Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia: Ultimate Visitor’s Guide

Home » Blog » Europe » Croatia » Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia: Ultimate Visitor’s Guide

Stunning waterfalls, turquoise lakes, and panoramic vistas make up Plitvice Lakes National Park, one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Croatia. In this guide, we provide all the information and insider tips for planning a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Quick Note: As of January 1, 2023, Croatia joined the Eurozone and adopted the Euro as their currency. Kuna (kn or HRK), the former currency of Croatia, will no longer be accepted as a form of payment. However, Kuna banknotes and coins can be exchanged until December 31, 2023. This also means Croatia is now part of the Schengen Area and adheres to those laws and visa requirements .

Situated in the heart of the mountainous Lika region is a fairytale paradise unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most visited sights in Croatia just after Dubrovnik.

Wooden boardwalks snake through turquoise lakes while waterfalls pour over the surrounding limestone cliff sides. It’s no wonder that this location has become so renowned and sought-after.

Divided into two main sections with separate entrances, Plitvice Lakes has seven sightseeing routes including four different hiking trails. Planning a trip here can be overwhelming without all the know-how.

In this guide, we breakdown everything you need to know about visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park. This article includes the best routes through the park, what to pack, tips for avoiding crowds, and everything else you should know to make the most out of your visit.

Plitvice Lakes National Park overview

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Comprised of 16 interconnected lakes with colors ranging from deep cerulean to turquoise, all pooled beneath more than 90 cascading waterfalls, Plitvice Lakes is easily considered one of the crown jewels of Croatia.

Spanning an impressive 73,000 acres, the park is divided into two main sections: Lower Lakes and Upper Lakes.

These two sections have been organized into 4 different hiking trails that can be explored using 7 different routes (known as programs).

Hiking is the main way to get around in Plitvice Lakes National Park. However,  there are also boats and shuttles (called panoramic trains) that are situated across the park as additional transportation options.

Each program takes you on a colorful journey through this UNESCO-awarded park filled with jaw-dropping waterfalls, lush forests, and glittering blue-green lakes.

The other-worldly beauty of this park is something that you cannot miss while traveling around Croatia. Despite the millions of visitor’s it attracts each year, it should definitely be on your itinerary.

Psst! If you have time to discover more of the country, don’t miss these other epic places to visit in Croatia .

Plitvice Lakes National Park hours and fees

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Plitvice Lakes is open every day, year round, however the opening hours, fees, and facilities vary depending on each season.

Opening hours*

  • Summer: 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Fall: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Winter: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Spring: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

*Note these hours may vary seasonally so it’s a good idea to check the official website before you plan your visit.

Unsure which season is best for your trip? We break it all down in our guide to the best time to visit Croatia.

Entrance fees

The cost to get into Plitvice Lakes varies season to season and you can purchase tickets one of two ways: in-person at the ticketing booth or online .

We recommend purchasing your tickets online, in-advance. There are limited tickets each day and you could end up wasting a lot of time waiting in line for a ticket. OR the worst case scenario, they’re sold out, which is nearly guaranteed in high season.

You can purchase 1- or 2-day tickets for adults, children and students. Below we’ve listed the cost for a single day adult ticket. View prices online

  • Summer : 39.80 € (~$42 USD)
  • Fall : 23.50 € (~$25 USD)
  • Winter : 10 € (~$10 USD)
  • Spring : 23.50 € (~$25 USD)

The cost for children (7-18) and students is typically half or less than half of the regular adult cost. If you have children under 6, they get in free.

Good to know : When you purchase a ticket you must choose a time slot. You will be able to enter the park up to 30-minutes before and 1 hour after your specified ticket time and they are very strict about this rule.

If you waited to purchase tickets and it says they’re sold out online, you can view the current number of available tickets at both entrances at this link .

They’re only available to buy in-person at the official ticket booths and will change availability as sold and depending on people waiting in line.

If you have your own car, parking will cost an additional fee. You’ll pay when you exit the park at one of the payment stalls.

Prices listed are for the main tourism season (June 1 – September 30). View list of parking costs .

  • Standard vehicles : 1.32 € (~$1.40 USD) / per hour
  • Larger vehicles (camper, bus, etc.): 13 € (~$14 USD) / per day
  • Bikes and motorcycles : Free

In the winter (November 1 to January 3), parking is free.

Plitvice Lakes National Park entrances

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

The park can be accessed using three entrances : Entrance 1, Entrance 2, and an auxiliary entrance called ‘Flora’. The third isn’t used as frequently since you cannot purchase tickets here and all tickets start at the other two entry points.

You must enter and leave from the same entrance. Whichever one will depend on what program you choose (more on that below).

Each entrance highlights one of two areas: Upper Lakes or Lower Lakes. Neither is a bad choice, especially if your program covers both areas.

This entrance is next to the Lower Lakes area of Plitvice Lakes and is open year round.

The best views (arguably) are from this entrance and some people prefer it since the route is uphill in the morning and downhill near the end of your day traveling back to the entrance.

This entrance is next to the Upper Lakes area of the park.

All the buses coming from major cities drop riders off at this entrance. Also, the hotels that are actually inside the park are located next to Entrance 2.

Good to know : This entrance is closed in the winter.

How to get to Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Compared to all the main cities and attractions in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes is kind of in the middle of nowhere .

Situated far inland from the Adriatic Coast, close to the country’s border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, it’s a bit of a journey to get here from most major cities and hubs (we’re talking a few hours minimum coming from any direction).

Luckily, there are plenty of different transportation options to get to the park whether you’re on a jam-packed day trip or staying overnight near the park.

If you want to maximize your experience at Plitvice Lakes National Park, having your own rental car will allow you to travel freely on your own schedule.

Here are the driving distances from the most popular cities:

  • From Zagreb : 130 km (80 miles); 2 hours, 15 minutes
  • From Zadar : 130 km (80 miles); 2 hours
  • From Split : 241 km (150 miles); 2 hours, 25 minutes
  • From Dubrovnik : 411 km (255 miles); 5 hours, 26 minutes
  • From Pula : 257 km (160 miles); 3 hours, 11 minutes

Discover Cars is our go-to site for finding affordable rental cars worldwide. You can compare rates across rental agencies from top companies and we’ve found it to save us money in the long run.

Public transportation

The best way to get to the park using public transportation is by bus.

Zagreb and Zadar are the two closest cities to Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Both cities are equal distance from the park, but if you can, we recommend coming from Zagreb. It offers a better variety of ticket times for a cheaper price, and is ideal if you want to arrive at the park closer to the opening hour.

The journey takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes from the Zagreb bus station to the Plitvička Jezera bus stop near Entrance 2.

You can purchase your bus tickets online ahead of time.

Guided tour

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Guided tours are a great outlet for a fulfilling day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park. You can book tours from a variety of different major cities in Croatia.

