SIQUIJOR TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget

SIQUIJOR TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

“It’s safe here,” our tricycle driver shared proudly. “You can leave your luggage in the tricycle. No one’s gonna take it.”

That would have been comforting, except he added, “They’re afraid of the needle .”

And just like that, my friend Grace was overtaken by fear. LOL. By reputation, Siquijor is a land of witchcraft and black magic, something that my companion was awfully aware of. But I have traveled long enough to know that a place’s reputation doesn’t always match reality, a view I have explained thoroughly to my friend to blow her doubts away.

But five minutes into this trip, our trike driver filled her mind with images of mysticism. “It’s real,” he said. “I can even take you to a village here so you could meet one.” He was probably referring to the faith healers.

Any other day, I would have said yes as it is something that has always tickled my curiosity, but Grace was quick to steer the conversation away from the topic. “Let’s stick to the beaches!”

Ah beaches. Yes, like many other remote corners of the Philippines, Siquijor too is bursting with something equally magical — natural beauty. This travel guide will allow you to explore beachy side of the province, not much the witchy side. (Sorry if that’s what you’re after. LOL.) And to be honest, that’s probably the only sorcery you’re gonna need.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING SIQUIJOR

When the Spaniards first set foot in the island, they were captivated by fireflies swarming around molave trees, hence the nickname “Isla del Fuego” (Island of Fire). As one of the first provinces reached by the clutches of Spain, Siquijor has Roman Catholicism deeply rooted in their history and culture. In fact, most of the island’s manmade attractions are religious structures.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

In terms of land area and population, Siquijor is the third smallest province in the country. It’s so small, you can see most of its key tourist spots in one day or two, although we urge you to stay longer.

  • Language : Cebuano. English is widely understood.
  • Currency : Philippine peso (PhP). PhP100 = USD2, EUR 1.65, KRW 22000, JPY218
  • Mode of payment : Cash. There are a few ATMs in the island so if you’re coming from Dumaguete or Cebu, it would be more convenient to withdraw money before your visit.

WHERE TO STAY IN SIQUIJOR

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

If you’re strapped for cash, you’ll find several accommodations for less than P1000 a night, with some going as low as P300, especially at town centers and port area. However, note that many of them are basic fan rooms with barely any amenities.

But if you want more comfort, you can stay at a guest house. If you have more funds, staying at a beach-front resort would be ideal. The following are the top options on Agoda, ranked by reviews. Here are the top rated properties on Agoda.

How to get to siquijor.

Siquijor doesn’t have its own airport, but it is easily accessible from Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental. Access from ferry is also possible but it takes hours.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

MANILA TO SIQUIJOR

If you’re coming from Manila, you have to fly to Dumaguete or Cebu first. Between the two, Dumaguete is the faster, cheaper, and easier option.

  • Fly to Dumaguete City . Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air carry passengers from Manila to Dumaguete in about 1.5 hours. You can look for flights at Traveloka.com .
  • Take a tricycle to Dumaguete Sea Port (near the boulevard). Travel time: 15-30 minutes. Fare: P120-150.
  • Buy a ticket and board a ferry to Siquijor . Travel time: 1 hour. Fare: P136 to P360, depending on the destination port, class, and liner. Several shipping lines ply this route so you’re sure to find one every 2 hours. Options are fewer on Saturdays, though. You also have to pay the terminal fee, P25.

Note : The island has two main sea ports, though: one in Siquijor (the town) and the other in Larena. Choose the one near your resort or hotel.

CEBU TO SIQUIJOR

If you’re in Cebu or you want to visit Siquijor as part of your extended Cebu trip, here’s how to get there.

  • Make your way to Cebu South Terminal . If you’re coming from Mactan airport, board the myBus outside the domestic terminal to SM City. There’s a bus leaving the Mactan Airport every 30 minutes from 7am-11am, and every 20 minutes from 11am-9:30pm. Fare: P25. Then take a cab to the South Bus Terminal. Outside these hours, you may take a cab, Uber or Grab straight to the bus terminal. Fare is between P230-P300, depending on traffic.
  • Hop into the bus bound for Liloan (in Santander Municipality). Travel time: 4-5 hours. Fare: P162 (ordinary), P200 (air-conditioned).
  • Board the ferry bound for Sibulan (in Negros Oriental). Travel time: 20-25 minutes. Fare: P50 (ticket) + P10 Terminal Fee + P2 Municipal Fee.
  • At Sibulan Port, ride a jeepney or pedicab to Dumaguete City . Jeepney fare is P12. Pedicab is P10 per person.
  • Once in Dumaguete City, take a tricycle to Dumaguete Port . Fare: P10.

HOW TO GET AROUND SIQUIJOR

Upon disembarking at either Siquijor or Larena Port, you will be greeted by tricycle and multi-cab drivers, enticing you to get their services. These are legit. (At least most of them are.) Not only can they take you to your resort, they can also tour you around.

Transportation options are very limited in the island. If you can’t drive a motorcycle, you have two main choices:

  • Tricycle Tour : P1000-P1200 per tricycle. Up to 3 pax.
  • Multi-cab Tour : P1800 per vehicle. Can accommodate 15+ pax.

According to our trike driver, the following are also available, although we never really saw any rental places.

  • Van Tour : P2500 per vehicle
  • Motorcycle rental : P350 per vehicle

In our case, we began our tour right away and decided to just drop our luggage at the reception of our resort along the way. This way, we get to maximize our day.

The itinerary isn’t fixed. Although your guide/driver will have their recommendations, you also get to choose where you want to go. For example, Kagusuan Beach isn’t part of the usual tricycle route but our driver agreed to take us there at no extra cost.

If you enjoyed your first day tour, hire your guide-driver for your second day so he could pick you up at the resort.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SIQUIJOR

There are two main tours in Siquijor: Coastal Tour and Mountain Tour. The Coastal Tour will show you around the island, making stops at beaches and churches among others. The Mountain Tour will take you deeper inland to Cantabon Cave and Bandilaan Park.

To maximize your time, choose your stops well. Siquijor has a lot of wonderful spots to offer, but to be honest, there are some that can be a bit underwhelming. For example, the Old Balete Tree and Capilay Spring Park can feel like tourist traps at first glance and they pale in comparison to Aurora’s greater balete tree and Camiguin’s hot springs respectively. But here’s the thing: they are legit attractions among locals , who were the original patrons. Context. But feel free to skip them if you feel like you’re not into them. This way, you can have more time for other sites.

Coastal Tour (aka Land Tour)

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

  • Salagdoong Beach . Perhaps the most popular beach on the island. Great for cliff-jumping. Entrance fee: P30. Parking Fee: P40.
  • Kagusuan Beach . A short stretch of sand concealed in between rocks.
  • Cambugahay Falls . A small, three-tiered waterfall. Perfect for a quick freshwater dip and a mandatory Tarzan rope swing (jk, it’s not mandatory). Entrance Fee: P10. Unli-Swing: P20. Parking Fee: P20.
  • Lazi Church and Convent . More formally known as San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, a Baroque structure which was declared a National Cultural Treasure.
  • Siquijor Church . Aka St Francis de Assisi Church. Standing right next to the port.
  • Capilay Spring Park
  • Enchanted Balete Tree. Entrance fee: P10.
  • Paliton Beach
  • Guiwanon Spring Park

Mountain Tour

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

  • Cantabon Cave . Great for spelunking newbies. It’s not that challenging, but there are curious rock formations and refreshing pools inside. This was the highlight of our stay in Siquijor! Tour Fee: P500 for 3 pax, including guide fee and rental of helmet and flash lights.
  • Mt. Bandilaan Park . Perched atop a hill, offering a walking trail and a view of the province and nearby islands.

SAMPLE SIQUIJOR ITINERARY

Below is a sample overnight itinerary with cost breakdown for a group of three. You may pattern your own itinerary after this. Just adjust it according to your needs.

You can book a tricycle or multi-cab tour of the island as soon as you arrive in the island. If your resort is along the way, you may ask the driver to make a quick stop there to check in and leave your bags at the reception before continuing your tour.

If you’re a group of 3 and you have P1500 hotel budget, prepare to shell out P2600 .

Note that we also allotted P150-P200 per meal. That’s more than enough if you decide to eat at cheap eateries around town centers. (That’s what we did.)

Most travelers visit Siquijor as part of a bigger Negros Oriental-Siquijor journey, which also includes Dumaguete City, Apo Island, and sometimes Manjuyod Sandbar. We’ll be providing a sample itinerary for that soon so be sure to check back.

Solo Travel Guide to Siquijor, Philippines

Last Updated on April 27, 2023 by Tina

For most Filipinos, Siquijor is famous for stories of magic potions, sorcerers, and witchcraft. I guess this is the reason why not too many Filipinos explore this beautiful island. When I was there in January 2019, most of the tourists are foreigners. In the hostel that I stayed at, I was the only Filipino guest. And when I went back there a few weeks ago, it was still the same. Siquijor is still on my top 3 of my favorite islands in the Philippines. It has amazing sunsets, beautiful waterfalls, and white sand beaches with crystal clear waters. There’s something about Siquijor that makes you want to stay there forever. I originally wrote this post as a solo travel guide to Siquijor but I am updating this post as a guide for anyone planning to visit Siquijor, whether you’re going solo, or with someone else (like I did last time).

Located in the Central Visayas Region in the Philippines, Siquijor is the third smallest province in the country. The province can be explored in just one day. It is a small island midway between Visayas and Mindanao Islands. It is bounded on the north by the island of Cebu, Bohol to the northwest, Negros Island to the west, Camiguin to the east, and mainland Mindanao to the south. Facing its northern shores is Bohol Strait while at the southeast shores is the Mindanao Sea.

Best Months to Visit Siquijor

Siquijor has a tropical climate. Rainfall is significant in most months of the year. Its rainy season is from May to January with October being the wettest month. On average, the warmest month is May and the coolest month is January. April is the driest month. The best time to go to Siquijor is right after the rainy season, January because it won’t be too hot, there is not much rain and everything is green.

