AODC

The cruise ship sails early in the morning (8.15 am) towards either Poros – Hydra – Aegina or Hydra – Aegina – Poros. Keep in mind that the itinerary and the duration of stay on each island cannot change and are not customizable.

Highlights of the Athens Day Cruise to 3 Majestic Islands Aegina, Hydra, Poros

Description of the cruise from Athens to Aegina, Hydra and Poros islands

athens_one_day_cruise_booking

The cruise will start early in the morning. You will be received at the Port of Piraeus by the hostess and a warm welcome from the crew of the ship and you can either enjoy a soft drink at the lounge or stay at the open deck to watch the departure.

Soon after the departure, you will need to assemble to the main lounge where you will be given all the information you will need for the islands and your stay on the ship during the cruise.

The green island of Poros

poros island near athens

Two hours after the departure the cruise will take you to the island of Poros , which is the smallest of the islands you will be visiting, but also the greenest, with the most interesting coastline.

Poros is separated from the mainland of the Peloponnese Peninsula by a narrow strait that creates a truly unique landscape. The leisure time in Poros is approximately 50 minutes and you have ample time to walk down its small streets and take as many pictures as you like.

Hydra, the island with no cars

hydra island near athens

Continuing the cruise, you will be arriving at the port of Hydra , almost an hour and 15 minutes later. We recommend you to be on the deck to watch the arrival because the island of Hydra is amphitheatrically shaped and offers a unique view when entering the port.

The landscape of the island of Hydra is dramatic and is adorned by the traditional mansions and stone houses that reflect the richness of the island and its old citizens. You will notice right away that there are no cars on the island. Indeed, no vehicles are allowed, so you can only walk, take a bicycle, a donkey, or hire a water taxi to visit one of the more remote villages of the island!

Hydra is the ideal island to stroll; beautifully paved streets, quite many stairs, and a truly captivating seaside promenade. This is probably the island you will adore due to its uniqueness. You will be staying for an hour and a half in Hydra and when you return on the ship you will have a nicely prepared lunch that will give you a full idea of what the Greek cuisine tastes like.

Aegina, the largest of the Saronic islands

the greek island Aegina

Two hours later you will be arriving at Aegina, where you can choose what you want to do. Aegina is the largest of the islands and has a number of interesting sites to explore.

Classical tour on Aegina (optional)

There is a guided bus tour on the island that takes you to the Temple of Athena Aphaia , one of the best-preserved temples in Greece, which is built on a lovely hill and offers spectacular views to the entire island, as well as the Saronic Gulf and even Piraeus. On the way back to Aegina’s port you will make a short stop to the Byzantine Church of St Nectarius.

Panoramic tour on Aegina (optional)

The second option you have is the Panoramic Tour that will take you across the island to get an overview of the natural landscape. You will not get to see the archaeological site with this tour though. The tour will end with a stop by the seaside where you can enjoy a small meal with Greek meze dishes and ouzo!

NOTE. You can buy the tickets for both optional shore trips on board so that you do not need to worry about it.

When you return to the cruise ship, do not think that the cruise is over. The best is yet to come! The crew of the ship along with dancers and singers will dress in their original Greek costumes and offer you a Greek Traditional Folk Show on board, to animate you during the return to the Port of Piraeus. The main goal is to feel rejuvenated with this cruise, but also entertained!

The cruise from Athens to Poros, Hydra, and Aegina is by far the most popular cruise in Greece: elegant boats, delicious food, live music + dance, and a sea of happy faces from all over the world on a wonderful voyage to three Greek islands. Let’s sail together! You only need to bring your camera… we’ll bring a good mood!

