimate guide of essentials for European travel so that you’re 10 steps ahead of the game before you even arrive at the airport.

Travel-Tested Europe Travel Essentials: The Only Checklist You Need!

5 Days in Portugal Itinerary Lisbon Tram

You can fill countless suitcases ( spoiler: don’t do this) with whatever and however much you want but without the right things for your trip, a potential headache can steal all the fun from seeing the Eiffel Tower or Rome’s Colosseum.

So, let’s skip the headache and build your European travel checklist the right way!

Essentials for Traveling to Europe: The Fundamentals

When planning a trip to Europe, there are European travel necessities that fall into a few categories. Some are absolute musts while others are more personal or for comfort.

Let’s start with the fundamentals. After all, it doesn’t matter if you’ve packed the perfect outfits if you can’t get past airport security.

Whether you’re heading to Italy , Iceland , or Spain don’t leave home without using this guide as your Europe packing list!

Obvious, but a total deal breaker if there’s an issue with yours. Be sure it’s in good condition with no visible damage. Also, check that it has at least 2 pages with no stamps and 6+ months until its expiration date. I always keep my passport and important documents in this protective cover , but also for my sanity so I always know where they are! This passport case is great if there are multiple passports to store.

Driver’s License

If you’re renting a car, you will need to show this to pick up your vehicle. But even if you’re not, it’s smart to have another official form of identification with your photo on it in case something happens to your passport.

Maps for Driving & Getting Around

If you’re driving in Europe, download Google Maps for the area(s) where you’ll be driving before leaving home. From the Google Maps app, click on your name or initial in the top right corner. Select “Offline Maps.” Then, click on “Select Your Own Map” at the top. Highlight the area(s) where you need a map and download it. When you arrive at your destination, you’ll be able to navigate in the car even without an internet connection. Similarly, the Maps.me app allows you to download maps to use offline. These maps can be especially great for when you’re out walking in a city because they show local shops, restaurants, walking paths, and more.

Using your debit card at a local ATM once you arrive is the savviest and most convenient way to get local currency at the best possible exchange rate. Also, debit cards typically have a Visa or MasterCard logo on them and require a PIN. In some cases, a purchase you need or want to make will require a card with a PIN like getting gas in a remote part of Iceland or buying entry tickets to a castle in Germany. ProTip: The Charles Schwab debit card refunds 100% of any ATM or withdrawal fees no matter where you are in the world. Don’t have an account? It’s free to set up. Plus, you can deposit a small amount into your newly created “travel account” to use for your trip. If your wallet gets stolen or you encounter any fraud, only this account with a small amount of money is at risk instead of your main bank account.

Travel Rewards Credit Card (with no foreign exchange fees)

For 95% (if not all) of your purchases in Europe from restaurants to shops, hotels, top sights, and museums can and should be made with a credit card. I recommend you use your travel rewards credit card for every purchase possible for fraud protection (i.e. when that bowl you shipped from Tuscany never arrives) and for the best possible purchase exchange rate with no fee. ProTip: When making credit card purchases in Europe, you’ll be asked if you want to pay in Euros or U.S. dollars. Always choose Euros. The credit card processor is secretly charging you a convenience fee that’s baked into that seemingly helpful U.S. dollar conversion.

International Driver’s License

If you are renting a car in Europe, some countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, and others require this document. The confusing part is car rental companies will let you rent your vehicle even without this document. You only discover that you have a problem (and possibly a hefty fine) should you be pulled over by local police. Apply through AAA , either at their nearest branch or by mail. It costs $20 + tax. You’ll also need 2 passport photos which they can take for you at the branch for a small added fee. The permit is good for a year and can potentially save you a lot of money if you get caught without it.

Travel Insurance

Important, especially if you don’t have a travel rewards credit card that offers at least some basic protections. But whether something happens before your trip and you need to cancel or you fall on some uneven cobblestone and break a wrist, you want to make sure you’re ok, as is the travel investment you made. Plus, most multi-day tours require that you show proof of travel insurance .

Photos/Copies of Important Documents & Travel Bookings

Take photos of your passport ( a must! ), driver’s license, credit cards, travel reservation confirmations, etc, and store them in a cloud-based place like Google Drive or Dropbox. If you lose anything, you can access the photo from any device with an internet connection. You can also print copies of flight, hotel room reservation(s), and activity bookings if it adds peace of mind.

And even though the things above will help you navigate all the logistics of international travel, don’t leave home without the Europe travel essentials you personally need for an incident-free trip.

Prescription Medication

Contact lenses + at least 1 extra pair, feminine hygiene products.

Ladies, whether you use this , this , these , or something else, be sure to take what you need to be comfortable.

First Aid Kit

This does not need to be overly extensive. I typically pack tablets for headaches, stomach troubles, a cold, and in case of an allergy, some Benedryl. I also like to carry a few throat drops with me, even if just for a dry mouth or throat, and a couple of band-aids for cuts or a blister. You’ll find pharmacies everywhere you go in Europe with everything you’d find at your pharmacy in North America. The idea here is just to pack a few of these things to hold you over should you need to get to a pharmacy in Europe. For reference, my first aid kit for European travel fits into a small plastic sandwich baggie.

Must-Have Travel Europe Essentials

The next part of the list covers Europe travel essentials that are important to have whether you’re road-tripping in Ireland or sightseeing in Budapest.

These important travel items keep you safe, and connected and help make your travel days to, in, and from Europe smooth and hassle-free.

Portable Power Bank

Keep your phone charged and ready to go whether it’s to take photos or to use a navigation app as you explore a new European city. And, even though most do, don’t assume all airplanes have a charging port for your phone. This is especially true on inter-continental flights where shorter-haul planes are used to go from one European country to another. (It’s not a good feeling to arrive at your destination airport with a dead phone!) I bring this portable charger with me on every Europe trip. Fully charged, it can refill my phone’s battery dozens of times before needing to be recharged.

Plug Adapter

You’ll need to have the right plug adapter(s) to plug your devices into European outlets. I have an older version of this plug adapter set that I have used to travel extensively throughout Europe and have never had a problem. The mini power strip is perfect for charging multiple devices at once. ProTip: If you’re going to multiple European destinations, check the plug type for each country. They aren’t all the same.