  • Rastoke & Plitvice Lakes National Park Tour from Zagreb : Skip the lines on this small, intimate tour of the park. On the way, you’ll stop in Rastoke to visit a small windmill village before spending the day exploring the turquoise lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice.
  • From Split: Plitvice Lakes Fully-Guided Day Tour : Explore the highlights of the Upper and Lower Lake sections of the park. With a local guide, you’ll admire beautiful lakes, canyons, waterfalls, and fairytale walking paths. On your way back to Split, enjoy a traditional Croatian meal.
  • From Zadar: Plitvice National Park Full-Day Tour : Visit the Upper and Lower Lakes of Plitvice on this in-depth tour. A local guide will take you around the park on the best routes and offer insightful facts and knowledge.

If you’re traveling to Plitvice Lakes as a day trip, read this first!

We departed from Split and were going to Zagreb that night, so we had all our stuff. There is free luggage storage at Plitvice Lakes where you can leave your belongings at both entrances. Do know that the storage room is locked, but it’s not secure.

People will be going in all day long to drop off and pick up their belongings, so lock up your valuables. A trick we often use is locking our bags together with these wire locks . Nobody will steal your bag when it’s locked to another bag. It’s just too awkward!

How much time do you need in Plitvice Lakes?

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Half a day minimum is ideal to explore the park, however more time is always better.

With half a day to work with you can explore all the main highlights and feel satisfied with your visit. Maximize your time by arriving early to beat lines and traffic getting into the park.

With more time, you can get off the beaten path and explore lesser-known gems of the park for a well-rounded visit.

Insider tip: Stay in a hotel near Plitvice Lakes instead of doing a day trip from Split or Zadar (if your timing allows!). You’ll get there bright and early and will be able to stay after the last buses leave. This is how we would do it next time. (Find some recommended hotel options in the where to stay section below!)

Plitvice Lower Lakes

Veliki Slap Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

This section contains four large lakes: Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod. The lakes cut deep into limestone canyons, creating steep cliff sides and dramatic views.

All of the Lower Lakes are connected via a series of boardwalks with steep climbs and steps throughout creating the effect of a dreamy fantasy world.

The main highlight of the Lower Lakes is Veliki Slap, also known as the Great Waterfall, which is the largest lake in both the national park and all of Croatia. This is also the most popular part of Plitvice Lakes National Park, so it’s best explored early in the morning before all the crowds.

Plitvice Upper Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

The remaining 12 lakes make up the Upper Lakes Section: Prošćansko Jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Jezero, Malo Jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino Jezero, Gradinsko Jezero, Burgeti, and Kozjak.

These lakes are nestled in dolomite rock and all connected by natural travertine barriers. The barriers form a massive staircase-like structure where the highest lake (Prošćansko) flows down and eventually feeds into the lowest lake (Kozjak). This then feeds into the Lower Lakes section of the park.

More wooden boardwalks criss-cross traversing the lakes, showcasing waterfalls and stunning vistas at viewpoints along the way.

This section has less people , albeit still crowded, and has some of the most stunning natural beauty we’ve ever seen.

Plitvice Lakes viewpoints

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

There are a variety of viewpoints to stop at around the park that offer high vantage points with jaw-dropping panoramic vistas.

These are some of the most beautiful (and popular) viewpoints around Plitvice Lakes National Park. You’ll encounter them along the main programs.

  • Lower Lakes Viewpoint : Gaze at boardwalks snaking through turquoise lakes below.
  • Vidikovac 5 : View dramatic cliff sides jutting out of a stunning lake.
  • Mali prštavac : Up close views of a stunning cascading waterfall.

Upper Viewpoints

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Alternatively, there is a lesser-known route on the western edge of the park where you’ll hike hitting various viewpoints along a cliff side.

In Lower Lakes, once near the boat dock (P3 on the map), you’ll spot a road that branches off the main trail on the right side ( location ).

You’ll follow the trail north, taking in the various viewpoints until you arrive at Veliki Slap.

The end of this trail is where the Plitvicke Jazera Waterfall Viewpoint trailhead begins. You’ll spot it on the right.

You can hike to the famous postcard viewpoint, then follow the stairs back to the Lower Lakes section.

Get walking directions

Important note : As of the time of publication, the staircase connecting the upper viewpoints to Entrance 1 is closed, so once you’re finished along the trail you’ll need to hike back to the boat dock (P3), then back to Entrance 1.

Plitvicke Jazera Waterfall Viewpoint

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

This is the most postcard worthy view in the entire park where you can see Veliki Slap pouring into the Lower Lakes section.

You can drive or hike from Entrance 1 to this viewpoint.

From Entrance 1, you’ll come across a staircase on the right that leads to the viewpoint ( location ). You’ll follow the staircase up to the viewpoint, then hike back down the way you came.

Good to know : This staircase is currently closed, but you can still access the viewpoint by driving or following the route to the Upper Viewpoints we talked about above.

Driving is the most convenient option as it’s located on the western side of the park within Plitvica Selo. There is a small parking area at the trailhead , then it’s only a few-minutes walk to the viewpoint.

Routes for exploring Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

There are seven different routes (called programs) you can take to explore the park.

Each one ranges in length and difficulty, and depends on a few different factors: how much time you have, your starting point, and how much energy you have.

With so many options, it can be overwhelming to try and choose, so we’ve broken them all down below to make finding the right one for you more seamless.

Depending on the program, it starts at one of two entrances:

  • Entrance 1 routes : A, B, C, and K (option 1)
  • Entrance 2 routes : E, F, H, and K (option 2)

Note that routes E-F are the same as A-C, except they travel in the opposite direction from a different entrance. Route K is a long day hike through the entire park so it’s offered from both entrances.

  • Distance: 3.5 km / 2.2 miles
  • Estimated Duration: 2-3 hours

This trail highlights the Lower Lakes section, taking you upstream along boardwalk trails to admire Veliki Slap (“Great Waterfall”) and postcard-worthy lakes.

Once you get to Kozjak Bridge, you’ll turn around and walk back to Entrance 1 or opt for the shuttle.

  • Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
  • Estimated Duration: 3-4 hours

This route takes you through the limestone canyon of the Lower Lakes section and along the east rim of the park.

It’s a continuation of Program A, except you’ll cross the Kozjak Bridge, boat to the other side of Kozjak Lake, then hike or shuttle back to Entrance 1.

Admire Veliki Slap (the “Great Waterfall”), other waterfalls and scenic lakes along this straightforward route.

  • Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
  • Estimated Duration: 4-5 hours

Explore both the Upper and Lower Lakes section of Plitvice on this circular route.

This route is a continuation of Program B. After boating to the far side of Kozjak Lake, you’ll walk along the boardwalk trails through the Upper Lakes area, then hike or shuttle back to Entrance 1.

You’ll see the most spectacular waterfalls in the park; “Great Waterfall”, Veliki Prštavac, and Mali Prštavac, as well as countless other falls and pretty lakes.

  • Distance: 5.1 km / 3.16 miles

This program highlights the Upper Lakes section of Plitvice Lakes.

Starting from Entrance 2, you’ll take a boat ride across Lake Kozjak, then follow the trail upstream to Lake Prošćansko.

Along the route, admire the Great Waterfall, many smaller falls, and lakes before taking a panoramic train ride back to Entrance 2.

  • Distance: 4.6 km / 2.8 miles

Follow this program to explore the Lower Lakes section of Plitvice Lakes.