How To Get To Siquijor

Siquijor has its own airport but has no commercial operations yet. People who want to go to Siquijor normally take a flight from Manila to Dumaguete in Negros Oriental then take a ferry to Siquijor. Tagbilaran in Bohol could also be an option as there is a ferry to Larena, Siquijor from Tagbilaran. If you are in another country and would like to avoid Manila, you can fly to Cebu and take a ferry to Siquijor via Tagbilaran. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines (PAL) have daily flights to Dumaguete, Tagbilaran, and Cebu.

How to get to Siquijor from Manila via Dumaguete

From Manila, fly to Dumaguete via Cebu Pacific or PAL. Then from the airport, walk to the highway and hail a tricycle. Ask to be dropped off at Dumaguete Sea Port. (Fare is cheaper if you get the tricycle outside the airport. Based on my experience in 2019, tricycles inside charge Php 50 more than those outside. The highway is just a 2-minute walk.) At the port, buy a ticket and board a ferry to Siquijor. There are different shipping lines bound for Siquijor:

Ocean Jet is more expensive than the others but the tricycle driver recommended it and said it is safer (and faster). In case you are taking Ocean Jet, their ticketing office is outside the port about a 2-3 minute walk. The fare is Php 350 (~US$ 7) for the Tourist Class/Open Air and Php 580 (~US$ 11.60) for the Business Class. Their schedule for Dumaguete to Siquijor is as follows: 7:20, and 19:20. You can also book in advance online with Bookaway .

Montenegro Shipping Lines has daily trips from Dumaguete to Siquijor too. The regular fare is Php 234, the student fare is Php 187, and the senior citizen fare is Php 167. Their schedule for Dumaguete to Siquijor is as follows: 7:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 18:20.

How to get to Siquijor from Cebu via Tagbilaran

If you are traveling from Cebu, Ocean Jet has a connecting trip Cebu – Tagbilaran – Siquijor. The schedule is 13:00 for the Cebu to Tagbilaran trip and 15:20 for the Tagbilaran – Siquijor trip. The fare from Cebu to Tagbilaran is Php 800 (~US$ 16) for the Tourist Class/Open Air and Php 1200 (~US$ 24) for the Business Class. The fare from Tagbilaran to Siquijor is the same, Php 800 (~US$ 16) for the Tourist Class/Open Air and Php 1200 (~US$ 24) for the Business Class. You can book your Cebu to Siquijor trip in advance online with Bookaway .

If you’re traveling from Cebu, I highly recommend spending a few days in Bohol (where Tagbilaran is located) before going to Siquijor. Bohol is where you can see the smallest primate in the world- the Philippine Tarsier. The province is also home to the famous Chocolate Hills and has beautiful white sand beaches. If you have limited time, 2 or 3 days in Bohol is enough to explore the province. I’ll publish a travel guide for Bohol next time.

How to get to Siquijor from Tagbilaran

You can easily travel from Tagbilaran, Bohol to Siquijor and vice versa by ferry. Apekop and Ocean Jet have daily trips to Siquijor from Tagbilaran.

Ocean Jet has daily trips to Siquijor at 15:20. The fare from Tagbilaran to Siquijor is Php 800 (~US$ 16) for the Tourist Class/Open Air and Php 1200 (~US$ 24) for the Business Class. You can buy a ticket at the ticketing office of Ocean Jet near Tagbilaran Port. You can also book online through Bookaway or Klook .

Apekop is another company that has daily trips from Tagbilaran to Siquijor. I haven’t personally tried this but my roommate at the hostel was able to and she said it was fine. Their schedule is 10:00 and the fare is Php 750 (~US$ 15).

Mobile Signal and Internet Connection in Siquijor

Mobile signal is available in Siquijor but there are spots that have very weak or no signal at all. There is mobile data but in most areas the signal is intermittent. Most hotels and hostels have a free wifi connection. If you are planning to work online while in Siquijor, it is doable. You just have to find accommodation with really good wifi. I highly recommend Stella’z Guesthouse . We stayed there for 2 nights, and I worked while we were there. I also managed to attend a Zoom meeting, and the connection was good.

Getting Around Siquijor

There are several ways of getting around Siquijor. Public transport is not a good option as there are very limited trips available.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

  • Charter a tricycle- If like me you don’t know how to drive a motorbike and you are traveling alone, you can hire one of the tricycle drivers waiting outside the port. Tricycle fare from Larena port to San Juan (where most hostels and hotels are located) costs around Php 600 (~USD 12). The tricycle drivers also offer tours.
  • Hire a multi-cab or van- If you have a big group, hiring a van or multi-cab is the best option. It costs around Php 3000 (~60 USD). You can hire a van/multi-cab near the port.

Where to Stay in Siquijor

Siquijor is a small province with only six towns- Enrique Villanueva, Larena, Lazi, Maria, San Juan, and Siquijor. Siquijor is the provincial capital of Siquijor Island. It is where the Siquijor Port is located.

The main tourist area on the island is San Juan. It is where most hotels, hostels, bars, and famous restaurants are located although there are also hotels in other towns. Most tourists visiting Siquijor stay in San Juan. Paliton Beach, Tubod Marine Sanctuary, and Lugnason Falls are located in this town.

Lazi is where Cambugahay Falls, Lazi Convent, San Isidro Labrador Church, and the Century Old Balete Tree are located. Salagdoong Beach, with a platform where people can go cliff jumping, is located in the town of Maria.

Siquijor has a range of options for accommodations depending on your budget. From luxury hotels to backpacker’s hostels, Siquijor got you covered. You could do glamping on the island too.

Where to stay in San Juan, Siquijor

I stayed at Cliff Garden Hostel during my solo trip to Siquijor in 2019. It is not located in the central part of San Juan, where most hotels/hostels and restaurants are located. What I love there though is hanging out by the cliff every afternoon, watching the sunset. And at night when it is dark, you can see fireflies. A dorm bed costs Php 350 (~US$ 7) a night. Other hostels that are highly recommended by backpackers are Fable Hostel , Wonderland , Lazy Lizard , Tori’s Backpacker’s Paradise , and Love Shack .

During our trip to Siquijor recently, we stayed at Stella’z Guesthouse . I highly recommend this guesthouse. It has a good location- just a 5 to 10 minutes motorbike ride to the center of San Juan. It is near the beach. The room is clean and big and the bed is comfortable. The bathroom is wide and has a hot and cold shower. There is a big closet and a mini ref in the room. And as mentioned above, the internet connection is good. Lastly, the staff are very friendly and accommodating and the room is reasonably priced, maybe cheap even. To know more about this accommodation, check out my Stella’z Guesthouse review .

For fancy accommodation, a popular choice among tourists is Coco Grove Resort . It is a huge property along San Juan Beach and has a wide array of amenities such as a swimming pool, restaurant, and pool bars.

If you want to do glamping, check out Glamping Siquijor by the Beach .

Where to Stay in Lazi, Siquijor

If you’d like to experience living in a jungle, I highly recommend Jungle Hut Siquijor . It is a cute bamboo Airbnb cabin in Lazi located near the Enchanted River. It is a 10 to 15-minute walk to Cambugahay Falls.

Where to Eat in Siquijor

On my solo trip to Siquijor in 2019, for my first two nights I only ate at the restaurant of Cliff Garden Hostel because it was a bit far from the area where most restaurants are located. I don’t know how to drive a motorbike and there aren’t tricycles around the area. But on my third day, I met a Taiwanese girl at the hostel and she has a motorbike which she rented at Larena. Because of her, I was able to try Baha Bar and Monkey Business. These are the ones I have tried:

One of the most popular restaurants in Siquijor is the Baha Bar. It has a relaxed vibe and good food. There is also a live band playing. I have to warn you though that it can get very busy so even giving out your order takes time (because there aren’t waiters in sight). It also takes a long time for the food to arrive and the food is a bit pricey.

Triad Coffee Shop

Located at the top of a mountain in Larena, this coffee shop has an amazing view of the coastline. And their food is not that bad either.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

U.Story Guesthouse

U.Story is a resort with a restaurant located near the hostel where I stayed at, Cliff Garden Hostel . It has a zen atmosphere and the decoration is Balinese-inspired. The food is really good and reasonably priced. You can eat in the garden where you have a really nice view of the sea. The resort also has a lounge area that leads down to a stone staircase that runs into a swimming cove. Even though we only ate in the restaurant and are not booked in the guesthouse, we were allowed to hang out by the lounge area and swim at the cove.

Monkey Business

A must visit when you are in Siquijor. A nice place with really good food and drinks. The restaurant has a very chill vibe. They offer Asian and European cuisine.

Siquijor Tour Packages

There are two types of tour packages in Siquijor, the Mountain Tour and the Island Tour. If you have very limited time, I recommend skipping the Mountain Tour.

  • Mountain Tour – Mt. Bandilaan, Butterfly Sanctuary, Cantabon Cave, Triad View Park, Guiwanon Spring Park, and Lugnason Falls
  • Island Tour – St. Francis de Assisi Church, Old Enchanted Balete Tree,  Lazi Church and Convent, Cambugahay Falls, Salagdoong Beach Resort, Paliton Beach, and Capilay Spring Park

The standard rate for a tricycle day tour in Siquijor is Php 1500 (~USD 30). Toto Arvin is a DOT Accredited drive/tourguide. You can contact him at +639667651000.

Siquijor Tourist Attractions

Cambugahay falls.

One of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. It is a three-tiered waterfall with natural pools and clear waters that can be reached by going down the one hundred thirty-five stone steps. You can swing by the rope and jump over the water. There is no entrance fee to the waterfalls but there is a parking fee of Php 20 (~US$ 0.4).

Lugnason Falls

Another waterfall in Siquijor, this is a great spot for adrenaline junkies. They can climb the side of the falls and cliff jump from the top.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

Paliton Beach

This beach is claimed to be the island’s most beautiful beach and locals dubbed it as little Boracay of Siquijor. It has powdery white sand, clear turquoise waters, and tall coconut trees. I love this beach so much that when my guide noticed that I wasn’t enjoying the Mountain Tour he brought me to the beach again.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

St. Francis de Assisi Church

One of the old famous churches in Siquijor, it is a well-known landmark as it is just a hop away from the local port. In front of the church is a Welcome to Siquijor signage.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

Old Enchanted Balete Tree

A 400+-year-old Balete Tree, it is considered as the oldest and the biggest in the island of Siquijor. A natural spring flows underneath the tree to a man-made pool where fishes swim around. You can have a fish spa at the man-made pool. Entrance fee is Php 20 (~US$ 0.4).