Luggage Trackers

If you’re checking a bag for your trip to Europe, Apple Airtags are great for keeping track of your luggage and can even help you locate your bag should the airline lose it. You need to have an iPhone to track the airtag. If you don’t have an apple device, try the Samsung SmartTag or Tile Mate.

Wire/Gadget Storage

You could choose a traditional wire organizer to manage cables, your portable battery, and other gadgets. They are extremely useful for storage and sanity! I also love these mesh packing squares . I’ve had the same set for years and they’re so versatile! I can use them for my cords, plug adapters, and portable charger. But they’re also great for just about any small, loose objects you need to pack. They keep everything together so you can find whatever you’re looking for quickly and without unpacking half your bag to find it!

SIM or eSIM Card

Staying connected is one of the most important travel necessities for Europe! European restaurants, cafes, shops, and hotels tend to have decent to good WiFi. However, free public Wifi isn’t the safest or most reliable way to connect your device to the internet. Not to mention, you probably still want a connected device even when you’re not in one of these places. For U.S. travelers, your phone’s wireless provider likely offers a travel pass. But these are typically very expensive (i.e. $10 a day!) and come with very limited amounts of data. Put another way, this isn’t a great option for staying connected while in Europe. The better option is to purchase a SIM card when you arrive at your destination. Most airports will have them available for sale, as will shops in most major cities. Even better is to buy an eSIM before you leave so it’s ready to go when you arrive. An eSIM comes with the added advantage of not needing to buy and install a physical card once you arrive. Either way, SIMs and eSIMs cost less and can be purchased in different data amounts depending on how much you’ll need. I use Holafly to purchase eSIMs when I travel. If you use code, THEGLOBETROTTINGTEACHER, you’ll get 5% off your purchase.

Luggage Locks

These durable locks are TSA-compatible so you can lock your checked bags. If they’re inspected, the TSA agent can unlock it and the lock will leave a red indicator letting you know your bag was inspected. Beyond that, these handy locks are perfect for backpacks and a variety of other bags whether you want added security in your hotel or you’ve stowed your bag in a luggage rack on an overnight European train.

Secure Money Storage

From the airport to full days of European strolling and sightseeing, you want something to keep your money and credit cards safe. Whether it’s a moneybelt , a neck wallet , an anti-theft bag , or a scarf with a hidden pocket , take some precautions to deter pickpockets. From Barcelona to Paris , would-be thieves are more opportunistic than anything. Be alert in touristy areas and on public transportation. (Direct eye contact works wonders to let someone know you’re paying attention.) Add extra layers of security to avoid looking like a target and it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems. ProTip: Only take 1-2 credit/debit cards and a little cash with you when you head out for a day of sightseeing. Extra money and credit cards, as well as your passport, will be safest locked in the hotel safe.

Travel Day Bag

You want a small bag or backpack that you can use to store your belongings and comfortably walk and sightsee. This has been my go-to daypack whether I’m hiking along the Slea Drive in Ireland or standing in awe as I stare at the Mosque-Cathedral in southern Spain . It’s compact and holds a lot more than it seems it would. I typically pack this inside my carry-on, which is also convenient later if I need an extra bag for souvenirs. For something a bit more fashion-minded, this messenger bag is both stylish and functional.

Reusable Water Bottle

Most European countries have clean, drinkable tap water. While you should always check the countries you’re planning to visit, rest assured you can safely refill your water bottle in most places. I’ve used the fountains in Italian cities and while hiking in the Cinque Terre, as well as filled up while driving Iceland’s Diamond Circle. So, save money and reduce plastic waste with a reusable water bottle !

Flight Creature Comforts (a.k.a. Things to Keep you Comfortable!)

Long flights across the Atlantic Ocean can be uncomfortable depending on what type of flyer you are and where you’re seated on the plane. But the good news is that small comforts go a long way! You want to arrive as rested as possible so that on your first day in Europe you can last the full day and adjust to the time zone. Ear plugs , an eye mask , cozy warm socks , and a neck pillow can all help you sleep on your overnight flight.

Entertainment

Whether you have a Kindle to read or you want to downloaded audiobooks, podcasts, music, or your favorite shows on your phone or laptop, plan to do this in advance. Anything that needs to be downloaded should be done before you leave home so you don’t use up data or rely on slow hotel wifi once you arrive in Europe. With these things set up on your electronic devices, you’ll be ready for that long train ride or just lazing away an afternoon at a cafe in Paris .

Europe Travel Packing: How to Pack for Europe

One of the essentials when traveling in Europe is to pack light.

If you’re like most people, you probably have at least a couple of European cities or areas on your travel itinerary. Dragging and lifting big, heavy suitcases from airports to hotels onto trains and along sidewalks is a stressful hassle that’s just not worth your energy.

So, let’s cut to the chase. You need a few important items to pack lightly, a sturdy piece of luggage, a carry-on bag, and packing cubes.

Rolling Suitcase

This is the rolling suitcase I’ve used for nearly all my trips to Europe over the past several years. And let me tell you, I’ve put this bag through the wringer! It’s proved its durability by being checked at countless airports and rolled through train stations all over Europe, as well as hauled in and out of hotels, metros, and more. Put any doubts aside about whether this piece of luggage can hold everything you’d need for a 2-week trip to Europe. I’ve done it numerous times and even stayed for up to 3 weeks without really needing to do a big batch of laundry. I’ve used a couple of other bags, too, if I’m taking a shorter trip. These honorable mentions go to this 19″ carry-on roller or this backpack which I’ve used for more outdoorsy European adventures.

Packing Cubes

These are the packing cubes that quite honestly I couldn’t live without. They are what makes the above suitcase possible. Depending on how I want to pack, I use 3-4 of these packing cubes to hold all my clothes. The magic comes from the compression. Once you’ve rolled everything inside and zipped the cube, the 2nd zipper compresses the cube down to half its size. If necessary, you can smooth out any lumps by pressing on the cube to even things out. ProTip: Think about how you’ll manage dirty clothes. You could bring an extra packing cube or a laundry bag. You could also shift clothes around as you travel, moving dirty clothes to a single packing cube and clean clothes into all the others.

