May is a great time to travel to many places in the U.S. and around world, thanks to sunny skies and pleasant temperatures. Memorial Day weekend might just be the opportunity you have been waiting for to take a much-needed vacation. Whether you're looking to spend this Memorial Day unwinding on a white sand beach or honoring fallen soldiers at big-city war memorials, these destinations offer the chance to enjoy the three-day weekend in style.

  • Caribbean/Mexico

Cape May, New Jersey

People bike and walk in front of traditional villas in Cape May, New Jersey, on a sunny summer day.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of tourist season in Cape May , and it's no surprise why. A quintessential summertime escape for many Americans, this historic seaside town boasts pleasant temperatures in the 70s come late spring. Cape May also played a significant role in military defense during World War II. Just keep in mind that traffic jams are common – especially during the busy season – so be sure to plan your drive accordingly.

Travelers will enjoy stretching out along Cape May's beaches, strolling through the Washington Street Mall and admiring well-preserved Victorian architecture adjacent to the shoreline. You can also visit Emlen Physick Estate – the town's only Victorian-era house museum – or see historic war planes at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.

Where to stay: You won't find chain hotels in Cape May, but you can stay at a darling bed-and-breakfast, a boutique hotel like The Virginia Hotel & Cottages or a rental cottage.

New York City

Aerial of the Central Park in New York with golf fields and tall skyscrapers surrounding the park.

New York City is the perfect place for a last-minute, long-weekend trip – especially if you're car-free. Pack your walking shoes and plan to visit one world-class site after another on foot or by subway. Must-see attractions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and – of course – Times Square. May is also one of New York's most pleasant times of year (if you don't mind a chance of rain). Expect daytime highs in the upper 60s, perfect for a stroll through Central Park or along the High Line.

Special Memorial Day events include the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade and Fleet Week, when civilians can tour naval ships and meet members of the U.S. Navy, the Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. New York City beaches also open to the public on this weekend. When it's time to dine, you'll find an endless list of establishments, from historic bagel shops to under-the-radar delis to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Where to stay: You can find all kinds of lodging options in New York – just be sure to book early, as rates can get expensive. One top option is The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel in Manhattan.

Annapolis, Maryland

Main Street in downtown Annapolis, Maryland, in the evening.

Travelers looking to pay tribute to military men and women this Memorial Day can do so in the waterfront city of Annapolis . Get outside to watch the Memorial Day Parade down Main Street, or stroll through the rest of Annapolis' historic downtown, where you're bound to see rows of American flags.

If you're looking for a bit more space to stretch out, head to Quiet Waters Park. Spanning 340 acres, the park is ideal for biking, kayaking, picnicking or simply admiring panoramic views of the South River in late May's pleasant temperatures (high 70s to 80s). Bicycle and boat rentals are available on-site and nearby. When hunger strikes, head to Boatyard Bar & Grill or Carrol's Creek Cafe for delicious seafood.

Where to stay: Accommodation options in Annapolis range from modern outposts like Graduate Annapolis to picturesque bed-and-breakfasts to vacation rentals downtown or near the water.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Winter sunrise in Dewey Beach, Delaware.

Ring in the start of summer on the shores of Rehoboth Beach . Calm waters and temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s make this Delaware beach town a great kid-friendly option, and travelers of all ages will enjoy walking down the mile-long boardwalk filled with restaurants and shops.

When you're not sunbathing on the sand or relaxing on the balcony of your vacation rental or hotel room, head to Cape Henlopen State Park to fish, hike and bird-watch. The Funland amusement park is another staple in the area that opens for the season in May, and some shopping at Tanger Outlets is a must when you need a break from outdoor activities.

Where to stay: The Avenue Inn and Spa , located a block from the beach and boardwalk, is a top lodging option in Rehoboth Beach.

Washington, D.C.

The White House and Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C.

When it comes to celebrating the true reason behind Memorial Day, nowhere is quite as patriotic as Washington, D.C. Honor military personnel with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, where more than 400,000 fallen soldiers and veterans (plus their family members) are buried. On the National Mall, wander along the long granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to read the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died during the Vietnam War. Then, head to the World War II Memorial to pay tribute to those who perished on the battlefields. Average May temperatures in the nation's capital tend to sit in the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Where to stay: After a long day of exploring, head back to a luxury hotel – a great option is The Hay-Adams – or more budget-friendly Airbnb.

Austin, Texas

Aerial of river and greenery with Austin skyline in the background.

Visit the Lone Star State for an authentic Memorial Day weekend experience, complete with mouthwatering Texas barbecue, temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and plenty of time spent enjoying the great outdoors. Austin offers something for everyone, from kayaking in Zilker Metropolitan Park (rental boats are available on-site) to learning about the state's history at the Texas Capitol in central Austin. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake is another beloved natural area where travelers and locals alike can explore quiet trails and picnic along the edge of the water.

Where to stay: Bed down at a hotel like The Driskill , an Airbnb or even a campsite in nearby Texas Hill Country.

Charleston, South Carolina

The Waterfront Park Pineapple Fountain in Charleston, South Carolina, at sunset.

Cobblestone streets, centuries-old oak trees and historic architecture make Charleston a charming getaway year-round. But visiting during Memorial Day weekend means you'll see the city at its best (albeit usually its busiest) before the oppressive summer heat sets in. Average May temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s, rain is minimal, and colorful gardens are in full bloom.

Learn about the history of the city as you cruise through the Charleston Harbor on a boat tour , or admire the flora and fauna of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. If your holiday weekend experience won't be complete without a beach trip, head to nearby Folly Beach (a little more than 10 miles south of the city) or Sullivan's Island (less than 10 miles southeast) for a day.

Where to stay: Retire for the evening at a luxurious hotel , such as The Spectator Hotel, or stay in one of many quaint vacation rentals to save some cash.

Big Bear Lake, California

Reflections in the waters of Big Bear Lake at Boulder Bay, California, with vacations houses and mountain ridges in the background.

By late May, travelers can typically bid farewell to snowfall in Big Bear Lake and say hello to pleasant temperatures in the low 70s. Located in the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California, about 80 miles northwest of Palm Springs, laid-back Big Bear Lake separates itself from typical long-weekend beach destinations with its endless outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and paddleboarding. Canoes, kayaks and other equipment rentals are available from a bevy of local sports shops dispersed throughout Big Bear Lake. Although there are a few small swimming beaches on the lake, including Meadow Park, keep in mind that the water is fairly chilly year-round.

Where to stay: When it comes to lodging, take your pick from multiple resorts, inns, vacation homes, cabins and lodges. One top option downtown is Sierra Blue Hotel & Swim Club. If you plan to travel with your pet , Big Bear Lakefront Cabins offers pet-friendly cabins with amenities like hot tubs and swimming pools overlooking the lake or lush mountains.

Colorado flags hanging in Larimer Square, Denver.

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Denver to enjoy the city's 70-degree weather, as long as you're willing to put up with a little rain (May is typically the city's wettest month, seeing about 2 inches of rainfall on average). Travelers can wander through the Denver Botanic Gardens or explore Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, a naturally formed outdoor venue with on-site hiking trails. If you're looking for a great place to bring kids, head to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which boasts exhibits about animals, mummies and outer space, all in one venue.

Where to stay: As far as lodging goes, vacationers will have their pick of swanky options such as The Oxford Hotel and airy rental lofts in the heart of downtown.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Moulton Barn in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Though temperatures are typically still creeping their way into the mid-60s come Memorial Day, visiting Jackson Hole during this shoulder season promises exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities (think: eagles, bison and moose), cheaper hotel rates and fewer crowds to contend with. Spring also signals the reopening of many park roadways in the nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, as well as the start of whitewater rafting season. Granite Hot Springs Pool reopens for the summer season in late May, so travelers can plan on taking a dip in the steamy 93-degree thermal pool after a fun day of hiking and exploring.

Where to stay: Opt for a rustic cabin to fully embrace Jackson Hole's changing seasons in the wilderness, or pump up the opulence with a stay at a luxury resort such as Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa at Jackson Hole .

Aerial of the Las Vegas Strip at twilight.

Kick off the unofficial start of summer with a trip to Sin City. For an adults-only getaway, travelers can hit the slots, party the night away at a high-energy nightclub or live music venue, and enjoy a few cocktails under the sun at one of Las Vegas ' rowdy pool parties. Late May temperatures typically feature highs in the 90s and lows in the 60s.

Beyond walking around the Strip, popular things to do include visiting the Sphere (a unique new attraction opened in 2023) and taking day trips to more family-friendly outdoor destinations, such as the Grand Canyon , the Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You can also consider a Las Vegas tour ; fun options range from open-top nighttime bus tours around the city to scenic helicopter rides to food tours sampling a variety of treats.

Where to stay: You can't go wrong with any of the city's iconic resorts or themed hotels if you're looking for the full Vegas experience. Still, some properties, such as the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas , offer a little more tranquility than others.

Palm Springs, California

Brightly colored flowers along the water at a golf course in Palm Springs, California.

Trendy, colorful Palm Springs is an ideal spot for a Memorial Day weekend getaway. Springtime brings picturesque blooms of wildflowers, poppies and lilies, and visitors can enjoy popular attractions like the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway or The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. You'll also have plenty of time for a round at the golf course, boutique shopping in the El Paseo Shopping District, and mouthwatering meals and cocktails at top-notch eateries .

To honor fallen soldiers over the holiday weekend, head to the Palm Springs Air Museum for its annual Memorial Day Flower Drop. At this event, a vintage warbird plane drops more than 3,000 carnations to the crowds below. While you might avoid Palm Springs ' roasting summer temperatures above 100 degrees, you should still expect May highs in the 90s – so plan accordingly for a hike through Joshua Tree National Park or other outdoor activities.

Where to stay: Most of the city's eclectic hotels, inns and bungalows offer on-site pools to cool off in – and the highly rated Holiday House Palm Springs is no exception.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Colorful, historical buildings on the coast of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Plan a trip to Puerto Rico to enjoy the island's beaches and nature preserves, including El Yunque National Forest, and pencil in some time to take a stroll through colorful, picturesque Old San Juan. If you'd like to sink your toes in the sand, head to Condado Beach or Ocean Park Beach to bask in May's 80-degree temps.

You'll also have your pick of historic sites to peruse as well: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal are two acclaimed forts that feature dungeons, tunnels and original cannons. When night falls, San Juan comes alive with pulsing nightclubs, bars and dance venues. A bonus: Americans do not need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico.

