My trip to Jeddah’s old quarter, Al Balad , was quite the experience!

My friends and I were keen to check it out, but finding a guide took much work.

So, we just jumped in a taxi and decided to wing it.

Our first day there was a bummer.

We ended up in shabby parts and did not need to figure out where the good stuff was.

However, hey, we are not the type to give up easily.

We returned the next day with some advice from locals and, wow, what a difference!

We stumbled upon these beautiful old streets and buildings that had been done up.

It was a shame the museums were shut, but just walking around and soaking in the atmosphere was awesome.

There is something cool about Al Balad.

It is like stepping back in time – the place has been around since the 7th century!

Finding a parking spot was a mission, but everything was just a stroll away once we did.

Sure, the area has much construction, with scaffolding everywhere, but you can tell it will be amazing when it is all done.

Al Balad might not be your typical picture-perfect spot, but it has its own charm.

Our guide was not much help, but we still loved the vibe of this old town.

It is a place to visit, especially if you are heading to the incredible Al Ula!

Red Sea Mall

It is a premier shopping destination that blends luxury retail with entertainment options, making it a must-visit for shopping enthusiasts.

I had a blast at the Red Sea Mall in Jeddah!

It is a shopping heaven with all the big brands, and the food is amazing.

The place is huge, but it is super clean and never feels too crowded.

Staying open till 1 am is a big plus – I love that I can shop late into the night.

It is also near the seafront, so getting there is a breeze.

They have a massive food court with all kinds of food, a cinema, and a play area for kids.

This mall has everything, whether hanging out with family, meeting friends, or just chilling by yourself.

Just a heads up – it is easy to get turned around because it is so big, so remember where you came in.

King Fahd’s Fountain

Witness the world’s tallest fountain, King Fahd’s Fountain, an iconic landmark of Jeddah that spectacularly jets water up to 260 meters high.

You have got to check out the fountain in Jeddah at night!

The fountain lights up only in the evening, which is worth watching.

The place is super clean and great for a chilled-out walk.

Sure, it gets crowded, but the sunset views are amazing.

It is a hit with families, too, with playgrounds and restaurants nearby.

It is especially nice in the winter months when it is not so humid.

Jeddah Corniche

Stroll along the Jeddah Corniche, a picturesque waterfront promenade offering stunning Red Sea views, recreational areas, and art installations.

I loved my evening walks in Jeddah Corniche. 

The waterfront is just perfect for a chilled-out stroll. 

It is clean and always buzzing with families and locals enjoying the cool sea breeze. 

My favorite part was grabbing a coffee or a quick bite while watching the stunning sunset.

The place comes to life in the evenings. 

Whether you are into jogging, biking, or just sitting back and relaxing, it has something for everyone. 

There are many coffee shops and restaurants, so it is a great spot to hang out, especially if you have kids.

The walkways along the coast are just lovely. 

They are well-maintained and offer some beautiful views of the sea. 

It is especially nice when it is not too hot in the late afternoon or evening. 

In winter, it is even more peaceful and pretty.

The place is super clean and well-designed.

Even though there was some construction around, it stayed within the experience.

Moreover, there are some nice restaurants nearby, which is a plus.

Seeing the mosque lit up at night is something else.

It looks like it is floating on water – such a cool sight!

It is worth checking out, even if you are passing by.

Praying in the open area of the mosque was an experience I will not forget.

There is something special about it, with the sea breeze and the sound of the waves.

Al Tayebat International City

I just had to share about this awesome museum I visited in Jeddah. 

This hidden treasure is filled with cool Islamic artifacts and bits of Saudi history. 

The place is huge, spread over four floors, and each one is packed with interesting stuff. 

You have got rooms set up like in old times, some neat modern art, and these epic historical scenes.

The building is something to see – it has this amazing architecture. 

Moreover, it is not just a quick walk-through kind of place. 

You will want to spend a good chunk of time here, more than a day, to take it all in. 

I also saw many school kids learning about their culture, which was cool.

They have everything from old books and pottery to a guide who knows everything there. 

It is also known as the  Abdul Raouf Khalil Museum , and they have done a great job showing what life used to be like in Saudi Arabia.

The place is clean and well-maintained; they even have some tasty food. 

It is perfect if you are into history or want to see something different. 

Seriously, if you are in Jeddah, you have got to check it out. 

