Mosaic Workshop

Activity: mosaic workshop – gaudí experience, discover the gaudi’s mosaic “trencadís”.

In this 2-hour workshop , we work with Gaudí’s mosaic technique, the “ trencadís ”.

Each participant makes a trencadís piece. Once finished the workshop, you can take your mosaic work with you back home!

It is a cultural, playful and creative activity for all participants starting the age of 5. It’s an ideal activity to do as a family, in groups or even individuals. We adapt the mosaic course to the characteristics of the group.

All about the mosaic experience

The workshop is an 8 minute walk from the Casa Vicens , Gaudí’s first commissioned building, in the area of Gràcia.

At the beginning of the workshop there is a brief explanation about the art of the mosaic and of Gaudí .

Livia Garreta , our mosaic teacher, is a famous mosaic artist. From her workshop in the neighbourhood of Gràcia she has been restoring, giving classes and creating her work during the past 28 years and dedicated her life to this catalan art, el trencadís.

Livia has also undertaken the restoration of the entrance to the famous Boqueria market which is located by las Ramblas, has participated in the mosaics of the Museum of Catalan Art Nouveau , and many more private works that she has executed for various residences throughout Barcelona.

Our experience includes:

  • A famous mosaic teacher
  • All materials
  • Bring home a trencadís piece

What to do in Barcelona

Enjoy barcelona in total comfort, the boulevard of broken tiles: gaudí’s most known mosaics.

One of most famous symbols of Barcelona’s identity, the mosaic technique used by Gaudí , like many artists in Catalan Art Nouveau, is still in vogue.

The name of this technique comes from the main feature perceived at first sight: broken tiles, plates and cups. Trencar means in Catalan ‘To break’,  hence  trencadís is the equivalent for ‘breakable’. The breakable pieces were originaly recycled for finishing uneven corners, and it is inspired by the the neo-mudejar style during the Arabic invasions in Spain as well as Opus tessellatum technique employed by the ancient romans.

Mosaics – Details from the Park Güell

Therefore, the trencadís mosaic –also known in France as Pique assiette – is clearly not invented by Gaudí himself. Certainly however, he and his fellow colleague Josep María Jujol together with many other modernista artists became the some of the most imaginative figures employing this peculiar art to fulfill their tridimensional fantasies.

It’s been said that the genius architect went to the ceramics factory from the company called Pujol i Bausis, and told them to literally take a handful of pieces.

The features of employing such recycling techniques are mainly to create new visual effects. Sometimes monochrome, sometimes with previously decorated ceramics

The effects achieved are staggering and diverse .

Casa Vicens: Even in his early creations, Gaudí applied the trencadís

Gaudí’s skillful application of the trencadís has become so known worldwide that most people even call it “the Gaudí Mosaic”, and is featured in many books . Among the most popular mosaics by Gaudí we would like to highlight the ones from Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Sagrada Familia, if you are in Barcelona, you can see the three of them in just one morning .

Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà

Lampposts with benches, by Art Nouveau Architect P. Falqués

The trencadís became Gaudí’s best ally for his two houses in the Passeig the Gracia, Barcelona’s most glamourous boulevard of broken tiles, where even the lampposts designed by Pere Falqués have benches covered with trencadís mosaic, perfectly matching the essence of La Pedrera : this house with no structural walls, nothing but pillars in charge, has no squared shapes, no edges.

One of Gaudí’s most visited masterpieces, also placed in the Passeig de Gràcia, the house he restored a century ago for the Batlló family is with no doubt a fairytale. It lies somewhere between mythology, futurism and archeology. From the street you can see trencadís mosaics all over the façade, an architectural impressionist painting, whereas from the inside, made entirely of blue ceramic fragments a waterfall pours down through the lightwell.