Hapitanan Cafe and Restaurant

Many tourists drop by this place after visiting the Old Enchanted Balete Tree to do the broomstick challenge. There is no entrance fee here, but you can leave tip in the tip box.

Lazi Church and Convent

The San Isidro Labrador Church, also known as Lazi Church, is one of the oldest churches in the island. Known for its huge convent located across the church, it was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

Salagdoong Beach Resort

One of the most popular beaches in Siquijor, it has fine white sand and crystal blue waters. Another spot for adrenaline junkies, it has a 20 ft and 30 ft platform where one can go cliff jumping.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

As of April 8, 2023, Salagdoong Beach is temporarily closed. You can go there to take pictures, but you can not go cliff jumping or swim in the sea.

Capilay Spring Park

Situated in the middle of the town park, it is a natural cold spring pool where locals love to hang out.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

Mt. Bandilaan

It is the highest point of Siquijor Island at 632 meters above sea level. There is a viewing platform at the top and it takes about 20 minutes to climb the stairs from the parking area. Don’t expect too much though as high trees cover most of the view of the island.

Butterfly Sanctuary

Located close to the highest point on the island, this is a place where you can observe and get close to the butterflies. The entrance fee is Php 100 (~US$ 2).

Cantabon Cave

It is the most famous cave on the island. You need to hire a guide to explore the cave. Inside the cave runs a subterranean stream.

Guiwanon Spring Park

This is mainly a mangrove forest with elevated pathways made of wooden planks going to the open sea. At the end of the pathway looks like a bar/coffee shop. The bar is a good place to do sightseeing. There are also a few wooden houses on some trees that are for rent if you want to stay overnight.

Additional Tips When Visiting Siquijor

  • Don’t forget to bring sunblock. You’ll be staying under the sun for very long periods of time so better protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  • Insect repellent may come in handy too.
  • Philippine peso is the currency used on the island. Make sure you exchange your money to the local currency in big cities before going there to avoid having the problem of looking for money changers.
  • There are banks on the island where you can withdraw money but I suggest bringing enough cash before going just in case the machines are offline.
  • The island is very safe even for solo female travelers but as in any place, don’t leave your things especially your valuables unattended. There has been a reported theft incident in Cambugahay Falls.
  • If you are in Dumaguete and want to do a day trip to Siquijor, you can book a tour with Klook . You will be picked up from your accommodation in Dumaguete. Click on the link to find out more about the tour .

DIY Itinerary and Travel Guide: Siquijor on a Weekend

Sorcery. Potion. Magic. These are some of the words that were usually associated with Siquijor. Somehow offensive for the locals yet they already embraced it and made it a way to earn, through tourism. Despite these hearsays, Siquijor is one of my dream provinces to visit. When I moved to Cebu, I asked some workmates to join me on a weekend trip to the island province. But since most of them are hesitant to spend a night in the mystical island, I resorted to a solo trip, thus a Siquijor itinerary .

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

In an active group on Facebook, with members sharing do-it-yourself trips itineraries, I found two travelers visiting Siquijor same with my travel dates. We started a chat and met at Dumaguete port on an early Saturday morning.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

We didn’t want to strictly follow an itinerary but to spontaneously hop from one destination to another. The accommodation was not part of the planning stage that we indeed hopped from one resort to another just to secure a place for the night. Renting a motorcycle for 24 hours was more convenient for the three of us than availing a tricycle tour being offered by the locals.

Backpacker dorms, like JJ’s Backpacker Village , really save a lot from our travel budget than booking a reservation on some cozy resorts, well for us. If you have the luxury, go for it. We left our things at the front desk of the accommodation and started exploring the must-destinations of Siquijor, as per the tour info guide we got at the tourism booth near the port.

The original plan was to circumnavigate the island province but we were bedazzled by the beauty of some destinations and we weren’t able to cover everything, a reason to come back. From San Juan, Lazi, and Maria, here’s the list of tourist attractions you must visit while in Siquijor.

CAPILAY SPRING PARK (San Juan)

Locals consider Capilay Spring Park as their public swimming pool located just in front of their municipal hall. Water is cold and deep yet clear where you can actually see tiny fishes swarming. The natural pool directly flows to the sea with its headspring located at the rear end of the pool. There’s no entrance fee but there are some tables on the sides that you could use for some picnic, I bet also for free. At the hillside is a grotto that visitors could also visit for a short prayer.

ENCHANTED BALETE TREE (Lazi)

The 400-year old balete tree is a bit supernatural with the hundreds of roots and vines. The gigantic tree, with its shade, is a nice stop from the long and winding roads of the province, especially on a sunny day. The enchanting tree also provides water to its residents and in fact, you can have an unlimited fish spa with a fee of Php5. The fishes, of different sizes, will nibble your dead skin and tickle your feet.

SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR CHURCH AND CONVENT

San Isidro Labrador Church was declared by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) as one of the most outstanding heritage churches in the Philippines. Both the church and the convent were also considered by the National Museum as national cultural treasures.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

The church was built in 1884 out of coral-stones and hardwood. The simple facade of the church as viewed from the road is really striking with the obstruction of some branches of trees. Interiors of the structure are also minimalist; basic half circle windows, blue ceiling patterned by a single design, and a simple yet striking altarpiece enclosing four images.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

Getting inside the convent was one of the things we failed to do. We made ourselves contented by taking photos of the old building having rusty roofs and wide window panes. The convent is the biggest among the oldest convents in the country and is believed to have been the vacation house for the Diocese’s priests at that time.

CAMBUGAHAY FALLS (Lazi)

Tarzan swing, an activity available on the first tier of the waterfall, made Cambugahay Falls prominent to all tourists. Minus the flock of tourists, the three-tiered waterfall that is surrounded by a lush landscape is a great spot for some meditations. The cold and the not-so-deep water in the basin of the first level is perfect for swimming on midday.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

If you intend to include Cambugahay Falls on your Siquijor itinerary, it’s better to be prepared for the short trek going down to the falls, bring some food with you, be mindful of your belongings, and don’t forget to channel your inner Tarzan.

SALAGDOONG BEACH AND MAN MADE FOREST (Maria)

In a cove on the east side of the island is a hideaway spot for everyone visiting Siquijor. The snaky road going to the beach resort passes by a man-made forest with a canopy of Molave trees shading the road. There are some fees being collected; Php10 environmental fee, Php15 entrance fee, and Php20 parking fee. The small stretch of the beach gets crowded sometimes, has white sand not fine as Boracay but an idyllic place for some beach-bumming.

OUR LADY OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE (Maria)

Going back to San Juan from Salagdoong, we dropped by a church in Maria, Nuestra Senora de Providencia. The century-old church, which is made of brick, is being guarded by the image of Sta. Rita, the patron of impossible cases, holding a skull and a crucifix. The three-tiered belfry is separated by a few meters from the main structure. It was also interesting to see some plants growing on top of the pillars of the church’s façade.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

SAN JUAN BEACH (San Juan)

Siquijor offers one of the best spots for sunset viewing and we literally chased it because we spent a little over two hours in Salagdoong Beach. Thanks to the deserted highways of the province and we made it to San Juan beach before sundown. That sunset on a Saturday was one of the clearest ones I’ve ever seen, clear means not so much cloud on the horizon.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

Most backpacker hostels are located in San Juan beach and morning walks by the beach are usual episodes. Hammocks suspended on coconut trees by the beach in JJ’s Backpacker Village are chill spots while waiting for breakfast.

dumaguete siquijor solo travel

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CHURCH (Siquijor)

Last destination we dropped by before heading back to Dumaguete is St. Francis of Assisi Church just a stone-throw away from Siqujor Port. In front of the church is the Triangular Landmark having the ‘Welcome to Siquijor’ sign. The church is made of stone and cruciform while the convent with stone rubble. A belfry is standing on a distance from the church which locals believed that it also served as a defensive structure, and a watchtower.

OTHER DESTINATIONS

As much as we wanted to squeeze all attractions on our itinerary, a weekend is really not enough to accommodate everything. If by chance you’ll be spending more days in Siquijor, other attractions include the following: nature parks like Bandilaan Mountain View Park, Guiwanon Spring Park, and Tulapos Marine Sanctuary; caves such as Cantilan Cave, Cangmatnog, Boljo, Canghunog-hunog, Tulawog, Canghaling, Bitaug, and Banahaw; waterfalls like Lugnason and Cangbangag Falls; and others such as Paradise Bay, St. Vincent De Ferrer Bell Tower, Kagusuan Beach, and Liloan Forest.

I have one important question.i’ll be in oslob and after that i plan to go to siquijor for 2 nights and then go to palawan. My problem is to go back to cebu city to take the plane. We have a plane at 10:55am. I have tried to search the schedule of the bus from liloan port to cebu city and i didn’t find it. Can you tell me the best way to go to cebu city from liloan port and the bus schedule from there? There is other ways to go to cebu city(airport) from siquijor island ? Thank you

Not sure with the bus schedule from Liloan Port back to Cebu City. I think it’s better for you to be back in Cebu City the night (or day) before your flight to Palawan. It’s too risky to travel in the morning to catch your 10:55AM flight.

4 Days Itinerary to Dumaguete and Siquijor

Dumaguete is one of the most relaxed cities you can find in the Philippines. In addition, it’s an important gateway to other places in the Visayan Region.

It’s connected via sea travel to Siquijor (and other provinces including Cebu, Bohol, and even Zamboanga City ). It’s also possible to visit other places via land travel including Sibulan, Dauin, Valencia, Bais, and Sipalay.

Here’s our itinerary to Dumaguete to Siquijor! I have updated this guide to include side trips to Valencia and Bais as well.

Please enable JavaScript

Humix

P.S. Don’t forget to check out our Island Guide to Siqujor .

