Successful Strategies to Manage Growth and Risk on the Busiest Ship Channel in the US

Did this boat tour as a huge group that rented out the boat! Free and educational tour. It went down the bayou and then turned around to go back. Before boarding, they passed out small water bottles and then at the midway point, there was water and soda for everyone. During the ride, there are speakers that gives information about what we are seeing on each side and some history. I wish there was a bit more educational information though. The crew were great and helpful. Really nice that Houston has such a tour, and it's free! Definitely cool to see Houston from this angle.

sam houston ship channel tour

I would highly recommend this trip for anyone! If you are a geek about Houston history, you will love it! We went on the bat tour and it was fantastic! But I definitely want to go back for the longer one that focuses on history. Can't wait!

Excellent trip. The captain and staff all did a great job with trip management. Offered interesting details about the ship channel and history. They offered complimentary drinks during the two hour trip. Most welcome due to the hot outside temperatures. By the way there is plenty of seats inside with air conditioning. The operation is kid friendly. Children received a color/ project book. You must have reservations but we'll worth the efforts. A true must do trip for all Houston area families.

The ship channel boat tour is a must see for those who appreciate the history of the city of Houston and relative importance of the ship channel. The tour starts on the boat Sam Houston docked at the port of Houston on the chip channel. It's a 90 minute tour where there is a tour of the ship channel, an informative narrative that discusses a lot of the sites that you're seeing and a lot of the history that lead to the creation and development of the area. it also includes complimentary coffee and soda. The tour is free and all that is required is for you to make a prior reservation. I believe the boat saleregardless of the weather because it has both indoor and outside viewing areas. Caution this is not a party boat and it probably will bore small children. Well worth the trip.

sam houston ship channel tour

Mike, you did it again. A fantastic trip. We have finally made it to the Sam Houston Boat tour and are so glad we did. This is not a party boat or a particularly scenic tour but the information about the port and Houston's place in the infrastructure of the port, it's place in Houston's and the USA economy is very educational. First this tour is about 90 minutes and free but you need to sign up for it 4 to 6 weeks ahead of time as it books up fast. You can sign up on the web. Many school age children are taken on this tour as part of class outings but if you didn't grow up here it is worth the trip. The boat is air conditioned so you can take it on hot or rainy days as well as a nice day. The official port area starts a bit south of where Buffalo Bayou pours into the Navigation channel, it was very sad to see the amount of plastic garbage that makes it way down this bayou and the others that all feed into this area.

The boat

I've been wanting to do the ship channel tour for a long time so I was so excited when we were able to book a spot! We took the maiden voyage after Covid shut everything down today!! It was really cool! The staff are so kind and professional, the interior is clean, spacious, and cool. Outside we were able to walk around the boat to see different things better. The guide pointed out locations and explained the history. It was amazing to see the ships up close - they are HUGE- and these are considered "smaller"! Also, they offered complimentary coffee and soft drinks/water which was very nice and welcome. It is free and really one of the neatest and unique things to do here in Houston.

sam houston ship channel tour

I would like to kinda quote Rachael ," i didn't know there were docks" in Houston. It was a pleasant surprise when a friends suggested we go for a boat ride and all we need to do is register. We were doubtful all the way along but were in for a welcome ride. Supposedly, there are 3 rides in a day, one at 8 am, 2 pm and then 6 pm. We chose the one at 6 pm. It is a total 90 minute ride and if you are anything of a sunset on water person like me, you will just love the boat ride. Initially we are all in the cabin are the guide gives some basic instructions. He tell us where the coffee is located, where the restrooms are, and how you need to not lean over the railings and also that half way through the ride there is coke, water, etc available at the back of the boat. The moment he said u can step out, the whole crowd just went for the door. It is deep water so do be careful with yourself and your things and hold on to your naughty kids. The backdrop for the sunset though is not very appealing, huge chemical /oil factories spewing gases, some of which reach the boat and spoil the fun but if you can ignore that then it is such a romantic setting - a speeding boat, and if u are at the back of the boat, the sky bursts out into evening colors ad the sun sets right in front of you. They probably were announcing about the history , or more details about the place itself but we were so engrossed outside that we did not catch any of that. Clean well maintained boat, very friendly staff, coffee and juice onboard for free besides the free ride itself - it is not expected but maybe a tip is in order. Should visit this place and be a true Houstonian.