Trencadís detail from Casa Batlló

La Sagrada Família

The Japanese sculptor Etsuro Sotoo has been working for more than 35 years in the construction of the Sagrada Família with one question constantly popping in his mind: what would Gaudí do? No doubt the trencadís is such a resolutive technique, all pieces can be used, and Etsuro Sotoo has never doubted to apply it in the pinnacles and sculptures representing different simbologies of the Bible. Not only ceramics are being employed for the trencadís mosaics in the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, other more priced ones such as gold or Venice glass are reflecting the towers of this marvel.

Sagrada Familia: Fruits offered to the heaven

Skip the line to enjoy this artistic fantasy in total comfort with some of the best licensed guides in town; come and meet the trencadís, come and join the Gaudí Tour, and don’t let your amazement fall into pieces!

´My partner and I took a two-morning beginning workshop and we had a great experience. We learned what we needed to, and are confident in our next steps with this medium. This was all arranged through Arty Barcelona. I would gladly contact both women again for additional classes.´

‘My daughter and I spent 2 1/2 hrs. with Livia. What a great time we had making our ceations. She was very helpful and encouraging. We enjoyed every minute we were there. It was an excellent experience. We would rate it a 10+ out of 10.’

‘I took a class with Livia and loved it so much that I returned for yet another in the following week. Livia was warm, friendly and patient with me who do not speak Spanish or Catalan.  Her other local students who were regulars were very nice to me too, and I really enjoyed the short time I spend at Livia’s cozy studio with the other ladies.’

‘The mosaic class was a wonderful experience and one of the best things I had done during my trip in Barcelona. I strongly recommend the mosaic class to travelers – you will appreciate Gaudi’s works better after making a mosaic piece yourself and learning some simple “trencadis” techniques. And to top it off, you’ll have a lovely, unique handmade souvenir to take home afterwards as well!’

‘Livia makes you feel right at home in her studio. She helps you design and complete a mosaic project at just the right level of difficulty for you. Very friendly and talented!’

How to afford a family city break in Barcelona

I t’s hard to break my gaze, but when I do, settling on two young faces mesmerised as they stare at an architectural icon – mouths agog – is everything I need to see.

La Sagrada Familia – the cathedral which is still being built more than 140 years after construction first started, showcasing the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí – for which Barcelona is so well known – has to be seen to be believed.

Every element of its design is different from the next, and my two daughters, Rosie, 14, and Poppy, 11, appear to be lost for words – a very rare thing indeed.

We inch our way around every bit of building; spellbinding spires stretching up into the clear blue sky with pyramids of fruit perching deliciously atop.

This is the landmark everyone says you have to see if you come to Barcelona – and with good reason. Ageless beauty sits beside the majestic and modern with total pride. Weird and wonderful – every inch of the architecture is like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

The fact that we’re even here is a welcome surprise to us all, let alone gawping at Gaudi in 20-degree sunshine when it feels like it hasn’t stopped raining at home for months.

We’ve managed to escape for the Easter holidays after deciding a trip abroad was most definitely off the cards this year. With bills going up year upon year, sunny getaways are becoming less affordable. But when we unexpectedly managed to bag four days in Spain’s artiest city for £792 for all four of us, we all let out excited squeals.

I thought the days of bargain flights were over. Even if you book with a value airline, by the time you’ve added on baggage, it seems to be a fortune. But booking three months ahead, we secured four flights with Vueling for £234.77. Baggage is extra (though if you’re savvy and only going for a couple of nights, I would argue you could all pack an under-seat rucksack for free) and you can opt for cabin or hold, which starts from €10 (£8.50).

The hotel, we were less organised with, but even booking weeks before, we secured a basic family apartment at Atenea Calabria, in a relatively central location, for three nights, for £557. And that included a big old breakfast spread every morning that pleased the kids no end (9am doughnut, anyone?).

Once you get to Barcelona, of course, things can be as cheap or expensive as you like. When it comes to food and drink, after a big morning feast, we opt for a small snack or ice-cream around lunchtime, and then plump for an early sitting of tapas.

After pounding pavements all the way to the port – where we ogle yachts and people watch while basking in the warmth – we stumble across small but perfectly formed Perikete .

