Choose a portacot with great ventilation

Each side should be mostly made from a breathable mesh material that extends all the way to the floor of the cot.

When is your child too big for a portacot?

Fixed Sides

This is an interesting one as there are pros and cons to both fixed side cots and ones with a drop rail. A drop rail gives you as a parent a little bit of help when it comes to laying down your sleeping baby. By being able to drop the rail, you’re not leaning down into a cot, struggling to lay your baby down without straining your back. Definite pro. On the other side of that coin though, is the fact that as your baby gets older and mobile and able to pull themselves up, it may play on your mind whether they are able to operate (even by accident) the drop rail.

Drop side cots have been banned in some countries and where they aren’t they have to adhere to strict safety regulations.

Long-Lasting

Buying a product that won’t last generally isn’t a very sound plan. Money doesn’t grow on trees and children are so very wonderful, but so very expensive and you don’t want to have to buy replacements for things if you don’t have to.

Looking for a cot that will grow with your baby doesn’t have to mean searching out the most expensive option, and it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to find something that will last forever. The traditional cots still work just as well– Boori Noosa Cot Bed is a great option.

Considering the amount of time children spend in bed, you will spend making the bed, then re-making the bed after your children have been bouncing on the bed, and so on…. I’d say that you would definitely have had your money’s worth after 5 years!

This is a tricky one as usually the cots themselves have functionality and ease of use as their main design focus. Comfort for your baby tends to be from the mattress you choose. This is an entirely different decision altogether unless the cot products you choose come with a mattress included.

When it comes to comfort, you will probably find it hard in those first few months to put your baby down. Often times your baby will fall asleep on you, cradled in your arms. Let’s be fair, there is no competing with that kind of comfort, but there are things that some products can offer to soothe your baby if they aren’t taking well to sleeping in a cot.

Some cots on the market come on castors (wheels essentially) that mean if your little one stirs, you can gently rock them back and forth to lull them back off into dreamland. If the cot you have your heart set on doesn’t have this feature, don’t panic. There are furniture castors that can be installed on the cot you have chosen. This means you get the best of both worlds and don’t have to compromise on the cot you want. Win-win!

The mattress has been designed in conjunction with paediatric specialists to provide the best support possible, but the only problem is that it’s at floor level, so if you have shorter arms, bear in mind it might take some effort, or the help of a taller family member.

The thing about parenthood is that you always have your hands full, and when it comes to travelling with kids, that goes double. The big difference between the two is that this little number is more suited to long-haul travel, with a weight of just 3.2 kilograms and an ultra-compact design that’s formulated to fit in a suitcase, luggage locker, or even the storage space of your buggy. 

Reviewers found it was a bit awkward to set up, but that it was light, sturdy and comfy enough to make up for it, so we reckon it sounds just fine if you’re setting up camp for a while.  

6. SpaceCot Travel Cot

If the combination of quick setup and sturdiness is the holy grail of travel cots, then call us Indiana Jones, because we seem to have found it in the SpaceCot Travel Cot. The makers say it opens and closes in just three seconds — a big boast, but reviewers vouch for its veracity. 

They found it super easy to set up, and loved the included detachable crib levels and mattress that let it work as a cot up to six months, and a playpen up to 30 months. If you frequently find yourself with your hands too full for faffing around, all signs point to this easy-up cot being a good buy.  

7. LittleLife Arc 2

OK, it’s a tent. Get over it. Kids love camping! Seriously though, the tent-style Arc 2 has a lot going for it, especially if you travel a lot because (and this is a stroke of genius) the Arc 2 packs-up into a small lightweight backpack. A pop-up tent weighing a mere 2.5kg, it uses colour-coded, lightweight aluminium poles and comes with a Velcro-attached foam mattress and washable cotton cover. 

Although it can be used indoors perfectly well, as its design suggests, the Arc 2 can also be used outdoors, and be secured with tent pegs. It works as a bed, a playpen, and just as a place to keep a child out of the sun. If you’re an outdoorsy kind of a family, the Arc 2 is a no-brainer.

