Thanks to year-round mild temperatures, easy transit options, and a plethora of things to do, you don’t need to worry about only being able to sightsee during the day when visiting Mexico City.

There are so many things to do in Mexico City at night that allow you to see the city from a different perspective. 

In the evening, Mexico City comes alive. Restaurants and shops are open late, bars are buzzing, and people are out and about at all hours.

Mexico City is known for its food and for good reason. Home to some of the most fantastic restaurants in the world, one of the best things to do in Mexico City at night is to eat. Whether you’re seeking Mexican, Italian, Asian, or everything in between, you can find it here on any budget.

Mexico City is particularly famous for its fine dining options, however.  While you’re in the city, be sure to book a tasty dining experience you’ll remember forever. 

If you’re interested in trying a tasting menu at a Michelin-recommended place, head to the Polanco neighborhood to try Pujol or Quintonil .

Both of these restaurants have won numerous awards and offer fantastic tasting menus highlighting traditional Mexican cuisine. You definitely need to make reservations far in advance, however. 

If you can’t get a table or are looking for something a little more budget-friendly, there are two other places I’d recommend in Roma for fine dining.

Em is a fantastic Japanese/ Mexican fusion.

They offer a tasting menu that I thought was better than Pujol, as well as ala carte options.

Lastly, Rosetta is a renowned Italian fusion restaurant run by an incredible local female chef in La Roma neighborhood.

The food only makes Mexico City worth a visit .

2. Visit the Museums At Night

On the last Wednesday of the month, you can visit some of the best museums in the city at night. “Noche de Museos” is a really fun activity to do if you’re solo traveling and a great way to learn about history, art, and culture.

Many of the museums put on special programs or events during this time and some are even free to enter. 

Mexico City has the most museums per capita, so this is a fantastic way to visit some at night. It’s important to note that not all museums participate, so it’s best to look up the museums you want to see beforehand and confirm that they are a part of Museum night. 

In general, some of the best museums in Mexico City are the Frida Kahlo Museum, MUNAL, Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Museum of Anthropology.

If you have to pick one, the Frida Kahlo Museum is one of the most famous museums in Mexico City.

It’s located in Coyoacan, a neighborhood filled with rich history and culture that is also worth seeing.

3. Take a Salsa Dancing Class

If you like to dance, then why not do as the locals do and learn some salsa dancing? Participating in Mexican salsa dancing is one of the best things you can do at night.

There are numerous places to take salsa classes in Mexico City as well as popular spots where locals go to just dance salsa together. Both are great options for solo travelers. 

The Condesa neighborhood has the most accessible options for travelers. If you’re looking to take a class, I’d suggest visiting Mama Ruba , a Latin salsa dance hall.

They have lessons on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9 pm. If you want to just dance salsa, head to Parque Mexico and join the crowd after 5 pm or check out the popular Pata Negra . 

4. Have a Night Picnic in Chapultepec Park’s Botanic Gardens

Chapultepec Park is one of the biggest urban parks in the world, almost twice the size of Central Park. Located in Polanco, this expansive park is worth exploring and one of the best free things to do in Mexico City. 

A fun way to experience Chapultepec Park in the evening is to have a night picnic in the Botanic Gardens . Once a month you can have a romantic solo or date night here.

You can either bring your own food and enter for free or purchase a picnic basket at the gardens for $300 Mexican pesos. 

5. Go Out Dancing

If salsa isn’t your thing but you love to dance at the club, then you’re in luck in Mexico City. Throughout the city, you’ll find numerous clubs to socialize and dance to live music.

Most of the clubs will play a variation of house music and are located in Roma or Juarez. 

A very popular nightclub with live DJs to dance to is Departamento, in Roma Norte. Cafe Paraiso is another hip nightclub that’s fun to dance at. 

If you’re in Mexico City on a Friday night, then a visit to Patrick Miller is a must.

This eighties-themed club is only open on Friday nights and attracts a crowd that takes dancing seriously. You’ll often see dance battles here from people that are professional dancers. 

6. See a Soccer Game

If you like sports, then you have to see a football game while in Mexico City. Soccer, or football as they call it in Mexico, is one of the most popular sports in the country.

There are several stadiums throughout the city to watch a match at but the most popular one is Estadio Azteca .

It’s also one of the largest stadiums in the world. You haven’t been to a football game until you’ve been to a Mexican football game.

Expect an incredibly lively and engaged crowd, massive beers bigger than your head, and to be at the game for several hours. 

If you want to see a soccer match in Mexico City you can buy your tickets at the door or book your tickets online at Ticketmaster.

They can cost anything from 200-700 Mexican pesos, depending on the game you’re seeing. Alternatively, you can book an Airbnb experience to go with a local guide. 

To get to the stadium, you can take an Uber or the metro but traffic will most likely be intense, as will the crowds on transit.

I’d recommend going several hours earlier and exploring a nearby neighborhood before the game to beat the crowds. If you’re visiting Estadio Azteca, it’s just south of Coyoacan, a beautiful neighborhood with tons of things to do. 

7. Take a Cooking Class

A fun thing to do at night in Mexico City is to take a cooking class! If you’re traveling alone, it’s an easy way to socialize over a delicious meal and learn about Mexican cuisine. 

Most cooking classes are hosted during the day and involve a market tour, but you can book private evening cooking classes easily through Airbnb or Viator. Learn how to make traditional Mexican dishes like salsa, tacos, mole, or tamales from scratch with a local chef. They’ll often host the classes at their house.

If your days are already booked, or you only have one night in Mexico City, why not do a night tour? Many tour companies offer the chance to book a private night tour and explore the best things the city has to offer. 

Alternatively, some tour companies just offer night tours to give you a different perspective of Mexico City. This is a fantastic way to beat the crowds and learn more about Mexican culture.

There’s nothing like biking down Paseo de la Reforma, wandering Coyoacan, or eating tacos in Roma at night time.

9. Visit a Speakeasy 

Some of the best bars in Mexico City are speakeasies. You’ll find most of the speakeasies in the city are in Juarez, particularly in the Zona Rosa area.

However, there are plenty of speakeasies in Roma, Condesa, and Polanco. Some offer live music, a cozy atmosphere, or unique decor.

Be sure to make a reservation if you want to get in – they fill up quickly and some require reservations now. 

It’s a good idea to research the speakeasy beforehand so you can easily find the address and the entrance to get in.

My favorite speakeasies in Mexico City are Hanky Panky for the ambiance, Tokyo Music Bar for the cocktails, and Leonor for dancing.  

10. Soak Up Rooftop Views

The best way to see Mexico City at night is from above. Whether you’d like to dine above the city, sip a cocktail with a view , or listen to music with the stars, there’s a rooftop option for all of the above. 

Stop by Torre Latinoamerica for panoramic views of the city. It’s one of the city’s major landmarks, as it’s been internationally recognized as the first skyscraper built on an active seismic area.

You can simply go up to the top and admire the city’s lights from below, or have a meal or drink at the restaurant. This is hands down Mexico City’s best viewpoint. 

If you want to enjoy a rooftop dinner, check out Ling Ling near Polanco for sushi over the city lights.

Alternatively, head to Balcon del Zocalo for a great view of Plaza de la Constitución, Mexico City’s main square.

If you’re looking for beautiful sunset views and cocktails, visit Hotel Condesa DF in the Condesa neighborhood. 

Lastly, if you’re hoping to get a good view of the historic and beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes, you’ll need to get on a rooftop.

Head to Finca Don Porfirio for a late-night espresso. They are located on top of the Sears building and open until 8 pm. Drinks are not special but the view is!

11. Enjoy a Street Food Tour 

One of the best things to do in CDMX is to experience traditional street food during the night.

There are so many food stalls and markets selling the best tacos and esquites you’ll ever taste.

Food stands are particularly lively in the evening when you’ll find locals enjoying dinner or stopping for late-night eats after a night out.

Not only is street food delicious, but it’s also the most budget-friendly food you’ll find in Mexico City, with many street tacos starting at 15 pesos. 

If you want to learn about traditional Mexican food while tasting it, I’d suggest taking a street food tour.

12. Eat Churros and People Watch at the Park

One of my favorite things to do in Mexico City is to get churros and hot chocolate and watch the crowds at the park.