FULL DAY CRUISE

Upon arrival to Piraeus, you will receive a warm welcome from our officers and hostesses who will assist you boarding one of our luxurious cruise ships. You proceed to either to the Main Lounge, where our live orchestra will put you in the right mood with their international music repertoire, or keep on to the spacious open decks where you can enjoy the wonderful views as the ship leaves the port. Our showmanm Jeannot will entertain you throughout the day with his imaginative surprises. Poros At 8.15 am, the ship sails for three of the wonderful, beautiful Saronic Islands. The visiting order of the islands is either Poros, then Hydra the Aegina, or Aegina, Poros they Hydra. The visiting order does not change the duration of the stay on any of the islands. Shortly after departure our guides and hostesses will invite you to assemble in one of the lounges in order to give you information concerning the ship, the curse program and the islands. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you many have. Our trained staff will ensure you have a fantastic day. Within two hours you arrive in Poros, the smallest of the three islands. Poros is separated from Pelopennese by a narrow strait, and the ship affords the best views of the enchanting Poros Town. You will have approximately 50 minutes to take in this lovely village. Hydra Island On leaving Poros, lunch is served. As we sail towards Hydra, the remaining guests can relax in the ship's lounge or enjoy the sun and beautiful panoramic view from one of our spacious decks. An hour and fifteen minutes later, we enter the port of Hydra, whose amphitheatre shape once served as a safe shelter for Saronic Pirates. From the decks, you will be able to admire the very special architecture and dramatic landscapes of this island, whose old traditional stone houses and mansions silently stand witness to a long and turbulent history. As soon as you disembark, the discovery starts - the small narrow stone-paved streets waiting to be explored on foot or by the island's traditional "vehicle" - the saddled donkey. There are captivating walks along the old seaside promenade, crystal clear waters, radiant traditional fine craft shops - the beauty of Hydra will never be forgotten. You will have about an hour and thirty minutes to enjoy the unique charms of Hydra. As you sail on, Apostolos and his dancers will teach you the art of Greek dancing. Aegina island Time passes quickly and after a two-hour trip, we arrive to our last port of call, the island of Aegina. Aegina is the largest of the three islands. Apart from its harbour, there are a number of sites to discover on the island and therefore we propose 3 optional tours. There is a Guided Bus Tour of the island, starting with a visit to the Temple of Aphaia which is the best preserved temple in Greece and one of the three temples forming the famous Sacred Triangle of Greek antiquity. Built on top of a wooded hill, it offers the most magnificent view over the island, the Saronic Gulf, Piraeus and Salamina Island. Our guide will tell you the fascinating story of the intriguing history of this beautiful site and then from there take you for a short visit to the Church of Saint Nectarios, where you can enjoy quiet moments contemplation and admiration of its beautiful Byzantine architecture. The drive back to Aegina Port will give you time relax and appreciate the exquisite peaceful nature of the island. The second tour on Aegina is the Panoramic Bus Tour. This gives you the opportunity to drive across the entire island, without visiting the archeological site. It allows you to admire the beauty of its nature, the islands medieval capital of Paleohora, the Church of Saint Nectarios and the pistachio groves, among other wondrous sites. The tour ends with a stop by the seaside where you can relax and enjoy a glass of ouzo along with a choice of irresistible Greek "Mezedes" (appetisers). Tickets for these highly recommended optional excursions can be purchased on board. The third choice is to stay in Aegina and enjoy a walk or horse-carriage ride around the town or relax in one of the harbor's charming waterfront coffee shops. Greek Dancing on board And if you think that the day ends here, you are mistaken! The highlight of your cruise still awaits! A traditional Greek folk show with singers and dancers in original costumes from all of Greece who, together with our officers, hostesses and the ever amusing Jeannot will entertain you up to the final moment as the ship docks in Piraeus. Finally, we will wish you a warm farewell and while looking forward to seeing you again on one of our cruises!

We worked with Anastasia at Antelope travel, who was amazing. She arranged a four hour tour in Athens and then 3 nights in Mykonos and 3 nights in Santorini. It was a truly amazing trip. All the guides hired by the travel agency (Athens and Delos day trip) were knowledgeable and friendly. The transfers and transportation was timely and efficient. The hotel in Mykonos (Myconian Imperial) was a real treasure.....we loved it. I rarely work with travel agents because I think I can do it on my own, but this trip was truly marvelous because of Anastasia's efforts. We want to thank her for all her help!!

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. One of the main reasons why Hydra is a popular destination is its proximity to Athens, as a ferry from Athens to Hydra, will get you to the beautiful island in just 2 hours. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway! Having been a filming location of “A girl in black” and “Boy on a dolphin” movies, as well as a holiday destination for Leonard Cohen, Hydra stands out for its classy beauty! In Hydra island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their feet, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens.