8. Pop Up Bassinet Koo-Di

Designed for use in the house or out in the garden, at the beach or for trips somewhere rather sunnier, the Koo-Di Sun and Sleep Travel Bassinet looks to be a versatile option for keeping the smallest member of your group happy, cool, and out of the sun. 

The mesh sides are intended for ventilation and peace of mind, allowing you to check on them as they (hopefully) snooze, while the integrated zip-up mosquito net keeps nibbles at bay, and the blackout blind claims to block 93 percent of all harmful rays. That’s all pretty high tech for a travel cot, making it our best bet for travel abroad and hot summer days at home.  

9. Chicco Lullago Zip Crib

This expandable travel crib gives the option for different depths as they grow, giving it more lasting power than some of our smaller picks, and making it, according to happy reviewers, a great transitional cot. Users loved that it was sturdy and easy to put together, but found it a bit heavy to carry — although, while the travel bag is a bit more cumbersome than its BabyBjorn equivalent, some might appreciate that it looks more like your average minimal tote bag rather than a baby-specific behemoth. 

Overall, it’s agreed that the quality is top-notch and the setup simple, but if you have to travel a long way, you might be better placed going for something like Phil & Ted’s travel cot.  

10. Joie Excursion Change & Rock Travel Cot0

Trying to get them off to sleep isn’t the only thing that can prove tricky on the road - there’s also the small matter of changing to attend to. Luckily, some clever clogs at Joie has made a travel cot that doubles up as a changing table. Actually, make that triples up, because it also packs in a soothing rocker with soft toys. And it has wheels! 

With a draught-resistant base and mesh lining for a comfortable sleep, a rocker/bassinet for soothing and naps, and a changing table for you-know-what, reviewers agree this is a great portable option for when you want to streamline your stuff. Just be aware that it’s very large and very heavy, so it’s not the best for small cars and certainly won’t fit in a suitcase, but gosh darn is it versatile.

Consumer group CHOICE warns some portacots are unsafe

Most parents with young children have looked into buying a portable cot at some stage. 

They're convenient and easy to use for travel or visiting family.

But consumer group CHOICE is warning they can pose a serious safety risk to babies, with a number of products failing its annual safety test. 

So, which brands failed the test?

Each year, CHOICE tests a selection of the portacots currently available in the Australian market. 

It assesses the models against both mandatory Australian safety standards and voluntary standards. 

Six out of the 11 portacots tested this year failed. 

They include:

• Kmart Anko 3 in 1 portacot
• Target Adventure V2 3 in 1 portacot
• Baby Bunting 4Baby Clouds 2 in 1 portacot
• Baby Bunting 4Baby Vacation portacot
• Phil and Teds Traveller 2021
• Star Kidz Vivo Super Light Travel Cot

"We found with most of them they are failing the mattress firmness test," says CHOICE's Chris Barnes. "It's all about having a level and firm sleeping surface."

If a mattress is too soft, it can be a risk factor for sudden unexpected death in infancy. 

"The very fact they do fold up means there is a certain amount of variability in the sleeping surface.

"It's not like a regular cot mattress, which is not meant to be folded and put away, which means there is less scope for it to get out of shape."

The tests also looked at whether the cots had breathable sides, sturdiness and stability and entrapment hazards.

Portacot suppliers dispute the tests

Target and Kmart told the ABC their products actually did meet all mandatory and voluntary standards.

"We disputed CHOICE's findings over a month ago and questioned testing methods," says a spokesperson.

They have had no reported injuries relating to these mattresses.

Nanny Annie Pty Ltd says its Star Kidz portacot also complies with both standards and disagrees with the CHOICE findings.

"We have the product tested independently by Intertek and [it] passed all the components of the same test conducted by CHOICE," explains a spokesperson.

Baby Bunting also says independent laboratories confirm its products comply with the mattress firmness standard.

"Our portacots are safe and parents and caregivers should feel confident using our products," a spokesperson says.

The ABC also contacted Phil and Teds for comment.

There is a grey area around standards

Confusingly, there is a grey area around the Australian standards, which may be the reason for the dispute, says Chris Barnes.

