Last month, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May finally returned to our screens with the highly anticipated The Grand Tour .

The motoring show - the trio’s first since leaving Top Gear - was met with relative acclaim across the board, critics praising the presenters’ chemistry.

However, following the fourth episode reaching the Amazon Prime customers, there was controversy. The company decided to heavily censor the episode in India, cutting down the hour long length to just 30 minutes.

Censorship is common in the country, with sex scenes often blurred out or cut entirely, but - with just over half a programme being cut - Amazon has received several complaints about The Grand Tour in particular, one report calling the censorship ‘heavy handed’. The segment in question that was cut included 'cow body organs' being placed on a car.

Amazon has since defended the censorship, revealing that the cuts were made with ‘Indian cultural sensitivities in mind’, cows being held in high stature by numerous Indian communities.

  • James May: 'I don't want to be doing The Grand Tour in five years'

Amazon is a responsible company and we are here to entertain the Indian customer with award-winning content from the US along with blockbusters from Indian and regional makers," the company told Mashable India in a statement. "We will keep Indian cultural sensitivities in mind while offering this content to customers.”

Meanwhile, The Grand Tour made headlines last week after reports detailed how the show was ‘the most illegally downloaded TV show in history’.

Censorship in India resulted in Episode 4 of The Grand Tour being cut in half

the grand tour india

It has been revealed that Amazon has censored the fourth episode of The Grand Tour for Amazon Prime customers who reside in India, in an effort to avoid controversy. The company decided to heavily censor the episode in India, cutting down the hour long length to just 30 minutes.

I already don’t like my country. This makes me hate it more .

Brilliant confirmed Christmas Namibia 2 part special on 30/31 of December . Glad we didn’t have to wait until episode 11 and 12

WTF is wrong with the bloody Indian government just because it’s got scenes of cows bones which were taken from restaurants doesn’t mean that it’s racist arseholes. Many Indians eat cows why don’t you call that racist bastards . Everything British is bad for India nowadays. How the mighty have fallen

' src=

I find this censorship unnecessary because Discovery shows Man vs Wild without any editing in India which you cannot watch while eating. Don’t get me wrong I really like Man vs Wild.

Amazon fear too much and that is unnecessary. The number of people who watch Grand tour in India is very less. Watching shows via the Internet is still infancy in India.

I am an Indian and I am not offended by this. I am also a vegetarian. Watched this via torrent and its okay (I also have an Amazon prime account).

Here's Why 'The Grand Tour' Is Being Censored In India

A controversial episode will only be half as long in India.

Veyron 16.4

We're not even halfway through the first season of "The Grand Tour" and it's already managed to stir up copious amounts of controversy. A scene showing how to smuggle migrants into the UK didn't go down too well, and PETA is furious over an insensitive depiction of animals. The animal rights organization didn't find scenes with Clarkson parading a car constructed out of animal carcasses very amusing. Now The Telegraph is reporting that Amazon plans to heavily censor the episode that drew PETA's ire in order to not offend the Indian market.

The original episode ran for an hour, but with the edits that running time will drop to around 30 minutes. Censorship isn't uncommon in India: sex scenes are often blurred out or completely cut. However, the butchering of this episode seems a bit excessive. The environmental car challenge must have been removed in its entirety, but viewers won't miss much in all honesty . The Telegraph said that Amazon received complaints about the censorship, calling it "heavy handed." However, Amazon has defended the action, saying that the cuts were made with "Indian cultural sensitivities in mind" as cows are seen as sacred animals in some communities.

"Amazon is a responsible company and we are here to entertain the Indian customer with award-winning content from the US along with blockbusters from Indian and regional makers," the company told Mashable in a statement. "We will keep Indian cultural sensitivities in mind while offering this content to customers." At any rate, censoring content probably won't reduce the number of people desperately downloading "The Grand Tour" illegally . To us this makes sense but we'd love to know what Clarkson, Hammond and May feel. The trio seemed to love the idea of working for Amazon because of all the freedom they would have. Granted India is just one market but it's a big one and censorship is still censorship even on a small scale.