This is a hidden gem of Houston. Make sure you make your reservation because the seating is limited. Not your sexy tourist scenic tour, but a very informative. You do have to go through a guard shack and they do check your ID, they are locate in the the port of Houston as you can imagine the security procedures. The tour itself is very informative you learn about Port of Houston. If you are standing outside, it is hard to hear through the speakers. They also offer inside air condition seating for those of you don't want to be in the sun. They offer complimentary coffee for those are 18 years and older to start out the trip. When they turn the boat around they offer complimentary soft drinks and water. Notice I keep mention the words complimentary and free. This tour would cost you nothing, but the time and gas to get here. It is kids friendly and educational. Definitely one of the hidden gem in the Houston. 216

I went on this tour today after having booked my reservation about 7 weeks ago. This tour is just that popular and it also probably has something to do with it being FREE. Making the reservation is conveniently offered online however I knew of some people who had difficulty with the reservation process and had to fall to the backup option-the old fashioned telephone call. My tour was scheduled to leave at 10:00 a.m and I arrived at 9:35 a.m. which was plenty early. The Yelp directions are accurate. You first arrive at Gate 8 where the driver has to show ID to the guard to enter. Then you drive down a 300 yard palm tree lined drive to the tours' dedicated parking lot. At the location they have a large restroom facility with vending machines. People wait near the boats entrance until about 5 minutes before departure. Then a crew member checks ID's again to match the reservation list as you board. Kids are allowed on board without ID's with an adult. My tour left the dock promptly at 10:00 a.m. At 10:01 as we were 40 yards away from the dock a family of 4 showed up and we left them. Moral of the story, Don't Be Late! They will leave you! We proceeded down the Ship Channel passing many large ships and barges along with refineries, docks and processing plants. We went under the I 610 bridge all the way to the Washburn tunnel (45 minutes) where we turned around and came back. At the turnaround everyone on board is offered a Coke Product soft drink or bottled water. There is also a water cooler on board along with restrooms. During the tour the Captain narrates points of interest along the way. This is an educational tour. Scenic wise it leaves a lot to be desired from a beauty standpoint. Kids will love this tour being so close to the big ships. Other than as we were leaving or approaching our dock, we were allowed outside to walk around the 95 foot long boat M/V Sam Houston built in 1958. This allowed great views and photo ops plus having the wind in your face. If the weather is not agreeable to you the indoor cabin has big tinted windows and is air conditioned and comfortable with nice seats. Our tour arrived back early by 10 minutes of schedule. However, it can take longer than 90 minutes due to ship traffic. While they limit the number of reservations per tour to the limit of the boat (100) it is very rare that 100 people actually take the tour. This is because reservations are usually made many weeks in advance to get a space but because they are free, people will forget or something else will come up to keep them from coming. This means your tour will most likely have fewer than 100 attending. On the Saturday of my tour, I estimated maybe 50 people were on board even though it was sold out. But remember they don't take walk ons so be sure you have a reservation or I wouldn't show up. Finally remember, don't be late!!

Here is a view of ships on the Houston Ship Channel. On Port of Houston/Houston Ship Channel Tours and San Jacinto State Park Tours, we normally have lunch at Monument Inn. The restaurant borders on the Ship Channel and has magnificent views, in addition to great food.

 alt=

This is another view of the Battleship Texas.

 alt=

Started in 1822, some version of the Lynchburg Ferry has operated over the section of Buffalo Bayou that is now known as the Houston Ship Channel for almost 200 years.

 alt=

This view of the San Jacinto Monument includes the Reflecting Pool. Built for the centennial anniversary of independence from Mexico, the San Jacinto Monument opened four years late in 1940, not 1936. It is the tallest monument in the United States because it has a star of Texas on top of it.

Here is a view of the San Jacinto Monument ftom Independence Parkway. It is 567 feet/173 meters tall. Alfred Finn was the architect.

Ships on the Houston Ship Channel

Due to the August 2017 Hurricane Harvey’s damage and the Port of Houston Authority (POHA) changing schedules, our offerings have changed. All of the tours cost the same amount. However, they may start at 3 different times, due to when the POHA is operating tour boats. We try to begin each tour after the morning rush hour and end before the evening rush hour and or sunset.

