India Tours & Holidays

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is . Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilisations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practising Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioural standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilisations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernisation and globalisation. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Many shops are open between 9 am and 7 pm, Monday through Saturday, though hours can vary at bazaars. Most shops are closed on Sunday.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervour of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of coloured powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolour Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colourful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colourful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejewelled females take the chance to let their hair down.

Is tipping customary in India?

While travelling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travellers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my mobile while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your mobile phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

India’s unit of currency is the rupee:

  • Cup of tea = INR 7-10
  • Small bottle of beer = INR 150-350
  • Meal at a local restaurant (thali, masala dosa or similar) = INR 100-200
  • Meal in a tourist restaurant = INR 350-600

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travellers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travellers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What is ATM access like in India?

ATMs are widespread across India in both cities and smaller towns. Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro are the most commonly accepted cards, but of those Visa and Mastercard are more likely to have success. The daily withdrawal limit differs from bank to bank.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travellers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is India accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in India

What you decide to pack and wear in India will depend on where you are and what time of year it is. The weather across India usually follows the monsoon cycle, so it’s quite easy to plan what to pack when it comes to rain, but temperatures will vary quite a bit from the north to the south.

How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?

Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

How will I be travelling around India?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in India, you may find yourself travelling by Jeeps.

Safari through jungles and national parks aboard a jeep, which is ideal for conquering the difficult terrain and offers supreme wildlife viewing opportunities.

Cruising the waterways of India is a revealing, inspiring experience. Whether it’s the iconic Ganges or peaceful Kerala backwaters, seeing India from the water is a must.

Travelling by train is one of the great experiences of India. It's a system which looks like chaos, but it works - and well.

Use the efficient metro to get around the sights and suburbs of Delhi.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

With walks, wildlife spotting and adventure sports nearby, staying in a jungle resort is the perfect way to see another side of India.

From ex-royal palaces to historic hill stations and converted forts, India is full of heritage properties that have been turned into comfortable accommodation with an old-world touch.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organising amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

India Tours

How to describe India? A profusion of colour, chaos, sights, sounds and smells that will assault every sense on every level.

Such a rich cultural heritage spans several centuries and takes it influences from its many rulers: Rajput, Mughal. English and Portuguese layered with multiple religions, traditional beliefs and customs, music, dance, architecture and food all combined to make a destination unlike any other. If you want to immerse yourself in local culture, travel in luxury staying in outrageously opulent palaces, drive deep into a national Park in search of the Tiger, or enjoy a serene cruise through the Backwaters of Kerala on a converted rice barge, World Journeys can tailor the perfect Indian experience for you.

Old Delhi The walled city of Old Delhi pulses with energy and colour. The hustle and bustle of thronged bazaars is laced by a maze of narrow lanes which twist and turn between tall, leaning houses. With its intricate streets, elegant mosques, forts, monuments, and bazaars that sell a variety of goods, Old Delhi speaks volumes about its Mughal past.

Agra – The Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal is truly a vision to behold as the last golden rays of light shimmer off its lacy white marble, showcasing what is, perhaps, the most perfect architectural monument in the world.  It is often said that Taj Mahal changes its colours every minute depending upon the angle of sunrays, and is best seen either by sunrise or sunset. Sunrise, however, is the best time to photograph this magnificent monument under mild sunlight.

Jaipur The picturesque capital of Rajasthan and awash in pink, the colour associated with hospitality and Rajput culture. Beautiful displays of architecture attract visitors including the Palace of the Winds and the Amber Fort.  Shopping in the colourful bazaars for handlooms and trinkets is great fun with friendly locals always welcoming!

Kerala  The state of Kerala has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline and known for beautiful palm-lined beaches. Soak up the flavour of quite a different India with Portuguese history of Kochi, the verdant hill stations of Munnar, and cruise the tranquil backwaters of Kerala.

Darjeeling A town in the state of West Bengal, Darjeeling is famous for its stunning green slopes scattered with tea plantations.  Once a summer resort for the British Raj elite, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, or “Toy Train,” completed in 1881.