"There is an accepted Australian standard for measuring how firm a sleeping surface is (Australian standard 8811) where they often fail."

"The portable cot standard itself — the regulation it has to pass doesn't call on that test, just a general statement saying the sleeping surface has to be sufficiently firm."

"Where you have this scope for different types of test it does create these types of problems," he said.

The nursery products industry body, INPAA, has slammed CHOICE's report. 

"We believe the reporting of this terrifies parents and will possibly lead to the use of unsafe sleeping environments," says INPAA director Tim Wain.

He says all portacots have firm mattresses and the biggest risk factor is when parents introduce new, softer, mattresses.

"They've identified a hazard that isn't a hazard."

I'm confused. Is the consumer watchdog doing anything about it?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it is aware of CHOICE's testing but won't comment on the steps they may take to investigate such reports. 

It says since 2017, there have been five recalls for portacots (the latest being Pharmrec Trading's Mamakiddies Happy Dino Portable Travel Cot last year). 

The six products that failed CHOICE's test have not been recalled.

The ACCC is also focusing on addressing product safety issues with sleep products this year.

It is currently seeking feedback on a range of proposed regulatory options which aim to prevent infant injuries and deaths. 

Umm. Did any portacots pass the test?

Five of the 11 portacots tested by Choice this year passed the safety tests (there are also others on the market that have passed in previous years that are not listed here).

I can't afford new. It is risky to buy second-hand?

"Buying second-hand with any baby and kids product is a risky enterprise, unfortunately," warned Chris Barnes.

However, for many parents, it's the cheapest option.

So, if you do want to use a second-hand portacot, Chris Barnes suggests checking a few things first.

"Check the product claims to meet the standards — don't get an unnamed import."

He says to also check the product hasn't ever been recalled — you can find that on this government website .

And do your own stress test — checking all the joints open and close and the sleeping surface looks flat and firm.

Road-Tested: The Top 10 Baby Cots In Australia In 2024

Cot , crib, baby bed… there are numerous ways to describe the place where you lay your precious baby’s head to rest, and likewise, there are numerous baby cots out there to choose from.

The aim is to wade through the options and work out which option is the most suitable for your space, in line with your decor - and most importantly - safest for your baby.

What should you look for when buying a cot?

When it comes to choosing the right cot for your baby, it’s important to take into account the size, shape, materials used, the look and feel, and above all, the safety of the cot.

It's important to look for something with panels and bars surrounding the sides so that your baby receives adequate airflow. All baby cots sold in Australia need to comply with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2172-2003, even if they’re made overseas. Also be wary of second-hand items, as even if they meet these safety guidelines, they can become unsafe over time, due to damage and general wear and tear. For this reason, it’s always best to buy your baby cot new, so you can be sure the safety standards are in line with Australia’s legal requirements.

You should always ensure your cot is painted with non-toxic paint, and if you’re unsure it’s well worth purchasing teething rails to ensure your baby doesn’t start chewing on the side rails - as they so often do!

The most important factor for comfort in your baby’s cot is selecting the right mattress. This is also important for safety, as the mattress placed in any cot should fit properly, reaching all sides of the cot comfortably with no gaps between the mattress and the bars. When it comes to the cot mattress firmness, comfort and safety go hand-in-hand. It’s important not to purchase anything too soft, which could result in a breathing obstruction. Look for a cot mattress with an ‘infant’ side and a ‘toddler’ side, so that you can switch the firmness as your baby grows.

To coincide with Australian safety requirements, the panels of any baby cot should be spaced between 50 mm and 95 mm apart, as bigger gaps can trap a baby's head, arms, or legs. If the bars or panels are made from flexible material, the maximum spacing between the bars or panels should be less than 95 mm.

In terms of design, that’s really up to you and the style you think will fit best in your nursery. As cots can be a big investment, many parents tend to choose white or natural wood finish cots, as these can be unisex. A recent trend is the option for acrylic clear panels in place of traditional wooden rails.