The best place to do this is at the first and most famous churreria in the city, El Moro . They have several locations throughout the city which will all be packed in the evenings. 

If you have some free time and want to make eating churros an experience, I’d suggest going to the Condesa location and sitting outside of Parque Mexico.

You can observe the happenings in the park such as live music, street performers, dance or workout classes, and dogs playing. This is a fun and cheap thing to do at night in Mexico City. 

If you’re in Polanco, you can have a similar experience at the El Moro location in front of Parque Lincoln. 

13. Sign Up for a Bar Crawl

One of the best things to do, and the pillar of Mexico City nightlife, is to go drinking at the lively cantinas and trendy bars found on practically every street in the city.

I love going out in Roma and Condesa where you can find some of the best bars to drink craft beer, mezcal, natural wine, or fun cocktails.

If you’re not comfortable heading to bars solo, why not book a bar crawl so you can still experience the Mexico City nightlife?

14. Watch a Drag Show

One of my personal favorite things to do in Mexico City at night is to see a Drag Show. There are several options throughout the city but one of Mexico City’s best drag shows is Sirenito .

They host super fun performances with the best impersonators, hip music, and often a somewhat famous crowd. Shows run Thursday-Sunday in Polanco, Roma, and Condesa. 

My favorite show is the one in the Condesa neighborhood on Saturdays. It costs $350 Mexican pesos and you need to pay in cash.

You can reserve your table by messaging them on Instagram but be warned that their weekend slots are often booked up a few weeks in advance. 

If can’t get a reservation, there are several other more casual drag shows in Mexico City such as Thursday nights at Blow Bar in Zona Rosa. 

15. Attend a Lucha Libre Match

A trip to Mexico City isn’t complete without seeing the famous Lucha Libre match. Lucha Libre is one of the most popular activities that are unique to Mexico and a really fun thing to do solo. 

Lucha libre is the term for professional Mexican wrestling.

The luchadores (Mexican wrestlers) are known for wearing bright and bold costumes and theatrical performances.

During Lucha libre matches you’ll notice that the luchadores wear colorful masks to keep their identity a secret.

Luchadores are very iconic in Mexican culture – you’ll often see street art featuring them and markets selling replica masks. 

Lucha Libre shows are held at Arena Mexico and the most popular night to go is Friday.

16. See a Mariachi Show in Plaza Garibaldi

One of the best things to do while in Mexico City is to see a traditional mariachi show. While there are several places to see mariachi bands, nothing compares to heading down to Plaza Garibaldi to hear awesome mariachi Mexican music. 

Throughout the plaza, there are several different restaurants to choose from that host incredible performances.

I’d recommend making a reservation at one so you can enjoy some margaritas, queso, and the show. Afterward, walk around the square to see street performers, vendors, lights, and food carts. 

One thing to note is that while Plaza Garibaldi is a very popular spot for tourists, it’s located right next to one of Mexico City’s least desirable neighborhoods.

SAFETY TIP – If you’re heading to Plaza Garibaldi at night, it’s important to use your street smarts and never leave the square. Get picked up right outside your venue – don’t go walking for public transit or out of the area. 

17. Go to the Movies

If you’re looking for a quiet night out, or have some free time, why not head to the movies in Mexico City? There are several large movie theater chains throughout CDMX, like Cinemex.

If you’re interested in a more unique cinema experience, however, then you need to check out some of Mexico City’s fantastic independent cinemas. 

If you’re close to the Roma neighborhood, I’d recommend Cine Tonala , a hip indy theater. Here you’ll find a bar and different events throughout the week, as well as independent movies playing. 

Just outside of Coyoacan is Cineteca Nacional de Mexico , one of the best independent movie theaters. It’s famous for its unique architecture and beloved locally. 

If you’re downtown, you can also visit La Casa del Cine MX , a cool arthouse theater with a library, bar, and vintage feel. 

Lastly, if you’re visiting Mexico City during the summer, you can see an outdoor movie in Chapultepec park at their boat cinema. 

18. Visit the “Witch Market”

Mexico City is filled with unique things to do but I think Mercado de Sonora is close to the top of that list. This traditional market is one of the oldest markets in Mexico, with a rich history. It’s located in the Centro, just outside of Mexico City’s main square.

What makes it special however is its association with santeria. It’s often called the witch market, due to one of the mystical sections that sell items you won’t find at other traditional markets.

In this corridor, you’ll find vendors selling items typically associated with the occult and herbology. You’ll even see practicing shamans and fortune tellers.

Mercado de Sonora is also a very popular spot for shopping during Dia de los Muertos , a national holiday in Mexico. 

Mercado de Sonora is open until 9 pm, but I’d recommend going in the early evening if you’re visiting alone.

You can also book guided tours of the market, which I’d highly suggest doing so you can learn more about the history and successfully navigate this rather large marketplace.

19. Watch the Teotihuacan Night Experience Show

The Teotihuacan pyramids are a Unesco World Heritage Site and some of the tallest pyramids in Mexico. While visiting the Teotihuacan pyramids is one of the best things to do during any trip to Mexico City, a different way to see them is at night. 

In the evening, Teotihuacan puts on a night light show that is very unique. You’ll first get to explore the pyramids, walking through the road of the dead to the pyramid of the sun and then the moon.

You’ll have an audio guide for this experience, as well as one for the night show.  After the tour, you can observe a 35-minute light show with a narration of the history of Teotihuacan. 

To go, you need to buy tickets through Ticketmaster beforehand which cost 500 Mexican pesos. Night Experience Shows are only offered from November-June on specific nights of the week.

Since getting to and from Teotihuacan is somewhat tricky, it’s best to organize a taxi or private transport beforehand or go with a tour.  

20. Take a Boat Ride on Xochimilco

Xochimilco Ecological Park is a former Aztec waterway about one hour outside of the city and one of Mexico City’s Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Known as the “Venice of Mexico” it’s become super popular due to the colorful boats that you can ride on throughout the canals. 

This has become one of Mexico’s top tourist attractions, but it’s also a very popular activity for locals. Many people go to Xochimilco to celebrate graduations, birthdays, and even weddings. 

While this is a common activity during the daytime, you can also visit Xochimilco at night. 

At night, it becomes even more of a party than during the day. Expect lots of drinking, fun light setups, and lively music.

Mariachi bands often hop between boats during the experience. You can go by yourself, but if you’re traveling solo, I’d recommend booking a boat tour so you can have fun with others and learn about the area. 

You’ll most likely board your boat at the main port, but I’d recommend confirming the address with your guide so you end up at the right entrance.

One important thing to note is that you should never walk at night, even if you’re not alone. After 10 pm, or in quiet areas, always take an Uber to your next destination.

Make sure to double-check the address of where you’re going and keep your wits about you. It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if you’re traveling as a solo female.

The neighborhoods around San Angel and Metro Copilco also make excellent choices for mingling among a cool, younger hipster crowd. So many options. So what about a bit of everything? Then Roma or Condesa; where most of the bars and clubs in Mexico City are located, is the best bet. Begin your evening with a drink and a small appetizer, in a cozy Mexican pavement café or bar.

We had a great time with Lando wandering around Condesa and eating delicious tacos. Lando then took us on the Metrobus towards downtown and sent us a bunch of recommendations for the rest of your day.

I could not have asked for a better introduction to Mexico City than Marisol’s hosted experience. She took the time to understand what I was interested in and tailored the day accordingly. I loved that she showed me a slice of the real Mexico, always ensuring I was comfortable and safe. Her knowledge of the history and architecture of Mexico City was very impressive, and her love and passion for her hometown shone through. The highlight of the day was when she arranged for a mariachi band to serenade me on my 50th birthday! It is a memory I will keep with me always! Marisol is a wonderful human and I really enjoyed spending time with her. I hope to catch her again in Australia, where I can play host!

Ready to get up close and personal with one of Mexico’s most popular sports? It’s going to get exciting!

Our unique Mexico City tour starts at a typical Mexican pub called a cantina. Here, you enjoy a couple of drinks (at your own expense) and get to know the rest of the travelers on your tour. Most importantly, though, your local Urban Adventures guide gives you a briefing of what’s in store for the rest of the evening, including the basic rules of the eccentric lucha libre .