The best time to visit India is November to April when the weather is most comfortable. There is also a plethora of festivals during this time to add to your travelling experience.

The summer can be oppressive, hot and humid making sightseeing difficult in most places with the possible exception of the highlands.

Staff experiences

India had featured in my personal top ten places to visit ever since I was a child. I blame Rudyard Kipling of course – he painted glorious kaleidoscopic pictures in my mind of thick jungles, soaring palaces and beautiful people with shining eyes and wide smiles, adorned in shimmering saris every colour of the rainbow. I was therefore beside myself when I finally had the opportunity to experience it all for myself. The reality of this huge and populous country both delighted and overwhelmed me but thanks to Mr Kipling, I was seriously predisposed to fall in love with the whole experience.

From the chaotic markets in Delhi to the inevitable traffic jam as we waited for a sacred cow to cross the road, from the ethereal play of light across the Taj Mahal at sunrise to the collision of colour, scent and sound of local bazaars, India never failed to impress me. We were lucky to travel through India in the lap of luxury staying in palace accommodation which made the journey particularly enjoyable. Many were private homes of India’s Maharajahs, the Rambagh Palace in particular was home to generations of royals for nearly two centuries before becoming the residence of the Maharajah of Jaipur from 1925 to 1957. The Rambagh Palace is feted as a jewel in the crown of all authentic Indian palaces and has rightfully earned its place amongst the most luxurious properties in the world.

After a memorable week exploring Rajasthan’s Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur we headed south to Kochi (Cochin) and I felt like I had arrived into a different country! As I wandered barefoot along a beautiful beach with palm trees swaying gently in a soft sea breeze I reflected on the differences to North India. A slower pace of life in the tropical warmth is evident; men wearing loosely wrapped sarongs called mundu’s and women in their ever-vibrant saris laugh and chat as they shop or wander through the market. Cochin’s famed Chinese fishing nets line the water’s edge and rock gently backwards and forwards like oversized ‘praying mantis’. The fishermen are only too happy to give you a lesson in the primordial art of fishing and will also try to sell you some fish or lobster ‘very cheap’. I was completely fascinated by the South’s laid back way of life – the locals are so friendly and the beach resorts relaxing and full of charm!

If you want a healthy, rejuvenating holiday away from it all, with a bit of yoga on the beach, followed by an Ayurvedic treatment and a delicious seafood dinner then Southern India is most definitely for you!

Language India has a number of official languages including: Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali, Kashmiri, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu – and English is widely spoken

Why we love it India has so many faces it really does have something for every traveller. The extravagance of the Maharajahs combined with the complex tapestry of its colonial past has resulted in some truly glorious architecture with huge aesthetic appeal – all begging to be explored. You can almost see shy eyes peeping out from behind latticed windows in the Palace of the Winds in Jaipur, soak in the tangible feelings of devotion in every inch of the Taj Mahal and wonder at the surreal angles and planes of the Jantar Mantar Observatory. It is easy to step back in time by joining a kettuvallam cruise on peaceful Kerala backwaters or leap into the future in the mighty metropolis of Mumbai. Explore the origins of yoga and Ayurveda or pull on your boots as you search for the elusive tiger in any one of a number of national parks throughout the country. Foodies will be well content a range of culinary experiences and of course trainspotters will delight in the 65,000 kms of railway of one of the largest rail systems in the world. India – what’s not to love?

Weather The most comfortable months for travellers over most of the country are October to March. The cooler hill stations are delightful through the early summer months of April – June. India is generally very hot and humid through the main summer months of July – September.

Social customs & quirks The Indians are a very warm, generous and hospitable race. They are also quite curious so expect to be asked lots of questions about yourself! If entering an Indian’s home, please remember to remove your shoes and appreciate that religious beliefs may well dictate certain behaviours. If you adopt a modest approach to your dress, speech and actions you will pretty much guarantee no major social gaffes.