From Entrance 2, you’ll walk a short way to the boat dock, then take a boat shuttle across Kozjak Lake.

Once on the other side, walk through the limestone canyon, admire the Great Waterfall, high cliff sides, and various viewpoints highlighting the park before hiking or taking a train ride back to Entrance 2.

  • Distance: 8.9 km / 5.5 miles
  • Estimated Duration: 4-6 hours

Starting at Entrance 2, this route travels through both the Lower and Upper Lakes sections.

You’ll begin taking a shuttle from the entry point to the top of the Upper Lakes (St3). From there you’ll follow the trails and boardwalks through this section before taking a boat shuttle across Kozjak Lake to Lower Lakes.

Explore around Lower Lakes, passing the Great Waterfall, viewpoints, and lakes, then you’ll take the shuttle from Entrance 1 back to Entrance 2.

Program K – Entrance 1 or 2

  • Distance: 18.3 km / 11.4 miles
  • Estimated Duration: 6-8 hours

This is the longest program available through Plitvice Lakes that goes through both Lower and Upper Lakes as a full walking tour rather than using a series of shuttles.

There are two options for Program K, and the only difference is which entrance you want to start at. Each also travels in the same direction, so you’re getting the best views no matter which you choose.

You’ll walk through the Lower Lake boardwalks snaking through the canyon, admire the Great Waterfall, explore Upper Lakes, all while taking in the views and waterfalls along various high vantage points.

At the end of the route, you’ll take a short boat shuttle to get back to the east side of Kozjak Lake, allowing you to arrive back at Entrance 2, or walk back to Entrance 1.

Our recommendation

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

To avoid the crowds in Plitvice and see all the major sights, this is the route that we would recommend: Do the H hiking route in reverse.

Starting at Entrance 1, go down to the Lower Falls, see the Great Waterfall, (which is spectacular) but then follow the reverse of the H hiking route (similar to K route).

This way you won’t feel like cattle moving on walkways with the rest of the crowds. You can either walk around the big lake or take the ferry across.

The Upper Falls were our favorite part, because there were less people and the way the water flows off all the rocks is unlike anything we have ever seen.

Continue to follow the H hiking route in reverse, twisting through the upper falls, until you reach Station 3. Then, take the free shuttle to Station 1 so you don’t have to walk the entire way back.

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

There are three main ways to explore the park: on foot, shuttle buses, and the boat ferries.

Throughout your visit you’ll use a combination of the three to explore the park depending on what program you’re taking. You can expect your day to include mostly walking/hiking along the marked routes.

Good to know : The shuttles and ferries are included in your ticket price.

Best time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Plitvice Lakes is open 365 days a year, but every season has its pros and cons to visiting.

Summer is the busiest and hottest time to visit the park. Daytime temperatures will be sweltering and the waterfalls may not be as powerful since this season is drier than others. Tickets easily sell out daily during peak season and the boardwalks will be packed.

Spring and fall are arguably the best and most beautiful time to visit Plitvice Lakes . The crowds of summer have left and the waterfalls are more powerful from rainfall. Plus, during the fall, golden foliage blankets the park.

You can expect the least amount of crowds at Plitvice Lakes during the winter, and if you’re lucky, a blanket of snow will cover the park. Expect limited facility and accommodation options, as well as trail closures this season.

Where to stay near Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is very popular, so there are plenty of great stays in a convenient location near the park.

House Nina (Booking)

House Nina : Just outside of the park is this budget stay with a social atmosphere. It’s in a quiet neighborhood with a big garden and ensuite rooms. It’s 5-miles away from the bus stop to Plitvice or a short drive to the park with your own car.

B&B Apartments Burić Plitvice Lakes (Booking)

Apartmani Burić : Just a few miles from both entrances, these apartments offer a full-service kitchen, scenic balcony, and onsite restaurant. The host offers taxis to and from Plitvice, otherwise there is a bus stop nearby and the drive is 6-10 minutes by car.

B&B Millenium House (Booking)

Millennium House : Just a 5-minute drive from Entrance 2, this B&B has amazing views, breakfast included, free Wifi, an onsite restaurant, and an outdoor terrace perfect for relaxing. They offer a shuttle to the entrance or you can use their free bike rentals. The bus stop is only a 5-minute walk away where you can shuttle to Entrance 1.

Apartment I&M (Booking)

Apartment I&M : Steps away from Entrance 1, this full-service apartment has 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, shared lounge area with games, free Wifi, free bike rentals, and a scenic terrace. There is an onsite restaurant you can dine at for breakfast and dinner before or after exploring the park for the day.

FAQs about visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

We’ve covered a ton in this guide, but here are more must-knows for your visit to Plitvice Lakes.

Is Plitvice Lakes worth visiting?

Yes! Absolutely. Plitvice Lakes is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia .

Its network of turquoise lakes and waterfalls, all connected with dreamy boardwalks will likely be a highlight of your trip in Croatia.

Why is the water in Plitvice so blue?

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

The blue-green water is spectacular from the synergy of a few different factors: direct sunlight, mineral rich and crystal clear waters and the way they absorb the sunlight, and moss with filtering and color-changing effects.

Can you swim at Plitvice Lakes National Park?

No, it’s strictly prohibited to protect the ecosystems.

Should I start at Plitvice Entrance 1 or 2?

We recommend starting at Entrance 1 . It’s ideal for exploring Lower Lakes first and arriving at the park early in the morning.

You’ll (mostly) beat the late-morning crowds in the area and have the best views along the trail since the waterfalls will be in front of you rather than behind you.

What is the best time of day to visit Plitvice Lakes?

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

The earlier the better (aim to arrive when the park opens), especially if you’re visiting in peak season.

In the early morning, you can stroll the boardwalks with a fraction of the tourists and beat the midday heat. By 10 a.m., the park is very packed.

How to avoid the crowds at Plitvice Lakes?

Getting there early and in the shoulder seasons will help you avoid the crowds. Visit the most popular spots early in the day or in the later afternoon when the lighting is better and the crowds have thinned. In the meantime, venture off the well-trodden path a bit for a better chance of (semi) solitude.

What should I wear to Plitvice?

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

What you’ll wear will depend on the season that you visit, however you’ll want to make sure you wear sturdy, close-toed shoes year round since the trails can be uneven and steep.

No matter the season, it’s important to check the weather before you go so you can dress accordingly .

Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended for summer, plenty of layers are essential in the winter, and rain gear will likely be needed in the shoulder seasons/on rainy days.

Do you need to buy tickets in advance for Plitvice Lakes?

Plitvice Lakes National Park Croatia

Yes, during peak season tickets can sell out well in advance , or there could be a long wait to enter the park.

Ideally, buy your tickets in advance and try to grab the earliest time slot.

Is there food available inside Plitvice Lakes National Park?

There are several restaurants to choose from inside the park with a variety of food options.

Insider tip: Pack a picnic lunch because a) it’s a beautiful spot for picnics, and b) the choices inside the park are limited and expensive.

