How to get fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is a vast, complex beast and sometimes you won’t want to lug your horse halfway across the continent to start a mission. This is where having a method of fast travel comes in handy. While there’s no way of teleporting to discovered locations at any time from the map, there are several methods of transport that’ll certainly prove speedier than a horse.

Below we’ve put together a list of all the fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock them.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Here’s how you can unlock fast travel:

• You won’t be able to unlock fast travel until you start Chapter 2 in the main story.
• The first step is to complete the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins”. Hand in your first debt, and you’ll be taught how the ledger can be used to upgrade your camp.
• When you’ve got a free moment and enough camp cash, open up the ledger and flick to the Lodgings section. Upgrade it once, and you’ll have to the option to upgrade Arthur’s tent. Do this and you’ll unlock fast travel.

To use fast travel, go round the back of Arthur’s tent and view the map that’s there. Select a location that you’ve visited before and you’ll magically appear there along with your main horse.

Other methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two other ways of getting around the map quicker than normal: Stagecoach and train.

Unlocking fast travel from your camp is not a prerequisite! You can use these modes of transport from the beginning of Chapter 2.

How to use a stagecoach

• There’s a signpost icon near all the major towns and cities in the game, and this is where you’ll find a stagecoach.
• As long as you’ve been to a certain location previously, you can pay a fare to use the stagecoach to visit that specific destination.
• If the signpost symbol is locked and greyed out, this means you’re unable to use the stagecoach until after you’ve dismounted from your horse or exited a mission state.

How to use a train

• At most larger towns and cities there is an envelope icon. Head on over to these locations and you’ll be able to catch a train.
• Using the train, you can travel to any destination on the list from the very beginning of Chapter 2. It’s also cheaper than the stagecoach too.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 finally touched down in October last year, it had been long-awaited ( and long-delayed ). If it didn’t live up to our sky-high expectations after all of that, Rockstar were going to have a riot on their hands.

Fortunately, all was well. It was a phenomenal sales success, one of the best-received games of the year by critics and players alike. Why? Largely because it’s a vast, ambitious title that sets new standards for open-world gameplay.

This is great and all, but it also means one thing: fast travel is going to be a necessity. Yes, you can unlock fast travel in the game, but how, where and when? Stick around, friend, and we’ll explain everything.

10 10. It’s A Lifesaver In This Huge World

In recent years, just about everyone’s been getting in on the whole open world thing. Titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Skyrim defined what it meant to offer players a huge, sandbox world to explore, and the bar’s been raised repeatedly since.

Horizon Zero Dawn , The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and others have advanced these concepts, but Red Dead Redemption 2 presents a world of dizzying scale. It’s set across five fictitious U.S. states (New Austin and West Elizabeth from the original game, plus the all-new Ambarino, Lemoyne and New Hanover), which combine to create a world map you do not want to be constantly charging back and forth across on your horse alone.

9 9. Wait A While To Unlock Fast Travel

So, yes. All titles with fast travel tend to handle it differently, but these tend to be variations on a familiar theme. Often, you can only instantly travel to locations you’ve visited before (think Fly in the Pokémon series ), and you have to unlock the ability to do so in some way.

Red Dead Redemption 2 ticks both of these boxes. It’ll be a little while before you’re able to fast travel, and the ability to do so is hidden away. It’s so obscure, in fact, that many players stumbled upon it purely by accident. Sometimes quite late in the game, to boot.

To get you off to the best start, we’re going to take a look at the earliest possible point you can unlock this vital function.

8 8. Complete The ‘Money Lending And Other Sins’ Mission

Money Lending And Other Sins is the ninth mission of chapter two. It becomes available a good way into the game, once you’ve unlocked the open world and gotten a good taste of just how much this game has to offer.

This particular mission sees you collecting valuables from those who owe your gang money. After completing it, you’ll earn the ability to upgrade your camp. These upgrades may sound a little unsubstantial, but they’re the key to unlocking fast travel. You could easily miss that, as there’s very little fanfare, but this is where the functionality is hidden.

7 7. Arthur’s Tent Is The Key

The first upgrade you’ll want to make is to your lodgings. They look a little less-than-wonderful at first, after all, so that’s probably something you were shooting for anyway.