Poros is a little island in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, close to Aegina and Agistri. Thanks to its proximity to Athens -just 1-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port- it is a popular destination, especially for weekend getaways from the capital. Perched on the slopes a hill, overlooking the vast Aegean sea and the opposite Galatas, Poros Town is the center of the island’s activity. What’s more, in the picturesque Poros Town, you’ll find a great selection of Poros hotels, shops, cafes, restaurants, and taverns! Its proximity to the rest of the Saronic islands also makes Poros island Greece the perfect base for island hopping in Greece! So, your best bet is to combine your holidays in Poros with getaways to Aegina, Agistri, and Hydra, for the ultimate Saronic experience!

Aegina is an idyllic island very close to Athens, thus a very popular destination for quick getaways. Belonging to the Saronic group of islands, Aegina picturesque has many archaeological monuments, picturesque villages, and beautiful beaches! The center of the island is Aegina Town, the picturesque capital of Aegina. Boasting elegant Neoclassical buildings, narrow alleys and a bustling seafront promenade, Aegina Town is perfect for summer strolls! Island Excursions

Hydra walking tour.

One of the most inspirational activities you can enjoy while visiting Hydra is the Hydra Walking Tour. The walk begins at the Merchant Marine Academy, dating from the 18th century, and the statue of ‘Miaoulis’ representing the island’s modern history and strong presence in the War of Independence (1821). There’s the option for a donkey ride (the island’s traditional mode of transportation) before visiting a traditional patisserie (1930) and enjoying its famous macaroons. You’ll delve into local history with a stop at the local flag and its symbolism and visit the square where scenes from a ‘James Bond’ film were shot, as well as square dedicated to the Prime Ministers of Greece originating from Hydra.

Other highlights include ‘Rafalia’, one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, housed in a renovated 19th century neoclassical building, the Monastery of the Assumption of Mary, as well as the Ecclesiastical Museum and the cannons of the island, with a view to the small island where the oldest shipwreck in the world (2,200 BC) was discovered in 1975. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Swimming Tour

Imagine the fun of a short speedboat ride to the crystal waters of a nearby island for a swim. Just a short distance from Aegina, you will have the opportunity to enjoy swimming in the clear sea surrounding either Agistri or Moni, the two picturesque islands close to Aegina (depending on weather conditions). Agistri is just 12 minutes away and Moni only a 7-minute speedboat ride from the port. These beautiful beaches are ideal for swimming surrounded by exquisite natural beauty.

You can swim in the crystal clear waters and enjoy the sandy beaches, next to peacocks and you may even see a deer in the distance. You’ll also have plenty of time to relax at the beach on comfortable lounge chairs, under umbrellas. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Panoramic Tour

The Panoramic Tour of Aegina leaves lasting impressions. The beauty and quietness of the countryside shed light on the inland character of the island. Enjoy a drive across the entire island (without visiting the archaeological site) admiring the beauty of its nature. Among the memorable sights are the famous Aegina pistachio groves, as well as the island’s medieval capital of Paleohora and the Saint Nektarios Monastery.

For a gastronomic delight, the final stop at a local taverna gives you a true taste of the island’s local cuisine. The tour lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

Aegina Classical Tour

The Classical Tour of Aegina offers an inspiring experience into the modern history, culture and ancient character of the island, as well as a drive through the countryside where pistachio trees line both sides of the road. Representative of the island’s modern history is the Kapodistrian building, where Ioannis Kapodistrias resided as the first Governor of Greece. A visit to the Temple of Afaia is an unforgettable excursion. The temple is the focal point of the area of the sanctuary, founded in ancient Aegina to commemorate the Minoan deity Afaia, daughter of Zeus and Carme. The temple is in the Dorian style and is considered by many to be the model the Parthenon is Athens.

An impressive highlight of the tour is the Monastery of St. Nektarios, built between 1904-1910 by the Bishop of Pentapolis, Nektarios. Nektarios lived in the Monastery until he died in 1920. In 1961 he was declared a Saint. The church has two tall bell towers and four rows of windows, which all have red bows for a capstone. The Monastery is a convent where presently 14 nuns reside. The memory of the Saint is celebrated on November 9th. The tour lasts about 50 minutes and can be combined with other tours in a combo-tour package.

You can either purchase the tour on board, as it is not included in the ticket price, or contact us to help you choose the best package.