As we drink, you learn about the story of tequila and mezcal, and your guide gets you up to date on Mexico’s world-famous party culture, from mariachis and  jarochos  to  banda  music.

To keep the excitement of the night going, we head to another cantina by the Mexican musician’s square of Garibaldi, where we experience mariachi music and many other Mexican music bands. We enjoy the atmosphere of the square for about an hour before heading out to the arena to support the best  luchadores  of the country.

Lucha libre (a.k.a. Mexican wrestling), is the second most-watched sport in Mexico and hands down one of the most exciting things you can do while visiting Mexico City. For a truly local experience, we hop on the subway to the Arena Mexico to catch the fight. We get you good seats in the arena so you can truly live the experience and see the best matches of the night.

Immerse yourself in the crazy, exciting, energetic atmosphere of the arena and really get into it — scream and whistle whatever you want — while you experience unique and dramatic  lucha libre  moves like  La Quebradora ,  El Martineta ,  La Segadora , and many others. You get to watch some of the best wrestlers in the country in an experience that is sure to leave you awestruck for the two hours you spend at the fight.

At the end of this unreal experience, you have time to buy some souvenirs, like the mask of the best wrestler you saw in the show, so you can take some fun photos with your masks on.

After all the dancing, singing, drinking, and cheering, we’re ready to go back to where it all began, our meeting point, where your guide can offer suggestions for where to continue the party. If you prefer to hit the hay, you can take a cab back to your hotel with the help of your local tour guide.

Additional information

Dress standard: We recommend dressing conservatively as we visit non-touristy areas. Long trousers or jeans and a t-shirt are the recommended attire. Leave your valuables, such as passports and credit cards, in the hotel and bring a small amount of spending cash. During the rainy season (May to September), we recommend bringing a raincoat or umbrella.

Your trip: For your Urban Adventure, you are in a small group of 12 people maximum.

Additional Information: The order of the activities varies on Sundays because we go to the  lucha libre  first. Please note that, if the group size exceeds eight persons, then we take private transport instead of public transport.

IMPORTANT NOTE: No cameras or bottles are allowed in the arena. If you bring a camera, you have to leave it at the entrance in the camera storage. Pictures with cellphones are allowed without flash.

I had the best time on this experience. Julio is an amazing guide – kind and knowledgeable, with lots of fantastic information. Best of all, he might be the biggest Lucha LIbre fan ever – half the of the fun of my night out was watching him get into the matches. At the end of the the night, he and another guest walked me safely back to my hotel as I was traveling alone – I really appreciated that he went above and beyond. Great night of Mexican Culture (if you can call Wrestling culture!) but maybe visit the one Cantina for drinks and food rather than two. Also the tour description doesn’t make it clear that eating at the Cantina is part of the night so we ate early, sadly. We were blessed with Julio as our trainee guide (who we’d had the day before at the Temples of the sun and Moon) and he is a star. Went above and beyond in helping us secure an Uber at the end of the night too. The lucha libre is a hoot.

Cesar is a grest guide! He took the 4 of us to the most mexican way to have fun! Once we got together, we walked to the “Metro” (subway) and after few stops we showed up in a couple of blocks to the Arena Mexico where we participated in the traditional Lucha Libre (Mexican Wrestling) He gave us wrestler masks as a gift! after cheering our favorites wrestlers and giving us the explanation of what we were seeing, we ride back to Mexico City downtown where we went to this incredible museum of the tequila and mezcal where Cesar gave us a great explanation of this very old process, then we gad shots included!)once we tried the different flavors of the Mezcal and Tequila he took us to this cantina where we were able to ask for any drink we wanted while the Mariachi was playing for us, Cesar singing, of course! Totally recommend it!

What a great night out! The first bar was really nice and had a great view of the city from the 30th floor. The mariachi square was cool to see and the performers were amazing. I had a great time. My guide, Diego Ferreira, did an excellent job from beginning to end. He was so knowledgeable and sincere, it was like a night out with an old friend; drinking, talking, exchanging stories made it one of the best times I had on my trip. Being middle aged (55) myself, I enjoyed his youthful exuberance in teaching about the culture and his instruction on the ways to drink tequila and mezcal reminded me of my own student days, then the Lucha Libre wrestling was completely off the charts, exciting and energetic. I loved every minute of it and would do it all over again. I cannot thank Diego enough for making the first day my trip so memorable and can highly recommend him to anyone looking for fun, exciting and fascinating “guys’ night out.”

This was one of the highlights of our travel to Mexico city – Milton was an awesome host and took care of everyone. The Tequila Museum was great, and the Luche Libre wrestling was a fantastic experience! WHAT FUN! The only problem was that we had a very large group, so whilst there was two guides to take care of everyone, getting to and from the destinations, ordering drinks/dinner took longer than expected and as such we were late to the wrestling.

I wholeheartedly recommend this fun, friendly, informative tour! It was a highlight of my trip to Mexico City. I had an more unusual experience as apart from one other American, English-speaking guest, the rest of the guests on the tour were Mexico City locals on a work night out. The guide, Rodrigo, made sure I was not left out at any stage and in the end it turned out to be an even more immersive experience. We started by having drinks in the Latinoamericana buiklding with incredible views of the city. We then went to a fantastic torta restaurant for delicious pork sandwiches and micheladas. We then went to Garibaldi Square for mezcal and a mariachi serenade. Being with a group of people enthusiastically singing along to songs they knew by heart and sharing a toast was such a thrill. After that it was Lucha Libre! SO MUCH FUN. So entertaining. We were whizzed back to the city and overall it was an exhilarating, entertaining experience. Highly recommended!

The entire evening was great! I enjoyed getting to experience various cantinas, learning about some of the traditions in Mexico, including Mariachi bands and cantina culture in general. The places we visited showed a wide variety of what Mexico city has to offer and the pacing was perfect to allow for conversation, learning, but purpose. A great tour! Lucha libre was great camp fun! So was the Garibaldi square! One small problem was that it did not match the tour description exactly – the itinerary was somewhat different from the one advertised – we started with Lucha Libre and then went to Mirador Torre Latino followed by a trip to the Cantina in Garibaldi square. We also didn’t get a wrestler’s mask as a souvenir (a small thing but it was listed as an inclusion in the itinerary).

Our guide was great. Fun and very personable. Very much enjoyed spending time with him. I think he put us in the “safe section” for Lucha Libre. I would have been perfectly happy to dive into the midst of the crowd. The opening drink at the observation deck was fine and an opportunity to chat and get to know everyone, but I think a place more crowded with locals would have been better.

Transportation was disorganized and this was probably due to poor planning of timing. We spent too much time at certain places. so Itzel told us we had to take a cab to Lucha Libre. After waiting for 15 mins, she made us walk to the subway. We should have just taken the subway all along, even though the subway was sketchy. We only got an hour at Lucha Libre and given the name of the tour, it would have been nice to have at least 2 hours there.

Luis was a phenomenal guide who knows everyone at the bars and the areaa for Lucha Libre. There is no better way to enjoy a night out in Mexico City. Backstage meeting with one of the wrestlers was a real highlight. He also brought us to a great bar with beautiful view on Torre LatinoAmerica, followed by awesome torta at a clean, cheap shop, then cap the night off with tequila tasting at a cantina. My husband’s 20-someting-yr-old cousins were in town and we had a BLAST on this Urban Adventure. Much more than “just Friday Night Lucha Libre” the evening was a bit on the debaucherous side (in a good way)! First of all… LUIS is AWESOME. As soon as we met him I knew we were in good hands. We wandered down the crowded street from the Zocalo until Luis whisked us up to the top of Torre LatinoAmerica where we enjoyed killer views of Mexico City while sipping on cocktails. Then we settled the belly with a quick stop for an authentic torta (yummy pork sandwich) before continuing our stroll to the famous El Tenampa cantina in Plaza Garibaldi for tequila and mariachis. You’ll read about how shady Plaza Garibaldi can be… but you’re with LUIS! And Luis knows everyone and totally takes care of you!!! I’m telling you….This guy is a magician! We were totally charmed. And on to the main event via quick metro-ride! Once again Luis knows everyone along the way from peanut-vendors to the artist of hand-painted caps to the ushers who take you to your seat. You can read all about Lucha Libre so I wont go there – but I will tell you, if you want to be seated next to the guy that is screaming the most colorful and unique language in The Arena — you want to be next to Luis! #localsknow Don’t go any other way — Go in style with Luis!