How to get to Siquijor

How to get to apo island, what to do (apo island), what to do (dumaguete city), how to get to valencia, how to get to manjuyod, dumaguete city, budget and expenses, reminders and tips, what to read next:.

Here’s the itinerary. Please consider this a rough guide only!

Here are a few notes about this itinerary:

  • You can book your entry and exit flights via Sibulan Airport in Dumaguete City.
  • From the airport, there are vehicles waiting to take you to your destination. Or if you want a cheap option, walk outside the airport and flag down a tricycle or habal-habal where you can pay the regular rate.

Day 1 – Siquijor

  • Ride a habal-habal or tricycle to Dumaguete Port.
  • From Dumaguete Port, ride a ferry to Siquijor. Currently, there are 2 ports in Siquijor: Lanera Port and Siquijor Port . Regular ferry takes 2 hours, P140 per person; fastcraft takes 1 hour, P210 per person. Schedule is from 5:30AM to 6PM. Same applies for the return trip.

Once you arrive in Siquijor Port, there are locals offering tours (habal-habal or tricycle) or motorbike rentals.

By now we’re all familiar with Siquijor. Siquijor is an island province which is known for its waterfalls, Spanish-era churches, and laid-back beaches. Interestingly, Siquijor is also known as Witchcraft Island although currently it’s being promoted as a Healing Destination.

It’s possible to tour Siquijor in 2 days. There are 2 kinds of tours available: the Island Tour and Mountain Tour. Most day trippers choose the Island Tour since it includes the popular spots such as Cambugahay Falls and Salagdoong Beach.

Here are the places you can visit in the Island Tour for a day trip:

  • St. Francis of Assisi Church and I Love Siquijor Signage
  • Lazi Church
  • Capilay Spring Park
  • Century-Old Balete Tree and Fish Spa
  • Cambugahay Falls.
  • Salagdoong Beach
  • Guiwanon Spring Park
  • Paliton Beach
  • Hapitanan Cafe
  • Dumalaay Boulevard

I have written more about it here: Island Guide to Siqujor .

Of these, I liked these stops the best: Century-Old Balete Tree and Fish Spa, Cambugahay Falls, and Salagdoong Beach.

Another stop I recommend is the Tulapos Marine Sanctuary . It’s not normally included in an island tour, so you have to request it specifically. The main activity here is snorkeling where you can see corals, barracudas, turtles and black-tipped reef sharks. There is also a giant clam area.

I learned about it online and I was the only person during my visit. I had a really good time here and it was my first time to see baby sharks in the wild. This is actually one of the dive sites in Siquijor .

I think the rest of the stops including Capilay Spring Park (cold spring) and Guiwanon Spring Park (mangrove park) can be skipped or at least just go down for a quick look.

Paliton Beach is said to be one of the best beaches in Siquijor. For me it was just okay — nothing mindblowing. Other nearby provinces like Cebu have way better beaches.

St. Francis of Assisi Church in Siquijor

Day 2 – Apo Island and Dumaguete City tour

  • From anywhere in Dumaguete City, ride a tricycle to Siaton. From there, ride a jeepney to Malapatay, Zamboanguita. (Total travel time is 20-30 minutes.)
  • Walk toward the port and rent a boat to Apo Island (boat ride 30-45 minutes). You can also look for other joiners to share costs with you.

An easier option is to book a joiner tour which includes round-trip transportation from Dumaguete City, boat tour, guide fees, and lunch. Snorkeling and fins rental is also included.

Apo Island is a volcanic island located in Dauin in Negros Oriental, one ferry away from Dumaguete City. It’s one of the best dive sites in the country. If you are not a diver, you can go on a boat tour and explore 3 spots: the turtle area and two snorkeling spots.

I booked a tour via Harold’s Mansion. Harold’s Mansion is a budget accommodation that offers cheap day tours to Apo Island. The tour starts at 6AM and ends at around 3PM.

This is my favorite part of this Dumaguete-Siquijor trip. The guides at Harold’s Mansion were extremely helpful. Each small group is assigned a guide and the guide will look for turtles and then signal for others to come when he spots one.

I saw a handful of sea turtles in the wild. They don’t mind the presence of humans so they just go about their business — gliding smoothly in the water or eating at the bottom of the seafloor.

The snorkeling areas were also beautiful, with large corals. I’m not a very good swimmer and a guide helped me get underwater shots of the snorkeling areas.

You can read more about my Snorkeling Experience in Apo Island (Negros Oriental ) .

Apo Island in Dauin

Dumaguete City is a university town. It is a great place to relax, but if you’re looking for activities you need to go on day trips from here.

Here are the things you can do in the city:

  • Stroll along Rizal Boulevard.
  • Go food tripping. Taste the famous sans rival and silvanas by Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries .
  • Visit the Tabo-Tabo market in Malapatay. It is open every Wednesday. It’s a cultural experience in itself, as you can see goods sold by mountain farmers including livestock, native delicacies and more.

I stayed here for 1-2 days, but mostly in my hotel room. I did went out to go to the sans rival cafe (which is highly recommended) and eat seafood all by myself.

Seafood in Hayahay Restobar, Dumaguete

Day 3 – Valencia

  • From Dumaguete, head to the jeepney terminal (south of public market) and ride a jeep to Valencia. Travel time is 15-20 minutes, fare is around P15 per person.

Note : Every Sunday, jeepneys going back to Dumaguete are until afternoon only.

Once you get off in Valencia, there will be motorbike and tricycle drivers offering you a tour. There are no standard rates so you have to haggle.

Valencia is another town in Negros Oriental that offers unique nature attractions, such as mountain hot springs and waterfalls. It’s one of the less-visited day trips from Dumaguete.

Here are the places you can see in Valencia:

  • Tierra Alta Resort . A Greek-inspired resort built in the slopes of Palinpinon. The main attraction of the resort is the lighthouse which offers a 360 view of the surrounding town.
  • Pulang Bato Falls . Also called Malabo Falls by locals. It is part of the Twin Falls, with the other one located just several meters away. Pulang Bato Falls is 30 meter high and surrounded by reddish rocks, caused by sulfur deposits. The waterfall is located inside a private resort so there is an entrance fee.
  • Hot Springs . There are a handful of hot springs in Valencia. Red Rock Hot Spring is the most popular. It offers a nice mountain view and it has a more natural feel compared to other hot spring resorts in the area, such as Ocean 24.
  • Casaroro Falls . This 100-meter-high falls is one of the best nature attractions in Negros Oriental. To reach the falls, you need to climb down a 350-step staircase. Getting a guide is recommended.

I enjoyed this trip, especially the hot spring. After exploring Siquijor and snorkeling in Apo Island the past days, I badly needed the soothing warm water. The mountain view is nice too.

Day 4 – Manjuyod in Bais City

  • From Dumaguete City, head to Ceres bus terminal and ride a bus to Bais City. Travel time is 1 hour, fare is around P70 per person.
  • From the bus terminal, ride a tricycle to Canibol Wharf.

From Canibol Wharf, you can arrange a boat to Manjuyod. If you’re in a group, you can share expenses. If not, wait for other joiners or book a joiner tour in advance.

Manjuyod is one of more recent attractions in Visayas.

The main activity here island hopping. The itinerary includes:

  • Manjuyod Sand Bar
  • Dolphin watching activity along Tanon Straight
  • Bais City Bird Sanctuary & Mangrove Forest.

Manjuyod Sand Bar in Bais City

Where to stay

There’s actually a lot of options for budget Dumaguete City hotels and inns, starting from P300 above. The ones located downtown are popular, so if you’re staying in that part of the city it’s best to reserve in advance.

Here are the best stays in Dumaguete City:

  • Henia Hotel |  Book discounted rates here
  • Go Hotels Dumaguete |   Book discounted rates here

Here are the best budget options:

  • Flying Fish Hostel |  Book discounted rates here
  • Hostel Tropical |  Book discounted rates here

Harold’s Mansion is possibly the most famous backpacker lodging in Dumaguete. Bunk beds in dorms are cheap, but for a little more you can have a single-bed aircon room in other inns. Harold’s Mansion is convenient because they offer Apo Island tours for joiners.

Looking for other accommodations in Dumaguete City? Book discounted hotels in Dumaguete City here .

There are several beach resorts in Siquijor and it’s relatively cheap especially if you’re traveling with someone. You can get an air-conditioned room for around P1000 for 2-3 people.

Here are the best stays in Siquijor:

  • Coco Grove Beach Resort | Book discounted rates here
  • Infinity Heights Resort |  Book discounted rates here
  • Charisma Beach Resort | Book discounted rates here
  • Tori’s Backpackers Inn |   Book discounted rates here
  • JJ’s Backpackers Village | Book discounted rates here

I was solo so I opted to stay somewhere cheap: JJ’s Backpackers Village. It’s situated alongside other beach resorts in San Juan. This hostel has a modern native decor, complete with bamboo bunk beds. Apparently it’s a favorite especially of foreign tourists, so make sure to book ahead. There’s an eatery about 10 minutes away from JJ Backpackers Village where you can eat for cheap.

Looking for other accommodations in Siquijor? Book discounted resorts in Siquijor here .

Here’s a summary of major expenses:

Budget depends on how many you are in the trip. For 2 people, a safe budget is P8000 per person .

Here are important reminders about this Dumaguete-Siquijor itinerary:

  • The cheapest way to explore the island is by renting a motorbike. You will need a driver’s license and they are strict about this requirement. This way, you can also explore lesser-known waterfalls in the island.
  • I actually stayed longer in Siquijor on my trip. One thing that I learned is that if you’re staying overnight or longer, you definitely need to know how to drive because public transport is rare and habal-habal/tricycles ask for premium for going to places.

APO ISLAND:

  • If booking a joiner tour for Apo Island, it’s best to reserve in advance to get a confirmed slot.

Here are some useful contact information:

SIQUIJOR ITINERARY – DAY 1:

Paliton beach.

The first thing that should be on the top of your itinerary is to hit the beach!

Paliton Beach is rated as one of the best beaches in Siquijor for its glistening white sands and palm tree fringed shoreline.

