Unit 7: Concert Tours and Musical Performances (Plus: Fanchants and Lightsticks)

Watch BTS in concert by finding these live performances online or on DVD.

bts red bullet tour singapore

Last Updated on March 25, 2024 by BTS 101

Want to see BTS live? So does most of the world, so good luck getting tickets. But happily, a lot of their past concerts are available online (some free, some paid, some…obtainable through questionable means).

In addition, BTS really brings it when it comes time for televised appearances. In particular, they have turned the MAMA, MMA, and Golden Disc Awards – three of the major Asian music award shows – into their own private mini-concerts in recent years, featuring a medley of old and new songs with seriously spectacular sets and visuals. Most of these are available on YouTube and you should go watch them all immediately.

Before BTS goes on stage, they usually gather as a circle of 7 to do a little cheer. It varies a bit but the most common one is when RM says, “Bangtan, bangtan…” and everyone answers with “Bang-bangtan!” Fun fact: you might notice during these cheers that SUGA always looks away while everyone else looks in.

Fanchants and Lightsticks

When watching BTS performing in front of a live audience, you might notice two key things:

Fanchants : In Korea and other places in Asia, it’s considered rude to sing along at a concert, because the audience paid to hear the artist, not you! But because audiences do like to participate, Kpop production companies often create “official fanchants” – approved responses and yells that the audience is allowed to do at appropriate breaks in the song.

So, you’ll hear the whole audience being pretty quiet, but then suddenly yelling the same word at exactly the same place in the song. Those are fanchants! You can find them online here and here is a YouTube channel where you can hear them as well..

BTS has one famous fanchant that appears at the start of most of their big hits, where the audience chants the names of the members in order. “Kim Namjoon…Kim Seokjin…Min Yoongi…Jung Hoseok…Park Jimin…Kim Taehyung…Jeon Jungkook…BTS!”

This performance of MIC Drop is a great one to watch if you want to see the opening fanchant and other fanchants in action.

Lightsticks : When a kPop band gets popular enough to know they are going to be around for a while – usually after a couple of years and a few hit songs – their production company will introduce a lightstick – kind of like a flashlight that can change colours and respond via bluetooth during concerts. Audience members usually have these and shake them rhythmically during concerts.

The BTS lightstick is known as the “ARMY Bomb” and looks like a little light-up bomb on a stick. It was introduced at the Bangtan Begins: Red Bullet concert in Seoul in 2015. Originally it could only light up with white light, and at the Third Muster, as a surprise for the band, BTS staff members gave the audience a sheer purple cover to put over their bombs to turn them purple. V loved this moment so much he introduced the now iconic BTS phrase “I purple you,” meaning I will love you infinitely, like the colour purple at the end of the rainbow. These days, new ARMY bombs can change to lots of different colours, are Bluetooth enabled, and can sync their colour changes to videos and online concerts – and also very costly !

Past Concerts, and Where to Find Them

For a full listing of every live performance by BTS, consult this Wikipedia page .

As a quick summary, here are their major tours – including the Festas, Musters, and Fanmeetings, which were listed in the last unit .

One word you might hear thrown around when fans talk about concerts is “ ment “. This refers to the talking parts between songs and especially to the final speeches each member gives at the end of each concert.

Notable Award Show and Television Specials/Performances

There are too many to count! If you’re looking for something specific or just have a LOT of time on your hands, you can find a comprehensive list of EVERYTHING over at the BTS Content Index .

Here are some must-watch favourites – well, it started as a list of must-watch favourites but has really gotten out of hand. So I’ve bolded performances that were truly legendary and great for people just getting into BTS.