Carry-on Bag

Without hesitation, this carry-on backpack has been my go-to for years. I absolutely love it. This bag has the perfect combination of smart storage compartments, style, and comfort. In fact, this is the most comfortable expandable backpack I’ve ever worn. I store things like my laptop, important travel documents, a change of clothes, and a 1-quart toiletry plastic bag with some necessities for the flight. Fully expanded, it can even hold a few days’ worth of clothes or those extra souvenirs you want to bring back home. ProTip: I like to pack a few extra plastic bags in case something leaks and for things like wet clothes.

Hanging Toiletry Bag

Not only does a hanging toiletry bag keep everything organized and easily repackable for European city-hopping, but it also allows you to keep things like toothbrushes and contact lens cases off the limited counter space around hotel sinks. You can still have all your toiletries hanging in the bathroom when you need them without worrying about knocking them off the sink.

Mini Travel Bottles

No need to take up space in your luggage with full-sized toiletries or create more waste with travel-sized (3.4 oz.) toiletries. These mini travel bottles are all TSA compliant, as well as easy to fill and easy to dispense. Best of all, they’ve never leaked into my bag!

Clothes for Your Europe Travel Checklist

Open suitcase with packed things on bed for Europe travel essentials guide

This section is a bit subjective because the clothes you pack will be dependent on the time of year you travel, what you’ll be doing, and your own style. But what to pack for a Europe trip is one of the most common questions I get, so I’ve compiled my best tips and recommendations below.

The most important thing is not to overpack. I know, easier said than done!

One way to avoid this is to plan your outfits, or if that is too difficult, pack clothes in a similar color palette. By doing this, you’ll inevitably have numerous pairings because most of the pieces will go together.

As you begin to pack, lay everything out first. You’ll likely be able to eliminate things that are duplicates (no, you do not need 3 black tops.) or items not in line with the majority color palette of the rest.

There are cliche items to avoid in European cities like flip-flops, workout clothes, or anything too casual like sweatpants or sports jerseys, shorts, super dressy clothing, or clothes meant for hiking and other outdoor activities. Not only will avoiding these items in cities be more fashionable, but they also help you blend in more. When you blend in more, you’re less of a target for a potential scammer or pickpocket.

Think more along the lines of classic pieces in neutral, soothing, or dark colors. For example, navy, black, beiges, white, and soft pastels. Also, be mindful of clothing that is too revealing, especially if you’re planning to visit cathedrals or other religious sites like in Rome or Seville .

The shoes you pack are also (so!) important.

First, pack at most 3 pairs of shoes including the ones you wear on the flight. Think smart casual and comfortable when choosing which to pack to find a balance between fashion-friendly and comfortable. You’ll likely be walking a lot and oftentimes on cobblestones.

And ladies, unless you have a specific formal event planned, you won’t need high heels. Even if you’re thinking they would be nice to wear for dinner, high heels are near impossible on cobblestone streets and take up valuable suitcase space! Instead, opt for a boot with a chunkier heel if you feel you need something dressy.

The items below are meant to be ideas to help you see what’s typically in my suitcase.

Except for the hottest days, jeans always work. They can be dressed up or down and worn with every top you pack. Everyone has a favorite pair of jeans they love so I want to give a shout-out to mine. These Duer Performance jeans are perfect for travel. They have a good amount of stretch and are very durable. What I love is they never seem to stretch out after multiple wears and they’re great for both city sightseeing and hiking. No matter which jeans you pack, go for a pair of dark-wash jeans. They’ll look cleaner for longer! Leggings are timeless, comfortable, take up little space in your luggage, and can be part of a smart casual or even dressier look. In other words, they’re perfect for travel! Other pants I’ve included in my suitcase and are versatile enough for a range of temperatures have been these Duer No Sweat Everyday Pants , these 7/8 joggers , these Bluffworks Chinos , and Eddie Bauer Departure pants . For hot summer days, go with wide-leg linen blend pants instead of shorts.

No matter what the season is I like to bring tops in different sleeve lengths that can be worn on their own or under a layer like a cardigan or a blazer. For summer European sightseeing, short sleeves that cover the shoulders will be ok for most Cathedrals. Lightweight and loose-fit tops will be the coolest for walking around a European city. Generally speaking, I pack these 3/4 sleeve shirts or these shirts with long sleeves. Lightweight sweaters are perfect for spring and fall and can mix and match with many different types of bottoms. They can be dressed up with a scarf and boots or worn with jeans and sneakers when you want to be more casual. Classic fit tees always work. And of course, a long flowy top pairs perfectly with leggings.

A top or a bottom layer can make all the difference for both style and comfort! For winter travel in central and southern Europe, a thin, effective base layer becomes your secret weapon. It keeps you warm while you’re walking without adding bulk to your overall look. In northern Europe, like Stockholm or Finnish Lapland , a baselayer top and bottom are essential! For shoulder seasons, a casual blazer that can pair with nearly all of your outfits is a win-win! Cardigans, either lightweight , open front , or something chunkier , go with most types of tops and bottoms and are great for added warmth even for a breezy evening by the sea.

Accessories

A scarf is an absolute Europe travel essential! It can add to your overall look and even provide warmth when needed. I always have 1 (or 2) with me when I travel to Europe. Longer scarves create that perfect fall or transition season look. These square scarves are so fashionable and can double as a headband! If you’re looking for something that can double as a scarf and a wrap, these pashmina scarves are perfect. ProTip: As a general rule of thumb, it’s best to wear little jewelry when traveling to avoid being a target for potential theft.

Comfortable Shoes!

Perhaps the most important Europe packing decision you’ll make is the shoes you’ll bring. European travel inevitably comes with a lot of walking which will become difficult or even painful with uncomfortable and unsupportive shoes. A Chelsea-style boot works in every European city and can be worn day and night. (In Italy, I think it must be obligatory for every Italian woman to have a pair in black!) These winter boots are stylish and warm in the colder months. Allbirds are some of the most comfortable sneakers I’ve ever worn. Vionic shoes like these and these are great, too, and come with extra arch support. For summer European travel, I never leave home without these sandals . They’ve been an excellent investment and have saved my feet compared to other non-supportive summer shoes.

Europe Travel Essentials FAQs

Medina Azahara Cordoba Spain

Is it better to travel with a backpack or suitcase in Europe?

There are pros and cons to both. Personally, I prefer a rolling suitcase and have never found it to be a problem even when traveling from city to city. Yes, there are cobblestones and sometimes no elevators when you need them. However, I’d rather lift my suitcase for a moment just to get up or down some stairs than always carry it on my back.