Best of Greece

Overall, our 8-day trip to Greece in September of 2023 was fantastic! Our trip started in Athens where we had excellent accommodations (including breakfast) and a great tour of the Acropolis, the museum, and the Temple of Poseidon. We arrived in Mykonos on Day 3 to find our hotel had moved to a different location on the island. The company accommodated us with a vehicle as the hotel was in a completely different part of the island. Thankfully someone in our group was willing to drive! The hotel was really nice and located within walking distance of shops/dining. Our final part of the trip was in Santorini. The tours in Santorini were amazing (afternoon/dinner/sunset cruise on a catamaran and a bus tour of the island with wine tasting)! However, the hotel accommodations we less than desirable in Santorini. Our room was very old and rundown. All transfers to/from the airports/ferries were excellent, as well! I would highly recommend utilizing Tourratdar for your upcoming holiday! They were accommodating and communicative throughout the entire process. Personally, in hindsight, we would've planned for 1 additional day in Athens and 1 additional day in Santorini.

Greek tour was absolutely perfect! Wanderful Holidays is the best agency I have ever worked with. Their level of communication is truly 5 stars. We were able to communicate with Erica and Alberto at any moment via WhatsApp and this made us feel extremely safe. We went to Athens, Santorini, Crete and we enjoyed the high level of service that we received in all cities. The food was amazing, transportation was always on time, and the overall price for 9 days is unmatched! I will definitely be booking with Wanderful Holidays for our next trip!

This is a great tour if you want you accommodation and transport handled but want to be in control of everything else. The only thing that would have made it better was if I'd been with a group of other people doing the tour rather than completely on my own (just so there were familiar faces around).

Since this was the first trip booked through Wingbuddy, it was unknown how reliable they are, but coming out of this experience, I would say that we are very pleased. All the transfers were handled seamlessly. The drivers were always prompt, friendly and helpful. The accommodations were just fine. We came to realize that this company oversees your trip in the background to ensure that everything runs smoothly for you. We recommend them to others and would book again with Wingbuddy.

What people love about Greek Islands Tours from Athens

Mia our leader gets 10/10! We were lucky to have her as our guide. She made everything easy and we saw so much in a short time. This has been a memorable trip. It's my first Intrepid tour. I will definitely be doing more and will recommend them to my friends!! Thanks Intrepid
Outstanding Service! Excellent communication throughout the process, from booking to final checkout. Even in the single instance when weather did not cooperate and forced to cancel a sailing activity, the team helped finding and booking a good alternative. Great hotels and highly professional local services. Perfect if you are looking for a fun, stress-free, fully organized vacation. Beats the crazy self-planning/booking/coordination hassle many times over.
Everything was perfect and well planed out since the start, just stick to the group and your schedule. Met many wonderful people. Dilimar was the best, so helpful and attentive all days of the trip. Thank you ❤️ A

Athens Island Cruise – Hydra Poros And Egina Day Cruise From Athens

Looking for the best Athens island cruise? The Hydra Poros And Egina Day Cruise From Athens is for you. Read more about Greek island tours from Athens.

Olympic Cruises Three Island day trip from Athens

Greek Island Tours from Athens

Many people that visit Athens, do so with limited time. Spending two or three days in the city, they tend to see the main attractions such as the Parthenon, Archaeological Museum , and Ancient Agora . They often include a day trip out to the wider area as well.

One such popular  day trip from Athens , is the Olympic Cruises Three Islands trip. This cruise takes in the nearby islands of Hydra, Poros, and Aegina all of which are in the Saronic Gulf.

Note: Olympic Cruises changed their name to Evermore Cruises a little while after I took the Hydra Poros Aegina tour.

This Greek island cruise from Athens offers a neat introduction to island life, architecture, history, and culture. You also get to enjoy great food, music, and unmatched views along the way!

Check out this Athens day cruise to 3 islands here: Full-day Tour of the Saronic Islands from Athens

Hydra Poros And Egina Day Cruise From Athens

The Olympic Cruises Three Islands Tour departs from Marina Flisvos. This is about 6km from central Athens, and is classed as a ‘mega-yacht' port.

You can reach the marina from central Athens by a combination of metro and tram, and Olympic Cruises (now Evermore) also provide transfer services. I found that the easiest way was by taxi. From central Athens, the cost is about 10 Euros.

Athens Island Cruise

The boat, is the Kassandra Delphinus, and can carry a maximum of 344 people. We were nowhere near that capacity though, as our day trip from Athens with Olympic Cruises took place in the quieter month of November.