Where to stay: Lodging options here include a variety of hotels located either on or near the ocean, such as Condado Vanderbilt Hotel . You'll also find an array of modern, well-equipped vacation rentals with pools, city views and other amenities.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Aerial of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Head to St. Thomas for the feel of an international vacation with the ease of domestic travel (Americans don't need a passport to visit this U.S. territory). Though it's not the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands , St. Thomas is arguably the most popular of the three main islands. Since the major tourist season is from December to March, you may find discounted hotel rates and fewer crowds in May without sacrificing enjoyable temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Traveler-favorite activities include swimming and snorkeling at Magens Bay and Coki Beach, plus shopping and strolling along duty-free Main Street. For panoramic views of nearby islands – including Puerto Rico, on a clear day – take a tram ride up to Paradise Point with your camera or smartphone in hand.

Where to stay: Marriott's Frenchman's Cove is a top lodging option in St. Thomas, complete with an infinity-edge pool and a waterslide.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Beach and coastline of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Leave your worries behind with a relaxing long weekend in Ocho Rios, Jamaica . Popular things to do include exploring Dunn's River Falls and Park, relaxing on Ocho Rios Bay Beach, taking a sunset cruise and snorkeling in the clear Caribbean waters, among other activities. Travelers can expect temperatures in the 80s and plenty of sea breeze.

Where to stay: This Caribbean hot spot offers plenty of accommodation options, including hotels , villas and all-inclusive resorts – some of which are adults-only , like Sandals Ochi Beach Resort .

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

Boardwalk to beach on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands.

In May, the Caribbean paradise of Turks & Caicos offers highs in the mid-80s. Although this month might bring the occasional rain shower, hotel rates and dissipating crowds during this shoulder season make Memorial Day weekend a great time to visit. Vacationers can check out the tourist hot spot of Providenciales (known as Provo) to enjoy snorkeling and fishing. Provo is home to gorgeous white sand beaches, including Grace Bay Beach, and it's a great spot for water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding.

Where to stay: Stay at a resort like Seven Stars Resort & Spa to take advantage of abundant amenities, or opt for a villa rental near the beach for more privacy.

Tulum, Mexico

The beach and ruins of the Mayan civilization in Tulum, Mexico, on a sunny day.

With its white sand beaches, Instagram-worthy boutique hotels and average May temperatures in the 80s, Tulum is a paradise worth visiting. Spend your days sunbathing at Playa Paraíso, exploring the Mayan ruins or swimming in El Gran Cenote.

Where to stay: You can find a number of highly rated accommodations in Tulum if you're looking for a pampering trip – consider Ahau Tulum , for example. The town's scenic Airbnbs are a great choice as well: In fact, many vacation rentals here offer private pools and Jacuzzis, plus tons of greenery and cozy outdoor lounge chairs for a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend stay.

Chatham Bars Inn

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Late May marks the beginning of Cape Cod’s whale watching season, and wildlife enthusiasts won’t want to miss the opportunity to set out in the sunshine and try to catch a glimpse of migrating humpback and finback whales. Book with  Hyannis (out of Barnstable) or  Sea Salt Charters (out of Provincetown), both of whom work with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) to ensure safe and sustainable practices. Afterwards, grab an overflowing scoop of Marstons Mills Mint Chip or Bass River Black Raspberry at  Cape Cod Creamery , or snack on classic New England clam chowder and an extra-buttery lobster roll at  Sesuit Harbor Café , overlooking the water.

Stay here:  Not far from the stunning nature of the Outer Cape, there are loads of oceanfront villas and lodges designed with utmost comfort and privacy in mind.  The Villages at Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club , in Brewster, offers airy suites full of clean neutrals and has access to its sister resort’s nine tennis courts, five pools, bike rentals, and private beach. Just south of that is  Chatham Bars Inn , situated on 25 private acres perched atop a seaside bluff. Catch some Zs in an adorable cottage with bay windows, private decks, and cozy fireplaces, and enjoy amenities like an on-site spa, golf course, and Japanese Zen gardens.

St. Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg is the ideal Florida city for a long weekend vacation. Nestled along the serene Gulf Coast, St. Pete has some of the most enviable beaches in the state, but it’s also gaining recognition for its thriving arts scene. Most notable is the world-renowned Dalí Museum , but don’t miss the colorful and unique murals adorning the downtown area as well. Meanwhile, the St. Pete Pier, reopened in summer 2020 after a years-long revitalization effort, offers 26 acres of dining, entertainment, and greenery to explore near downtown.

Stay here: Art lovers should stay at the historic Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection , with a downtown location close to murals and museums. The resort also boasts several outdoor pools, a golf course, tennis courts, and its own marina.

Cathedral rock reflection in rain poolPlease see more Sedona Arizona images in my portfolio

Sedona, Arizona

A year-round haven for new age radicals, desert-loving hikers , and singletrack-speeding mountain bikers, Sedona truly comes alive in the spring, when the weather hovers around a breezy 86 degrees, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Immerse yourself in the locale’s famous red rocks on the easy  Fay Canyon Trail , then unwind in town with a sumptuous spa treatment at  The Wilde or  Amara Resort and Spa . Meet a mystic or buy a fully-charged crystal at the legendary  Center for the New Age before indulging in a fabulous canyon-view dinner at  Che Ah Chi .

Stay here:  If you’re alright staying out of town,  Enchantment Resort (and their newly-refurbished sister property  Mii amo ) are the best of the bunch, and ultra-close to must-have experiences, like hiking and cycling through dramatic sandstone ravines. If you’re hell-bent on sleeping in town, check out the wellness program at luxurious  L’Auberge de Sedona , which, apart from having dreamy cottages set against the backdrop of Oak Creek, hosts art therapy sessions, yoga classes, and sound healing sit-ins.

Jeune et Jolie Carlsbad California

Carlsbad, California

Every year from March to May, ranunculus flowers take over 50 acres of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch (most people visit during peak bloom in April, so you’ll dodge the flower peepers over MDW). But this coastal SoCal town is well worth visiting beyond the botanicals. You can easily spend a long weekend swimming and kayaking off the beaches, taking the family to LEGOLAND California, or indulging in some seriously great food. Be sure to stop by Jeune et Jolie , a contemporary French-style bistro that earned its first Michelin star in late 2021; then finish up with some must-try shortbread cookies (all made with local ingredients) at Carlsbad Cookie Company .

Stay here: When you’re not busy filling your Instagram feed with florals, rest up in peak luxury at the Park Hyatt Aviara , a Hot List and Readers’ Choice Award winner. The 200-acre coastal resort attracts visitors with an 18-hole golf course, expansive spa, and both family-friendly and adults-only pool areas.

Calgary and Banff National Park, Canada

What used to be known as a big-industry cowboy town has since been revitalized into a hotel and foodie mecca, and it’s all just a 90-minute drive from iconic  Banff National Park . Fly into Calgary and spend a day walking around picturesque Prince’s Island Park and stop in for a hearty brunch at  River Café , which uses locally-sourced produce and seafood in its dishes. Grab dinner and a craft cocktail at ultra-hip  Shokunin , located right downtown. If you've only got one day to spend in Banff, rent a car and head for the darling  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise , which sits at the edge of the brilliantly blue tarn that shares its name. From here, guests can hop directly onto a series of postcard-worthy hiking trails, canoe in the lake, or catch some incredible, bird’s eye views of the Canadian Rockies from the  Lake Louise Summer Gondola , which opens May 19. Hoping to see a glacier up close? The  Columbia Icefield Adventure opened on May 6.

Stay here:  In town, keep it historic and elegant by booking a room at the centrally-located  Fairmont Palliser , or get funky and enjoy Bow River views at newer  Alt Hotel Calgary East Village . In Banff, there’s no better activity access than at  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (pro tip: they just revamped their restaurant and wellness programs in mid-2022), which features marvelous views of rocky mountaintops and, of course, glacially-fed Lake Louise.

Maine

We’ve never been more excited to plan a trip to Maine, thanks in large part to the 2021 opening of Under Canvas’s new outpost in Acadia National Park. The 100-acre oceanfront “glampsite” feature 62 luxe tents, which guests can enjoy between hiking, picking blueberries, or chartering their own personal lobster boat. Outside of Acadia on Deer Isle, we’re also eager to visit Aragosta at Goose Cove , a restaurant helmed by Devin Finigan, who was recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 James Beard Awards. As an added bonus, Aragosta doubles as a hotel from May to November, with 12 suites and cottages.

Stay here: If you decide to pass on Under Canvas, head to Portland for your accommodations. The Press Hotel , located downtown, is a continuous winner in our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, thanks to its fun journalism theme (complete with typewriters in the lobby), comfortable beds, and a restaurant serving up super-local dishes.

Cabo San Lucas Memorial Day Getaways

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas has long been the favorite landing spot of party-ready spring breakers, but you’re likely to find a more laidback crowd during Memorial Day Weekend. Charter a boat to see the famous El Arco rock formation and do some snorkeling, then head back to town for some seriously delicious Mexican food. We recommend Los Michoacanos , a small chain that has a recipe for pork carnitas dating back to 1899.

Stay here: Enveloped by short, craggy hills on 24 pristine acres of Baja California beachfront, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal (a Readers’ Choice Award winner for five years running) is practically floating in open waters. Take advantage of the “Beyond the Beach Curated Exploration” program, which offers a personalized day trip to swim with whale sharks and snorkel in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park.

Inns of Aurora

The Finger Lakes, New York

Long known for its wine, the Finger Lakes of New York has been undergoing a positive transformation over the past few years. The 14-county region, defined by its 11 long, skinny lakes, is about four to five hours northwest of New York City by car, and city folks will certainly enjoy the slow, rural pace of life here. For the holiday weekend, we particularly recommend the town of Waterloo, also known as the birthplace of Memorial Day. This is where the first formal observance of the holiday was held, and today you can visit landmarks like the National Memorial Day Museum and Scythe Tree, which was originally planted by a Civil War soldier. Then, head south to the storybook village of Aurora, where you should grab lunch at Fargo Bar & Grill before settling down in one of the town’s historic inns.

Stay here: We’re big fans of the Inns of Aurora , a collection of luxury guesthouses with eclectic interiors and lake views. The inn also has one of the best hotel amenities we’ve come across: a Director of Serenity, who is dedicated to bringing physical, mental, and spiritual wellness to guests, whether it’s through one-on-one yoga lessons or curated relaxation playlists and customized aromatherapy.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

As the weather gets increasingly hot in Phoenix, residents flock to northern Arizona for cooler temperatures. (Well, relatively cooler.) If you have yet to visit one of the country’s most popular national parks, go ahead and follow the locals to the Grand Canyon to enjoy the world wonder in all its glory. Aim to hit the trails by 10 a.m. at the latest to dodge the big crowds and searing sun—although you should pack extra sunscreen just in case.