It is like a trip back in time and a neat way to learn about the culture and history of the region.

Mall of Arabia

The Mall of Arabia offers a comprehensive shopping experience with its vast international brands, dining options, and entertainment facilities.

I had a great time at the Mall of Arabia in Jeddah.

It is huge and perfect for a day of shopping.

They have a fantastic selection of perfumes and many snack options – I loved the tea and Belgian waffles.

The mall is easy to find and great for a long stroll.

There is a big food court with many different food choices, plus familiar coffee places like Starbucks.

It is well laid out, so finding your way around is easy.

What I like about this mall is how well everything is organized.

The food options are awesome, both in the food court and the other restaurants.

Plus, it is bright and welcoming; you do not get that smell of food everywhere.

It is close to Jeddah Airport’s South Terminal, so it is convenient for some last-minute shopping.

They have got a mix of high-end and more affordable brands.

It is also great for families – they have places like KidZania for the kids.

Biet Nassif

Discover Jeddah’s cultural history at Biet Nassif, an iconic 19th-century Al-Balad mansion now serving as a cultural center and museum.

I checked out Nasseef House in the old part of Jeddah, Al-Balad, which was fascinating.

The house has been beautifully restored and is packed with cool art and exhibits.

The area around Nasseef House is steeped in history and super interesting, but the opening hours can be a bit hit or miss.

I had a great blast at the Fakieh Aquarium in Jeddah!

They have an amazing collection of sea animals – sharks, tropical fish, big fishes, small fishes, and even eels.

The dolphin show is the show’s real star; super entertaining and educational, too.

You will laugh out loud.

Moreover, when it is time for a break, there is a decent restaurant and a spot to relax outdoors.

It is ideal for school trips, college trips, and family outings.

Kids go nuts for it, and you will have a good time, too!

Al Salam Mall

It is a family-friendly shopping and entertainment destination featuring a variety of retail stores, eateries, and leisure activities.

I went to this mall in Jeddah and loved it!

It is huge, super clean, and bright – totally a favorite spot of mine now.

They have loads of shops, restaurants, and a cool food court.

It is perfect for a day out with family or friends.

What is awesome is that it is not just about shopping; there is plenty of entertainment, too.

The prices are decent, and they have got this place called Danube that’s a big hit.

I also found a hypermarket inside, which is super convenient.

There, you will find various brands, including luxury, everyday stuff, and famous restaurants.

It is a one-stop shop for everything you need.

Moreover, if you are hunting for something specific and cannot find it anywhere else in Jeddah, chances are you will find it here.

The mall is big enough for a good long walk, has lots of parking, and is a great place to grab a bite.

I recommend checking it out if you are in the area!

I saw the world’s tallest flagpole in Jeddah, and it is seriously cool!

Standing at 171 meters, it is a real symbol of pride for the city.

Driving by is quite a sight, especially at night when it is all lit up.

It is near many restaurants and always seems to be in the middle of all the action.

On Saudi National Day, the place is buzzing with people.

It is one of those landmarks in Jeddah you cannot miss – it makes you appreciate the city’s grandeur.

Silver Sands Beach

Its serene, private beach offers pristine sands, crystal-clear waters, and a perfect escape from the city’s hustle.

I visited this beach near Jeddah, and it is a hidden gem!

It is out of the way and tricky to find, but once you are there, it is like being in the Caribbean.

Gorgeous white sand, clear water, palm trees – just beautiful.

It is a great place for a chill day, especially for ladies who want to relax freely.

It is pricey, and you need to book in advance.

It is a private beach, so not everyone can walk in.

They have some water activities, and the vibe is super relaxed and family-friendly.

They might ask for your passport at the gate, which can be off-putting.

However, honestly, the beach is so worth it.

If you are in Jeddah and looking for a beach day, this is the place to go.

Just kick back, soak up the sun, and enjoy the beautiful setting.

Bicycle Square

Bicycle Square, known for its enormous bicycle sculpture, is a popular landmark symbol of Jeddah’s commitment to art and culture.

We visited the Bicycle Roundabout in Jeddah , a unique historical monument.

It is this huge bicycle sculpture at a roundabout, a symbol of Jeddah’s past.

Locals love it – they even saved it from being removed.

It is old and could use fresh paint, but it is still a cool landmark.