We were perhaps 50 people on-board, including the crew. This made it quite a relaxed atmosphere, and there were plenty of places to sit when the boat departed at 08.00.

Leaving port with Olympic Cruises. Taking a day cruise from Athens to visit three neighbouring islands.

This small cruise ship acts solely as a tourist vessel for exploring these 3 Saronic Islands . If you want to do more Greek island hopping, look up ferry timetables on Ferryhopper .

Day cruises from Athens, Greece

Anyone that knows me, will already be aware that I am not a terrific sailor. Despite having sailed from Panama to Colombia , and Malta to Sicily, I pretty much just have to look at a boat and my stomach turns!

OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture! I'm happy to say though, that I didn't get sick at any point of the journey, despite some pretty rough seas towards the end.

Pro-tip – Consider taking some travel sickness medication if you are not used to the sea.

Olympic Cruises Three Islands Tour Review

Once seated, the guide gave us a quick introduction to the islands, and the intriguing history behind them. Due to our position on the boat though, it was pretty difficult to hear.

I would suggest sitting a little closer to the bar area on the outdoor deck just in case. (And there is nothing wrong with sitting closer to the bar!).

An hour into the cruise, musicians started playing some well known Greek songs. This was timed perfectly for navigating close to some interesting looking small islands and cliffs, with the Greek music lending extra atmosphere.

Hydra Island near Athens

First port of call on our day trip from Athens with Olympic Cruises, was the island of Hydra . A walking tour was available here for an additional fee.

I would suggest though that if money is tight, this walking tour is not essential. A  little prior research will enable you to see all the highlights of the town in an informed manner.

A view of Hydra from the Olympic Cruises boat

Hydra reminded me somewhat of Santorini , a place I had visited just the weekend before.

The main aspect of this island though, is that there are no vehicles allowed, apart from the three ‘official' vehicles. (These are the ambulance, fire truck, and rubbish truck!). This means that the centuries old tradition of moving goods around through the narrow streets by donkey remains.

Donkeys on the Greek island of Hydra

Sightseeing in Hydra

We spent an hour on the island of Hydra, before going back to the boat. Once we were under-way again, it was time for the included lunch, which was a buffet lunch style affair.

A large plate of roast chicken, Greek salad, and potatoes was just what I needed! I didn't say no to the pie for dessert either!

Poros Island near Athens

The next stop, was at the island of Poros. In my mind, there was little point in including this island on the itinerary, and a Two Island Cruise may have been better.

Stopping for just half an hour allowed us to climb to the clock-tower, take a few photos, and get back down again. Personally, I would have preferred to use that time on the previous island instead of just such a short visit on this one.

Aegina Island

Back onto the boat, and the Athens one day cruise continued on to the island of Aegina. The main point of interest here, is the Temple of Aphaia .

This is reachable by another guided tour at an additional cost, or you could arrange a taxi. My advice, is to go for the guided bus tour, as this is the easiest option, and you get the benefit of a guide.

The Temple of Aphaia on Aegina. Said to be one of the Sacred Triangle Temples.

Sacred Triangle in Greece

This is a temple I hadn't heard of before. It is also said to be part of the Sacred Triangle. (The Sacred Triangle is formed between the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion , and the Parthenon in Athens ).

All these temples were constructed at the same period in history. Were they deliberately positioned to form the shape of a triangle? If so, why?

Of course, if you plot any three points on a map, they make a triangle! Interesting, nonetheless.

We then would have had an extra hour on the island for ourselves. As the weather was bad however, the Captain made the decision to return earlier. Wise decision Sir! The sea was choppy enough even then!

Final Thoughts on the Olympic Cruises Three Island Tour

Although the day at times seemed a little rushed, the Olympic Cruise Three Island day trip is ideal for anyone spending just a brief time in Athens or Greece.

In one day, you get to experience a luxury yacht, music, fine food, and three Greek islands. On our way back, we got the view of a great sunset as well! Keep in mind, that any guided tours you take on the cruise will come at an additional cost.

Conclusion – A good tour for people seeking to maximise their Greek experience in a short amount of vacation time.

3 Island Tour Athens Tips

Useful Info – This was a full on day, with an early start. Lunch is provided for the trip, but drinks and other snacks are additional purchases you will need to make at the bar. I would suggest bringing a day-bag with some snacks and water. I would also recommend you bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock.