Can you stay overnight in Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Yes, there are three hotels within the park you can stay at: Hotel Jezero , Hotel Bellevue , and Hotel Plitvice . Note they’re all next to Entrance 2.

That said, they’re the most expensive options and fairly old-fashioned. But staying within the park has its perks.

About Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park consists of 16 crystalline lakes, emerald-blue in color and connected by a series of more than 90 cascades and waterfalls.

The park has been divided into two sections, the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes, based on their geological features. The twelve Upper Lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock. The names of the lakes are Prošćansko Jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Jezero, Malo Jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino Jezero, Gradinsko Jezero, Burgeti, and Kozjak. The four Lower Lakes were formed in permeable limestone and cut deep into a canyon amid dramatic cliffs. They are Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod.

A series of wooden footbridges and pathways snake over the lakes and around their shores providing gentle trails for visitors to wander, explore, and take in the breathtaking views. Portions of the park are also connected by electric boats and a “panoramic train” (this is not actually a train as it does not run on a track – rather, it is a very long bus).

Highlights within the park include Veliki Slap, also known as the Great Waterfall. At 78 m high, it is the tallest waterfall not only the park, but in all of Croatia. From certain viewpoints, the Sastavci waterfalls appear to be an extension of this, creating a dramatic scene from which the Korana River springs up and flows north toward the town of Karlovac. Numerous viewpoints throughout the park provide stunning views. The eastern ridge of the canyon which overlooks the Lower Lakes provides particularly beautiful views which will surely be familiar to those who have seen images of the park in magazines or on postcards.

The History of Plitvice Lakes National Park

In the sixteenth century, the area now known as Plitvice Lakes National Park was home to the Croatian Military Frontier which acted as a borderland of Hapsburg Austria to the Ottoman Empire. Perhaps it was fear of the Turks that inspired some to refer to these lands as “the devil’s gardens,” or perhaps it was simply the deep awe with which people regarded the dense woods surrounding the lakes. Legends were formed about this isolated and unexplored territory, telling stories of fairies, giants and other mystical creatures. Over the next few hundred years, the area saw many changes in rule with even Napoleon briefly presiding over the region. Marked by frequent turmoil, it remained largely unpopulated throughout that time.

The late 1800s marks the beginning of tourism in the region, with hotels erected for visiting Austrian royalty. In fact, some of the hiking trails developed during that time still exist today. Flash forward to 1949, and Plitvice Lakes National Park was officially opened, receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Tourism was booming in the 1980s, and the national park was one of then Yugoslavia’s most popular attractions. However, on Easter Sunday in March 1991, things took a tragic turn when Plitvice Lakes became the site of the first armed confrontation of the Croatian War of Independence. The rising tensions between Serbs and Croats led to shots fired which resulted in two deaths, twenty wounded, and four hundred tourists evacuated. The park was held by Serb rebels and hotels and other facilities used as barracks until August 1995 when the Croatian Army retook the region.

Today, admiring the beauty of the lakes and their glittering falls, it is hard to imagine the blood that once spilled on this soil, or the landmines which littered the forest.

Choosing the Right Trail

Plitvice Lakes National Park provides seven recommended routes exploring both the Upper and Lower Lakes. The park refers to these routes as “programs,” each with its own circuit identified by markers throughout the park. Each program has a corresponding letter and is color coded based on starting point. Visitors entering the park at Entrance 1 can choose between four routes, marked in green. The four routes beginning at Entrance 2 are marked in orange. Info panels at the park’s entrances also display the routes, and maps are available at info points.

The routes vary in distance and therefore in the length of time needed to complete them. The shortest route takes roughly 2 hours and covers many of the park’s highlights. The longest route can take up to 8 hours and tours both the upper and lower lakes. All seven of the park’s programs can be found on their website .

Walking trail options and map at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

For visitors with only one day at Plitvice Lakes National Park, we recommend “Program B” starting at Entrance 1. This route covers the Lower Lakes and provides a great overview of what the park has to offer. It will satisfy travelers who are looking to experience the park’s main attractions, see stunning scenery, take beautiful photos, and connect with nature. Many of Plitvice’s most recognizable vistas will be seen on this route. If staying a second day, we recommend following up with “Program E” to cover the Upper Lakes beginning at Entrance 2. The combination of those two programs will cover the entire lakes area of the park.

Examples of different types of trails in Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

The walking trails in the park are well maintained and safe. The vast majority of the paths are flat, though in some areas you may find stairs or an incline. In general, however, the trails are not challenging and appropriate for a variety of ages and fitness levels. Wooden trails snake over the lakes while dirt paths or stone walkways connect other areas. Be sure to exercise caution when on uneven surfaces. Mist from the waterfalls can also cause some areas to be slippery.

The boat and "panoramic train" (shuttle bus) within Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Some of the programs involve an electric boat or panoramic train ride in addition to the walking trails. These provide a relaxing and scenic way to cover more ground at the park. Your entrance ticket should be kept on you at all times and grants access to both the boat and train. Schedules vary with season, so be sure to check the timetable at one of the info points.

The forest beyond the lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Beyond the Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park encompasses an area of just under 300 square kilometers with the lakes themselves comprising just 1% of this expanse. The remainder of the park is made up of a wooded forest of beech, fir and pine trees which is home to deer, bears, wolves, wildcats and rare bird species – a paradise for nature lovers and curious travelers alike.

In addition to the walking routes which circle the Lower and Upper Lakes, hiking trails provide the opportunity to explore the wooded areas and surrounding mountains. Beyond the park, this region is a wonderful place to enjoy activities such as river kayaking, cycling, horseback riding, ziplining, and more. Our Tasteful Croatian Journeys Concierge, Mirela, is happy to make these arrangements for our travelers. Roughly 30 minutes north of Plitvice Lakes National Park is the small town of Rastoke. Popular among tourists for its cascading waterfalls, this village provides a nice opportunity to stop and stretch one’s legs when making the drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb.

Practical Information

Tickets – Tickets to Plitvice Lakes National Park must be purchased a minimum of 2 days before entering the park. Tickets can be purchased for a single day, or multiple days, and must include an entrance time and gate for your first point of entry. There are two entrances to the park. If you choose to do a multi-day ticket, entrance on your first day must be at the time and entrance specified on the ticket. On all subsequent visits you may enter through any of the park’s entrances. You will be able to enter the park 30 minutes before, or up to 1 hour after the time specified on your ticket. Tickets can be purchased on the Plitvice Lakes National Park website .

Facilities – Info points, trail maps, luggage storage, ATMs, currency exchange, restrooms, souvenir shops, and restaurants can all be found at both Entrance 1 and Entrance 2 of the park. Several government run National Park hotels are also located at Entrance 2 of the park.

Within the park there are several restaurants and cafés serving simple fast food such as grilled meats, sandwiches, or pastries and hot or cold drinks. They are located at the P3 Electric Boat stop and the St1, St2 and St3 panoramic train stops. Restrooms can also be found at those locations. Just outside the park several restaurants with more expansive menus can be found. More on those and the hotels below.