Loved the whole thing except the initial bar-stop, which was billed as a visit to a “cantina” but instead was an excrutiatingly noisy rock-bar, pounding music, impossible to talk. Since it was our very first stop, we couldn’t actually converse or get to know each other — otherwise, all was great later, with the wrestling and the mariachis.

I recommend you book a tour through Airbnb Experiences or Trip Advisor, some of them include free Beer and making your own luchador Mask as a souvenir. 

2)Visit the National Palace. 

The National Palace is a historic government building located in the heart of Mexico City. Every night at 8pm, there is a free light show that projects images onto the facade of the building. The light show tells the story of Mexican history and culture, and it is a great way to learn more about Mexico.

Keep in Mind that you are not allowed to go inside the National Palace, because this is the place where the President lives however the view at night is incredible for you to enjoy. If you want the perfect picture I recommend you visit the “Hotel de la Ciudad de México” Rooftop.

3)Take a night tour of the city.

There are many different night tours available in Mexico City, so you can choose one that fits your interests. Some tours focus on the city’s history, while others focus on its food, culture, or nightlife.

I recommend the company Turibus for touring the city, it offers multiple routes for you to take throughout the city and also some of them available at night. The most popular tours and the ones I recommend the most is the one in “Centro Histórico” “Reforma” and “Coyoacan”

4)Visit a museum. 

Mexico City has over 150 museums, many of which are open at night. On the last Wednesday of every month, there is a special event called “Noche de Museos” (Night of Museums) when over 40 museums are open to the public for free.

My favorite Museums to tour is definitely the “Papalote Museo del Niño” “Museo Nacional de Arte” and “Museo de Antropología” Tickets for night at the museum can be purchased on these select Museums, just check their social media posts when the Special Nights are announced.

5)Catch a live music show. 

Mexico City has a vibrant music scene, and there are live shows happening every night of the week. You can find everything from mariachi bands to rock concerts to jazz clubs.

If you are looking for Mariachi Bands you should definitely check the Garibaldi Square at night, this is the ultimate place for a Mariachi Experience. On the other hand, I love Jazz Music and Mexico City offers Amazing Jazz Clubs for this, some of them are: Zinco Jazz Club, Parker and Lennox Speakeasy and the new Club Midnight Monkey.

6)Go dancing.

Mexico City is known for its nightlife, and there are many different clubs to choose from. Whether you’re into salsa, reggaeton, or electronic music, you’re sure to find a club that’s right for you. 

The ultimate Salsa Club for you to go dancing is definitely the Mama Rumba Club in the Roma Neighborhood, be ready to Dance: Salsa, Cumbia and Bachata all Night and make new friends.

7)Visit a cantina. 

Cantinas are traditional Mexican bars that serve up delicious food and drinks. They’re a great place to meet locals and experience Mexican culture.You can find multiple Cantinas in the City Center of Mexico City “Centro Histórico” that offer many types of food and drinks and rich in Mexican Traditions. However if you´re in the Coyoacan Neighborhood which is a very popular zone be sure to check “Cantina la Coyoacana” its one of Mexico City’s most iconic Cantina with Mariachi and tons of Mezcal and Tequila.

8)Try the street food.

 Mexico City is a foodie’s paradise, and there are street food vendors selling everything from tacos to tamales to quesadillas. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, such as al pastor tacos at Tizoncito Restaurant and churros con chocolate at Churreria el Moro.

9)Visit a food market.

Mexico City has many different food markets, where you can find everything from fresh produce to prepared foods. Some of the most popular food markets include Mercado de San Juan, Mercado de La Merced, and Mercado de Medellín.

21)Visit the Best Restaurants in the World Located in Mexico City.

There are three best in the world restaurants located in Mexico City according to the 50 best Restaurants in the world, these are: Quintonil (9th place),Pujol (13th place) and Rosetta (49th place and brand new addition). My suggestion is that you book a table at least 3 months in advance, these restaurants are hard to get a reservation so just keep in mind to constantly monitor availability through opentable. 

Did I mention that this 2023 Mexico has now the best Chef in the World? Well its Elena Reygadas from the restaurant Rosetta that was recently given the title by the 50 best Restaurants committee. So be sure to check this fascinating restaurant.

22)Go see a Broadway Musical in Mexico City.

Mexico City also offers some selected Broadway Musicals for all those theater fans out there especially in the Polanco Neighborhhod. At this moment the Broadway Show Anastasia is playing at the Teatro Telcel in Plaza Carso at the Polanco Neighborhood.

23)Get Tacos in the most Famous Taco Place in Town.

 Looking for the Best Tacos in Town? My favorite tacos are definitely Taqueria Orinoco located in the Roma and Condesa Neighborhood. You have to order the famous Tacos al Pastor and their signature taco the “Chicharron” this is a Pork Belly Taco and its amazing.

24)Go visit Coyoacan Neighborhood at Night.

Coyoacan is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Mexico City with multiple attractions like the Frida Kahlo Museum and its Cathedral. At Night this place is really magical, you can find multiple dining options or some snacks like Churros and Hot Coffee at the famous Coffee Place “El Jarocho”

There is no shortage of nightlife in Mexico City, being the second most populous city in North America, you’ll find some of the best bars and clubs in all of Mexico.

Located in the Valle de México at a high elevation of 2,240 m, it does actually get cold at night, but that is no deterrent to the partygoers of the city.

With bars and clubs offering everything from salsa to reggaeton, house to techno; there is such a varied music scene and there’s sure to be something for everyone.

We’ve compiled a list of the best bars, clubs and up and coming spots to enjoy the Mexico City nightlife the proper way.

Mexico City Nightlife

In a vibrant city of more than 20 million people, it can be daunting to know which area to stay in and where to go for a night out on the town. Don’t worry, we have you covered.

Most clubs are open until 3 or 4 am, and of course, you can find clubs if you’re looking to stay up until sunrise.

Where to Party in Mexico City?

As it’s such a big city there are obviously many districts and neighborhoods you could find yourself in. Each one has a unique take on nightlife, whether it be with locals or with foreigners.

The most popular places to party are for sure Roma, Condesa, and Polanco , and here you’ll experience the best Mexico City nightlife in the city.

Polanco is probably the most expensive place to party in all of Mexico City. With bars/lounges such as Scotch , expect to break the bank by paying for a few cocktails.

There are also popular clubs like Republica and Janis (mentioned below) with upper-class clientele.

Roma and Condesa can be combined into one category as they are within walking distance of one another (20 minutes). Here you’ll find the highest concentration of bars and nightclubs in the city.

Here you’ll find mostly foreigners as the area has been mostly gentrified. You can find super cheap bars/clubs and also pricier/fancier places.

Centro Historico is the old town of Mexico City and here you’ll find old clubs and bars such as Pata Negra, Terraza Rooftop bar, Donceles 88, and Cultural Roots , a fun and eccentric nightclubs that usually play reggaeton music.

Mexico City Nightlife Costs

Most people assume the Mexico City nightlife to be cheap compared to some first-world countries like the US, Canada, or UK.

While there may be some very cheap towns and beach towns in Mexico, Mexico City is typically more expensive when going out compared to other places in the country.

You’ll definitely spend less than going out in say Miami, New York City, or Montreal, but don’t expect to be having a night out for only $15.

Here is a basic outline of what you’ll typically pay on a good night out in CDMX:

• Cover for entry to some clubs: $5-$30
• Cerveza (national beer such as Corona): $1-$7
• Cocktails: $4-$15
• A shot of Tequila or Mezcal: $1-10
• Bottle of liquor at a club: $50-200
• Bar or finger food: $5-$15

Of course, this depends on what area of Mexico City and what bars you’re hanging out at. If you’re drinking at Cottoritos for example, you’ll only pay $1 for a beer or a shot.

If you’re partying in Polanco you’re gonna pay at least $6 for a beer. A bar like Gin Gin or Carajillo will set you back around $20 per cocktail in most cases.

If you’re on a budget, our recommendation is to pre-drink at home with friends first before going out or start somewhere cheap like McCarthy’s Irish Pub or Cottoritos.