It is near the souqs, easy to spot, and great for a quick selfie.

The area has been spruced up recently, but new construction might hide it.

Since it is super busy, you must continue for photos, but it is worth checking out if you are driving by.

The best time to see it is early morning on weekends.

It is not a typical tourist spot, but it adds to Jeddah’s charm.

Makkah Gate

The historic Makkah Gate, an ancient city entrance, is a testament to Jeddah’s historical significance as the gateway to Mecca.

We checked out the  Makkah Gat e, or  Quran Gate , on the  Jeddah–Makkah Highway . 

This impressive arch marks the entrance to Makkah, about 27 km from the Grand Mosque. 

Built in 1979, it is a symbol for the city and a boundary marker – non-Muslims cannot go past it. 

The gate’s massive, covering eight lanes of traffic, and it has these cool patterns that light up at night. 

The Makkah Gate is more modern and a real landmark on the way to the holy city. 

It is amazing to see, especially when it is all lit up in the evenings. 

So, if you are driving towards  Makkah from Jeddah , it is worth a stop for a quick photo. 

Even if it is not a typical tourist spot, it is a key piece of the area’s history and interesting to check out.

Jeddah Water Front Park

Enjoy leisurely walks, beach activities, and beautiful sunset views at Jeddah Waterfront Park, a rejuvenated public space along the Red Sea.

Strolling along the Jeddah Waterfront, you are greeted by the serene expanse of the Red Sea.

This sprawling, well-maintained public space, free of charge, offers a refreshing escape.

Families flock here, children laughing as they play on the swings and slides.

The aroma of coffee and snacks wafts through the air from quaint mini-bars.

For the active, it is a haven with jogging paths, cycling tracks, and a welcoming area for swimmers, complete with vigilant lifeguards.

Restaurants and cafes are plentiful, serving a variety of treats.

Although popular and sometimes bustling, especially on weekends and holidays, the waterfront retains a sense of peace and order.

It is a slice of tranquility in Jeddah, perfect for unwinding, socializing, and soaking in the beauty of the Red Sea.

Khadija Baghlaf Mosque

Admire the architectural beauty of Khadija Baghlaf Mosque, a contemporary place of worship known for its elegant design and serene ambiance.

The Khadija Baghlaf Mosque in Jeddah is a real gem.

It is huge and always spotless.

It is tucked away in a neighborhood, but once you find it, you will see how busy it gets, especially during Friday prayers or Ramadan.

What is cool about it is that it is not just a place to pray; they have all these lectures and classes going on, which is great for anyone looking to learn more.

Parking can be a headache because it is such a popular spot.

However, it is so peaceful and pretty inside that it is worth the hassle.

Aziz Mall offers a delightful shopping experience with its wide range of retail outlets, dining choices, and entertainment options for the whole family.

The Mall in Jeddah is a hit! 

It is located on Arbayeen Street, which is perfect because it is in the heart of Jeddah. 

The prices in the shops are reasonable, and it has this  Hyper Panda supermarket  where you can get all your groceries.

With its Red Sea coastline, cosmopolitan history, spectacular old town and fantastic food, Jeddah is a city that perfectly encapsulates the tapestry of life in Saudi Arabia . Whether you’re in town for a short getaway or a longer visit, here are 10 of the best things to do in Jeddah.

1. Go back in time in Al Balad

Jeddah’s old town of Al Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is beguiling, and one of the city’s main visitor draws. With many buildings up to 400 years old, the neighbourhood is undergoing a major restoration project to conserve the traditional architecture, including the distinctive ornate wooden roshan balconies. Visit during the daytime for the best photography opportunities, or in the evening when the area is at its most lively, the narrow streets filled with families out for a stroll, friends drinking coffee and shoppers heading to the souqs.

2. Savour some of Jeddah’s oldest restaurants

As one of the most multifaceted cities in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah is a wonderful foodie  destination, with so many culinary influences finding their way into the city’s cuisine. It’s also a great place to try some traditional restaurants, many of which are located around Al Balad. For seafood, head to Al Bassali, where they’ve been frying fish and prawns since 1949. The menu has expanded in the decades since, and you’ll now find grills and tajins too, but you can’t go wrong with the fried prawns, heated with the same secret mix of spices they’ve been using since day one, and even more delicious when dipped in tahini. Go after 4pm and you’ll also find people queuing up for hot-from-the-frier samosas and doughnuts. And try to save space for some masoub , a typically Jeddawi dessert made from bread, banana, honey and nuts that has Yemeni roots. Carnivores will love Naji Al-Harbi’s kebabs, a place that's been feeding hungry Al Balad residents since 1950, and for something more adventurous, Ba’issa is the place to try sheep’s head.