Guides – A guide is not required to tour Plitvice Lakes National Park and the well-marked routes make the park easy to navigate on one’s own. However, for those seeking deeper insight to the park’s ecology and history, we highly recommend a private guided tour. Not only will a local guide share their valuable knowledge about the national park, but also about the region, its culture, and its unique traditions.

What to W ear – When touring the park, it is important to wear the appropriate clothing and footwear. Sneakers, hiking boots, or comfortable walking shoes are recommended with a non-slip sole that is suitable for a variety of surfaces such as wood, stone and dirt. Do not wear flip-flops! Mist from the waterfalls or rain showers can also cause wet conditions for which a waterproof jacket is advisable. In the summer, lightweight clothing as well as a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock are recommended. In cooler temperatures, plan on long pants and heavier clothing. Be sure to bring a bottle of water as it is important to stay hydrated.

The Plitvice Holiday Resort and Fenomen Plitvice Resort, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Where to Stay – There are a number of government run hotels located at Entrance 2 of the park. These include Hotel Jezero , Hotel Plitvice , and Hotel Bellevue . They all provide simple but clean and affordable accommodation with an ideal location exploring the lakes. For something more unique, consider one of the following.

  • Plitvice Holiday Resort – This complex offers a little bit of everything, from bungalows and lake houses to tipi camps and RV parking – but the real gem are the treehouses which house up to 4 people in elevated apartments set among pines just across from a small manmade lake.
  • Fenomen Plitvice Resort – The most luxurious of Plitvice Lakes accommodation, the Fenomen is a 4-star property located within the boundaries of the national park, a short walk from the peak of the highest waterfall. The property is made up of beautifully designed wood cabins which retain the traditional style of the region while offering travelers a comfortable and stylish abode. One-bedroom suites feature fireplaces, with a basket a wood ready for you to create your cozy indoor respite from the wilderness.
  • Hotel Degenija – This 4-star family-run property exudes warmth and hospitality from the moment you enter. Rooms are tasteful, clean and comfortable, but the real draw is the lovely outdoor swimming pool set on a hill with a view of the surrounding mountains. Hotel Degenija also features two restaurants, detailed further below.

Where to Eat – The cuisine of Croatia’s rugged and mountainous interior reflects the rich variety of natural ingredients available to the region. Here you will find a great number of restaurants offering rural, traditional meals, which focus on wild game, freshwater fish, and an array of hearty vegetables. National Restaurant Lička Kuća , located just outside Entrance 1 of Plitvice Lakes National Park, is an homage to the region and its cuisine. The enormous restaurant is decorated in the traditional style with artifacts from the region on display for visitors. In the center of the restaurant, an open hearth displays lamb roasting on a spit and “ peka ” (a hearty meat and vegetable dish) cooking under an iron dome. The restaurant makes use of regional recipes and locally sourced products. Farther afield, Hotel Degenija has two restaurants which have become popular dining spots for both locals and in-the-know travelers alike. The first is the recently renovated Restaurant Degenija which is well known for its quality cuisine, ranging from traditional meat dishes to grilled local trout to freshly made pizzas. The second is Bistro & Caffe Plum , a stylish café which offers international cuisine and impressive cocktails in a modern space with an inviting terrace. Finally, if seeking something a bit upscale, try Restoran Kozjak at the Fenomen Plitvice Resort. The interior resembles a modern hunting lodge with rustic wood ceilings and antlers as décor. The menu features traditional meals with a sophisticated touch, such as smoked trout bruschetta or ravioli stuffed with honey and traditional basa cheese from the Lika region.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia (or in Croatian, Plitvička Jezera) is one of those places that simply defies words.

Made up of 16 interconnected lakes that tumble into each other, one after the other, in a series of stunning waterfalls, the Plitvice Lakes were designated as Croatia’s first national park in 1949, and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

The lakes themselves are absolutely magnificent, filled with crystal-clear water that changes color by the hour, but often appears as a bright turquoise that seems more suitable to a fantasy novel than a place on Earth.

Picturesque wooden boardwalks criss-cross the lakes, creating a fairytale-worthy environment where you can get right up close to the fabulous natural beauty.

Planning a Plitvice Lakes holiday involves making dozens of decisions about how to spend your time in and around the park.

Before we dive into details, let’s cover some quick Plitvice Lakes FAQ.

Should you take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Short answer: you can, but where you leave from matters a lot.

In our opinion, the Plitvice Lakes are a much better experience if you can spend at least one night in the area, as you’ll be able to see the park shortly after opening and before closing (ie, when all of the daytrippers aren’t there!), you’ll have more opportunities to explore in case bad weather ruins some of your plans, and you’ll get to see more of the park.

However, we completely understand that depending on how your Croatia itinerary shakes out, that may not be possible.

If you do want to take a day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park, it’s best to do so from either Zagreb or Zadar. From these locations, you can either drive yourself or book a tour– this tour from Zagreb and this tour from Zadar are well-reviewed, popular, and will help you make the most of your limited time in the park.

In a pinch, you can also take a day trip from Split, but it makes for a very long day, and we feel it’s best accomplished with a tour– this one is a great option.

We absolutely do not recommend taking a Plitvice Lakes day trip from Dubrovnik, though you’ll find the occasional enterprising tour company offering them.

How much does it cost to visit the Plitvice Lakes?

The ticket price for visiting the Plitvice Lakes varies throughout the year, with the most expensive months to visit being June, July, August, and September (when ticket prices are roughly $45 USD/person for a one day ticket).

In the winter, tickets are at their cheapest, coming in at around $12 USD for a one-day adult ticket–so as you can see, prices vary dramatically!

One and two-day tickets are available, and discounts are available for students and children.

Be sure to keep an eye on the ticket prices–they have almost doubled since we first visited Plitvice in 2015 and will likely continue to climb. You can find the most up-to-date information on prices here .

Which is better: Plitvice Lakes Entrance 1 or 2?

We recommend starting at Entrance 1 for your first (or only, as the case may be) day in the park.

Arriving via Entrance 1 will allow you to start your day by admiring one of the most famous viewpoints in Plitvice Lakes National Park, explore the Lower Lakes, and then make your way to the ferry after a couple of hours of exploring and head to the Upper Lakes.

When is Plitvice Lakes National Park open?

The park is open year-round, 365 days per year, though some trails and access points close depending on weather–for example, the Upper Lakes often close during the winter.

Like most national parks, Plitvice has longer hours in the summer months. You can check official park hours for your dates here .

Can you swim in the Plitvice Lakes?

Nope! Leave your bathing suit at home–swimming is forbidden in the national park.

If you’d like to swim in some of Europe’s best waterfalls during your trip, we recommend checking out Krka National Park.

Can you bring food into Plitvice Lakes National Park?

Yes, and there are small convenience stores at the entrances selling snacks.

Of course, you’ll find more selection and better prices if you shop a bit further from the park.

Alternatively, there are some restaurants and snack stands available inside the park, so you won’t go hungry either way.

If you only have one day in Plitvice Lakes National Park, this is a fantastic way to spend it!

The Plitvice itinerary outlined here makes for a full day, but you’ll see most of the famous viewpoints as well as some of Plitvice’s less well-known but still stunning corners.