All of the tours stop for lunch at Monument Inn. This is one of the best seafood restaurants in the greater Houston area.  It is located along the Houston Ship Channel (HSC). One can watch ships, tankers, barges, and tugboats passing as we enjoy a savory meal. Its views are unsurpassed. Bring $8.00 to $40.00 for lunch depending on what you order. Most meals are between $15.00 and $25.00.

Tours A, B1, B2, C1, and C2 include riding on the POHA M/V Sam Houston boat. All of these tours have the same itinerary, but in different orders due to the time that the boat departs. At the time that I am writing this, January 16, 2019, the POHA no longer offers Sunday tours so Tour A, which is on Sunday, is not available. The POHA also does not offer tours on Monday. For several years, the POHA did not offer tours on Saturdays. Now, it occasionally offers such tours. We are keeping each of the tours listed on our website because we cannot predict when the POHA will change its policies again.

The POHA allows scheduling boat rides a maximum of 3 months in advance. Many tours fill immediately. We recommend that if you want a tour involving a boat, contact us AT LEAST 2 MONTHS IN ADVANCE. This is especially true if you have a large group of 20 more people. A boat may have some vacancies, but not enough to accommodate everyone if you have a large group and you wait too long. Furthermore, we do not reserve any tours until we have received a non-refundable deposit. You must make a financial commitment if you want us to work for you. If you hesitate to send in the non-refundable deposit, other parties may reserve the seats in the meantime.

The ship is closed periodically for maintenance.

For boat rides, you must provide us with a list containing the name of every person who will be participating on the tour before a reservation can be made. Each participant must bring photo identification on the day of the tour. A driver’s license or passport is sufficient. Purses are subject to inspection. Backpacks and oversized purses are prohibited. The POHA’s security policies are not enforced consistently, but it is better to err on the side of having this information rather than being rejected on the day that the reservation is attempted or on the day of the tour.

For groups of 15 or more touring on buses or full-size vans, we can show videos of the history of the Houston Ship Channel, Houston Pilots, oil, the current operations, and more. For any group, we can distribute magazines and newsletters about the Port of Houston, provide you with a quiz about the Houston Ship Channel, and narratives.

Private boats are not permitted to traverse the Houston Ship Channel. The HSC’s operations are a matter of national security with oil refineries and other plants along the HSC. Houston is the energy capital of the United States (US).

Tour Information

Tours A, B1 and B2, C1, and C2 all include going on a 75 to 90-minute boat ride on the Houston Ship Channel. The boat rides starts at the Turning Basin and goes no further than the Beltway 8 bridge and often not that far. It is limited in its scope. The POHA provides free coffee and a soft drink or water on the boat ride. It has interior and exterior, covered and uncovered areas, from which one can observe the Channel, docks, vegetation, fish, and birds. It is a smooth ride and the boat captain will provide information over the public address speakers. Dress appropriately for the weather. Expect to get some spray on yourself if you are outside at the front of the boat. The maximum capacity is 100. We are to arrive 30 minutes before the boat is to launch. You will be able to use bathrooms at the pavilion at the loading dock and in the lower deck of the boat.

Tour D covers a much broader area, going twice as far as the boat travels, with driving through or by the Barbours Cut Container Terminal, the Bayport Container Terminal, the former Bayport Cruise Ship Terminal in Pasadena, the ExxonMobil plant in Baytown (the second largest oil refinery in the United States), and stops along the Houston Ship Channel and Galveston Bay in multiple cities. Beginning in 1956, most freight has been delivered in containers so that trucks or trains can conveniently take it across America with minimal time and labor spent loading and unloading. Tour D does not include a boat ride. It goes through or by 17 cities and all 5 transits over, under, and on the Channel. We will drive through Channelview, La Porte, Deer Park, Baytown, Morgan’s Point, Sylvan Beach, El Jardin del Mar, Shoreacres, Pasadena, Seabrook, Kemah, and El Lago, in addition to Houston. It is potentially available every day of the year and can be scheduled at any time without providing names of each participant or a two-month lead period.