Best Bars in Mexico City

Jardin paraiso.

A popular place among foreigners and Mexicans looking to get amongst the Mexico City nightlife is Jardin Paraiso. With one of the best atmospheres of any bar out there it is a great place to warm up the night if you can get in.

Typically a 200 peso cover on weekends, the music is a mix of salsa, reggaeton, and pop.

Usually packed by 10 o’clock with a mob of partygoers banging on the door outside, get there nice and early if you want to get in, or try to get a reservation.

Bar Pata Negra

What used to be one of the most popular Mexico City nightlife spots sadly closed due to the pandemic. However, there are two other spots, one is a famous live music venue located in the historic center of CDMX, come here for cocktails, good food, and great music.

There’s also a Pata Negra in Juarez with library-themed decor that’s worth checking out also if you’re closer to the Roma area.

Toledo Rooftop

If you’re into rooftop bars with a great social atmosphere, then Toledo Rooftop is one of your best options for Mexico City nightlife.

While the place is very upscale and incredibly expensive (90 pesos for a beer and 250-300) for a cocktail), it’s a perfect spot to meet other expats and locals and enjoy the impressive views of the city along Chapultepec avenue.

Jardin Juarez

An open-air beer garden that turns into a nightclub every weekend, Jardin Juarez is one of our favourite spots to experience the best Mexico City nightlife.

With beers at only 50 pesos and cocktails starting at 100 pesos, it’s the perfect spot to pre-drink before going out or simply spend the night here if you like the DJ that starts playing reggaeton and Top 40 around 10 pm. Make sure to arrive before 9:30 or you’ll be lining up for hours as there is no cover.

There are three floors, including a newly opened rooftop, with a very different vibing to the tunes.

A popular bar to pre-drink before heading out or before heading upstairs to Club Phoenix. Usually chilled electronic vibes with an outdoor patio and good cocktails.

Xaman is a hidden cocktail bar with chilled-out, mellow music, and a dark, ambient vibe. Inside you’ll find an upper-class crowd sipping on fancy and expensive cocktails.

Definitely, a must-visit spot, but I wouldn’t go here every night or you’ll break the bank.

If you’re looking to get amongst the Mexico City nightlife on a budget Cottoritos is probably the cheapest place to drink, at least in the Roma/Condesa area.

The beers and shots going for only 20 pesos, it’s definitely the perfect place to warm up and get started before heading to the pricier bars.

Spread across three different floors with loud music at the top, they also serve cheap food of around 20-60 pesos depending on the dish.

P ulqueria Los Insurgentes

If you’re looking for something with a bit more of a local vibe, this is your place.

Pulqueria los Insurgentes is a casual restaurant/bar serving pulque, a milk-colored liquor made from certain types of agave, it has quite a kick and will knock you on your feet.

Marketeatro

If you’re a gringo and into salsa and bachata music then you’ll love Marketeatro in Roma Norte. Every Friday night a bunch of foreigners and Mexicans alike descends on this food market/beer hall for salsa lessons.

Later on in the night, it turns into a full-on free for all where people dance with other random strangers. This is a good place to start if you’re looking for excellent Mexico City nightlife.

A little different from the others as this place only serves craft beer, but wow what a selection! With typically more than 30 craft beers on tap, mostly from Mexican breweries, you’ll never get bored here!

Calle Genova

While not a bar per se, but rather a row of several bars along a popular walking street. If you’re looking to experience Mexico City nightlife from the perspective of the locals then here is a good place in the heart of the city.

Best Mexico City Nightclubs

Departamento.

Undoubtedly one of the most popular bars/nightclubs for Mexico City nightlife, especially among gringos and foreigners, it’s more of a lounge and turns into a club later on in the night, typically with house music.

With three floors, including a rooftop where people congregate to talk, smoke and drink, it’s an easy place to meet new people, and a great place to drink and party.

Drinks are a little pricier than other venues and usually, there is a line to enter, so show up a bit earlier (10-11)

Montana Disco

Discover the hidden charm of Montana, subtly tucked away behind the savory haven that is Coppola Vinyl Pizza restaurant out front. Nestled unnoticeably in a street-concealed corner, a mere passage through its hefty curtains immerses you into an enchanting mirror vortex that elevates the experience exponentially.

Montana is a future-retro discotheque, manifested in authentic speakeasy fashion, seemingly sprung from a period or sci-fi film. Step inside and become enveloped in a mist of dry ice and glittering disco balls, illuminated by a symphony of neon yellow lights and pulsating to the beat of the nightly DJ’s tunes.

Opening its chain at 11:00 PM, it doesn’t take long for Montana to burst into life, filling swiftly with beats that promise to keep your feet moving till dawn. Ladies, your comfort and safety are paramount here—with protective measures like lidded cups and emergency codes, ensuring your night is not only lively but also secure.

Bombay Club Roma

Formerly known as Valhalla club in Roma Norte, Bombay club has recently become quite popular with the younger local Mexican crowd.

Situated on the second floor, this busy nightclub has a beautiful open-air concept surrounded by tropical plants and stylish decor.

You’ll find mostly Reggaeton, Latino music, and top 40 hits here. The cover is only 100 pesos, a beer costs 80 pesos and a cocktail ranges from 150-200.

One of the best electronic venues with possibly the best sound system in Mexico City. This club is below ground and features world-class DJ’s and an amazing laser light show. The cover is typically 400 pesos and up.

If you’re looking for more of a pop or reggaeton vibe then head here for your evening out. Although I’m not a fan of the music and ADDJ who changes the songs every 30 seconds, it’s one of the most popular clubs in the city and is typically packed.. The venue’s decor has a very industrial vibe featuring artwork from Banksy.

Located in Cibeles in Roma Norte, this is a hot spot for the youth looking to experience Mexico City nightlife.

A little pricier than other clubs, you can typically buy a bottle with friends for around $100. On Saturdays, the place is open from noon until very late.

Patrick Miller

One of the most notorious and popular clubs to experience Mexico City nightlife, it was closed for two years during the Covid-19 pandemic and has just recently reopened for business.

An eccentric crowd fills this large warehouse during the weekends with a wide range of music from the 80’s all the way up to the present.

Not really an upscale place, beer goes for only $50 pesos, and cocktails are around $100. Throughout the dance floor, you’ll find circles where people can challenge each other to “dance-offs”, think you’re a good dancer? Give it a try!

A new nightclub that just recently opened up in 2022. Located in Roma Norte in Cibeles, this nightclub features an array of DJ’s playing progressive house, techno and even trance.

Entrance is free before 12 am if you’re on the list. The place is a little small, and drinks are pricey but it’s definitely worth it. The music and light show is out of this world and in our opinion one of the best places for Mexico City nightlife.

Cultura Subterranea

A special kind of nightclub that changes locations every weekend. With a very mixed crowd, foreigners and Mexicans alike, the only thing they have in common is the need to party.

One of the hardest clubs to gain entrance to get amongst the Mexico City Nightlife is M.N Roy and this is due to its notoriety and the occasional celebrity cameo, it’s definitely quite different than the other clubs and a lot pricier.

You need to know someone in order to enter or hold a membership to the club. Good luck.

Donceles 88

In the heart of the historic center, you’ll find this gem of a nightclub. Housed in an old historic 3 story house is this venue with excellent electronic music; from house to techno to even progressive trance some nights.

Beware: the building is quite old and it may feel like you’ll fall through the floor at times.

An upper-class club located in the fancy and expensive Polanco district, named after Janis Joplin. You’ll see a lot of young pretty ladies here looking for that special guy or simply experiencing the magical Mexico City nightlife.

The music is typically electronic and also pop some nights, drinks are quite expensive here, which is to be expected in Polanco.

Mexico City Pubcrawl

Is there a Mexico City Pub Crawl still active? Suprisingly there aren’t many pub crawls in the city, maybe this is because Mexico City is massive, and the nightlife is very spread out so organizing a pub crawl would be very tricky. The only one we’re aware of is this CDMX Pub Crawl .

We’ve also seen few pub crawls on Airbnb experiences and Get Your Guide however they are mostly downtown in Centro and don’t seem to be for large groups.

Where To Stay To Get Amongst The Mexico City Nightlife

If you’re looking to mostly party and experience the best Mexico City nightlife then we recommend staying in the Roma or Condesa area.