It’s located in the main tourist area of San Juan, so you’ll be within walking distance if you book your stay in this area.

There are a few oceanside cafes and beach bars dotted along Paliton Beach serving up cold brews and delicious meals.

Most have happy hour between 4 pm and 6 pm, so make sure to get there around this time if you want to score some cheap drinks and watch the sunset!

If you visit Paliton Beach during the day it’s just as good. You can find a number of tree swings tied to bent palms where you can swing out over the water’s edge!

Apart from that, there isn’t a whole lot more to do other than go swimming in the ocean, lay in a hammock underneath the coconut palms, or read a book by the beach.

LUGNASON FALLS

Lugnason Falls, also known as Zodiac Falls, is one of the top 3 waterfalls in Siquijor .

Lugnason Falls is located in the main tourist area of San Juan. From Paliton Beach, it’s approximately a 15-minute drive inland to reach this popular tourist spot.

The entrance is free though you may be asked to pay a small parking fee of 10 pesos.

From the jump-off point, it takes around 15 minutes to walk along a dirt trail through the forest to reach Lugnason Falls.

Lugnason Falls features a 5-meter waterfall and a large spring filled with blue Gatorade-colored water.

It’s an adventurer’s playground and reminded me of the blue-ass water that I found at Kawasan Falls in Cebu .

Lugnason Falls is a great spot to hang out and go swimming under the falls to cool off. For thrill-seekers, jumping from the top of the falls into the catch basin below is a lot of fun too!

Don’t end the adventure here as there are more unique spots to be found in the same valley as Lugnason Falls.

Follow the jungle trail downstream where you will find man-made aqua ducts and an epic cold spring perfect for swimming!

CENTURY-OLD BALETE TREE

The Century-Old Balete Tree is one of the most visited tourist attractions on the island and it’s easy to see why!

This 400-year-old tree is worthy of a quick stop during your stay.

Century-Old Balete Tree is located in Lazi on the south coast. From San Juan, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive to reach this ancient tree and the entrance fee is only 10 pesos.

The 400-year-old  Enchanted Balete Tree in Siquijor has a very mystical and spiritual background.

It’s a place that local shamen use for sacred rituals, however, I didn’t see any witchcraft when I visited.

At the base of the Century Old Balete Tree is a small freshwater pond filled with fish that will nibble the dead skin off the soles of your feet if you dip them in.

Enjoy your fish foot spa while marveling at the thick canopy and huge vines that hang from the Old Enchanted Balete Tree.

Next to the Century-Old Tree in Siquijor, there is a restaurant where you can grab a meal with drinks and also a souvenir store selling all sorts of gifts.

VISIT THE LAZI CHURCH

Lazi Church, also known as San Isidro Labrador Parish Church, is a popular stop on most people’s Siquijor itinerary.

The Lazi Church is the oldest, largest, and most significant Roman Catholic Church on Siquijor Island Philippines.

Must Read: 21 Best Travel Accessories For Any Trip

San Isidro Labrador Parish Church is located in Lazi on the south coast. From San Juan, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive to reach this tourist attraction.

The construction of Lazi Church was completed in 1884 and was built mainly with stone and hardwood.

The bell tower attached to one side of the church was built one year later which is the most dominant feature on the outside.

Next to the church, you can also find a silent convent that acts as a museum that holds many old artifacts and antiques. The entrance fee at the museum is around 20 pesos.

Lazi Church also plays home to large masses and it’s possible to take a tour inside this century-old church with a priest.

LAGAAN FALLS

Lagaan Falls is one of the best waterfalls in Siquijor and a must-see during your visit!

Swimming holes, rope swings, rock jumps, and small caves are just some of the things you can expect to find at these falls.

But before you get to the falls, don’t forget to pack your Quick-Dry Travel Towel .

Lagaan Falls is located in Lazi on the south coast. From the main tourist area of San Juan, it’s approximately a 30-minute drive to reach the falls.

The entrance fee is 30 pesos and parking is free. Local guides will offer to take you down to the falls at the entrance, but this is not necessary as the trail is clearly marked.

However, I visited these falls on my own and decided to take a guide for good company and he asked for 50 pesos for his services.

It takes around 15 minutes to walk along a dirt trail underneath a dense rainforest canopy to reach t he first level of this Siquijor waterfall.

Some of the features you will find here are a large swimming hole, rope swings, small caves, rock jumps, and a wide set of falls.

Don’t forget to follow the jungle trail upstream where you will find small freshwater rock pools and natural jacuzzis.

You could easily spend a few hours here jumping from pool to pool and swinging from the tree swings and not get bored.

CAMBUGAHAY FALLS

Cambugahay Falls is arguably the best waterfall in Siquijor that is most famous for its tiered levels and freshwater cascades that are surrounded by lush rainforest.

Cambugahay Falls is located in Lazi which is approximately a 30-minute drive from San Juan to reach the falls and the entrance fee is 20 pesos.

From the jump-off point, it takes around 5 minutes to walk down a set of concrete steps to reach the first level of Cambugahay Falls.

These epic falls feature a large natural swimming hole and some man-made structures including rope swings, bamboo rafts, and a wide set of falls.

Besides the bottom swimming hole, there are a few more levels of the falls to explore.

Make sure not to forget your Waterproof Phone Case , it would be a shame not to take amazing photos on the way!

Follow the trail upstream and across the bamboo bridges where you will find more freshwater swimming holes, flowing rock pools, and several cliff-jumping spots.

SIQUIJOR ITINERARY – DAY 2:

Tubod marine sanctuary.

Day 2 of this Siquijor itinerary begins at Tubod Marine Sanctuary, a protected reef that is rated as one of the best snorkeling and dive sites on Siquijor.

Explore the beautiful underwater world that this location has to offer.

Tubod Marine Sanctuary can be found in front of Coco Grove Resort and just off the shore from Tubod Beach in San Juan.

From Paliton Beach, it’s approximately a 10-minute drive to reach Tubod Marine Sanctuary.

Must Read → 3 Weeks Philippines Itinerary

Colorful corals and an abundance of marine life flourish within this protected marine sanctuary so you are in for a real treat!

You can bring your own mask and snorkel with you or rent one from the resort and it’s a short-distance swim out to the reef.

There are minimal currents and waves at Tubod Marine Sanctuary and the waters are incredibly clear.

I recommend setting aside at least one hour of your day to enjoy snorkeling at this location.

MAN-MADE FOREST SIQUIJOR

The Man-Made Forest in Siquijor is similar to the Bilar Man-Made Forest in Bohol , though on a smaller scale.

A visit to this tourist attraction is worthy of a quick stop for a photo during your adventures around the island.

The man-made forest can be found in Maria on the southeastern corner of Siquijor Island. From San Juan, it is approximately a 45-minute drive.

This enchanting stretch of road is around 2 km long and lined with beautiful mahogany trees between the towns of Minalulan and Liloan.

When you enter this parallel tunnel of trees, you’ll feel like you’ve just entered another realm.

You will also notice the temperature drop drastically as you drive through the man-made forest because the canopy above almost completely cuts out the sun.

There is also a nearby beach just before you arrive at the man-made forest that is worth checking out for a quick photo.

man made forest siquijor

TALISAY BEACH

Talisay Beach Siquijor is not as crowded and popular as Paliton Beach which is why you should definitely find the time to visit this underrated beach.

Talisay Beach can be found between Lazi and Maria which is also in the same direction as Salagdoong Beach.

There is no official entry point for Talisay Beach, you can just park your scooter on the side of the road and follow one of the dirt trails down to the shoreline.

Emerging out of the jungle trail, you’ll step foot onto a white sand and coral cove that is stunning, to say the least.

Talisay Beach is best visited at high tide when the water comes right up to the palm-fringed shoreline, making it easier to go for a swim.

At low tide, you will have to walk across the rocky reef to find deeper water for a refreshing dip.

Click here to check the tide times in advance.

Talisay Beach is also a renowned spot for snorkeling in Siquijor, so make sure to bring a mask and snorkel set with you down to the beach.

SALAGDOONG BEACH & CLIFF JUMP

Salagdoong Beach is hands down one of the best beaches in Siquijor, which is most famous for snorkeling around the colorful reefs, relaxing on the secluded beaches and epic cliff jumping!

Salagdoong Beach is attached to Salagdoong Beach Resort on the far east corner of Siquijor Island in the town of Maria.

From San Juan, it’s approximately a 50-minute drive to reach Salagdoong Beach and the entrance fee is 30 pesos per person plus an additional 20 pesos for parking.

Salagdoong Beach boasts two beautiful coves lined with coconut palms and white sand shorelines.

Just off the shore is a colorful reef that is great for snorkeling and swimming.

I would have to say the slippery slide and cliff jumping at Salagdoong Beach is the main attraction and one for thrill-seekers!

Make sure you must visit during high tide to do these activities.

The cliff jumps at this beach were definitely up my alley! There are two diving boards here, one is around 5 meters and the other is 10 meters.

I recommend spending around 1 or 2 hours at Salagdoong Beach before continuing on to explore the rest of the island

SIQUIJOR BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY

The beautiful butterfly sanctuary in Siquijor was one of my favorite stops during my Siquijor trip and I recommend checking it out for yourselves.

The Siquijor Butterfly Sanctuary is located close to the highest point on the island at Cang-apa village between Lazi and Larena. From San Juan, it is approximately a 40-minute drive.

The butterfly park is run by a local man who welcomes guests to walk around the gardens and interact with the butterflies and other bugs inside his sanctuary.

It’s worth a quick stop to have a poke around and grab a fresh buko (coconut) before continuing on to the next spot!

QUISOL MOUNTAIN VIEW

Quisol Mountain View boasts one of the best panoramic viewpoints which overlooks Siquijor Island and its pristine coastlines.

This epic viewpoint is an off-the-beaten-path adventure that is easy to find and far away from the crowds at other tourist spots.

Quisol Mountain View is located at the top of the hill between Lazi and Larena.

It is approximately a 40-minute drive from San Juan to Quisol Mountain View. Here is the exact pin location on Google Maps.