- Longevity

Many parents opt for a cot that can transition with their child. Most cots cater to this, either coming complete with a toddler railing or having one available to purchase alongside the cot. This simple addition of the railing means that when the time comes the cot can be transformed into a toddler bed and used up until they’re at least three or four.

These wide-style acrylic side panels have recently become a firm favourite among parents, as they create less of a jail-style look, and more of a translucent, chic look into your baby’s cot.

For a cot to provide real longevity and ease of use for parents, it’s important to find a cot that means you can safely and securely lower your baby into the cot without too much struggle. The highest level, reserved for newborns, should be lowered as soon as your baby can sit up without assistance.

- [Avoid] Lambswool coverings and the like

It’s also important to stick to a fitted mattress sheet on your cot, without a lambswool covering, or any other kind of comforter, as these can also prove too soft and result in a potential breathing obstruction.

- [Avoid] Bumpers

Though bumpers can look gorgeous tied around the rails of your cot, Red Nose guidelines state that they are unsafe to have in a cot due to potential breathing obstructions. The same guidelines state that a baby’s bed should be clear of blankets, toys, and pillows.

- [Consider] Toddler bed attachment

If you want your baby’s cot to go the extra mile, check out whether it comes with a toddler transition rail. This attachment allows you to remove one side of the cot and fit it with a shortened side rail that allows toddlers to get in and out of bed as they wish. Generally, these attachments mean the bed can be used up to around four years of age, provided your child doesn’t outgrow the length of the cot. Some cots come complete with the toddler transition rail, and others sell them separately.

“I really love this cot! It is my favourite baby item. I have only had it for 15 months so far, but I have had no trouble with it. I fell in love with it when I saw it at the shop, but it was more money than I wanted to spend as this was our fourth baby. The other cot we had only made it to baby number three and I felt that I should probably buy a cheaper one as this was the last baby I would have and I needed a new pram and car seat as well. A portable cot (also known as a travel cot or portacot) is a handy item to have in the first few years of your child's life. It's great for holidays and sleepovers, and a convenient option if you want a second, collapsible cot at the grandparents' or another carer's house. 

But CHOICE experts recommend taking great caution when you're buying this product, as many popular brands pose serious safety risks to babies.

"In our expert labs, we regularly test a selection of portable cots currently available on the Australian market," says CHOICE testing expert Kim Gilmour . 

"In our lab tests, two-thirds of these products failed key safety requirements, which is a really disappointing result. Unfortunately, this is something we are used to seeing with this particular baby product."

"We assess all models in our labs against the most current Australian safety standard for portable cots. But there are still many models failing to even meet the minimum mandatory requirements, such as mattress firmness."

The portable cots that failed our key safety tests, responses from manufacturers, tips for buying a portacot and how to use it safely.

"Several portable cots received performance scores as low as 20% simply because they had so many failures," says Kim. 

In fact, 18 of the 27 models in our current review failed to pass CHOICE's key safety requirements – that's two-thirds, a worryingly high proportion.

It's important that you not only buy a safe portacot, but that you also use it safely.

Products that failed did so for a number of reasons, including major head and limb entrapment risks and suffocation risks. 

Less serious hazards include finger entrapment risks, or the possibility a child may be able to open a zipper or combination of zippers and get out of the cot.

"Most of the safety failures we see relate to the portacot mattress either being not firm enough or not fitting snugly inside the portacot base," says Kim.

"Soft or poorly fitting mattresses can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death. We also see problematic cot designs that have 'puffy' covers that can also cause a risk.

"The good news is that although we haven't been able to recommend very many portable cots in the past, our latest review has revealed a few more products that do pass our safety tests, and which we can recommend to parents. Others have only minor safety issues.

"However, when choosing a portacot for your baby, you want to make sure you're making the safest choice possible, so we strongly recommend checking our reviews before you buy. You can also view a comprehensive list of all children's products that have failed our safety tests in the past on the CHOICE website.

"And if you've already purchased one of these unsafe cots, CHOICE recommends you return it to the retailer or manufacturer and ask for a full refund. You should note however that they may not oblige unless the cot has been officially recalled."