Each tour takes you:

  • To the original Port of Houston, also known as Allen’s Landing in downtown Houston, dating to August 1836.
  • Over the Houston Ship Channel on the Sidney Sherman/I-610 Houston Ship Channel bridge. Both sides of the bridge are in Houston.
  • Under the Houston Ship Channel (if in sedans and vans) in the Washburn Tunnel, provided that it is open. It connects Pasadena on the south side to Galena Park on the north side. This is the only under water tunnel in Texas.
  • Over the Houston Ship Channel on the Sam Houston Tollway/Beltway 8. It connects Channelview on the north side with Pasadena on the south side.
  • On the Lynchburg Ferry (if in sedans and vans) crossing the Houston Ship Channel, provided that it is operating. It connects La Porte on the south side to the community of Lynchburg on the north side.
  • By the refineries of Pasadena and La Porte.
  • To San Jacinto State Park, the San Jacinto Battlefield, San Jacinto Monument, and the Battleship Texas.
  • Through or along Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, and Jacinto City.

Port of Houston

The Port of Houston reserves the right to cancel a tour without advanced notice. Houston Historical Tours has no control over this. We serve as a conduit for this tour; we provide transportation and narratives, and take you over multiple crossings of the Houston Ship Channel. If you have your own transportation and only want a boat ride, you can contact the Port of Houston directly to schedule a free tour by going to http://www.portofhouston.com/community-outreach/sam-houston-boat-tour/tour-schedule/ or calling (713) 670-2400.

  • If you want a shorter tour of 5 hours, we can eliminate stopping at the San Jacinto State Park (SJSP) and Battleship Texas.
  • If you want a shorter tour of 4 hours, we can eliminate SJSP, the Battleship Texas, and a stop for lunch.

Bay Area Houston Magazine

Tour the houston ship channel by boat, hidden secret.

Many area residents are unaware that free boat tours of the Port of Houston are available

By Rod Evans

Like the majority of Houston area residents, my relationship with the Houston Ship Channel and the Port of Houston has largely been of the long distance variety. Sure, I’ve crossed over it probably 100 times via the 610 Loop bridge, but from that vantage point, some 135 feet over the water, the channel looks more like a full scale model than the living, breathing economic engine that it is.

Even if you’re afforded the opportunity to see the channel from ground level, the facility, with its towering cranes, massive vessels and sundry other industrial sized components, makes for an environment where it seems just wearing a hard hat does not offer nearly enough protection from the bodily harm that surely must be lurking around every corner.

But when I heard—quite to my surprise—that there’s a way to tour the channel via boat, I was immediately intrigued. When I discovered that said tour is offered free of charge, I was all over it.

The M/V Sam Houston has served as the Port of Houston’s tour boat since 1958. The 95-foot vessel is big enough to accommodate 90 passengers and features a wood paneled, air conditioned lounge with large windows, along with a spacious deck for viewing. The Sam Houston departs from the Sam Houston Pavilion for free, 90-minute tours of just a small portion of the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel, but there’s plenty to see during the relatively short trip.

A group of about 12 of us, including a couple of highly skeptical teenagers, boarded the Sam Houston on a recent Saturday afternoon not knowing fully what to expect on the tour. Touring the Ship Channel certainly isn’t like taking a picturesque journey along London’s Thames River or even a leisurely cruise around Lake Conroe. You’re not going to be awed by beautiful scenery. But you will be filled with a sense of wonder as you gaze upon ships large enough to block out the sun, buildings that look to have enough square footage to house the entire population of a small town and cranes that appear strong enough to lift heaven and Earth.

Eschewing the comfy confines of the cabin, we elect to see the sights from the deck of the Sam Houston as a tour guide points out interesting sights and offers tidbits of information over the deck speakers while we sail along with the boat’s recently installed low-emission engines purring in the background. I’m immediately struck by the sheer size of the tankers sitting at the docks and contemplate how long it must take to either load or off-load their precious cargo.

But despite the gargantuan size of the tankers, a deck hand tells us something that really throws me for a loop: the tankers we see docked in the port are actually just the ones that service the “super tankers” that are so large and displace so much water that they must anchor over 120 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico’s deeper waters. Because the average depth of the Ship Channel is 45 feet, the super tankers must wait offshore for the smaller tankers to load or off-load them. The deck hand says that some super tankers require at least 12 smaller ships to retrieve all of their cargo!