You’ll find many awesome Airbnbs and Hotels that are within walking distance of all of the best nightlife spots. Here are some that we recommend:

Luxury: Brick Hotel

If you’re looking for luxury and don’t want to break the bank, Brick Hotel in Roma Norte is an ideal spot, around $400 per night but definitely worth it based on the amazing facilities included and the perfect location.

Mid Range: Capital Luxury Apartments & Offices

For around $85 per night, you can get this awesome apartment studio with a kitchen and balcony located right on Medellin street which is situated right between Roma and Condesa, giving you easy walking distance to all the best nightlife spots in Mexico City.

Budget: HoM Monterrey

If you’re traveling on a budget but still want to stay in an awesome area and get the most out of Mexico City nightlife then HoM Monterrey is a great choice.

For only $20 per night, you’ll get a private room in what is basically a hostel with a shared bathroom and kitchen. Located in Roma Norte, we think it’s an excellent deal.

Mexico City may not be your first destination in mind when it comes to solo female travel so let’s kick this guide off by answering the question, “is it even worth it?”

Mexico City offers an engaging blend of diverse cultures, fascinating history, and unique attractions catering to solo travelers.

It’s one of the top places to travel solo in Mexico – especially as it’s home to some of the world’s best museums, such as the Museum of Anthropology and the Frida Kahlo Museum, showcasing a rich cultural and artistic history.

The city’s culinary scene is also world-renowned, from street food to Michelin-starred restaurants.

In 2021, Mexico City became a top spot for digital nomads due to the lower cost of living. From then, the digital nomad community of foreigners kept growing, which may be a reasonable justification for you to visit.

Meaning, you can easily make friends and meet people here as a solo traveler. It’s a melting pot – everyone’s here!

Where Is Mexico City?

Mexico City, the capital of Mexico , is located in the southeastern part of the country. It is situated in the Valley of Mexico, also called the Basin of Mexico, a large valley in the high plateaus in the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters or about 7,350 feet.

The city is surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, creating a uniquely beautiful landscape. Geographically, it’s roughly in the middle of the country, making it a significant hub for transportation and travel in Mexico.

Best Time To Visit Mexico City

The best time to visit Mexico City for good weather is during the dry season, which runs from late November to April .

During these months, the city experiences less rainfall and has an average temperature of around 20-24°C (68-75°F), providing a pleasant climate for exploring the city’s outdoor attractions.

Remember that Mexico City is at a high altitude, so the city can have warm days but cooler nights. Packing a jacket or sweater is advised even during these months.

Actually, make sure to always pack a jacket because the weather in Mexico City can be really unpredictable. It also can have occasional rain showers even in the dry season so expect different layers of weather when you visit.

I personally think that Mexico City is an all-year-round destination, but I love rain so it might be different for you. I also live in Cabo where we don’t experience rain at all, so visiting Mexico City with a different climate is always a joy for me.

The rainy season in Mexico City typically begins in May and ends in October, with the heaviest rainfall usually occurring from June to August. Keep this in mind if you want to avoid a wet trip to Mexico City.

Getting To Mexico City

Mexico City, being the capital, has all the transportation types that make travel from here to other parts of the country easy. For instance, if you are going to other parts of Mexico, flights will always stop in Mexico City.

Mexico City International Airport is the main flying hub, not just for Mexico but for Latin America. Most flights from the USA, Canada, Europe, and even Japan are direct!

Once you arrive at the airport, it’s relatively easy to get to your hotel; however, remember that Ubers are not allowed to operate in Mexico City or any other airports in Mexico.

You have to pay for a licensed taxi to get to your hotel, which can be double the price of an Uber. There is no airport train, unfortunately, and if you want to take the bus, you have to walk out of the airport (which is quite a walk).

The good news is you can take Uber to the airport to save on costs. They are allowed to drop off passengers but not pick them up.

Getting Around Mexico City As A Solo Traveler

Mexico City is a big city and as a tourist, you will most probably focus on the trendy neighborhoods of Condesa , Roma , and Polanco . These are the top three areas for tourists and are labeled as the safest areas.

Within these neighborhoods, you don’t need public transportation. You can even walk from one neighborhood to another. The bulk of your things to do in Mexico City are here, so get ready to do a lot of walking!

If you need to go to another tourist attraction outside these areas – like the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan – Uber is cheap and easy to hail.

As unpredictable as the weather is, heavy traffic in Mexico City is also inevitable. Personally, when taking Uber, I always expect traffic jams no matter what time of the day.

Mexico City has a train but I don’t take it because Uber is cheap and more convenient. The city’s train is not well-maintained and in the last few years there have been many incidents of collisions and accidents.

Buses are also common and can be found everywhere, but you need to speak very good Spanish to be able to navigate or ask around if you are on the right bus.

I would only recommend buses if you are going to nearby cities like Queretaro or San Miguel de Allende. These are first-class buses and are really easy to hop into. Within the city, just take an Uber.

Is Mexico City Safe For Solo Female Travelers?

According to Travel Safe-Abroad , while Mexico City does experience crime, travelers who stay aware of their surroundings and practice common sense should be fine – especially as tourists are rarely targeted. That being said, pickpocketing is common, so make sure you know how to avoid pickpockets .

In my opinion, solo female travel safety is objective and personal. I do feel safe in Mexico City because first, I have been living in Mexico for the last five years; I know how to behave and move here like I am a Mexican.

Additionally, I also speak Spanish which makes locals not mistake me as a foreigner. Sure, they know I am a foreigner by looking at me but when I start speaking to them in their language, they treat me as a local.

As in many other destinations, solo female travel is often daunting if it’s your first time, especially in a city with a bad press when it comes to safety.

I also believe that safety is not dependent on the places we travel to but on our behavior when we are traveling. In Mexico, I learned that the more you lay low and don’t draw too much attention to yourself, the more that travel becomes safe.

What do I mean by “drawing attention?”

For many of our North American neighbors, Mexico is a place to party, and partying often means drugs. I always tell my friends that buying drugs is the only reason why you will get into trouble anywhere in Mexico (or in the world).

When it comes to how to stay safe in Mexico City, know this: you can enjoy the city without drugs. Do not get too drunk and do not walk alone after 10pm. Sure, you can drink and have fun as this is also a party city; but, make sure you can handle yourself and bring yourself home safely.

Where To Stay On A Solo Trip To Mexico City

Mexico City is a big city, so the best areas to stay in are within the areas where tourists frequent.

Known for its artistic and bohemian vibe, Roma is home to indie boutiques, art galleries, and a thriving culinary scene. Here, you can wander down tree-lined streets, explore vintage markets, or dine in trendy eateries.

Roma is walkable and has good public transportation options, including the metro and buses.

Known as Mexico City’s most upscale neighborhood, I recommend staying in Polanco if you’re looking for high-end shopping, luxury hotels, and top-tier restaurants.

It’s one of the city’s safest neighborhoods. Public transit is readily available, though the area is also walkable.

Popular among young professionals, Condesa offers a mix of vibrant nightlife, lush parks, and Art Deco architecture. Enjoy the cafe culture, stroll in Parque Mexico, or get into its vibrant nightlife.

Mexico City is one of Latin America’s 10 most visited cities by the LGBT community, and it’s easy to see why

According to data from the Secretary of Tourism, Mexico receives about 3.5 million visitors per year who are part of the LGBT community, many of whom make a beeline for Mexico City. It’s not difficult to see why.

The city has witnessed the growth of gay nightlife, from legendary bars such as El Nueve in the 70s to places such as La Purísima and the Marra which now rule the parties. The Zona Rosa, which emerged during the 50s, and the República de Cuba road in the centre of town are both landmarks in the city when it comes to going out.

All of this, in addition the 40 years of LGBTTTI Pride March celebration in Mexico City, shows that it’s not a coincidence that this is one of the cities with the biggest cultural and entertainment offering for the LGBT community. 1.  Tom’s Leather Bar

Tom’s has already cemented its classic status and it’s not been easy to replicate it anywhere else; neither it’s vibe or the grabassery that goes on in here. Inside there are intensely high ceilings with gothic-style beams. The decoration is not unlike the set of Gladiator – the Ridley Scott movie – but, with suggestive paintings of men mounted on golden frames. It’s not easy to grab a seat since there are few stools and they’re usually occupied. In case you were wondering, women aren’t allowed in here but, any and all men are received with open arms. 