There is no official parking lot or tourist desk at this location, so you will have to park your scooter on the side of the road and find the entry point which isn’t too hard to find.

You will see a large sign with the words ‘Quisol Mountain View’ written on it and make-shift stairs cut into the land leading up to the viewpoint. See the image below for reference.

It takes around 5 minutes to walk to the top of the mountain, and you’ll be rewarded with extensive views of Siquijor Island.

Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy on the day I visited, but on a nice clear day, you will be able to see the neighboring islands of Cebu , Negros, and Bohol .

SIQUIJOR ITINERARY – DAY 3:

Day trip to apo island.

On the last day of your Siquijor itinerary, I highly recommend heading over to the incredible Apo Island , a volcanic island located 30 km off Siquijor’s southern coastline.

Notorious for its dive sites and snorkeling, an Apo Island day trip is one of the top-rated things to do.

To book an Apo Island Tour you can pop into one of the many dive shops and resorts located along Paliton Beach in San Juan and organize your trip through them at least one day in advance.

The Apo Island tour is an entire day of snorkeling with sea turtles, fish, sea snakes, and hundreds of colorful corals.

There are also a few small mountain peaks on Apo Island that you can hike.

WHERE TO STAY IN SIQUIJOR

Siquijor has hundreds of accommodation options to choose from, so I have narrowed it down to a few of the best places to stay to fit the needs of budget backpackers, luxury travelers, and everyone in between.

Getting around siquijor island.

There are a few different methods of transportation for getting around the island and they are by scooter, habal habal, tricycle, or Jeepney.

You can rent a scooter for as little as 250 pesos per day and make your way around Siquijor Island at your own pace.

When you arrive on the island by ferry, you’ll find that there are half a dozen scooter rental stores located at the Larena ferry terminal which is super convenient.

You can pick up a set of wheels for the time you plan to spend on the island.

Suppose you are not confident driving a scooter, the other option is to hail down a Jeepney, tricycle, or habal habal (motorbike taxi) along the main road in Larena and get a ride to San Juan, the main tourist hub on the island.

The cost depends on how good your bartering skills are, though for a 40-minute drive from Larena to San Juan in a Jeepney should be around 100 pesos, in a tricycle 500 pesos and habal-habal 350 pesos.

Note that these prices are rough estimates.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SIQUIJOR

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Siquijor is between April and July when temperatures are hot and barely any rainfall.

This is also high season in Siquijor, so expect to see many tourists during these months.

I recommend visiting on the shoulder months of the high season between November and March, which sees a bit of rainfall but usually only lasts for a couple of hours and the rest of the day is sunny.

Try to avoid the typhoon season in Siquijor which is between August and October.

WHERE TO EAT IN DUMAGUETE

Hibbard Avenue is home to some awesome bars and restaurants. I happened to chance upon a fellow female backpacker who told me about Neva’s Pizza. Lots of thanks Cess if you happen to be reading this! I absolutely love the pizza. It was probably one of the best tasting pizzas I’ve ever had which might even give those famous pizza chains a run for their money. Not only do they serve great pizza but their pasta dishes and rice value meals are to die for. Pay this place a visit and I guarantee they will give you the best value for your money.

You might also want to check other interesting restaurants in the city.

  • MOON CAFÉ SILLIMAN – Mexican with a Filipino touch and nothing but good words are all what you will wallow about this restaurant over the internet. Need I say more? Just give this one a Go!
  • TACO SURF – Probably Taco’s and everything Mexican would pop into your mind the moment you hear of this restaurant but surprisingly it is mostly known for its delectable sushi platters. Weird but definitely worth it.
  • HAYAHAY TREEHOUSE BAR & VIEW DECK – Craving for delectable seafood dishes? Look no further. This restaurant got them all covered. Plus, enjoy the view of the coastlines while chilling with a bottle of beer or a glass of cocktail.
  • SANS RIVAL BISTRO – Located along Rizal Boulevard and fronting the coastline of Dumaguete, this restaurant boasts not just a great view of the sea but a menu that’s worth every peso.
  • FLAMIN’ GRILL CAFÉ – Burgers. Fries. Buffalo Wings at just the right price? This should be the place you should go to.

There may be plenty of restaurants in the city that you can choose from but nothing beats the local favorite. Take a walk in Rizal Boulevard at sundown and join the locals and other tourists enjoy clean streetfood mainly of chicken tempura and balut (boiled duck’s egg). Compliment it with beer and just simply have a wonderful time.

TIPS AND OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Hiring a tricycle from the airport can be a bit pricey. Better to walk outside of the airport and ride a jeepney (multicab) and it will already take you to the city for the price of P10. You can get off the main highway and hire a tricycle for the minimum fare of P7.00
  • When you are touring the city or the nearby tourist spots, it will be better for you to rent a motorcycle. Check Kokoi’s Motorbike Rental through mobile no. 09269230455 or MoTour Motorcycles for Rent through telephone no. 035-226 1890.
  • If you want to explore the nearby provinces such as Bohol, Cebu and Siquijor, it will always be best to know the schedule time of departure of ferryboats before planning your itinerary. It will be an absolute budget saver.
  • I hate writing anything bad about any place but if you are a female solo traveler, be very careful. Some men in Dumaguete aren’t the nicest in the world.
  • Hotel check out time is 12NN. To avoid paying extra, you can just leave your bags in the reception and go back for it after your day tour.

HOW SPENDING P6538 IN 5 DAYS POSSIBLE? Read about MY ONCE, ALMOST SO PERFECT CENTRAL VISAYAS TOUR STORY

When I traveled to Dumaguete on the last week of September 2015, I was alone, a very first for me.  For the longest time, I had been travelling with Boyfie or with some friends so at that time, I was just glad to get one heck of a nuisance off my back, for just a short while that is (but honestly, I missed them). I  was ecstatic at the same time nervous but I didn’t let it show. I just wanted to have a great time hoping to discover the perks of being a solo traveler in a place that was once unknown to me.. The weather wasn’t at its best as well. A couple of showers in the morning hindered me from getting started with my well-planned adventure.

To make things worse, this trip was bombarded with a lot of awful things throughout the 5 days I was there. There was that traffic jam in SLEX that I almost missed my 7AM flight. There’s that almost getting molested by a local maniac and a whole lot more of those unexpected misfortunes. Should I be thankful I am normally as passive as the most passive human being ever existed since that awful stuff did nothing to make me falter or have the worst of time? Anyhow, allow me to walk you through my first solo adventure which didn’t quite turn out the way I planned.

DAY 1: NATURE TRIP IN ONE OF DUMAGUETE’S GEMS, THE LAKES OF DANAO AND BALINSASAYAW

I arrived in Dumaguete at 9AM, just in time for me to get started with my itinerary that I named as the “Ultimate Nature Experience” with plans of seeing the Twin Lakes , Casaroro Falls   and Pulangbato Falls . However the weather didn’t allow things to fall just as planned. I didn’t get on with touring until after 12 noon. I went to see the twin lakes then since they seemed to be more favorable in proximity than the waterfalls in Valencia. I rode a mini jeep en route Amlan and alighted at the juncture in San Jose. I hired a motorcycle and driver to take me to the jewels lying hidden in the mountains. The next series of events were the most captivating that day at the same time the most horrible (will write a separate post).

DAY 2: CHASING WATERFALLS IN VALENCIA

Waterfalls are the apple of my eyes and those gems in Valencia are definitely not the kind to be missed so early morning of my 2nd day, off I went to the little town situated just south of the bustling Dumaguete. I rode a jeep and hired a motorcycle plus driver upon reaching the town. This day made me completely forget all the awful things that happened the day before and some other bad days I had prior to this trip.

DAY 3: SWIMMING WITH THE WHALESHARKS IN OSLOB AND THE SEA TURTLES IN APO ISLAND

The night before, I spoke with Cess, a dorm mate and a fellow solo traveler who has travelled all over Visayas for past 2 weeks. She gave valuable tips to cheap eats and awesome places to visit while in Dumaguete which included swimming with the whalesharks in Oslob. Although this is on my bucket list, this however wasn’t part of my original itinerary since I had reserved it for my trip to Cebu come January of 2016.  Yet she made it seemed so amazing that first thing in the morning after we’ve spoken, off I went to see these gentle giants.

My trip to Oslob was just fine but it was completely not much to my liking (Will write a separate post about it). Now to brighten things up, shortly after I left Oslob I went to see Apo Island and the adorable sea turtles.. I would have regretted calling the day over after some awry hours spent in Oslob as the time I had in Apo Island was that turning point I was just looking for.

DAY 4: A FUNFILLED DAY IN THE MYSTIQUE ISLAND OF FIRE, SIQUIJOR

Trips to Siquijor from Dumaguete are limited. I was not able to catch the last trip to the island the day after coming from an awesome adventure in Apo Island so I instead woke early to catch the first trip on my 4th day. My time in Siquijor was probably the happiest and the most memorable. People were very friendly and they effortlessly saved themselves a special place in my heart. In the place widely known for evil sorcery was where I had the most wonderful conversation, hearty laugh, unmatched thrill and adventure and the safest feeling away from home. Siquijor will always be dear to me.

I must have really loved Siquijor! So much that I missed the last ferry back to Dumaguete at 6PM forcing me spend the night there. It cost me more money and worse! My trip to Bohol. I should be disappointed which at first I was (I even cried! Haha) but instead of brooding over my messed up plans, I went to see the local carnival and joined in celebrating the town’s fiesta.

DAY 5: THE GREAT MISS

Yes. I missed Bohol. My plan was after Siquijor, I’ll go back to Dumaguete, pick up my stuff at Harold’s Mansion then ride a Ceres bus to Cebu City so I could catch the first ferry bound to Bohol. But this didn’t happen. 5AM I woke up. Although I enjoyed every minute I had spent the last night but waking up to slowly realize I have to wait for another opportunity to see the treasures of Bohol is like waking up to a bad hangover. But it was not the time to wallow on my failure so after completely picking up my senses, immediately I ran to the port where several other passengers lined at the ticket booth hoping to catch the first trip to Dumaguete. I arrived in  Dumaguete a little over 9AM but instead of going directly back to Harold’s, I took the time to roam around and explore the city. To Go fastcraft to Bohol wont be available until 3PM giving me plenty of time to get enough of the City Of Gentle People.