In response to our tests, manufacturers from Baby Bunting (4Baby), Kmart, Childcare, Love N Care and Star Kidz disagreed with our results, showing us reports from other third-party labs, indicating that their products pass safety standards. Target also disagreed with our findings.

Childcare Ariel 4 in 1 074300-411:

CNP Brands disagrees with our findings and provided us with test reports from an accredited lab indicating compliance to mandatory and voluntary standards. CHOICE also operates an in-house accredited lab and stands by its results.

Love N Care 3 in 1 sleep n go HK 993G:

Love n Care disagrees with our findings and provided us with test reports from an accredited lab indicating compliance to mandatory and voluntary standards. CHOICE also operates an in-house accredited lab and stands by its results.

Star Kidz Vivo Super Light Travel Cot:

In response to our findings, the manufacturer has provided us with a test report from an accredited lab which says the Star Kidz Vivo passes all relevant safety standards. CHOICE also operates an in-house accredited lab and stands by its results.

Target Cleo Vogue Portacot 6702 7552:

Target has sent CHOICE an initial response to our findings. 

Target Holiday Portacot BRT023A:

The manufacturer provided the following response to our findings: "The Target Holiday Portacot has been tested by an independent accredited third party laboratory and has passed the full requirements of the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2195:1999 which outlines regulatory requirements for portable folding cots." CHOICE also operates an in-house accredited lab and stands by its results.

"Price or brand is not an indicator of how safe these products are," says Kim. "We find that even some of the leading brands of portacots have issues that pose safety risks for babies. 

"Our advice is to always check our reviews and do some research before you settle on which one to purchase." 

Here are some tips on how to buy and use a portacot safely:

• Travel cots are designed to be used temporarily only – they are not suitable to use as a permanent sleep option. 
• Before you buy, check the government's product safety website to see if there have been any product recalls or safety issues with particular brands or models. 
• Only use the mattress or padded base supplied by the manufacturer – don't use other mattresses, as they can pose a suffocation risk or make the cot too shallow, allowing a child to climb out too easily. 
• The mattress should be firm and snug-fitting all around to avoid trapping the baby's head. 
• Make sure there is breathable mesh material all around where it meets the top of the mattress area.
• Make sure there's nothing sticking out that could snag the baby's clothes or act as a foothold for the baby to climb out. 
• Don't position the cot beside blind cords, power points, windows or other hazards. 
• Never put pillows, cot bumpers or soft toys in the portacot – not only because they're a suffocation risk, but because they can also be used to climb out. 
• Once the baby weighs more than 15kg, or can undo the folding latches, stop using the portacot.

We just bought a Clic for a trip to New Zealand. It was so handy for the airport and fit in the overhead cabin perfectly. Our daughter seems to like it and doesn't have any issues with the seat position that others have commented about. She slept really well in the horizontal position which was great at the airport. I've started to use it as my normal pram. I agree you wouldn't/can't do a big shop with it, but it is so convenient for short trips to the shops and popping it up and down quickly, it really is so so easy and light.

I received my jet 3 pram a few weeks ago now and have fallen in love with it. It’s light weight, portable and easy to take with you anywhere you go. I’ve had a little trouble with opening it but I think this will come with time and as the pram is used more it will become easier. It has now replaced my cruz for trips to the shops or out for dinner. I haven’t taken it on a plane yet but will see how it holds up over the Christmas break.

Consumer group CHOICE is warning parents after an “extremely concerning” number of portable cots failed its lab testing, as it called on the government to mandate new safety standards.

The consumer advocacy group tested 26 currently available portable cots from brands including Kmart, Phil & Teds, Target and 4Baby (Baby Bunting) against current industry standards - both mandatory and voluntary - finding only eight passed the test.

CHOICE said current mandated safety standards were applied in 1999, while updated standards introduced in 2010 remain only voluntary. It is calling on governments to strengthen the product safety laws to ensure all manufacturers are legally required to adhere to the most recent safety standards.

Among the new, as yet voluntary, standards is a safety specification that a child must be able to breathe through the textile materials and other materials used in the breathable zone around the mattress.