That being said, Amazon should continue censoring "The Grand Tour," but only certain bits. Feel free to cut out the next few Celebrity Brain Crash bits and test drives featuring the American. If you ask us those segments are much more offensive than anything that Clarkson and company could ever say or do.

Amazon Prime’s Censorship Of The Grand Tour In India Reportedly Cut An Episode In Half

For Amazon Prime users in India, The Grand Tour ’s fourth episode reportedly wasn’t nearly as long as the rest of them—in fact, it was apparently less than half of the length it should have been due to censorship from Amazon for the Indian market.

According to recent reports from Mashable   and other websites, IMDb lists the fourth episode of The Grand Tour , the former Top Gear hosts’ new Amazon Prime show, as 30 minutes in India compared to 62 minutes without censorship. Jalopnik could not locate the IMDb link to back this information up, but the screenshot to the left comes from Shifting Lanes and shows the fourth episode being listed on Amazon Prime as 30 minutes and 23 seconds in length.

Related Content

Mashable reports that The Grand Tour isn’t the only streaming program that undergoes censorship by Amazon for India, but that sources who wished to remain anonymous said a majority of the program cuts are only a couple of seconds.

But Mashable reports that Amazon cut the scenes showing a vehicle with various parts made of a cow’s organs, as the cow is a widely respected animal in many Indian cultures. Here’s what Amazon had to say in response to the censorship, according to Mashable :

“Amazon Prime Video offers the largest selection of movies and TV shows of any OTT video service in India and give customers the choice on what to watch. Amazon is a responsible company and we are here to entertain the Indian customer with award-winning content from the US along with blockbusters from Indian and regional makers,” the company said in a statement to Mashable India. “We will keep Indian cultural sensitivities in mind while offering this content to customers,” the company added.

Mashable reports that most of the other Amazon censorship for the Indian market is much less extensive, explaining that some stills with nudity have been blurred. From Mashable :

The vast majority of content on Amazon Prime Video for India is untouched, sources at the industry and company added. Less than one percent of the catalog has been censored, another person said.

It should be noted that Top Gear wasn’t the best about keeping everybody happy around the world , with World War II, Hitler, Hispanics, workers on strike in Britain, Asian people and residents of Argentina being just a few of the subjects of Jeremy Clarkson’s more offensive jokes during his time hosting the show. Using a lot of caution during censorship could be to keep that from happening under Amazon.

The report went on to say that television censorship in India sometimes takes place in accordance with local law. But if the Amazon Prime customers in India are unhappy with the censorship, it’s not like they’d be the first to download the show illegally .

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘James May: Our Man In India’ On Prime Video, Where The Wry ‘Grand Tour’ Host Makes His Way Across The Subcontinent

Where to stream:.

  • James May: Our Man in India

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Grand Tour: Sand Job’ on Prime Video, Where James May, Richard Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson Drive DIY Rally Cars Through Northwest Africa

Stream it or skip it: ‘the grand tour: eurocrash’ on prime video, where the guys road trip from poland to slovenia in three ridiculous cars, stream it or skip it: ‘the grand tour presents: a massive hunt’ on amazon prime video, where the guys hunt for buried treasure in madagascar, new movies + shows to watch this weekend: netflix’s ‘ma rainey’s black bottom’ + more.

James May has become one of Amazon’s go-to docuseries hosts because he presents a combination of skills that are actually pretty rare. He’s funny, of course, but he’s also curious and humble, emphasizing the fact that he’s just a guy who’s there to learn and ready to be fascinated by what he sees. In the third season of his travelogue series, May travels across India to see how people live in the amazingly diverse country.

JAMES MAY: OUR MAN IN INDIA : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A shot of Mumbai Harbor. A boat comes in, and we see the loping, grey-haired figure of James May walking through the port as he gets off the boat.