I arrived in Bohol at 5PM giving me too short of a time to see even the nearest tourist site. It again brought me a feeling of regret, but it was just too late to be sulking over one great miss. I just wanted that day to end so off  I went to find me a place to doze off the misery away!

The following morning. I woke up early to catch my flight back to Manila.

You mentioned you can stay at Bethel for 250.00 pesos. Is this a typo? I am pretty sure staying at Bethel is not that cheap.

They have dorm type rooms. You can stay there for at least P250/night. Just not sure if rates have been updated recently. Or if they no longer offer it.

How to get to dumaguete port from dumaguete airport.

From Dumaguete Airport, you can take a tricycle , Easyride , or a bus to Dumaguete Port.

The travel time is around 15-20 minutes depending on traffic and the fare for a tricycle is around ₱150- ₱ 200 if you choose to ride the tricycle inside the airport.

Here’s a tip from a local who had been in and out of the airport for a lot of time. Walk less than a minute to the National Highway and hail a tricycle.

Before riding it, make sure that both parties agree on the fare that you’ll pay . The fare is only ₱50 at most , that is ₱100 less than the tricycles inside the airport.

But if you are really on a budget , and are traveling light, you can hail an Easyride instead . Choose the one with a route from Sibulan to Dumaguete (you can see this sign at the side of the Easyride).

The fare is only ₱15 and make sure to tell the driver to drop you near Silliman Portal West . From there, you can see the boulevard and the sea, but if there are too many objects blocking the view, ask a local and they’ll be happy to tell you where to go.

It’s only a less than 5-minute walk to the pier so if you don’t mind the hassle and want to save more, you can choose this option.

A bus is also a convenient option and the fare is also ₱15 only.

You can hail a non-aircon bus on the National Road and just tell the conductor that you are going to Dumaguete Pier Port. The bus will drop you off at the nearest stop in the pier.

Dolphins near an island in Dumaguete

When you're in Dumaguete, chances are you'll be doing a lot of sightseeing and visiting its best islands and beaches. You can even attend its famous festivals and parades.

It's best to plan your trip around its dry summer season as well as its colorful festivals to fully enjoy the province and their culture. This section is divided into two: a guide on the dry and summer season, plus the two annual festivals within the region.

Dumaguete weather is at its best from February to March, the chilly but dry months of the year; and from May to early June, the summer months. If you don't like traveling during the rainy season, avoid going there around October.

If you don't mind the rain and the closed down tourist spots, you will be able to witness and enjoy one of its famous festivals in the mid of October

If you want to see the city in its lively and vibrant form, consider visiting during the time of their festive celebrations. Both locals and international travelers attend street parades and join local games that are exciting and fun to be a part of!

Two of its most popular celebrations include the Sandurot Festival and Buglasan Festival. This section will describe the festivals and how important it is in helping shape the culture of Dumaguete.

Sandurot Festival

The city holds its Sandurot Festival, which means "fellowship and reaching out," every September. You wouldn't want to miss the Pasigarbo event, where the streets are full of drumbeats and dancing.

And of course, Pasundayag, where different stories of the city's traditions are narrated through dancing. The roads are overcrowded during this time, so make sure to keep your essential belongings near you.

Buglasan Festival

In the middle of October every year, they celebrate the Buglasan Festival, popularly known as "The Festival of Festivals." It's a province-wide event that runs for ten days. Aside from exciting activities, you can witness street dancing and showdowns every 3rd Friday of October.

Most of the establishments are open during this time. Bring your family and friends! You'll get a taste of Dumaguete culture at this festival.

Before visiting, make sure to check  weather updates as this will help plan itinerary better. It will also help in knowing what you have to wear on specific days.

Book in advance if you can as there are limited seats during peak hours.

Go directly to the Bacolod South Bus terminal and look for available buses operated by Ceres Liner . It's the most effective and convenient way without unnecessary stops along the way. Travel time is around 5 to 6 hours. If you can, go to the bus stop 30 minutes before your target time. Seats get occupied quickly, especially during the morning.

Similar to Cebu, Bohol is a vast island region near Dumaguete that you can reach via a quick flight or a ferry ride. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights at selected times. Ocean Jet Ferry offers ferry rides that are cheap and convenient.

Just make sure to book tickets at least a week for your chosen trip as seats may be bought quickly due to the number of people traveling from Bohol. Make sure to bring all essential documents with you too for fast entry to these transportations.

If you want the fastest route from Bohol, take a direct 50-minute flight from Tagbilaran. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer flights going to and from Tagbilaran. Non-stop flights are 50 minutes long while connecting flights are on an average of 4 hours to 5 hours long. Book in advance to get the best seats.

You can ride fast crafts and ferries bound from Tagbilaran in Bohol. Ocean Jet Ferry offers rides going to and from the Tagbilaran port. The travel time takes around two hours. Take note of their policies and requirements before traveling.

Most modes of transportation are accessible and cheap. Compared to other regions, traveling in Dumaguete is pretty straightforward. Depending on your budget and comfort and convenience preference, you can choose from these types of transportation options:

Tricyle in Dumaguete

Fare is cheap, and if you're going around Dumaguete, some even offer exclusive use for tours. Just make sure to have at least an idea on the best route by searching online so you can avoid getting overcharged.

To reach nearby towns, you can head to the Ceres Bus Terminal in Dumaguete City and hop on and off a city bus. Riding a bus is your best option for long-distance travel within and outside Dumaguete.

Bring exact or smaller bills for the fare so the operator won’t have a hard time finding change for your money.

Self-Drive Motorcycle

If you want a more rugged type of transportation, you can opt to rent a motorcycle. This type of transportation is perfect for a short city tour, especially if you're a pair of travelers. You can also rent one but make sure that you know how to maneuver it, especially if you're in a place you're not familiar with.

Ask if you can use a mobile app such as Waze or  Google Maps while driving the motorcycle. They usually have a mobile phone holder you can attach on the motorcycle.

Private Tour Vans

Alternatively, there are plenty of travel agencies that offer private tours in vans to explore an array of activities in Dumaguete. The majority of these tour operators are DOT-accredited, which means their offered tours and services are tried and tested.

It's a good option if you're seeking a hassle-free adventure. All you have to do is focus on your outfits for the day and completing your itinerary.

When in Dumaguete, you have to keep in mind that the most crucial aspect of your itinerary is the place you'll be staying in. If you're going to the beach, it might be best to stay at beach resorts.

If you're going on a sightseeing excursion, it might be best to stay near the city center. It depends on what activities you'll be doing and destinations you'll be going to during your stay in the beautiful province.

This section will discuss the types of accommodations, neighborhoods and areas, and the top accommodations in any budget within the region.

There are a lot of accommodation types in Dumaguete. You have to find one that fits your preference. Consider your budget, the number of people staying, and its proximity to the attractions you're planning to go to.

Make sure to book in advance so you can get the best rooms and deals within the area. Prepare your travel documents such as passport and valid I.D. so you can reserve quickly. Also, expect that most accommodations ask for a security deposit that will be refunded upon check-out.

Island and Beach Resorts or Hotels

If you're looking for a place to stay that has direct access to the beaches, then staying at a resort is ideal. It's the most convenient choice if you're traveling for island and beach trips or diving adventures.

Most offer rooms with beachfront access and have excellent amenities such as Wi-Fi and breakfast. Some even have their indoor pool. There are reasonable hotels that are quite near the city center, providing comfort regardless if you're staying for business or vacation. Most of these hotels offer valet service and 24-hour security.

Vacation Rentals

Homestays are also popular here. Many homeowners work outside the province, which is why they let other people rent their houses during peak season, and sometimes, off-peak season.

It's much better to rent a home if you're in a big group as you get the extra amenities such as a kitchen and laundry area. You might have to pay a security deposit and a cleaning fee, so make sure to ask the owner in advance.

In case you're traveling solo, or you're a group who's into budget-friendly accommodations, don't fret! There are multiple hostels in Dumaguete that are suitable for any budget traveler. Avoid the ones located on far neighborhoods as the commute going to and from the top destinations in the province might be more expensive.

The province of Dumaguete is divided into 30 barangays. However, when you're in the region, you'd mostly be frequenting five towns only, namely: Dumaguete City, Dauin, Bacong, Valencia and Sibulan.

It's essential to be familiar with these areas so you won't get lost. Here are some of the critical information you need to know about these neighborhoods and areas in the province:

It's also the home of Baslay Hot Springs, a geothermal spring which can be accessed by a short hike through a jungle. Most local and international travelers stay within the area for the mentioned attractions.

Located on the southern part of the coast, it is one of the smallest towns not only in Dumaguete but in the whole Negros Oriental. Most historical monuments are located here, as well as art museums catering to various local and international artists. You can ride a jeepney from the city center going to Bacong.

When you're in Valencia, you will notice that the winds are more relaxed than in the city proper. It's because it's on higher ground. It's the main area for agricultural production in Dumaguete with the abundance of fruits and vegetables. Going here is easy as routes are going directly here from the city center.

It is where you can find Dumaguete's airport. The local seaport is also in this area, as well as other modes of transportation. Although there's no nightlife in the area, it's one of the most highly-developed municipalities in the province. You can comfortably ride a jeep going here from the city center.