3. Discover Jeddah’s art-covered roundabouts

A vintage Mini Cooper on top of a flying carpet. A giant mosaic-covered octopus rising from roiling surf. A concrete block with cars poking out. Modigliani-esque metal sculptures of camels. These are just some of the roadside oddities to keep a lookout for as you drive around Jeddah. The city’s roundabouts are known for their artistic quirks, many dating back to the 1970s and 80s when there was a major push to incorporate public art into the urban landscape. Do a city-wide safari while hunting for them.

4. Stroll or cycle along the seafront Corniche

Jeddah’s seaside Corniche is a popular place for a stroll in the evening, with locals gathering for seafront walks towards the King Fahd fountain that shoots water more than 300 metres into the air. Or pick up a rental bicycle in the section of the North Corniche between the Shangri-La and Sheraton Hotels and ride down the street’s pedestrianised centre.

5. Shopping, from souks to malls to concept stores

Jeddah provides ample opportunities to pick up fabrics and leather sandals, and the souks around Al Balad have a vast array of both, alongside spices, sweets and fragrances. If you’re in the market for an abaya or kaftan, Serafi Mega Mall is jammed with shops selling seasonal and traditional styles at very affordable prices, ranging from the conservative to the colourful. To see where the city’s style crowd shops, head to one of Jeddah’s concept stores, such as Homegrown Market in the Ar-Rawdah district, where you’ll find more than 150 brands offering fashion, accessories and homeware. Also in Ar-Rawdah, multi-brand streetwear store Crowdless is the place for athleisure and sneaker finds. It’s also right next to the hugely popular Adani Bar, a contemporary cafe serving Yemeni spiced tea. Sit down for a cup, and order a tuna, tomato and caper toastie or a melted cheese sandwich filled with blueberry jam.

6. Head to the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina for an al fresco dinner

Near Jeddah’s floating mosque and the Formula 1 track, Jeddah Yacht Club is home to a growing community of yachties, as well as several outdoor restaurants that make for lovely al fresco dining spots in good weather. Le Comptoir de Nicole’s flavours are straight out of Nice, with dishes such as: Provençal pissaladière with stewed onions, olives and anchovies; buttery sole meunière ; and, a truffle mafaldine pasta that’s so good you won’t want to share. Over at Mashi no Mashi, the Japanese menu features Wagyu gyoza and sliders alongside substantial slurpable ramen bowls. And at Madeo, Italian favourites such as lobster spaghetti and porcini pizza are accompanied by excellent craft mocktails.

7. Snorkelling and diving in the Red Sea waters

With its Red Sea location and year-round warm waters, Jeddah provides an enviable opportunity to explore the underwater world that lies offshore. There are a number of Jeddah-based operators who can arrange dive trips, and many hotels can also organise snorkelling excursions. Turtles, sharks, and a huge variety of fish inhabit the waters here, as well as hard and soft corals and, for expert divers, shipwrecks.

8. Head to Hayy Jameel for art, cinema and community theatre 

A sister to Dubai ’s Jameel Arts Centre, Hayy Jameel opened in Jeddah in 2021 and offers dynamic arts and culture-based programming throughout the year. With a strong community vibe and spaces that encourage socialising and the sharing of ideas, Hayy Jameel draws visitors with art exhibitions and education spaces, a cinema showcasing Saudi, Arab and international feature films, shorts and documentaries, as well as the first community theatre in Saudi Arabia. There’s also a cafe, concept store and a baking academy, alongside occasional pop-up farmers’ markets.

9. Treat yourself to a spa day at the Park Hyatt Jeddah

Sitting right next to the water on the Corniche, the Park Hyatt Jeddah is the place to head when you want a break from the city. The spa facilities here – separate for men and women – offer relaxing and restorative treatments, along with extensive wet facilities and powerful underwater jets in the aquamedic pools which pummel aching muscles and are great prep for a massage. But the real highlight here is the large outdoor pool exclusively reserved for women. Surrounded by shade-giving palm trees and a row of sunbeds, spend a couple of hours here and you’ll feel wonderfully recharged and ready to get back out into the city again.