Its world tour extension began on June 6, 2015 in Malaysia and toured Australia, North America and Latin America before ending in Hong Kong that August. In all, the entire tour attracted 80,000 spectators at 18 cities in 13 countries. [2]

[3] The two shows sold out within 2 minutes, prompting the addition of a third show in South Korea followed by dates in Japan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. [4] [5]

On May 7, 2015, BTS announced a full-scale world tour extension, titled 2015 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet, starting June 6 at the Mega Star Arena in Malaysia followed by July dates in Australia and the United States . [1]

Shows in Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City were all sold out in the matter of minutes. BTS performed for over 12,500 [9] fans for the US leg alone. The two concerts in Melbourne and Sydney were also sold out, [10] despite the fact that the cities were located in a place that traditionally did not experience that level of success when it comes to selling out venues for K-pop acts. In Brazil, similar success happened. The original venue would have a maximum capacity of 2,000 people, however due to high demand the promoters transferred the concert to a venue with more than twice the capacity. [11]

According to Billboard , BTS made their concert memorable with their outstanding performances. [12]

"A staple of K-pop concerts is the meticulously rehearsed choreography and CD-quality vocals prepared for every performance of the night. For their New York City debut, BTS did that, of course, but also showed a more relaxed and freer side of themselves that made the show that much more memorable -- even with an abrupt finish." —   Jeff Benjamin of Billboard [12]

The following set list is obtained from the show on July 10, 2015 in Sydney, Australia. It is not intended to represent all dates throughout the tour extension. [10]

  • If I Ruled The World
  • Boyz With Fun
  • ↑ The first half of the tour ended on May 8, 2015; however a separately named world tour extension, called "2015 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet", was eventually added. [1]

In 2014, BTS embarked on The Red Bullet Tour , their first headlining tour. From October 17, 2014 to March 8, 2015, and from June 6 to August 29, 2015, BTS performed songs from 2 Cool 4 Skool,   O!RUL8,2?, Skool Luv Affair,  and  Dark & Wild  in a total of 13 countries.

Since the ARMY Bomb wasn’t released until the second leg of the tour, ARMYs at the Seoul, Kobe, Tokyo, Manila, Singapore, Bangkok, and Taipei shows used the Red Bullet Light Stick instead.

This temporary lightstick featured a grenade-like design on one end and a yellow light on the other. Unlike today’s ARMY Bomb, it couldn’t change colors, and it didn’t have high tech capabilities like Bluetooth syncing. Not to mention, it was much smaller.

Fans who attended  The Red Bullet  tour will remember small venues lit up in yellow. In total, The Red Bullet tour brought in 80,000 concertgoers. In 2019, BTS sold out The Rose Bowl, a stadium with a capacity of more than 90,000, in one night alone.

BTS’ Suga in Singapore: A ‘baby’ ARMY’s account of the K-pop star's Agust D concert

It's not the whole BTS but CNA Lifestyle’s Izza Haziqah was just as excited to finally see one of the boys live. Here's what went down during the first night of Suga’s solo shows as Agust D at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, which runs from Jun 16 to 19.

When BTS announced that they would be going on hiatus in the middle of 2022, I was heartbroken like every other member of the K-pop group's ARMY.

With Jin and J-Hope doing their military service in South Korea  – and V, Jungkook, RM, Jimin and Suga to follow suit  – I knew that the next BTS concert as a full septet was going to take a while.

They'd been to Singapore twice  – way back in 2014 for the Red Bullet tour and in 2019, where they performed to a sold out crowd at the National Stadium for their  Love Yourself world tour.

But as a self-professed 27-year-old "baby ARMY" who only relatively recently joined the fandom (the uplifting messages of their music was a comfort during the pandemic), I wanted to experience what it was like  – even if it wasn't the full band for now.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jin of BTS (@jin)

Needless to say, I was beyond thrilled when it was announced that Suga (and as his non-BTS rapping alter-ego Agust D) was performing  at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Jun 17 and 18, with a later added show on the 16th .

This being my first BTS-related show, I had little to no idea what was to come   – from the mad rush for tickets (where my ARMY friends and I eventually managed to secure tickets for the Friday show) to the exciting sights and vibes both inside and outside the venue.

FANS, MERCH AND WELFARE PACKS

I thought I was early when I arrived outside the Indoor Stadium grounds at three in the afternoon, but apparently not.

Some had already been patiently queueing up from as early as 4am that day to  get their hands on official tour merchandise, enduring the scorching heat with their umbrellas and portable fans.

Elsewhere, fans had also gathered since 8am around Kallang Wave Mall to distribute free BTS- and Suga-themed goodies such as photo cards, keychains and pins, and lanyards. I befriended two of them, Rahidah Rashid, 28, and Justine J, 27, who had dozens of photo cards to share with any fan who wanted them.