Stay here: Book a room at the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel , located in Williams right next door to the Grand Canyon Railway train depot. Here you'll be just a train ride—a very scenic train ride—away from the Grand Canyon, and you can avoid the long lines of traffic into the park. It’s even possible to charter an entire railway car complete with chefs and bartenders, ideal for milestone moments like graduation, family reunions, or birthday.

Williamsburg

Williamsburg, Virginia

One of our favorite weekend getaways from D.C. , Williamsburg is a great place to spend Memorial Day. The city stands in the middle of what’s dubbed the historic triangle (along with Jamestown and Yorktown), in a Virginia peninsula bookended by the James and York rivers. Aside from spending time outdoors in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown’s open-air museums, there are plenty of fun activities that signal the start of summer: kayaking, golfing, farmer’s markets in Yorktown, and, of course, a full day spent at Busch Gardens .

Stay here: Staying at one of the Colonial Williamsburg Resorts allows you to soak up all that history and culture even after the attractions close. The resorts are offering a Summer Getaway Package beginning in mid-May that comes with nightly accommodations, Busch Gardens tickets, passes to Colonial Williamsburg, and more.

San Juan PR

Puerto Rico

We’ve evangelized about Puerto Rico for many reasons in recent years, from the post-Hurricane Maria hotel renovations to the relatively low prices of round-trip airfares. While the island certainly warrants repeat visits, you can get a good taste of San Juan and its surrounding beaches in just three days . Walk around the capital city’s candy-colored historic district and sample classic Puerto Rican cuisine at Café Manolin, then rent a car and seek out some nature. It only takes about six hours to drive around the entire island, giving you ample time to visit sites like the idyllic Dorado Beach and El Yunque National Forest.

Stay here: Spend your nights (and part of your days) at the luxurious modern retreat that is Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve . After being greeted at check-in with tropical popsicles, you can expect huge rooms, cinematic views of the ocean, and a private butler to arrange helicopter tours and private yacht bookings.

New River Gorge Bridge West Virginia

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

May is considered the ideal month for  paddling high whitewater on the New River, and if you’re looking for an epic (and active) family getaway, look no further than America’s youngest national park,  New River Gorge . With an average high of 70 degrees throughout the month, it’s also an excellent time to hit the area’s many hiking trails (we love the 3.2-mile (round trip) jaunt to  Long Point , which features an excellent view of the impressive steel of New River Gorge Bridge). There’s loads of world-class  rock climbing in the park, too, as well as mellow opportunities to grab your  stand-up paddleboard and enjoy the sunset at Summersville Lake.

Stay here:  By far, the biggest game in town is  Adventures on the Gorge , which boasts everything from cozy glamping tents to deluxe four-bedroom cabins with private hot tubs (they’ve also got a tasty on-site restaurant overlooking the gorge that serves up standard Americana fare– Smokey’s ). Or, if you’ve got the whole crew in tow, snag an amenity-rich vacation rental like  The Paddle House or  The LilyPad .

Hotel Zena Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C.

Given the patriotic nature of the holiday weekend, our nation’s capital is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. Set aside time for the National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30 at 2 p.m., which ushers floats, marching bands, and veterans down Constitution Avenue. Then pay your respects at the various memorials and monuments on the National Mall, and book a table at one of the trendy restaurants near The Wharf. Come nighttime, the city’s abundance of stellar hotels will have you spoiled for choice.

Stay here: Open since October 2020, Hotel Zena is proving to be one of the buzziest hotels in the city. The hotel has branded itself with artsy women’s empowerment, from the portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg hanging in the lobby to the transparent reception desk filled with recycled high heels. Consider its Logan Circle location an added bonus.

Bermuda Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

You must admit, a long weekend spent lounging on pink-sand beaches and sipping rum swizzles sounds pretty perfect. That’s exactly what you’ll get (and then some) on a trip to Bermuda , which is an easy 90-minute, non-stop flight from New York. Despite its small size of about 21 miles long, the North Atlantic island is filled with tons of things to do , from helmet diving and nature reserve tours to excellent shops and restaurants. But if you want to spend most of your trip on those aforementioned beaches, we wouldn’t blame you a bit.

Stay here: On a hilltop overlooking a turquoise harbor, Rosewood Bermuda is the epitome of extravagance—there’s no better place to book if you want a trip of pure luxury and relaxation. The 92 rooms and suites are straight out of the pages of a design magazine, with crisp white linens on elegant four-poster beds, spa-like bathrooms with oversized soaking tubs, and large private balconies offering Atlantic views. You can also expect a championship-caliber golf course, several swimming pools, a full-service spa, and a private pink-sand beach in case you prefer your sunbathing with a side of exclusivity.

Cape May New Jersey

Cape May, New Jersey

There’s lots to love about Cape May. The town’s historic Victorian district is a perfect marriage of charm and history, and miles of intricate, candy-colored mansions make for prime early-morning-stroll viewing. And then there are the beaches. While the town itself has just over two miles of shoreline, you can find about 30 miles of white-sand, activity-packed beaches along the entire Jersey Cape. (Just note that everyone above the age of 12 must obtain a beach tag from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which can be purchased online .) Another big Cape May draw? Some of the best birdwatching in the country.

Stay here: The Blue Oasis beach house ( available on VRBO ) is one of our favorite small-town vacation rentals . The recently renovated home has four bedrooms and two spacious decks overlooking the water. It’s only a five-second walk from the back deck to the ocean, and you might even spot some humpback whales if you’re lucky (June to September are the true peak viewing months, but the entire season runs from March to December).

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho

There’s no wrong time to visit Yellowstone (yes, even in the dead of winter ), but this year marks the National Park’s 150th birthday —a great excuse to visit now if there ever was one. The landmark is a great one to explore by car, with most of the main attractions main attractions situated along the 142-mile Grand Loop Road. But if you want to dodge the crowds (and there most definitely will be crowds), pick one area and head off the main road along any of the 1,100 miles of trails. For example, you can head to the popular Mammoth Hot Springs and then try a moderate hike at the nearby Bunson Peak Trailhead; or see the Old Faithful geyser, then hop on the Mystic Falls Trailhead for a three-mile roundtrip hike to a 70-foot waterfall.

Stay here: A mere 10-minute drive from Yellowstone’s west entrance in Montana, Under Canvas Yellowstone is one of the best options for those who value location and convenience (and a whole lot of amenities) above all else. Each of the tents has a private deck, a private shower and toilet, and a wood-burning stove to keep warm when the sun goes down—plus, as with all Under Canvas properties, luxurious perks like organic bath products and West Elm furnishings.

Austin Texas

Rounding out our list of Memorial Day weekend getaways is Austin, a city that pulls out all the stops for the holiday—namely in the form of the Hot Luck Live Food & Music Festival (May 25–28). The festival is basically a combination of the city’s two favorite things: food and music. Dozens of local chefs will be cooking up some of their signature dishes (Aaron Franklin of Franklin’s Barbecue and Alon Shaya of Saba are two stand-outs), while DJ Jazzy Jeff and Superchunk will headline the musical performances. Even if you decide to skip the festival, Austin has enough breakfast tacos, hiking trails, line dancing, mezcal, and food trucks to keep you plenty busy all weekend.

Stay here: Just 10 minutes from downtown, Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection feels like a secret European escape with its English-style gardens and Italianate and Spanish Revival architecture. The rooms are bathed in custom pink wallpaper, vintage rugs, and soft velvet textiles, though the organic garden and swimming pool will certainly lure you outside. It’s the perfect spot to take a relaxed, meditative breath between jaunts into the city center.

Boca Chita Key at Biscayne National Park in FL

Biscayne National Park, Florida

Picture a sprawling saltwater bay full of psychedelic coral reefs, maze-like mangrove forests, quirky manatees, aquamarine water, and tropical islets. Are you picturing the Caribbean? Think again.  Biscayne National Park , on the southeastern edge of Florida, offers road trip access to sights typically seen on a far-flung island vacay. Schedule a  Sail, Paddle, Snorkel & Island Visit tour with Biscayne Bay Institute to soak up the best of the area’s history and scenery (trying to spot baby sharks and lobsters underwater). If you’ve got extra time, spend a day cruising down the sun-spattered  Overseas Highway to Key West and visit the historic  Hemingway Home .

Stay here:  To really take in that colorful Keys vibe that locals love to tout, stay at  Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection , and request a Bay Front Suite to sip your morning coffee as the sun’s glow hovers above the Atlantic surf. Or, if you’re feeling spendy, bed down at the ultra-romantic  Bungalows Key Largo , which boasts rows of private indoor/outdoor bungalows, porches with water views, and outdoor soaking tubs under the twinkling Milky Way.

Whidbey Island Deception Pass Washington

Whidbey Island, Washington

Just 30 miles north of Seattle sits Whidbey Island, the Pacific Northwest ’s answer to Nantucket. The 55-mile-long island is a mecca for outdoorsy folks, with enough water sports and hiking trails to plan an entire trip around—especially during late spring and early summer. To get a unique sense of space, book a tree-climbing excursion with AdventureTerra . With the help of ropes and a guide, climbers ascend the island’s Coastal Douglas Firs to reach the top of the forest canopy with a bird’s eye view of the famous Deception Pass Bridge and neighboring San Juan Islands.

Stay here: Originally built in 1907, the Captain Whidbey inn was rebooted in 2019—and it still remains our favorite place to stay on the island. The six-acre, 30-room property has its own private lagoon and dock, and the best way to arrive is by seaplane at dusk.

1873 Lighthouse Daufuskie Island South Carolina

Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

Daufuskie, a car-free historic island off Hilton Head, was once considered the Martha’s Vineyard of the South. It’s far more accessible now than in the past, and you can stay right on one of its beautiful beaches in either a converted mansion or an old lighthouse. Don’t leave before horseback riding on the beach, keeping an eye out for bottlenose dolphins somersaulting above the waves.

Stay here: Stay at the aforementioned 1873 Lighthouse at Haig Point, complete with two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound, plus access to the beach where you’ll never see more than a dozen people at one time.

Blue Lagoon

Iceland is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. While you can’t possibly see all of the country’s greatest hits in one long weekend, you can certainly get a good taste. Set up camp in Reykjavik, then rent a car and drive your way through the Golden Circle’s trio of iconic attractions: Thingvellir , Geysir, and Gullfoss.