If you have longer in the parks, you can either explore more slowly, perhaps by focusing on the Lower Lakes one day and the Upper Lakes the next (that’s how we structured our first visit), or add in more trails and viewpoints.

The official national park website has several suggested programs for exploring the park that provide a good overview of what options you have–if you have a half-day or less to spend in Plitvice, for example, they have a program for that!

Keep in mind that this sample Plitvice Lakes itinerary assumes that you’ll be visiting in the summer, when the park is open the longest. Keep an eye on the time if you’re visiting during the offseason!

Morning: Start at Entrance 1 and explore the Lower Lakes.

By kicking off your visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park at Entrance 1, you’ll start your explorations of the park by immediately walking up to one of the most famous views of the lakes: the overview of Veliki Slap (aka the Big Waterfall) from across the gorge.

It’s a magnificent sight, especially in the early-morning light, and a great way to start your day.

Once you finish snapping 10,000 photos, head down the trail to the boardwalks, where you’ll be able to make your way around the Lower Lakes at a leisurely pace.

Veliki Slap as seen from across the gorge near Entrance 1 to the Plitvice Lakes Croatia

Mid-Day: Eat lunch near the lakes and hop the boat to the Upper Lakes.

As you follow the trails through the Lower Lakes, you’ll eventually arrive Kozjačka Draga restaurant and a large surrounding picnic area, which is located right next to the dock where you can board the ferry to the Upper Lakes.

This is a great place to rest and have lunch, whether that’s your own packed lunch or something from the restaurant.

The food at Kozjačka Draga is exactly what you might expect from a restaurant inside a national park: simple, expensive for the area, but filling enough.

After you finish eating and resting, it’s time to board the ferry across Lake Kozjak!

The ferry runs regularly, so join the lineup of people waiting whenever you’re ready.

Be sure to have your ticket ready when you get ready to board–since only one ride is included with your park ticket, the park staff will stamp it as you board.

Grab an outside seat if you can–the views as you cross the lake are lovely!

Afternoon: Follow the path around the Upper Lakes to Entrance 3.

As you wind further and further along the Upper Lakes, the waterfalls will start to be a bit more spread out–but so will the crowds.

This is where you’ll find some of the most peaceful lake views of the day, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to enjoy them alone for a few minutes!

The paths (a combination of wooden boardwalks over the lakes and traditional trails alongside them) are well-marked and will eventually lead to the tram’s Station 3, where you can return to the Lower Lakes and position yourself closer to Entrance 1.

From there, you can enjoy a little more time with the lakes, and potentially return to some of your favorite boardwalk views from the morning to see them under different lighting conditions.

Early Evening: Find the postcard view of the Plitvice Lakes.

What better way to close out a day visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park than by taking in its most famous view?

There are two ways to get the famous postcard view over the Plitvice Lakes (you know, the view all the tour companies use to sell their day trips and that is the top photo on this post!)–and no, a drone is not one of them (drones are not allowed in Plitvice, so leave them at home).

First option: climb up the steep staircase near Veliki Slap. This was closed on our recent visit, but it’s generally an option. The downside of this option is that you’ll then need to climb back down, cross the lakes via boardwalk, and climb back up on the other side to reach Entrance 1 and fetch your car again.

The other way requires a bit of a drive, but is also a bit less hassle if you do it at the end of the day like this Plitvice itinerary suggests: head to 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27” E via car, park near the trailhead, and hike 5-10 minutes down the trail.

We lucked out during our first visit to the park and stayed a short walk from here, and we had no idea how lucky we were at the time!

Bear in mind that while you won’t generally find any park staff or get your ticket checked here, the area is part of Plitvice Lakes National Park and you technically need a valid ticket with you to visit the viewpoint.

Arrive as soon as the gates open… or even a little before.

Trust me: the experience you’ll have at Plitvice, especially during the busy summer months, will be dramatically different if you’re one of the first to hit the boardwalks than if they’re already congested by the time you get there.

As one of the most incredible national parks in Europe , it’s rightfully extremely popular!

During high season, purchase tickets in advance.

In 2019, Croatia introduced an online ticketing system for Plitvice Lakes National Park, which allows you to purchase timed tickets before you arrive, which then must be redeemed at the entrance number and time you selected when buying the tickets.

Tickets are still available to purchase at the park, however, the number of visitors per day has been capped at 10,000–so if you show up too late in the day, especially during the summer, you may find yourself unable to visit that day.

Several small waterfalls in Plitvice Lakes National Park surrounded by karst cliffs and pouring into turquoise lakes

If possible, spend at least one full day at the lakes.

Even if you only visit Plitvice for a day, you’ll get so much more out of your visit if you’re able to stay the whole way through instead of squeezing in a few hours at the park (at the most crowded time of day with the harshest lighting conditions) on a day trip.

… Which means ideally, you’ll spend a night nearby.

Seriously: it’s worth setting aside the time during your trip to Croatia to spend a night at the Plitvice Lakes!

Don’t be afraid to climb!

If you look closely along the trails when exploring the Plitvice Lakes , especially around the Upper Lakes, you’ll notice several opportunities to climb up to a higher trail or vantage point–and the views are virtually always worth the effort.

Be prepared for crowds.

With over 1 million visitors each year and skyrocketing international popularity, there’s no doubt about it: visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia means dealing with a lot of crowds… especially during the beautiful summer.

You can mitigate this by showing up early (and staying late), traveling outside of peak season, and wandering further up the trails than most, but come mentally prepared for the fact that you generally won’t have those beautiful boardwalks all to yourself.

The Plitvice Lakes are in a very rural area.

Because of this, restaurant and hotel choices are limited, which of course lends itself to a selection of subpar restaurants that charge expensive prices for the area.

We recommend checking reviews before sitting down, enjoying the food for what it is, and generally accepting that you won’t have the best food of your Croatia trip while here.

If you are road-tripping to Plitvice, consider stopping at Rastoke on the way!

The village of Rastoke is absolutely beautiful, with waterfalls that literally run through the town and under the buildings–including under a couple of very picturesque antique mills!

We love Rastoke and think it’s definitely worth visiting (it won’t take more than an hour or two to stop by, explore, and grab a cup of coffee at one of the cafes), but it’s best to see it before you arrive at the Plitvice Lakes–as lovely as the waterfalls at Rastoke are, they’ll be underwhelming after experiencing Plitvice itself.

Ideally, you’ll want to spend at least one night either in or practically next door to Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes to help ensure that you beat the crowds to the park!

There are three hotels in the park itself, including a mid-range option at Hotel Plitvice and a (somewhat) more luxury choice at Hotel Jezero .

The budget option, Hotel Bellevue , gets more mediocre reviews than the other two but still offers an excellent location.

Be sure to book as soon as you can commit to dates if you’d like to stay in the park, as these hotels fill up fast!

However, there are also lots of home and apartment rentals right outside the park.

Keep in mind that as this is a rural area, you won’t find many large hotels unless you’re willing to drive a bit further.

Well-reviewed options like this guesthouse are fairly typical for the area–many options are part of small guesthouses that are housed in converted multi-family homes, that sort of thing.