Festivals & events India is renowned for its festivals and celebrations – each one a vibrant and colourful occasion. It should be possible to enjoy at least one festival during your time in India, regardless of the month! Diwali and the Pushkar Camel Fair are two of the most famous festivals celebrated in November each year. National holidays include Independence Day on August 15th and Ghandi’s birthday on October 2nd.

We took our teens to Africa and cherished every moment. From the instant we got off the plane until the day we left we were so well looked after with enormous warmth and hospitality. The kids became immersed in the overall experience and couldn’t wait for the next day’s adventure. A family experience that will stay in our hearts and minds long after our return.

The service from African Travel Specialists, especially all the individuals on the ground, was exceptional. Meeting the mountain gorillas was the most exhilarating moment of my life. Together with the bountiful game, especially the big cats in the great migration in the Masai Mara my whole journey was simply perfect.

We had a brilliant holiday that was meticulously planned and executed thanks to the wealth of knowledge and expertise demonstrated by the African Travel Specialists team (division of The Travel Specialists). We had exceptional service and guidance throughout Africa. We were captivated by the open spaces of the Serengeti, the geological uniqueness of Ngorongoro Crater, and of course the breadth of wildlife. Thank you for delivering an exceptional African experience.

Australian citizens must have a passport valid for at least six months following their return home. Tourist visas are required for Australian citizens. If you are not an Australian citizen, please contact the embassy of your country or Indian embassy to be sure you obtain the proper documentation.

India is a vibrant country with bustling cities and towns, and it can often be overwhelming. However, it is generally safe for tourists. As with travel in any foreign country, it is important to be vigilant and use common sense. Do not wander around at night in town, be careful when shopping, and place high value items in a safe if leaving them at your hotel. Precautions like these and a little common sense will mean you can spend more time relaxing on your holiday.

  • Shorts/skirts
  • Long trousers/slacks
  • More formal attire for your stay at prestigious city hotels or on one of the luxury trains
  • Underwear and socks
  • Swimming costume
  • Cover-up (for women visiting temples/religious sites)
  • Light rain gear
  • Personal toiletries (basic amenities supplied by most establishments)
  • Moisturizing cream and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent e.g., Tabard, Rid, Jungle Juice
  • Basic medical kit (aspirins, plasters, Immodium, antiseptic & antihistamine cream etc.)
  • Electricity converter/plug adapter
  • Visas, tickets, passports, money etc

Spirituality is at the core of life in India, so be respectful of the different customs, especially when visiting religious sites such as mosques, temples and churches. Do not wear shorts/revealing clothes, women may be asked to cover their heads, and leather goods (including camera cases, belts & handbags) may be prohibited.

The currency of India is Rupee (Rs). One rupee is equal to 100 paise. Notes come in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 rupees. Rupees in large numbers may not be brought out of India. UK Pounds / US dollars are easy to exchange at the cashier’s desk in the hotels for which you will require the passport.

Major credit cards are gaining acceptance in India, the most common are American Express, Visa and Mastercard. These cards can be used at most hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. Local markets and roadside vendors generally do not accept the cards. It is recommended not to rely on any one form of exchange when visiting India. You should carry with you a combination of cash, traveller’s cheques and credit card/s.

Avoid tap water and roadside fruit juice centres. Drink only bottled water, and check the bottle is sealed.

Immunization against COVID-19, Cholera, Typhoid, Malaria and Hepatitis is recommended for travel to India. However, we strongly recommend checking with your GP regarding your personal needs.

Jan-Mar1

January to March

North India experiences warm days and cool nights, whilst the south offers a sunny getaway. It is also a great time for tiger safaris as there is less foliage to hide the wildlife.

Nepal experiences pleasant weather during the day but temperatures dip significantly at night. There is also a high concentration of wildlife during this time, and it is the perfect time to see Chitwan and Bardiya National Park.

The perfect season for a beach getaway, expect warm days and very little rain with monsoon season well and truly over. Enjoy low humidity and great visibility for diving and snorkelling.

This is a peak period for Sri Lanka, with fine weather in the south and west making it a good time to visit. Days are sunny and dry, perfect for sightseeing. February and March see the celebration of Independence Day and Maha Sivarathri.