After doing so once, you’ll be able to upgrade Arthur’s tent. What does this do? Well, mainly, it adds a handy-dandy map to the tent (or, more specifically, somewhere in the base near Arthur’s tent). Take a look at it, and you’ll be able to pick a destination from a handy list of places you’ve already visited. Simply pick somewhere, then, after the obligatory transitional scene, there you are. It’s that easy.

6 6. You Can Only Fast Travel Directly From Your Camp

That makes it sound super simple and convenient, didn’t it? You might think that, after unlocking the feature, you can effortlessly hop into a menu screen and warp from one fast travel destination to another as you please. Sadly, friends, the Wild West isn’t that kind.

While Rockstar felt the need to provide the player with a quick means of traversing this huge world, they also wanted to keep things a little authentic. As such, you can’t just go warping around willy-nilly like it’s Zelda or something. You must be stationed at that map in your camp every time you fast travel, as you can only do so from there.

5 5. Unlocking Fast Travel Is Pretty Darn Expensive

If you’re a Grand Theft Auto Online player (as much of the darn known universe has been over the years), you’ll know that, outlaw or not, you’ve got to work for your money. You can’t just boot the game up for the first time and rule the criminal underworld right from the start. It’s a rags to ill-gotten-riches story.

The same’s true of Red Dead Redemption 2 . Money’s pretty tight for Arthur and his gang, especially early on. You might be itching to unlock fast travel as soon as possible, but it doesn’t come cheap.

As VG247 reports, the upgrade to the lodgings costs $220, and the all-important map is another $325. This is a substantial amount whichever way you slice it, and it’s advised that you earmark some of the earnings from that first big heist for this purpose. It’ll pay dividends in the long run.

4 4. Fast Travel Is A One-Way Trip

As I say, Rockstar have implemented a fast travel system that makes things much more convenient for the player, but also tries to keep things as in-universe and immersive as possible. What does this mean? It means that there are some real limitations to it, that’s what it means.

Cost aside, here’s another: while you can quickly travel from your base to your destination of choice, you can’t fast-travel from said destination back to your base. You’ll be making your own way back to the camp whatever happens, so you’d better be sure that you’ve planned out your journey.

It’s not easy being a Wild West outlaw, as Clint Eastwood will tell you.

3 3. You Cannot Leave Your Horse Behind

If dogs are man’s best friend (and the billions of videos of them on social media would suggest so), what about horses? Let’s stop for a moment here and consider where the Wild West would be without them. What the Lone Ranger’s catchphrase would’ve been, if he couldn’t Hi-ho on Silver? It just doesn’t bear thinking about.

As a Western-themed title, you’d better believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 takes its horses super-seriously. So much so that you can’t fast-travel at all if your faithful steed isn’t in the vicinity. You arrive at the destination you choose riding said horse, you see, which means that they have to be there and ready for the journey too.

2 2. You Have To Know Exactly Where You’re Fast Travelling To

In a lot of similar games, you’ll be able to choose precisely where you’re warping to. You’ll see a convenient map of the game world, with all possible locations highlighted. Well, friends, nobody’s holding your hand out here in the Wild West.

Yes, you can pick where you want to fast travel to from a list of locations you’ve previously visited. What you can’t do is see where these locations are on the map, which means you need a good idea of where these places are in relation to each other. This is a wide, wide world with a lot of space in between landmarks, after all.

1 1. Stagecoaches And Trains: Not As Fast, But Still… Fast

In short, fast travel is super convenient in Red Dead Redemption 2 , but it could’ve been far more user-friendly. It’s expensive to unlock, it’s unwieldy, and you may not even have known it was there in the first place.

Still, it’s better than not having it, that’s for sure, and it’ll still save you a lot of frustration. Nevertheless, you’ll be glad to know that there’s another method of traversing the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 quicker than a horse: trains and stagecoaches.

All you do is head to a nearby ticket station, pay the fare for your chosen destination and off you go. It’s limited, sure, but a much cheaper alternative (upgrades-wise).

Just set up a campfire and press A to enter the menu. Not sure why this was so hard to find out about but it's HUGE!!! From what I saw the only thing people said is you have to unlock it at camp and it's a one way trip but that's clearly not true. Is this something they changed later on or is it exclusive to the PC version? So happy to find that out at "only" 40% into the story and thought it might help some people.

As someone who sometimes just stands and stares at the scenery from Rockstar Games ’ iconic title, this sounds like a must-have download.

There are plenty of other options mentioned alongside these two specific options that’ll change up your RDR2 playthrough for the better.