Load up the family to enjoy a day of thrilling rides, video games, bowling, rock climbing and even ice skating. Atallah Happy Land Park also features a musical fountain, a 6-D theater and plenty of food choices.

Step into an African safari at Jungle Land Theme Park (Mersal Village) , one of Jeddah’s premier entertainment venues. With three floors and hundreds of stores to choose from, it’s easy to spend a whole day shopping at Mall of Arabia . The mall features a modern white interior, fun art installations, and colorful LED lighting. Visitors will pay about $40 USD for entrance which includes access to the beach, use of the washrooms and change rooms, and access to various beach chairs for lounging in the sun. There is also a small cafe serving drinks and light meals. While this private Jeddah beach can get crowded on the weekends, it’s a great spot to soak up the sun, swim, snorkel, and dive in the impossibly blue waters.

4. Marvel at the incredible sight of KING FAHD’S FOUNTAIN

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Jeddah is King Fahd’s Fountain , the tallest fountain of its kind in the world. The fountain blasts a stream of water from the Red Sea into the air to a maximum height of over 800 feet. While the water jet can be seen during the day from many places throughout the city, it is best appreciated at night when it is illuminated by hundreds of spotlights. 5. Swim with the dolphins at FAKIEH AQUARIUM

Tourists of all ages will enjoy a trip to Fakieh Aquarium , Saudi Arabia’s only public aquarium. This aquatic zoo in Jeddah houses over 200 marine species including sharks, stingrays, sea lions, and seahorses. At over 500 feet tall, Jeddah Flagpole holds the Guinness World Records title as the tallest unsupported flagpole in the world. It sits in King Abdullah (Bin Abdulaziz) Square at the Saudi Flag Roundabout and flies the official flag of Saudi Arabia. 10. Take a quick trip to BICYCLE SQUARE

When considering what to do in Jeddah for fun, be sure to plan a quick stop to Bicycle Square near King Fahd Road . Bicycle Square (also known as Midan Addarajah) is a roundabout featuring a 50-foot metal sculpture of a bicycle. The sculpture was first installed in 1982 and remains one of the city’s most famous and eye-catching art installations. Few places have such an oriental flair as the Arabic Peninsula. But how about a visit there? For many, Jeddah is a relatively unknown city to visit, and no wonder why. After all, the country only recently opened up for tourism in a larger scale. Is Jeddah worth visiting, you might ask? Or maybe you are wondering what to do in Jeddah? We have been there, and here we give you 7 great places to visit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia .

The city of Jeddah is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, with a population of around 4,7 million people. Jeddah is located on the Arabian peninsula on the shores of the Read Sea. It is a vast city, and it is the commercial centre of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia only recently opened for tourism, as late as in the autumn of 2019. The country strives to get the number of International tourists up, and a part of this is that the visa process has been made easier for many countries.

We spent 10 days in Saudi Arabia, visiting three very different places. We started our trip in with exploring the best places to visit in Jeddah before we headed north to the desert area of Al Ula. We ended our trip in Medina (Madinah), the second-holiest city in Islam.

What we learned on this trip, is that Saudi Arabia has so much to offer its visitors, from big cities, history, culture, breathtaking nature and loads of friendly people. Furthermore, we also learned that it is surprisingly easy to travel in Saudi Arabia, between the different places to visit.

As Saudi Arabia is still a young tourist country, the infrastructure might not be the same as in other more developed destinations, but after all, Saudi Arabia is a very modern country, and even travelling by public transport as we did is possible. Read on for 7 great places to visit in Jeddah. Furthermore, this post will also give you some practical tips on how to visit Jeddah and how to get around.

Is Jeddah safe to visit?

Let’s start with one of the basic questions, and one that we also asked ourselves before we made this trip. How safe is it to visit Saudi Arabia and is it safe to visit Jeddah?

To answer both questions in one; yes, Saudi Arabia is safe to visit, and it’s also safe to visit Jeddah. We never faced any challenges or unsafe situations of any kind. On the contrary, wherever we went, we were met with smiles, happy faces, and people asking where we are from and welcoming us to their country.