The Gist: Like in the first two seasons of the Our Man In… series, James May — co-host of The Grand Tour and the original iteration of Top Gear , among dozens of other shows — will travel through India and try to get more of an in-depth picture of the daily lives of the people there. Unlike the first two seasons, where he traveled the length of both Japan and Italy, he will be traversing what he calls “the most colorful country on the planet” from its west to its east coast, starting in Mumbai.

As in every season of this series, May is assisted by local residents who help him navigate his surroundings. In Mumbai, he meets up with comedian Aditi Mittal, who has put together a stand-up showcase of the city’s young comedians, many of whom point out the tall Brit and make colonization jokes. They go to the comedy club in what May calls “the wheel-deficient auto rickshaw,” and Aditi claims she’s one of the most relaxed people in the city because she doesn’t know how to drive.

He then goes to Dharavi, which is known as “the slum of Mumbai,” a “rabbit warren” of buildings, semi-paved roads and about 800,000 people packed in just over one square mile. It was where Slumdog Millionaire was shot, and May is amazed at how industrious and entrepreneurial the people who live there are. He finds a business that melts down junk plastic for recycling, a place that makes thousands of “disposable” clay cups for drinking tea per day, and a leather factory. He also carries around a 360-degree camera to shoot the bustling area as he tries to find his way around.

After May and Aditi visit a man who paints old-school Bollywood posters at a classic movie theater, then gets his fortune read, he takes a 500-mile ride to the city of Udaipur, where he braves a pop-up wind and rain storm while watching a master kite flier. Then the holiday of Holi gets underway with bonfires set throughout the city, and then a celebration in the streets the next day, where he and the other people celebrating throw around dye powder, covering May, his crew, and the camera in a rainbow of colors.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? The Our Man In… series is reminiscent of travel series from the late Anthony Bourdain or even shows like The Reluctant Traveler , with the wry, self-deprecating sense of humor May has displayed on the shows he’s hosted.

Our Take: May fully admits that India, especially in cities like Mumbai, “always seems to be trying to beat you up” if you’re a Westerner. We’re just not use to the pace and the chaos that is just everyday life for Indians. But, like many Brits, the country is an endless source of fascination to him, and with a population of over 1.4 billion people, there is a massive amount of diversity in both the population as well as the geography and what the country has to offer.

The India season is only three episodes, compared to the six episodes in the seasons he traveled in Japan and Italy. Given that, despite May’s west-to-east trip this time around vs. the north-south orientation of his first two trips, there’s still a whole lot of ground to cover. Because of the shorter season, it seems like there may be fun moments and worthy parts of the country that never see the light of day.

What has always been the best part of the series, though, is May and his self-deprecating manner. He’s always aware that he’s the visitor, and he tends to be respectful of the people he’s walking around with, as well as the people he encounters in his travels. His jibes are always self-directed, and it’s evident that he’s not just using the scenery and people as props for his own self-aggrandizement. That’s not always the case with travel shows like this, and this humble approach always comes off better than the alternative.

Sex and Skin: None. Parting Shot: May, as he’s looking at a sunset over Udaipur, tells the audience he’s flattered by their attention to the show, then jokes that if the viewers is bingeing the show, “I’ll see you in about 15 seconds.”

Jeremy Clarkson is banned from entering India

Jeremy Clarkson is banned from entering India

Jeremy listed three countries he says he can't visit.

Jess Battison

Jeremy Clarkson is banned from entering the country of India.

The 63-year-old recently revealed the places around the world he isn't allowed to visit.

During an episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire , which he presents, Clarkson listed the countries where he is definitely not welcome.

It might not come as a total surprise to learn he's made the news big time there because of his jokes.

This conversation all came about because of one of the gameshow questions.

"The Hindu god Ganesh is traditionally depicted as having the head of which animal?" asked Clarkson, of a god widely worshipped by Indians.

As the contestant got pretty confused by his options, he actually decided to request help from the host - before even using up his lifeline of asking the audience.

Jeremy named three countries he says he can't enter.