We scoff patatas bravas, cod croquettes, Spanish tortilla, Serrano ham, padron peppers, broken fried eggs and Manchego, as we sit on giant Estrella kegs upcycled into bar tables. A jug of deliciously fruity sangria, half a litre of Keller beer and a couple of Fanta Limons, and the damage is just £61 – a figure we can only dream our dinner bill amounts to when we eat out at home.

Arriving early means getting a table is easy, too (by 7pm, long queues are forming outside).

Another night, our weary legs fall into La Guapa & La Mala Tapas , where we order a similarly delicious array of treats. Repurposed old soda stream bottles are made into lights, black and white photographs of celebrities adorn the walls, tins are transformed into lampshades, bills come in sardines cans and 90s music blasts out of the speakers; it’s wonderful. £76 covers everything, including beer, Aperol spritz and soft drinks, and the portions are so big, we can’t eat everything.

Barcelona is also renowned for its food markets. The beautiful La Boqueria is the oldest and most famous, but with sweetie stalls replacing traditional food stands, we wander through Mercat de Santa Caterina and Mercat de Sant Antoni instead – an assault on the senses by anyone’s standards.

But while food and drink is very much affordable in Barcelona, the big attractions can be expensive.

The beach, however, is completely free. Walking from city sights to sandy surf never fails to make me smile.

Sporty types dig and smash their way to beach volleyball victory, friends sit and laze on the stony sands, while savvier folk keep walking to avoid the myriad of beach sellers flogging towels, braids, drinks and massages every few minutes.

Fit bodies pump iron by the pier on the outdoor gym, and pricier restaurants and beach bars spill over with people spending money, but it’s worth splashing out a little more for that view.

We all love how each area of the city feels so different. Flashy, edgy, beautiful, boho, just keep walking and you’ll stumble across somewhere you’ll love.

We walk the length and breath of Barcelona, Gaudi spotting where we can. We snap La Pedrera from the street, before falling completely in love with Casa Batllo. Stained glass, mosaic, sumptuous textures, quirky balconies and more skyward sculptures. It’s colourful yet classy. But it’s expensive to go inside.

Basic entry costs €43 (£37) or it’s €53 (£45) for everything (including queue skipping, which is very important for teenagers and tired parents alike). If you’re organised, you can save money by booking ahead online. But as we’re not, we decide not to spend over £150 for an hour and split up. I pay for the ‘gold’ (queue jumping) entry for me and take Poppy, as delightfully, under 13s are free.

She loves how every room objectifies some kind of animal, and the interactive audio visual tour which brings everything to life. “It’s the craftiest building I’ve ever seen,” she proclaims.

Park Guell is another must-see, but tickets are likely to sell out on the day, so it’s worth getting organised (€10/£8.50 for adults; €7/£6 for children aged 7-12; free for kids under 7 years). Families can spend hours inside – we take a picnic and spend the day among extroverted parakeets, squawking and squealing as they zoom from the palm trees, vying for everyone’s attention.

Inside, it’s another mind-blowing Gaudi phenomenon. Bougainvillea and wisteria thread themselves around the undulating stone walls, with greenery sprouting from cobblestone-like top hats.

Visitors rest on mosaic benches, beneath which lies an underworld of picturesque pillars. Look up to linger on punched out domes, circles of colourful art created from the teeniest of tiny shards. Every corner you turn, stony staircase you step down or winding ramp you climb, there is something new to see. Tourists queue desperately for snaps next to the mosaic iguana, but there is art literally everywhere you look.

Barcelona is full of art you can immerse yourself in. As we pack our bags for the plane ride home, the girls decide the best bit was La Sagrada Familia – and vow to return in 2026, when the building is scheduled to finally be complete.

How to plan your trip

Vueling flies to Barcelona from Birmingham, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, and Manchester, with prices starting from £38.