1 thought on “Athens Island Cruise – Hydra Poros And Egina Day Cruise From Athens”

the day cruise is always a suggestion of mine to anyone with a few days more in Athens. Personally I’d pick one island and spend the day there! I haven’t visited that temple in Aegina, but I know the place from a children’s book called Vagia’s Treasure. Saint Nektarios monastery is also pretty in Aegina especially in the springtime!

7 Best Island Day Trips From Athens, Greece

3 island tour from athens

  • Destinations
  • Greek Islands
  • News and Tips
  • Travel With Confidence

With so many islands to choose from, it’s often thought that to enjoy a Greek island experience one has to travel far from Athens by plane. This is not, however, necessarily true.

The Saronic Islands lie in the Aegean Sea, known as the Saronic Gulf, between Athens and the northeast coast of the Peloponnese. A cluster of smaller and lesser-known islands to the international tourist, they’re easily reached by ferry from the Port of Piraeus in sometimes less than an hour, making them perfect as a day trip or even weekend destination, and many Athenians have second homes there.

Once you’ve experienced the best things to see and do in Athens and the best food to try , come with me as I explore the Saronic Islands and more to showcase the best island day trips for you. Usually the best time to go is in the summer, yet despite the islands not being as touristy as other popular Greek islands, expect them to be busier at this time of year. For good weather that will allow you to take advantage of the variety of things to do, spring and fall are good, too.

If you’re considering a visit to any island that’s recommended for hiking, note that spring and fall are better times for your visit, and hikes on these islands can be quite strenuous. Always seek local advice before setting out.

Salamina, Attica, Greece.

We start with Salamis, the nearest island to Athens at just 12 miles away from the small Port of Perama, very near the main Athenian Port of Piraeus.

It’s often overlooked as a destination as it has a heavy shipbuilding industrial past, not a glitzy appeal — but it shouldn’t be. There are many nature walks to be had, and you’re bound to stumble across ancient antiquities, from the signposted monument of Kolones — a circular 4th-century stone funeral monument — to small stones with no indication of what they could be.

The fish market in Salamina, the island’s chief city, is an interesting place to witness local life, whereas the local Archaeological Museum — housed in a beautiful building that was the old elementary school — showcases Salamina’s historical past.

Although much of the island’s architecture has been replaced with new apartment blocks, the blue-framed, whitewashed house belonging to the famous Greek poet Angelos Sikelinos nestled by the sea is indicative of its past, and a great place to watch the sunset.

Pro Tip: Travel by car ferry (which operates every 15 minutes) from Perama on the mainland to Salamis. Journey time is 15 minutes.

Greek island Poros on sunny day.

Poros’s harbor is what will draw your eye initially to the island as you sail in. Poros Town is built amphitheatrically around the port — curved and rising from the ground up, surrounded by lush green pine forests.

The aesthetically pleasing neoclassical style buildings of the town are an attraction in themselves, as is the Clock Tower sitting atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and surrounding Saronic Gulf. It’s the local equivalent of Big Ben and a good place to take sunset pictures.

Despite its small size (19 square miles), Poros offers several small sandy beaches to relax on, but if history is your thing, you’ll appreciate the smattering of churches across the island, many with ancient frescos and relics, the most visited being the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigis — which also served as an orphanage to children born of men fighting the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Famed American novelist Henry Miller was moved upon seeing Poros when he visited in 1939, stating, “Coming into Poros gives the illusion of the deep dream. Suddenly the land converges on all sides and the boat is squeezed into a narrow strait from which there is no egress.” One could maintain that not much has changed since then.

Pro Tip: It takes a little longer to reach Poros — 2.5 hours by slow ferry from Port of Piraeus in Athens, or via hydrofoil in roughly an hour.

Aegina with traditional fishing boats.

From pebbly beaches — one at the fishing village of Souvala in the north of the island with thermal hot springs that help rheumatic and dermatological problems — to the 500 B.C. Doric Temple of Aphaia Athena which, along with the Parthenon of Athens and Temple of Apollo at Delphi, makes up part of the Holy Triangle of Antiquity, to the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Nektarios, one of the largest in the Balkan region, much awaits you when you come to the Saronic island of Aegina.

Greeks and foreign tourists alike come to Aegina for day trips and weekend breaks and its lack of all-inclusive resorts makes it a popular destination for relaxing, sightseeing, and drinking a coffee along the waterfront.