This meant The Grand Tour star had to prove he didn't have access to the answer, as the question actually ironically reminded him of his ban from the country.

Clarkson helped get the answer right - elephant, if you're interested - and then went on to talk about the list of countries that definitely don't want him around.

"But weirdly I’m actually banned from India..um..I..I really am, I tried to go there last year and was refused a visa," he said, as the audience laughed at him.

“So that’s Turkey, Argentina…not that anybody would want to go back there and India.”

There's not a definite answer as to why Clarkson's wasn't allowed in the South Asian country but he did go there in 2011 for the Top Gear India Special, with a 'trade mission'.

While some viewers may have found it hilarious, his sense of humour didn't go down all to well with the people in their Government. But there's also a chance his visa was denied simply because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It seems much of Jeremy's problems in the countries stem from his time on Top Gear.

With Turkey, there's a possibility Clarkson's ban is down to another of the Top Gear specials, when they went to the Middle East back in 2010.

He, Hammond and May didn't particularly hang around in Turkey but some of their comments about roads and travel advice upset the country.

A popular news channel there, NTV, said 'exaggerated remarks' were made and the programme: "Disparaged Turkey. The presenters wore bulletproof vests and helmets and said that the southeast of Turkey should be considered a war zone.”

Clarkson's problems with Argentina may be a little more clear for Top Gear fans as the Patagonia Special in 2014 featured some rather memorable scenes.

As his vehicle, he used a Porsche with a 'H982 FKL' number plate which was very badly received by locals.

Although it was apparently coincidental, locals decided it was in reference to the 1982 Falklands War and during their journey, the car was attacked with stones and even pickaxes.

So it doesn't look like the people of India or Argentina and Turkey can expect to see Clarkson zooming by anytime soon.

Manerba del Garda - Livigno (Mottolino)

Giro d'Italia 2024

the grand tour india

Stage 15, arguably the hardest of the entire Giro, sees the start of a tough week of mountains. The route from Manerba del Garda to Livigno amounts to 220 kilometres and takes in an elevation gain of 5,700 metres.

Planimetria/Map Stage 16 Giro d'Italia 2024

Livigno - Santa Cristina Val Gardena/St. Christina in Gröden (Monte Pana)

A high mountain fraction broken up by the Adige and Isarco valleys, basically a 3-part stage: mountain, with Foscagno Stelvio (this year’s Cima Coppi, the highest point of the race); plain, from Prato allo Stevio until shortly after Bolzano; mountain, with the ascent of Passo Pinei and the finish in Val Gardena.

Planimetria/Map Stage 17 Giro d'Italia 2024

Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Gröden - Passo del Brocon

Intense climbing stage with brutal amount of elevation gain despite its short distance. The route climbs from the start on the Passo Sella, followed by a flat section in the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys all the way to Predazzo.

Planimetria/Map Stage 18 Giro d'Italia 2024

Fiera di Primiero - Padova

This stage features a single, rather modest climb in the opening half of the route (the KOM of Lamon) followed by about 150 km of slightly downhill false flat.

Planimetria/Map Stage 19 Giro d'Italia 2024

Mortegliano - Sappada

The stage begins by riding up the Tagliamento Valley, heading north and crossing the towns of San Daniele del Friuli, Forgaria nel Friuli and Peonis. After Tolmezzo, the succession of climbs leading to the finish line begins: Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Cima Sappada.

the grand tour india

Alpago - Bassano del Grappa

Relatively flat opening at Lake Santa Croce, heading downhill to Vittorio Veneto and the Muro di Ca' del Poggio, which leads into the Prosecco area. After crossing the Piave River, the route reaches the slopes of the brutal Monte Grappa, which will be tackled twice.

Planimetria/Map Stage 21 Giro d'Italia 2024

Roma - Roma

The final stage is divided into two parts: the first is the peloton’s outing to Lido di Castel Fusano on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's 16 kilometres one way and another 16 kilometres back before the stage enters its second and final part, the finishing circuit (8 laps) of 9.5 kilometres, which very much resembles last year’s lap through the eternal city.