Walking in the streets felt safe at all times, although we do recommend using common sense as always when travelling, such as avoiding deserted back streets after dark. Also, public transport with buses and trains between the different places to visit in Saudi Arabia felt very safe. Of course, be aware of pickpockets at all times, especially in more crowded places.

A huge city like Jeddah also felt surprisingly safe. We walked over big distances of the city, in the narrow lanes of the old town, and never faced any problems.

For travellers, the biggest danger, if any, must be the always busy traffic. Saudi Arabia is a car country, and Jeddah is no exception. There are cars everywhere, and sometimes they come really fast, even in the city centre. That said, the roads are in excellent condition, and everywhere people are following the traffic rules. The traffic in Saudi Arabia is nothing like the one you might have experienced in countries such as India or maybe Egypt .

On a side note; as a tourist, you are required to follow customs and rules in the country you are visiting, and that goes for Saudi Arabia as well. Already when filling out the visa application, you will have to agree to follow customs, dress modestly and refrain from visiting places only open to Muslims, like the city of Mecca or the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. Be aware that breaking these rules can in the worst case get you deported from the country.

How to get a visa to Saudi Arabia

Do I need a visa to visit Saudi Arabia you might wonder? Yes, you do. All visitors to Saudi Arabia, including pilgrims, need a visa to enter the country. As a part of the plan to attract more tourists to the country, Saudi Arabia has introduced eVisa to 49 countries, making the visa application process very easy and smooth.

This eVisa is a one-year multi-entry visa allowing you to spend up to 90 days in the country. Check out the website for Visit Saudi to check if your country is eligible for the eVisa application. All countries are listed there. Should you not be eligible to apply online for this visa, please contact your nearest Saudi Arabia Embassy .

The cost of the Saudi Arabia eVisa is SAR 535 (approx €130/ $140) including mandatory health insurance. The application process is very easy and straightforward. Simply fill in the application form online, pay the visa fee and you’ll have your visa by email within minutes.

Places to visit in Jeddah

So, what to do in Jeddah you might ask? While Jeddah isn’t a city full of world-class sights, there are enough Jeddah places to visit for a couple of days. If everything was located close by you really wouldn’t need that much time, but since the attractions in Jeddah are spread all over the city, you should count some extra time commuting between the different places in this list.

For these places to visit in Jeddah we spent two days. We did a combination of walking, sometimes long distances, and taxi. Of all the places on this list, we recommend you to allow the most time in Al Balad, the beautiful old town of Jeddah.

1. Al Balad – Jeddah Old Town

If you only have time to visit one place in the city of Jeddah, make sure it is Al Balad. This is truly a highlight and in our opinion, one of the best places to visit in Jeddah.

Al Balad is the historic area of Jeddah, and Balad literally translates to The Town . It was founded in the 7th century and historically served as the centre of Jeddah. It was the beating heart of Jeddah and a centre for trade in the region. Also, Al Balad and Jeddah were, and are today, the gateway to Mecca.

Today, much of its old glory is gone, and the once impressive town has seen its better days. In the narrow, dusty streets you will find numerous colourful but crumbling houses with still amazing woodwork, especially seen on the many traditional balconies and latticed windows of the houses.

The main reason to visit Al Balad is the architecture. This part of Jeddah isn’t very big, but one can easily spend hours on end exploring the small streets, narrow lanes and squares. Many of the buildings here are up to 500 years old, and one wishes the walls could tell some of the stories they have witnessed over the past centuries. For years a preservation program has been in place, and today you will find a great mix of restored and crumbling buildings side by side.

The best way to explore AL Balad is by foot, and the best time to visit Jeddah’s old town is either in the early mornings or in the afternoon: During the middle of the day the area is very quiet and most places are closed. If you visit in the late afternoon, you will find the area at its best. The souq, the shops and the cafes are open, and the streets are full of life. Do visit one of the cute cafes or coffee shops located in the historic houses when you are in need of a break.

Al Balad was given UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014.

2. Island Mosque

Many of the best places to visit in Jeddah include one of the many mosques in the city. The mosques in Jeddah might not be the most impressive ones, like in Iran, Istanbul or Abu Dhabi, but they still have some pretty nice ones also in the city of Jeddah.

The Island Mosque is not the largest of mosques, nor the most impressive one. Still, for us, it quickly became one of the best places to visit in Jeddah. It is something with the location and the simplicity of the building that is just very appealing.