Check rates & book your stay at Hotel Plitvice , Hotel Jezero , or Hotel Bellevue now!

When visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, you’ll likely use a variety of methods for getting around, thanks to the park’s fantastic infrastructure.

Here are the most popular.

Obviously, hiking is the most popular and useful way to get around Plitvice Lakes National Park, and how you’ll spend the bulk of your time there.

The trails are extremely well-maintained and generally fairly smooth to walk across, so this is hardly mountain-climbing, but you’ll want to be comfortable with uneven terrain and moderate to severe inclines and declines to hike through the park without limits.

You won’t drive your car into the park itself, per se, but road tripping is, hands down, the best way to get to the Plitvice Lakes and get around the area as a whole.

Parking is available near each entrance, and you can also use your car to get close to the postcard viewpoint, though you’ll need to park your car and walk the final 5-10 minutes.

For driving to the Plitvice Lakes, we recommend searching for a rental via Discover Cars , which will search multiple rental companies to help you find the best price and rental contract for your Plitvice Lakes vacation.

Check rates & book your rental car for your Plitvice Lakes road trip today!

Plitvice’s tram stops at three stations throughout the park, including near Entrance 3, and on both of our visits, we’ve hiked all the way to Station 3 and then taken the tram back down to the more populated areas of the park.

The tram itself has beautiful views of the lakes, but most importantly, it allows you to explore the less crowded sections of the Upper Lakes without worrying about having to hike back!

The trams run every 30 minutes.

The ferry across Lake Kozjak will take you from the Lower Lakes to the Upper Lakes (or vice versa), and one ride is included with your ticket price when visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Because only one ride is included, we recommend riding the ferry out to the Upper Lakes, hiking up to Station 3, and then taking the tram back down when you’re ready to make your way back toward Entrance 1.

Ferry crossing Lake Kozjak in Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia as seen from above through a patch of trees

If you don’t want to drive yourself or take a tour when visiting the Plitvice Lakes , there is a bus that runs to the park, stopping near Entrance 1 and Entrance 2.

If you choose to go this route, plan carefully to ensure that you’re staying near a bus stop!

While you’ll want to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park in either the late spring, summer, or very early fall for the most popular park experience that is most commonly photographed, the Plitvice Lakes are absolutely a year-round destination and deserves to be on your list of what to do in Croatia .

This part of Croatia receives 4 distinct seasons, so while the greenery surrounding the lakes is lovely, don’t despair if your trip happens at an off-peak time–not only will there be fewer crowds, but just imagine how beautiful the lakes would look surrounded by fall foliage or snow!

Personally, we have our hearts set on visiting during the fall foliage season one day.

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and an epic trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park is definitely a case of better safe than sorry. Check travel insurance policy inclusions and prices for your trip here .

Camera  — We recently upgraded to our  Sony a7R III  and absolutely  adore  it, but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

Hat — Parts of Plitvice Lakes National Park are very shaded, however, if you thoroughly explore the trails, you will also spend quite a bit of time in direct sun.

Closed-Toe Shoes — You definitely won’t need hiking boots to explore the Plitvice Lakes, but comfortable, closed-toe shoes that you’re happy to walk for hours in are best!

Snacks — Food in the park tends to be pricey, so be sure to pack some of your own snacks!

Comfortable Day Bag  — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable. Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

Great article! Looking forward to our May 2020 trip to Plitvice. Thanks for the info. Wish we were young enough to do what you are doing. Keep traveling.

Thank you so much, Sharon! Hope you guys enjoy the park!

Such a beautiful park. I was there when it was entirely covered by snow!

How cool! We’d love to visit during a snowfall one day.

Are there any benches along the way to rest at for the older set that do not have endurance anymore What route would you suggest for the elderly set? Maybe a mile walk would be about it

There are some benches, but it’s also a bit of a climb to most spots. I’d recommend starting at Entrance 1, as you’ll come to the view of the big waterfall almost immediately and can continue from there depending on how you’re feeling.

The postcard view is also a pretty short walk from these coordinates, and you can drive almost all the way there: 44°54’9″ N 15°36’27”

Other than that, you may try reaching out to the park and asking if they have a shuttle from the parking lot to the entrance or consider arranging for a driver. Even walking from the main parking lot to the entrance is a bit of a walk, unfortunately.

This is wonderful! My family and I are going to arrive at plitvice lakes at 1:15.  We are going to stay the night and explore the park till 4 the next day. What routes should we take the first and second day? Thank you!

Thanks, Tina!

In your case, I’d probably do the Upper Lakes the first day since they’re a bit less crowded and you’ll be arriving in the middle of the day. In the early evening, consider driving over to the postcard viewpoint to enjoy that before calling it a night.

The next morning, head to Entrance 1 as soon as (or before) the gates open and enjoy the most iconic spots!

I will be arriving at a busy time (around 10:30), and the next day I will have 2 hours to explore. What routes would you recommend for those times?

With such limited time, I’d personally head right to Entrance 1 and battle the crowds to see as much of the Lower Lakes as you can in that timeframe. Luckily, you’ll come across the iconic view of Veliki Slap almost immediately, so there’s a quick payoff!

If you’re driving yourself, keep in mind that parking can be a challenge, and you’ll likely have a bit of a schlep before officially entering the park.

It doesn’t include a hotel pickup, but the directions to the tour office are very easy to follow. You’ll be first traveling on a comfortable coach with climate control, spacious seating, and big windows for unobstructed views of the varied Croatian landscapes.

During the ride, your guide will tell you all about the places along the way, as well as some interesting facts about the Plitvice Lakes so you have some background knowledge by the time you arrive.

Make sure to get your camera ready by the time you and your group arrive to Plitvice. Here, you’ll see what’s likely the bluest water you’ve witnessed before. This rich blue glow is thanks to the specific type of algae that grow in this series of lakes.

The slow and steady shifting and dissolving of rock over thousands of years created these pools, and the soft limestone helped to create the chain-like barriers. Pair that with the cascades that trickle into them, the stalactites, channels, and moss, and you have an almost unreal prehistoric paradise.

One of the highlights of this magical tour is the panoramic boat ride, where you’ll be able to see hidden gems up close and personal. The attention to detail and organization from the staff only makes it an even better time.

The guides are incredibly friendly, and you can tell they genuinely enjoy their job and making sure you have a fabulous time. On your way to this national wonder, they’ll teach you about Croatian history along with specific facts about the Lakes.

Something that also really made a big difference was the logistics upon arrival to the national park. Only someone who is well-versed in the crowd and tourist situation/habits would be able to organize the tour in a way so as to avoid all the lines.

This UNESCO World Heritage site has quite the background, and its unique beauty makes it easy to see why it has this designation since the 1970s.

Once you arrive to the park, your guides will ask you about any preferences you may have in routes or sightseeing. They are very knowledgeable about the park layout, and can plan according to your interests.

We highly recommend taking either a train trip around the park for a serene sightseeing tour, or take a boat trip right through the center of the forest. The trekking around the park is also a blast, as you’ll get to see breathtaking nature from perspectives you wouldn’t otherwise experience.