Apr-Jun1

April – June

A great time for wildlife sightings as in areas with little water they gather around waterholes making them easier to spot. For keen hikers, the foothills of the Himalayas are also cooling down around this time making this a great time for treks.

Spring has sprung! This is one of the best times to visit Bhutan as flowers are in bloom, valleys are green and lush and trekking season is in full swing.

April is a popular month to travel the eastern and northern regions, as the monsoon begins to arrive in the south. It is a great time to visit the Cultural Triangle or enjoy a beach holiday on the eastern coast.

Jul-Sep

July – September

An ideal time to visit Leh and Ladakh, whilst the monsoon rains arrive in the rest of India. Towards mid-September, the rain abates, and this is an ideal time for cruising on the Ganges as the water level is high.

Arrive in time for Kandy’s legendary festivities celebrating Esala Perahera, a 10-day Buddhist celebration. Weather is best in the north and east of the country, and it is usually the month to witness “The Gathering” of elephants at Minneriya National Park.

Oct-Dec

October – December

The rains end in the north and the peak season begins. Whilst occasional showers persist in the south, a lush landscape emerges. The suffocating heat abates, making perfect conditions to visit for events such as Diwali and the Pushkar Camel Fair.

The monsoon disperses and warm weather blesses Nepal and makes for fantastic trekking conditions. Days are pleasant and clear, and the lush landscapes are perfect for photographers.

The peak time to travel, Bhutan boasts mild temperatures and several festivals during this period. Admire the breathtaking landscape set against clear skies and venture into the mountains during this peak trekking season.

The north-east monsoon begins, and weather becomes unpredictable, meaning there is a chance of rainfall wherever you are. However, if you don’t mind a little rain, enjoy hot, dry weather around the Cultural Triangle.

Maddy the guide was excellent. The trip was great, although could have done with a day less in Varanasi and a day extra in Agra, but all in all would highly recommend it. It's full on - if it's your first time in India (or even if not!) prepare to be tired, dirty, but blown away and amazing at the same time.

India\'s Golden Triangle Tour

India's Golden Triangle

I took part in the Golden Triangle tour, as a solo female. Leave your preconceived ideas at home, you won't find them here. The trip took in some great locations and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. Be prepared for humidity, heat and organised chaos. Before choosing a group tour remember you will be with strangers, although you will make friends, and as such they don't want/need to know the intimate details of your life... there is such a thing as TMI! Please read the trip notes and be aware of customs, especially tipping and clothing... and remember that your behaviour choices impact/reflect on the other group members

We had such a great tour! Communication with Aahil (organiser) was great with everything organised perfectly and we were really well looked after by our driver and all the guides. We were two young women travelling together and we felt confident with no problems. We had an amazing time sightseeing and travelling around Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi and would recommend this tour company to anyone interested. Thanks so much!

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip around the Golden Triangle. Our driver Ajay Soni was incredible, nothing was too much for him. His knowledge of the areas we were traveling through was very impressive. His best characteristic was his extreme patience with everything that was going on around him. We were also super impressed by our Jaipur Guide Krishan his calmness and his gentle demeanor was so well expressed that we felt totally comfortable in his presence. I would definitely recommend that you ask for them both when you come to visit this amazing country. Thank you Tourradar for an overall amazing experience.

India's Top Selling Golden Triangle India Tour w/ Meals and Sunrise Taj Mahal

Just returned (2.4.2024) from a great week in India on the Golden Triangle tour. Booked through tourrada using Swastik india Journeys. Couldn't fault anything - hotels were good guides were knowledgeable and our driver Kan Singh was fantastic for the 5 days of our trip. Nothing was too much trouble for him and I would highly recommend him to others needing a patient flexible and skilful driver. And for what we paid outstanding value!