For those of you who prefer playing games vanilla, however, the secrets of this Wild West saga are still waiting for you – like the mythical creature fans are discovering after six years of playing the game on and off.

Best Ways To Make Money In Red Dead Redemption

Standard horse, appears in certain story events.

This is more of a special mention, given that 'Standard Horse' isn't exactly a breed per se. Rather, it's the placeholder name given to a certain horse that appears in story events and can't be ridden by the player.

This is probably for the best, since this horse boasts some of the worst stats in the game, which would make it a downright nightmare to ride during actual gameplay. Thankfully, most players don't have to deal with this nightmare unless they go out of their way to use console commands or cheats to spawn this horse just to see what the fuss is all about.

Scrawny Nag

The default horse in red dead online.

It's only a given that a horse that takes no effort to acquire will be far from useful in the game, and the Scrawny Nag is a great example of the same. Players who check out the world of Red Dead Online for the first time will start out with this weak horse that they'll want to replace as soon as possible.

Given the sheer number of horses that can be tamed or bought in the game (which include exclusive breeds not present in the story mode), it's easy to see why most players would prioritize replacing this horse over everything else. Sure, players can carry this horse with them to the very end, but that's just making things unnecessarily hard for them.

Buy From The Valentine Stables In Chapter 2 For $15

Generally speaking, riding horses are good for riding and not much else. For the Morgan, this is especially true, as it has some of the worst stats in the game. It’s a well-behaved horse and an easy one to ride , but there are far better horses.

The only advantage is that they’re common, making them easy to obtain in a pinch or good for making money. All variations share the same stats, but the Palomino is worth the least, making it objectively the worst horse in the game.

Morgans often appear in the wild and many NPCs own them. To legitimately obtain one, players can buy a Palomino from the Valentine Stables in Chapter 2 for $15. The Bay Roan, Bay, and Flaxen Chestnut must be captured or stolen.

Kentucky Saddler

Buy from the valentine stables for $50.

This horse beats walking and Morgans, but that's about it. All types have the same stats and worth, but the Grey is the only one that can be bought for $25, though with how common they are, players might as well find their own and save the money.

The Grey Coat Kentucky Saddler can be bought at the Valentine Stables for $50, tamed, or stolen. The Chestnut Pinto, Black, and Silver Bay must be stolen or tamed.

Tennessee Walker

Buy from the tumbleweed stable for $150.

In case the name didn’t tip fans off, the Tennessee Walker is a horse meant to be walked, possibly ridden. It’s the very first horse fans get in the game and with any luck won't be in the stable for long. If players insist on getting one go for the Flaxen Roan which has the best stats and sells for more.

The Flaxen Roan coat must be bought for $150 at the Tumbleweed Stable . The Mahogany Bay can only be obtained during the Outlaws From The West quest. The Black Rabicano, Chestnut, Dapple Bay, Red Roan, and Gold Palomino must be stolen or tamed.

Belgian Draft Horse

Can only be stolen.

Belgian Draft Horses are better than a riding horse but are considered the weakest of all draft horses. In addition to riding, they’re good at pulling things like carriages. If players decide to get this one as an upgrade from riding horses go for the Blond Chestnut or the Mealy Chestnut they have the same stats.

The Belgian Draft Horse only comes in the Chestnut coat and the only way to obtain it is to steal it.

Obtained During The "Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego" Quest In Chapter 2

No, these aren’t meant for hobbits, these are in fact the largest horses in the game and among the strongest players can find. They’ll pull anything players hook them to but don’t expect them to turn on a dime as they’re tough to handle. The best Shire horse is the Raven Black with just a little better stamina than its peers.

The Raven Black coat can be obtained during the Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego quest in Chapter 2. The Dark Bay and Light Grey types must be stolen.

Suffolk Punch

Yet another puller is the Suffolk Punch , but this one has some better stats than previous horses on this list. A downside however is that it can only be found meaning fans will have to find one or steal it. Either variation is fine as they have the same stats.

There is only the Red Chestnut coat, and it must be stolen.

Buy From The Tumbleweed Stable For $450

One of the last horses fans are likely to ride in the late part of the early game, the Appaloosa has decent stats with a fair amount of stamina. It’s an endurance horse meant for riding long trips and can survive an ambush. Leopard or Brown Leopard are the best variations with equal stats.