The mosque was designed by the Egyptian architect Abdel Wahed El-Wakil and was conceived as a sculptural element accentuating the Jeddah landscape.

3. Jeddah sign

Ok, so this might not be the most impressive of all the places to visit in Jeddah, but it’s still one of the most popular Jeddah tourist places for a shortstop. It is simply a large sign, or large letters, saying Jeddah, and it can be a fun place for a short stop to make a few nice photos.

The Jeddah sign is located along the Jeddah corniche. You can reach it by taxi, and we would say that the best time to visit is in the late afternoon. That way you might be able to catch the sunset over the Red Sea at the same time.

Combine the Jeddah sign with the Island Mosque. It’s less than 10 minutes by foot between these two sights, and in fact, this is one of the few Jeddah tourist places you can walk between due to the short distance.

4. Jeddah Corniche

The Jeddah Corniche is simply the promenade going along the shore of the Red Sea, also known as the Jeddah Waterfront. In total the corniche is 30km (18.6 mi) long, so don’t plan to walk the whole of it. Along the corniche you will find several Jeddah places to visit and, in fact, many of the places on this list can also be found along the corniche.

TIP: Want to see more of the Read Sea? Egypt is not far away, and could easily be combined with Saudi Arabia. Dahab is a popular place to visit on the Sinai Peninsula, and some of the best things to do in Dahab are diving and snorkelling.

It is a popular place for families, friends or couples to come and hang out, have some food and drinks, do sports or arrange a picnic. Especially at the time around sunset, the Jeddah promenade is popular, and this is when you will find it most lively.

All along the Jeddah Corniche you can find small stalls or kiosks selling food and drinks. There are even a few places offering speciality coffee – if you are like us – addicted to good coffee.

Fun fact: Parts of the Jeddah Corniche are now also part of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, a Formula One motor racing circuit built for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

5. Floating mosque

The Al-Rahmah mosque is a must-see mosque not to be missed. It is located north of the city centre, along the northern end of the Jeddah Corniche. This mosque is relatively new, constructed in 1985 on a water surface, hence the nickname – the Floating Mosque. This is one of the nicest places to visit in Jeddah, and also, it’s one of the most visited mosques in the city of Jeddah.

It got its nickname, the Floating mosque because at high tide the mosque appears to hover over the waves of the Red Sea below. The architecture of this mosque is a combination of ancient and modern Islamic architecture.

You can visit the grounds and the open courtyard of the mosque at all times of the day, but it is especially beautiful to visit as the sun sets over the Read Sea.

TIP: This mosque is closed between prayer times. The caretaker opened the door for us at showed us around inside. Look around if it’s closed during your visit – maybe someone can open the door and let you in.

6. Jeddah Art Promenade

Not far from the Floating mosque is the Jeddah Art Promenade. This new area used to be a quiet residential area now turned into a modern part of the city with a marina, a beach-front avenue and the Jeddah Art Promenade.

Jeddah Art Promenade features carnivals, live performances as well as several art installations. The area also has lots of restaurants, cafes and a small retail selection.

You can perfectly combine a visit to the Floating mosque and the Jeddah Art Promenade as it is within walking distance in between. Both places are located quite far outside the city centre, so our recommendation is to visit both places at the same time so that you don’t have to go that far twice.

7. Hassan Enany Mosque

The Hassan Enany Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in Jeddah, and it’s one of the best places in Jeddah to visit. It was built in 1984 and this relatively small mosque is a great example of the grandeur of Islamic architecture and interior design.

With its whitewashed walls, golden domes and twin minarets, it is truly a beautiful mosque. Of course, the location directly on the Red Sea waterfront helps with the impression as well.

It is located along the Jeddah Corniche, and although more centrally located, it’s still quite far from some of the other Jeddah tourist places on this list, so a visit here is not that easy to combine with the other attractions in Jeddah, but it’s a convenient place to start if you want to explore the Middle Corniche Park.

Best time to visit Jeddah

When is the best time to visit Jeddah? The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is between November and March. In this period the climate is mild and the temperature is comfortable. Avoid visiting during the summer. The temperatures on the Arabian Peninsula are too high in this period and you won’t be able to do much else than seek shelter from the heat indoors.