2.  Marrakech Salón

This spot is different even if just for the location. It’s on one of the less polished streets in downtown Mexico City. However, as night falls, the neons that adorn Marrakech illuminate the surrounding crumbling buildings in a way that’s almost glamorous. There’s no cover, no doorman, no velvet rope. Once inside, the roof is a few feet taller and it will be crowded. If you get here after 10, get ready to have to muscle your way to the bar. 

3.  Baños Finisterre

It’s a classic in the Mexico City gay community. Practically any day of the week there’s something going on, although the days of most affluence and movement (literally) are Saturdays and Sundays at 8 in the morning. Yes, 8 a.m. Finisterre functions as an afterhours bar after the gay clubs close their doors. At Finisterre, you’ll see men of all ages, sizes, complexions and professions. A good portion of them walk around in the buff. 

4.  La Perla

A cabaret hotspot with a devil stamped on the men’s room door, two Mister Clean posters, a giant oyster hanging in the DJ booth, and a Pérez Prado poster guarded by “sharks.” But, the most magical piece is the image of Marilyn Monroe facing off with Jesus Christ that’s hanging at the bar. This is La Perla, a cabaret that goes back to 1946, but had its moment in the 90s, when groups like La Lupita recorded their videos here. Since then only the prices have changed, but not the limited capacity, so try to get here before 10 to grab a good table. 

5.  El baile de los 41

Here is where it all began. At one side of the Centro Cultural José Martí, you’ll find a plaque that features a relief of Reynaldo Velázquez, which commemorates the most famous story in Mexico’s history of homosexual discrimination. What we are certain of is that on Sunday morning, on the November 18, 1901, there was a political raid in La Paz street (currently known as Ezequiel Montes), in the Tabacalera neighborhood, when a woman complained about the noise that her neighbors were making. 6.  Sodome

Sodome has evolved into a great option for a night out. With DJ boiler room sessions in the lobby and monthly themed parties on the final Friday of each month. You can meet guys at the bar, sweat out your troubles in the steam rooms or Turkish baths, or head upstairs to the dark labyrinth or foam room where the phrase “I dropped the soap” is no joke. It’ll run you around 200-250 MXN to get in depending on the day of the week and drinks start at 40 MXN for beers and 80 MXN for mixed drinks. 

7.  Museo Universitario del Chopo

• Santa María la Ribera

What started out as a pavilion at a German industrial fair at the turn of the 20th century is now El Chopo. Brought over from Germany and assembled in Mexico City in the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood. Exhibitions of contemporary art, design, performing arts, literature symposiums, lectures with thinkers and contemporary musicians are held. In addition to serving the university community and addressing issues related to youth, identity and urbanity, the focus here is also on gender issues. 

8.  La Purísima

Before entering, a spectacular phrase framed in lights welcomes you with the only entry requirement: "Pare de Sufrir!!" (Stop suffering). There is one tiny gripe: even this spot couldn’t make the miracle of gays listening to actually good music happen. There comes a time every night where the most stereotypical pop in all of Mexican LGBT, Gloria Trevi, starts blaring. It’s a bummer because most of the night there is good house and pop music playing. Either way, we’ll put up with the occasional Gloria Trevi for the size of this dance floor alone.

9.  Club Roshell

This place is all about drag. The staff here is super friendly and approachable. They’re even trained to help you with your makeup in case you’re not really sure how to use the eyeliner pencil just yet. They also host comedy night in the main hall, which is slightly reminiscent of a David Lynch movie only also very Mexican cabaret at the same time. It might go without saying but… everyone is welcome here. Even, straight people.

10.  Museo de la Mujer

It’s the headquarters of the Mexican Seminario Histórico LGBTTTI and involves the diversity applauded by the gay community, as well as workshops, conferences and film showings directed at the LGBT public as their daily bread. There’s a permanent exhibition with themes on equality, universal harmony, the dual cosmovision of ancient Mexico, as well as liberty and education.

The untamed nightlife of CDMX is legendary and it extends (of course) to the best gay bars in Mexico City. As the pulsing epicenter of the country, Mexico City is where you can catch a drag show, hit up a lesbian bar or dance the night away to a mix of reggaeton, banda, cumbia and more (there's a dance floor for every type of queer). 

In this list of unmissable gay clubs, you'll find everything from the classic Tom’s Leather Bar – a daring and exhibitionist option since the 1990s – and Zona Rosa’s preppy club, Kinky, complete with gogos and strippers to the classic La Purísima, named on multiple occasions as one of the local LGBTQ community’s favourite hangouts and even a couple spots where straight folks are welcome too.

1.  Baby

The policy here is keep it simple. A lax door policy and a noble cover of 50 MXN grants you access to the ultra-wide dance club decorated with pink neons and hardwood floors. They play top 40 music videos, have unicorns on the walls, and play reggeaton with pop hits mixed in—hip-shaking encouraged. Although, from time to time they’ll play more obscure hits much to the chagrin of the millennial crowd. Baby  can be summed up easily, cheap and refreshing. The staff is friendly, and the spot isn’t ostentatious.

2.  Tom’s Leather Bar

Tom's is located through a non-assuming door on Insurgentes Avenue, just before Michoacán street. For many, this spot is well-known but, for the younger crowd (24 and under), it might look like a northern Mexican cantina because of the double doors at the entrance. Everything is fair game here: drinks, fun, hookups, porn, and even sex. How, you say? Because you absolutely must traverse their famous 'dark room' to get to the bathroom. There’s no other way. So, let that serve as a warning (or an incentive) that you will end up in the dark at some point or another during your time here.

3.  El Pecado

The old El Otro Río Bar has been renovated and renamed, El Pecado . You'll be greeted by drag queens and dancing at the bar to the left, but there is anothe bar and high-tops in the back if you want to rest and grab a drink. There's a small stage where drag queens invite patrons up to dance to hits like Katy Perry’s 'Hot and Cold' but expect the stage to get more and more muscular as the night goes on. 

4.  La Purísima

La Purísima could be the disco version of Marrakech Salón  – just much wider, darker, and designed especially for dancing and making out under strobe lights. Before entering, a spectacular phrase framed in lights welcomes you with the only entry requirement: 'Pare de Sufrir!!' (Stop suffering). The walls are black with crimson highlights and pictures that are far more pornographic than pure. There are also tables and armchairs along with a stage for the muscle-bound strippers to grind on. 

5.  Marrakech Salón

This kitsch-retro cabaret/gallery is responsible for turning the República de Cuba street in the Historic City Center into an alternative to the usually poppin’ Zona Rosa LGBT neighborhood. And this alternative is legit. Even though you’ll still catch them playing Katy Perry and the pink overload is in full effect, you’ll also hear them blasting Radiohead and The Pixies throughout the night. Unlike many gay clubs in Mexico City, Marrakech Salón doesn’t play into the typical gay stereotypes that have plagued Mexico for so long. Here, the idea is to have fun and be able to laugh at oneself – something that’s not all the common in the LGBT community. 

6.  Divina

When the PERRA bar closed at the end of 2016, it temporarily moved to a room in the Teatro Garibaldi. After a few events, problems arose with the organizers and they decided to part ways. This is how Divina was born. They share an entrance with Teatro Garibaldi, although Divina has a much larger space with two stages for dancers or brave souls who wish to moonlight as such. In the main bar downstairs, they keep it simple: vodka, brandy and beer. The music ranges from electropop to the most intense reggeaton and the versatility is what makes it fun. 

7.  Kinky Bar

This spot is located in the former home of a Zona Rosa icon, Lipstick, but that's where the similarities betwen the two spots end. Kinky Bar is divided into two areas: One area is set with stages and tables and it’s decorated with tongue-in-cheek versions of the classic Mexican game, Lotería. The other half of the room is surrounded by glass walls and has a small, cute karaoke setup reminiscent of a cabaret. The music is predictable but, good, with dance hits in English and Spanish mixed in with indispensable classics. 