What size suitcase is best for a 2-week trip to Europe?

I’ve typically traveled with a 24″ suitcase for 2 weeks in Europe with the help of my packing cubes. If you need a bit more space, look at a 26″ or a 28″ but I wouldn’t go any bigger than that. Otherwise, it can become a real chore to move from place to place.

Is it better to fold or roll clothes in a suitcase?

Without question, it’s better to roll clothes in a suitcase. It saves space and protects against wrinkles. When rolled clothes are packed within a packing cube, it’s often possible to have 2 layers of rolled clothing inside.

How much should I pack for a 2-week trip to Europe?

In general, you’ll want to pack 3-4 bottoms and 5-6 tops. Dresses are also helpful (but not required) because they are complete outfits that can be dressed up or down. I’d bring 1-2 dresses if they match your style. For shoes, 2-3 pairs are plenty. Above all, comfortable shoes are absolute Europe travel essentials!

Also bring a scarf to use as an accessory, to cover up in conservative places, or for a little warmth. And unless you’re traveling in the absolute heat of summer, pack a blazer or light jacket (jean jacket, trench, etc.), as well as 2 sweaters or items for layering over a lighter top. Be sure the top layers go with the majority, if not all, of your clothes.

If your trip is in the winter, be sure to have a packable winter coat , a warm hat, waterproof boots , and layers. One of my hacks is to pack a couple of base layer tops so I can get added warmth without adding too much bulk to my bag or body!

Virgin Voyages is one of the newer entrants in the cruise industry as it inaugurated its first sailings at the height of the pandemic. With travel roaring back, Virgin Voyages has already been a hit, operating itineraries in the Caribbean, Europe, and further afield.

What sets Virgin Voyages apart from the rest of the crowd is that it’s an adults-only, all-inclusive cruise. The sticker price covers (nearly) all of your expenses, including meals, standard Wi-Fi, fitness classes, entertainment, and, best of all — tips. While alcoholic beverages are not included, you can prepurchase drink packages and usually get a solid discount when booking in advance.

Teetering the waters between a cruise enthusiast and a complete newbie, I was inclined to try one of Virgin Voyages’ European sailings this summer. If you’re a points and miles enthusiast like me, you’ll want to look out for stellar deals through Virgin Red where you can book one of Virgin Voyages’s weeklong European cruises for just 80,000 Virgin Points .

I embarked on an itinerary in late May 2023 that included stops in some of Europe’s most idyllic summer holiday spots, from Ibiza to Cannes. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from a Virgin Voyages sailing and whether I thought it was worth it.

Virgin Voyages participates in Virgin Red , the loyalty program encompassing Virgin Group’s other brands such as Virgin Hotels, Virgin Atlantic Holidays, and more. While it’s entirely separate from Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — the frequent flyer program of the U.K.-based carrier — you can transfer your points between both loyalty accounts seamlessly at a 1:1 ratio.

Several times throughout the year, Virgin Red releases promotions where Virgin Voyages cruises are bookable with points. Most recently, you could book a Sea Terrace cabin (2 levels above the baseline Insider or Sea View rooms!) in any Virgin Voyages cruise for summer 2023 for just 80,000 Virgin Points — and that’s the price for 2 travelers! There were also no port taxes or additional fees to pay, making this a truly extraordinary deal while redeeming your points and miles.

Best of all, Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club participate in nearly every major transferable points program, including Amex Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Capital One Miles , Chase Ultimate Rewards , and Citi ThankYou Rewards .

These weeklong European cruises can be over $4,000 during peak summer, so you could score nearly 5 cents in value with your points. This cost covers everything discussed below, including your meals, entertainment, and shuttles to and from port — for 2 people.

There doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason when Virgin Red releases these cruise promotions, as these sales usually have no published start or end dates. However, many of our Upgraded Points readers hopped on this fantastic deal last time, so be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to know when the next deal comes back.

Still, booking a Virgin Voyage with cash can be an incredible deal, given what’s included for the entire week. Paying for a cruise with your credit card can be a great way to earn thousands of bonus points. We recommend paying with the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , which earns 3x points on travel (including cruises!).

Virgin Voyages French Daze & Ibiza Nights Cruise Itinerary

Currently, Virgin Voyages offers 4 sailings departing from Athens or Barcelona. All itineraries are 7 days long, with intriguing stops across a few countries:

  • French Daze & Ibiza Nights: Barcelona, Spain; Marseille, France; Cannes, France; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Ibiza, Spain
  • Greek Island Glow: Athens, Greece; Santorini, Greece; Rhodes, Greece; Bodrum, Turkey; Mykonos, Greece
  • The Irresistible Med: Barcelona, Spain; Toulon, France; Marina di Carrara, Italy; Ajaccio, France; Ibiza, Spain
  • Adriatic Sea & Greek Gems: Athens, Greece; Split, Croatia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Kotor, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece

If you’re torn between the itineraries, a few factors may help you narrow your decision. While price and departure dates will likely be the main drivers, you’ll also want to consider the number of sea days built into each itinerary.

Each sailing features 5 ports, so the week-long cruise will fly by no matter what. However, some itineraries feature up to 2 full sea days , giving you more time to take advantage of the onboard amenities and restaurants. On the flip side, you will spend less time at each port.

Other itineraries only have partial sea days built into the schedule, like my French Daze & Ibiza Night cruise. While this schedule allows you to explore each destination longer, you may feel burned out by seeing too many cities in 1 week. Ultimately, the decision will rest on the vacation you’re seeking with Virgin Voyages.

Although the official boarding time started at 3 p.m. local time, guests needed to register for a boarding slot beforehand. As the boat officially departed at 6 p.m., theoretically, you had most of the afternoon to arrive at the cruise port terminal. However, many guests used this as a chance to explore Barcelona or other parts of Europe.

During the morning of departure, you can also drop off your luggage at the cruise port terminal. I arrived in Barcelona (BCN) on an early flight from London (LHR) and spent the morning wandering the streets of the bustling Spanish city.

Virgin Voyages Rockstar Security

The luggage drop-off and security screening process was seamless and took under 15 minutes. My friends and I spent the first few hours wandering the decks, sampling ice cream and pizza as we explored the eateries onboard.