Stay here: Iceland’s capital finally got the five-star hotel it deserves with the The Reykjavík Edition , a Hot List 2022 winner that opened about six months ago. The hotel is a mash-up of everything we love about Edition hotels with plenty of Icelandic flair: think an enormous undulating wall projection of the Northern Lights in the lobby, minibars stocked with local snacks, and a restaurant serving up Icelandic lamb loin and house-made coffee ice cream.

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki, Hawaii

With a large military population, Memorial Day is widely celebrated in Hawaii. Get a sampling of everything by staying near Waikiki Beach , a popular swim and surf destination that is only about 25 minutes away from Pearl Harbor by car. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial, pay tribute at the Remembrance Circle, and learn about the events of December 7, 1941, at interactive exhibits, then head back to the vibrant Waikiki community to shop, sunbathe, and relax.

Stay here: The retro-inspired Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is located right in the center of Waikiki, and offers artistic decor, an award-winning restaurant, and pool with custom tile spelling out “Wish You Were Here” at the bottom.

Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Ski season ends in Lake Tahoe after April, but the region still offers tons of great outdoor activities as the weather warms up. There really is something for everyone here, from hiking and biking to bird-watching and golf; or get on the water and explore the Lake Tahoe Water Trail , a 72-mile water route connecting public beaches with landing sites. For something extra special, take a “Lit Up After Dark” tour with Wild Society Adventures to experience the lake after dark from a clear-bottom kayak.

Stay here: North Lake Tahoe’s only waterfront resort, the Hyatt Regency , encourages outdoor play year-round, and new on-site adventure and wellness specialists can plan electric bike tours on the Tahoe East Shore Trail (great for sunset watching), painting classes among the pines, or morning meditations at the resort’s Water Garden.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 islands, the British Virgin Islands have no shortage of coastline to explore. To escape the crowds, seek out Sage Mountain, a notable landmark. Wandering among elephant ear vines and native trees, you’ll encounter tropical flora and fauna, while numerous lookouts offer views of sea and sky. Virgin Gorda is the third largest of the BVI, with natural beauty covering virtually all of its 8.5 square miles. The island offers quiet beaches and coves and flora-filled national parks. Perhaps the prettiest (and most popular) attraction, though, is the Baths, a seaside area where huge granite boulders form scenic saltwater pools and grottos.

Stay here: You can’t do better than Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, which reopened in early 2020 after a four-year renovation. You’ll be treated with a choice of 80 updated guest rooms, hiking trails across the island, and a new cliffside spa.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Colorado Springs

There are five military institutions in Colorado Springs, so Memorial Day weekend is always a city-wide celebration—and, as always, the beautiful scenery of Colorado is within easy reach. We’re still reeling with excitement from last year’s reopening of The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway , a 130-year-old train fresh off a multi-year, $100 million renovation. The railway is the highest in the country, taking guests above 14,000 feet to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Stay here: A favorite among our readers, The Broadmoor feels more like a grand hotel in the Alps than a domestic destination. Outdoor activities include horseback riding, golf, fly fishing, and hiking. (The 5,000-acre resort has its own waterfalls to make hiking even better.) This Memorial Day, be sure to order a pint of the Broadmoor’s own custom beer, the Prospector’s Pick Kolsch, which is made by a Veteran-owned brewery in Colorado Springs.

Niagara Canada

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

The Niagara Peninsula—a stretch of Ontario that borders the Great Lakes, about 90 minutes southeast of Toronto—offers hundreds of miles of scenic roads and waterways for the traveler who longs for some outdoor solitude. (In fact, this area is so serene, it seems almost impossible that Niagara Falls and the tens of millions of people who visit it every year are just a half hour down the road.) Anchor yourself in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake on the far east side of the region, then spend your days exploring. We suggest you rent a bike from Zoom Leisure and leisurely peddle along gorgeous lakes, waterfalls, and vineyards, and maybe even stop by a tasting room or two. Back in town, unwind at one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s excellent restaurants, wineries, or bakeries.

Stay here: If Victorian decor (without being fuddy-duddy, we should add) is your thing, Prince of Wales Hotel is the place for you. The hotel sits right on the main drag on Niagara-on-the-Lake, making it prime for those who’d prefer to stroll around rather than drive, while its British-inspired hospitality includes polite staff and afternoon tea service. The rooms feature floral wallpaper and four-poster beds, and amenities include an indoor pool, restaurant, lounge, and spa.

Get acclimated by learning about the deep horse racing history at the historic Keeneland Racecourse , popular for Kentucky Derby-qualifying races or explore the Kentucky River Palisades via a self-guided hike or by soaring 185 feet above the forest at 40mph with Boone Creek Outdoors ’ Zipline Canopy Tours. Rent bikes and ride through Kentucky’s famed rolling Bluegrass hills, passing by lush landscapes, historic bourbon distilleries and thoroughbred horse farms. South Padre Island, Texas

2.  South Padre Island, Texas

Situated right off the southern tip of Texas, South Padre Island is the only tropical island oasis you’ll find in the Lone Star State. This budget-friendly destination features 34 miles of coastline, 300-plus days of sunshine and a variety of activities and entertainment. The clear gulf waters are perfect for guided trips where you can scuba, snorkel, fish (and take advantage of a local Cook Your Catch program), and experience bottlenose dolphin sightings. As the “Sandcastle Capital of the World,” visitors can explore Sandcastle Trail where stunning works of sand art are always on display. If nature is more your thing, check out the SPI Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary and make sure to say hello to beloved residents, Big Padre and Lady Laguna. When it’s time to turn in, the shores of South Padre Island are dotted with vacation rentals as well as beachfront hotels and resorts—including the brand new Margaritaville Beach Resort South Padre Island that just opened this month.

Telluride, Colorado

3.  Telluride, Colorado

Telluride is a great spot to spend a winter vacation, but ask any local and they’ll probably tell you it’s the Colorado summers that’s kept them there. The towns of Telluride and Mountain Village are linked by the Telluride Mountain Village Gondola, a free 13-minute ride that’s the first public transportation system of its kind in the United States, providing access to tons of hiking and biking trails. As far as water activities, float through town on inner tubes, soar through the air on bungee trampolines at Mountain Village, or travel the waterways by kayak or stand-up paddle board. Known for non-stop festivals, Telluride hosts Mountainfilm over Memorial Day, which showcases documentary films that celebrate adventure, activism and social justice, among other topics. The Madeline Hotel & Residences , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, is the perfect base for your adventures in this area.

Boston, Massachusetts

4.  Boston, Massachusetts

For many northeastern cities, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer, and Boston is no different. It’s the start of patio dining at local restaurants, outdoor activities and other warm-weather pursuits—including Boston Calling , a massive, three-day music festival featuring headliners Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette and Paramore. Not into music? What about a Red Sox game? Or perhaps a visit to the Garden of Flags where 37,000 flags will be planted in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Boston Common to commemorate Massachusetts service members over the weekend. Book a stay at Four Seasons Hotel Boston , which overlooks America's first botanical garden and is unveiling a transformed lobby area, front drive and new restaurant just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

Palm Springs, California

5.  Palm Springs, California

Summer is in full swing here, meaning the temperatures are perhaps a bit too warm for most, causing it to be easier to find great deals on stays over the holiday weekend. Ideal for those who are looking to explore and rock climb, we definitely recommend finding accommodations with a pool to lounge by. The real highlight for visiting a post-Coachella Palm Springs is the Annual Memorial Day Air Fair and Flower Drop hosted by the Palm Springs Air Museum. Visitors will get the chance to experience the emotional moment when a B-25 aircraft drops thousands of red and white carnations from the sky commemorating those who gave their lives fighting for our country in World War II.

Memorial Day may mark the unofficial beginning of summer in the U.S., but it’s the days ahead of it that kick off big airport crowds.

The holiday symbolizes the beginning of the summer vacation season for many Americans. But it’s hardly a vacation for airport employees, who typically get pummeled with the largest crowds of the year to date.

Some days around the long weekend are significantly busier than others, and if you can afford to be flexible when flying Memorial Day weekend, you’ll save money and avoid chaos.

The best and worst days to fly Memorial Day weekend

NerdWallet analyzed the past three years of Transportation Security Administration checkpoint data for the six days before and six days after Memorial Day, which shows how many passengers were screened at TSA checkpoints.

For every year analyzed, the Friday before Memorial Day was the most-crowded day to travel before the holiday, which is observed on the last Monday of May. As far as post-holiday, the Sunday after has attracted the largest crowds over the past two years.

Based on the average number of passengers that flew each day of the past three years, here are the most- to least-crowded days for the 13 days surrounding Memorial Day (including the holiday), ranked:

Friday before.

Sunday after Memorial Day (most crowded).

Thursday before.

Memorial Day (Monday).

Friday after.

Thursday after.

Wednesday before.

Tuesday after.

Sunday before.

Saturday after.

Wednesday after.

Saturday before.

Tuesday before (least crowded).

When broken out by pre- and post-Memorial Day travel, here are the three least-crowded days to travel ranked from least to most crowded. These are likely the best days to fly around Memorial Day weekend.

Pre-holiday:

Tuesday before.

Post-holiday:

Why flying the Friday of Memorial Day weekend isn’t ideal

While the Friday before Memorial Day is always a big travel day, it was even bigger before the pandemic. For example, in 2019, the Friday before Memorial Day was the third-busiest day at U.S. airports for the entire year, losing only to the Sunday after Thanksgiving and the Sunday of Fourth of July weekend.

In 2023, the Friday before Memorial Day ranked among the top 20 busiest airport days of the year. It was also the busiest day of 2023 up until that point in the year.

Given that, check-in and security lines will likely be longer this year.

The smarter, cheaper Memorial Day weekend itinerary

If you work a standard Monday-Friday workweek and have the holiday off, then leaving Friday after work and returning the Sunday after Memorial Day might make sense. This minimizes the number of vacation days you take, and you’d get eight full days of vacation.

But if you follow the classic Friday-Monday weekend travel itinerary, then you’ll pay — in terms of literal price and airport crowds. Deviate from that schedule to find lighter crowds and perhaps better Memorial Day flight deals, too. Try these travel days instead:

Travel on Saturday: Rather than rushing out from work Friday afternoon, take that evening to pack, spend Friday night in your own bed and take an early flight out Saturday. Morning flights are often more reliable than evening flights.

Fly home the Wednesday after: A lot of people opt for traveling on Memorial Day itself, and many people fly the day after. But relatively few people extend their trip one more day and fly Wednesday.

If you do, you’ll avoid the worst of the airport crowds. You increase your chances of saving money on airfare . Plus, you’ll be home in time for a delightful two-day workweek — which might be just enough time to wrap up lingering tasks without getting fresh projects dumped on your desk.