The guides are usually more than happy to take photos for you, so you have some great mementos to take home and share with loved ones. These picturesque lakes are certainly a fantastic background or focus of any photo!

5. Plitvice Lakes Full Day Excursion from Split

  • Duration: 12 hours
  • Departure:  Ul. Čulića dvori 6, 21000, Split
  • Departure Time: 8:00 am
  • Includes:  All taxes, fees and handling charges, transport by air conditioned fully equipped coach with free WIFI, hotel pickup and drop-off ON REQUEST (downtown Split hotels only), expert local guide

We couldn’t write up a guide on Plitvice Lakes without including this comprehensive tour! The Plitvice Lakes Full Day Excursion from Split is one regularly booked by entire families, due to how well they accommodate children as well as older adults.

This is one of the more “complete” tours in that you’ll not only have time to hike around at your own pace, but also have the chance to go on a scenic train ride or boat trip.

This tour starts a bit later than the others we’ve covered, and you’ll meet at their tour offices at 8:00 am.

This gives you a little extra time to grab a coffee or sleep in a bit! You’ll need the extra energy, too, with all the adventuring you’re about to do on this excursion. Transportation will be on an air-conditioned coach, which is one of the more comfortable we’ve ridden in.

Complete with big windows and free WiFi, you’ll always have something to entertain yourself with. The ride is a few hours each way, so it’s nice to have that option just in case.

Once you arrive, you’ll head out on a scenic walk through the dense woods which surround the electric turquoise waters! One of the highlights is the 255-foot waterfall that travels into the clear lake sitting below it. Enjoy a scenic boat ride on Lake Kozjak before continuing on a picturesque train ride.

The train ride is a favorite of many, offering breathtaking views that won’t be able to be seen on foot. After, enjoy a delicious lunch of local dishes at a nearby restaurant or alternatively, your own packed lunch.

Depending on what route you choose to take, you can walk around the Plitvice Lakes for hours. The water flows from the highest lake, Proscansko, down to Kozjak Lake, which is the last upper lake of the 12. 3. Veliki Slap Waterfall

Right next to the lower lakes, plummeting from 78 meters high, you’ll find the Veliki Slap waterfall. Unlike the smaller falls of Plitvice Lakes National Park, this gem is fed by waters from the Potok River. The others are formed by excess water flowing from the upper lakes into the lower lakes.

The quickest way to get to the waterfall is to enter from entrance 1. Walk along the wooden path, up the stairs to the top of the waterfall, and look out over the impressive landscape.

4. Kozjak Lake

Lake Kozjak is the largest and deepest lake of all the Plitvice lakes. Known as the last of the Upper Lakes, it covers a total length of 2,35 kilometers and is about 48 meters deep. Though you can hike this distance around the lake, you can also take the small ferry across.

To experience the natural beauty of Plitvice Lakes, you embark on one of the walking trails in the park. These routes have good signs, making sure you know exactly where to go. The trails are fairly easy, though lots of the wooden walkways don’t have any railing, so always pay attention.

Entrances to the Park

There are two main entrances to the park, which you must choose between when booking a ticket. Entrance 1 lies just above the Lower Lakes, while the southern entrance ( entrance 2 ) is right next to the Upper Lakes. At entrance 1, you’ll also find the powerful Veliki Slap waterfall, which you can admire from a viewing platform.

Tip: There’s plenty of parking available at both entrances, even in peak summer season. Though, expect to walk a bit to the entrance if you’ve booked a later timeslot to enter. We recommend visiting earlier in the day.

Choosing an entrance is especially good if you only want to see a part of the park. However, if you’re exploring all of Plitvice Lakes, we recommend choosing entrance 1, starting at the Lower Lakes, where it’s often a bit quieter.

Trails

There are as many as 8 different routes you can choose between (4 at each entrance), ranging from 3 to 18 kilometers in distance. You can view a map at the entrance and follow the clearly marked signs throughout the park, looping past the stunning sights.

We started from entrance 1 and did route C, which starts at the wonderful Veliki Slap waterfall and Lower Lakes. From there, you cross Kozjak Lake to the Upper Lakes and eventually take the visitor’s train back to entrance 1. This way, you can see all the sights without walking for a very long time. It took us about 5 hours, with lots of photo stops and a break for drinks in between.

Entrance Fee & Opening Times

To be able to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park, you have to order your tickets in advance online via the park’s e-ticket system . Only a limited number of people are allowed into the park to preserve the incredible nature better, so it’s best to book online to avoid having no ticket. During the peak season, we recommend booking your tickets well in advance or a day trip from Split or Zadar.

You’ll have to select an entrance gate and a time you want to enter. This is so crowds are spread out throughout the day. After you enter, you can stay as long as you like. The entrance prices change per month:

Low season: Jan – Mar + Nov – Dec:

  • Adults: 10 EUR (11,25 USD)
  • Children 7 – 18: 4.50 EUR (5.05 USD)
  • Students: 6.50 EUR (7.50 USD)

Shoulder season: Apr, May + Oct:

  • Adults: 23.5 EUR (26.5 USD)

The park is open year-round, though the hours differ per season. During the summer months, June – August, the park’s open between 7 AM – 8 PM, closing only an hour earlier in the fall (Sept-Oct). From November till March, the park’s open from 8 AM – 4 PM and from 8 AM – 7 PM in April and May.

Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes is a must-see on your trip to Croatia and one of the most popular things to do. Here are some tips to make your visit to this incredible location unforgettable:

  • If you’re visiting during the high season, try to go as early as possible and book your ticket in advance through the park’s website. Be patient on the narrow trails as you share them with others. Crowds tend to go down after 3 PM.
  • Plitvice Lakes can get very hot during midday, so come prepared with lightweight clothes, lots of water, sunscreen , and a good hat.

  • There are only a few bins along the trails, so please keep your items with you. Leave no trace and stay on the marked trails in order to preserve this protected area.
  • You won’t need any hiking gear, but do need good shoes! Don’t wear any flip-flops on the wooden trails.
  • It’s possible to visit with kids, but due to the pathways, you can’t bring a stroller.
  • Go to the toilet before entering the park. Though there are a few inside Plitvice Lakes, they’re spread out, and routes may take a bit longer than you think.

Where to Stay

Although you can visit Plitvice Lakes National Park on a day trip from cities like Zadar, Sibenik , or Split , it’s in a beautiful area worth exploring for a few days. There are a few hotels inside the park where you can stay the night before exploring the park. We stayed here next to the park entrance.

Alternatively, only a short drive away, you’ll find more options in Rastovača and cheaper options in Jezerce.

Best Time to Visit Plitvice Lakes

There’s no wrong time to see the incredible Plitvice Lakes, as every season offers a different sight over the protected area. Summer is the most popular time to visit the park, though it’s also the busiest time and a period with less rain (lower water levels).

As it lies in the northern mountains, Plitvice has a different climate than its Mediterranean coast, with slightly cooler temperatures. In spring, the lakes will have more water and powerful falls. In autumn, colors change around the park; in winter, the greenery often sees a layer of snow, creating another magical experience. Note that parts of the park can have limited access when you visit outside of the summer period.