Taj Mahal, Tiger and Pink City Tour

Taj Mahal, Tiger and Pink City

The tour allows you to see lot of India in short time and gives you a great start to the country. The itinerary was very varied. Our driver was always happy, cheerful as well as professional. All the hotels were nice with a great variety of breakfast included. For me the trip was fantastic everything was extremely well organised and was the perfect mix of cultural immersion, nature and other activities. Overall very very happy.

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

Our Kathmandu visit was action packed. We visited many historical sites in and around the city. We also had a Mt. Everest flight see. Our guide, Navaraj Shrestha, was punctual, knowledgeable, and informative. He and the very competent driver managed to find convenient drop off and pick up points to visit monuments. Raj has a good sense of humor and was patient. We had a wonderful time and hope to return for a longer visit. Freddy & Jim Powell

Colorful India with Taj Mahal & Rajasthan

Good trip that could have been better. Provider failed to provide basic details. I felt that I had to chase down the answers. (before trip I asked for list of hotels; pushed to get taxi from airport arranged) Then on the trip only the general itinerary from the web page was provided. Destinations were good. Hotels were good. Driver was very good. Some guides were better than others. Failure to disclose that each day had a shopping trip was unacceptable. Guides were also invested in the shopping trips that made us feel that they were less there on our behalf. We lost valuable vacation time with each shopping stop. Stops for lunch was mediocre at best and were prearranged. The costs at the lunch stops were much more than other meals on our three week trip. Food was bland and expensive.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

The tour was wonderful overall. The guides were all extremely knowledgeable and they and the drivers were very accommodating. The staff/tour operators were also perfectly responsive in answering all my questions before the tour (and which helped my confidence that I would be in good hands as I chose the tour only after finding tourradar/WTX randomly from a Google search online) as well as perfectly communicative with me during the tour so that I always knew who would be picking me up and when with the drivers’ contact info. always provided, etc. The only complaint I would have was I didn’t care for the frequent inclusion of stops at various shops in the itinerary as I often felt pressure from the shopkeepers to buy some of their items. While I didn’t mind seeing some of their merchandise I would have preferred simply observing that with no pressure to buy anything (unless I asked to) and even though they would typically say there would be no pressure I felt this frequently. In general though the tour was excellent and I was extremely happy with my experience with WTX.

Premium India in Depth Tour

Premium India in Depth

Intrepid Premium India in Depth (November 13 - 25) Mumbai - Delhi Excellent tour leader along with very good local informative guides. 3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring. Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).

What people love about India Tours

Very informative,a bit of a challenge ,had a great time.
Although I LOVED everything about this trip, I have to say that the experience was 10 times enhanced by our amazing CEO, Manvendra. He went above and beyond and truly made this the trip of a lifetime

Testimonials.

Parvez Khan of Indian Journey is a talented tour organizer and thoughtful human being. Parvez arranged a five-person, 24-day trip that included Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi, and Kerala that was utterly delightful and seamless. Despite his smiling presence and calm demeanor, I knew he worked hard behind the scenes to handle every detail to make sure everything went smoothly.

Two couples and long time friends booked a trip starting in Goa, driving to Hampi, then flying to Madurai. We again had a driver and explored world heritage sites from Kancheepuram to the backwaters of Kerala. Hotels were excellent and importantly so were our driver who were experienced and spoke good English. Our agent was always available by phone and always helpful the few times needed. Trip could not have been better. Recommend without reservation.

From 2014 to 2018 I’ve done 3 tour in India Rajasthan, South India, Varanasi, Amritsar, and I’m going to have the fourth. I like India and I’m strictly joint with this country. I went in contact with Parvez and Indian Journey in a wonderful period I was in India to adopt my daughter and since then Parvez-Bahi was for me not only the best travel agent ever known but over all he was a brother an angel who protected me and my family and friends, in India.

We used Indian Journey this month for a Golden Triangle itinerary. Without a doubt, every driver, guide, and representative were top notch and immediately available via text, phone, or Whataspp (preferred).

Not once did we feel out of touch nor left questioning our itinerary. The guides were able to be a bit flexible with personal goals and priorities.

Excellent staff, prompt communication, flexibility, and guides. Just beware of the hard sell at the Cottage Industries mandatory handicraft/carpet shops.