Fly home the Saturday after: You can still have a weeklong vacation and avoid Sunday’s crowds by flying home the Saturday after Memorial Day.

Then you’ll have a full day at home to knock out laundry and meal prep before the next workweek starts. After all, sometimes the most relaxing way to end a trip is taking a vacation from that vacation.

Consider travel insurance

If you are forking out the big dollars to travel this Memorial Day, consider booking your trip with a card that has travel insurance or purchasing a supplementary policy from a third-party insurance provider, like Allianz or World Nomads .

Travel insurance can help you get money back for canceled or interrupted trips. It can also fund expenses like additional clothing if your luggage gets lost or an extra hotel room if you need to stay overnight due to a flight delay.

Read the policy, though, as many plans come to your rescue only if you experience a covered reason.

Looking for the perfect Memorial Day weekend vacation? From special commemorative events to large-scale music festivals, here are eight of the best destinations for Memorial Day weekend 2023.

Waterloo, New York

best trip memorial day weekend

In 1966, 100 years after the first Memorial Day ceremonies, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation recognizing Waterloo, NY, as the birthplace of Memorial Day. What better way to celebrate than visiting where the holiday began in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York?

Waterloo will hold its annual Celebrate Commemorate event over the holiday weekend, complete with a 5K run/walk, live entertainment, and a Freedom Parade. You can also pay a visit to the American Civil War Memorial and there’s even a National Memorial Day Museum in town.

How to Get There

The closest airports to Waterloo are Rochester (ROC) and Syracuse (SYR) . After landing at either airport, you’ll be about a one-hour drive from Waterloo. All major airlines fly into both airports including Southwest and JetBlue. There is also limited competition from ultra-low-cost carriers Allegiant and Frontier. You’ll find the most flight options flying into Rochester but it’s always best to check both to find the best deal.

Are You Booking Travel Far Enough in Advance?

San Francisco, California

San Francisco as seen through a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge

There’s plenty to do over the long weekend in San Francisco, from exploring the city’s vibrant Pier 39 to visiting the Golden Gate Bridge. Several Memorial Day services are held throughout the city, including the annual commemoration at the Presidio National Ceremony, held this year on May 29th. For naval history and aviation enthusiasts, pay a visit to the USS Hornet Museum , housed in the former navy vessel that recovered the Apollo 11 crew after splashdown following their famous lunar landing.

San Francisco Carnaval celebrates its 45th anniversary on May 27th-28th. Since 1978, this two-day festival has been celebrating “the diverse Latin American, Caribbean and African Diasporic roots of the Mission District and the San Francisco Bay Area” with musical performances, food vendors, educational resources, and more. The celebrations culminate in Grand Parade, which this year features more than 3,000 artists.

Skyscanner data shows that the average per passenger price for a round trip ticket to San Francisco over Memorial Day weekend is just $217. There are three major airports in and around the city— San Francisco International Airport (SFO) , Norma Y. Mineta San José International Airport (KSJC), and Oakland International Airport (KOAK). San Francisco International (SFO) is the closest to downtown and the most popular option for travelers staying in the city. United and Alaska Airlines have hubs at San Francisco International, with American Airlines and Delta also offering several domestic flights.

Arlington, Virginia

best trip memorial day weekend

A visit to the National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia is a great way to pay tribute and remember those who have served. There will be several remembrance ceremonies at the Memorial Amphitheater where thousands of visitors are in attendance each year. One of the most moving memorials in the cemetery is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which overlooks Washington D.C., providing a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified service members from World War I.

Directly across the Potomac River, you can also explore our nation’s capital by visiting several famous landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, or one of the Smithsonian Museums.

The Washington D.C. area has three major airports. For the most convenient option, you’ll want to look for flights into Reagan National Airport (DCA) , which is the closest to downtown D.C. (and has its own METRO station). United has a hub at Washington-Dulles Airport (IAD) and if you’re looking to fly Southwest, you’ll find the most options into Baltimore (BWI) .

Savannah, Georgia

best trip memorial day weekend

Head down to Savannah this Memorial Day Weekend and enjoy relatively moderate temperatures before the heat picks up during the peak summer months. Take a stroll around the historic district and enjoy its scenic cobblestone streets, elaborate architecture, and over 20 squares and parks full of ancient oak trees.

If you’re looking for a beach day, head over to Tybee Island where you’ll find expansive, sandy beaches in a family-friendly environment. It’s just 20 minutes east of downtown Savannah.

Flights to Savannah/Hilton Head Airport (SAV) have increased in recent years. Delta still carries the most passengers—primarily via its hub in Atlanta—however, budget carrier Allegiant has been a major factor in lowering fares to this regional airport with year-round and seasonal service from up to 13 different cities. Avelo Airlines also operates cheap flights out of New Haven to Savannah every Friday. As always, be sure to check Southwest when comparing prices and be flexible with travel dates as many budget airlines only fly on certain days of the week.

6 Things Tourists Should Never Do in Major Cities

Chicago, Illinois

best trip memorial day weekend

From kayaking along the Chicago River to enjoying fireworks at the Navy Pier, there’s plenty to do in Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend. You can dine at waterfront restaurants or hit the beach along Lake Michigan with the city skyline providing a magnificent backdrop. Chicago will also host a Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony and parade on Saturday, May 27.

Around two and a half hours west of Chicago, Summer Camp Music Festival will take place in the small town of Chillicothe, Illinois, from May 25-28. The 3-day festival features dozens of musical acts, including Willie Nelson & Family and Umphrey’s McGee. Don’t forget to stick around for Field Day , where attendees divide into teams to duke it out over tug-o-war, dodgeball, and more to win a special “Victory Party.”

Flights to Chicago are plentiful with all major airlines flying into Chicago’s O’Hare Airport (ORD) . United, which is headquartered in Chicago, has the most market share, but American is close behind with a hub of its own at O’Hare. Spirit Airlines also flies to Chicago from over 20 cities across the U.S., making all airlines compete with its ultra-low fares. Chicago’s Midway Airport (MDW) is where you’ll find flights on Southwest and, as of April 2022, Frontier has been operating low-cost flights into Midway. According to Skyscanner , average airfare per seat to Chicago is just $221 round trip over Memorial Day weekend.

New Orleans, Louisiana

best trip memorial day weekend

Well-known for Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest, New Orleans is also a great place to spend Memorial Day Weekend. The National World War II Museum is often rated the top attraction in New Orleans and it can be a great way to learn about the American experience in the war that changed the world.

Of course, you’ll also get to enjoy the vibrant nightlife of the French Quarter and the many tastes and sounds that make New Orleans one of the most cultured cities in America. If you’re a fan of festivals, The New Orleans Greek Fest will take place over Memorial Day Weekend with over 20 traditional homemade Greek pastries to try.

When looking for flights into Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport (MSY) make sure to check what’s available on Southwest Airlines as it is by far the largest carrier flying to/from New Orleans. Spirit Airlines helps to keep fares as low as possible with flights from up to 50 different cities and one of the newest airlines to hit the U.S. skies, Breeze Airways, offers low-cost flights from up to 16 cities across the nation.

The Worst Travel Advice We’ve Ever Heard

Indianapolis, Indiana

best trip memorial day weekend

Race car fans flock to Indianapolis over Memorial Day Weekend to experience the famous Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The main event takes place on Sunday, May 28, and is preceded by a kick off Miller Lite Carb Day concert on Friday, May 26.

If you’re bringing the kids, you can visit the expansive Children’s Museum , which recently opened a revamped Dinosphere exhibit in 2022 where you can learn all about the largest animals to ever roam the earth and be immersed in their prehistoric environment.

As with many airports in this list, Southwest is the largest carrier in Indianapolis (IND) so you’ll want to be sure to check its website to compare prices. Other than Southwest, you’ll find regular service on all three legacy carriers, American, Delta, and United, with Spirit Airlines and Allegiant providing the most service in the ultra-low-cost category.

Seattle, Washington

best trip memorial day weekend

Travel to the Pacific Northwest this Memorial Day Weekend and experience the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. The community-powered festival celebrates diversity and cultural expression and there is no admission charge—it runs purely on donations. The theme for 2023 is Lagom: Not Too Much, Not Too Little, But Just Right , drawing on the Scandinavian term “lagom” to celebrate people’s journey toward finding balance in life.

While in Seattle, you can also visit some of the city’s top attractions including The Museum of Pop Culture , a hike in Mt. Rainier National Park, or, one of my personal favorites, The Museum of Flight , where you can have a look inside a Concorde jet and a former Air Force One.

There’s no question which airline dominates in Seattle (SEA) . As Alaska Airlines’ largest hub, you’ll find the most flight options on this Oneworld alliance member. However, Delta has been making a push in Seattle over the past several years and has brought competitive pricing with its ability to connect travelers from all over the country. You can also find Alaska Airlines flights into nearby Paine Field Airport (PAE) in Everett.

Top 20 Memorial Day Weekend Destinations In The South

best trip memorial day weekend

HaizhanZheng  / Getty Images

Our unofficial kick-off to summer, by the time Memorial Day rolls around each year, we're practically begging for an excuse to get away. With the kids out of school and temperatures heating up, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to pack into the car and find your next adventure. Whether you want to enjoy a relaxing couple of days on a sunny beach , eat and shop your way through a bustling city , or seek cooler weather in the mountains , the South is full of wonderful places to spend Memorial Day weekend. It's never too early to start planning for (or dreaming about) your ideal vacation. Here are 20 destinations to consider as you start your search for the best Memorial Day getaway.

Ocean City, Maryland

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the sacrifices made by members of our armed forces. At the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum , you can learn about the history of Ocean City and the real-life predecessors of today's Coast Guard. Get the full story of the “Storm Warriors” of the United States Life-Saving Service, who stood watch to rescue sailors from ships wrecked offshore. Take in the Atlantic from Ocean City's miles of wooden boardwalks and sandy shoreline, and when you want a new perspective, seek the assistance of Odyssea Watersports to help you get out on the water. The family-owned company rents jet skis and pontoon boats. After a long day of fun in the sun, treat the family to diner at Hooked , a local favorite spot that's focused on farm- (and sea-) to-table eats. The Baked Crab Dip and Boom Boom Shrimp are must-orders.