• Visiting Jeddah in the winter: November-March mean temperature is 24-28 °C (78-82F)
• Visiting Jeddah in the summer: Mean temperature 31-22 °C (87-92F)
• Visiting Jeddah in spring or autumn: Mean temperature is 26-31 °C (78-87F)
• Most rain: November, but it doesn’t really rain that much even then.

How to get to Jeddah

You can fly into Jeddah, both domestically and internationally. Jeddah airport is the third-largest and the busiest airport in Saudi Arabia, serving the highest number of International travellers to the country. The airport is the main hub for Saudia, the national carrier of Saudi Arabia. Saudia serves a large number of International destinations in Europe, Asia and America. Also, many other International airlines serve Jeddah airport.

You can also reach Jeddah by air from many domestic destinations. Apart from Saudia, check out low-cost airline Flynas for domestic flights.

If you are already in Saudi Arabia and want to visit Jeddah, you can reach the city by a large bus network, or from a few destinations, also by train. Saudi Arabia is currently building out their railway network, but at the time of writing only a few lines are operated by one of the two railway companies in the country. For travelling by train check out either Saudi Arabia Railways or Haramain High-Speed Railway . For buses, check out Saptco . They have an extensive bus network to choose from.

Is it expensive to visit Jeddah or Saudi Arabia?

To be honest, Jeddah and Saudi Arabia aren’t the cheapest places to visit. While you can score a good flight deal, especially if you stop in Saudi Arabia en route somewhere else, the prices for food and accommodations can often easily compare to those of western Europe.

It seems like the tourism authorities are aiming more towards an up-market group of travellers, hence the availability of luxurious hotels and resorts. If you are a luxury traveller and want to visit Saudi Arabia, the sky is your limit. The same goes for Jeddah. You can find loads of expensive and exclusive hotels all over the city, and also the prices for accommodation in the budget range are much higher than in other places, eg South East Asia. Be prepared to pay €50/ $55 per night for budget accommodation.

Prices for food and drinks (Saudi Arabia is a dry country meaning no alcohol allowed) are also much higher than in many other destinations. There are lots of exclusive restaurants specialised in e.d seafood, but expect the bill to be high. If you are visiting Jeddah on a budget, then look for the many Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi restaurants around the city. The food is excellent and prices are low.

How to get around in Jeddah

The city of Jeddah is huge. Both in the number of inhabitants, but also in size. The city stretches mile after mile along the coast, and the distances from one place to another are often very long. Due to this, it’s a big question why the authorities didn’t develop a system for public transport. With no metro system, no trams and almost no buses, no wonder the car traffic is as busy as it is.

Short distances can easily be walked, such as around the old town or along the corniche. But for moving from one place in Jeddah to another you need a car or at least transport by car. The Jeddah tourist places are spread over the large city, so there’s no chance you can walk between them all.

There are lots of taxis, and in more busy areas it’s easy to get one. The best is to take one of the green taxis. They are said to be the most reliable and also the cheaper taxis. Always ask the driver to go by meter. Otherwise, you will have to pay much more than you should.

We tried Über in Jeddah, but in our experience, it didn’t work very well. Mostly no driver was available for Über, and the main reason for that is that most people use another app for transport, the Careem app.

Careem is the preferred transport app in Saudi Arabia and in many of the surrounding countries. It works the same way as Über, and you can pay with cash, credit card or via Apple Pay. Especially, if you visit more remote places in Jeddah with less traffic, the Careem app can be a lifesaver to get you back afterwards. Also, we quickly figured out that Careem is mostly cheaper than regular green taxis, so it’s really a win-win situation. You can download the app from App Store or Android.

If you arrive in Jeddah by air, train or bus, you will be met at the airport, train -or bus station by a large number of people offering official or unofficial taxi services. They tend to be much more pricey. Stick to the green taxis you will find on the outside, or order a car via Careem.

Is Jeddah worth visiting?

After reading this post, you might ask yourself is Jeddah worth visiting? To sum it up and conclude; yes it is. It might not be the city in Saudi Arabia where you want to spend most of your holiday, but we definitely would recommend visiting while you are in the region. Two nights should be an ok time, although three nights might be better if you have the time. If you have limited time in Jeddah we absolutely recommend you not miss the old town, AL Balad. In our opinion, this is one of the best places to visit in Jeddah.