Our third trip with Indian Journey was as memorable as ever. We have previously used Parvez (INDIAN JOURNEY) for touring Rajasthan and then a year later Amritsar, Shimla & Manali. All hotel bookings were good , Pawan our Driver was superb (we had him for 15 days in this last road trip). I have yet to come across a more decent and polite travel organisation in India, where the emphasis is on service and well being of the customer with very good prices.

This trip we did this time was Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and finally Udaipur. We stayed 2 nights at each location.

I would have no hesitation to recommend (and I have already sent a number of my friends in the UK Parvez’s details) INDIAN JOURNEY for organizing your next holiday.

If you want home away from home than you should get in touch with Indian Journey Mr Parvez Khan. I have used other service providers in India on my previous visits but no one came close to Indian Journey when it comes to your comfort and service. You will be treated as a family member of Indian Journey.

I have visited lots of places and the best thing is that as soon as you reach your Hotel to check in you will receive a call from Indian Journey to ask if the Hotel is to your liking and if not they arrange to transfer you to another Hotel with fulfills your needs and wants. I have visited India more than five times with young family and solo. There is no comparison in service and comfort with Indian Journey. Don’t just take my word for it, try it and you will not be disappointed.

Thank you Indian Journey (Mr Parvez Khan) for taking care of me with just one phone call. Hope to see you again on my next visit.

Things to do in australia.

Once you are clear to travel, there are tons of things to do in this unique, spectacular country. Island hopping  When you go through Australia tour packages, make sure you select one that includes Whitsunday Islands. For those who seek the best sailing experience on the world's best waters, Queensland's Whitsunday Islands are a great place to start. For those looking for an authentic Australian experience, taking a boat tour around the Great Barrier Reef is one of the greatest ways to see the island's natural splendour. Luxurious Train Ride Across Australia One of the world's biggest rail rides, this 2,979-kilometre (1,851-mile) journey will take you from Darwin to Adelaide throughout the nation (or vice versa). You'll witness some of Australia's most diverse and breathtaking landscapes as you travel through tropical greens, the red desert sands of the Red Centre, and the rocky mountains of the Flinders Ranges. The journey also includes stops in Katherine and Alice Springs, where you'll get an inside look at Australia's rich indigenous culture. Indulge in the company of Kangaroos A kangaroo sighting on a white sand beach is a quintessential Australian experience. Lucky Bay in Western Australia's Cape Le Grand National Park is one of the most popular spots for roos to relax and enjoy the sun. The Esperance beach with its white sand and blue ocean looks lovely, and is the best location to relax with a few playful roos. Don't miss out on the Kangaroos on your Australia tour.  Check out the Kimberley coast! Cruise ships are a great opportunity to view the Kimberley, one of the world's last pure wilderness places. With its two billion years of natural history on display, the Kimberley coast of Western Australia has several exciting cruise options that allow visitors to see it all in a new and interesting way. It is possible to see the rocky shores, isolated beaches, red-hued canyons and waterfalls, and intricate river systems at close range, all while enjoying fine dining and comfortable accommodations. Find the Tasmanian Devil The Tasmanian devil is a secretive marsupial carnivore and the world's largest one still alive. At Devils@Cradle, a Tasmanian wildlife sanctuary located at the gateway to Cradle Mountain National Park, you can get up close and personal with these vanishing creatures. Corals, an astounding 1,600 tropical fish species, dugongs, giant clams, dolphins, sharks, turtles, and rays, are just some amazing marine life that can be found in the area. If you'd rather keep out of the water, you can hop on the boats with glass bottoms to see the barrier reef.  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park :  Australia's most famous natural landmark, Uluru (previously Ayers Rock), may be found amid the Red Centre. On your Australia trip, see the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park jointly maintained by Parks Australia and the traditional proprietors, the Anangu people, centred around the spectacular red monolith.  Sydney Harbour Bridge : The Sydney Harbour Bridge, together with the Sydney Opera House, is one of the most recognisable structures in Australia. The world's largest steel arch bridge, affectionately referred to as "the Coat Hanger," was built in New Jersey. Sydney's Opera House opened 40 years later, in 1932. Blue Mountains National Park : This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a popular day excursion from Sydney and a great place to go hiking. This magnificent park protects over 664,000 acres of wilderness and gets its name from the blue haze of the eucalyptus trees. Working in Market - India

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link

See how to work in India, one of Tourism Australia's key markets, and learn key insights into the various travel distribution channels.