CHOICE said most of the safety failures it found related to soft or poorly fitting mattresses inside the portacot, which can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death.

However, a number of the companies involved have disputed CHOICE’s results.

CHOICE testing expert Kim Gilmour said the number of cots that failed its testing was “extremely concerning”.

“We also see problematic cot designs that have ‘puffy’ covers that can also cause a risk,” Gilmour said.

CHOICE accused the government of only making safety standards mandatory after a product had caused death or serious injury.

“This reactive approach is also inherent in general product safety laws, which allow businesses to react to product safety problems after they happen rather than trying to prevent them from occurring in the first place,” CHOICE said.

“Ultimately, the result for both regulated and non-regulated products is that consumers have to wait until tragedy strikes for governments to take action and for businesses to take responsibility.”

Gilmour said parents should not just be looking at price and/or brand when purchasing a portable cot. The CHOICE website recommends models that have a CHOICE Expert Rating of 70 per cent or more.

“We find that even some of the leading brands of portacots have issues that pose safety risks for babies,” she said.

“Our advice is to always check our reviews and do some research before you settle on which one to purchase.”

Wesfarmers, which owns Kmart and Target, told 7NEWS.com.au it disagreed with CHOICE’s claims that four of its cots were unsafe.

“Both brands have tested this product to these same standards in an independent accredited laboratory and the results showed full compliance,” a Kmart Group spokesperson said.

“We disputed CHOICE’s findings over a month ago and questioned testing methods because CHOICE do not use an accredited laboratory to test portacots– our Kmart and Target Portacots have been tested by an independent accredited laboratory and fully complied to the same mandatory and voluntary standards that CHOICE is referencing.”

According to Australian national accreditation body NATA , CHOICE does use an accredited lab for its testing.

Star Kidz - whose Super Light Travel Cots were also found to have failed CHOICE’s testing - also disagreed with the findings, saying that the cots are “produced in compliance with both mandatory and voluntary Australian safety standards”.

“We have the product tested independently by Intertek and passed all the components of the same tests conducted by CHOICE”, the company said.

The world's safest cities for travel have been announced for 2024 and Sydney has ranked fourth

An annual global study has ranked Sydney as one of the safest cities in the world – and it's the only Aussie city to make the list

Aside from the devastating events that have taken place recently, most people would agree that life in Sydney is pretty safe – relative to other places across the world. And now, that theory has been validated, with the annual  annual  State of Travel Insurance  Safest Destinations report   listing Sydney as the fourth safest city in the world for travellers. Not the first time Sydney has ranked highly in safety studies in recent times .

Top of the list of the world’s safest cities was Hawaiian capital Honolulu, which appeared behind Sydney on a recent round-up of the most relaxed cities in the world .   

The methodology used to determine the list involved analysing a combo of traveller survey responses along with third-party data sources to evaluate weather emergencies, health measures, terrorism and the safety of underrepresented groups. Based on the data, our Harbour City came out as the fourth safest city in the world. On the list of the world’s safest countries, the lucky country came in at number ten.  Despite Australia ranking within the world’s safest countries, Sydney was the only Australian city to appear in the list of the world’s 15 safest cities, appearing behind Honolulu, Montreal and Reykjavik. 

Last year, Australia ranked as the fourth safest country in the world in the same report, and we suspect the climate crisis might have something to do with our fall in the rankings, with authors listing our weak ozone layer as a danger for travellers visiting us Down Under.

According to the report, Australia has a notably low number of homicides (a still heartbreaking 377 in 2022, compared with a devastating 692 during the same year in Chicago).

The report lists wildlife as the main danger to look out for in Australia, quoting the State Department who say ““Australian fauna can be dangerous. From jellyfish to crocodiles, sharks, poisonous insects, and snakes, the continent and its waters host wildlife that merit awe and respect in equal doses.”

And while Australia as a whole might have fallen in the rankings, it looks like visiting Sydney is regarded as safer – with the Emerald City jumping from the tenth safest city in 2023 to number four in 2024. After what Sydney has gone through in the past weeks, here’s hoping it’s true.