DIY Trip and Travel Guide to Dumaguete, Siquijor, Bohol and Cebu: What to do, Expenses and Itinerary for 6 Days

travel guide to apo island dumaguete

  • There are no established rates for tour guides in Aguinid Falls and Dao Falls. Please don't take this as an excuse to not to give them a tip. If you do, please make sure it is commensurate to the amount of efforts and your guide did to give you a memorable and enjoyable trip here.
  • Please contact Fantasy Lodge ahead of time . They have a website and Facebook fan page to get updated of their rates. This hotel is popular to both locals and international travelers, to save time and for your peace of mind please reserve in advance. kawa fee is only good for 45 minutes of soaking and relaxation - a bit pricey but definitely worth it. You can also join their other package tours such as river trekking in Matutinao, swimming in Montaneza hot springs and of course a body spa & massage.
  •  For your lunch, there's a store near the Aguinid Falls jump off. Please order your food before going to the falls so they'll have it ready once you're done with the tour. It's really cheap for a generous serving.  Try their best-selling Filipino dish, native chicken adobo
  • Sorry I can't disclose the amount of the van we paid because it was pre-arranged. To have an idea, it does not go lo wer than php 2,000 for a day trip at any point of South Cebu. Please contact Kuya Arthur (number above).

diving in apo island dumaguete

  • The most hassle-free way to enjoy Apo Island is to book with Harold's Diveshop. Fee includes land transfer to/from Malatapay, boat, guides, snorkeling set (mask & fins), snacks (fruits, bread & jam), drinks (water , coffee & tea) and simple lunch (pancit). Reserve ahead of time - they have a website.

Balete tree in Sijuijor

  • Multicab charge is cheaper if you skip Cantabon Cave. But why skip it?
  • Fee for Cantabon Cave is good for 3 pax and it includes 2 guides and helmets. We brought our own flashlight/headlamp
  • No entrance fee for Cambugahay Falls and use of Tarzan swing. They are probably getting revenues from the parking fee.
  • We had our lunch after our trip to Cambugahay falls. Food in Siquijor is really cheap and delicious - one meal costs less than Php 50.
  •  Be conscious of the boat schedules to and from Siquijor and try to book tickets as soon as you can.
  • I don't recommend our accommodation for Tagbilaran.
  • We were picked up by Kuya John from the pier going to the hotel - free of charge

Mag-aso falls Bohol

  • The Sipatan Hanging Bridge(s) or the Twin Hanging Bridges of Sevilla, Bohol. The bridges are made of bamboo but the support cables are made of steel. However, talking a walk here will surely give you some goosebumps because the Bohol Hanging Bridge still bounces up and down a bit. Mind you, there's an entrance fee so don't leave this place without enjoying the thrill. There's an official photographer who takes photo but you will need to pay later of course.
  • Loboc River Cruise and Lunch is one of the most mandatory things to do in Bohol. After all, who wouldn't want to eat his/her food inside a ferry/boat/banca while cruising in one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines? You can even choose a night cruise and get serenaded by Loboc Youth ambassadors.
  • Baclayon Church or the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the second oldest stone church in the Philippines. It was built in 17th century out of coral stones and millions of egg whites. Please be reminded that Baclayon church is entrance free but the museum isn't.
  • Alona Beach is a strtch of white, powdery shore located in the island of Panglao, Bohol. It's world-famous so don't be surprised especially during peak season you'll think you're in Bali or Phuket. The best part to stay is of course at the beachfront but prepare to spend more.
  • Mag-aso Waterfalls was damaged by earthquake in 2013.  If you have extra time and budget for the additional tour fee, go ahead and see the area. Notice the houses damaged by the quake.  We did not pay any entrance fee since there's no one at the reception - it's like a ghost town.
  • There's a store and a couple of vendors across the other end of Sipatan bridge - try their roasted banana cue.  If you're lucky, you might meet Buko King, he peels the skin of coconut using his teeth
  •  I don't recommend our accommodation as well. :(

Balicasag Island Bohol

  • There's a smaller boat you can rent for a tour in Balicasag Island. Please be reminded that motorized boats can't go around the protected area. The fee of  Php 250 per pax is only for the fish sanctuary area. That means  Php100 will be given to the local municipal office and Php 150 for the boat/guide. There are other tourist spots in Balicasag Island like the turtle area and giant clams area where they charge another Php 250 per pax per spot. Please look for Kuya Rey Lusterio and ask for a discount, he gave us a discounted price for only Php 450 per pax.
  • Joiners for the motorized boat cost Php350 to Php 400.
  • The ideal time to go on dolphin hunting in Balicasag tour is 6 am.
  • Islos di Francesco (formerly Virgin Island) is a private island dedicated by its owner to St. Padre Pio. They don't charge anything from visitors, even their store (food/drinks) has no price for the items they sell. Again, please give out of the kindness of your heart. All proceeds go to the church :)

Dumaguete to Siquijor | Ultimate Ferry Guide

Tarzan swings are all over the Philippines. Here I'm swimming over a turquiose pool and waterfall in Siquijor

Want to know how to get from Dumaguete to Siquijor?

There are a few options to get from Dumaguete to Siquijor and all are by some form of sea transport. For most tourists visiting Siquijor the best option is the fast craft because our of all the ferries it is the most reliable, comfortable and also the fastest option.

The Dumaguete to Siquijor ferries and fast-crafts operate everyday from the early morning until the evening.

Dumaguete to Siquijor – Ferries

The fastest and easiest way to get to Siquijor from Dumaguete is by fast-craft. In most cases this is the option that both foreign and local tourists prefer. The journey usually takes less than 1 hour and onboard you have the option to sit outside or inside with the comfort of air condition.

However there is only 1 departure in the morning at 7:20am and another in the evening at 7:10pm. So it’s always a good idea to → reserve seats in advance. If you’re coming from Moalboal, then the evening fast-craft is perfect because you should arrive in Dumaguete by 5:00pm or 6:00pm as long as you leave Moalboal by noon.

Use the search box to find ferry tickets.

An gorgeous golden sunset in Siquijor

There’s a few other options to get from Dumaguete to Siquijor. Some options are slower but tend to be cheaper. And there is also the option to go from Dumaguete to Siquijor with your car onboard a RORO boat. Below are all the options.

Dumaguete to Siquijor Ferry Schedule

Best option for tourists.

For most tourists visiting Siquijor from Dumaguete the best option would be the 7:20 am fast-craft. Choosing this option means you’ll be in Siquijor at around 8:20 am giving you an entire day to explore the island. Also, if you’re staying in Dumaguete and just want to visit Siquijor for the day, you should choose this option and then come back with the 6:00 pm fast craft.

Fast crafts depart Dumaguete Port at 7:20 am and 7:10 pm. You will need to be at the port in Dumaguete at least 30 minutes pre departure. That’s because you’ll need to do a sort of check-in and show your online booking.

If you chose open air or tourists class there is a 15kg baggage allowance. For business class you’ll get 20kg baggage allowance. If you have excess weight you may need to pay a fee. → book tickets here

Getting to Siquijor from Dumaguete is done on board this fast ferry

Dumaguete to Siquijor – Cheapest Option

The cheapest option from Dumaguete to Siquijor is via the ordinary ferry. This option has a scheduled travel time of around 90 minutes depending on the sea conditions.

You should be aware that this is a fully enclosed boat. It’s small and seating is a bit packed and not particularly comfortable. Windows which should help circulate the air are closed at departure because otherwise the waves would come inside. This results in a hot, humid and sticky 1 hour 30 minute boat ride.

Tickets can be bought directly at the port in Dumaguete (online booking isn’t available) . If you are already in Dumaguete, then I suggest you buy your tickets a day ahead or just go early in the morning and buy whatever tickets are available.

Passengers boarding. small boat

San Juan is the main tourist area on the island and is the best area to stay in Siquijor. Below are the TOP 3 recommended places to stay on the beach in San Juan. You’ll be within walking distance to many places to eat, drink, chill and you can stumble out of bed and go take an early morning dip.

Best places to stay for any Budget in Siquijor ⤵

→further information about the ferries from Dumaguete to Siquijor is below.

If you’re on a budget and want to save money, my suggestion is to use the RORO (roll on – roll off) ferry. It’s a big vessel used to transport cars so it’s relatively slower than the fast craft and even the smaller passenger ferries. Tickets can only be bought from the ticket booth at Dumaguete port. Should you wish to go by car, the ticket needs to be purchased a day ahead of travel date.

While the the travel time is around 2 hours, it’s definitely a lot more enjoyable than the cheap ferries to Siquijor. At least you can enjoy a nice sea breeze on your way along with the views.

Montenegro Shipping Lines operates daily with departures at 7:00am – 10:00am – 2:00pm – 6:00pm.

Where is the Port of Dumaguete

The port of Dumaguete is located on the Northern end of Dumaguete promenade and is within walking distance from most of the tourist accommodations.

Infographic of map of Dumaguete

If your accommodation is a bit too far away or you have luggage, you can wave down a tricycle. The cost for a tricycle will be anything between PHP40 and 100 ($0.83 – $2.08) depending on which part of town your accommodation is.

When entering the port of Dumaguete or while purchasing your tickets from the booth, you’ll be asked to pay a terminal fee. This is a pretty standard thing in all ports in the Philippines.

The terminal fee at the port of Dumaguete is ₱25 ($0.45) per person.

Siquijor is a big island and getting from one side to another can take over an hour. So it’s important to know the different options and areas that are best for you. Having the information about these areas will help you book an accommodation with ease and more confidently.

A beautiful church of St Francis of Assisi in Siquijor

San Juan is the most popular part of Siquijor and is where 80% of tourists stay. Here you’ll be in the middle of everything with lots of restaurants to choose from, beach bars and accommodation for any budget. Most of the famous waterfalls are within a 10 to 30 minute drive from here. The most popular accommodations are literally on the beach offering direct access to the colorful underwater Tubod Marine Sanctuary. ↳ View all San Juan deals.

Here are our TOP 3 recommendations for all budgets:

Budget: Bougainvillea guesthouse Mid Range: Apo Diver Beach Resort High End: Coco Grove Beach Resort

Note: These accommodation are all beachfront and tend to sell out. → Booking ahead is recommended.

A resort facing the ocean lined with waving palm trees

Lazi is the region where a number of waterfalls are located including Cambugahay falls. There’s a hanful of accommodation to choose from and the town is quiet with a limited amount of dining option. Keep in mind that you will still need transport to reach the waterfalls as accommodation options aren’t that close. ↳ View deals in Lazi .

Larena is a more laid back town on the west side of Siquijor. Here you’ll get to experience the more authentic side of living in Siquijor. Accommodation also tends to be cheaper and there’s a lot of local eateries. You’ll also find a Jollibee in Larena. Larena is also the port area and is home to the beautiful St. Francis of Assisi Church. ↳ View all deals in Larena