Distribution system

The Indian travel distribution system is highly fragmented (even more in a post-Covid world) and varied across the country. Whilst there are a few national retail agencies, most agents are small, family-owned independent businesses, and contribute a small percentage of business to Australia. Indian consumers are researching and booking their trips using a combination of traditional travel agencies and online options. Whilst with increased digitisation, we are seeing a gradual shift in bookings through Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), retail agencies still handle most of the outbound travel from India.

Wholesalers/ Large Agents

  • The traditional wholesale model has not developed in the Indian travel industry. There are a few larger travel agents such as Thomas Cook, SOTC, Kesari, Veena World, MakeMyTrip, PickYourTrail, etc. who have developed their own distribution network through smaller independent agents.
  • These are often referred to as franchisees or preferred sales agents. Some agents and Online Travel Agents OTAs such as MakeMyTrip and Yatra. have also adopted a model of home-based consultants who prefer to work from home.
  • The major operators having a pan-India presence are Thomas Cook, SOTC, Kesari Tours, Veena World, MakeMyTrip, and PickYourTrail. Most Indian travel companies operate across all segments of travel, including group tours, Free Independent Travel (FIT), business events (MICE) and luxury.
  • There are a few traditional B2B wholesalers that are gaining support from the smaller retail agents, these include: Rez Live, Otilla, GTA, and Travel Boutique Online (TBO).

Retail Agents

  • The distribution of travel products in India is fragmented with only a few national operators. Most agencies are small, independent, family-owned businesses.
  • Competition between the larger travel agencies is fierce, with aggressive marketing and tactical promotions in print and digital media. Promotions include cash discounts, early bird discounts, hotel upgrades, free holidays on cruises or to other countries/cities, ‘holiday now, pay later’ schemes, cash back schemes and offers for a companion or child to travel for free.
  • Most large retail agents brochure and market their own programs, working closely with the inbound tour operators (ITOs). Large travel agents have also started contracting directly with hotels and attractions in Europe, South Africa, and USA.
  • Large travel agencies take reservations from consumers through their own retail networks as well as from smaller agencies.
  • Travel agents use Global Distribution Systems (GDS) such as Galileo, Amadeus, and GTA, to reduce response time and provide instant confirmations to clients.
  • Despite the increase in the online travel segment, traditional retail agencies have not yet moved to this platform for bookings and continue to use the medium to generate leads. Conversion happens through their sales network.
  • As the Indian outbound market grows, more consumers are using the internet to research and purchase their holidays.
  • Online travel agencies (OTAs) are now receiving a large portion of visits to travel sites, with the major players being Makemytrip.com, Goibibo.com (part of MakeMyTrip), Cleartrip, EaseMyTrip, and Pickyourtrail.com. Other international sites such as Expedia, Tripadvisor, Hotels.com, Agoda, Booking.com and Trivago are also gaining popularity.
  • There has been an increase in online bookings for air tickets for international flights with the improved reach and use of the internet, convenience of booking from home and the removal of credit card fees when booking directly with an OTA or the airline’s website.
  • Whilst the online purchase of holiday products is on the rise, most of the OTAs have now established agencies or call centres as an alternate distribution channel.
  • Traditional and online distribution systems will therefore continue to co-exist over the next few years as the Indian outbound market grows and matures.

Aussie Specialists

  • The Aussie Specialist Program (ASP) is the primary platform for Tourism Australia to train and develop frontline travel sellers to best sell Australia.
  • There are over 5000 qualified Aussie Specialists in Germany. This includes 39 ‘Premier Aussie Specialists’, recognised with Premier status for their extensive knowledge of the destination, commitment to selling Australia and ongoing learning via the Aussie Specialist Program.