You won’t want to miss a few other highlights on the first day. Once you’re on board, you can access the Virgin Voyages app by connecting to the onboard Wi-Fi — which serves as the hub for everything you need to know about the cruise.

While the app was glitchy or slow at times, it was nice to be able to scroll through each day’s itinerary, purchase excursions, and book reservations for dining, entertainment, spa treatments, and more. You’ll want to get on the boat early and nab up those time slots to get your ideal bookings for some of the most hyped-up restaurants like Gunbae and Test Kitchen .

Virgin Voyages Champagne Hour

Of course, there’s also a safety briefing you’ll need to attend on the first day. However, Virgin Voyages makes the meeting brief so you can go about and enjoy the rest of the cruise. Now, all left to do is clink your glasses for a Champagne toast as you watch the boat sail away.

With just 300 miles between Barcelona and Marseille, the boat moves at a snail’s pace all night before arriving in the South of France at 8 a.m. You can barely feel the cruise move at all, as the stops on this itinerary are quite close to each other.

Virgin Voyages offers a shuttle at each port that runs approximately every 30 minutes to and from the city center. Guests also needed to book their disembarkation slots through the app, but the crew members didn’t seem too strict on timing. Marseille was our first port, and we had approximately 10 hours before we had to return to the boat.

Virgin Voyages Marseille

I had already spent a long weekend in Marseille 5 years back, but this short day trip felt too rushed to revisit one of my favorite spots, Calanques National Park . Therefore, my friends and I spent the day leisurely walking around the city, stopping at Marseille’s traditional soap stores, enjoying a café (or 2), and meandering our way to the top of the Notre-Dame de la Garde for this panoramic view.

The next day, we continued along the French Riviera. Cannes is a tender port, meaning it’s too small to accommodate cruises like Virgin Voyages. Therefore, disembarkation took longer as we had to transfer to smaller shuttle ships to reach the French Riviera.

My friends and I were curious to see what a Virgin Voyages excursion was like, so we booked a day excursion to Nice, Eze, and Monaco for $110. This included all transportation and a local tour guide for the 8-hour day and guaranteed you would be back on the boat on time.

Nice France Virgin Voyages

If you felt like the cruise was already too rushed, booking an excursion through multiple cities will feel like a whirlwind . While I loved getting a taste of what each destination had to offer, my friends and I vehemently agreed that we should have focused on 1 city instead. With a jam-packed schedule, we only had an hour at each stop.

For example, we had enough time to grab a snack, quickly stroll through the weekday markets, and hike to the Colline du Château in Nice. Still, seeing so many places helped me learn where I want to return to (Nice and Cannes) and places I can skip next time (Monaco and Eze).

Virgin Voyages offers a library of port excursions you can book through its app. While they generally deliver decent value for your money, you’ll want to consider whether you want to explore the port on your own or have a tour guide leading you for the day.

As much as I enjoyed sightseeing thus far, I was thankful to get a breather with the partial sea day on Wednesday. We wouldn’t arrive at Palma de Mallorca until the late afternoon, so at this point, I felt that I hadn’t experienced the ship to its full extent.

Virgin Voyages Restaurant

I spent my morning working out at the spacious fitness center with updated Technogym equipment. The rest of the afternoon was at my leisure, and I spent most of the time reading my book in a cabana by the rear deck.

Virgin Voyages Gym

Once we docked in Palma, we enjoyed Spanish tapas and briefly explored the nightlife scene before returning to the boat.

Thursday’s port day was much shorter since we spent the night docked in Palma de Mallorca. We found that there wasn’t enough time to go farther out on the island, so we set our sights on the Ca’n Pastilla area near the airport. Upon enjoying another tapas lunch, this made for just the right amount of time for a few hours at the beach, complete with kayaking and some planespotting.

Virgin Voyages Mallorca

Once we were back on the boat, we were getting glammed up for Virgin Voyages’ iconic Scarlet Night — think a full-ship party. Guests were encouraged to bring something red to wear and may (or may not) get to jump in the pool at the end.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night

The decks were much quieter at sea as we were headed to Ibiza on Friday morning. I first toured the spa on the day of boarding and made a mental note to return. I used this free day to book a day pass at the Thermal Spa for $59 while the ship was sailing.

Considering you’re on a floating ship at sea, the spa facilities looked pretty impressive. There were hot and cold plunge pools, Turkish hammam benches, and steam and sauna rooms.

Virgin Voyages Spa

While I didn’t take any pictures on this day, the facilities seemed too small to accommodate the number of guests who frequented the spa on this sea day. Unfortunately, the temperatures in the hot tubs and steam rooms were also tepid at best. The cold plunge pools were also a letdown, as the water wasn’t freezing cold for that ice bath effect you’d typically expect. Despite a slightly underwhelming experience at the spa, my favorite part was the full-body exfoliating mud mask at the end.

If you’d like to visit the spa onboard, book a time slot while the boat is docked . The price drops from $59 (while at sea) to just $39, and there will be significantly fewer people there!

By the late afternoon, we were approaching Ibiza. Many guests, including myself, were preparing for the Calvin Harris concert at Ushuaïa Ibiza , a beach club that drew in as many as 10,000 people per night.

Virgin Voyages Ibiza

Ibiza is renowned for its nightclubs, so my friends and I decided to explore a quieter gem instead. Just a 30-minute ferry from the main port of Ibiza, we spent our final hours in Formentera, a gorgeous yet remote island that felt worlds away from the rest of Spain.

Virgin Voyages Formentara

Based on a few recommendations from friends, we ate breakfast and lunch at Bocasalina. The menu items were fresh, emphasizing seafood, inspired by Spanish and Italian cuisine.

Virgin Voyages Formentara Meal

The restaurant overlooked a beautiful beach with some of the bluest and calmest waters I’ve ever seen — rivaling some of the hotspots I’ve visited in the Caribbean.

Virgin Voyages Formentara Beaches

Just past dawn, we arrived back in Barcelona, where it all started.

Virgin Voyages Balcony Sunset

Although the boat docked early in the morning, we could book our disembarkation slot up until 11 a.m. — so there wasn’t a rush to get going immediately. By booking a later slot, we got to enjoy 1 final breakfast before officially parting ways with Virgin Voyages.

When you think of cruise ships, you may think of cramped quarters with tiny portholes. However, Virgin Voyages’ guest rooms were surprisingly spacious across the board.