The Brown Leopard coat can be bought for $450 from the Tumbleweed Stable. The Leopard can be bought from the Van Horn Trading Post for $430. Scarred Blankets are rare and only appear during random encounters with Murfree Brood members. The Blanket, Leopard Blanket, and Few Spotted must be tamed.

American Standardbred

Buy from the valentine stable for $150.

The weakest of the race horses but with some use is the American Standardbred . They have decent speed but are very skittish. The Silver Tail Buckskin has the best stamina for longer runs, but the Palomino is easier to handle so pick according to the track.

The Palomino Dapple can be bought at the Valentine Stable for $150. The Silver Tail Buckskin is $400 at the Tumbleweed Stable. The Black and Buckskin must be tamed .

A Pre-Order Bonus Available For Free From The Valentine Stable

Pre-order bonuses always elicit a mixed reaction from players, so it's easy to see why some players would be miffed to find out that a pretty great horse in the main game can't be acquired unless they had pre-ordered the game before launch. Still, this shouldn't take away anything from the usefulness of the War Horse and its effective nature as one of the faster steeds in the game.

The biggest thing that makes the War Horse such a powerful ride in Red Dead Redemption 2 is its amazing speed, letting players zoom across the game world without breaking a sweat. This fact alone makes it a great horse that players can carry all the way to the end of the game if they wish.

Thoroughbred

Buy from the strawberry stable for $450.

Thoroughbreds are excellent sprinters with high acceleration, but not enough stamina or health to do anything else. They’ll die fast in combat and get winded if they run too long. The Brindle is the fastest and Dappled Black has the same stats but is only available in special editions of the game. Seal Brown is a bit slower but can run a little longer and take more hits.

The Dappled Black and Black Chestnut are only available in the Special or Ultimate Edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 . The Seal Brown only appears in Story Mode. The Brindle can be bought at the Strawberry Stable for $450. The Blood Bay and Dapple Grey must be tamed.

Hungarian Half-Bred

The weakest of the warhorses but by no means a pushover, Hungarian Half-Breds don’t spook easily and have decent stats. The Dapple Dark Grey is the best variation fans can find. It’s good in early skirmishes but players will want something better later on .

The Dapple Dark Grey coat can be bought at Valentine Stable for $150. The Flaxen Chestnut and Piebald Tobiano must be tamed.

American Paint

Buy from the tumbleweed stable for $425.

The American Paint is a classic horse, and is very smart and low maintenance, but this advantage is canceled out somewhat by mediocre stats making it a middle-of-the-run horse. It’ll get fans through the mid-game, but there are much better horses to strive for. Grey Overo has the best stats.

The Grey Overo can be bought at the Tumbleweed Stable for $425. The Overo, Splashed White, and Tobiano must be tamed.

Buy From The Saint Denis Stable For $450

One of the fastest horses in the game with breathtaking base speed. It can go hoof to hoof with the number two horse on this list, but every other stat fails to compare which is why it ranks around the middle. In a straight line race, the Nokota will hold their own, but any turns or obstacles, and they’ll lose . Get the Reverse Dapple Roan.

The Reverse Dapple Roan can be purchased at Saint Denis stable for $450. The Blue Roan and White Roan must be tamed. The Scarred Blue Roan is rare and can only be tamed during random encounters with the Murfree Brood.

Can Be Found In The Wild And Tamed

Mustangs are great combat horses but suffer because they’re among the orneriest in the game and are tough to fully bond with. The best variation is the Tiger Striped Bay as it has superior stats, but it’s also a rare find, so players will be wandering the wilderness for a while to find it.

Secret Side Quests Everyone Missed In Red Dead Redemption 2

The Grullo Dun, Tiger Striped Bay, and Wild Bay coats can only be found in the wild and must be tamed.

Buy From The Strawberry Stable For $140

These are tough horses that won't jump at anything. They can take a punch and have great endurance which makes them perfect horses for extended hunting trips. For the best Andalusians look for the Rose Grey variation.

The Dark Bay coat can be bought at Strawberry Stable for $140. The Rose Grey can be bought at Van Horn Trading Post for $440. The Perlino is only in the wild and must be tamed.

Dutch Warmblood

Buy from the strawberry stable for $150.

Starting the top five is an all-around great workhorse. Dutch Warmbloods can fulfill just about any role players need them to, other than racing which is why they don’t rank higher.