8.  Nicho Bears & Bar

Whether you’re a bear or a bear-lover, this Londres Street spot in the Zona Rosa is for you. It’s essentially a cave-like long corridor adorned with pictures of beefy men that get progressively deeper and deeper, although not necessarily more sultry. The music of choice is Spanish and English pop hits and beers run around 30 MXN. This place is famous for its karaoke nights on Fridays: Expect big burly man singing Paquita la del Barrio hits. 

9.  Club Roshell

Formerly known as Roshell's Place, this club offers lockers and dressing rooms, so you can put away your usual grey business suit and walk around in that irresistible dress rocking those high heels. The staff here is super friendly and approachable. They’re even trained to help you with your makeup in case you’re not really sure how to apply that eyeliner pencil just yet. Be aware that not everything can be controlled when dozens of naked gay men are walking from the steam room to the dark labyrinth upstairs. However, the vibe here is very chill, almost hippie. Sodome  is always a great option for a night out: With DJ boiler room sessions in the lobby and monthly themed parties on the final Friday of each month.

Charli XCX Plots 2024 International ‘BRAT' Tour Dates

Charli XCX announced the international dates for her 2024 Brat tour on Monday (March 25), which will be a mix of live concerts and what she's dubbed "partygirl" events. The run will kick off with a set at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 1, followed by shows in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Mexico City before winding down on June 22 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Just hours after announcing the dates, the singer noted on Instagram that all the shows were already sold out .

At press time Charli had not yet announced the release date for BRAT , her sixth full-length album, though she did recently reveal that it is out this summer, contains 15 songs and is 41:23 long. The follow-up to her 2022 album Crash has been advanced by the uptempo first single, "Von Dutch."

Speaking to Billboard at this year's 2024 Women in Music event, Charli said that BRAT is a club record meant to evoke the illegal London rave scene of the early 2000s where she started performing as a 14 and 15-year-old, produced from a tight collection of sounds to create "this unique minimalism that is very loud and bold."

She also said that the album is "very direct" eschewing "metaphor and flowery lyricism" for language that is closer to the way she talks to her friends in text messages. "This record is all the things I would talk about with my friends, said exactly how I would say them. It's in ways very aggressive and confrontational, but also very conversational and personal," she said. "And not in that boring way where artists are like, ‘This is my most personal record.' To me, it feels like listening to a conversation with a friend.

Madonna performed her penultimate concert on her massive Celebration Tour in Mexico City on Friday night, and to mark the occasion she invited surprise guest Salma Hayek . The actress served as a judge during the “Vogue” ballroom competition at Madonna’s concert at the Palacio de Los Deportes.

Hayek shared videos and photos from the moment via Instagram on Saturday. Channeling Frida Kahlo — the legendary painter whom the actress portrayed in the 2002 film — with her vibrant ensemble, she is seen in a Vogue pose and on stage beside Madonna ready to share score cards as a ballroom judge of the dancers’ performances during “Vogue.”

“Thank you so much @madonna for letting me be a part of your iconic celebration tour,” Hayek captioned the post. “This unforgettable night goes in my bag of precious treasures. #VIVAMEXICO #VIVAMADONNA .”

Madonna has just one show left on her current itinerary, a free concert on May 4 at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that Visit Rio officials said is forecast to bring in two million fans. Entrance to the show, sponsored by Itaú Bank, is on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event. Fans who can’t attend will be able to watch the show broadcast live on TV Globo.

Mexico City hosted Madonna for a series of five concerts at the Palacio De Los Deportes. Last weekend, on Saturday, April 20, the singer spoke of her love of Mexican culture and Kahlo, telling the audience how she discovered the painter’s art as a young girl.

“As you know, I have a great history, a long history with Mexico,” said Madonna, who reportedly met with the Kahlo family at their home in the city neighborhood of El Pedregal.

“When I was a girl,” she said, “I discovered Frida Kahlo. I went to the only museum that existed in Detroit, and there were Diego Rivera murals everywhere, but to be honest, I was more interested in a small picture in a corner, of a beautiful woman with her hair gathered in braids and intense eyes.”

The Celebration Tour kicked off in the fall, after a delayed start due to Madonna’s hospitalization for a serious bacterial infection over the summer.

Major League Baseball's 2024 Mexico City Series goes down this weekend and features a pair of games between the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies . Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú, in Mexico's capital and largest city, will be the host venue. 

Saturday's game will be broadcast on MLB Network, Rockies.TV, and the Space City Home Network, and Sunday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and, once again, for in-market fans it'll be Rockies.TV and Space City Home Network. 

Saturday's game

The Rockies will be the home team for the series opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET. The Astros will start right-hander Ronel Blanco . This season, he's got a sparkling ERA of 1.33 through four starts and 27 innings, plus a shiny no-hitter , with a much more ordinary K/BB ratio of 1.83. The Rockies will counter with righty Cal Quantrill . Quantrill in 2024 has pitched to a 4.33 ERA over five starts with a 1.25 K/BB ratio.

Sunday's game 

The second game of the series marks Houston's turn to be the home team. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET. The Astros trot out ace Framber Valdez (yes, he's the Astros ace even with Justin Verlander now on the active roster). This season, Valdez owns an ERA of 2.19 in a pair of starts. He's finished in the top 10 of the American League Cy Young balloting in each of the last two seasons. Colorado goes with lefty Austin Gomber . Gomber on the young season has an ERA of 4.32 in five starts. 

Now here are some more things to know about this series.

1. The Astros need to get something going 

This year's Mexico City Series features what have thus far been two of MLB's worst teams in 2024. In the case of the Rockies, that's not all that surprising. With Houston, though, the early struggles are a sharp departure from recent history. The Astros are every bit a modern dynasty in MLB, as they've won a pair of World Series titles during their current run (2017 and 2022) and have made it at least to the American League Championship Series in each of the last seven postseasons. That makes their current straits all the more jarring. 

Speaking of which, the Astros are right now in last place in the AL West – yes, behind even the A's – and their current record stands at 7-19 under first-year manager Joe Espada. That dismal record is backed up by a similarly dismal run differential of minus-36. They come into the Mexico Series having lost five in a row, including a sweep at the hands of the Cubs . The good news for the Astros is that the Rockies are arguably even worse, so therein lies an opportunity for Houston to get a touch of positive momentum going. That's something they badly need, to say the least.

2. Runs might be easy to come by

Thanks in large measure to the elevation – Mexico City is 7,349 feet above sea level, or more than 2,000 feet higher than Denver – the ball figures to fly out of Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú this weekend. Given that the Rockies will be in town, the comparisons to Coors Field will be frequent. Harp Helú, however, is really on a different level. The difference in altitude was just noted, and the dimensions of the two fields are also notable. Coors Field is 347 feet down the left-field line, 390 in the left-field power alley, 415 to center, 375 to the right-field power alley and 350 down the right-field line. In the meantime, Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú is 325 down both lines and 400 to center.

Or, as Ben Lindbergh of the Ringer wrote in 2017 : 

"Physics of baseball expert Alan Nathan estimates via email that the air density in Mexico City is only 76 percent relative to sea level, compared with 82 percent at Coors. According to Nathan's calculations — holding all else equal except altitude — a "standard long fly ball" with a 103 mph exit speed and a 27.5 degree launch angle would travel 398 feet at sea level. At Coors, it would fly 427 feet. And in Mexico City, it would cover 438 feet."

Indeed, in the inaugural Mexico City Series held last year, the Padres and Giants teamed up for a total of 37 runs and 14 home runs (!) over their two contests at Harp Helú. 

3. This is the seventh regular-season MLB series in Mexico

MLB under commissioner Rob Manfred has emphasized growing the sport internationally, and that's led to an uptick in the number of games played abroad. Speaking of which, this is the seventh time that MLB will hold a regular-season series in Mexico. Last year's edition was in Mexico City, and the previous Mexico Series was in Monterrey. Here's a look back: 

• 1996 Mexico Series: Mets vs. Padres
• 1999 Mexico Series: Rockies vs. Padres
• 2018 Mexico Series: Padres vs. Dodgers
• 2019 Mexico Series: Reds vs. Cardinals , Astros vs. Angels
• 2023 Mexico Series: Padres vs. Giants

As you can see, this year's combatants, the Rockies and Astros, have participated in the series before. The Padres, likely because of San Diego's close proximity to Mexico, lead all comers with four Mexico Series appearances.