Planimetria/Map Stage 1 Giro d'Italia 2024

Venaria Reale - Torino

Stage 1 kicks off in the suburbs of Turin and finishes in the centre. After a flat initial phase of around 45 km, the riders will tackle three climbs.

the grand tour india

San Francesco al Campo - Santuario di Oropa (Biella)

Challenging stage featuring the first summit finish. After a flat run-up across Canavese and Vercellese areas the pink caravan will reach Valdengo, where a succession of minor climbs begins.

Planimetria/Map Stage 3 Giro d'Italia 2024

Novara - Fossano

Predominantly flat stage with some minor ups and downs in the central part.

Planimetria/Map Stage 4 Giro d'Italia 2024

Acqui Terme - Andora

A fairly flat stage, the only obstacles are the Col di Melogno climb (8 km at around 5%) midway through the stage and the final Capo Mele, which is tackled from the same side as during the Milano-Sanremo.

Planimetria/Map stage 5 Giro d'Italia 2024

Genova - Lucca

The riders leave the city of Genova and travel along the coast on the Aurelia state road in the first 50 km. The stage has just two climbs on the menu.

Planimetria/Map Stage 6 Giro d'Italia 2024

Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio) - Rapolano Terme

A demanding stage characterised by a hilly second part and three gravel sectors totalling almost 12 km. The first two are shared with the Strade Bianche, the third is a new one.

Planimetria/Map Stage 7 Giro d'Italia 2024

Foligno - Perugia TUDOR ITT

Individual time trial clearly divided into two parts. The first 32 km, flat and largely non-technical, lead to the foot of Umbria’s capital city of Perugia. The riders then tackle the ascent of Casaglia, with gradients up to 16%.

Planimetria/Map Stage 8 Giro d'Italia 2024

Spoleto - Prati di Tivo

Short stage with no flat ground to play with and plenty of elevation gain.

Planimetria/Map Stage 9 Giro d'Italia 2024

Avezzano - Napoli

Stage clearly divided into two parts. The first 180 km are the run-up to a demanding finale with short and punchy climbs.

Planimetria/Map Tappa 10 Giro d'Italia 2024

Pompei - Cusano Mutri (Bocca della Selva)

The stage begins calmly with the first part of the race as good as flat.

Planimetria/Map Stage 11 Giro d'Italia 2024

Foiano di Val Fortore - Francavilla al Mare

Stage clearly divided into two parts. The first crosses the Apennines to Termoli and the second, entirely flat, is played out along the ss.16 state road and the shores of the Adriatic Sea.

Altimetria/Profile Stage 12 Giro d'Italia 2024

Martinsicuro - Fano

A flat stage for the first 50 km and then studded with walls and hairpin bends to the finish. After a rather simple initial part along the Adriatic coast, the stage moves away from the sea to face repeated short, steep climbs that come in the final two thirds of the route.

Planimetria/Map Stage 13 Giro d'Italia 2024

Riccione - Cento

Completely flat stage through the plains of Emilia-Romagna.

the grand tour india

Castiglione delle Stiviere - Desenzano del Garda TUDOR ITT

The second time trial test is predominantly flat with several undulations within it and an elevation gain of roughly 250 metres. The riders cross a few villages and a series of minor ups and downs. The road is almost constantly slightly downhill heading towards the shore of Lake Garda.

Max Verstappen holds off Lando Norris to win Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and extend F1 lead

Max Verstappen held off a challenge from McLaren's Lando Norris to win the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday and extend his Formula 1 championship lead. Verstappen started on pole position and stayed ahead of Norris at the start but was put under pressure by the McLaren driver again near the end and won by less than a second. It was the defending champion's fifth win in seven Grand Prix races this year and followed Verstappen being beaten by Norris in Miami two weeks ago.

Norris' second place Sunday underlined the McLaren team's credentials to be the closest challenger to Verstappen and Red Bull this season. Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari.
