Wisconsin Experience Bus Trip

WEBT logo

APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, MARCH 8TH!

What is WEBT?

The Wisconsin Experience Bus Tour, or WEBT, is a week-long journey through the state of Wisconsin, meant for students like you! On this tour, UW students get to experience some of the greatest sights Wisconsin has to offer, learn from its diverse communities, and get a glimpse of the inner workings of its organizations. Previous stops of the tour have included the Milwaukee school of excellence, Islamic society mosque, Pagel’s Ponderosa, and more!

Since it’s beginning in 2014, WEBT embodies the Wisconsin Experience – UW-Madison’s vision for the total student experience combining learning in and out of the classroom – by finding new viewpoints and settings, engaging students in deep reflection, and meeting with the local WI community. It is an adventure, taking students to new sights everyday, from urban centers to the great outdoors. It is also fully-funded, meaning it comes at no cost to the students participating! Held after the end of the Spring semester, this year’s trip runs from May 13th-17th, 2024 .

Working with the department of CfLI, WEBT fosters leadership skills and involvement in both on and off campus life. Students learn straight from the leaders in Wisconsin, and in the spirit of discourse and fun, forge bonds with like-minded peers.  Apply by March 8th, 2024 at 11:59pm, to be a part of this unforgettable experience!

Help Others Learn to Ride the Bus

Many seniors do not use the Madison Metro buses because they haven’t had the opportunity to learn the bus system. RSVP’s Bus Buddy Program pairs seasoned bus riders with learners, and the results have been somewhat magical. Once seniors have the confidence to travel around the city via bus, their world expands. They have the freedom to go to senior centers, shopping, and entertainment. They can plan a fun outing with friends rather than stay confined to their home.

Experienced Bus Riders: Volunteer to Share your Knowledge

If you are a seasoned bus rider, you can teach others how to ride the bus in Madison as a Bus Buddy volunteer. You will be matched with a learner and travel with them for several rides until they are comfortable traveling on their own. You can also be a part of Bus Buddy tours to fun Madison locations. For more information, contact Jan Karst at 608-441-7891 or [email protected] .

Learners: Expand your World via the Bus

Don’t let a lack of transportation keep you from enjoying all Madison has to offer. Let a Bus Buddy help you learn to use the city bus. RSVP Bus Buddy volunteers will accompany you on your first few bus trips to help you learn the bus system and routes, as well as how to request assistance (large print schedules, ramps, seating, etc.). If you would like to have a Bus Buddy help you navigate the bus system, contact Jan Karst at 608-441-7891 or [email protected] . There is no cost to participate.

Bus Buddy Tours

You can also combine learning to use the bus with a fun outing by joining a free Bus Buddy Tour. Bus Buddy Coordinators lead group tours that include instructions on how to use the bus and a visit to a local attraction. You’ll have fun, learn the bus system, and meet other learners. The Bus Buddy program will be following all COVID-19 safety protocols including wearing a mask and social distancing.

2023 Bus Buddy Tours Info

Buzzed into RSVP Bus Buddy Program

“Many of these people were scared to get on a bus.  I had one woman who told me just being able to get on the bus and go out to East Towne was like going to the State Fair.  So, this was total independence for her.”

Articulated electric buses coming to campus this summer

Photo of an articulated bus parked on the side of a road in front of a tall building on a sunny day.

You may have already spotted the shiny new buses winding their way through campus and the streets of Madison. Sightings will become more common, and you may even get a chance to take a ride as the new buses begin serving UW–Madison campus routes later this summer.

The impressive 60-foot articulated vehicles are longer than regular buses, with two sections connected by an accordion-like structure to maneuver around corners. They are part of the City of Madison’s all-electric fleet , which will serve the city’s new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes .

The new buses are expected to become fully operational on campus circulator routes beginning in fall 2024.

Transportation Services, in partnership with UW–Madison and the City of Madison, has contributed to matching efforts to secure federal funding for the new buses.

Photo of a group of people seated inside the articulated section of an articulated bus.

What is new about the articulated buses?

The new buses are fully electric, zero-emission vehicles. They will recharge at stations located at the Madison Metro bus depot. Additional recharging stations will be located throughout the city.

A regenerative braking system also recharges the batteries during operation by reclaiming the bus’s kinetic energy when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator.

According to the manufacturer , a zero-emission bus can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 135 metric tons – equivalent to the emissions produced by a 40-foot clean-diesel bus each year.

Being battery-operated, the electric buses also run more quietly than traditional buses.

Photo of female-presenting student in a mobility device stationed at a self-securement area in a Madison Metro Transit bus.

Improved ADA accommodations

The buses are kneeling buses with wide doors and ramps for passengers with mobility devices. There will be two areas to accommodate wheelchairs, including a new self-service wheelchair securement space.

More elbow room

According to Mick Rusch of Madison Metro Transit, the new buses can comfortably carry up to 120 passengers — approximately 40 more passengers than standard city buses.

The additional capacity is expected to alleviate strain on campus routes by reducing instances of drivers bypassing people waiting at stops because the bus is too full.

What about the hairpin turn?

Transportation Services is working closely with UW campus partners and Madison Metro to ensure the larger buses can safely navigate campus roadways. On a recent test drive, the driver successfully maneuvered around Route 80’s tight corners — including the hairpin turn on Observatory Drive.

Photo of the front end of an articulated bus taken from the perspective of the rear section as the bus turns a sharp corner.

More information coming soon!

Details regarding bicycle transport, accessibility and tips for campus bus riders will be shared throughout the summer. Also follow Madison Metro Transit for updates .