First, there are 5 room types on Virgin Voyages: insider, sea view, sea terrace, Rockstar Quarters, and Mega Rockstar Quarters. Comparing them to traditional hotel guest rooms, you can consider the first 3 room types standard rooms, while the Rockstar and Mega Rockstar Quarters are suite-style rooms.

Virgin Voyages Cabin

What’s most interesting about Virgin Voyages is that nearly 80% of its cabins are sea terrace rooms, which are much larger than your average cruise room and come with balconies and hammocks. A much smaller fraction of rooms are insider (windowless) or sea view (port holes), so the sea terrace room is not only much more common but is worth the investment for only a few hundred more dollars more.

Virgin Voyages Balcony

The rooms are designed to maximize space, so you can ask a staff member to help convert your bed into a sofa lounger during the day. Otherwise, I thought the rooms perfectly balanced functionality and space, with plenty of storage areas in the closet to organize your belongings.

Virgin Voyages Room Look

You won’t need to bring any converters with you, as there are multiple U.S. outlets and USB ports everywhere you turn. Finally, each room comes with an iPad where you can order room service, fresh towels, and anything in between. The real highlight was the staff members, who catered to every request (in what seemed like) lightning speed.

The bathroom was tight, which is to be expected on most cruises. However, I was surprised that the water pressure was strong and the shower got hot immediately — both were huge wins in my book.

Rendering of a bathroom in a Virgin Voyages cabin

Before this experience, I had only been on one other cruise ( MSC ) before, where the food onboard was largely disappointing. However, I had heard pleasant musings about Virgin Voyages as it aims to reinvent the wheel on cruise dining. For starters, there are 6 sit-down restaurants — so naturally, you’ll want to try out a different one every night of the week:

  • Extra Virgin: Italian
  • Gunbae: Korean BBQ
  • Pink Agave: Mexican
  • Razzle Dazzle: Vegetarian and vegan
  • Test Kitchen: Experimental kitchen
  • The Wake: Seafood and steakhouse

From the hostess stand to the menus at the table, it felt like dining at a real restaurant every step of the way. While Virgin Voyages goes above and beyond to bring a large range of dishes that caters to every dietary restriction and inventive dining experiences, we ultimately found that the execution fell flat.

For example, Test Kitchen is a Michelin-inspired kitchen that offers chef-driven menus, which sounded great in theory. The actual dining experience was sublime, but none of the dishes ended up being that appetizing — and this is coming from someone who will eat anything. Dishes like the pea and raw egg yolk dish to a mushroom pate photographed beautifully, but the taste itself didn’t work.

Virgin Voyages Test Kitchen

Over at Gunbae, the Korean BBQ felt overly greasy, with disappointing kimchi and other side dishes.

Virgin Voyages Gunbae Korean BBQ

That’s not to say that all of the food onboard was bad — actually, quite the opposite. There were memorable standouts throughout the week, like Pink Agave’s chips and guacamole or The Wake’s steak and dinner rolls. We also found that Virgin Voyages excels in the staples at the more casual joints onboard — think pizza, ice cream, and salads.

Virgin Voyages Ice Cream

For a more traditional cruise-style buffet, we frequented the Galley quite often. This cafeteria-style eatery offered everything from sushi to burgers, all day for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night eats. Ultimately, we mistakenly set the bar too high, but you will find that the food is much better than your average cruise.

From 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. every night, visit the Galley for a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie at the dessert bar.

The bars were just as gorgeous as the restaurants and the rest of the ship. If you don’t have a prepaid bar tab, you can expect to pay around $15 per cocktail. For non-drinkers like me, there are plenty of spirit-free options. The bartenders were also friendly and more than willing to shake up cocktails sans alcohol.

Virgin Voyages Bar

From drag brunches to karaoke nights to circus shows, Virgin Voyages offered a mile-long list of activities so guests could truly kick back and have fun.

Virgin Voyages Karaoke

With all of the entertainment included in the fare, there was something to do nearly every hour during the day without feeling like you were breaking the bank by opting in. These shows were also a great way to mingle with other guests onboard.

Cruises have been around for decades, but Virgin Voyages aims to bring a fresh take to appeal to a new generation of travelers. Virgin has heavily invested in its technology to bring a seamless experience for its guests, whether it’s requesting room service on your in-room iPad or using your wristband to pay for virtually anything onboard.

Unfortunately, the standard Wi-Fi was relatively slow, and the app had several glitches. I ended up paying for the premium Wi-Fi package ($80 for the week) and found that it was well worth the upgrade. The premium Wi-Fi worked quite well, and I was able to catch up on some work, FaceTime friends and family back home, and everything in between.

Virgin Voyages was also a knockout regarding the comfortable and spacious rooms, and every single staff member was so helpful and a joy to talk to. The amenities onboard were also excellent, and we were never bored while on board (pun intended). Furthermore, the strict no-tipping policy was fantastic, so you know the price you pay is exactly what you’ll get.

A common complaint I heard among the crowd was that the pool was quite small and was noticeably crowded during sea days. And while we found many of the sit-down restaurants underwhelming, we found plenty of other things to eat in the grab-and-go or casual joints that were much more appetizing.

Virgin Voyages Pool

Nonetheless, Virgin Voyages offers extraordinary value — especially if you can book a sailing entirely with points.

Virgin Voyages Steak House

When it comes to travel, I find joy in planning every detail and enjoying a slower pace at each destination. However, planning can be tiresome at times, and a cruise on Virgin Voyages may be just the answer to travel burnout.

It’s difficult to encapsulate the extent of the entire weeklong itinerary, but I hope this review gives you a picture of what you can expect from Virgin Voyages. While my experience didn’t turn me into a full cruise convert, the hands-off approach made it easy for me to truly relax. Overall, I would happily go on another Virgin Voyages cruise in the future to switch up my travel occasionally.

A ferry on the Drin River near Koman, Albania.