Arlington, Virginia

Take time to pay your respects to the brave men and women who have fought and died for our country at Arlington National Cemetery . The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier lays to rest an unidentified World War I soldier; the memorial also honors other unknown soldiers from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Take advantage of the relatively mild temperatures of Virginia in May by exploring the Potomac Heritage Trail . The expansive trail system spans from the mouth of the Potomac River to the Allegheny Highlands through Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and DC. Choose a trail near you, then decide if you'd rather hike, bike, or paddle the route. Enjoy a hearty meal at The Liberty Tavern , a bustling restaurant in downtown Arlington known for its house-made pastas, nightly specialities like super-crunchy fried chicken on Mondays, and wood-fired pizzas.

Saint Augustine, Florida

Voted our South's Best Small Town in 2023 , there's never been a better time to visit this historic old-Florida town. Start your visit with a trip to Castillo de San Marcos , a 340-year-old former Spanish fort that's now managed by the National Park Service. Continue your tour of all things timeworn and weathered at the appropriately named Oldest House Museum , which features Florida's oldest house and its accompanying gardens and towering oak trees. For a true taste of the area, head to The Floridian . The laidback eatery serves delicious food and drinks inside its cheery dining room or expansive outdoor patio. Dinner options range from a refreshing Citrus Beet Salad to hearty Brisket "Posole" Verde. Wash it all down with a Swamp Pony, the restaurant's signature take on a mojito.

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

While other parts of the South are already deep in swelter season come mid-May, the Great Smoky Mountains maintains its fresh mountain air clear through the end of the month and into June, making it an ideal Memorial Day weekend destination. Plan your trip around a stay in Pigeon Forge, where there's plenty to do but often fewer crowds than in Gatlinburg . Families will love the roller coasters, rides, and other attractions at Dollywood theme park . The longtime favorite also hosts a number of nightly shows. If you can't get enough, buy tickets to the award-winning country music variety show Country Tonite Theatre , which features signing and dancing, as well as comedy and a few family-friendly surprises, too. Asheville, North Carolina

No trip to Asheville would be complete without three things: a visit to the Biltmore , a drive on Blue Ridge Parkway, and a craft beer at a local brewery. Start your Memorial Day getaway with a visit to the country's largest privately owned home and the original home of the Vanderbilt family. Tour each of the estate's meticulously decorated rooms, then spend an hour or two strolling through the vibrant, well-manicured gardens and grounds. For more of Asheville's stunning scenery, head to Blue Ridge Parkway, dubbed America's favorite drive . Consisting of more than 460 miles of views that include mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, you won't pick a bad place to start your journey, and when you're ready to stretch your legs, hikes (from easy strolls to challenging treks) abound. Known for having more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the country, an ice-cold brew is absolutely in order during your visit. Check out Highland Brewing Company (one of the city's first craft breweries ), Wicked Weed Brewing Company , or Burial Beer Co .

Savannah, Georgia

Let this Southern Georgia town charm you with more than just its iconic Spanish moss-covered live oaks and well-travelled cobblestone thoroughfare known as River Street. Spend a morning at Wormsloe Historic Site . The gorgeous avenue of live oaks that leads up to this colonial estate is beautiful enough for its own visit, but the museum, complete with costumed interpreters, is both educational and fun. If you want to learn more about Savannah's rich history, book a 90-minute walking tour with Free Savannah Tours. You'll receive excellent background on the city, plus get several thousand steps closer to your daily movement goal. Corpus Christi, Texas

This waterfront Texas town is filled with surprising delights. Start by visiting the Art Museum of South Texas , which is known for stunning modern art exhibits located right on the waterfront. After, learn about our country's military history at the USS Lexington Museum , a World War II aircraft carrier turned floating museum that is full of educational exhibits, including a flight deck with 20 aircrafts, a flight simulator, and a 3D theater. Go full-on island time at Black Diamond Oyster Bar , a 50-year Corpus Christi tradition that specializes in good vibes and great food. Start dinner with a Tiki drink like The Graduate or Viva La Vida, followed by oysters on the half-shell, and a fresh fried fish sandwich.

Panama City, Florida

Head to St. Andrews State park to swim, snorkel, kayak, canoe, fish, hike, observe wildlife, scuba dive, or simply relax on the sugar-white sands. If you want to head deeper out to sea, talk with the folks at Lagoon Pontoons . They rent pontoon boats, as well as double-decker boats and jet skis. You can also book a dolphin tour, fishing excursion, or sunset catamaran cruise. For a seafood dinner done right, head to Hunt's Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant . Find the cheery yellow house, and order from a menu of Florida beach classics like fried gator tail, smoked tuna dip, and seafood po'boys.

This ultra- casual, sandy foot-friendly restaurant is known for delicious shrimp and grits, Charleston fried green tomato BLT, and banana pudding.

Wilmington, North Carolina

This cinematic town on the Cape Fear River was voted our 2024 South's Best City on the Rise and has been the backdrop for countless movies and TV shows over the years. See some of the city's most stunning settings at Airlie Gardens , which features 76 acres of walking paths, gardens, and sculptures. After a walk around the gardens, head to the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial , a World War II battleship turned museum that's dedicated to telling the stories of the ship and those who worked on it. When you're ready to go from fresh to saltwater, visit one of three beaches within easy driving distance of Wilmington: Kure Beach, Carolina Beach, and Wrightsville Beach. Make dinner plans at Seabird , an elevated but still casual seafood spot by James Beard Semifinalist Dean Neff. The Seafood Tower is a gorgeous study in North Carolina seafood that's perfect for a small crowd.

Naples, Florida

It's all about getting—and staying—outdoors in this southwest Florida beach town. Explore the exotic by pulling up to Keewaydin Island (just off the coast of Naples) on boat and enjoying a day at the beach. Don’t bother packing a picnic basket—food boats (like a food truck but on the water), will come by. Find more outdoor adventure at Collier-Seminole State Park , where you can hike, bike, kayak, bird watch, and even camp for the night on 7,000 acres. Head to Seventh South , a restaurant that works with local vendors and farmers to bring only the freshest food to the table. The menu changes with the seasons, but expect creative dishes like Sticky Miso Short Ribs with sweet potato-goat cheese latkes and Portuguese Octopus with almond puree and black garlic aioli.

Biloxi, Mississippi

Start your trip in this Mississippi coastal town by checking out the Biloxi Lighthouse , which was erected in 1848 and is one of the nation's first cast-iron lighthouse. For $5 admission, you can take a guided tour of the lighthouse (daily from 9 to 10 a.m.) and get your photo with the city landmark. Take a boat ride with Biloxi Cruise Company , and choose the Biloxi Shrimping Trip. During the 70-minute cruise, you'll learn about the shrimping industry and even catch some Gulf Coast shrimp for yourself. After a day of adventure, relax on a patio with Creole-style cuisine fresh from the Gulf at Patio 44 . Folks love the Gouda Grits, Blue Crab Fondue, and Redfish on the Half Shell.

New Braunfels, Texas

You’d be amazed at some of the big names that have played here. Finish your day at Gristmill River Restaurant , a local restaurant that has been open since 1977 beneath the city’s iconic water tower. Enjoy live music and favorites like the Beef Tenderloin Sandwich and Spinach Artichoke Dip.

Annapolis, Maryland

Incorporated as a town in 1708, there's a lot of history behind the nation's first capital. The best way to learn it is on a kayak history tour with Paddle Annapolis . The two-hour guided tour takes paddlers along Spa Creek, and you'll hear historical facts all along the way. After, head to the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park , where you can learn all about the area’s rich maritime heritage and about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay through programs and exhibits. If breakfast for dinner is your favorite, head to Iron Rooster for breakfast options all day, as well as Lowcountry entrees and fresh seafood.

Charleston, South Carolina

There's never a bad time to visit our readers' perennial favorite Southern city . For a historic day in Charleston, book a carriage ride with Palmetto Carriage Works . Then, enjoy a meal and cocktails at Leon's Oyster Shop . You'll want to order a raw dozen, plus fried chicken and a frozen gin and tonic. Shopping on King Street, a stroll along Rainbow Row and through Charleston Waterfront Park, and a trip to the Gibbes Museum of Art are also well worth your time. If you're hoping to sneak a little beach time into your city-centric vacay, Sullivan's Island (a small barrier island just 10 miles from downtown) is more than ready to welcome you to its sandy shores.

New Orleans, Louisiana

After you've explored the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, and other major areas of the Crescent City, do something a little outside the box and visit Celebration Distillation , a local rum distillery that uses locally sourced Louisiana sugar cane to produce its rum. There’s a complimentary shuttle to the distillery, and you’ll get a sample, too! If you want to gain a deeper understanding of New Orleans, take a tour with Cajun Encounters Tour Company . You can choose from a swamp tour, city bus tour, plantation tour, ghost tour, or walking tour of the city. The Big Easy is known for its delicious dining options , and you can experience the best of it all at Cochon , a rustic restaurant and butcher known for its traditional Creole flavors. Start your meal with house-cured charcuterie and sausage, then choose from specialty sandwiches like the Cochon Muffaletta and the Porchetta Cheese Steak.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Kick off a patriotic Memorial Day weekend by visiting Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville. The incredible historic site features a house and plantation, a museum and research institute, a presidential library, and so much more. It’s a must-see if you’re in town. After, unwind by touring another of Charlottesville's best attractions—its many wineries. Sign up for a tour with Tipsy Wagen Tours and you'll have the opportunity to visit three wineries in a one-of-a-kind ride, a 1972 Volkswagen Transporter Bus. After your tasting, head to to Oakhart Social for a flavorful meal of modern American dishes with international influence. Favorites include the Fermented Fresno Sausage with potato purée, pork bone jus, and Swiss chard and the Hanger Steak with Korean chili aioli, chimichurri, and fingerling potatoes.

Pack your patience: The busiest air, road travel times for this weekend

Travelers, prepare yourselves for an incredibly busy Memorial Day weekend.

This year, the peak travel weekend is going to be a hectic one, according to travel app Hopper’s latest report . AAA also said it will be the “third busiest Memorial Day weekend” in over two decades.

Most people will travel by plane. U.S. airports are expected to be packed between Thursday and Monday. This year’s Memorial Day weekend is seeing a 17% increase in seat capacity from last year’s.

“We're seeing strong demand for MDW with nearly 17 million passengers scheduled to depart from U.S airports this coming weekend,” Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper, told USA TODAY in an email. “Demand remains high for summer, particularly for international travel, as many popular destinations were still closed for tourism this time last year.”

More: Memorial Day weekend travel may be busier than last year. Here's what to know

Many travelers are hoping to fly internationally this holiday weekend or extend their travels into Tuesday for an even longer trip, the Hopper report said. Low last minute domestic airfare also adds to the mix.

Unfortunately, the weekend is just setting the tone for an equally chaotic summer of traveling .