Another thought that crossed my mind is the Ship Channel and Port of Houston complex is an engineer’s playground. It required the expertise of virtually every type of engineer—structural, marine, mechanical, petroleum, etc.—to design and construct all of the public and private facilities along the banks of the channel, not to mention the actual process of dredging the waterway in the first place. And because the channel is a living entity of sorts, it requires constant maintenance by these same experts and many others in order for the channel to adapt to changes in weather, geography and the size of the vessels that call on the port.

As the Sam Houston pulled back into the dock at the pavilion, virtually every passenger exits with the same “Wasn’t that a nice way to spend 90 minutes?” look on their face and even our skeptical teenagers managed to have a good time.

The fact that the Sam Houston tours are offered free of charge only cements my belief that the excursions are one of those Houston area tourist attractions that flies under the radar. After being closed for the month of November for regularly scheduled maintenance, the Sam Houston resumes its schedule of Wednesday through Sunday tours in December at the Sam Houston Pavilion, located at 7300 Clinton Dr. (enter Gate 8). While the tour is free, reservations are required, so call ahead. Kids 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

For more information, visit Portofhouston.com or call 713-670-2416. It’s no cruise to Cozumel, but you’ll come away with a whole new appreciation of one of the world’s truly amazing industrial construction projects and a driving force in the Houston area’s economic development.

Princess Sails from Bayport

The recent four-day benefit cruise to Progreso, Mexico served as the official launch of Princess Cruises’ new service from the Port of Houston Authority’s Bayport Cruise Terminal.

The first-ever fundraising cruise, with 2,000 passengers onboard, supported “Cruising for a Cause,” which seeks to raise money for a pair of U.S. military organizations: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront.

Following that initial voyage, regular cruises by the Caribbean Princess will commence from the Bayport terminal, with a total of 27 sailings scheduled, while Princess’ Western Caribbean schedule calls at the ports of Costa Maya, Roatan, Belize City and Cozumel. Officials say the Emerald Princess will make Houston its home port for Western Caribbean sailings next year.

Princess is scheduled to call on the Bayport Cruise Terminal through 2015, and a study indicates the operation will create an economic impact of $2 million from each sailing, $50 million annually and add over 200 jobs to the greater Houston region.

Princess Cruises will be joined by the Norwegian Cruise Line in 2014 in calling the Bayport Terminal home. Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to bring its 2,374-passenger Norwegian Jewel to Houston for seven-day Western Caribbean cruises through 2017.

Port of Houston officials estimate the Princess and Norwegian cruise lines will bring more than 400,000 cruise passengers through the terminal from 2013 through 2017.

Turning Basin Contract Awarded

A $1.3 million construction contract was recently awarded to Grant MacKay Company by the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority to perform work related to the redevelopment plan for the Turning Basin Terminal.

The contract calls for the razing of selected buildings at the Turning Basin, as well as for the removal of existing concrete and steel building structures at multiple locations, asbestos abatement, security lighting, fencing and camera relocation.

There’s an App for That

The Port Authority has developed a mobile app that allows you to use your smart phone to check on the status of a container and its pick up availability. The Mobile Customer Access (MCA) app includes the following categories: terminal announcements, container availability, booking inquiry, vessel schedule, gate inquiry, portofhouston.com and terminal information. To download the app, mca.poha.com

There's only one way to tour the Port of Houston, and it's free

Pooja Lodhia Image

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) -- Did you know you could tour the Port of Houston?

Visitors have been boarding the M/V Sam Houston since 1958 for 90-minute educational tours, and it won't cost you anything.

"We get to see everything in action. Like, get hands on and actually see," explained Pasadena ISD maritime engineering student Nathan Phillips. "We talk about ships loading and unloading, but when we actually get to see it in person, it's better."

"What an engineering feat and what a great thing for Houston that most people don't know about," added visitor Gary Aman.

"The fact that they offer it at no charge is remarkable," said Gary's wife, Jo Aman. "What a great adventure!"

The Houston Ship Channel is private, so this is the only way to see what really happens out on the water.

You can book your tour through the Port of Houston's website .