For an even foodier version of Barcelona, try this ‘gorgeous’ Basque city — flights start from as little as £45 return

San Sebastian and Santa Clara Island at sunset

When it comes to culture, nightlife and beaches, Barcelona ticks all of those boxes.

But in 2023 alone, more than 12 million people holidayed in the Catalan capital – and the Sagrada Familia is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in  Spain .

If you’re looking for a similar cultural experience without the crowds, the Basque town of Donostia/ San Sebastián is a sure-fire way to have a super foodie holiday for slightly less.

Nestled in the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain ’s mountainous Basque country, San Sebastián is known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, world-famous restaurants and historic old town – much like Barcelona.

Ondarreta beach in San Sebastian

Termed ‘gorgeous’ by adorning visitors in one Reddit thread , San Sebastián has earned its stripes, but it’s often overshadowed by the likes of Spanish tourism giants Madrid, Valenica and Seville.

It’s also just over an hour away from the larger, more industrial port city of Bilbao, famous for the curvy Guggenheim Museum and looming hills.

Things to do in San Sebastián

If you’re in search of a foodie long weekend away, then San Sebastián has everything you could ask for. The most popular dishes here are comprised of fish, including baked spider crab, hake cheeks in green sauce, and hake koxkera.

WIN VIP tickets to Pub In The Park worth £110 each!

Tom Kerridge’s Pub in the Park returns to Chiswick, Reigate and St Albans for 2024 – and we’ve got five pairs of VIP tickets to give away, worth up to £110 each.

Win tickets to summer's ultimate foodie festival (Picture: Pub In The Park)

The much-loved food and music festival celebrates everything there is to love about the glorious British pub: delicious food, award-winning chefs , epic live music, delicious drinks but above all else, a fantastic time with friends and family. Van Morrison, Busted, McFly, Paloma Faith, Sam Ryder, Gabrielle and Olly Murs have all been confirmed to play across the four weekends, with even more acts still to be announced!

To find out more and for your chance to win the ultimate summer day out, click here . You have until  midnight 15 May  to enter, so sign up soon! Full T&Cs apply, see here .

The local pintxos (not dissimilar to tapas, but often spiked with a tooth pick) are also popular, with dishes including stuffed peppers, tortilla de patatas, and croquettes.

If you’d like to experience the best local places, you can even book yourself onto a Pintxos Tour in the Old Town – available through the likes of TripAdvisor.

For San Sebastián’s answer to Barcelona’s (undoubtedly more crowded) sandy beaches, there’s the likes of La Concha Beach, Ondarreta Beach, and Zurriola Beach, all featuring stunning blue waters.

Meanwhile, Monte Urgill overlooks the ocean, and reaches an impressive 123 metres at its peak. Converted into a military fortress in the 12 th century, its walls were attacked throughout the years – including by France, the UK and Portugal.

Peine del Viento is a classic snapshot of San Sebastián, a modern iron sculpture designed by Eduardo Chillida and embedded into the rocks by the sea shore.

And, to learn more about Basque history, visit the San Telmo Museoa, a converted monastery that now operates as a museum, presenting items from various periods in Basque history.

How to get to San Sebastián

While there isn’t a direct flight from London to San Sebastián, the closest airport is Bilbao.

Flights from London Gatwick Airport to the Basque city take 2 hours, and are available via Vueling for as little as £45 return.

Typical Pintxos (Tapas) of San Sebastian, Basque country, Spain

From there, San Sebastián is just over one hour by car, or 1 hour and 11 minutes on the train.

From Manchester, you can take a flight to Barcelona El-Prat Airport, which takes 2 hours and 25 minutes, and transfer for a flight to San Sebastián Airport. This is slightly more costly though, coming in around the £120 mark for a return journey.

When to visit San Sebastián

If you’re in search of sunshine, then the summer is undoubtedly the optimum time of year to visit San Sebastián.

In June, temperatures can reach 21C, whilst in July and August the mercury can swoop up to 23C and 24C respectively.

If you want to avoid the crowds though, there’s always the possibility of some winter sun.