With ancient sites, relaxing coves, and picturesque seaside villages, Aegina is a good choice for an island day trip from Athens.

Pro Tip: Both slow and fast ferries depart for Aegina almost every hour, and the journey time is between 30 minutes and one hour depending on which one you take.

Agioi Anargiroi, Agistri island, Greece.

Aegina’s smaller neighbor, Agistri is only 10 minutes from its big sister, and despite the fact it’s only 5 square miles and has just over 1,100 permanent residents spread out across its four villages, Agistri makes a perfect quiet island day trip.

As you enter the Port of Skala, the small blue-domed church of Agioi Anargyroi sits at the harbor’s edge ready to welcome you — it’s the first thing you’ll notice about Agistri. Skala also has a clean, organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, making it a popular spot to hop off the ferry and spend the day relaxing before taking the evening ferry back to Athens.

If you’re keen to explore more of the island, the beaches are served by a small bus service that regularly circles around. Or walk along the coastal road to find a selection of tavernas and restaurants all serving fresh fish, plus cafes and beach bars.

Agistri’s allure is the wonderful natural surroundings of pine forests and views of the Peloponnese. For a quiet trip and a chance to spend time on the beach during a day away from the city, you can’t go wrong with this tiny Saronic island.

Pro Tip: There are regular connections from the Port of Piraeus in Athens with journey times of 1 to 2 hours depending on which ferry service you take.

Donkeys on Hydra island in Greece.

Known as the Jewel of the Saronics, Hydra is possibly one of the most popular islands to visit on a day trip from Athens. It’s famous for not allowing any motorized vehicles on the island — except the fire and refuse trucks.

It’s not so popular for its beaches, but there are plenty of good swimming platforms and rocks to swim from.

Its main pull is the upmarket harbor with several boutique shops and small hotels, plus a good selection of places to eat and drink. The harbor’s been rebuilt to resemble the architecture of its heyday in the 1800s when it was ruled by the Venetians, and you don’t need to have a vast knowledge of architecture to appreciate the uniqueness of the houses and mansions here.

Due to its relaxed vibe and the fact it’s so aesthetically pleasing, Hydra has attracted many artists, both Greek and international — the most famous being the late Leonard Cohen who bought a home there and penned “Bird on a Wire.”

For a sophisticated Greek island day trip, Hydra is definitely the one you should choose.

Pro Tip: High-speed services to Hydra operate from the Port of Piraeus, and there are about five a day with journey times of just under 2 hours.

Going to Spetses island, Greece.

With its elegant restored mansions dating to the Venetian era, Spetses has a distinctly vintage feel to it.

The main port of Dapia has several upmarket cafes and bars to relax in, or if it’s swimming you’re after, a visit to the secluded sandy beaches of Agia Marina or Agia Paraskevi is a must. Reach these beaches either by car or by taking the inter-island bus service.

Walking and hiking along the old paths that cut across the island side to side past old chapels and small settlements is another popular activity, especially in the spring and fall when the weather’s cooler.

Spetses is a perfect place for downtime, to come and relax and just be.

Pro Tip: The high-speed ferry from Piraeus takes about 3 hours and about five ferries run each day.

Ioulida on Kea island in Greece.

Lastly, we look at the Greek island of Kea. Though not strictly in the Saronic chain of islands, it is still possible to spend a day here.

Also called Tzia, the island is a Cycladic one with houses and churches and traditional farmhouses in earthy tones, not the blue and white of the other Cycladic islands.

Nature lovers will love it here as there are several rare plant species as well as wild birds and reptiles.

The capital is Ioulida, a place that bans cars, and the Medieval castle standing guard over the quaint village makes for an interesting visit.

Most of Kea’s beaches are sandy, small, and secluded, so you won‘t have to worry about overcrowding. Fans of walking and hiking will enjoy the inland paths through archaeological ruins such as the Stone Lion, which, according to mythology, was sent down by the jealous gods to ravage the beauty of the island.

Pro Tip: To get to Kea/Tzia, you take a one-hour ferry from the Port of Lavrion, located just over an hour from the center of Athens. For this reason, an overnight stay is well worth it on this beautiful, verdant island.

If you’re short on time, there is a One Day Cruise that allows you to take in three Greek islands — Hydra, Poros, and Aegina — in one day, and the price includes lunch on board plus Greek music.