“Expect long lines and potential disruptions over this first peak summer weekend as airlines and airports work to manage schedules as we head into the busiest time of the year for travel,” Berg added.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a press briefing Tuesday that airlines' on-time performance has improved in the last few months.

In the first three months of 2023, cancellations were below 2%, lower than last year's cancellation rate of 2.7%, according to the Department of Transportation .

"And so far, this May, we're seeing those numbers hold," Buttigieg said. "But this weekend will be a test of the system."

When will airports be the busiest this weekend?

There are three days out of this weekend where you should expect long lines at airport security and possible disruptions. Most airports will be busy during the morning or early evenings.

Most travelers are going to depart for their weekend trips on Thursday and Friday. The latter is slated to be the busiest travel day, with over 3.5 million airplane seats expected to be filled by passengers.

People are expected to return home Memorial Day on Monday, so anticipate crowds at the airport.

Which airports are going to be busiest this Memorial Day weekend?

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is expected to be the most crowded airport this weekend, especially during the morning, according to Hopper analysts. Over 1.1 million passengers will be departing from this hub, the report said.

Other crowded airports include: Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Denver International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport, all slated to see around 700,000 departing passengers.

"If there's an issue, we have your back," Buttigieg said, adding that passengers can always check the online DOT Dashboard on flightrights.gov .

When will the roads be busiest this weekend?

To avoid crowded airports and save money, many travelers will hit the roads. About 37.1 million U.S. travelers are going on a road trip for Memorial Day weekend, about 6% more than last year. Drivers should prepare for rush hour traffic-induced delays, especially around major metropolitan areas.

“Gas prices are lower this holiday compared to last year, when the national average was more than $4 a gallon,” AAA said. “Despite the lower prices at the pump, car travel this holiday will be shy of pre-pandemic numbers by about 500,000 travelers.”

Like the airports, roads are going to be most crowded on Friday afternoon as people set off for their destination. Transportation analytics firm INRIX said the best time to travel by car is on Thursday and Friday before 1 p.m. and noon, respectively. If you can, consider even traveling on Saturday or Sunday for the lightest traffic.

When heading home, aim for Monday morning before 10 a.m. Once it hits noon and 3 p.m., traffic will pick up. “Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic,” INRIX transportation analyst Bob Pishue said in a statement. “Our advice is to avoid driving during peak hours or use alternative routes.”

Last-Minute Memorial Day Travel Deals

Book a dreamy weekend getaway for less with cheaper prices on flights and other vacation costs.

woman smiling holding an American flag

The unofficial kickoff to summer is almost here.

Technically, the season doesn’t start in the U.S. until June 20. But for most Americans, the sight of red, white and blue flags snapping in the breeze on Memorial Day marks the start of summer .

If you’re thinking about traveling over the three-day weekend , experts say it’s not too late to find travel deals.

Memorial Day flight deals

Christie Hudson, senior public relations manager for Expedia Group, says Memorial Day flights tend to cost about $50 less than flights around July 4.

Hudson suggests booking flights departing on the Thursday or Friday morning before Memorial Day (May 27) and returning on Sunday or Tuesday to avoid holiday crowds.

Travel agent Angela Hughes, CEO of Trips & Ships Luxury Travel agency, says flying midweek is a good way to save on airfare. “I also suggest packing light and doing carry-on only . You’ll save money, and you don’t have to worry about the airline losing your bag.”

Hudson says New York , Los Angeles and Miami are popular Memorial Day weekend destinations that have more affordable airfare. “Average ticket prices [are] under $500.”

Memorial Day weekend travel deals

Although accommodations are on the more expensive side during this time, some hotel brands offer deals specific for the long weekend .

Vacations by Marriott is promoting weekend trip packages for destinations around the world. Westgate Resorts has deals at several properties across the country, including in New York City, Orlando , Florida, and Williamsburg, Virginia. In addition to considering discounted rates, Hughes advises vacationers to compare perks at properties before booking to save money. “Look for free hotel amenities like free parking, free Wi-Fi or free breakfast. I also suggest being a member of hotel loyalty programs and maybe using your points.”

Memorial Day destinations for deals

Thinking of traveling outside the country? Hudson says Memorial Day weekend is a good time to visit Mexico and the Caribbean before temperatures get too hot. “Cancun is one of Expedia’s top destinations with average ticket prices under $500 for the long weekend.”

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

Before booking, make sure you research travel advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State. The agency may recommend reconsidering travel — or not traveling at all — to some places in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Edgartown Harbor on the eastern end of the Martha's Vineyard

Travelers looking for an island getaway a little closer to home may want to consider a trip to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket in Massachusetts, Hughes says. Both islands open for the season during the holiday weekend and offer a mix of luxury accommodations and affordable things to do. On Martha’s Vineyard, the 29th annual Vineyard Artisans Festivals are free and feature new artwork from island artists, plus demonstrations and activities for kids. In Nantucket, the free Memorial Day parade winds throughout the historic downtown and ends with a ceremony at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Here are more destinations to consider to observe Memorial Day on a budget.

National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas

Museums and music in Fredericksburg, Texas

The National Museum of the Pacific War , a Smithsonian Affiliate, pays tribute to those who fought in Pacific Ocean battles during World War II ($24; $16 for people 65 and older; WWII veterans free). The on-site Memorial Courtyard and Japanese Garden of Peace are free to visit. You’re a 15-minute drive from the legendary country music community of Luckenbach, where you can hear live music for free and enjoy the casual (OK, ramshackle) surroundings.

Stay: The Comfort Inn and Suites is a pet-friendly hotel with an outdoor pool. Rooms start at $175. Also consider: Full Moon Inn Bed & Breakfast.

aerial view of a beach in Oahu

Sandy beaches and hula dancing in Honolulu

Although a trip to the island of O‘ahu is going to be on the pricier side, it’s free to enjoy the gorgeous beaches of Waikīkī . There’s a free hula show at the Kūhiō Beach area of Waikīkī every Tuesday and Saturday night.

No trip to O‘ahu is complete without a visit to Pearl Harbor National Memorial to pay your respects to fallen war heroes. Admission is free.

Stay: Prices are high in Hawai‘i , so Hughes recommends booking off the beach in Waikīkī to save money. The Vive Hotel is three blocks from the beach and includes breakfast, Wi-Fi and beach gear rental. Rates start at $252. Also consider: The Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach.

fireworks at Chicago's Navy Pier

Free fireworks on a Great Lake in Chicago

The Windy City has museums, memorials and attractions to celebrate America’s military. Navy Pier, opened in 1916 as Municipal Pier, was renamed in 1927 to honor naval veterans of World War I and served as a training center for the Navy during World War II.

Chicago has a series of beautiful beaches along Lake Michigan. Or take an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River to see the city’s skyline. For a true taste of the town , try a Chicago hot dog (a beef dog with mustard, onions, relish, a pickle spear, sport peppers, tomato and celery salt; no ketchup allowed).

Chicago’s free annual summer fireworks series begins May 25. Head to Navy Pier and the lakefront early to get a spot to see the show.

Stay: The Whitehall Hotel is part of the Best Western Premier Collection and half a block from shops and restaurants on Michigan Avenue. Rates start at $202. Also consider: Hotel Versey Days Inn by Wyndham.

And if you use our PTO Hacker you can figure out how to get the most time away for only a few days of your valuable PTO… So, whether the beach is calling your name or you’re yearning to find yourself in the bustling city or vast mountains, these are some of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways you can book.

PTO Hacker 2024: turn 15 days of paid time off into 53 with these easy public holiday hacks

Hack the weekend.

You may think a weekend isn’t long enough to go sightseeing in foreign lands (or states) and enjoy yourself – but you’re wrong! You’d be surprised at how much you can fit into a weekend if you really want to.

But if you’re not convinced, then hack it instead! Seeing as Memorial Day is a federal holiday, you’ll get Monday the 27th off work, and if you want to really savor the time off, why not turn it into a whole week by booking only 4 days off! By doing this you can bag yourself a total of 9 days off – is that amazing or what?

Maybe you want to travel local and discover other states (the US is certainly big enough to spend a lifetime discovering), or you can venture up north to Canada or down south  to Mexico for a taste of similar but other worlds. And if you really want to push the boat out 9 days is plenty for a whizz around Europe !

2. Oaxaca, Mexico

Mexico is the quintessential US getaway destination: different enough that you get to experience a new world for a few days, but close enough that you can avoid long-hauls – it really is ideal.

Fill up on the amazing Mexican food and make your belly happy, sample some local stars like tequila and mezcal, and take advantage of the white sand beaches and turquoise waters. The nightlife here is everything as well: live music, colourful string lights, and dancing locals.

If you’re a forward planner and a fan of girl math , why not check out our Yucatan Highlights trip for 2025? By the time you travel, it’ll be totally free (if we use our girl math calculations), so your Memorial Day weekend getaway will be extra special.

3. New York City, New York

For those who are fond of busy cities and highstreet window-shopping, you can’t go wrong with a trip to New York City. Make your visit as long or as short as you like, you’ll never run out of things to do in the city that never sleeps.

It’s ideal in May because you’ll get some warm weather while avoiding peak summer humidity. Picnics and bike rides in Central Park, a few shows on Broadway, and fantastic dinners in all the boroughs. This is the perfect contender for any getaway, any time of year; New York City always just seems to shine.

4 hidden spots in New York you have to visit

4. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The start of summer isn’t official until you’ve taken a trip to the Cape, so it seems fitting you’d head here for your Memorial Day weekend getaway. Charming small towns built up with traditional New England wood panels, plenty of lighthouses keeping you company in the dark, and of course many, many , boats.

Cape Cod is very popular so there will be vacation rentals aplenty, and other rental companies if you want to take a boat into the sea or forget your beach chairs. You can spend hours lazing around the beach and nearby dunes, and head back to Provincetown or Brewster or Chatham or whatever adorable town you’ve taken up temporary residency in, in the evening. And don’t you dare forget to indulge in fresh lobster and clam chowder!

5. Port Antonio, Jamaica

The first of the Caribbean nations on this list, how can you resist spending a long weekend on an island close to paradise? Port Antonio is an absolute stunner of a destination and you won’t be disappointed by choosing to spend your Memorial Day weekend getaway there.

Colourful towns are complemented by tropical landscapes – I mean you’re basically in the jungle! Mountains and waterfalls on one side and the bluest of blue water on the other, Port Antonio is one of those rare locations around the world that just fills you with joy as soon as your feet touch down. You can visit the Folly Ruins if you’re in the mood for some history, or go rafting in the Blue Lagoon if you’re feeling adventurous.

14 of the best summer destinations in Europe you need to visit this year

6. gustavia, st. barts island.