‘I wanted the 17-hour trip to go slower, not faster’: readers’ favourite European journeys

The excitement of the voyage itself grabbed our tipsters as they delighted in riding trains, ferries and buses across Europe to as far afield as Norway and Turkey

Ferry through the fjord, Albania

Instead of a four-hour road trip from Koman to Fierzë, relax and enjoy the Albanian fjords via the Drin River. We reversed on to the Berisha ferry , which takes 10 cars, plus foot passengers. Everyone sits on deck, regardless of the weather, to take in the views, which began with an incredibly straight white line high in the rock, showing the water level during the rainy season. The scenery was magnificent with forest-clad hills and high, rocky mountains with various coloured strata. Occasionally, a remote, isolated house could be seen. After two hours, we began spotting small tourist boats and hardy kayakers before arriving at Fierzë. Roy Messenger

High ride on the bus, Montenegro-Croatia

A road through the mountains above Kotor Bay.

The scenic bus journey from Podgorica to Dubrovnik unveils a tapestry of natural Balkan splendour. After filling up on Njeguški steak and black risotto in the Montenegrin capital, it’s a blissful trip winding through rugged landscapes, the vistas of Kotor Bay being one of many highlights. Serpentine roads hug the coastline, offering glimpses of azure waters against cliffs adorned with lush greenery. The hues of the Adriatic Sea contrast with the earthy tones of the coast. The finale is Dubrovnik ’s ancient walls coming into view, welcoming visitors with its timeless charm and allure. Everly

Cycling adventures on Norway’s Lofoten Islands

A cyclist on the road to Nusfjord, Lofoten Islands.

The mountains of the Lofoten Islands in the Norwegian Arctic Circle are ideal for exploring by bike as you pass between them rather than over them. I’ve never seen such striking serrated peaks from a bicycle – and with such little effort. Bridges linking the islands add to the interest. I started at Svolvær and finished at the southern tip of the archipelago at Å, the prettiest of the villages, all with red wooden houses and, invariably, racks of cod hanging out to dry. You can put your bike on the bus for the return journey. Paul Kirkwood

White night delight on a Scandi ferry ride

On board the Helsinki to Stockholm ferry.

One leisurely romantic trip I enjoyed last summer was an open-air deck passage across the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to Stockholm. Even better, the route is part of Interrail, so there is 30% off the €95 one-way fare on Tallink ferries. I was lucky enough to take it in June, so watched the sun set at 3am, and then rise a couple of hours later. This time in Scandinavia is known as “white nights”. To be on the water watching the setting sun cast its rays on the waves and the moonlight play with the ripples as a ship glides towards its destination, land lights twinkling in the distance, is magical. I wanted the 17-hour journey to go slower, not faster! Ann

Following Theroux’s tracks across Europe to Istanbul

Sirkeci station.

On a quest to replicate the European leg of Paul Theroux’s The Great Railway Bazaar, I travelled from the suburbs of Manchester to Istanbul. Using an Interrail global pass , I attempted to follow the route of the Venice Simplon-Orient Express. Slow trains, fast trains, communist-era trains and graffiti-covered trains got me to my destination (plus a small detour by bus). With stops in Lausanne and Zagreb and an overnight train from Sofia, I skirted the lakes of Geneva and Maggiore, drank a cool beer in alpine Austria and kept my head down through dystopian-feeling Serbia. I marvelled at the pastel yellow stations of Croatia and felt the wonderful glow as I walked out of Sirkeci station into the wild throb of Istanbul. Lee Hanvey

Lazing our way across the Aegean for market day

Datca at sunrise.

When I was on holiday in Kos last summer I treated my parents to a ferry trip to Datça in Turkey for the day. It was a 3 1/2 -hour (about €30) return trip. Chugging out of Kos harbour, the pleasant breeze on the Aegean, was welcome, taking the heat off scorching temperatures as we sat outside. Pulling into Datça, I was immediately knocked over by the serene harbour, hillside houses and white boats moored bobbing on the water. It was market day so we enjoyed a whiff of exotic local spices and were invited to drink brewed Turkish tea by sellers who were happy to chat to us and offer us figs and dates. One seller even gave us a lift back to the ferry in his open truck to help us carry a hand-woven rug we’d bought. A beautiful sun set and some simit (a twisted bread with sesame seeds), cheese and olives we’d been given helped the return trip pass peacefully. April

The best Belgrade train trip Bar none

The scenic route … Belgrade to Bar takes 11 hours to cover.

The train trip from Belgrade to Bar must be one of the slowest in Europe, taking 11 hours to cover 296 miles, but to compensate it took me through some of the most dramatic scenery I’ve ever seen. Passing through deep gorges, canyons and mountain peaks, the train crossed more than 400 bridges and seemed to stop at every village. At one point it was overtaken by an old lady on a donkey. It’s best in summer when long daylight hours will allow you to appreciate its beauty. Peter

To Tropea, Italy, on the Coast of the Gods line

Spicy Calabrian peppers and local onions for sale in Tropea.

The train line from Pizzo to Reggio Calabria follows the Coast of the Gods, named for its turquoise seas, sheltered coves and rocky scenery. The train calls at Tropea (a town founded by Hercules in Greek mythology, that is more famous for onions), the castle and pretty beach of Scilla (of Scylla and Charybdis) and Reggio (home to lifesize ancient Greek bronze statues). Calabria makes a virtue of cucina povera , with wonderful vegetable dishes, and the local Bergamotto liqueur makes a great spritz. Sally

Winning tip: Bicycles, birds and beaches in Vlieland, the Netherlands

Sunset on Vlieland.

Two ferries to a car-free paradise. After boarding the Newcastle ferry to Amsterdam, I headed straight for the sun deck for a G&T. In Harlingen, farther north, another ferry took me in 1½ hours to the island of Vlieland. I cycled through the dunes to its endless sandy beaches. I enjoyed Kroon’s Polders, a birder’s heaven, where I spotted many spoonbills and a host of other birds. It’s so quiet. The small island has lots of cycle paths and the only village, Oost-Vlieland, has restaurants; Herbergh van Flielant was my favourite. Monique Gadella

What to know about Schengen zone, Europe’s ‘border-free’ travel system

Schengen countries allow international travelers to move freely across borders without additional passport checks.

euro voyage travel

Europe’s “border-free” Schengen zone has added travel protections for two more countries, making it easier for more people to explore the southeastern region of the continent.

Romania and Bulgaria partially joined the Schengen area on Sunday, which means visitors who arrive by air or sea from other countries in the zone can cross their borders without an ID check. Land borders will remain subject to ID checks because of opposition led by Austria, which has long cited irregular migration as a concern when it comes to welcoming the two Eastern European states into the Schengen agreement. The move comes more than a decade after Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union.