Inbound Tour Operators

  • Key ITOs for India are Australian Outback Travel (AOT), Australian Tours Management (ATM), Australia & Beyond, Travel Maestro, Smart Travels, Time Travel, Great Aussie Travel & Tours, Pacific Vacations, Aussie Tour Planner, K2K Inbound, Turtle Down Under, Xplore Australia, Australia & Worldwide, and others.
  • India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is well poised to be the third largest economy in the world by 2027.
  • Young demography (average age 29 years), rising aspirations and increased disposable income will drive Indian economy and outbound travel in the future.
  • Shift from saving to splurging economy, young India is travelling at a much younger age.
  • Increased spend on dining, shopping and travel amongst the aspirational middle class and millennials.
  • Young Indians will travel FIT, book their travel on their own, look for value deals, indulge in self-drive, adventure, and food and drinks, immerse in local culture and will travel for major events (sports, music).
  • There’s an increased preference for inclusive, sustainable & conscious travel.

Distribution

  • The total trip spend on leisure travel to Australia by Indians was AUD$935 million in 2023, growing by 21% compared to 2022, while the average trip spend was AUD$1,609, dropping by 19% compared to 2022 (Source: IVS 2023).
  • Online travel agencies such as MakeMyTrip.com, Goibibo.com, Pickyourtrail.com, EaseMyTrip, and Cleartrip have been increasing market share in the online space. They are expanding rapidly, and an emerging trend is their move into traditional retail stores, in addition to expanding products and services online.
  • There has been a drastic growth in online sales of tour packages.
  • Self-drive holidays, luxury and signature holiday experiences and destinations such as South Australia (Adelaide and Kangaroo Island), Northern Territory (Ayers Rock), Australian Capital Territory (Canberra), Western Australia (Perth and surrounds) and Tasmania are new products being developed in the market, with support from Aussie Specialist agents.

Planning and purchasing travel

  • Consumers are booking trips using a combination of traditional distribution operators and online options. Most consumers will book through a retail travel agent rather than directly with product.
  • Whilst India has traditionally been a late booking market and consumers have a short lead time for booking holidays, ranging from four to six weeks on an average, we are also seeing an emerging trend of ultra long-term planning of holidays, especially amongst those who are celebrating a milestone or tend to travel during a particular time of the year.
  • Indian travellers prefer to plan itineraries and pre-book many activities prior to travel, rather than on-the-ground.
  • The use of social media for researching travel is higher than some other markets suggesting it would leverage well amongst Indian consumers.

Special interest

  • There is a segment of the India leisure market, particularly amongst those who are upwardly mobile, looking for luxury travel experiences. Individual, boutique travel agencies who are members of luxury travel groups such as Pure Life Experiences and Serandipians (formerly known as Traveller Made), specializing in custom, high end journeys in Australia. Key Destination Management Companies (DMC) for this segment are The Tailor, Southern World, Alquemie, Southern Crossings and Touring Treasures, to name a few.
  • The Signature Experiences of Australia program packages and promotes Australia’s outstanding tourism experiences within a variety of niche areas and special interest categories. Signature Experiences of Australia currently comprises wineries, luxury lodges, golf courses, walks, Indigenous experiences, fishing adventures and wildlife. In each case, Tourism Australia has partnered with select industry collectives that have a compelling marketing proposition and share a common goal and vision. An increasing number of boutique retail travel advisers such as members of Pure Life Experiences and Serandipians by Traveller Made partners in market are catering to travellers looking for authentic and uniquely Australian experiences in these spaces.

Planning a visit to market

Top tips for sales calls.

  • Sales calls should focus on agents in the key cities of Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru, and where possible the secondary cities of Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad.
  • The best time for sales calls is January to February and July to September, outside of key booking periods.
  • For more general information on sales calls and planning a visit to market, please see Tourism Australia’s  'Tourism Export Toolkit' .