“We just love to share our love for the boys,” said Rahidah. “I want to embody the messages that BTS shares – looking out for one another and positivity.”

There were also those who shared welfare packs that included tissues (for not blood but sweat and tears), lozenges (for the hoarse throats because of screaming), sweets (to keep one busy while waiting in the queue), and even earplugs (also for the screaming).

Though the performance was held in Singapore, the crowd was notably international. I got to make friends with fellow ARMYs who flew from places such as Hong Kong, the Philippines and Indonesia.

“I tried the Jakarta and Bangkok show, but could only make it for Singapore,” said Camille Fernandez, a 37-year-old fan from Manila who came with two others. “I’m very happy to be here, and though I’ve been a fan since 2016, it’ll be my first time seeing one of the boys live.”

NO SUCH THING AS A BAD SEAT?

I wasn't able to score standing tickets but my friends and I were perfectly happy with our seats somewhere in Section 208, with a side view of the whole show.

Despite the angle and distance from the stage, I was still able to enjoy myself a lot, thanks to the  large screens on either side, which gave us pretty clear views of our beloved Min Yoon-gi. And since the Indoor Stadium is smaller than, say the National Stadium, it was still a cosy and relatively intimate show.

For the next two hours, Suga dished out around 19 songs, a mix of hip-hop and rap and some R&B thrown in. He performed renditions of BTS tracks such as Life Goes On, Trivia: Seesaw, and the mash-up of his parts from classic BTS rap songs such as Ddaeng and UGH!.

This being primarily an Agust D concert, his setlist comprised mainly his songs as a solo artiste, such as Haegum, Daechwita, AMYGDALA, Give It To Me and his self-titled track.

The K-pop star, who was supported by an able live band and a host of backup dancers, appeared to be under the weather on Friday night – coughing occasionally and sipping from a cup in-between songs and banter – but he never forgot to interact with the audience throughout the night.

Speaking in both English and Korean, he mentioned how he had “missed Singapore” since the last time BTS was here four years ago.

At one point, he playfully borrowed the phones of some very lucky fans to capture a video selfie of himself singing. He also gamely acknowledged a pair of male ARMYs who fervently sought his attention throughout the entire show.

Being seated in my section not only allowed me to see the artiste from different angles, it also allowed me to see the whole stadium lit up with ARMY "bombs" – the official lightstick name for BTS concerts – and phone flashlights as everyone belted and bopped along to the K-pop star.

Which reminded me that part of the appeal of watching a concert isn't just how physically close you are to the artiste you admire (although that's always a treat) but the whole environment and sharing that love for the same music with many others.

After all that, two hours just wasn't enough for this baby ARMY but of course, sadly, Suga had to bid farewell.

The boys are set to return as a full group in 2025 once all members have finished their military service. When you think about it, two years doesn't sound that bad. Until then, ARMYs old and new will have to wait for what's yet to come   –  and if one of them does decide to also go on a solo tour, we'll be there.

An Explosive Night with BTS: The Red Bullet In Malaysia

For Malaysian ARMYs, BTS ’ first official visit to Malaysian shores was an extremely special and memorable one for the fans and boys alike – the concert was not only held a week before BTS’ 2-year anniversary, it was also the first stop to kick off  Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet World Tour!

Held at the Mega Star Arena on June 6 th , Rap Monster , Jin, Suga , J-Hope , Jimin , V and Jung Kook certainly set ARMYs’ hearts ablaze in the 2-hour long concert; even the slight drizzle did nothing to dampen the passion and excitement of the fans!

Despite having a busy schedule the day before with BTS’ Hello Session with fans and press conference, the members were pumped with energy throughout the night. Decked in suave black suits, the boys kicked off the Malaysian leg of their Red Bullet tour with the intense and powerful N.O, before heading straight into We Are Bulletproof Pt 2 .

Taking a breather afterwards, BTS introduced themselves with “ Apa Khabar? We Are BTS!”, which was followed by the members’ self-introductions. Leader Rap Monster welcomed fans to The Red Bullet, and thanked them for attending the show.

Without missing a beat, BTS then delved into an explosive performance of  We On and Hip Hop Lover , with their infectious energy and spot-on vocals driving the crowd wild.  Shrugging off their blazers, the boys begun to perform the more soothing, emotional tracks featured in their repertoire, highlighting their vocals with softer songs like Let Me Know and Rain .