The European Commission had previously recommended that Bulgaria and Romania be admitted to join the Schengen zone, starting in 2011 and most recently in 2023. A combination of internal problems in the two countries and opposition from other countries citing irregular migration concerns — especially after the so-called “migrant crisis” of 2015 — meant they were caught in “Schengen purgatory” until now, according to Leon Züllig, a researcher and Schengen expert at Germany’s Justus Liebig University Giessen.

Welcome to Venice. That’ll Be 5 Euros.

Starting this month, tourists intending to visit the city on busy dates will be required to register on a website, and those coming for a single day will have to pay an entry fee.

People take photos and selfies from a bridge overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

Reporting from Italy

On its busiest days, Venice swells with tourists who clog the city’s narrow streets, leave behind piles of garbage and often frustrate locals. So the canal-crossed city is fighting back.

Starting on April 25, and for another 29 days scattered mostly around national holidays and weekends through mid-July, day trippers to the historic part of Venice will have to pay 5 euros, about $5.40, a measure that city officials hope will encourage people to come during less busy times.

All visitors to Venice will also have to register their presence in the city on the specified days, filling out an online form that will help officials gauge how many visitors to expect and strategize about how to handle them.

“It’s not about making money — the costs of the operation are higher than what we’re going to make,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told reporters on Thursday as Venetian officials kicked off a global advertising campaign.

Instead, said Michele Zuin, the city official in charge of budgeting and economics, the aim is “to better manage the numbers of tourists and disincentivize mass tourism, which is what creates, let’s say, the difficulty of living in this city.”

Visitors staying overnight in Venice will not have to pay, nor will those traveling there to work, to visit relatives or to study. Anyone born in the city is also exempt , as are minors under 14. And Mr. Brugnaro said there would be no cap on the number of visitors allowed in.

Rising improbably from the waters of the Venetian lagoon, the city is as delicate as it is beautiful, and in recent decades it has struggled to protect a uniqueness that is threatened by climate change and rising seas, as well as by mass tourism .

To counter that figurative and literal erosion, the city has installed giant gates at four mouths of the lagoon to keep seawater out and pavements dry, and banned cruise ships from the inner canals. Those efforts helped keep Venice off UNESCO’s list of “World Heritage in Danger” even after experts at the agency raised concerns last year that Italy had not done enough to protect the city.

From 1976 until this year, Italy had allocated funds to help safeguard Venice, and on Thursday, Mr. Brugnaro chided the country’s central government for not renewing that funding. He said he had asked the government for €1.5 billion for the next 10 years to help preserve a city with a unique heritage that requires continuous maintenance.

“We need that financing,” he said.

Occasionally, days have been so busy with tourists that the city has had to limit some streets to one-way pedestrian traffic.

Simone Venturini, the city official in charge of tourism, said of the new measures, “We will be the first city in the world to know exactly how many tourists will come to Venice that day — whether exempt or paying, they have to register.”

After registering on the website, visitors will receive a QR code — valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — that they will be required to show when entering the city at points like the train station, Piazzale Roma, the municipal parking lot, some beachfront locations and St. Mark’s Square. There will also be spot checks throughout the city.

For now, anyone arriving in Venice without a QR code will be allowed to buy it at the last minute, either on a smartphone or at kiosks set up leading up to the access points, officials said.

Transgressors will face fines of €50 to €300 plus a €10 fee, Mr. Zuin said.

The initiative is being introduced on a trial basis so that city officials can see whether the system works and how it can be improved, he said. In the future, the entry fee could be calibrated — “a sliding scale of prices,” Mayor Brugnaro said — depending on the day.

“We’re asking for collaboration,” Mr. Brugnaro said, adding that the data accumulated during the 29 days would be made public. He said that officials from other cities around the world had contacted his administration to find out more about the access system.

So far, more than 50,000 people have registered through the website — about a third of them paying for one-day visits, officials said.

“The entire world wants to come to Venice,” Mr. Venturini said at the introduction of the advertising campaign, which included a video message of the mayor speaking in various languages using A.I.-generated speech translation.

In the video, Mayor Brugnaro apologizes for any inconvenience that the new system might create. But, he said, “the city has to be protected.”

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone on Sunday, marking a new step in the two countries’ integration with the European Union.

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen area, there is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone.

The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of the 27 EU member countries, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Around 3.5 million people cross an internal border each day.

Austria vetoed Romania and Bulgaria’s admission into the Schengen zone at the end of 2022 but allowed Croatia full accession. Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007 and Croatia in 2013.

Siegfried Muresan, a Romanian Member of the European Parliament, told The Associated Press that it is “an important first step” that will benefit millions of travelers annually.

“Bulgaria and Romania have been fulfilling all criteria for joining the Schengen area for years — we are entitled to join with the terrestrial border as well,” he said, adding that it “will offer additional arguments to the last EU member state that has been vetoing the full accession.”

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called it a “well-deserved achievement” for Romania that he said will benefit citizens who can travel more easily and will bolster the economy.

“We have a clear and firmly assumed government plan for full accession to the Schengen Area by the end of the year,” he said.

The EU’s executive branch, the European Commission, has said for more than a decade that Romania and Bulgaria both meet the technical criteria for full accession, which requires unanimous support from their partners. Both countries have agreed to implement random security screening at airports and maritime borders to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime.

“Bulgaria’s full accession to Schengen will happen by the end of 2024,” Kalin Stoyanov, Bulgaria’s interior minister, told reporters on Sunday. “We showed and continue to show to illegal migrants that they should not take the road to Europe through Bulgaria.”

The lifting of border control is expected to facilitate operations at Bulgaria’s four international airports, which in 2023 saw nearly 11 million passengers, according to official data.

The airport in the capital, Sofia, serves as the biggest hub for Schengen flights which constitute 70% of all flights, airport representatives said.

While the eased regulations are expected to positively impact the tourism sector, members of the European Parliament have voiced concerns about long queues at the EU’s land borders and the impact it can have on trade in the bloc’s single market, as well as the health and safety of drivers.

Truck drivers are frequently stuck in kilometers-long queues at the borders of both Romania and Bulgaria. The Union of International Carriers in Bulgaria estimates delays cost the sector tens of millions of euros each year.

McGrath reported from Sighisoara, Romania.