Saint Bathélemy, also known as St. Barts, is the perfect place to visit if you want to pretend you’re in the French Riviera without jetting all the way there. The island is French-speaking so all establishments will have French names like the popular restaurant La Petite Plage or the gorgeous hotel Cheval Blanc.

Gustavia is an affluent area of the region, kind of like France’s St. Tropez, so prepare to experience some glitz and glam. But amidst all the luxury you’ll still be able to find some lowkey hangs and take things at your own pace. Beautiful beaches (like Shell Beach) flanked by the distant view of volcanoes and reefs – it doesn’t get much better than this.

USA Road Trip

8. New Orleans, Louisiana

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your Memorial Day weekend, then it’s time to visit New Orleans. Split your time between swamp and city and experience the deep history and the incredible culture of the area. Between ghost tours, plantation tours, local rum distillery visits, and eating your way through the French Quarter and Bourbon street, you’ll 100% have your hands full – but you won’t complain a bit.

9. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Explore the great outdoors over Memorial Day with a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The heart and soul of America, some may say, you could get lost here (literally) for days and. You may even risk asphyxiation by how breathtaking all the natural beauty is!

Hit up Jackson Lake, Old Faithful, and the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring for some pure wanderlust, and after that stop by the Grizzly Bear and Wolf Discovery Centre to get up and close with these furry guys in a truly ethical wildlife experience. You’ll get a well-deserved breath of fresh air in this jewel of the West.

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons

10. The Outer Banks, North Carolina

Last but not least on this list of Memorial Day weekend getaways is the Outer Banks: a site for the curious traveller! Steeped in history, and a little bit of mystery, you can have a great time in this area of North Carolina by exploring the dunes, the lighthouses, and the shipwreck sites.

It’s also the setting for Netflix’s show Outer Banks (who knew!), so if you’re a fan you can go ahead and live your best Pogue or Kook life! Fans of American Horror Story will also be pleased as the nearby Roanoke Island was the site of England’s first settlement in the US which disappeared and inspired a particularly gory 6th season of the show…

The history of Memorial Day and when the holiday is observed in 2024

best trip memorial day weekend

As spring continues, it brings us closer to Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer.

If you’re already sorting out your holiday plans or brainstorming how to spend your three-day weekend, here’s what you should know about Memorial Day’s origin and meaning.

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day began under the name “Decoration Day” in 1868 — three years after the Civil War ended — and was declared a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers and otherwise honor those who died while serving in the United States military, according to the  U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

It is one of 11 permanent federal holidays observed in the U.S. The 10 other federal holidays observed annually are:

  • New Year’s Day on January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January
  • Washington’s Birthday, or Presidents Day, on the third Monday in February
  • Juneteenth on June 19
  • Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, on July 4
  • Labor Day on the first Monday in September
  • Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day, on the second Monday in October
  • Veterans Day on Nov. 11
  • Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November
  • Christmas on Dec. 25

When is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May. This year, the holiday falls on Monday, May 27.

Looking ahead at graduation season: When is graduation? Here's the latest 2024 commencement breakdown across Delaware colleges

History of Memorial Day

On May 5, 1868, Gen. John Logan officially ordered that May 30 be designated as a day of remembrance for those who died serving in the Civil War. It is believed this date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. By 1890, all Northern states recognized the holiday, but Southern states chose to honor those who died in the Civil War on separate days.

This divide continued until the holiday changed after World War I to honor Americans who died fighting any war, not just the Civil War.

In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day after Gov. Nelson Rockefeller made a similar declaration that same year.

By the end of the century, Memorial Day ceremonies were held on May 30 throughout the country, the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observances at their facilities and state legislatures passed proclamations designating the day.

In 1972, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress,  the Uniform Monday Holiday Act , and placed on the last Monday in May, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The act also established other federal holidays like Presidents Day and Columbus Day on Mondays.

In 2000,  the National Moment of Remembrance Act  was signed into law by Congress and the president, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance.

It encourages all citizens to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence, according to  Congress.

I’m looking for a clean, nice, updated hotel with two QUEEN beds near Playa Norte preferably but will venture off for the right accommodation that can accommodate 2 adults and 1 child.

All of the nicer hotels appear to be adults only. I considered Ixchel but they only have standard rooms with double beds. Any suggestions around $400/night or less for May 24-28? Did I miss out?

best trip memorial day weekend

Just checked and since you mentioned Ixchel, it does have a two bedroom suite for $315 US. One king, and second bedroom is two doubles. Ocean view. Kitchen, seating area. Found this on the hotels official website. Have a great time wherever you end up!

@SKclark, did you find that on their website available those dates or on another site? The only thing that comes up for me is the standard room on their website as available. Interested if available.

Cypig, looks like those dates are now unavailable for the suite. Have you looked on Vrbo or Airbnb? We’ve found some great rentals there for under $300 US.

Where to take Mom to see spring flowers Mother's Day weekend

Nothing goes better with Mother’s Day than flowers, especially tulips.

Northeastern Wisconsin has a variety of picturesque displays where mom — and the whole family — can get into the spring spirit. Below are five spots where where you can marvel at the first flowers of the season.

Green Bay Botanical Garden

Green Bay Botanical Garden boasts “the largest spring blooms display in Wisconsin,” with more than 350,000 blooms. Here, you can see tulips, daffodils, magnolias, flowering perennials, shrubs and more.

A news release says the garden anticipates the flowers to be in peak bloom on Mother’s Day. And if that’s not sweet enough, moms can enjoy free admission on this special day.

The Green Bay Botanical Garden, 2600 Larsen Road, Green Bay, will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mother's Day.

The Paine Art Center and Gardens

In honor of Mother’s Day, The Paine is offering free admission on Sunday, May 12. Mom can enjoy its Spring Tulips Showcase; its website says there are over 10,000 tulips in the formal garden alone.

She’ll also want to check out the exhibition of artist Mao Lor’s Hmong textiles, which The Paine’s website says “convey the vitality of Hmoob art, history and culture.”

Plus, Brewing Futures Mobile Cafe will be near the Carriage House with light food and beverages from 10 a.m. until noon.

Mother’s Day hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Paine is at 1410 Algoma Blvd, Oshkosh.

Tulip beds near Neenah's Washington Park

We consider this a “hidden gem” of spring displays in the Fox Valley. Across from the main entrance of Neenah’s Washington Park, you’ll find multiple flower beds filled with tulips, along with a great view of the water. For those with children who need to burn off some energy, the park’s playground (which has a number of inclusive features ) and trails may make this the best option.

Washington Park is at 631 Winneconne Ave., Neenah.

This weekend, just in time for Mother’s Day, Blaser’s Acres is hosting its first tulip festival. Guests can marvel at over 20,000 tulips, bring home some flowers of their own from the greenhouse, take advantage of photo opportunities  and more. Admission is $3, but children younger than 2 can attend for free.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Blaser’s Acres, 2556 School Lane, Green Bay.

The Scheig Center Gardens at Appleton Memorial Park

The Scheig Center Gardens are open year-round, and are ushering in new blooms as spring arises. Across the lush green landscape you’ll find pops of color, including pink and orange tulips, magnolias, other trees and shrubs.

The park offers multiple amenities other than the gardens, including an inclusive playground, baseball/softball diamonds, trails and more.

According to the Appleton Parks and Recreation’s website , the gardens are open year-round from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and admission is free. The park is at 1620 E. Witzke Blvd., Appleton; follow signs to the gardens.

When Is Memorial Day in 2024? Here's What to Know About the Holiday

It's so much more than a weekend for grilling!

preview for 7 Things Most People Don't Know About Memorial Day

But Memorial Day isn't just any old day off work. Beyond the barbecue and beach trips lies a day of profound significance as the federal holiday marks a thoughtful day of observance, centered on remembering and thanking the millions of Americans in uniform who gave their lives for this country.

In order to properly pause, reflect, and pay your respects to the soldiers to whom we owe our many freedoms, you'll have to know: When is Memorial Day in 2024? And more importantly, what's the backstory behind this very significant holiday and when did it actually become an official holiday in the United States?

Ahead, you'll find answers to these questions, including the exact date for this year's commemoration, so you can plan your patriotic activities accordingly.

When is Memorial Day in 2024?

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 27, 2024 . Yes, this makes it a long weekend! (Possibly *the* long weekend of all long weekends! 🙌) For reference, that means you can officially begin your Memorial Day weekend activities starting Saturday, May 25.

Is Memorial Day always the last Monday in May?

You bet! It's one of those holidays that doesn't have a specific calendar date, but instead falls on the last Monday in May every year. That means that next year, the holiday will fall on Monday, May 26, 2025. So if you didn't know before, now you do!

What is the history of Memorial Day?

Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, but it had previously been observed in an unofficial capacity for quite some time. A similarly thoughtful, commemorative day reportedly took place all the way back on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. The History Channel reports that after the Civil War ended and Confederate soldiers left Charleston, a group of freed slaves gathered to bury and honor the bodies of Union soldiers via a small parade. And in 1868, Union General John A. Logan suggested that May 30 should be the first annual day dedicated to the memory of all soldiers who fell during the Civil War.

Is everyone off on Memorial Day?

Good question! According to the Library of Congress : In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was finally passed, which both declared that Memorial Day would take place on the last Monday in May and required that federal employees be granted a day off (which is why it's a good idea to check open stores on Memorial Day before you head into town).

But it took time to get there. It wasn't until 1950 that Congress would agree upon a resolution asking the president to "issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Memorial Day, by praying, each in accordance with his religious faith, for permanent peace." In 1971, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday intended to observe and honor the people who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military.

And if you're interested to learn more, read about the holiday's official flower, the Memorial Day red poppy , and how to honor our country by properly displaying the American flag .

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer as school kids are on break and family’s plan the annual vacation and other summertime activities.

Officially, Memorial Day honors Americans who have died in armed conflicts over the last 248 years.

This year Memorial Day is observed on May 27.

The history of Memorial Day

“Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers,” read a website from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA).

Since the Revolutionary War ended, more than 600,000 American troops have died in battle and more than 539,000 died from non-combated related causes, according to Military.com .

Decoration Day ceremonies evolved for the remainder of the 1800s and well into the 1900s. In 1971 Decoration Day was changed to Memorial Day as Congress declared the last Monday in May as the national holiday, according to the U.S. Veterans Administration.

What is closed and open Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is one of 11 federal holidays recognized by the U.S. government, according to Federalpay.org.

“All non-essential federal government offices are closed on Memorial Day, and all federal employees are paid even if they receive the day off,” stated the website.