Soon after, maknae JungKook disappeared backstage, and arrived on a bed for the next song, Blanket Kick. The boys then quickly huddled with each other under the covers for the track, playing among themselves on the sofa and bed props, while displaying their cute sides with lots of fan-service amidst the passionate screams of ARMYs. BTS then quickly fell into formation for the soothing and sweet Just One Day , a fan-favorite that soon had the crowd fawning over their performance.

Rap Monster drove the crowd into a frenzy when he revealed that BTS was going to make a member do ‘stunningly cute aegyo’, and the members played a few games of Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who would do so! A final battle between Jin and Rap Monster saw Jin losing the game, and the fans screamed in anticipation for his aegyo, which Jin promptly showcased during the next song in their set, Look Here .  BTS then serenaded the crowd with Outro: Propose , with Jin holding a rose throughout the sweet performance.

After another interlude VCR, BTS returned to the stage with an energetic performance of their debut track, No More Dream, followed by the catchy Tomorrow. JungKook then asked fans if they knew the lyrics to the next song to be performed, Miss Right, and it was answered with a resounding yes from the excited crowd. Jimin encouraged everyone present to singalong with them.

For Miss Right and I Like You , BTS thoughtfully prepared a VCR with romanized lyrics for the crowd to follow, presented in cute, colorful visuals to match the upbeat vibes of the two songs. The fan-chants were loud and synchronized, putting a smile on the BTS members’ faces as everyone sang together.

BTS then returned to their hip-hop roots with If I Ruled The World, and Rap Monster, J-Hope and Suga had the crowd up on their feet with their slick yet fierce spit-fire rapping in the third installment of the Cypher series, KILLER .  The boys then delved immediately into Cypher Part II: Triptych, which quickly transitioned to War of Hormone; Danger following suit.

20150606_BTTS_TRB9

Rap Monster then revealed it was going to be the first time BTS will be performing their latest title track, I NEED U, live in their concert tour, much to the delight of the crowd . The last song of the night, Boy In Luv, was received with loud fan-chants and the white glow of Army Bomb light-sticks in the air. The cries for the encore stages resonated through the hall as the boys left the stage, with the crowd wanting more from the group.

A heartwarming VCR detailing the BTS members’ journey, from pre-debut up to till present was shown, including footage from their debut stage and first ever fanmeet. ARMYs were touched by the gesture, and the video showed the never-ending support the boys received from their fans and how they were grateful for the love they received. BTS then made a final appearance for their encore stages, performing Path, Fun Boys and Rise of Bangtan .

The boys then relayed their thanks to the fans for coming, with Jin mentioning how lovely he thought their fans were, while Suga told Malaysian ARMYs that they were ‘ Bagus !’ (great in Malay). Both Jimin and JungKook expressed their love and thanks to the fans, with the latter telling the audience that they were ‘ Bagus ’ as well, delighting the crowd. Jimin taught V to say ‘ Saya Cintamu ’ (I love you in Malay), and V was unaware that BTS had such a huge following in Malaysia.

J-Hope, saddened that the concert was ending so soon, said his thanks while pretending to cry, his gesture eliciting ‘awws’ from the crowd. Rap Monster replied that he would not forget the support Malaysian ARMYs showcased during the concert, and thanked the fans for making special memories with them, as Malaysia was the first stop on the second half of BTS’ The Red Bullet Tour and that it was the first time that they performed I NEED U in their concert. He also told fans to stay tuned to BTS’ future projects.

20150606_BTTS_TRB16

For the final stage of the night, BTS performed an encore of I NEED U , bowing and thanking fans for the memorable night they shared together, ending the concert on a high note. Throughout the concert, BTS interacted with the fans simply with a mix of English and Bahasa Malaysia, bringing a sense of intimacy to fan interactions during the concert, showing the effort BTS had put in in order to communicate with their ARMY.

During the very end of the concert, BTS revealed a teaser regarding Part III of their tour on the screens, heightening ARMYs anticipation for BTS’ return to Malaysia.  With amazing performances and fan-services throughout the night, BTS definitely delivered flawlessly and gave ARMYs a wonderful night to remember.
